The Names oj Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. " Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all ILetters addressed to the Editor must i » e prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. An inquest was held at the Woodman inn, Glass Houghton, on the 25th instant, on the Body of a newly- born male Child which was found dead in a privy connected with the above inn, ou the 24th instant, and it is supposed to have been there about two months : the child had a piece of white cotton tied tight round its neck, the cotton has formed the bottom of one slop of a pair of woman's drawers, and has five tucks in it. A verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent- Hall, West Riding Constabulary, Court House, Pontefract. Bow- street, April 28. On the 13th instant, the body of a newly- born male Child was found in the river Eden, having been strangled, and a verdict of ' Wilful murder,' was returned by the coroner's jury against some person or persons unknown. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the actual murderer, who shall give such evidence as shall lead to a like result. Information to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, May 5. The man who escaped from custody, charged with house- breaking at Uckfield, Sussex, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th ultimo, has been re- apprehended; the other one is still at large. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, Sussex, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— bow- street, May 5. Description of JOHN LAINE, charged with house- breaking on the 13th January last at Snnderland : about 24 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, no whiskers, slight light brown moustache, light auburn hair, weak eyes, slender build, a native of London, and is supposed to have a relative residing in the neighbourhood of Battersea ; be is supposed to be a returned convict. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsb}', Police Station, Sunderland.— Bow- street, May 5. During the night of the 29t. li ultimo, the mill office of James Carlton and Co., at Bonsall, was broken into and stolen therein : a £ 20 Bank of England Note, W/ 8— 00475, dated at Manchester, 6th January, 1871 ; about £ 5 in Silver, 2s. in Copper, and two foreign copper or bronze Coins, one about the size of a sixpence, the other of a fourpenny piece, but not so thick. Information to be given to the Officer in charge, Police Station, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.— Bow- st., May 3. The cottage of William Page, of Saint, Leonards, borough of Bridgnorth, was broken and entered between 3 and * p. m. on the IsS instant, and a silver 1i'r. t •'••., £ 1, two Half- sovereigns, and 15a stolen therein; supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Head Constable Cole, Borough Police Office, Bridgnorth.— B< ivi- street, May 3. Stolen from a dwelling- house at Eccles, between 3 and 4 p. m. on the 27th ultimo, by means of housebreaking : a lady's gold Geneva Watch, No, 20828 ; a lady's gold Chain, with gold pencil Case and Locket attached, locket contains two photographs of a lady and gentleman : a gentleman's silver lever Watch, No. 3175, maker W. Kent ; ten silver tea Spoons, plain, crest— a lion ; a pair of ornamental sugar Tongs; a gold wedding Ring, much worn; a gold Ear- ring, plain, much worn ; four or five silver Coins ; a silk pocket Hand- kerchief, blue border aud spots ; four other silk pocket Hand kerchief, some of which are pinlcanil buff- coloured. Suspicion is attached to two young men of low stature, dark complexion, with moustaches ; dressed in dark clothes, and billycock hats, and one had a peculiar look about his eyes. Information to be given at the County Police Office, Old Traftord, near Manchester.— Bow- street, May 1. FORGERY. Absconded, charged on a warrant with forging and utter- ing a Cheque for £ 50 ; PRIOR A. SIMON, late of No. 9, Frankford- terrce, Harrow- road, Middlesex, commercial tra- veller, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyebrows, hair ( cut short), and moustache ( small), chin and cheeks shaved ; dressed in a cutaway coat, dark plaid striped trousers, wide- toed boots, and napless hat. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, May 3. Absconded on the 13th instant, charged with forgery and embezzlement: a clerk, 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, whiskers, and moustache ( may have shaved), small lump on forehead, thin, and sunken eyes ; generally dresses in black ; very fond of billiards. He may use the name of WILSON. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Department, Scotland- yard.— Bow- st., April 26. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the 24th ult., from gentlemen, at Hambledon Steeplechases : a small gold hunting Watch, makers Messrs. Lambert and Rowland, London, blue enamelled back, on which is the monogram ' GW,' engine turned, small dial, maker Badollet,- No. 31102, purchased from Messrs. Lambert, Coventry- street, London; and a gold Geneva horizontal Watch, No. 16165, maker Moulinie, open face, white dial, with centre seconds hand. Information to be given to Super- intendent Drew, Fareham, Hants.— Bow- street, May 5. Stolen from the person at Abergavenny Races, on the 27th ultimo: a small silver lever Watch, maker Webb, Brecon, No. 7531, and a gold albert Chain, with Pencil attached. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk, or to Superintendent Freeman, Abergavenny.— Bow- street, May 1. Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Bow- street, May 1. Wellington, Salop- Stolen on the night of the 22nd instant, from a field at Great Linford, Bucks : two half- bred Lambs, about 5 weeks old, marked with a dot of ruddle on near side, the property of Mr. G. W. Huntley, farmer. Information to be given to Inspector Hall, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow- st., April 28. Stolen from Birch- End Farm, Wichenford, on the night of the 25th instant, a half- bred dark bay Horse, 6 years old, nearly 15 hands high, short tail, streak of white down nose, white on near hind foot, well shod all round, flat- footed, and in good condition, the property of Mr. E. Clarke. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Phillips, County Police Station, Worcester.— Bow- street, April 28. Between 8 p. m. on the 22nd and 6 a. m. on the 23rd instant, a fat hogget Sheep was stolen from a field at Milford, and slaughtered in White Coat Plantation adjoining, and the skin, head, feet, and part of entrails were found there. The sheep had been killed by an inexperienced hand, the skin was cut to pieces, and part of the flesh left on the skin. Information to be given to Superintendent Wardle, West Riding Constabulary, Selby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, April 26. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 2nd instant, the dwelling- house of Captain Critchell, 2, Queen's Villas, Windsor, was broken HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Walsall, during the morning of the 26th ultimo, a light brown entire Pony, three years old, 11} hands high, dark legs, long tail, white star on forehead, in good condition, and had a chain round its neck. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 3. Stolen from a field at Glossop during the night of the 18th ultimo : a black Colt, rising 3 years, white star on fore- head, and has had a piece taken ou t of its nostrils. £ 1 reward will be given on its recovery and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Head Constable Beard, Town Hall, Glossop.— Bow- street, May 1. Found in Macclesfield on the 18th ultimo, supposed to have been stolen, a black gelding Colt, of the cart breed, rising three years old, 13} hands high, small white star on forehead, rough legs, and has a little white on the inside of both hind feet. Information to be given to Head Constable Etchells, Macclesfield, Cheshire.- Bern- street, May 1. Supposed stolen from a field at Walsall : a brown Colt, 3 years old, 13 hands high, white on one of the hind legs, long tail and mane. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Cater, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, May 1. Stolen from a stable at Watling- street, Wellington, about 2' 30 a. m. on the 25th ultimo : a dark bay mare Pony, about 14 hands high, 6 years old, in good condition, bang tail, has a few white hairs down the face, a little white on left hind foot and newly shod ; a set of brass- mounted black Harness, half worn ; a small riding Saddle ; an old brown and white striped Rug, torn in several places ; a cart horse Bridle, brass plate on winkers, marked ' T. P.;' a pair of driving Reins ; a'Seg^ Collar ; a Pitch Fork and Shovel; a dandy Brush ; and large railway waggon tar Sheets, with ' G. W. R.' in white paint on each side. Also stolen from the yard, a dark brown spring Cart, with ' James Peake, Watling- street, Salop' painted in red and white ou cart. By a man about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dressed in dark clothes. He was traced with the Pony and Cart in his possession within one mile of Stafford, going in the direction of Stone and the Staffordshire Potteries. £ 5 5s. reward is offered for the apprehension and conviction of the offender, and recovery of the property. Information to be given to LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen about 9' 30 a. m., the 29th ultimo, from a house in Durham : a patent silver lever Watch, without cap ; one pair of men's dark ribbed cloth Trousers, lined with grey calico, full falls ; one black frock Coat, single breasted ; one black cloth Vest, buttoned up to the throat; one common Bed- tick ; and a pair of blucher Boots, nearly new. All men's size. By a young woman who had been lodging there for a few nights and absconded. She is 17 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, f- esb complexion, and full features; dressed in pace stuff dressj'biack cJcrth jacket, nod W. t- rk liat. with root rose in front, and said her parents resided in Elswick- road, Newcastle- on- Tyne. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wilson, Town Hall, Durham.— Bow- street, May 5. Absconded on the 26th ultimo, charged with embezzling £ 380 : a clerk, late of No. 95, Camden- street, St. Pancras, 28 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion and hair ; dressed in dark suit and high black hat ; supposed will go to Derby.— Metropolitan Police, M Division, May 5. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, charged with stealing from No. 21, Nottingham- place, St. Marylebone, four Table Spoons, crest - a scallop shell; a Cup, plain pattern, mounted on three knobs, ' K K. D.' on one side, ' P. P. S.' on the other ; a Lla; frock Coat, pockets behind and in left breast; a pair of men's sidespring Boots, imitation lace and toecaps ; a Suit of superfine diagonal black elastic cloth ( coat with pockets behind, one outside left and one inside right breast) ; an old blu .' frock Coat; and a black silk dress Skirt, with deep black velvet trimming and band : a butler, 39 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, sallow complexion, black hair, no whiskers, thick- set; dressed in dark blue overcoat, black cloth trousf r and high black hat ; formerly employed at the Great Eastern and Great Western Railways.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, May 5. Stolen between 7 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 2nd instant, from a pub: : c- house at Rotherham, the property of G. C. Wynn, the landlord : a lady's small gold Geneva Watch, with gilt dial, No. 80670, maker Stauffer ; a lady's gold fancy twisted Guard, has been broken and is tied with cotton thread, and had on a runner ; an old- fashioned gold Mourning Ring, ' Annie Maria Webb' engraved inside ; and a gold Ring, with three blue and white stones and a red one in the centre. By a man, a clerk, who lodged in the house a few nights and absconded, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow com- plexion, dark brown hair, inclined to curl, no whiskers, slender build, and has injured two knuckles of one hand; dressed in a light grey mixture cloth coat and trousers, black cloth vest, elastic- side boots, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillett, West Riding Constabulary Court House, Rotherham, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, May 5. Stolen from the Bull public- house, Bishops Stortford, about 10 p. m. on the lst instant: two gold Watches, one watch has the figures of a man and woman on the back, the other is a plain watch, with a broken glass; also stolen a black Coat, pockets outside, breast pocket inside, flexible buttons , a pair of black Trousers, whole fall; a dark Waist- coat ; and a pair of lace balmoral boots. By a man who had been lodging there a week, about 28 years of age, fair com- plexion, shaved clean ; he stated that he belonged to the Royal Artillery at Woolwich, and had on the uniform of a sergeant. He was seen with the stolen clothes over his uniform, inquiring the way to Cambridge ; he told the land- lady he was waiting for his Colonel, who was coming to survey the neighbourhood. Information to be given to Superintendent Ryder, Bishops Stortford, Herts.— Bow- street, May 3. Description of WILLIAM RIDDLE, grocer's assistant, charged under warrant with embezzling £ 6 9s. lOd. and other monies, the property of his employers, William Smith and Sons, tea merchants, Bradford, Yorkshire : he is 28 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, pale complexion, beardless," light hair, grey eyes, top lip rather prominent, and of good address ; frequents public- houses, and is fond of playing billiards. ' MARY ANN CHATFIELD, 21 year.? of- age, 5 feet high, " pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, cut on nose, rather good looking ; states she is the wife of John Chatfield, and a native of Roscommon. JOSEPH FLYNN, 18 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slightly made, fair complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, pockmarked; has a pedlar's certificate issued at Bath in" his possession. GEOBGE WELSH, 39 years of age. r> foot 2 inches high, slightly made, sallow complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, broken nose ; he says he is a native of Belfast. GEORGE MAINE, 48 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, proportionate make, pale complexion, grey hair, blue eyes ; a native of Northampton. WILLIAM NEEDLE, 29 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, proportionate make, fair complexion, sandy hair, blue eyes, scar under right eye, and walks lame; says he comes from Bradford. EDWARD CONNOR, 16 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on chin, impediment in his speech ; says he is a native of Staffford. Description of licence holders who have failed to report themselves at a Metropolitan Police Station, as required by the Penal Servitude Act, 1864 : CATHERINE THOMPSON, No. 659, 32 years ® f age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, scars on forehead and right cheek ; was sentenced to 7 years'penal servitude at Middlesex Sessions for larceny and previous conviction ; lier sentence wifl expire on the 4th February. 1873. WILLIAM THOMPSON, No. 8488, 28 years of age, 5 feet. 6J inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, crippled and contracted right hand ; was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude at Oxford Sessions, for larceny ; his sentence will expire on the 6th of January, 1872. These licence- holdei- s cannot be found at the addresses given by them, and they are to be apprehended by any constable at any time prior to date of expiration of sentence, and the fact reported immediately to the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, London, S. Committed to the House of Correction, Northallerton, on the 29th ult., for 6 weeks' hard labour, for larceny at Whitby • ARTHUR MILLER, of No. 164, Westgate, Wakefield, a mason, but lately has travelled as a hawker, 53 vears of age, 5 feet 4| inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, brown whiskers rouud the face turning grey, cut mark on right cheek, blue mark over left eye, cut marks on left side of upper and lower lips, and has'had his right wrist broken; dressed in a brown cloth coat, striped cloth vest, old black cloth trousers, lace- up boots, aud black billycock hat. And GEORGE WATSON, of York- street, Leeds, afettler, but has lately travelled as an umbrella mender, 25 years of of age, 5 feet inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, no whiskers, fat face, stout make, cut mark on forehead, and scar on right cheek; dressed in an old black coat and vest, dirty moleskin trousers, lace- up boots, and round black felt hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Clarkson, North Riding Constabulary, Whitby,— BoW- n'reet, May 3. on application to Chief Constable Wilson, Town Hall, Dur- i ham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Haw- street, May 1. 1 Absconded from Blaina, between 6 and 7 a. m. on tlie 13th ultimo, charged on a warrant with stealing a dark cloth Coat, double- breasted, pockets at sides and dark lining ; a dark cloth Vest; a pair of dark striped Trousers ; a welsh plaid flannel Shirt; a pair of plaid flannel ' Drawers; and a black bowler Hat; the property of Charles Chappel : WM. YOUNG, a fitter or labourer, about 29 years of age, 5 feet j 8 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair, light dowley whiskers and moustache, slightly pockmarked, and has ' B. C.' on right side ; dressed in Scotch cap, dark pilot cloth coat, pockets at sides, dark cloth vest, light moleskin trousers ( dirty), and strong Working boots, or ma> be wearing the stolen clothes. Has been in the Army, also a sailor, and is a native of Bristol, where he has a relative living at Winsford- street, Stapleton- ro- ad. Description of JOHN CROOK, a fishmonger and poulterer, who absconded from St. Leonard's- on- Sea on tlie 23rd inst., and who is charged on a warrant with embezzling several sums of money of his masters, Messrs. Gilson and Allen : he is 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches !•• a, fair com- plexion, fresh colour, rough brown liair, small n. austache and whiskers, a small tuft of hair on the chin, and has a mole on the right cheek ; dressed in a brown overcoat with velvet collar, striped trousers, shiny leather leggings, and high wide- awake hat; had with him two small black leather bags ; he is a native of Bath, where his father carries on business as a fishmonger, & c. Information to be given at the Police Office, St. Leonard's- on- Sea, or to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, Sussex— Bow- street, April 28. On the night of the 25th instant at the parish of Routh, i in the East Riding of York, the Hair was cut and stolen from the tails of 30 horses, the property of Messrs. Whiting, Stephenson, and Catton, farmers ; the hair is black, chestnut, 1 and grey. Information to be given to Superintendent Wright, East Riding Constabulary, Police Station, Leven, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, April 28. Description of a butcher named HENRY AUSTIN, who is charged with embezzling £ 3 Os. Id., the money of his master, Elisha Port, at Brighton : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, Jewish appearance, black curly hair, large nose, slight moustache, and one hand injured by the bursting of a gun. Has a relative at Tunbridge Wells, and is acquainted with a man who is supposed to be employed by the South Eastern Railway Company, at the Bricklayers' Arms. Information to be " given to Chief Constable White, Brighton, who has a warrant for liis apprehension.— Bow- st., April 28. Absconded on the 24tli instant, from 53, Euston- square, charged with stealing three pair of black cloth Trousers ; a browu Overcoat, velvet collar ; and a pair of spring- side Boots: a butler, 25 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, no whiskers, light hair ; dressed in black cut- away coat, black vest and trousers, and high hat.- Metropo- litan Police, E Division, April 28. Absconded from Wimborne Minster, charged with em- bezzling a large sum of money belonging to that parish : WILLIAM PITT, assistant overseer, 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, rather small grey- eyes, small dark whiskers mostly worn under the chin, walks very erect, thin figure ; dressed in dark clothes and high liat; he took with him a carpet bag and a rug. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Hammond, Dorset Consta- bulary, Wimborne, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. - Bow- street, April 28. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described).
