POLICE 6AZETT CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with ih* time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may dead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 5010 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1871. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mado and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is mado for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor mnst be l « re| » ai « 8, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tho regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS, MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of JOHN MORLEY, mason or fence waller, of West Bradford, who, about 12 noon on the 8th instant, was seen in company with his wife Alice Morley, passing Horroksford, and going towards West Bradford, viS, Ribble Bridge, at which time they were heard quarrelling, at 2 p. m. the same day the body of Alice Morley was found dead in the River Ribble, near Waddington Brook Foot her husband not having been heard of since, it is suspected he murdered her, and afterwards absconded. He is 34 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and is a native of Grindleton, near Clitheroe ; dressed in a white linen jacket, white billycock hat, light coloured waistcoat, with white satin flowers, cotton cord trousers, and blucher boots, with three brass eyelet- holes on each side. He is fond of drinking, and frequents low public houses and beorshops, and was lately discharged from Wake- field Gaol, after 3 months imprisonment, for assaulting his wife. He may be found at stone quarries, railway, and other works, and places where masons' work is being done. A warrant has been issued for his apprehension. Information to be. given to the Chief Constable, West Riding Con- stabulary, Wakefield, or at the Superintendent's Office, Settle.— Bow- street, February 20. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, on the 21st instant, an old silver hunting verge Watch, maker Rodgers, Charing Cross, London, No. 10300, winds up in face. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jones, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire. ^ Bow- street, February 27. Description of two men in custody at Bury St. Edmunds, charged with stealing from the person a Purse containing four £ 5 Notes of Messrs. Oakes and Bevan's, Bury and Suffolk Bank, and about £ 15 in Gold and Silver ; one of the notes has been recovered, the other three, Nos. R 5030, R 5459, and R 5535, are still missing : JOHN, alias JAMES HARRISON, 52 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, tooth out in front, scar on upper lip, two scars on forehead, and ' E. A.' in ink on right arm ; dressed in black pilot great coat, black cloth dress coat, brown cloth trousers and vest with small yellow and black stripes^ name on buttons ' Clark, Hull,' violet and black plaid shirt, sidespring boots, and black hat without lining. Had in his possession a leather travelling hat Box, a common silver Geneva Watch, with centre seconds, a brass secret- link guard Chain, and a gold Ring with revolving bloodstone. States he lives in Derby- road, Nottingham, and was born in Dublin. JOHN WATSON, 57 years of age, 5 feet 9f inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, bald on top of head, grey whiskers, grey eyes, large features, scar on forehead, stout make ; dressed in black pilot great eoat bound with braid, black cloth frock coat and vest, dark brown trousers with very small dark stripes, name on buttons 1 Clark, Hull,' brown and white plaid shirt, black scarf with white spots, sidespring boots, and black hat, makers Waring and Co., Hull; states he belongs to Liverpool. They are supposed to have given false names, and when apprehended were in company with two others of the following description ; one 30 or 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair and complexion, and has a dark burn mark on left cheek ; dressed in dark clothes : the other 25 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light hair and complexion ; dressed in light clothes and light- coloured low hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Roberts, Borough Police Station, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 20. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 24th instant, the workshop of Mr. James A. Barrett, carpenter and wheelwright, at Fyfield, was broken into and stolen therein : a tool Basket; a trying plane ; a jack Plane ; two smoothing Planes ; a round Plane; a mortice Guage ; a drawing Knife ; a spoke Shave ; a tenon Saw ; a steel Square ; and three Chisels, all marked ' J. A. B.' Information to be given to Superintendent Hedger, Berks Constabulary, Abingdon.— Bow- street, February 27. Between 9 and 10 p. m. on the 21st instant, The Rowans, at Shurdington, near Cheltenham, the residence of William Scott, Esq., was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of diamond Ear- rings ; a diamond enamelled Brooch; a pair of topaz Ear- rings ; a gold Bracelet, with large garnet ; a large single Diamond ; two Indian gold Bracelets ; a gold cable Bracelet, with circular locket, blue enamel with diamonds ; two Indian plaited gold Bracelets ; an emerald Ring, set round with diamonds ; a hair Bracelet, with minia- tures set in gold ; a hair cable Bracelet; a Scotch pebble Bracelet; a plain gold Brooch; a gold Geneva Watch, No. 4906, maker Furber, and gold Chain, Alma pattern; a garnet Brooch, a garnet Bracelet; a silver Purse, in shape of a highland sporran, with cairngorm ; a plain gold Bracelet; and a Brooch and Ear- rings, tortoiseshell and gold. Supposed by three men of the following description : one 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, black whiskers and beard ' round chin ; dressed in dark jacket and trousers, and round j hard hat, and had the appearance of a blacksmith : another, 1 23 to 25 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, small sandy whiskers and moustache ; dressed in a long brown overcoat, velvet collar, light trousers, and high black hat : the other, 27 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, dark whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark jacket, blue trousers, sealskin waistcoat, and fashionable hard- crowned felt hat; this last man has been apprehended, and gave his name JOHN JONES, London. £ 100 reward will be paid to, any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offenders and recovery of the property. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Police Office, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, February 27. During the night of the 22nd instant the Montgomery Railway Station was broken into and £ 3 10s. in Gold and about £ 2 10s. in Silver, amongst which were a great many sixpences, stolen therein ; a gimlet and a f- inCh chisel were used at it. Information to be given to the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to Police Officer Thomas, Montgomery. Bow- street, February 24. j Between 9 and 10 p. m. on the 20th instant, Stoke House, the residence of Colonel Edward Somerset, at Stapleton, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 1 gold repeater Watch, Toulouse. 1 lady's gold Watch, with two Chains, maker Taylor, College Green. 1 hunting Watch, with hole in centre of upper case. 1 lady's gold Watch, with sundry small Lockets attached. 1 Geneva Watch, maker Datch Phillippe. 1 silver Watch. 1 gold chain Necklace, with carbuncle drop, set in diamonds. 1 carbuncle Brooch, with Ear- rings to match. 1 gold chain Necklace, with coral Cross, set in diamonds. 1 coronet of Coral. 2 amethyst Pins, mounted in gold. 1 turquoise light blue enamel Bracelet, with pearls and brilliants. 1 coral Pin, has a bunch of grapes. 1 light blue enamel Brooch, with pearl and brilliants. 1 gold chain Bracelet, with three dark blue enamel Lockets, with a spray of brilliants and hair at the back. 1 light blue enamel Ring, diamonds. 1 dove Ring, with enamel. 1 gold Tie. 1 large gold Brooch, turquoise centre. 1 gold Brooch, gold Locket attached. 1 blue turquoise snake Bracelet. 1 gold snake Bracelet, with carbuncle head. 1 gold chain Necklace, with three gold Lockets attached, on which were engraved monograms, with children's photographs inside. 1 pale coral Locket, with diamonds, Ear- rings to match. 1 pair of crystal Ear- rings, with flies of gold, brilliants and enamel. 1 gold chain Necklace, with three onyx Lockets, diamonds in the centre, and photograph inside, monograms at the back. I gold tie Brooch. 1 gold Brooch, with coral in centre. 1 horseshoe Brooch. 2 gold Lockets, witluphotographs. 1 dark blue enamelled Locket, with brilliant star. 1 enamel Watch, with a dragon on it. 1 gold Bracelet, with turquoise and diamonds in centre, with photographs. 1 plain gold Locket. 1 gold Necklace, with three Lockets. 1 crystal Locket, with pink enamel monograms. 1 gold Bracelet and Brooch, with carbuncles. 1 gold Necklace, with pearl Heart, Cross, and brilliants. 1 Locket and Ear- rings, blue enamel, of Foreign manu- facture. 1 gold Pin, with ladybird on it. 1 Waterloo Medal and Collar, with two clasps, and Cross for Peninsula. 1 Order of the Bath, C. B. Legion of Honor, Turkish Order. 1 Crimean Medal, with four clasps. 1 Cape Medal and Turkish Medal. 2 Tops of Dressing Case Glasses, with a Portcullis, silver. 1 gold Brooch, with miniature Medals attached. 1 Carbuncle, with blue enamel snake round. 1 gold Locket, with rubies. Information to be given to Captain Christian, R. N.; to the Chief Constable, Cheltenham ; or to Superintendent Rawle, Fishponds, near Bristol.— Bmo- street, February 24. Between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 20th instant, the dwelling- house of C. Walker, Esq., Wotton, near Gloucester, was broken and entered, and the contents of a portmanteau and drawers ransacked. The offenders being disturbed, decamped, stealing and carrying away a gentleman's black oval onyx mourning scarf Pin, pearl- set gold stud in centre. Two ladders, one 23 and the other 14 rounds, which had been removed from a building a quarter of a mile distant, and tied together, were used to reach the window by which the house was entered, and left behind; a box of matches ( damp- proof safety lights), makers Leonard and Co., Nelson- street Hall, Bristol, was left in the bedroom. The footprints of three men were traced on the flower borders near the house, two of which are of middle size and leDgth, one nailed with round- headed nails, the other without nails, and the third is a narrow short track, also without nails, and small tread. Two men of the following description were seen near the premises at 11 a. m. and 5 p. m. on the same day, and are suspected : one about 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, middle size, ruddy complexion, sandy moustache, and small tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in an alpine hat, dark snuff- coloured topcoat, and blue trousers : the other about 33 years of age, 5 feet Js or 7 inches high, stout make, dark moustache, and largfe*' tuft of hair on chin; dressed in'.' a fashionable fiat- crowned felt hat, dark mixture topcoat, and dark trousers. £ 10 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offenders. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, February 24. Between 1 and 5 p. m. on the 19th instant the dwelling- house of Thomas Parker, at Cudham, Kent, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a silver open face verge " Watch, maker Goldworthy, Chelsea, ' Thomas James' on cap, ' T. P.' scratched on back of case ; a silver neck Guard and do. Albert, with Key in shape of horse's fore leg attached ; a black cloth Frock Coat and Vest, nearly new ; a pair of light cloth Trousers, Scotch pattern, fly fronts, a pair do. yellowish shade, small piece let in top right thigh ; two white Vests— one double breasted, the other pepper and salt: a woollen Shirt; a pair of red kid Gloves ; a silk handkerchief; two wrappers— one with red spots, the other a blue border and a forester's star. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, little whiskers ; dressed in light trousers, white slop, dark cap, and old militia boots, much worn, a bricklayer's labourer, and supposed to be well known in Croydon, Surrey. Information to be given to Sergeant Pope, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, February 22. The house of Mr. Ferdinand Booth, farmer, Pentrich lane, Ripley, was broken and entered on the night of the 19th instant, and stolen therein : four £ 5 Notes, one of the Bank of England, and three of the Wirksworth Bank ; £ 15 in Gold ; 29s. in Silver ; a small leather Purse, with elastic band; 5s. or 6s. in Silver ; a small barrel- shaped Box, opens at the end, which contained the notes; six silver tea Spoons, marked ' F. B.' on the handle ; and a missionary Box, containing some Coppers Information to be given to Superintendent Rust, Constabulary Office, Heanor, to Inspector Mosley, Police Station, Ripley, at the Detective's Office, Chief Constable's Office, Derby, or at any County Police Station.— Bmo- street, February 22. Between 6 and 8 p. m. on the 19th instant, the post office at Farningham, Kent, was broken and entered and stolen therein, about £ 20 in Gold, £ 13 in Silver, a £ 5 Bank of England Note, No. 58088, dated 29th December, 1870, a silver pencil Case, a gold Brooch, with hair in centre, a cameo Brooch, and a gold Seal, imitation of a bird with its wings open. Supposed by two men about 26 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, whiskers shaved off, high cheek bones, light brown hair, rather sallow complexion; both dressed in dark trousers, brown overcoats, and black high hats ; had the appearance of being brothers, and one of them was lame of the left leg. Information to be given to Super- intendent Brandon, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- street, February 22. Between the 1st and 6th instant, the dwelling- house of Mrs. Wragg, of Burton- on- Trent, was broken and entered, and three Counterpanes, five Blankets, a Sheet, four Dresses, five Chemises, and three Night- gowns were stolen therein : Supposed by a man who has absconded, 37 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches liigh, dark brown hair and whiskers, slightly pockpitted, has worked as a maltster, and is a native of York, to which place it is supposed he has gone. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from Lampeter on the night of the 25th instant ; a large white mare Pony-, aged-, switch tail. In low condition, the property of Mr. Joseph Sturday. Information to be giv6n to Superintendent Lloyd, Llandyssul, or to Sergeant Roberts, Lampeter, Cardiganshire.— Bow- street, February 27. JAMES NORBURY has been committed to Chester Castle, for trial at the Spring Assizes, on a charge of stealing the Horse from Mr. James Birtles farm, at Swettenham, Cheshire, advertised, in the Police Gazette of the 20th instant; and he is also committed on a charge of stealing a Horse from Mrs. Booths, at Gatley, on the night of the 22nd instant; both horses have been recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Rowbottom, Cheshire Constabu- lary, Middiewich.— How- street, February 27. Committed for trial to the Northampton Assizes on the 7th proximo, dharged with: stealing the four Horses from Steene on the 19th ultimo : JOSEPH WILSON, alias J. BUTCHER, a native of Girtford, near Sandy, Beds, and ALFRED SMITH, alias MYNOTT, of Boreliam, near Chelmsford, Essex ( for description, see Police Gazette of the 6th instant). The third man implicated is still at large, and a warrant is issued for his apprehension : his name is JOSEPH JONES, alias BIG JOEY, a native of Harrow- green, Ley- tonstone, Essex, about 26 years of age, 6 feet high, iir. nful shoulders, swarthy complexion, lounging gait, long full face, dark brown hair, no whiskers, beard, or moustache, and has, lost the first joint of one finger; dressed in a dark green mixture, suit of clothes, with stripes and raised seams, the trousers fitting tight to the leg, or a brown suit; he is a horse dealer, and has been in the habit of attending fairs with the above- named men, and also Smithfield- market on Fridays. Information to be given to Superintendent Ayborn, Tow- cester, or to Inspector Botterill, Brackly, who holds the warrant for liis apprehension.— Bow- street, February 20. LARCEIY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of GEORGE WEBB, charged on a^ warrant with stealing a pair of Boots, and some shoemaker's Tools, fit Brighton, on the 18th instant: a shoemaker, about 86> years of » <* e, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, can read and write well, and is a native of Brighton :. well known in the'West of. Sussex. Information • to be given to Chief Constable White, Brighton.- Bow- street, February 24. : v. Stolen : on- the 22nd. instant, from a new- building at Guisboro', three bricklayers' Trowels; a Spirit Level, with ' William James Messenger, Guisbro',' stamped ou the brass, and ' Wm. Messenger' stamped on eaeh end of the wood ; a mason's Mallet, 4^ inches; two Boasters ; and two 1 inch Chisels. By two tramping masons applying for. work : one about 50 years of age, 5 feet ( i or 7 inches high, brown hair, dark eyes ; dressed in old grey mixture coat and vest,- old patched fustian trousers, a mason's apron, dirty cap with br- oitd top. and strong hAe- np boots : the other abolit' 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, light brown ittuv, sallow comutexion, lounging- gait, and turns liis feet out very much ; dressed in long black frock coat and vest, cotton oord trousers, small cloth cap, and strong lace- up boots. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of JOHN McPHIAL, who deserted from the Royal Artillery Barracks, at Sheerness, on the 12th instant, stealing a Suit of heather tweed brown and yellow mixture ; two grey flannel Shirts; a lambswool under Shirt, marked ' A. C. M.;' four pairs' of Socks- a soldier's india rubber Bag, with draw string; a black cloth Yest ; a Mexican Dollar ; a set of gold Shirt Studs • and a gold Scarf Pin. He enlisted at Glasgow oil the 3rd August, • 1870, was born at Ashbourne, Derbyshire, is a shoeingsmith, has worked as a boilermaker at a ship- builders at Goban, near Glasgow ; he is well known m South- ampton, supposed to have served his apprenticeship there; may be wearing a blue overcoat with velvet collar, lie is, from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, sallow com- plexion moustache shaved off, short neck, stiff built, has a rollino- gait, and carries his head a little forward Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Mayne, Police Coitrt, Sittingbourne, Kent— Bow- strict, Feb'uary 24, Absconded from Tadcaster, charged with stealing, from a dwellino-- house at Acaster, on the 21st ultimo, a pair of silver Sural- Tongs, six silver Tea Spoons, and two silver Table Spoons all marked'W.
