POLICE GAZETTE. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5032 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature ol the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D, BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE G- AZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Charged on a judges' warrant, with arson : JOHN FREDERICK GOODERHAM, late manager of the ' Black Bull' public- house, Bird Cage- alley, High- street, Borough, 39 years of age, 6 feet high, stout, fresh complexion, light hair, and large sandy whiskers ; dressed in a light drab suit, and'brown felt hat; he bets, and attends races.— Metro- politan Police, M Division, April 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Bolton, on the 10th instant : a gold lever Watch, maker W. S. J ones, Bolton, No. 2018 oil the movement and dial, had attached a gold curb Guard. £ 5 reward will be paid for the recovery of the property, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Borough Police Office, Bolton.— Bow- street, April 14. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found on the 13th instant, supposed to have been stolen, a bay Pony, aged, white star or blaze on forehead, a little white on near fetlock, and a few white hairs on back in two different places from being hurt, and appears to have had foals. Information may be obtained on application to Super- intendent Ivins, Bridgnorth, where the pony now is.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen on the 11th instant, from a stable at Ribbesford : a dark brown cart Mare, with a brown muzzle, white off hind foot, star in face, 5 years old, from 15 to 16 hands high, been recently shod, maker' John Judge,' on the shoes. Information to be given to Superintendent Raby, Great Witley, or to Sergeant Ganderton, Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, April 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of RICHARD DAGLESS, a native of Burgh, near Aylsham, tramping blacksmith, charged with stealing-, on the 12th instant, a^ Shovel and Fork ( the shovel has since been recovered) : he is from 35 to 40 years of age, dark hair, and swarthy complexion; dressedr in a Scotch cap, ragged brown cloth coat, the left boot cut down below the ankle, walks lame, has been a soldier, and will be likely to apply for lodgings in unions. Information to be given to Inspector Bouttell, Reepham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 19. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Mr. George Salisbury, Marsden- terrace, Blackburn : 1 gold Geneva stop Watch, engine- turned cases, cream- coloured dial, pink- coloured hands, seconds hand broken, ' William Russell, Geneva,' on dial. 1 gold plated Guard and Locket, the locket has a cross on one side, and two spaces for photographs on the other. 1 silver Geneva Watch, flowered silver dial, dark hands, No. ( supposed) 3471. 1 gold plated Albert Chain, curb pattern. 1 gold plated Albert Chain. 1 gold plated Locket, raised horse- shoe oil one side, de" d gold back, with spaces for two portraits. 1 black felt billycock Hat, 1 George Salisbury ' written inside lining, and ' Lome' inside crown. THOMAS BLACKBURN, who lodged at the house By during the night of the 3rd instant, aud i absconded in the BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 7 and 8 p. m. on tlie 16th instant, a dwelling- house in Ashton- under- Lyne was entered, supposed by means of skeleton keys, and stolen therein : twenty- three silver Tea Spoons, marked ' T. ;' a silver Teapot and Stand, teapot marked ' G.' and some other letter ; a silver Cream Jug ; a silver Cup or Goblet, engraved ' Presented to the Members of the Union Club, Ashton- under- Lyne, by Colonel Mellor, won by George Burrows ;' also a number of old gold and silver Coins. £ 1 reward will be paid upon the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable Dalgliesh, Town Hall, Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 19. During the night of the 13th instant, a house in the city of Hereford was broken and entered, and stolen therein : twelve silver Tea Spoons, six marked ' R. M. W.' in German text" and six marked 1M. W.' Information to be given to Head Constable Davis, city of Hereford.— Bow- st., April 19. Between 2 and 4- 30 p. m, on the 6th instant, the cottage • f William Benjamin, labourer, St. Mellons, Monmouthshire, was broken into, and a silver Geneva Watch, No. 21835, and a German silver Guard stolen therein. Suspicion is attached to a youth, 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, propor- tionate make, brown liair cut short, a scar across the nose and cheek; was discharged from the House of Correction, Swansea, 3rd October, 1870, under police supervision for 7 years ; dressed in black bowler hat, dark monkey jacket with velvet collar, and light trousers; usual employment, cleaning locomotives at railway engine sheds. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk ; to Superin- tendent Mcintosh, Pontypool; or to Inspector Sheppard, County Constabulary, Newport, Monmouthshire. — Bow- st., April 17. Baylis House, the residence of Mr. William Butt, situate at the parish of Stoke Poges, Bucks, was broken and entered, during the night of the 11th instant, and stolen therein : a rosewood Workbox, brass bound and inlaid, fitted with blue satin ; a small painted Workbox ; a small Painting, in heavy o- ilt frame ; several small Ornaments ; two Table Covers, one crimson and black cloth, the other green and black ; and two jet Bracelets. £ 15 15s. reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the offender or offenders, viz.: £ 10 10s. by the Salt Hill Association for the Prosecution of Felons, and £ 5 5s. by Mr. Butt. Information to be given to Super- intendent Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Sutton, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 14. make, thin face, light brown hair, slight moustache, no whiskers, grey eyes, nose slightly crooked, scar over left eyebrow, scar on right thumb, and mark under right breast; dressed in a suit of black cloth clothes and the stolen billycock hat; is a native of Colne, Lancashire, a draper, and well educated ; in 1867 he was tried at Liverpool Assizes for stealing money at Wigan, and sentenced to 18 months at Kirkdale Gaol. Information to be given to Chief Constable Potts, Town Hall, Blackburn, Lancashire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, April 19. Absconded from the parish of Neenton, on the 13tli instant, charged with larceny : JAMES EVANS, a farm labourer, about 48 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, and large whiskers ; dressed in dirty drab open smock frock, old moleskin waistcoat, with sleeves, cotton cord trousers, and strong lace- up boots ; he has worked at coal wharves in the neighbourhood of Birmingham, where he is supposed to have made for. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivins, County Constabulary Office, Bridgnorth, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, April 19. Absconded on the 6tli instant, charged on a warrant with embezzlement : CHARLES STEPHEN EASTLAND, late of No. 1, Summerfield- road, Blackstock- lane, Finsbury Park, late cashier to the Star Life Assurance Society, No. 48, Moor- gate- street, about 39 or 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, black hair, beard, whiskers, and moustache, sallow complexion, hair brushed off the forehead, stout build, broad shoulders, walks very upright; generally dressed in dark clothes, and high black hat, and is of gentlemanly appearance. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, No. 26, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, April 19. Stolen from a public- house at Ketley, on the 15th inst. a piece of grey Clotli, 3 yards long ; a piece of printed Cloth, with red and yellow spots on it, 3 yards long ; a piece of white and brown tweed Cloth, about 2-| yards long. By a man, a collier, about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, light hair, no whiskers, sallow complexion, cross- eyed, and one leg a little shorter than the other. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop. — Bow- street, April 17. Stolen from a blacksmith's shop at Horton, in the parish of Wem, on the 11th instant, a hedge Hook and a leather Apron, the property of Thomas Nevitt: by a journeyman blacksmith, a native of Limal, Salop, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stiff build, brown hair, and light complexion. His wife resides at Neston, Cheshire, where it is supposed he may be found. Information to be given to Sergeant Hey ward, Wem, Shropshire.— Bow- street, April 17. 14th ultimo, stealing and taking with him a brown moleskin Waistcoat with sleeves, a ditto Yest, and a pair of corduroy Trousers, the property of the Directors, all marked ' O. H. I.' - he is 66 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, ruddy com- plexion, pockmarked, long grey hair, and grey eyes ; dressed in the stolen clothes, blillycock hat, and strong lace- up boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Gough, or to Sergeant Thomas, Oswestry, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 17. Stolen from the dwelling- house of William Seaton, labourer, Billesdon, Leicestershire, on the 8th instant: an unbleached calico Shirt, lined to the waist-, one plait down front, large white buttons, no back stitching, nearly new, a pair of grey worstead Stockings, a small bit of white at the top, which is ribbed ; 1 lb. of coarse Sugar ; and a quantity of Bread and Cheese. By a lodger, who gave the name of THOMAS ALDRIDGE, a tramping brick- yard labourer, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, grey eyes, round features, ruddy complexion, said he was a native of Henley, Staffordshire ; dressed in fustian jacket, white duck slop, cord ot- blue cloth Trousers, stiff black billy hat, and good clog hoots. Information to be given to Inspector Rowlett, East Norton, Leicestershire, who holds a warrant for hia apprehension.— Bow- street, April 14. Absconded from Marlesford, Suffolk, about the 26th ultimo, charged with larceny : GEORGE CATTERMOOLE, a labourer, 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, walks erect, has been in the Army, dark brown hair, no whiskers, but a moustache, and dark complexion ; dressed in a black high crown hat., brown cloth frock coat and trousers, and has a blue overcoat with him; was seen in Kesgrave, Suffolk, on. the 2nd instant, where he left a bundle of clothing. Infor- mation to be gvien to Inspector Durrant, WicKham Market, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his app '. hens'. oii.— Bovi street, April 14. Stolen by a man from a house in Windsor, at which he had lodged four or five nights previously, on the 11th instant: a gold Geneva Watch, having tlie word ' Chitty' scratched inside back of case, a lady's silver snake Chain, plated with gold, attached ; also a silver hunting Watch, marked ' Rovas, London,' which was sold at Maidenhead, and a brass Chain attached. The man is about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, about 33 or 34 years of age, rather long face, large hands and feet, long dark whiskers, shaved chin, long dark liair, and high forehead; dressed in black jacket, waistcoat, and trousers, black alpaca overcoat, deerstalker hat, and side- spring hoots. Information to be given to Superintendent Hayes, Windsor, Berks.— Bow- street, April 14. Stolen from the White Lion inn, at St. Mary's, in Ely, on the 12th instant, hy a youth, who slept there the previous night, the property of Henry Brown, a lodger : a white cambric pocket Handkerchief, marked 1 H. Brown, 1870,' with ink ; an orange- coloured silk ditto, marked ' H. B.' with white silk ; and a pair of slate- coloured kid Gloves. The youth is about 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, round face, brown liair, and grey eyes ; dressed in a suit of dark clothes, and is respectable looking. He stated that he had been to Outwell, Isle of Ely, to see his friends. Information to be given to Superintendent Lantsbnry, Ely, Cambs.— Bow- street, April 14 Absconded on the 4th instant, from Gloucester, charged with embezzling various sums of Money of his employer, Mr. Robert Stuart: WILLIAM LLOYD, a baker's assistant, a native of Tetbury, Gloucestershire, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hair, clean face, sallow com- plexion, and very sickly appearance; dressed in a hard round aowler hat, black jacket and vest, and spring- side boots. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, April 12. Absconded from Whittlesey, at 7- 30 a. m. on the 11th instant : WILLIAM BEARD, of Nottingham, a tramping tailor, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair and moustache, thin face, and bas the appearance of a foreigner; dressed in green alpine hat, blue satin necktie, blue cloth coat, bound with braid, and lined with grey cloth, and new dark plaid trousers ; he is charged with stealing the said blue Necktie, from William Gale. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 12. Stolen from a public- house in the city of Chester, on the 8th instant: about £ 6 ; a silver Geneva Watch, with a little pink enamel on the outer case ; a lady's small gold Chain, round links ; and an albert Chain, with large links. By a man, who had been staying there, about 30 years of age, middle height, well made, no whiskers, brown moustache, and hair thin on top of head ; he was dressed in a mixed brown suit, and lace- up boots. He said he was a landscape gardener, and was known at the Moss Rose running grounds, Macclesfield. Information to be given to the Chief Con- stable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, April 12. Description of DAVID JONES, a pavior, late an inmate of the Oswestry House of Industry, who absconded on the FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). A warrant lias been. issued for the apprehension of THOMAS PASSIMORE, alias PAIR, charged with bigamy at Floore in November, 1870 : he is a native of France, but has been in England for the last 13 years, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown hair, pale complexion, jaw- bone broken, which causes the teeth to overlap ; dressed in dark coat, light trousers, and billycock hat; he is a shoemaker and plasterer, and has been employed by bootmakers in High- street, Epsom, in 1868, at Berkhampstead in 1869, at North- ampton in 1870, at Surbiton, Surrey, and Long Ditton, Kingston- on- Thames in 1871, and he is supposed to be now employed at one of those places. Information to be given to Superintendent Bailie, Northamptonshire Constabu- lary, Weedon.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of THOMAS TOMLINSON, charged with assaulting Mary Bourne at Alsager, on the 2nd instant, with intent to commit a rape : about 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, small dark beard, slender make; dressed in a dark hairy coat, black billycock hat, and woollen cord trousers. Information to be given to Sergeant Dale, Constabulary Station, Hall Green, Lawton, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for bis apprehension.— Bow- street, April 14. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Obtained by false pretences from the Saracen's Head' Ashford, on the 14th instant, a red- cream- coloured Gelding' 12 years old, 15 hands 2 or 3 inches high, high hip- bones' near hind and near fore feet white, has an old wound on near Side, between shoulder and saddle, caused by falling on a spike; a plum- coloured Dog- cart, picked out with white, • brown cushions; and a set of silver- mounted Harness, with breeching. By a man about 25 years of age ( looks much younger), 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, no whiskers, light hair, round face, several front teeth recently knocked out, and lips cut and strapped; dressed as a stableman, in dark trousers and vest, black jacket, hard felt hat, and new spring- side boots. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Noakes, Kent Constabulary, Ashford.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM SANSOME, charged with obtaining £ 4, from Sir Henry St John Halford, Bart., at Wistow Hall, Leicestershire, on the ^ 7th ultimo, by false pretences : about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, hair, and moustache, y^ hiskers shaved off at sides, slightly made, and erect ; dressed in a dark pea jacket, dark striped trousers, elastic- side boots, fancy necktie, black hard billycock hat, with small light feather in the band ; carried a mahogany polished walking stick, and had a brown overcoat with him. Information to be given to Superintendent Burdett, Aylestone, near Leicester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension, or at the County Constabulary Office, Leicester.— Bow- street, April 12. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS. Description of JOHN BROWN, who states that he was born in Manchester, but left there two months ago, who is committed for trial at the ensuing quarter sessions at Mold for stealing a Gander : 30 years of age, 5 feet 8J- inches high, small scar below right temple, ' B. C.' in Indian ink on right side ( says he waa discharged from the Royal Artillery),. brown hair, no whiskers, full face, fresh complexion, and has the appearance of a travelling tinker. Information to be given to Superintendent Adams, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bow- street, April 19. A man representing himself to be the agent of a large bacon and cheese foctor, is remanded at Honiton, Devon, till the 21st instant, on two charges of felony : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout build, large head, large bushy eyebrows, hair falling off the top of head, bushy sandy whiskers, sallow complexion; dressed in a grey witney cloth double- breasted over- coat, much worn, drab ribbed cloth trousers, soft felt black hat, black and ret cravat, and lace- up boots ; he says he is a quaker, and a native of Liver- pool. Information to be given to Superintendent Dore, Devon Constabulary, Honiton.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of two men remanded till the 22nd instant, charged with larceny : ROBERT LANCASHIRE, a native of Middleton, near Manchester, silk weaver, 54 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, grey whiskers and moustache, full beard, blue eyes, grey hair, and proportionate figure; dressed in black cloth frock coat, grey tweed vest and trousers, and black billycock hat. And JAMES DINGWALL, a native of Glasgow, bill- poster, 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, swarthy complexion, high cheek bones, grey eyes, dark brown hair, whiskers have been recently shaved off, and proportionate figure; dressed in brown cloth jacket and vest, grey tweed trousers, and grey woollen cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Bird, Constabulary Office, Kendal, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, April 19. Absconded from St. Francis Home Industry School, Shefford, Bedfordshire, on the 15th instant: JAMES FUNNIGAN, 15 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, slight figure, fair complexion, light hair and eyes ; dressed in dark cord trousers, leather belt with large brown buckle, an old overcoat, and side- spring boots ; also took a strong pair of new lace- up boots, a low oval hat, and a black leather bag, with a strap. JOHN HOPKINS, 10 years of age, 4 feet 3^ inches high, rather stout figure, fair complexion, dark brown hair, and blue eyes; dressed in dark cord trousers, leather belt, round black jacket, lined with black and blue plaid, round black cap, with peak, and wears a blue guernsey under his jacket. All expenses and a reward of £ 1 will be paid on the appre- hension of the boys. Information to be given to Sergeant Bransom, Shefford, Beds.— Bow- street, April 19. Missing from her home, No. 4, Dingle- grove, Eccles New- road, Weaste, Salford, since the 9th February last : ELIZA ANN HAWORTH, 48 years of age, 5 feet high, light blue eyes, dark brown hair, short and stoutly made, full and bloated face, short turn- up nose, one of her arms has been broken, on the forepart of same arm there is a small swelling or lump, and is very much addicted to drinking ; dressed in grey winsey dress, long grey cloak, black crape bonnet, and at the time she left home is believed to have had in her posses- sion about £ 2, a gold lever watch, No. 1484, with gold dial, which is scratched down the centre; also a Maltese cross, silver medal, bearing the following inscription—' D. A. R. C., Maiden 4- Oared Race, won by J. P. Haworth'; also another Maltese cross, silver medal, won at Bury, in a boat race. It is suspected that some ill has befallen her. Infor- mation to be given at the Detective Department, Town Hall, Salford.— Bow- street, April 19. Description of licence- holders who have failed to report themselves at a Metropolitan Police Station, as required by the Penal Servitude Act, 1864: JOHN GORDON, No. 209, 27 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, bazel eyes, scars on left jaw and right arm, mole left breast; was sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude at Central Criminal Court for burglary and larceny, his sentence will expire 26th February, 1872. JAMES BERRETT, No. 6542, 27 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, light hazel eyes ; was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude at Central Criminal Court for larceny, his sentence will expire 16th December, 1871. These licence- holders cannot be found at the addresses given by them, and they are to be apprehended by any constable at any time prior to date of expiration of sentence, and the fact reported immediately to the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, London, S. W.— Metropolitan Police, April 19. Committed to Aylesbury Gaol for one month's hard labour, as a rogue and vagabond, on the 17th instant, from Newport Pagnell, Bucks : CHARLES JAMES WILSON ( supposed fictitious), represents himself to be a schoolmaster out of employment, 33 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, light brown hair, whiskers inclined to be sandy, circular cut over left eyebrow, and blind of right eye; dressed in dark brown tweed coat, dark cloth ribbed trousers, tweed vest, white shirt, black and white plaid scarf, old buttoned boots, brown cloth gloves, soft deerstalker hat, and without stockings. He has been about the country obtaining charitable contribu- tions from clergymen, schoolmasters, schoolmistresses, and others, by false pretences. Information to be given to Super- intendent Hedley, Fenny Stratford, Bucks.— Bow- st., April 19. On the morning of the 13th instant, the body of a newly- born female child was found, in a nude state, by the side of the River Nen, against Peterborough- bridge. And a woman, who states that her name is MARY ANN THOMPSON, wife of the above man, 29 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes, oval face, states she belongs to Dublin, and that her father is a brewer there ; she has a blue mark on right forearm, and two moles on same arm near wrist : dressed in a black crape bonnet with bugle trimmings, black cloth jacket trimmed with seal skin, black coburg dress with flounce at bottom, bows of same material up the front of skiit, maroon coburg petticoat with flounce, blue scarf which forms a stomacher, sailor collar, black brooch, with ear- drops to match.
