The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of 11 itity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may ,. lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpoeo of tracing and recovering them. CONTAINING Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or Btolen property, may hear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. C. *** Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Setters addressed to the Editor must he prepaidi, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War OfSce, Pall Mall, London, S. Stolen by means of housebreaking, from a pawnbroker's shop at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, between the 11th and 12th inst. : 3 small gold Geneva Watches, with gold dials. 6 patent lever silver Watches, Nos. 3367, 4160, 1809, 9430, 6952, 6300. 12 patent lever silver Watches. 13 silver Watches, either verge or Geneva, Nos. 14723, 44299, 2615, 7423, 2793, 20931, 2535, 34223, 11770, 4354, 3793, 6754, 3364. About 27 old verge and Geneva Watches, valuable only as old silver. A long gold Guard, cable pattern. A number of gold Scarf- pins, one set with two rubies, others of masonic and other patterns. A lady's gold Brooch and two gilt Brooches. A lady's gold Necklet, snake pattern. About 300 gold finger Bins, both new and old, some set with various stones, others plain. 6 plain pewter Table Spoons, new. 6 Knives and Forks, with white handles, new. A reward of £ 20 is offered for the recovery of the property and for such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offenders. Robarts and Company, bankers, Lombard- street THOMAS HALLAM, has been known by the names of GRIFFITHS, LENNOX, and VEVAN, about 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, full liazel eyes, light brown hair, small sandy whiskers and moustache, moderate figure, is usually well dressed, and has served in the Royal Marines. £ 30 reward will be paid for such information as will lead to his apprehension, and recovery of the property, or in proportion to the amount recovered, if given within 3 months from the 14th instant. During the night of the 18th instant, Grafton House, Worthing, was broken and entered and the following articles stolen therein : a pair of silk crimson Curtains ; a large square | Airton, Dewsbury. plated Inkstand ; three woollen Blankets ; a white Blanket,! marked ' J. E. T.;' a white Counterpane. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, West Sussex Constabu- lary, Worthing.— Bow- street, January 20. Between 1 and 5 p. m. on the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Jenkinson, at Aketon, in the township of Follifoot, was forcibly entered, and the following property stolen therein : a blue pilot Overcoat, black velvet collar, a pearl Necklace with amytliyst clasp ; a gold link Bracelet with turquoise fastening in shape of a claw ; 4 gold Seals— 1 with crest a hand and dagger, motto ' Spes meando,' 1 en- graved with representation of a column enlivened by ivy, and 2 plain ; a gold Pencil- case, set with emeralds and turquoise ; a silver Top of scent bottle ; and a large cameo Brooch, subject the figure of a female..— Metropolitan Police, T Divi- sion, January 13. Between 12 midnight 6tli and 8 a. m. on the 7th instant, a lock- up shop at Birkenshaw, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : about 10s. in Silver; about 20s. in copper ; three pairs of men's new elastic- side Boots; eight men's woollen Shirts, black and scarlet stripes. A pair of the stolen boots have been found pledged by a man, from 30 to 40 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fresh comp- exion, light brown hair, and stout built; dressed in old dark pilot jacket, old brown vest, white moleskin trousers, and dark worsted cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Ttmn- street. January 13. will be paid upon the restoration of the horse, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, January 16. Description of a Horse which was stolen between 12 p. m. on the 13tli and 5 a. m. on the 14th instant, from a stable at Newstead, in the township of Lead : a light bay carting horse, 8 years old; 17 hands high, short mane and tail, hair rubbed off the tail and hip, one of the fore legs thicker than the other below the knee, fore feet shod and sharpened, low condition ; also a pair of Blinders and Halter. Information to be given to Superintendent Wardle, West Riding Con- stabulary, Selby.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen between 5 and 9 p. m. on the 2lst November last, from a field at the corner of Eastern and Oalcfield- roads, Selly Park, in the county of Worcester, near Birmingham, the Scottish trotting Mare, ' Belle,' aged, bay brown colour, about 15 hands high, scar on one knee, a curb on one hock, and a scar on one hind heel, the remains of a sand crack in front, and poor brittle fore feet ; she was in foal, which she may by this time have dropped, in appearance a strong common mare, plain head and neck, of the long low class, and without white. By two men : one of whom is about 35 yrs. of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, well proportioned, round features, pockpitted, and clean shaved ; generally wears a billycock hat, brim rather broad and flat. The other is taller, but cannot be described. £ 50 reward will be paid on conviction of the thief, and recovery of the mare, on appli- cation to Chief Inspector Manton, Detective Department, Moor- street, Birmingham.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen from a lodge at Shipbourne, Kent, during the night of the 10th instant : a light chesnut mare Pony, 14 hands high, with three white legs and face, and one fore leg black and white at hoof, in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Police Court, Tunbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, January 13. Stolen on the night of the 5th iustant, from a field at the Four Ashes Hall, in the parish of Enville, the property of the Rev. Charles Amplett, a light brown horse Pony, aged, 13 bands high, star on forehead, and a little white above the near hind hoof. Supposed by a man who escaped from Stafford Asylum on the 29th ultimo, see Police Gazette of 30th ultimo. Information to be given to Sergeant Baldwin, Police Station, Kinver, near Stourbridge, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 13. Supposed stolen on the 3rd instant, from Totterton, near Bishops Castle, Salop, 20 yearling Shropshire down Sheep, ewes and wethers, marked ' J. S.,' in pitch, the property of Mr. Shuker. Information to be given to Superintendent Baxter, Church Stretton, Salop.— Bow- street, January 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Description of WILLIAM JONES, charged with stealing a Horse, at White Notley, ou the 4th instant, since recovered he is 25 or 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, light brown hair, fair complexion, little or no whiskers ; generally dressed in soft felt hat, brown cloth coat, vest, and trousers, black and red plaid lining, two pockets outside, one inside j with raised seams, fitting tight to his legs, formerly lived at left breast, and has four bright black buttons on it; a black | Leyton or Woodford, Essex, and is now supposed at Dulwich cloth Vest, two pockets and a watch pocket in left breast,; or Clapton. Information to be given to Superintendent black covered buttons, and light drab lining ; a pair of cloth jAckers, Police Station, Braintree, Essex, who holds a warrant Trousers, grey and black stripe, broad stripes down sides, pattern attached ; a plain cotton Shirt, without collar, lined with white cotton on shoulders; a silver watch Guard, round links; aud a red woollen Muffler. An old brown ribbed cloth Coat, with velvet collar, and a red Handkerchief with round white spots, were left behind. Information to be given at the Superintendent's Office, Knaresborough, York- shire.— Bow- street, January 20. On the niglit of the 17tli instant, the house of William Pool, in Little Eaton, Derbyshire, was broken into, and the following Articles stolen : a brown Topcoat, with black velvet collar; two black cloth Coats and Vests; a grey Coat and pair of Trousers; a black cloth Coat and Vest, old ; a dark spotted Coat; a pair of dark cloth Trousers, with invisible plaid squares; a silk Handkerchief, cream coloured ground with lavender stars ; a silk Handkerchief, orange ground; two cotton Handkerchiefs, one red with white spots. Sup- posed to have been committed by two furnace men on tramp. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Lawson, • Constabulary Office, Litchurch, near Derby.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen on the night of the 15th instant, from the shop of Messrs. J. P. and G. Reeds, of Stokesley, grocers, by breaking and entering the back premises, about £ 3, consisting of Pennies and Halfpennies. Information to be given to Super- intendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, South Stockton, or to Sergeant Clarkson, Police Office, Stokesley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 18. ' On the night of the 15th instant, the farm house at Haw- thornside, Roxburghshire, was broken into and stolen therein: a yellow leather pocket Book, containing three £ 5 Scotch bank Notes, four £ l ditto ; a Half Sovereign, a small sum in Silver and Copper Money ; about 5s. worth of Postage and Receipt Stamps ; a bottle of Brandy ; a currant Loaf ; and a copy of the " Scotsman" newspaper, addressed to Wm. for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen from a yard at Bexhill, during the night of the 16th instant: a bay cob Mare, about 15 years old, about 14 hands high, in good condition, rough coated, new shoes, one or both white bind feet, cannot lay down, having been hurt in left hind hip, and walks lame at times. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffrey, Guestling, to P. C. Moore, Bexhill, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen from a field at Buttington during the night of the 12th instant : a dark brown cart Filly, rising 3 years old, in low condition, small white star on forehead, and no other white upon her, had not been shod or handled. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, Welshpool, or to Police Constable David Richards, Buttington, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- street, January 18. Found and supposed to have been stolen about the 23rd ultimo, at Mr. Reed's farm, Bromley, in the parish of Upper Arley, Staffordshire : a black Welsh mare Pony, aged, about 10 hands high, star on forehead, white spot on nose, and a white strake on the near hind leg. Information to be given to Sergeant Baldwin, Kinver, or to P. C. Farmer, Police Station, Upper Arley, near Bewdley, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, January 18. Found, supposed to have been stolen, a dark brown Pony, 14 hands high, black mane and tail, hind feet white, white spot on nostril, and in good condition. Information to be given to Inspector Palmer, Longford, Coventry.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen from a stable at Broke Mill, in the parish of Hayley, on the night of the 13th instant: a light brown cob Horse, about 15 hands high, rising 7 years old, black mane and tail, which is rather long, little white on face, small crack on fore foot, recently shod, and in good condition. £ 1 reward LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Tiverton, charged with embezzlement : WALTER WHALLEY, a butcher's apprentice, 20 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, very fresh looking, and bght hair ; dressed in grey coat, drab trousers, dark topcoat, and black billycock hat; is well known about Crewe and Aud- lem. £ 1 reward will be paid on his apprehension. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Gwynne, Tarporley, Cheshire.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen from a public- house at Reach, Cambs. on the 17th instant : a blue pilot Jacket, nearly new, has two pockets outside, and one inside left breast, velvet collar, sleeves lined with crimson and body with purple mixture, also a silk Neck- tie, plaid pattern, and an old hair Brush. By a man, who lodged in the house, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale swarthy complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers ; dressed in dark cap, old cord jacket, patched and old cord trousers, patched in front, and heavy shoes, one of them toe capped and fancy slit tongues. Information to be given to Inspector Greig, Police Station, Bottisham, Cambridge.— Bow- street, January 20. Absconded from Brotton, near Saltburn by- the- Sea, North Riding of Yorkshire, on the 6th instant, charged with obtain- ing money by false pretences ( in concert with Henry Collins, who was commitced to take his trial at the next quarter sessions to be held at Northallerton) : THOMAS HOLMES, an ironstone miner, native of the neighbourhood of London, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, grey eyes, light brown hair, sandy whiskers all round his face, proportionate make, and usually wears a fustian suit when at work, and when dressed, wears a blue pilot jacket and vest, brown cloth trousers, fancy lace- up boots, and glengarry cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Prest, Constabulary Office, Guisbrongh, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 20. Absconded from Edinburgh, charged with embezzlement, WILLIAM WATT, a native of Edinburgh, an edge- tool maker by trade, but lately a collector in the employment of the Edinburgh and Leith Gas Company, about 38 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark brown hair, bushy whiskers and moustache, round full face, slightly pockpitted, stout made ; dressed in dark tweed topcoat and trousers, and dress hat, but may be wearing a suit of light tweed clothes. Information to be given to Mr. Johnston, Procurator- Fiscal, City Chambers, or to the Superintendent of Police, Edinburgh. — Bow- street, January 20. Absconded from Manchester, charged on a warrant with forgery and embezzlement: THOMAS WILLIAM BROWN, a clerk, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 10J inches high, red hair, red stubby whiskars and moustache, rather pale full face, broad forehead, double chin, slovenly gait, and full staring eyes; dressed respectably in dark clothes, and billycock hat. £ 10 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Manchester. — Bow- street, January 20. Absconded in October last, from the service of Mr. Cook, 98, Fleet- street, stealing a Railway Coupon Ticket, value £ 6 6s. 5d, the property of his said master: LOUIS ROSEN- THAL, a German Jew, No. 15, Dudley- street, Seveu DiaiS, about 62 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark hair, eyes, and complexion, dark moustache, turning grey, no whiskers, bow legged, and walks with a stooping gait ; dressed in dark mixture overcoat, long waisted, and side- spring boots; speaks German, French, and English. Information to be given at the Fleet Street Station, London, E. C., where a warrant lies for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 18. Absconded from Gloucester, on the 5th instant, charged with embezzling the sum of £ 2 9s., the monies of his em- ployers : FRANCIS WILLIAM BEARD, a clerk, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, thin made, long features, pale complexion, brown hair, and has a peculiar way of placing his lower lip in his mouth ; dressed in a round hard bowler hat, dark mixture suit of clothes, and lace- up boots. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, January 18. Description of SAMUEL BRACEGIRDLE, charged with stealing wearing Apparel, from the house of Thomas Pollitt, of 31, Edward- street, Stockport: he is 35 years of age, 5 feet 4f inches high, stout, brown hair and whiskers, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, has a cut on centre of forehead ; dressed in a dark pilot coat, cotton cord trousers and vest, black billycock hat, with wire rim, is a labourer, and was discharged from the Knutsford House of' Correction, on the 10th » f October last, after having been imprisoned 6 months for felony, at Knutsford ; he is a native of Mobberley, near Knutsford, and he ' is supposed to be searching fot^ work between Altrincham and Liverpool; he was reported iu the Police Gazette of the 14th October last, as an Habitual Criminal. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Moores, Stockport, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, January 18. Stolen from the yard of the Three Horse Shoes Hotel, Rugby, about 7 p. m. on the 7th instant, a travelling Rug ( recovered)': by a sweep, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout, sandy whiskers, thick and bushy on chin, fresh complexion, and dressed in dark slop, torn up back of left sleeve, blue monkey jacket underneath, left side pocket torn, black cord trousers, patched on both knees, elastic- side boots, and dark cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Wild, Rugby, Warwickshire. — Bow- street, January 16. Description of SAMUEL SHENTON, fishmonger, who is charged upon a warrant with larceny, as bailee of certain Monies and Fish Property of Walter Pierce, of Wellington, fishmonger. He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, light brown hair, no whiskers, very small light moustache, silver ring on fourth finger left hand, and a native of Stafford ; dressed in black cloth monkey jacket with black velvet collar, cloth trousers, lace- up boots, black cloth cap, made to turn down over the ears, and black and white muffler. Information to be given to Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop, wkere a warrant lies for his apprehension,— Bow- street, January 16. Description of GEORGE HALL, a stableman, charged with stealing 12s. 6d. at Shotover, near Oxford, on the 26th ultimo, the Monies of Elizabeth Baker: about 28 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, hair and whiskers; likely to be found at the Devonport Arms, near Paddington Railway Station, or the Hetherington Livery Stables, Edgware- road. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Fernsby, or to Inspector Charles Yates, County Police Station, Oxford, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen at 5' 40 p. m. on the I2th instant, at No. 4, Upper Berkeley- street, Portman- square, St. Marylebone : two dia- mond eollette Necklaces, composed of large single stones ; an opal and diamond round cluster Pendant, with drops; a diamond shell- centre Pendant, with drops; iwo diamond half- hoop Rings, five stones in each ; a ditto ditto, with three stones.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, January 16. Absconded on the 12th instant, charged with embezzling £ 2 10s. from No. 4, York- terrace, Ratcliff, a baker, 17 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, and dressed in a pilot jacket, light cloth trousers, dark cloth vest, black billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, Jan. 16. A warrant is issued for the apprehension of WILLIAM HEWITT, charged with felony : he is about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, large and long features, sallow com- plexion, and dark brown hair dressed in brown cloth over- coat and black billycock hat; is . supposed to be in Manchester or Barton- upon- Irwell, and is a native of Stockport. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Moores, Stock- port, Cheshire.— Bqw- piffeit, January 16. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of JAMES DAVIDSON, who absconded on the 12th instant, charged with stealing Tea, Drapery Goods, Account Books, and Monies, the property of his master, Mr. MacCracken, Launceston., Cornwall. He left Plymouth for London on the 13th instant, under the name of BROWN, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light sandy hair, whiskers, moustache; bald on the top of the head, broad Scotch accent ; when he left he was dressed in low felt hat, dark doeskin coat, speckled with grey, two pockets out- side, one on left breast, J- inch braid on pockets, grey trousers and vest, black patent leather leggings, a new pair of elastic side boots, right boot rather large, turns his feet out when walking ( especially right foot) ; formerly a porter at the Leamington Station, Biggar. Information to be given to Head Constable Barrett, Launceston, Cornwall.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen from the Elephant and Castle Hotel, Newtown, on the night of the 12th instant: a japanned contribution Box, for widows and orphans of commercial travellers, containing money ; a travelling Rug, worn, black on one side, spotted round the border on the other, and striped in centre. By a man from 50 to 60 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, grey whiskers, and dressed in dark clothes and hat; has a respectable appearance. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.—- Brno street, January 16. FRAUDS AMD AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of RICHARD LACEY, a law_ student, charged on a warrant with obtaining £ 5 from the wife of Mr. E. H. Hobbs, at Peterborough, on the 3rd instant, by false pretences : he is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, full face, grey eyes, light brown hair, thin light moustache, no whiskers, proportionate make, and of good address ; dressed in a light grey mixture suit, brown cloth overcoat with velvet collar, and black hard fell hat with broad brim. He is supposed to have recently left college at Oxford, and to be we'll known in Worcester and London. £ 1 reward will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Brooke, Constabulary Office, Peterborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, January 18. A warrant wafe, on the 23rd July last, issued at the Marylebone Police Court, London, for the apprehension of HARRY LOFTUS CUSACK SCOTSON, charged with obtaining money by false pretences : he is about 22 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, moderately stout, youthful appearance, . genteel manner, and usually well dressed. He is supposed to be travelling, stay- ing at hotels in provincial towns, and probably paying his bills with fictitious cheques. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person, who will, within three calendar months from the 12th instant, give such information as shall lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Marylebone- lane, London ; to Inspector Bailey, Police Office, Old Jewry, London ; or to Messrs. R. and S. Mullens, 68, Cbeapside, London.— Bow- street. January 16. remand on two charges of larceny, he is 50 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fresh complexion, round full face, blue eyes, grey hair, whiskers round face and chin, which are also grey ; dressed in old brown cloth coat, grey cloth vest, moleskin trousers, red and black muffler, billycock hat, and lace- up clogs.
