CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5019 MONDAY, MARCH 20, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. C. *„* " Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, aJ! betters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular . Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. Information to be given to Superintendent Metcalfe, North Riding Consta- bulary, Malton.— Bow- street, Match 17. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Aylesbury Steeplechases on the 13th instant: a gold consular Watch white, ( ivory tinted) dial, gold spade hands, English works, and horizontal escapement. Information to be given to Superintendent Denson, Aylesbury, Backs. — Bow- street, March 17. Description of a navvy named HENRY ROLLINGS, alias PUNCH, charged with stealing from the person of one Alexander Paterson, engine driver, on the Devon and Somerset Railway, on the 4th instant, a silver patent lever Watch, No. 7607 : 45s. in Money ; a Knife ; a tobacco Box; a centre Punch ; and other Articles : he is about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers, light blue eyes, small spot on ball of right eye, rather high cheek bones ; dressed in white slop, woollen cord vest, with flaps over pockets, and white pearl buttons, fustian trousers, Scotch cap, and new navvy boots; he belongs to the Devon- shire Militia, and is supposed t6 be a native of Plymouth. Information to be given to Superintendent Ross, Wivelscombe, Somerset, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. MURDER AIB MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Absconded, charged with seriously assaulting the now deceased Robert Williamson, near Bellsquarry, between the 11th and 12th instant: THOMAS HALEY, miner, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, brown liair and whiskers, sharp nose, hazel eyes, walks very erect; dressed in a black cloth shooting coat, vest, and trousers, and black cloth cap ; is a native of Clare, " Ireland, has a relative residing at Liverpool, and generally goes under the name of LANCA- SHIRE TOM. Information to be given to the Procurator- Fiscal, Sheriff Court Buildings, or to the Chief Constable of the county, County Rooms, Edinburgh, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street. March 17. Further information respecting THOMAS GAHAGHAN, charged with manslaughter in the city of Coventry, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th ultimo : he has been traced to No. 23, Chapel- street, Birmingham, and left there on the 14th ultimo, in company with a man, a wireworker, and a woman, with whom he is supposed to be travelling with fire- guards, toasting forks, and umbrellas, and attending fairs and races. Gahaghan is 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sandy hair, freckled face, stout build, bad appearance, and is an Irishman; is known in most of the towns in the midland counties, but has resided principally in Coventry, and is a member of the Warwickshire Militia. The other man is a native of Dudley, Worcestershire, but has not resided there for the past three or four years, 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair, sallow complexion, and small dark moustache. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Norris, City Police Office, Coventry.— Bow- street, March 15. Absconded, charged with being concerned, with MICHAEL CAMPBELL and JOHN CALBRAITH ( in custody), in the murder of Mr. Samuel Galloway, at Romford- road, Stratford, Essex, on the 9th ult. : JAMES BOUGER, alias MAY, alias MONTAGUE, alias MOODY, about 34 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair turning grey, whiskers and moustache ( may be clean shaved), full face, scar over ' eft eyebrow, nose long and appears to have been broken, of Jewish appearance, left arm smaller than right, and crooked at wrist; dressed in dark cloth walking coat with pockets on hips, dirty light trousers, and black wideawake hat: is a native of Bethnal Green. He was convicted at the Central Criminal Court July Sessions, 1864, of larceny from the person, and sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude, and he was discharged on the 20th July, 1868. Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Detective Office, Great Scotland- yard, or at any Police Station.— Bow- street, March 10. About 10 p. m. on the 17th January last, Emma Starkey, was murdered in Caughey- street, Hull, with an iron instru- ment, called a blacksmith's sett ( resembling a hatchet), which had a few days before been stolen from the works of Messrs. C. and W. Earle. A reward of £ 50 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government, and a further reward of £ 50 by the Corporation of. Hull, to any person or person who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the apprehen- sion and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, and also to any person or persons concerned in stealing the hatchet, with which the murder was committed ( not being the actual murderer), who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the same result. Information to be given to Chief Constable Cook, Police Office, 20, Parliament- street, Hull.— Bow- street, March 10. Inspector Smith, Police Station, Harlow, Essex.— Bow- street, March 13. During the night of the 11th instant,, the house of Mr. Dearlove, Maidenhead, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver Tea Caddy Spoon ; a silver lever Watch, No. 21216, Dent, London; a brown leather Purse,. elastic band, containing 2s and some pence; a silver Salt Spoon; about six plated Tea Spoons, some marked 1C. S. D.'; a silver Pen and Pencil- case, engraved ; a silver Tea Spoon; a flannel Shirt, chocolate stripe ; a calico Nightshirt ; and a Table Cloth. Information to be given to Superintendent Maegraw, Borough Police, Maidenhead.— Boio- street,. March 13. During the night of the 8th instant, a draper's shop,. 97, Northgate- street, Gloucester, was broken into, and stolen therein : £ 6 13s. 9d., consisting of two Sovereigns, two Half- sovereigns, 7s. or 8s. in Copper, and the remainder in Silver, amongst which were 6s. or 7s. worth of small Coins, a 6d, Piece, stamped ' 80,' and a crooked Sixpence or Fourpenny Piece; 15s. worth of Id. Receipt Stamps ; a Money Bag ; and two Club Tickets, on which were written ' Cranham Club' * for Drapery Goods. The same night a small grocer's shop at Seedbrooke, near Gloucester, was broken into, and stolen from a till about 9s. in Silver and Coppers, amongst which were 14 or 15 old Id. Stolen from the person of a lady, in St. Michael's Church, Malton, on the 14th instant, a green morocco leather Purse, Between 3 and 9 p. m. on the 5th instant1, some person or persons by means of a false key, entered the, dwelling- house of O. Downes, Church- street North, Colchester, and stolen therein : six Sovereigns ; ten Shillings in Silver ; a lady's large size D. B. S. silver Geneva Watch, maker Benson, London, No. 4936, a long gold guard Chain, with gold Locket, containing a photograph likeness on one side; two gold Keys, one a barrel key set round with blue stones, one of which was missing ; a large gold Brooch, with blood stone in centre ; and small Locket appended, with small stone to match ; also a smaller size Brooch; and two lady's gold finger Rings, ® ne of them set with fine blue stones. Absconded from Rochdale on the 7th instant, charged with embezzling Monies, the property of the Rochdale Cor- poration : THOMAS DOBSON, late gas rate collector, 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark hair, full grey eyes, pale complexion, long thin features, small dark mous- tache, slender figure, and of smart appearance. Information to be given to Chief Constable Stevens, Rochdale, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 20: Absconded at 3 p m. on the 14th instant, charged with embezzling about 30s., from 412, Oxford- street : a porter, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresli complexion, dark brown hair; dressed in brown jacket, drab trousers, and black wideawake hat; well built, and likely to enlist as a soldier.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, March 20. Description of JOHN SMITH, charged with embezzle- ment, 23 years of age, slenderly built, about 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair,, slight whiskers and moustache, front teeth much decayed.;. sup- posed to be dressed in a new suit of dark coloured, clothes, sometimes wears a sealskin cap. He is a native, of Wirks- wortb, Derbyshire, and has been employed as a solicitor's clerk. JOSEPH BRADBURY, against whom a warrant has been issued, charging him with embezzling £ 100 belonging to a commission agent in Glasgow, by whom he was engaged as traveller : about 2 § years of age, & feet or 8 inches high, broad shoulders, large bald head, only a small rim of hair round the head, red whiskers and moustache, smart, and good looking ; is a native of West Bromwich, is a good billiard player, a great betting man, and a heavy .. smoker; dressed when lie absconded, on the 5th instant, in greyish shooting- coat and felt li^ t, no overcoat. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to his apprehension, on application to Superintendent Brown, De- tective Department, Glasgow.— Bow- street, M archil. Absconded from Benson, Oxfordshire, on the 6th instant, charged with stealing from the premises df Mr. Samuel Alford, farmer, of Benson, on the night of the 4th instant, six bushels of Potatoes, and one bushel of Carrots: JOHN TOWN, labourer, of Benson, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 3| inches high, dark hair, very slight whiskers, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, proportionately built; dressed in short white slop, cord trousers, aud small black felt hat. Also ALERED GURNEY, labourer, of Benson, from 23 to 24 years of age, about, 5 feet- 6 inches high, light brown hair, very slight whiskers, sallow complexion, very splay- footed, and leans forward when walking; dressed in cord jacket or sleeve waistcoat, cord trousers, black felt liat, and strong. lacerup boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Seers, Police Station, Watlington, or to Police Constable Price, Police Station, Benson, Oxfordshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, March 10. Descriptien of a man who gave the name of WILLIAM BROOKS, remanded on a warrant at the Police Station, Slough, Bucks, charged with offering himself as a servant to Charles Meekins, Esq., at the parish of Iver, Bucks, on the 21st ultimo, with a false forged and counterfeit Certificate of character : he is 32 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair and whiskers, grey eyes, medium stature ; dressed in a pair of brown mixture cloth trousers, black velvet vest, with open front, black dress coat, soft black billy hat, and elastic- side boots ; he says he is a native of Hedenham, Norfolk. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Dunham, Police Station, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- street, March 20. Missing, si- noe the 5th of November last, from • Clapham, JENNY GEORGE, 10 years of age, short and stout, fair cowpfexioii, dark hair, dark blue eyes ; dressed.' in plaid stuff .. frocjs, red ajid brown. plaid. shawl, white. straw, hat. with wheat trimmings, white stockings, lace boots, eyelets. Further information respecting JOHN LAYTON, licence holder, No. 8202, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th instant: his sentence will expire on the 3rd April, 1,872> - not on 3rd proximo, as before stated.— Bow- street, March 20. Description of a licence holder who cannot be found at the address given by him : WILLIAM HARPER, No. 5388, 47 years of age, 5 feet inches, high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, cut mark on upper lip, ' T. H. L.' on left wrist; he was convicted of larceny at Hereford, on the 7th July, 1865, and sentenced to 7 years' penal servitude ; his sentence will expire on the 6tli July, 1872, he was discharged from Portland Gaol on the 6th ultitao ; he is to be apprehen- ded prior to date of expiration of sentence. Information to be given to Superintendent Lantsbury, Ely, Cambridgeshire. — Bow- street, March 20. Committed to the Oxford City Prison for twenty- one days' hard labour each,. for; attempting to pick pockets on the 25th ultimo : JOHN HARRIS, 44 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion and eyes ; dressed in double breasted dark overcoat, dark trousers, side- spring boots, and high hat. EMMA HARRIS, who says she is wife of the above, 30 years of age, looks older, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh com- plexion, dark eyes, very stout, and dressed in a grey water- proof cloak, grey cotton dress, and black crape bonnet ; lost third finger of left hand. She was convicted of a similar offence at Hereford in May last, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment ; also of a like offence at Portsmouth in Nov. FELONIES. ( Not otherwise described).
