Motlce.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, c- r stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mado and addressed to MB. Whenever it is desired that any person Bhould be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor mast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names aud Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. ROBERT M'KAY MANSON, lately schoolmaster at Dairy, Kirkcudbrightshire, is charged with forgery and em- bezzlement : he is a native of Kildonan or Helmsdale, Suther- landshire, where it is said his mother resides, about 33 years of age, 5 feet inches high, brown hair, whiskers, and moustache, blue eyes, large head, and stout build; dressed when he left in a light grey tweed shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and a brown overcoat. He was Inspector of Poor of the parish of Dairy, which place he left on the 9th instant, and has not since been heard of; he was schoolmaster at Clarencefield, Dumfriesshire, before going to Dairy, and it is said that his wife belongs to Wiltshire. Information to be given to the Chief Constable at Kirkcudbright, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 31. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a lady on the 22nd instant, between Blackburn and Brooks' Bar, Chorlton- road, Man- chester, via Railway : a black velvet Purse, with steel clasps, small size, containing two £ 100 Band of England Notes, the name ' Wm. Eccles' written on each Note, in a lady's hand writing, also the month and day, either ' April or May,' together with thirteen Sovereigns. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the notes shall receive £ 20 reward, on application to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Black- burn— Bow- street, May 29. Description of a silver Watch stolen from the person on the night of the 20th instant, at Castleford, in the West Riding of the county of York, it is capped, engine- turned case, silver dial, maker Jackson, Goole, No. 77235 : By a man named TWEED, since apprehended. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Pontefract, or to Inspector Beevers, Castleford.— Bow- street, May 24. Further information respecting the Watches stolen on Salisbury Race Course on the 18th instant: A gold Watch and Chain, twisted, with a gold American Dollar at the end, No. 20051, initials ' M. J. M.' on back of case. £ 5 reward will be given for the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender or offenders. A silver Geneva, one hand missing, gold curb albert Chain, with cross bar at end. 50s. reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. A silver Watch, with gold Chain and Locket, maker Carter, Salisbury. £ 2 reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Also a small silver Geneva, and a gentleman's grey cloth top Coat. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Fisherton, Salisbury.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen from the person on Harpenden race- course on the 19tli instant: a silver Watch with gold albert Chain at- tached, the property of Mr. Dixon, of Hemel Hempstead. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Hatfield, or to Inspector Baurne, Hemel Hempsted, Herts.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen from the person of Mr. Thomas Lewis, of Wistan- stow, Shropshire, on the night of the 15th instant, whilst returning from Church Stretton fair in a state of drunken- ness : a £ 20 Bank of England Note, indorsed on the back ' Thomas Jones, Salop;' four Sovereigns, and a Half- sovereign, all in washleather Bag with two compartments and a reeving string round the top. £ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. Lewis upon the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 2 and 5 a. m. on the 27tli instant, the dwelling- house of George Nathaniel Wilkinson, of Norton, near Stockton- on- Tees, in the county of Durham, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : an old gilt. French hunting Watch, with a small pattern gold Guard attached ; an electro- plated Mustard Spoon, a briarroot Pipe, a Cigar Holder, 4d. in Copper, a pair of elastic- side Boots, half worn, buttons up sides ; and a number of Cigars. By three men, who were seen near the premises, and who absconded immediately after the robbery: CHARLES LUNGLEY, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, very small eyes, brown hair, no whiskers, slight moustache, slender make, thin face, and sharp nose ; a painter ; dressed in a dark brown coat, dark vest with puce spots, light coloured trousers, and black billycock hat; CHARLES SNELLING, 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pockpitted, dark hair cut short, no whiskers or moustache, and proportionate make ; a plasterer ; dressed in black coat and vest, fustian trousers, and black billycock hat ; and HENRY HUGGINS, 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pockpitted, dark hair, no whiskers or moustache, and proportionate make ; a bricklayer ; dressed in black coat, dark vest, cord trousers with raised seams down sides, an 1 light coloured billycock hat. They are all natives of Notting- hill, London, and are supposed to be well- known there to the police. Between 12 p. m. and 6 a. m. on the 28th instant, the cottage of Miss Lucy Page, of Emberton, was feloniously entered, by taking a pane of Glass from the kitchen window, and the following articles stolen therein : three old silver tea Spoons, much worn; a table cloth, marked ' J. P.;' an unbleached ditto ; about 2 lbs. of Beef ; 1 lb. of Bacon ; 1 lb. of Cheese ; a small work Box, containing letters ; and four Eggs. Information to be given to Inspector Hall, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow- street, May 29. Between 4 and 12 p. m. on the 20th instant the house of William Brooks, of Friskney, in the county of Lincoln, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a light twilled cloth Jacket or Coat ( near a drab), nearly new, with two outside pockets and one inside lefs breast, three seams down the back, light buttons; about lib of cooked Mutton ; and 3 lbs. of Bread. Information to be given to Superintendent Wright, Police Station, Spilsby, or to Police Constable ( 16) Linton, Friskney, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, May 24. During the night of the 18th instant, the dwelling- house, No. 24, Calverley- park, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Dessert Spoon and two silver Tea Spoons, crest— a mailed hand holding an arrow, supported by a crown, with motto, ' Quondam his vicinus armis ;" a small silver Sugar Spoon, in the form of a leaf ; and a round brass Clock, about 4 inches across. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. — Bow- street, May 22 HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen on the 25th instant, from a field at Walsall, a black cob Horse, aged, 13 hands high, white saddle marks on back, and in good condition. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 31. Description of ROBERT DODDS, of Swaffham, harness maker, who absconded on or about the 23rd instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a pair of driving Reins, and a Whip, recovered : about 33 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, large whiskers, hazel eyes, and a great impediment in his speech, is fond of drink, and will call on his trade for work. Information to be given to Superintendent Lambley, Swaffham, Norwolk.— Bow- street, May 31. Stolen during the night of the 29th instant, from a field near Stafford, a black waggon Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, white streak down face, lumps on off hock, and in good condition. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Con- stable Disney, Staffordshire Constabulary, Forebridge.— Bow- street, May 31. Stolen from Ashtead, Surrey, on the night of the 26th instant : a large grey gelding Ass, very old, in low condition, recently shod, and has marks on the fore- legs, as if at some time fired, the property of Mr. Brooks. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking, or at the Police Station, Leatherhead.— Bow- street, May 31. Further information respecting the Horse stolen from the parish of Old Dalby, Leicestershire, between 11 a. m. on the 14th and 4 p. m. on the 15th instant ( advertised in the Police Gazette of the 17th instant), it is a light chesnut Horse, 3 years old, 14 hands high, white face, a little white on the off fore foot, white hind foot, switch tail, and in fair condi- tion. £ 5 reward will be paid on conviction of the offender and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Super- intendent Platts, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- st., May 31. Stolen from the premises of Noah Allport, of Blower's Green, near Dudley, between 11 p. m. 26th and 5 a. m. on the 27th instant, a grey Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, in fair condition, and has a hole in right ear ; also a set of Harness, brass- mounted, one Cart Saddle, and one Mullen, small spring Cart, painted chocolate, picked out with red, and has a hole in tail board, ' Noah Allport,' on side of cart. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough of Dudley. — Bow- street, May 29. Stolen on the 18th instant, while grazing on Nantwich Barony, a black entire Donkey, with white nose and belly, one hind leg crooked, and about an inch of hair rubbed off the root of tail; the property of Thomas Burrows. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, Cheshire. — Bow- street, May 29. Found on the 19th instant, at Upper Penn, supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown mare Pony, 5 years old, about 12 hands high, bang tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Sedgley, or to P. C. Wright, Upper Penn, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Stolen on the 6tli instant from Wooda Farm, Poughill, the property of Mr. Thomas Ivey : a dark brown maxe Pony, 7 years old, 12J hands high, white star on forehead, black legs, long tail cut square, circular cut at tip of right ear, re- cently torn out by a nail, and marked ' P' under saddle on near side. Information to be given to Superintendent Miller, St. Stephens, Launceston, Cornwall.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen from Glastonbury on the night of the 20th inst.: a dark chesnut cob Horse, 6 years old, 14J hands high, white down face, short square tail, hair off near pin, white saddle marks on back, and is in good condition. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bloxham, Glastonbury, Somerset.— Bow- sireet, May 24. Stolen on the 17t, h instant, from outside Knightsbridge Barracks : a Horse and Gig, the horse a brown mare, 15 hands 1 inch high, white mark on near side, round shoe on near forefoot, leather pad under ; the gig black, with a brown Coat, Rug, two Cushions, and Whip inside. By f? man, short and stout; dressed in light brown overcoat, wideawake hat, had the appearance of a stableman.— Metropolitan Police, B Division, May 22. Stolen between the 9th and 15th instant, from Glandulas Rhos, Llangurig, the property of Mr. Robert Edwards, a dark chestnut mare Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, rough coat, in low condition, long tail, and without shoes ; a light chestnut mare Pony, 2 years old, about 11 hands high, long tail, and has not been shod ; and a dark bay yearling mare Colt, about 10 hands high. Information to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Newtown, or to Sergeant Owen, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen from a field at Little Bromwich on the 13th instant : a brown mare Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands high, marked with ' H' under mane, long tail. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Super- intendent Gallaway, Constabulary Station, Aston, Birming- ham.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen during the night of the 30th ultimo, from a field at Cefnllan Llandyssil, the property of Mr. Richard Burd, a thorough bred brown Mare, 14 hands high, 3 years old, black legs, mane, and tail, and has not been shod. Information to be given to Police Officer Thomas, Montgomery.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen during the night of the 18th instant, from a stable at Vigo, near Chester- le- Street, in the county of Durham, a black draught Horse, 10 or 11 years old, 16 or 17 hands high, white star on forehead, short tail, and fillet bone knocked off far side. Information to be given to Superintendent Squire, Durham Constabulary, County Police Station, Gateshead.— Bow- street, May 22. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen from the dwelling- house of a gentleman, at Moss Side, Lancashire, between 4 and 6 p. m. on the 29th instant, the following property : a lady's gold Geneva Watch, white dial; a lady's gold Guard, plain pattern; a lady's gold Bracelet, ring pattern , twelve small silver Tea Spoon, about 3 inches long ; a lady's gold Locket, inlaid with hair; a silver watch Guard, made of small foreign coins ; a silver Needle- case, two Links of coral Beads with gold snaps, and a £ 5 Bank of England. By two men of the following description : one is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair com- plexion, and light hair ; dressed in a brown cloth coat, dark trousers, and blacK billycock hat; can be identified ; the other is about 22 years of age, and 5 feet 4 inches high ; dressed in dark clothes. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given at the Superintendent's Office, Old Trafford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, May 31. Description of ALFRED V. PLEDGE, charged with stealing £ 5, the moneys of his master, CHARLES BRAN- DAUER, at Birmingham, on the 24th April last : 20 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches higb, fair complexion, round face, and , has a loose gait; dressed in a black surtout coat snd brownish trousers. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glossop, Birmingham, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.— Bow- street, May 31. Absconded 011 the 25th instant, from Warrington, Lanca- shire, charged with stealing six Sovereigns, the property of his employer : MARTIN CAIRNS, an Irishman, a discharged soldier, a butcher by trade, about 35 years of ? ge, 5 feet inches high, stout build, fresh complexion ; dressed in a grey tweed suit and white billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable Hunt, Warrington, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 29. Description of HENRY MALCOLM, a tallyman, charged with embezsding the money of his master, James Milligan, at Brighton. He is about 24 years of age, 6 feet high, fair complexion, sandy hair a little curly, moustache, tuft of hair 011 chin, no whiskers, mark of erysipelas on nose; dressed in dark blue cut- away coat, double- breasted vest to match, light grey trousers, high hat; he has been in the army, and has a military walk. Chief Constables and others issuing Pedlars' Certificates are requested to take notice, as he will probably apply to have his certificate endorsed, or to have a fresh one granted him. Information to be given to Chief Constable George White, Brighton, who has a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 29. Description of THEODORE PRICE, a travelling watch cleaner, charged on a warrant, for that he on the 13th May, 1871, at Bilston, being the bailee of a certain Watch, the pro- perty of John Pritchard, did fraudulently convert the same to his own use : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, small sandy whiskers ; dressed in an old low felt hat, dark green long skirted coat, black vest, pinned in front, no buttons, dark trousers, low shoes, is very talkative, and frequents low public- houses ; he was accompanied by a woman who passes as his wife, 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high ; dressed in a dark jacket, trimmed with white ; both have a very shabby appearance. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Description of JOHN BURNELL, late of Ilkley, brewer's traveller, charged with embezzling at Otley £ 35, the property of William Brumfit, at Ilkley, 011 the 6th instant: he is 30 years of age, about 6 feet high, sallow complexion, high cheiek bones, brown eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, and long moustache, a traveller, and a native of Ilkley, of good education, proportionately built, walks erect, has a gruff voice, and high prominent forehead ; dressed when last seen in drab tweed shooting coat, with velvet collar, trousers and vest of same material, high crowned hat, and spring- side boots ; he has served 12 years in the Royal Horse Artillery, and subsequently served as drill instructor, in the Wakefield Borough Police Force for several months. Photographs may be seen on application. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Croft, West Eiding Constabulary, Otley, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 26. Absconded on the 21st instant, charged with stealing from 49, Shouldham- street, St. Marylebone : £ 5 in Gold ; a pair of man's side- spring Boots : a high black Hat: a man, 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, florid complexion, dark hair, whiskers and beard shaved off; dressed in dark jacket, dark speckled trousers and vest, billycock hat, lace boots, country accent, and slovenly gait.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, May 26. rapid and excited manner; dressed respectably. He absconded on the lst instant, and is supposed to be in some part of London ; he was in business iiL. They have three children, one a girl, about 4 § years of age, dark complexion, and dark brown hair; another about 2^ years of age, dark hair, & c.; and the other an infant, about 3 months old. Stolen on the morning of the 18th instant, a double- barrelled Gun, maker Swinfen, Maidstone. By a tall young ipan, dressed in light clothes and grey cap. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.- Bow- street, May 22. Description of WILLIAM NEWMAN, an apprentice, charged with absenting himself from the employ of his master, Mr. Edwin Packham, ironfounder, No. 68, Western- road, Brighton : about 17 years of age, middle height, dark I complexion, slight make ; dressed in long dark overcoat, dark vest, fustian trousers, bowler hat, a moulder by trade, sup- posed to have left Brighton in company with a man about 20 years of age, a moulder, a native of Lewes, 5 feet 9 inches high, slight make, very hollow eyes, pale face, slouching gait; dressed in fustian trousers, double- breasted vest with bone buttons, round crowned hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 26. Stolen on the 20th instant, from the dressing- rooms of Pembroke and Catherine College, at Fosters University boat- house, at Chesterton next Cambridge : A silver hunting Watch, cracked in face, maker Vale and Co., Coventry, No. 5568, having hair Guard, with gold Bar and Locket attached, the property of Henry Maurice Derwentwater Ratcliffe, Esq., Pem- broke College. A plain silver English lever Watch, maker Mayo, Man- chester, No. 52259, with gold albert Chain attached, the property of William Thompson Esq., Catherine College. A silver Geneva Watch, maker James Ritchie and Son, Edinburgh, supposed No. 20147, with gold albert Chain attached, the property of John Skinner Wilson, Esq., Catherine College. A silver Geneva Watch, with gilt dial, engraved case, seconds haud, and gilt inside, No. 26793, with steel Chain attached, also a gold signet Ring, the property of Hubert Edward Carlyon, Esq., of Catherine College. By a man, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and moustache ; dressed in blue coat, with velvet collar, black trousers, new kid boots, patent leather toes, and blue scarf, with pin in it. He left Cambridge the same evening, by the 6' 55 train to London, where he arrived at 9 o'clock. Was an expert oarsman, and could sit a light wager boat well. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Chesterton, Cambridge. — Bow- street, May 24. Description of JOHN LEWIS, alias NICHOLL, who is charged with stealing a silver Geneva Watch and other articles from a cottage in the parish of Great Torrington, Devonshire : about 32 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers, sallow complexion, and his hands shake ; dressed when last seen in light tweed trousers, stripe down the sides, brown velveteen jacket, round pole hat, and lace- up boots, when at work dressed as a navvy in white slop and heavy boots ; bas been lately employed on the Torrington Railway works. He was formerly in the 80th Regt. of Foot, from which he was discharged through ill health ; he carries his discharge and a small drill book with him ; he is a native of Sutcombe, Devonshire. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Rousham, Devonshire Constabulary Office, Great Torrington.— Bow- street, May 22. Description of JOHN STUART, charged with stealing £ 785 at Liverpool: 48 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, grey hair and whiskers, bald, or hair very thin, no moustache, large face, pleasant looking, very large head, fair and florid complexion, s^ out build, large bunion on one foot, speaks in a FRAUDS AID AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man who gave the name of GEORGE JONES, and represented himself as a watchmaker, and em- ployed by Mr. Evans, of Shrewsbury, charged 011 a warrant with obtaining by means of false pretences, on the 2nd inst., at Yockleton Salop, an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, No. 2046, Blank, the watch was pawned at Shrewsbury, on the 5th instant, and redeemed on the 6th instant: he is about 40 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, narrow features, and slightly pockpitted ; dressed in a shabby- genteel suit of black, high hat, boots patched, but well polished. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Caswell, County Police, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, May 31. Description of a tramp who gave the name of GEORGE MACHIN, alias JOHN JONES, of Swinnerton, Stafford- shire, remanded to Llandysilio Petty Sessions on the 3rd ultimo, on a charge of larceny ; is 47 years of age, 5 feet inches high, brown hair mixed with grey, sandy whiskers, cut back under chin, brown eyes, lost some upper front teeth, and part of his right ear, and a cut inside fore finger of right hand ; states he served nine years in the 4th Regt. of Foot, and was discharged November, 1869, and has been, tramping about the country since. Desdription of a man who is in custody at Bromyard Lockup charged with entering the cottage, of Mrs. Ann Wall, on Bromyard Downs by means of skeleton keys on the 19th mstant, and stealing therein a Coat, since recovered; seven skeleton keys and a crowbar were found on him : he is about 33 years of age, proportionate make, about 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair turning grey, whiskers shaved off, dark moustache, broad features, hazel eyes ; dressed in light stripe ribbed trousers, a dark double- breasted waistcoat with light stripe, a dark jacket with small white spots, side- spring boots, and a black low- crowned hat, all nearly new. He gives the name of JOHN HENRY, and states his resi- dence to be Ford or Fore- street. Since he has been in custody he has attempted to hang himself. There was another man with him at the time he committed the offence, who made his escape, of the following description : about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high; dressed in dark coat and trousers, black high hat, supposed, felt, rather broad brim, light complexion, rather thin face, and supposed to be either a Welshman or an Irishman.
