POLICE CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in eases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. GAZETTE Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to ME. C. *#* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, ail betters addressed to the Editor must l » e f » r « * paid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MUKSEE AMD MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded, charged with seriously assaulting the now deceased Robert Williamson, near Bellsquarry, between the 11th and 12th instant: THOMAS HALEY, miner, about 30 years of age, 5. feet 10 inches high, brown hair and whiskers, sharp nose, hafeel eyes, walks very erect; dressed in a black cloth shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and black cloth cap ; is a native of Clare, Ireland, has a relative residing at Liverpool, and generally goes under the name of LANCA- SHIRE TOM. Information to be given to the Procurator- Fiscal, Sheriff Court Buildings, or to the Chief Constable of the county, County Rooms, Edinburgh, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 17. Further information respecting THOMAS GAHAGHAN, charged with manslaughter in the city of Coventry, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th ultimo : he has been traced to No. 23, Chapel- street, Birmingham, and left there on the 14th ultimo, in company with a man, a wireworker, and a woman, with whom he is supposed to be travelling with fire- guards, toasting forks, and umbrellas, and attending fairs and races. Gahaghan is 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy hair, freckled face, stout build, bad appearance, and is an Irishman; is known in most of the towns in the midland counties, but has resided principally in Coventry, and is a member of the Warwickshire Militia. The other man is a native of Dudley, Worcestershire, but has not resided there for the past three or four years, 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion, and small dark moustache. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Norris, City Police Office, Coventry.— Bow- street, March 15. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen on the 23rd instant, from a gentleman, at Warwick Races : a gold Watch, with white face, and ' B. Leigh Smith, from his mother,' on the inside of case. £ 10 reward will be paid on the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender. Also stolen, a gold stop Watch, centre seconds, with a bit chipped out of the sunk part of the face. Information to be given to Head Constable Hickling, Warwick.— Bow- street, Ma> ch 24. Stolen from the person of three ladies at Holy Trinity Church, Knaresbrough, on the 16th instant, at a confirmation service, held by the Lord Bishop of Ripon : a brown leather Purse, with steel rim, containing 2s. or 3s. ; a brown leather Purse, with steel rim, containing five Sovereigns, and two return Tickets, between Ripon and Knaresbrough ; a long brown silk Purse ( crochet), two small steel balls ou the ends, and two steel rings on the purse, containing one and half Sovereign, and about 6s. in Silver. Information to be given at the Superintendents Office, Knaresbrough.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen from the person of a lady, in St. Michael's Church, Malton, on the 14th instant, a green morocco leather Purse, with gilt clasp, containing about 18s. in Silver and a Cheque for £ 2, payable to the Hon. Mrs. Willoughby, on Messrs. Smith, Payne, and Smith, bankers, Lombard- street, London, not endorsed, signed by Mrs. Ernold Smith. Information to be given to Superintendent Metcalfe, North Riding Consta- bulary, Malton.— Bow- street, March 17. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Aylesbury Steeplechases on the 13th instant: a gold consular Watch white ( ivory tinted) dial, gold spade hands, English works, and horizontal escapement. Information to be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, Backs. — Bow- street, March 17. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 20th instant, a dwelling- house at Silsoe, Beds, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a black pilot double- breasted Jacket, with outside pockets, black bone buttons and black lining; a boy's cord Jacket, with old- fashioned metal buttons ; a common blue striped Shirt; about 2 yards of brown Sealskin ; and two small white- handled Pocket- knives ; all new. Supposed by two men, one about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair and complexion, and small dark moustache ; dressed in Hack billycock hat, dark cord vest and trousers. The other about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, and no whiskers ; dressed in light billycock hat, light coat, vest, and trousers. Information to be given to Superintendent James, Police Station, Ampthill, Beds.— — bow- street, March 24. Description of a boatman named GEORGE SALT, charged with office breaking, and stealing £ 20 therein, at Chester on the 4th instant : he is about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, small dark whiskers ; dressed in a blue monkey jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, and blue cloth cap with peak ; is a native of Burslem, and is well known in the potteries, on the river Weaver, and in the Welsh Canal District, was employed on one of the river Weaver boats up to about 10 days ago. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Chester.— Bow- street, Ma- ch 24. During the night of the 19th instant, the cottage of William Collins, at Woking, was broken into and stolen therein : a lady's gold neck Chain, about 18 or 20 inches long, fastens with a snap ; a gold Locket, with ' IT. W.' in centre, with a man's portrait; a silver butter Knife, with pearl handle ; a silver Fork, with ivory handle ; a pair of plated sugar tongs ; five large and six small plated dessert Forks ; and two plated table Spoons. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Barker, Surrey Constabulary, Guild- ford— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen from a dwelling- house iu Sunderland, by means of house breaking, between 6T5 and 8 p. m. on the 19th inst.: 1 lady's heavy gold Chain, star pattern. 1 gentleman's light gold Chain. 1 gentleman's gold albert Chain. 3 pairs of gold Ear- rings, two pairs long and one short. 1 large cameo Brooch, with three half moons on it. 1 gold square earned Brooch, with basin and three doves on it. 1 silver Scotch peeble Brooch, with a hole in the middle. 2 gold Brooches, one small, and the other large, each with a mauve stone in centre. 1 small gold Brooch, set with yellow stone in centre. 1 gold Locket, opens at tin- side, blue enamelled on one side, and gold- on the other. 1 lady's gold Ring, set with three stones. 1 lady's gold Ring, set with yellow stones in centre, chased round the rim. , 2 ladies' mourning Rings, one large, the other smaller, one has the name ' John Thompson,' engraved on the inside, the other ' H. or W. Eggleston. 1 lady's old- fashioned gold Ring, has ' Wilkinson' engraved thereon. 1 silver lancet Case, has ' Thos. Hopper' engraved on the top of the case, containing two lancets. 1 lady's gold Riug, set with three garnet stones. 1 lady's gold Ring, set with three rubies, and four small green stones. 4 silver table Spoons, two plain, and two marked ' H. E.' 1 gold Seal, has engraved on it ' Dinna Forget.' 1 gold Seal, shape of a heart; has imitation hair inside. 1 small gold watch Key. 1 leather needle Case, with piece of hair inside, has the following inscription on the inside of the case, ' To Vinnie, as a remembrance to her aunt Pegg. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stainsby, Sunderland.— Bow- street, March 22. Between the 13th and 18th instant, a dwelling- house at Balboughty, in- the parish of Scone, in the county of Perth, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : two gold Brooches, large size ; two gold Rings, having four green stones set in each ; two black silk Dresses ; a brown satin Dress ; a green tartan Dress, with a small stripe of red through it; a blue winsey Dress ; a brown winsey dress Piece ; a brown winsey Dress ; a black merino Dress; a white Plaid, with brown border; two black Plaids ; a dark brown woollen Plaid, with light border ; a red and black heavy tartan Shawl ; a white woollen tartan Shawl, with broad mixed green border; three white cotton Petticoats, two plain, one flowered round bottom ; two flannel Petticoats, one red, the other white ; a black velvet Jacket; a black silk Jacket; a black silk Tippet; two pairs of Scotch Blankets, with blue borders; a pair of white jean Stays, fasten behind; and a dark brown Parasol, with fringes and folding handle ; also three £ 1 Notes and five Sovereigns, the property of Catherine Menzies, laundrymaid, Balboughty. Information to be given to Chief Constable Gordon, Perth.— Bow- street, March 22. During the night of the 15th instant, the goods office of the Great Eastern Railway Station at Hertford was broken into, and 6s. 9d. in Silver, 2s. in Coppers, and some Postage and Receipt Stamps, were stolen therein. Supposed by a man about 26 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache; dressed in a dark sac coat, dark trousers, and round soft black felt hat with a band with white spots on it. Information to be given to Head Constable Jarrett, Borough Police, Hertford.— Bow- street, Mcurch 20. Further information respecting the burglary at Shur- dington, near Cheltenham, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 27th ultimo : two of the men described therein have been apprehended, and committed for trial, the other is known as CHARLES COOKE, alias SERPENT- IN- THE- GRASS, alias SERPENT CHARLEY, supposed to belong to Man- chester : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, proportionate make, long thin face, high cheek bones, has a sandy moustache, and a sandy tuft on chin, he has also something the matter with his front teeth, rather round shouldered, and has a genteel way of speaking, is quick and active, and a good runner; generally dressed respectable. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Police Office, Cheltenham.— Bow- street, March 15. Stolen by housebreaking at Lemonsley, in the city of Lichfield, between 11 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 12th instant: a gold lever Watch, gold dial, jewelled in four holes, maker Jas. Gilbert, Lichfield, No. 72165, ' H. B.' engraved on dome; an oval- shaped gold Brooch, containing hair, engraved on back ' Harriet Brassington, died, May 8th, 1854 ;' a gold memorial Ring, set with pearls, engraved ' Stephen Bras- sington, died, March 12th, 1859 ;' a gold finger Ring, con- taining hair; five silver table Spoon, with crest— a lion, holding an arrow ; twelve silver tea Spoons, marked ' F. Stolen by housebreaking between 10 p. m. the 11th, and 3' 30 a. m. on the 12th instant, from Stone House, West Hill, Wandsworth : 20 Forks, twelve large, eight small; 33 Spoons, eight table, fourteen dessert, seven tea, and four salt; two sauce. Ladles ; a batter Knife, all silver, and engraved ' C. E. Y.;' a tin cash Box, containing £ 35 in Bank Notes; some Gold ; and a door Key.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, March 15. Between 3 aud 9 p. m. on the 5th instant, some person or persons by means of a false key, entered the dwelling- house of O. Downes, Church- street North, Colchester, and stolen therein : six Sovereigns ; ten Shillings in Silver ; a lady's large size D. B. S. silver Geneva Watch, maker Benson, London, No'. 4936, a long gold guard Chain, with gold Locket, containing a photograph likeness on one side; two gold Keys, one a barrel key set round with blue stones, one of which was missing ; a large gold Brooch, with blood stone in centre ; and small Locket appended, with small stone to match ; ; Jso a smaller size Brooch ; and two lady's gold finger Rings, one of them set with fine blue stones. HORSli AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a field at Doverige, on the 11th instant : a dark brown horse Pony, 4 years old, 12 hands high, and in good condition, the property of Mr. Wm. Minors. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Whieldon, Ashbourn, or to Police Constable Booth, Devizes, Wilts.— Bow- street, March 22. Absconded, charged with stealing at Hoxne, on the 8th instant, a Horse ( since recovered): HENRY HOWARD, alias SPRING, a native of Sweffling, near Saxmundham. about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, brown hair, dark eyes, dark complexion, thin face, no whiskers, rather large mouth, shows his teeth when laughing, and keeps low company ; dressed in black billycock hat, tight corduroy trousers, blue guernsey under vest, and long drab slop. Information to be given to Superintendent Cook, Eye, Suffolk, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 22. Stolen on the night of of the 21st November last, between 5 and 9 p. m. from a field in Selly Park, Worcestershire, near Birmingham, the Scotish trotting Mare, ' Belle,' a description » f which was in the Police Gazette of the 16th January last; there is now reason to believe that this mare died within 24 hours after being stolen, from exhaustion and being over driven upon the road side, or at some road side inn. Any person or persons giving such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders shall receive a reward of £ 50. Stolen on the 3rd instant, at East Hendred, Berks : a cotton cord Jacket, nearly new, man's size, and a pair of woman's strong leather Boots, nearly new, lace up in front. By a man about 45 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, lame of left leg, dark brown hair and whiskers, dark complexion, brown eyes, and oval features ; dressed in an old light cloth coat, with raised seams, old brown cloth trousers, the..- knees and seat patched with light cord, and brass buttons, stamped ' Wheeler, Wantage,' a black dudley hat, with a piece of red braid round it; has , a very dirty appearance, and tramps the country and frequents low lodging- houses : he was traced to Oxford. GEORGE THOMPSON, a travelling hat cleaner, is charged on a warrant with stealing a silk Hat, at Barnetby- le- Wold, on the 4th ultimo : he is about 55 years of age, about 5 feet .8 inches high, little or no whiskers, rather pale complexion ; dressed in black coat and trousers, high- crowned hat, and was wearing a white apron when at Barnetby; generally distributes bills a clay or two . before coming to a village. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Stevenitt, Police Station, Brigg, Lincolnshire.-— Bow- street, March 24. Absconded, JAMES MILLS, a native of Shipton, near Abingdon, Berkshire, charged with cutting and stealing the Hair from the manes and tails of six horses, the property of , Mr. William Mills, of Ablington Bibuiy : 30 years of age, j about 5 feet 4 inches high, dark complexion, and little or no whiskers ; dressed in an- old dirty white slop, fustian trousers, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He was employed last summer on an estate , as carter, and is well known of soma of the Berkshire Constabulary. Information to - be given to Superintendent Chipp, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, who. holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street,- March 22. Absconded from Rochdale on the 7th instant, charged with embezzling Monies, the property of the Rochdale Cor- poration : THOMAS DOBSON, late gas rate collector, 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, full grey eyes, pale complexion, long thin features, small dark mous- tache, slender figure, and of smart appearance. Information to' be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Rochdale, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 20. Absconded at 3 p m. on the 14th instant, charged with embezzling about 30s., from 412, Oxford- street: a porter, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair; dressed in brown. jacket, drab trousers, and black wideawake hat; well built, and likely to enlist a, s a soldier.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, March 20. Stolen about ® a. m. on the 17th instant, from the Barley Mow Inn, London- street, Reading : an aluminium Geneva Watch, with seconds hand, the minute hand broken off; a black cloth Vest, double- breasted ; and a pair of light cloth Trouser, with dark stripes down the side. By two men - who slept in the house : one about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, and has a peculiar look with one eye; dressed in black frock coat, black deerstalker hat, ( lark trousers, elastic- side boots, much too large, and large red and white striped scarf. The other about 19 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, short dark hair; dressed in black pilot coat, deerstalker hat, dark trousers, and sidespring boots ; had the appearance of a clerk. It is sup- posed that they travel about the country singing. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Purchase, Borough Police Office, Reading, Berks .— Bow- street, March 20. JOHN MALING, advertised in the Police Gazette Of the 8th instant, charged with stealing a silver verge Watch, and other Articles from a dwelling- house at South Shields, has been apprehended and committed for trial at the ensuing sessions at Durham, to be holden on the 3rd of April next. He is a returned convict, and was sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude at the Central Criminal Court, for larceny, on the lOtli of July, 1865.
