The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. Nottcc.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BTTRNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War. During the night of the 2nd instant, the Abbey National School, St. Alban's, was broken and entered, and 24s. in Coppers, Is. in Silver, a 4d. Piece, a 3d. Piece, and a small Key, stolen therein. Information to be given to Head Con- stable Pike, St. Alban's, Herts.— Bow- street, April 5. ROBBERY AID LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person at Weedon Railway Station, on the 30th ultimo : a gold Watch, white face, plain back, very much worn, of a peculiar flat construction, ' E. Howe' scratched on the inside of ease. Information to be given to Superintendent Bailie, Weedon, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, April 5. Stolen from the person of. a gentleman, on the highway at Sharpies, near Bolton, about 8T5 p. m. on the 31st ultimo : a gold hunting Watch, 18- carat gold, cream- coloured dial, marked ' Half Chronometer,' No. 2270,' maker Lyon, Man- chester ; had attached a strong Albert Chain, each link marked as being 18- carat gold ; a small gold Key, with stone on swivel in centre, colours dark green and light pink; a green malachite Key, in the Ijirm of a pistol with horseshoe at the end ; a small gold Compass; a spade ace Guinea and a half ditto ; a plain gold Locket, with monogram ' IHS' in blue enamel letters ; and a gold 5- franc Piece. Information to be given at the Superintendent's Office, Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, April 3. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 5th instant, the residence of Miss. Nilsons, at St. Nicholas, Guildford, was broken into, and the following silver articles stolen therein : twelve tea Spoons ; eight salt Spoons ; one mustard Spoon ; a pair of sugar Tongs ; a cheese Knife ; twelve dessert Forks ; eleven small dessert Forks ; four Salt Cellers ; a Waiter; a Sar- dinian gold Coin ; and an opera Glass, crest— a bursting shell and an arrow head. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guildford, Bow- street, April 10. Between 10 p. m. on the 8th and 6 a. m. on the 9tli inst., the house of Mr. Francis Bury, in the parish of Langley Marsh, Bucks, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver- gilt oblong Snuff- box, embossed raised edge, crest— a wheatsheaf and a hand and leg in armour, gilt partly worn off; a silver- gilt repeater Watch, open face, enamelled dial, plain black figures, short steel Chain and Key attached ; a white metal Watch, old- fashioned, open face, white dial, a short steel Chain with gold Key attached ; a gold Seal, with red cornelian stone, an old- fashioned gold Key, crest- a stag's head or griffin, both attached to a gold ring ; a glass mustard Pot, with plain silver top ; two Tops of pepper castors, silver, from cruet stand; two silver mustard Spoons, plain ; a small silver Sugar Spoon, plain ; . a silver clasp fruit Knife; two pairs of small and one pair of large Scissors ; two white calico Shirts, plain fronts, recently washed but not ironed ; three calico Sheets, marked ' Bury, servant,' in black ink ; a red and white check Tablecover ; a Tablecloth, marked ' Bury' in in ink ; a pair of men's long cotton Drawers, marked ' Bury' in ink ; several chamber Towels, marked ' Bury ' in ink ; a loin of fresh Pork, weighing 8 lbs. : about 3 lbs, of Bacon ; a small piece of cooked loin of Mutton ; a small piece of boiled Mutton ; ^- lb. of Butter ; and a quantity of Tea. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Slough, or to Inspector Sutton, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, April 10. During the morning of the 7th instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Lewis, in the parish of Hartlebury, was broken and entered, and stole therein : three £ 5 Notes, two of the Worcester Old Bank ; a silver Watch, gilt figures, and glass broken ; a gold Locket, with the name ' Merrick' engraved upon it, containing some grey hair, gold Chain attached ; and an enamelled Brooch, with a dove engraved ou it. Information to be given to Superintendent Raby, Police Office, Great Witley, or to Sergeant Ganderton, Police Office, Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, April 10. During the night of the lst instant, the house of Mr. J. B. Read, of Upper Henwick, in the city of Worcester, was broken and entered, and a quantity of Port Wine in bottles, a leg of Mutton, and other articles were stolen. A HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed stolen, the property of John Styles and Henry Stevens, a spotted roan barren Heifer, horns broken off, but are growing again, short- horn breed, 3 years old. Also a small black Welsh Heifer, about 2 years old. They were last seen on the 28th ultimo, near the Talbot Inn, Stapleford Tawney, on the London road. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen from a field at Ketley, near Wellington, Salop, during the night of the 7th instant, a chesnut Mare Pony aged, 13 hands 2 inches high, a white spot on near side of the back, one near hind fetlock white, and a cut under the belly, the property of Charles Bennett. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Richardson, Wellington, or to Ser- geant Austin, St. George's; Salop.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen from a field in the parish of Kilsby, Northampton- shire, the property of Mr. Thomas H. Cowley, between the 25th and 29th ultimo : 14 long- wool Teg Sheep, branded with the letters T. H. C., with a nick cut out of the bottom and top of the ear. The he Tegs are cut on the right and the she Tegs on the left ear. £ 10 reward will be given on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Thos. H. Cowley, Kilshy, or to Superintendent Bailie, Weedon, Northamptonshire. —. Bow- street, April 5. Stolen during the night of the 2nd instant, from a stable the property of William Rayner, bricklayer, Stanford Rivers, Essex : a dark brown mare Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands high, long mane and tail, near hind foot white, with very small head ; also at the same time and place a light Cart, painted light green; and a set of brass mounted Harness, nearly new, except the bridle and crupper. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Police Station, Chipping Ongar, Essex. — Bow- street, April 5. Stolen on the night of the 31st ultimo, a black mare Pony, aged, 12 hands high, branded on the off side of neck with the letters ' G. R.', and tail cut short, the property of Mr. James S. Bourn, Stounton Hall, Kinver, near Stour- bridge, Staffordshire. Information to be given te Sergeant Baldwin, Police Station, Kinver, near Stourbridge, Stafford- shire.— Bm- street, April 5. Stolen on the night of the 28th ultimo, from a barn in the parish of Fawler, two fat ewe teg Sheep, half- bred, shorn, and marked ' J. G.' on the hip with pitch, the property of John Giilett. Information to be given to Police Constable Baker, Charlbury, or to Superintendent Lakin, Chipping Norton, Oxon.— Bow- street, April 3. 8th instant: about £ 6; a silver Geneva Watch, with a little pink enamel on the outer case ; a lady's small gold Chain, round links; and an albert Chain, with large links. By a man, who had been staying there, about 30 years of age, middle height, well made, no whiskers, brown moustache, and hair thin on top of head ; he was dressed in a mixed brown suit, and lace- up boots. He said he was a landscape gardener, and was known at the Moss Rose running grounds, Macclesfield. Information to be given to the Chief Con- stable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, April 12. Absconded on the 25th ultimo, from Smallthorn, Stafford- shire, charged on a warrant with stealing a quantity of Wearing Apparel ( recovered), the property of William Briscoe : JOHN JONES, an Irishman, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, stoutly built, dark complexion and eyes, black hair, and no whiskers ; dressed in dark blue pilot jacket, very short, moleskin trousers and vest, and old blucher boots ; he is a collier. Information to be given to Superintendent Povey, Burslem, or to Sergeant Beirne, Smallthorn, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 10. Further information respecting SAMUEL JONES, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 5th instant, charged with stealing £ 30, the monies of the Braintree Order of Foresters : his wife has returned to Shiffnal, but he is sup- posed to be still in England, and to be working at his trade in the county of Stafford, or with a relative in or near Glasgow. Information to be given to Sergeant Cox, County Constabulary Office, Shiffnal, Shropshire.— Bow- street, AprillO. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of THOMAS HARTGROVE, who has absconded, charged with stealing five trusses of Hay, the property of W. Kynaston, Esq., of Stanford Rivers, on the 28th ultimo : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, very little whiskers, rather high cheekbones, walks rather - wuvanly, ami - apw- aran. ee of g. oostfcr- monger; dressed in a brown plush cap, OWstertield coat, much worn, blue guernsey, cord trousers, and lace- up boots; he frequents Shoreditch and Spitalfields Markets. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Epping, or to Inspector Robinson, Chipping Ongar, Essex.— Bow- street, April 10. Supposed stolen during the night of the 31st ultimo, from a field at Theydon Hall, in the parish of Theydon Bois, the property of Mr. Robert Pallett, a bay Cob, aged, about 12 hands high, short thick mane and tail, small scar on bend of near thigh, and nearly blind of the off eye. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Police Station, Epping, Essex.— Bow- street, April 3. Stolen from Ashdown Forest, in the parish of Maresfleld, Sussex, on the 29th ultimo, the property of John Cheal, a brown mare Pony, about 2 years old, 12 hands high, broom tail, has some hair clipped off under mane, has been worked, and is shod. Information to be given to Superintendent Peerless, Uckfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.- - • Bow- street, April 3. LARCENY AIB EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on the 4th instant, from Gloucester, charged with embezzling various sums of Money of his employer, Mr. Robert Stuart: WILLIAM LLOYD, a baker's assistant, a native of Tetbury, Gloucestershire, 24 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, light brown hair, clean face, sallow com- plexion, and very sickly appearance; dressed in a hard round bowler hat, black jacket and vest, and spring- side boots. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 12. Absconded from Whittlesey, at 7' 30 a. m. on the llth instant : WILLIAM BEARD, of Nottingham, a tramping tailor, about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, black hair and moustache, thin face, and has the appearance of a foreigner ; dressed in green alpine hat, blue satin necktie, blue cloth coat, bound with braid, and lined with grey cloth, and new dark plaid trousers ; he is charged with stealing the said blue Necktie, from William Gale. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 12. Stolen from a public- house in the city of Chester, on the Description of WILLIAM BENNETT, alias BROWN, a tailor, but who has lately hawked and sold Cloth at fairs and markets, and sometimes sells rat- killing powders, charged with stealing a light drab morning Coat, single- breasted, with pockets and flaps in the waist, ivory buttons ; and a pair of light drab Trousers, fly fronts ; the property of C. J. Stebbings, at Oundle, on the 31st ultimo. He is 52 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, very round shouldered and stoops, swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, and dark eyes ; dressed in a single- breasted oxford mixed melton coat, with pockets and flaps in the waist, single- breasted vest of same material, and black mixed tweed trousers. Information to be given to Superintendent Noble, or to Inspector Evans, Oundle, Northampton, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen from the house of Mr. Guy Fowkes, Granby- street, Leicester, on the 20th ultimo : a gold Watch, with gold dial, and ' E. Fowke,' engraved on back ; a gold oval Locket, with chased backs, and has one glass out; a lady's gold Ring, set with five turquoises ; and part of a gold Pencilcase with ring attached. By a man named KIRBY, 24 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, proportionate make, fair complexion, light frizzly hair, no whiskers or moustache ; shabbily dressed in a blue pea jacket, dark mixture trousers with black stripe down sides, old silk hat, red necktie, and old elastic- side boots. He was accompanied by a woman, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and complexion, large grey eyes, and rather prominent teeth ; dressed in a high French hat, blue jacket with dark fur round the bottom and sleeves, and dark- coloured dress with tunic ; is supposed to be a native of Derby, where she has been recently residing. £ 2 reward will be paid on the apprehension and conviction of the above- named man. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Leicester.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen on the 4th instant, at Sunderland, by a woman, who states that her name is MARGARET ROWE, and that she belongs to Silver- street, Durham, and was an attendant at Sedgefield Aslylum ; about 21 years of age, about 5 feet 1 inch high, very dark brown hair, hangs down behind, small dark sunken eyes, low forehead, and rather stout face ; dressed in a black velvet hat, black cloth jacket, and black dress : a linen Chemise, with a mark round the sleeves, and laps and strings ; a cotton ditto, not finished ; a pair of lady's cotton Drawers, five tucks round the bottom, not quite finished; a pair of green kid Gloves, a white cotton Handkerchief, a small black lace Shawl ; a black jet Chain, a small gold Locket attached ( portrait of a lady inside) ; a black moire antique Dress, black silk velvet waist, black silk fringe round the sleeves, gilt buttons up the front of waist; and a brown silk Umbrella. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sun- derland, Durham.— Bow- street, April 10. Stolen about 2' 30 p. m. on the 5th instant, from a grocer's shop at Pendleton, in the borough of Salford : a Chubb's cash Box, containing two £ 10 Bank of England Notes, one dated Manchester, January 29th, 1870, and numbered U— 13, 37097 or 37098 ; a £ 5 Bank of England Note ; about £ 17 in Gold ; about 14s. in threepenny Pieces ; a Victoria Half Sovereign, with the initials ' R. B.' pricked on it, as if with a sprig- bit; a 7s. gold Coin; a Half- farthing ; and a few very old Sixpences, amounting altogether to about £ 43. By two men, one about 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark moustache ; dressed well, in blue pilot Overcoat, and black stiff billycock hat, wore very light coloured kid gloves ; he was seated in a gig, in which was a black horse, occupying the at tention of the shopkeeper at the side door by pretending to give him an order, whilst the other man, about 28. years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark whiskers, and very well dressed, went into the shop and took the box and contents. £ 10 reward will be paid on conviction of the offenders and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Chief Constable Torrens, Town Hall, Salford, Manchester.— Bow- street, April 10. Absconded on the 28th ultimo, from Castleford, charged with embezzling £ 17 10s. and other monies, the property of the Wheldale Coal Company, his masters, HENRY SYLVESTER, clerk : he is 25 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, slight whiskers and moustache ( supposed shaved off), slender build, and leans a little forward in the shoulders; dressed in a black cloth suit, and has a respectable appearance. He resided in Castleford, and is well known at Newcastle- upon- Tyne, Rochdale, and other places. It is supposed he is making his way for America. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Court House, Pontefract, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, April 5. Absconded on the 30th instant, stealing £ 166, the monies of his employers, Messrs. Morgan, Brothers, merchants: JOSIAH RICHMOND ANDERSON, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slender build, fair hair and complexion, no whiskers, slight imperial, and light moustache; dressed in light tweed trousers, stripe down the sides, short cut- away eoat, black, dark blue overcoat, and black hat, a clerk. £ 50 reward is offered for his apprehension and conviction. Infor- mation to he given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, April 5. Absconded between 10- 30 p. m. 26th and 6- 30 a. m. on the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing from Loanda House, Alexandra- road, Gipsy- hill, £ 7 Us. in Gold and Silver; a double- case silver lever Watch, jewelled, No. 50491, ' S. C.' on front, dent on outer case : a page, 15 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, projecting teeth, and has a slight impediment in speech ; dressed in black cloth trousers, mixture vest, striped gingham jacket, rough blue overcoat, velvet collar, black cap, plaid woollen shirt, and lace- up boots; friends reside at Finchley.— Metro- politan Police, P Division, April 5. Absconded on the 9th ultimo, charged with embezzling £ 142 lis. 8d., proceeds of a cheque on the Limehouse Branch of the London and County Bank, drawn by the Overseers of the parish of St. Ann, Limehouse : a vestry clerk, 48 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair and eyes, bad teeth, generally wears spectacles, and droops in left shoulder. He is accompanied by his wife, 45 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout, showy looking, fresh colour ; and his daughter, 13 years of age. Supposed to be at Little Hampton or Great Yarmouth.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, April 5. Stolen on the moming of tl. v lKli. li nit., from the house — - • — ... charged with larceny: a man, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark brown hair, and no whiskers ; dressed in black alpine hat, long plush sleeved vest, colours red, white, and blue, dark plaid trousers ; has a suit of brown cloth with him. Information to be given to Inspector Durrant, Wick- ham Market, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehen- sion.- Bow- street, March 31. Charged on a sheriff's warrant with stealing three Harmoniums, which he had out on hire from music sellers in Glasgow : D. R. McLATCHIE, a teacher of music, lately residing in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, from which place he absconded on the 17th instant, and is supposed to have gone to Ireland, where probably he will call upon music sellers, asking their assistance in procuring him a situation, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slender made, dark eyes, whiskers small, if any, generally clean shaved, bald, walks erect, and generally carries a small walking stick; supposed to be dressed in a blue shooting coat, and brown topcoat. Information to be given to Superintendent Brown, Detective Department, Glasgow.— Bow- street, March 31. Absconded from Lyd St. Giles, Isle of Ely, on the 10th instant, charged with stealing a grey cloth Overcoat, double- breasted, worn on one sleeve near the wrist, one outside breast pocket, one pocket on each side, and has lost two buttons in front : JOHN HARVEY, a tramping labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown hair, small dark whiskers, lost forefinger of right hand, has been in the Army, was discharged for bad conduct, and is branded with the letter ' D.;' dressed in the stolen coat, red and black sleeved plush vest, cotton cord trousers, and black cloth cap. Has a cousin employed at King's Cross Station, and stated when he left that he was going to him, but will probably get work in the Fens. Information to be given to Superintendent Stocking, Elm- road, Wisbeach, Isle of Ely, who holds warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 31. 24 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, rather small moustache, " is about thick set, shaves under the chin, which appears rather dark, broad and prominent forehead, and large eyebrows. He is supposed to be the same man charged with a similar offence at Winchester, and described in the Police Gazette of the 27th instant, under the name of CHAS. LEE MONTAGUE. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Tunbridge Wells, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, March 31. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described). Description of J. W. SAUNDERS, a coachbuilder's blacksmith, charged with having committed an indecent assault on a girl nine years of age, at Newport, Salop : he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, slender make, pale thin face, no whiskers, tuft of fair hair on chin, and brown hair; dressed in black clothes, and top hat ( crape band). Supposed that his wife is living in Sheffield. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- si., MarcTi 31. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM SANSOME, charged with obtaining £ 4, from Sir Henry St. John Halford, Bart., at Wistow Hall, Leicestershire, on the 27th ultimo, by false pretences : about 25 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, light complexion, hair, and moustache, whiskers shaved off at sides, slightly made, and erect; dressed dark pea jacket, dark striped trousers, elastic- side boots, " " ' ' ' 1 1 ' X ,1 fancy necktie," black hard biilycock hat, with small light " 2! ss." ozL°< J « l « n " Rrad'lpv near Bilston ! feather in the band; carried a mahogany polished walking of George j^ iwell. By a lodger, a collier, who has absconded: 29 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, very thin make, dark hair and whiskers, has a number of boils on neck, and has lost a joint of one of his fingers; dressed in old black cloth jacket, torn at elbows, cord trousers, and old billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent McCrea, Bilston, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, April 3. He may be found with some gipsies, who travel in Suffolk and Norfolk. In February, 1851, burglary, 10 years'transportation in June, 1853, burglary, 10 years' transportation ; in Decem- ber, 1857, stealing a horse, 3 years' penal servitude ; in September, 1858, escaped from Cork Prison, and retaken in Edinburgh, in November, 1860 ; in August, 1861, discharged on licence ; in August, 1864, fraud, 5 years' penal servitude ; and in March, 1870, she was committed for trial from Altrincham, Cheshire, for felony, and acquitted. Description of a man who tendered a fictitious Cheque for £ 15 on Messrs. Cox and Co., in payment of an hotel bill, at Maidstone, on the 29th ultimo. He is 20 or 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, moderately stout, of gentlemanly appearance, and will probably be found at an hotel; dressed daily in black, with white neckcloth before dinner. He is in the habit of writing letters to persons of distinction, which he afterwards exposed to the servants. He gave the name of R. SPENCER CHURCHILL, 3c, Albany, Piccadilly, which has been ascer- tained to be false. He is generally dressed in a grey suit before dining, and had with him a portmanteau travelling rug, hat box, and a small bag, which he may leave at the railway station of the town where he arrives. Left Maidstone by 10T5 train on the morning of the 29th ultimo. He repre- sents that he is reading for the law, and that he is connected with many of the leading aristocratic families residing in England. Description of a tramping nawy, committed on the 6th instant to Salop Gaol for 14 days for vagrancy, HENRY JONES, alias HENRY RINGALLMAN, a native of Somersetshire, 48 years of age, 5 feet 5J inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, oval face, cut on left thumb, pockmarked, and is rather deaf. In his possession were found the following pawn tickets, viz. :— June 3rd, 1870, two Singlets, 6s. 9d., at William F.
