CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, ref Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are net hnoum, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the SSgnature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may he made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. A silver Geneva, one hand missing, gold curb albert Chain, with cross bar at end. 50s. reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. A silver Watch, with gold Chain and Locket, maker Carter, Salisbury. £ 2 reward will be paid for the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person on Harpenden race- course on the 19th instant: a silver Watch with gold albert Chain at- tached, the property of Mr. Dixon, of Hemel Hempstead. Information to be given to Inspector Chapman, Hatfield, or to Inspector Baurne, Hemel Hempsted, Herts.— Bow- street, " 24. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded, PATRICK O'BRIEN, late of Farnworth, charged with maliciously assaulting a Police Constable at Farnworth, near Bolton, Lancashire, on the 15th instant : he is 30 to 32 years of age, but looks younger, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, rather dark, very red on the cheek bones, black hair, brown eyes, no whiskers, of smart appear- ance, and walks very erect; he is a temperer of clay in a brickyard ; dressed in blue pilot monkey jacket, dark cloth trousers and vest, and cloth cap : his wife and family are living at Farnworth. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Holland, Town Hall, Little Bolton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 19. Charged with Stabbing Henry George Hunt, potman at the Black Boy public- house, Whitecross- street, a man 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, red hair, grey eyes, pug nose ; dressed in black frock coat, cord trousers, plaid scarf, and felt hat. Known in the neighbourhood.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, May 17. Stolen from the person of Mr. Thomas Lewis, of Wistan- stow, Shropshire, on the night of the 15th instant, whilst returning from Church Stretton fair in a state of drunken- ness : a £ 20 Bank of England Note, indorsed on the back ' Thomas Jones, Salop;' four Sovereigns, and a Half- sovereign, all in washleather Bag with two compartments and a reeving string round the top. £ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. Lewis upon the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Baxter, Church Stretton, Salop.— Bow- street, May 22. On the 12th instant, Ellen Barber was robbed of a Purse and 7s. 6d. in Silver, on the highway, Wooler, Northumber- land : by a man 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, brown hair, ginger whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark brown frock coat, and of dirty appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Marshall, Lowick, Northum- berland.— Bow- street, May 17. FORGERY. Absconded on the 15th instant, from No. 53, St. Leonard's Boad, Bromley, Middlesex, charged with stealing three Cheques for forty- two pounds seventeen shillings, and forging a Bill of Acceptance for Thirty- two Pounds : a surgeon's assistant, 40 yrs. of age, 5 ft . 7 ins. high, ruddy complexion, bald, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in black coat, vest, and trousers, and high black hat.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, May 19. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen between the 9th and 15th instant, from Glandulas Rhos, Llangurig, the property of Mr. Bobert Edwards, a dark chestnut mare Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, rough coat, in low condition, long tail, and without shoes ; a light chestnut mare Pony, 2 years old, about 11 hands high, long tail, and has not been shod ; and a dark bay yearling mare Colt, about 10 hands high. Information to be given at the Chief Con- stable's Office, Newtown, or to Sergeant Owen, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen from a field at Little Bromwich on the 13th instant : a brown mare Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands high, marked with ' H' under mane, long tail. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the horse. Information to be given to Super- intendent Gallaway, Constabulary Station, Aston, Birming ham.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen during the night of the 30th ultimo, from a field at Cefnllan Llandyssil, the property of Mr. Richard Burd, a thorough bred brown Mare, 14 hands high, 3 years old, black legs, mane, and tail, and has not been shod. Information to be given to Bolice Officer Thomas, Montgomery.— Bow- street, May 22. Stolen during the night of the 18th instant, from a stable at Vigo, near Chester- le- Street, in the county of Durham, a black draught Horse, 10 or 11 years old, 16 or 17 hands high, white star on forehead, short tail, and fillet bone knocked off far side. Information to be given to Superintendent Squire, Durham Constabulary, County Police Station, Gateshead.— Bow- street, May 22. Further information respecting the white cob Gelding, as stolen from a stable at Mapledurham, Oxon, on the night of the lst instant, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th instant, the property of Mr. W. Bullock : it is about 15 hands high, aged, small lump on near thigh from a kick, a mark behind off fore leg caused by the sear of a hot iron, and long bang'tail; a set of light brass mounted Harness, breeching, reins and bellyband repaired with copper rivets ; also a dark green spring Cart, picked out with light green, ferrule and point broken off the off shaft, drawn from the axletree by Between 4 and 12 p. m. on the 20th instant the house of j chains, panel of tailboard recently repaired, hi, c; h wheels with William Brooks, of Friskney, in the county of Lincoln, was ( half- round tiers, ' W. B.' in gilt letters on each side, Collin's broken and entered, and stolen therein : a light twilled cloth patent axles, maker ' Lewington, Reading,' on box of wheels. Jacket or Coat ( near a drab), nearly new, with two outside! A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Mr. W. Bullock to any pockets and one inside lefs breast, three seams down the back,' person or persons who will give such information as shall lead light buttons ; about 1 lb. of cooked Mutton ; and 3 lbs. of . to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from Morwell Farm Marsh, Tavistock, Devon, about the 13th instant, the property of Mr. Richard Stevens : Friskney, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, May 24. During the night of the 18th instant, the dwelling- house, No. 24, Calverley- park, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : a silver Dessert Spoon and a grey roan horse Colt, 12 months old, about 14 hands high, two silver Tea Spoons, crest— a mailed hand holding an arrow, Information to be given to Superintendent Pickford, Devon supported by a crown, with motto, ' Quondam his vicinus' Constabulary, Tavistock.— Bow- street, May 19. armis ;" a small silver Sugar Spoon, in the form of a leaf: j . ... „.,. . ,, _. ,, and a round brass Clock, about 4 inches across. Information ! , S, tol? n about the 30th ult., from Mrs. Bird's, Llandyssil: to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, — Bow- street, May 22 ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a lady on the 22nd instant, between Blackburn and Brooks' Bar, Chorlton- road, Man- chester, via Bailway : a black velvet Purse, with steel clasps, small size, containing two £ 100 Band of England Notes, the name ' Wm. Eccles' written on each Note, in a lady's hand writing, also the month and day, either ' April or May,' together with thirteen Sovereigns. Whoever will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the notes shall receive £ 10 reward, on application to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Black- burn.— Bow- street, May 26. Description of a silver Watch stolen from the person on the night of the 20th instant, at Castleford, in the West Biding of the county of York, it is capped, engine- turned case, silver dial, maker Jackson, Goole, No. 77235 : By a man named TWEED, since apprehended. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Pontefract, or to Inspector Beevers, Castleford.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen on the 20th instant from the person of GEORGE WILKINS, in the parish of Keymer, Sussex : a small Bag- containing £ 24 in Gold, by CALEB SMITH, of Preston, near Brighton, about 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, and is a horse dealer; dressed in a long dark coat with pockets at sides, cord trousers, plaid vest, alpine hat, and heavy half boots; he attends fairs and races. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, or to Superintendent Bocock, Cuckfield, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 24. Further information respecting the Watches stolen on Salisbury Bace Course on the 18th instant: A gold Watch and Chain, twisted, with a gold American Dollar at the end, No. 20051, initials ' M. J. M.' on back of case. £ 5 reward will be given for the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender or offenders. Between 12 midnight 15th, and 5 a. m. on the 16th inst., the dwelling house and shop of William Birchenough, grocer, Market- street, Crewe, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about 5s. in Silver and Copper, from the drawer; about 1 lb. of Tobacco, 1 lb. of Biscuits, and half a dish of Butter, from the shop ; a pair of elastic- side Boots, half worn, had been soled, heeled, and toe- capped, the sole of one has been sprung and fastened with two sprigs, a meerschaum Pipe and dark green Case, from the sitting room. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Inspector Wood, Police Office, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, May 19. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found on the 19th instant, at Upper Penn, supposed to have been stolen : a dark brown mare Pony, 5 years old, about 12 hands bigh, bang tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Sedgley, or to P. C. Wright, Upper Penn, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 26. Stolen on the 6th instant from Wooda Farm, Poughill, the property of Mr. Thomas Ivey : a dark brown mare Pony, 7 years old, 12^ hands high, white star on forehead, black legs, long tail cut square, circular cut at tip of right ear, re- cently torn out by a nail, and marked ' P' under saddle on near side. Information to be given to Superintendent Miller, St. Stephens, Launceston, Cornwall.— Bow- street, May 24. Stolen from Glastonbury on the night of the 20th inst.: a dark chesnut cob Horse, 6 years old, 14- lr hands high, white down face, short square tail, hair off near pin, white saddle marks on back, and is in good condition. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bloxham, Glastonbury, Somerset.— Bow street, May 24. Stolen on the 17th instant, from outside Knightsbridge Barracks : a Horse and Gig, the horse a brown mare, 15 hands 1 inch high, white mark on near side, round shoe on near forefoot, leather pad under ; the gig black, with a brown Coat, Bug, two Cushions, and Whip inside. By a man, short and stout; dressed in light brown overcoat, wideawake hat, had the appearance of a stableman.- - Metropolitan Police, B Division, May 22. a dark brown filly Bony, 3 years old, black legs, long tail, and has not been broken. Information to be given to P. C. Thomas, Montgomery, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown.— Bow- street, May 19. Stolen from Borkington- park, near Oswestry, Salop, on the 13th instant: a bay horse Pony, 5 years old, about 12 hands high, and thick bang tail, the property of J. B. O. Gore, Esq. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, Police Station, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, May 19. Fifty Pounds reward is offered by Mr. W. Bullock to any person or persons who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders who stole the Horse and Cart from Mapledurham, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th instant. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Owen, or to Superinten- dent Coates, Police Station, Henley- on- Thames, Oxon.— Bow- street, May 19. The iron grey cart Mare, stolen from Monk Frystone, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 2nd November last, is supposed now to have a foal. £ 5 reward will be paid on recovery of the mare, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Wardle, West Biding Constabulary, Selby.— Bow- street, 17. Stolen from a field iu the parish of Old Dally, Leicester- shire, between 11 a. m. on the 14th and 4 p. m. on the 15th instant : a light chesnut Horse, 3 years old, 14 hands high, white face, little white on the off fore foot, white near bind foot, switch tail, in fair condition. Information to be given' to Superintendent Platt, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, May 17. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of THEODORE PRICE, a travelling watch cleaner, charged on a warrant, for that he on the 13th May, 1871, at Bilston, being the bailee of a certain Watch, the pro- perty of John Pritchard, did fraudulently convert the same to his own use : be is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, small sandy whiskers ; dressed in an old low felt hat, dark green long skirted coat, black vest, pinned in front, no buttons, dark trousers, low shoes, is very talkative, and frequents low public- houses ; he was accompanied by a woman ... his wife, 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high ; dark jacket, trimmed with white ; both have a appearance. Information to be given to Chief ent McCrea, Police Office, Bilston, Staffordshire.— lay 26. ption of JOHN BURNELL, late of Ilkley, iveller, charged with embezzling at Otley £ 35, the William Brumfit, at Ilkley, on the 6th instant: ars of age, about 6 feet high, sallow complexion, . t bones, brown eyes, dark brown hair and whiskers, moustache, a traveller, and a native of Ilkley, of cation, proportionately built, walks erect, has a gruff id high prominent forehead ; dressed when last seen p tweed shooting coat, with velvet collar, trousers and of same material, high ' crowned hat, and spring- side oots ; he has served 12-, yp: irs in the Royal Horse Artillery, and subsequently served as drill instructor, in the Wakefield Borough Police Force for several months. Absconded on the 21st instant, charged with stealing from 49, Shouldham- street, St. Marylebone : £ 5 in Gold pair of man's side- spring Boots : a high black Hat: a man, .28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, florid complexion, dark " hair, whiskers and beard shaved off; dressed in dark jacket, dark speckled trousers and vest, billycock hat, lace boots, country accent, and slovenly gait.— Metropolitan, Police, D Division, May 26. Description of WILLIAM NEWMAN, an apprentice, charged with absenting himself from the employ of his master, Mr. Edwin Packham, ironfounder. No. 68, Western- road, Brighton : about 17 years of age, middle height, dark complexion, slight make ; dressed in long dark overcoat, dark vest, fustian trousers, bowler hat, a moulder by trade, sup- posed to hayejeft Brighton in company with a man about 20 years of age, a moulder, a native of Lewes,. 5 feet 9 inches high, slight make, very hollow eyes, pale face, slouching gait ; dressed iu fustian trousers, double- breasted vest with bone buttons, round crowned hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 26. Stolen on the 20th instant, f- rom the dressing- rooms' of Pembroke and Catherine College, at Fosters University boat- house, at Chesterton next Cambridge : A silver hunting Watch, cracked in face, maker Yale anil Co., Coventry,, No. 5568, having hair Guard, with gold Bar and Locket attached, the property of Henry Maurice Derwentwater Ratcliffe, Esq., Pem- broke College. A plain silver English lever Watch, maker Mayo, Man- chester, No. 52239, with gold albert Chain- attached, the property of: William Thompson Esq., Catherine College. A silver Geneva Watch, maker James Ritchie and Son, Edinburgh, supposed No. 20147, with gold albert Chain attached, the property of John Skinner Wilson, Esq., Catherine College. A silver. Geneva Watch, . with gilt dial, engraved, case, seconds hand, and gilt inside, No. 26793, with steel Chain attached, also- a gold signet Ring, the property or Hubert Edward Carlyon, Esq., of Catherine College. By a man, about 24 years of age, 5 feet-, 4 inches high, dark complexion, hair, an., moustache ; dressed iu blue coat, with velvet collar, black trousers, . new kid boots, patent leather toes, and blue scarf, with pin in it. He left Cambridge the same evening,- by the 0: 55 train to London, where lie arrived at 9 o'clock. Was an ' expert- oarsman, and could sit a light wager boat well. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Stretten, Chesterton, Cambridge. — Bow- street, May 24. Description of JOHN LEWIS, alias NICHOLL, who is charged with stealing a silver Geneva Watch and other articles from a cottage in tho parish of Great Torrington. Devonshire: about 32 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light brown hair, no . whiskers, sallow. complexion, and his hands shake; dressed when - last seen in light tweed trousers, stripe down the sides, brown velveteen jacket, round pole hat, aud lace- u H . when at work dressed as a navvy Tn white slop anil heavy boots ; has been lately employed on the Torrington Railway works. He' was formerly m the 80th Regt. of Foot, from which, he was discharged through ill health ; he carries hi; discharge and a small drill book with him ; he is a. native of Sutcombe, Devonshire. Description of JOHN STUART, charged with stealing £ 785 at Liverpool: 48 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, grey hair and whiskers,- b$ ld, or Lair very thin, no moustache, large face, pleasant looking, very large head, fair and florid complexion,- stout build, large bunion on one foot, speaks in a rapid and excited manner; dressed respectably. He absconded on the lst instant, and is • supposed to be in some . part of London ; he was in business in Liverpool as a watch manu facturer on an extensive scale. A warrant has been issued and £ 50 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Kehoe, Detectivo Depart- ment, Central ' Police Office, Liverpool.— Bow- street, May 22; Absconded from Colchester, on the lst instant, taking with him a number of silver Watches,' entrusted to him to clean and repair : a watchmaker, who gave the name of W. ROSS, and who has resided at the Hythe, Colchester, since the 14th November last, he is about 55 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, very dark hair and whiskers, dark com- plexion and eyes, stout build, good teeth, and has a large swelling on left side of neek, which causes him to carry his head on one side ; dressed iu a black frock coat, black vest and trousers, and high black hat, and generally wears a white apron when out walking; he stated he was a native of London, and had worked a great deal in the City. He is accompanied by his wife, who is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, . light brown hair, which curls all round, and fair complexion ; dressed in a brown linsey dress, black jacket or waterproof cloak, small white straw hat, with black ribbon round. They have three children, one a girl, about 4j years of age, dark complexion, and dark brown hair; another about years of age, dark hair, & c.; and the other an infant, about 3 months old. It is supposed they have gone to London. Information to be given to Head Constable Downes, Town Hall, Colchester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.—- Bow- street. May ' 22. Stolen on the morning of the 18th instant, a double- barrelled Gun, maker Swinfen, Maidstone. By a tall young man, dressed in light clothes and grey cap. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Police Office, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, May 22. Absconded on the, 17tli instant, from No. 3, James- street, Chiswick, charged with stealing Seven Pounds Ten Shillings in gold, and Seven Shillings in silver : a man, 19 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, nearly white hair; dressed in dark cord trousers and vest, and side- spring boots. — Metropolitan Police, T Division, May 19. Absconded on the 16th instant, from No. 54, Hans- place, Chelsea, charged with stealing Six Five Pound Bank of England Notes, and Four Pounds in Gold : a footman, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 iuches high, fair complexion, and dark and eyes; dressed in dark cloth coat and vest, dark mix- ture trousers, and new felt hat. — Metropolitan Police, B Division, May 19. Absconded from Rhymney Iron Works, between 3 and 4 a. m; on the 10th instant, charged on a warrant with stealing a - new pilot cloth monkey Jacket; a pair of elastic- side Boots, Since found pledged ; a half- worn grey cloth Coat, pockets on hips, and one inside left breast, lined with black and red flannel lining, and torn under arm- pit; a pair of half- worn grey wocllen cloth Trousers, singed in front of legs, fly front; a cotton Muffler, red, but much, faded ; and a Church of England Prayer Book, the property of Stephen Merritt : WILLIAM SMITH, a labourer at iron- works, a native of Woolwich, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, propor- tionate figure, light hair, no whiskers, and light moustache ; dressed in the stolen coat and trousers, dark cloth vest, lace- up working- boots, Check shirt, and dark woollen knitted cap with peak, walks erect, and has been a soldier; he is much addicted to drink, and likely to be found labouring in iron- works. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk ; or to Superintendent Fowler, Tredegar, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, May 19. Description of JOHN McCARNEY, charged with stealing a green plaid Coat, a pair of cord Trousers, a woollen Shirt, a cloth Cap and a Vest, from his master, on the 15th instant: 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, stout make, black curly hair, full face ; he is wearing the stolen clothes ; is a sweep, and has worked in Liverpool, Manchester, aud other large towns. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Superinten- dent Glossop, Birmingham.— Bow- street, May 17.
