As no charge is made for'the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all ' Xetters addressed to the Editor must toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. A man, 35; plexion, sandy FROM ROBBERY AND LARCENY THE PERSON. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the person of Edward Guardhouse, at Penrith : an old fashioned silver Watch, double. cases, the dial of which is broken at the figure 6. Supposed by a man about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 or II inches high, dark complexion, black beard and whiskers ; dressed in a black or dark suit, black box hat, with crape band, about 4 or 5 inches deep. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on the 29 th ultimo, whilst on the race course in the township of Seamer, in the North Riding of Yorkshire : a silver patent lever Watch, No. 3564, white dial, and plain figures ; also stolen froni. the person of a gentleman • on the 3.0th ultimo, whilst on the race . course : a small gold Geneva Watch, white dial, seconds hand, plain figures, maker Benson, London, on back of the inner case, ornamental chaseing on back of outer case. Information to be given to Superintendent Jonas, North Riding Consta- bulary, Pickering, or to Inspector Ryder; North Riding Con- stabulary, Falsgrave, Scarborough.— Bow- street, September 2. Stolen from a gentleman at Oldham at about 1 a. m. on the 30th instant: a gold lever Watch, gold dial,_ with the representation of the American House of Congress engraven thereon, engine- turned cases with the representation of a hand bell in the centre of the3 outer case, No. 5544, maker's name supposed Gosz. By two young men " of low stature wearing dark clothes and billycock hats. Also stolen'froip tjie person on the 29th instant: £ 8 14s, By a woman, about 50 years of age, rather low Stature, her mouth appears a little drawn on one side; she wears a black cape and black bonnet. Information to be given at the Town Hall, Oldham.— Bow- street, August 31. whiskers and moustache, and dressed in black coat and trousers, and black billy dock hat, which, with an old ragged waistcoat, were found next morning a short distance from the premises. They were seen at St. Neot's, Hunts, on the 3rd instant. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Graham, County Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- st., September 7. ' Between the hours of 10 a. m. and 1 p. m. on the 3rd instant, the dwelling house of Robert Sumerville, labourer, of Emberton, Bucks, was Entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom :— A black cloth Coat, pockets on side, and breast pocket bn left side, lined with black alpaca ; a dark mixture cloth Waistcoat; a pair of grey cloth Trousers ; a low- crowned Hat; a large yellow Neckerchief; and a yellow Shawl, with black flowers. Information to be given to Inspector Hall, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow-' street, Sept. 5. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the 2nd instant, at Holbeach Bank, the property of William Cook, labourer : a black cloth Coat, cuffs turned up and not stitched, black cloth buttons, two buttons behind, and one row in front ; a* black cloth Vest, lined ^> vith calico, cloth buttons ; a pair of dark blue cloth Trousers, lined with calico nearly to the bottoms, full fall, black bone buttons", and dark jean pockets ; a black billycock Hat, with broad band round it; a black Neckerchief, not much worn ; a pair of light half Boots, with eyelet- holes, thick soles, sprigged all round, short laces, and broad tags ; a. drabbet Slop, with band round the bottom, white metal buttons down the front, and nearly new ; a white holland Slop, with belt round bottom, white metal buttons down the front, new; two white calico Shirts; a Pocket- handkerchief, various colours, red ground, squares in middle, and diamonds in border ; four Sovereigns, three half ditto, a Half- crown, a Shilling, and a Sixpence. Supposed by a man,, from 30 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 to 8 inches high, thin face, no whiskers, rather, fair complexion, light, brown hair cut short,- face bloody, njwt eye. black, cut on same cheek, and appeared to'be lame cHt leg ; dressed in light moleskin trousers, greasy in front and ragged at bottoms, cloth waist- coat, with a running flower, red, white, and blue, and moleskin back, low- crowned hat with white buckle on side, and red neckerchief tied full of knots. Information to b6 given to Superintended Leaper, Spalding, Lincolnshire.— Bow- street, September,!}. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen from a marsh near the bank of the River Thames, at the parish of Stone, between the 3rd and 5tli instant, two half- bred wether Lambs, about 5 months old, marked ' S.' on off hips, the property of Mr. George Styles. Information to be given to Superintendent Brandon, Kent Constabulary, Dartford.— Bow- street, September 7. Stolen at Stratford- upon- Avon, a bay cart Horse, stands 15j hands high, a small white blaze down face, white spot on off side of breast, a ditto on right side of back, from saddle pinch, forelegs'grizzly up to knee joints, white hind legs up to fetlock, and has a subiance formed in the throat. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Rowley, Borough Police Office, Stratford- upon- Avon, Warwickshire. — Boio- street, September 5..... " •>/; Stolen from- a field at Langley, near Oldbury, Worcester- shire, a very dark brown thick bodied Horse, 15 hands high, thin legs, good action, shod with leathers, tail cut square, thin mane; small star on forehead, the property of Mr. J. Chambers. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Halesowen, or to Sergeant Simmonds, Police Station, Old- bury, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, September 5. Forwarded by Railway from Leicester to Hinckley, on the 25th ultimo, and is now at the George Hotel, supposed to have been stolen -. a chesnut Horse, about 17 hands high, 5 years old, switch tail, in good condition, and to all appearances a valuable one. Information to be given to Superintendent Moore, Constabulary Station, Hinckley, Leicestershire.— Bow- street, September 2. The Horse stolen from Thorpe on the 16th ultimo has been recovered at Walsoken, and two men, WILLIAM MOON, alias MOONSHINE, and ROBERT COSLE, with whom it has been found, have been both committed for trial at the next quarter sessions; they are both convicted horse stealers, and in their possession was p, lsr> found a bay Mare, about 15 hands high, aged, broken knees, in fair condition, black mane and tail, and appears well bred ; supposed stolen from near London ; also a square Cart, such as used by dealers or butchers in London, of a dull green colour, picked out with white ; and a set of silver mounted Harness, with a rose on head stall and winkers. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Atthill, County Police Station, Norwich. - Bow- street, September 2. Stolen from the Shrewsbury Smithfield Market, on the 30th ultimo, five ewe Sheep, marked with blue on shoulders, Stolen by means of housebreaking at Crossways, Old Radnor, on the 31st ultimo, supposed by'tfamps : eight calico Shirts,' full size, two of them with linen collars and stripes , down the fronts, black billycock hat, large blue and white Mpaint . on the back of head, and letter < L on the rump, bundle handkerchief, marked < J. J.' ki one corner, two pairs Information to be given to Head Constable Davies, Shrews- of cotton and five pairs of worsted Stocking ; twenty yards of unbleached shirting Calico, washed ready to be made up ; and three or four pots of black and red currant Jam. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Wheeldon, Police Station, Penybont, Radnorshire.— Bow- street, September 5. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 1 and 5 p. m. on the lst instant, the dwelling- house of John Field," labourer, at Udimore, Sussex, was broken into, and two silver ve » ge Watches stolen therein, one large, maker John Sylver, Dublin, the other small, No. 55445, both had Roman figures. Information to be given to Super- intendent Jeffery, Guestling, Hastings, Sussex.— Bow- street, September 7. During the night of the 9nd instant, the dwelling- house of Miss Turner, Goldington Hall, was broken and entered, and the following property . stolen therein : a dark grey soft woollen Overcoat, a black clerical felt Hat, a brown silk Umbrella, with cane handle, a. ditto, with black wooden handle, straight top ; a black merino Shawl with fringe, and a Hat Brush. Supposed by two tramps, who had. been seen loitering near the premises in the. afternoon and evening one is about SO years of age, short,- rather stout, rwhiskers shaved off, and wore a brown striped, shirt and cap with peak; the other is about the same age, rather taller, dark The house of Miss Saunders, at Glanrhydw, in the parish of Llandefeilog, Carmarthenshire, was broken into by some person or. persons unknown, between 10 p. m. the 3fst ultimo, and. 7 a. m. on the lst instant, and the following articles stolen: twelve old dessert Spoons ; twelve old tea Spoons ; a mustard Pot, all silver ; twelve plated dinner Forks ; twelve plated small Forks, with crest on, supposed a bull; about nine old silver table Spoons, some crested ; five old silver salt Spoons, W.' on one ; three old silver egg Spoons ; a silver Skewer ; a silver pepper Box; a silver Top of sugar Bottle ; three dated dessert Knives and Forks, ivory handles ; a gold paper Knife, sword shape, about four inches long; a tea Caddy, dark wood, lined with scarlet velvet, with a glass sugar Basin and a small silver tea Spoon in it. Two tramps of the following description were seen looking round the house about 4 p. m. on the 3,0th ultimo, both about 30 years of age, one about 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stout, round face, very dark complexion, eyes, hair, and whiskers; dressed in dark clothes, and cap, and a down . cast look ; the other about 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, sandy hair and whiskers ; dressed in a blue coat, dark cap, and fustian trousers. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Carmarthen.— — Bow- street, September 5. The dwelling- house of Henry Stapley, at Mayfield, Sussex, was broken and entered, between 7 a. m. and 3 p. m. on the 29tli instant, and a red and dark mixture coloured shooting Coat, small pockets at each breast outside, one at each liip'outside, and one inside left flap, stolen therein. In- formation to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes, to Superintendent Peeriess, Uckfield, to Sergeant Avery, Court House, Mark Cross, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, August 31. bury.— Bow- street, September 2. - At about 4 p. m. on the afternoon of the 28th instant the dwelling- house of Mr. John Goodchild, farmer, of Keysoe, Beds., was entered, and the following property stolen therein : £ 6 in Gold and Silver; two gold Rings; a black Keeper Ring; twenty- six metal Spoons— twelve Dessert, four Table, eight Tea, two Salt ( lined with gold); a new pair of women's Boots ; a new pair of men's ditto ; a light Shawl; a black silk Jacket; two s; lk Pocket- handkerchiefs; a Watch Seal with red stone ; and a pair of Sugar Tongs. By a tramp, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair hair, small light whiskers ; dressed in blue jacket, dark trousers, and billycock hat; he carried a bundle. Information to be given to Superintendent Carruthers, Sharnbrook, Beds.— Bow- st., August 31. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded on the 22nd ultimo, embezzling £ 36 14s. 3d., the money of his master : a clerk, about 21 years of age, 5 feet inches high, fair complexion, and light brown hair ; he is generally dressed in light clothes ; has friends atthe Artillery Arms, Westminster, and Clarence Hotel, Oxford- street.— Metropolitan Police, Y Division, September 7. Absconded on the 31st ultimo, stealing from No. 3y Guildford- place, Guildford- street, six Table Spoons and six Forks, all plated : a servant, 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, and dark curly hair, parted behind ; dressed in dark coat and vest, brown trousers, and felt hat,;, his father resides at No. 30, Leman- street, Whitechapel.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 7. Absconded on the 2nd instant, from No. 59, Brushfield street, Spitalfields, stealing £ 2 3s. in Copper, the property of his master : a youth, 17 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair ; dressed in dark clothes, billy- cock hat, and blucher boots, all old.— Metropolitan Police, H. Division, September 7. Absconded since the 6th ultimo, from 32, Saville- row, St. James's, stealing a quantity of Cloth, and embezzling large sums of Money, the property of his employers, Messrs. Mont- gomery, drapers, & c.: CHARLES CLARKE, alias CHAS. JOHN AMBROSE CLARKE, alias CHARLES JOHN WILSON, alias JOHN AMBROSE, alias HUGHES, some- times describes himself as a solicitor, and also as CAPTAIN CLARKE, a journeyman tailor, 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 in" chei"; high, ruddy complexion, sandy hair, whiskers, and moustache, grey eyes, prominent teeth, a scar, two inches long in centre of forehead, sometimes wears glasses, inclined to be bald, has been in Melbourne, of smart appearance, respectably dressed. A warrant issued with Superintendent, C Division. — Metropolitan Police, C Division September 7. Absconded on the 23rd ultimo, stealing £ 210, the property of his employers Messrs. Moxon & Co., 44, Dover- street, Piccadilly : a man, 38 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair, turning grey, moustache probably shaved, a curious wen on left side of neck, nervous and hurried in manner ; dressed when last seen in brown walking coat, high black hat, flat rim. £ 10 reward.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, September 5. Absconded on the lst instant, stealing from Charing Cross Hotel, Strand : 80 Sovereigns, and a letter of Credit for £ 800, payable at Messrs. Lamb and Vaughan, 10, Angel- court, Throgmorton- street : a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion and hair, blue eyes'; dressed in grey suit, wears spectacles, speaks French, walks quickly, a North American.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, Sept. 5. Description of a man who absconded early on the morn- ing of the lst instant, stealing from the house of his master Mr. H. Hobley, of Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton, the son of £ 8 3s. 6d. He is a tramping shoemaker, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair, no whiskers, pale com- plexion, long features, an impediment in his speech, of very simple appearance ; dressed in an old brown coat with a light grey one underneath, blue worsted vest, dark brown speckled trousers, black patch behind and much too large, old elastic- side boots, dark mixture billycock hat with soft crown, and will be likely to frequent low lodging- houses or brothels. Information to be given to Superintendent Austin, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, September 5. Absconded on the 30th ultimo, from 96, St. John's- road, Hoxton, stealing £ 10 in Gold and Silver : a youth, 15 years of age, stout, fair hair and complexion; dressed in a white slop, cord trousers, and deerstalker hat. Known at Islington. — Metropolitan Police, N Division, September 2. ABSCONDED on the - 24th ultimo, stealing from 97, Church- street, Marylebone : a patchwork Quilt; a Counterpane ; a pair of Sheets ; three Blankets ; two pillow Cases ; a table Cloth; and a Towel: by a man and his wife, the first 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, dark complexion, hair, eyes, and moustache ; dressed in brown overcoat, dark trousers and vest, and black felt hat; the other 28 years of age, 5 feet 4 inehes high, dark complexion and hair ; dressed in light Cotton frock, black velvet jacket, and white bonnet.— Metro- j politan Police, D Division, September 2. Stolen from a bridge at Ormside, on the night of the 25th ultimo, a quantity of mason's Chisels, and a Hammer, which were sold at Penrith, on the 26th or 27th ultimo : by a man, who stated he was going to Carlisle, and had a Scotch Trowel in his pocket, which was stolen at the same time. He is about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, grey whiskers meeting under the chin, and stout built ; dressed in light grey coat, much torn, eord or moleskin trousers, patched down the front of thighs to the knees with grey cloth, old black billyeoek hat, and old clogs. Stolen from the Crown Hotei, at Sevenoaks, on the 30th ultimo : two pairs of patent goloshed side- spring Boots. / By a man, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fresh com- plexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers ; dressed in Oxford coat, trousers fitting tight to leg, and balmy hat, of gentle- manly appearance. Information to- be given to. Superinten- dent Colman, Police Court, Sevenoaks.— Bow- street, Sept. 2. Description of a tramping bricklayer, who is charged with having on the 30th ultimo, at Harbling, stolen from the dwelling- house of Elizabeth Sutton, 5 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' I. S. E.' underneath the handles, the E partly obliterated ; a white bone Comb, has small teeth at one end, and large ones at the other ; and a pair of Scissors, about ins. long. He is a native, of Leeds, Yorkshire, 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, black- hair and whiskers turning grey, swarthy complexion, swiugs one leg out when walking, has had his thigh broken, and has one of his elbows out of joint ; dressed in black billycock hat, grey jacket and vest, cotton cord trousers, and lace- up boots. Information to be given to' Superintendent Pidgeon, Bourn, Lincolnshire.— BoWrStreet, September 2. Absconded on the 27th instant, stealing from her master, a milliner, four calico Sheets, a Blanket, a flannel Petticoat, and a pair of Drawers : a servant, 40 years of age,* 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair and eyes ; dressed in brown cotton dress, black cloth mantle, and black bonnet. — Metropolitan Police, C Division, August 31. Absconded on the 27th instant, stealing £ 115s. belonging to his employer, a grocer : a porter, a native of Potten, Beds, 19 years of age, 5 feet high, sallow complexion, dark hair and eyes, thin face, large mouth, projecting teeth; dressed in reddish mixture shooting coat, black vest and trousers, side- spring boots with imitation buttons, blue necktie, and light deerstalker hat.— Metropolitan Police, L Division, August 31. Stolen from the house or John Roberts, at Dyliffe, Montgomeryshire : £ 2 in Gold and 7s. in Silver, on the morn- ing of the 24th instant, by a lodger, a tramping miner and a Welshman, is about 5 feet 9 inches high, 35 years of age, been a soldier, and has a yellow complexion, dark hair cut short, whiskers shaved off, with a tuft of hair under chin ; dressed in a dark monkey jacket, dark vest, and moleskin trousers, rough cloth cap with peak of same material and old elastic side boots, and is supposed to have gone to North Wales ; was seen at Towyn on the night of the 26th instant at a lodging house. Absconded in May last, charged with unlawfully disposing of a kquantity of Sacks : CHARLES TUCKER, 44 years of age, & feet 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, has lost one ey'Odressed in brown coat, tweed trousers, and felt hat ; supposed to be working in the Prince's Dock, Hull, Yorkshire. Warrant issued — Metropolitan Police, R Division, August 31. Absconded on the 3rd instant, charged on a warrant with stealing £: 5000 Peruvian consolidated 5 per cent. Bonds, of 1865 ; two Bonds of £ 1000, B 4424, 2533 ; six Bonds of £ 500, C 5682, 692Sj 4009, 4396, 5570, 5774 ; the property of Messrs. Baker and Sturdy, No. 32, Tlirogmorton- streeet: ARTHUR LYSANDER HALE, a clerk, late of 3, Pellett- road, Ben- hill, Sutton, Surrey, 18 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, light hair, grey eyes, fair complexion, slight figure, large feet, rather slovenly gait, and has a large mole on back of left hand ; had with him two small black bags. A reward of £ 100 will be paid to any person giving such infor- mation as shall lead to his apprehension and conviction, and a further reward of £ 200 will be paid on recovery of the Bonds, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Absconded on the evening of the 27th instant, from Llanidloes, charged on a warrant with stealing two Brushes and a joint Rule, CHARLES CREWE, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, - whiskers shaved off, and dressed in a grey monkey jacket, cord trousers and waistcoat, plaid eap with peak, and old lace- up boots ; and ALFRED HAWKINS, alias HOGGINS, about 21 years of age, abont 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow com- plexion, eyes rather weak, brown hair, no whiskers, a few long hairs on chin, and dressed in a white slop, patched on the slee. ves, moleskin trousers, light coloured waistcoat, plaid cap with peak, or a drab jimcrow hat, and lace- up boots ; said they belonged to Hereford, and tvere plasterers by trade. About 9 p. m op liia 27th instant, a counterfeit Half Sovereign was passec^ aVthe shop of Mr. Edward Badger, grocer, & c., Maindee, parish of Christchurch. By a man of the following description, betweiffl- 30 and 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, rather stout, dark complexion, dark brown hair, nearly black, da- rk whiskers, clipped rather short ; dressed in dark coat, buttoned up to the . neck, and high bja- ck hat. The ooia was Jiassid by substituting the counterfeit for a good half sovereign in giving change, or by what is known as ringing changes. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk, to Superintendeait Mcintosh, Pontypool, or to Inspector Sheppard, County Con- stabulary, Newport, Monmouthshire.— Bow^ street, August 31. .. COPLEY, a native of Maningham, Bradford, Yorkshire,_ clerk, and recently seeking employment ill bands at watering- places as a musician, is committed for trial, charged with larceny, and is supposed to have committed other offences : he is 31 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark complexion, small mous- tache, no whiskers or beard, brown hair, and hazel eyes. He is known to have been convicted of felony at the Flintshire Assizes, August 1868, aid also, in 1869 or 1870, of exposing his person at Croydon, Surrey, for which offence he under- went a sentence in Wandsworth Prison. The silk dress and jackets were recovered, having been pledged at Mr. Dickson's pawnshop, Penny- street, by ISAAC HOLROYD and CATHERINE PEARSON, who had been lodging at the house as man and wife, and absconded the day of the robbery.
