No. 4921 WEDNESDAY, AUOJJST. 3, 1870. - Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the purpose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or. stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MB. W. D. BURNARY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow Street, London, W. C. * Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any articlc in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must^ be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters ' and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, mav oe addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Description of two men charged with stealing on the highway from the person of J. Taylor, of Rosedale, on the night iW of the 22nd inst. : a wash leather Purse, ,£ 8 10s. in Gold, and 10s. in silver Coins : ROBERT SHAW, alias BOB RAGLAN, iron stone miner, 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches . high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers shaved off; dressed in blue jacket, moleskin vest and trousers, black and white striped woollen shirt, dark cap, and strong boots ; and YORKEY BOB, 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light complexion, light brown hair ; dressed in a pilot jacket and vest, woollen cord trousers, dark cap, a white muffler. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Huntingdon " Races, on the 19th instant, a double- bottomed gold lever Watch, jewelled in 4 holes, sunk seconds dial, engine- turned case, maker J. D. Stolen from the person of a man at Barrow, 011 the night of the 20th instant, a silver verge Watch, maker Laver, London, ' A. W.' engraved on inner case, a drawing of Noah's Ark 011 dial, and steel Chain attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Gwynne, Tarporley, Cheshire.— Boir- ft,-, ,1. July 27. Stolen from the person of DAVID EVANS, 011 the highway from St. George's to Oakengates, on the night of the 25th instant: an old verge Watch, the caps with a small part of the outer case was left, attached to the chain; also a tobacco Pouch, made of red dog skin; a, nd about £ 1 lis. in Money. Supposed by two men, from Staffordshire, who had been at a foot race. Stolen between 4' 45 and 5' 45 p. m. on the 23rd instant, from the person of a lady, at the London- road Railway Station, Manchester, or while going by rail to Marple : a lady's gold lever Watch, No. 1856, engine- turned face, flowered back ; and a short gold plated Guard, link pattern. BURGLARY AID HOUSE I BREAKING. Between 10 p. m. 011 the 31st ultimo, and 5 a. m. on the 1st instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Maurice Pritchard, of the Bryn, Llandyssil, Montgomeryshire, was broken and entered, and a pair of new half watertight Boots, nailed with five rows of small hob nails in the foreparts, squares in the heels, a double in the outside, and one hob nail in the centre of the heel, without eyelets, a loaf of Bread, recovered, and some cooked Mutton, stolen therein. By a youth, about 17 years of age, about 5 feet high, sandy freckled complexion; dressed in a dark jacket or slop, round woollen Scotch cap, with peak of the same material, cord trousers, and lace- up boots ; he is a native of Montgomery, and may be found about brickyards, mines, or some railway in the course of construc- tiqu. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to P. C. Rogers, Montgomery.— Bow- street, August 3. Stolen by means of housebreaking, Fulking, Sussex, on the 28th ultimo : i! ll 12s. 6d. ; a golcb keeper Ring ; a gold Brooch, with likeness of a man ; six silver Tea Spoons ; three silver Tea Spoons, marked ' S., a grey mixture Jacket; two Vests, one black, one grey ; a rough black Overcoat, velvet collar; and a yellow silk pdeket Handkerchief, with white spots. By a man who travels about as a jobbing gardener, about 60 years of age, 5 feet. 10 inches high, light complexion, nose crooked and pointed, slight make; dressed in an old velveteen jacket, cord trousers patched at knees, and hard felt hat. information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Peacock, Lewes, or to Sergeant Baldwin, Preston, near Brighton, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 1. The house of Dr. Branwell, 19, Montpelier- place, Brighton, was broken and entered between 12 midnight and 7 a. m. on the 31st ultimo, and stolen therein : a bronze Clock, with the figure of a child, holding a bird's nest; two silver napkin Rings, engine turtied, one engraved ' R. B.,' the other ' A. B.;' a linen table Cloth ; a green table Cover, with black flowers ; about 18 Knives, with ivory handles ; 18 plated Forks, crest — two hands, with a feather in each, some large and some small ; several polished agate Stones, various sizes and description ; and several Stones, in a rough state. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, August 1. Between 2 and 5 a. m., the 29th ultimo, the house of Michael Jolm Sullivan, 24, Burley- street, Leeds, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a gentleman's gold le'ver " Watch, cream- coloured dial, ' Sackville- street, ' Dublin,' engraved 011 the works; a lady's gold Chain, two silver Crosses, and a gold Locket attached ; a lady's silver Geneva Watch, No. 844; a round silver Brooch, set with French brilliants ; a light grey cloth slack- back Coat, black velvet collar, nearly new, a Vest to match ; a dark grey clotli slack- back Overcoat, two pockets outside, ahd one inside left breast, wijh black velvet collar ; a silk and wool mixture di'ese Goat, nearly new ; and a silver plated Snuff Box, the initials of ' J. A. S.' ( interwoven), engraved upon it. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from the house of Alexander Gater, Blakelow, Stapeley, between 2 p. m. and 8 p. m. on the 27th instant black cloth shooting C( jat", a little greasy on the collar and cuffs ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new ; and 15s. in Gold and Silver, effected by breaking open the back door. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Laxton, Police Office, Nantwich, Cheshire.— Bow- street, July 29. Further particulars respecting the burglary at the Parsonage, Lucker, Northumberland,, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 22nd instant. Property stolen : an Umbrella, a felt Hat, a Scotch Cap, a small silver Medal, a musical Box, 4 inches square, a Telescope, about 21 ins. long at full length, a large carving Knife with white ivory handle, a pair of Boots, some Bacon, and several other small articles. On the night of the 17th inst.,- a joiner's shop at Warenford, in the parish of Lucker, was entered, and a number of Tools stolen. On the night of the 20th instant, the parsonage at Kirk Yetholm, Roxburghshire, was entered, some of the joiners' Tools which were stolen from Warenford were left there, and the following articles were stolen : about £ 4 in copper Money : a gold scarf Pin, with pink- coloured stone, the pin runs through the stone, and is fixed with a small knob at the top ; a gold Pin with yellow stone, the stone fixed with claws ; a lady's gold Seal, with honey- coloured stone ; two silver Pencil- cases, one of them having a small stone in top ; a felt Hat ; an alpaca " Umbrella, round topped handle; a meerschaum Pipe, shaped like a pear, with brown amber mouthpiece ; a pair 6" f man's Boots, elastic sides, nearly new ; a canvas shot Bag, fastens with cord ; a pocket Knife, with brown handle ; and a small pocket Compass. Information to be given to the Chief Constable at Alnwick, Northumberland ; to the Chief Constable at Jedburgh, Rox- burghshire, or to Superintendent Marshall, Lowick, North- umberland.— Bow- street, July 29. plexion ; dressed in blue frock, a, black high- crowned felt hat ; he was traced nearly . to Goodwood, and then. had the . Mare in his possession, and was inquiring the way to the' racecourse. He is supposed to be the same man who • •' absconded from Stoughton Wedmore, Somerset, charged with horse stealing and described in the Police Gazette of the 1st instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, Dorking.— Bow- street, August 3. Stolen from High- gate, near Newtown, on the night of the 26th ultimo : a light- coloured she Ass, about 9 years old, has lately left her colt, cut mark on one thigh, turns one of her hind feet inwards, and was without shoes. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to John Lewis, Police Officer, Tregynon, Montgomeryshire. — Bow- street, August 1. Absconded from Stoughton, Wedmore, Somerset, charged with horse stealing, and was last seen at Reading, Berks, oil the 25th ultimo, where three of his accomplices were appre- hended, it is supposed that he will try to • emigrate to America, where he lived for some short time: ALBERT HURST, ajdrover, 21 years of age ( looks older), 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, a little dark whiskers at the side of face, speaks fast, and stammers a little, down looking, and slightly round shouldered ; dressed in black cloth jacket, vest, and trousers, the trousers fitting tight round the leg, black bowler hat, white shirt, blue neck- tie, and elastic- side boots. Information to be given to Super intendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary Office, Axbridge, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from a field at Allesley, the property of George Wright, farmer, on the 24th ultimo : three half- bred Tegs and eight Lambs, not marked. Information to be given to Super- intendent Austin, Nuneaton, or to Inspector Palmer, Foles- hill, Warwickshire.— Bov>- street, August 1. Stolen 011 the night of the 24th ult., from Penn Common, in the parish of Upper Penn, a dark brown mare Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, white star on the forehead, long mane and tail, and a white spot on the near side, the property of Wm. Monckton. Information to be given to Inspector Tomlinson, Sedgley, or to Police Constable Wright, Police Office, Upper Penn, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from a field at Kenilworth, during the night of the 28th ultimo, a half- bred blue roan Mare, aged, about 15 hands high, black mane and tail, two white hind fetlocks, a little white 011 one fore fetlock, star on forehead, very active, in good condition, and is supposed to have been taken through Coventry in the direction of Leicester early the next morning. Information to be given to Inspector Gallaway, Kenilworth. •— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from Snead's- green, in the parish of Elmley Lovett, between the 25th and 26th ultimo : a grey mare Pony, 9 years old, 14 hands high, very round in the back, large belly, short cut tail, and one knee chipped. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Stanton, Stourport, or to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen from a field near the Blind Asylum, Tipton- road, Dudley, on the night of the 25th instant, the property of W. J. Barnett, a grey Mare, about 15 hands high, aged, scar on the brisket from a recent kick, scar on the off hind leg, hair rubbed off by the girths of the saddle, short mane, long tail, and drops one ear when standing. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Borough of Dudley.— Bow- street, July 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing a Horse at High Maiden, Kent, on the night of the 10th ultimo, the horse has since been recovered, sold at High Wycombe, Bucks, by Read : JOHN READ, about 45 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, swarthy complexion, and one of his eyelids drops ; dressed in light jacket, light low- crowned hat, and tight fitting trousers. Is of costermonger appear- ance, was formerly a labourer working in a garden at Lsighton Buzzard, Beds, about 10 years ago, and has lately been living at Felgate- mews, Studley- street., Hammersmith, also at Croydon, Surrey ; he goes from town to town with a horse and large market cart, painted green, with the name of ' John Read, gardener, Leighton Buzzard,' written on it ; was last seen in the neighbourhood of London, with a cart load of Herrings, and is supposed to be in the country hawking the same. Information to be given to Superintendent Morgan, Cranbrook, Kent, who, holds the warrant for his apprehension. •— Bow- street, August 3. A man of the following description is charged with stealing the brown Mare from John Smith, at Dorking ( advertised in Police Gazette of the 1st instant) : about, 22 or 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, and sallow com- LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of RICHARD EASTLAND, charged on a warrant with stealing a Watch at Tunbridge Wells on the 23rd ultimo ( since found sold at Maidstone), about 18 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, light hair, fresh complexion, and good teeth ; dressed in grey mixture jacket with pockets on the hips, dark grey striped trousers, fitting tight, black billy- cock hat, old elastic- side boots, and old faded silk necktie ; is a tailor, and a native of Tunbridge, Kent, and .. is likely to seek work at tailors' shops in towns of Kent and Sussex. Information to be given to Chief Constable Embery, Town Hall, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow- street, August 3. Description of a man who is charged with stealing a Coat on the 7tli ultimo, on the morning of which day lie was dis- charged from Maidstone Gaol on the expiration of a sentence of six months' hard labour, for stealing a Coat at Tunbridge : a mulatto, 35 or 36 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, small eyes, broad fiat nose ; dressed in old brown ccat, dark mixture trousers, and cap with peak ; he had a prayer book and a card in his possession, both bearing the signature of the Rev. — Fraser, Chaplain of the Kent County Prison. When convicted he gave liis name as JAMES JONES, and stated that he resided in Praed- street, Paddington ; lie- is likely to be found in the neighbourhood of Westminster, the Borough, or at the east end of London, or at a low beershop or lodging house in Kent or one of the adjoining counties. He was apprehended on the present charge, and reminded f< rr a week, but no owner having been found for the stolen property, he was discharged on the 16th ultimo; he may be found in prison for vagrancy, as he gets bis living by tramping the country. Stolen from a cart at Marsh Gibbon, Bucks, ( luring the night of the 29th ultimo : a grey Overcoat, with black velvet collar, slate- coloured lining, pockets at the sides, aud worn at the cuffs. By a man 19 years of age, 5 feet. 5 or 6 inches high, sallow complexion, no whiskers, brown hair, and thin features ; dressed in a black round billycock hat, dark coat and vest, and corduroy trousers. Information to be given to Superintendent Shepherd, Steeple Claydon, Winslow, Bucks. — Bow- street, August 3. Stolen from the dwelling- house of James Ellershaw, Lancaster, on the lst instant, at 8' 30 a. m. : A new Geneva Watch and gold plated Chain ( chain pattern). By a man, about 23 years of age, but looks younger, about 5 feet 6 inches high, light complexion, swarthy, thin features, thin nose and lips, small eyes, no whiskers, of respectable appearance; dressed in a black cloth loose j& cket, light vest, light tweed trousers, Wellington boots, white shirt, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Pye, Borough Police Office, Lancaster.— Bow- street, August 3. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Middlesborough, on the 31st ultimo : a lady's brown leather Companion, shape of a barrel, 7 or & inches long, hooped round with white pearl, fixed with brass rivets, opens in centre with brass clasp, green lining, a. looking Glass at each end, one broken, contains a needle Case, a pair of Scissors, a scent Bottle, and a Comb, made o£ steel. Also stolen., from- a lodging- house on the 31st ultimo : an old striped brown and white woollen Shirt; a black and white striped Scarf, old ; a pair of cotton cord Trousers, narrow striped, fly fronts, dirty, have been washed-; a single breasted Waistcoat, of the same material, with white pearl buttons ; a pair of newly soled strong lace- up Boots, plain uppers, sprigs on soles ; and a red woollen Scarf, nearly new. By a labourer, 29 years of age, 5 feet 7J inched high, long dark curly hair, no whiskers or moustache, sharp nose, flesh mark on the same, between the eyes, has served in 13th Hussars, and is supposed to be dressed in the stolen clothes, as he left his old ones behind. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Saggerson, Borough Police Office, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, August 3. Stolen from a bedroom, at the Crown Hotel, Fletton, on the 30th ultimo; a lady's gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, engine turned case; a gold guard Chain attached, link pattern. By a man who slept there on the previous night, and left a^ 9' 45 a. m., supposed for London or Hitchin, about 50 years cjf age, o feet 8 inches high, large beard and mous- tache, slightly grey, speaks with a foreign accent ; dressed in a light mixture suit, elastic side boots, the soles- are nearly worn through, and high black hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Barker, Normancross, Peterborough.— Bow- street, August 1. Absconded from Sheffield on the 12th ultimo, charged with embezzlement : CHARLES GREEN, 30 years of age, 5 feet inches high, dark complexion, hair, whiskers, and moustache, brown eyes, and a bookkeeper; dressed in dark clothes and a black silk hat; is of smart appearance; has been in the army, and may try to enlist again. He formerly held a situation in Manchester, where he is believed to bewell known, and is very fond of frequenting Music Halls aud theatres. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Sheffield, who holds a warrant for his apprehension— Bow- street, August 1. Description of J. G. LOWE, a watchmaker, who absconded from Aldershot, about the 6th ultimo, charged with stealing a gold Watch, which had been entrusted to him to repair : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionately built, fair complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, and good looking ; dressed in a suit of black, and sometimes- wears a glengarry cap. He was in custody at Sevenoaks for a similar offence, about two years ago, and has recently been seen in the Goswell- road, London, in which neighbourhood he is supposed to be residing and working at his trade. Information to be given to Superintendent Troke, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 1. Description of a man charged with stealing 12 yards of Calico : a b'liie and white cotton Shirt ; If yards of light- coloured tweed Cloth ; also a white cotton Petticoat ; from a public- house where he had been lodging in Newport, Salop, on the night of the 26th ultimo. He is about 60 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stoutly made, stoops a great deal, walks slowly, and has pale complexion and grey hair ; dressed very shabbily in jimcrow hat, old lace- up boots, dark clothes; is very quarrelsome and generally lodges at low public- houses. He is supposed to be wearing the stolen shirt, and had a small bundle in a red coloured cotton handkerchief, representing himself as being a gardener, and is familiar with the names of many gardeners, having travelled about for years. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, August 1. Stolen on the 27th ultimo, from the dwelling- house of Samuel Sweeting, labourer, at Leavesden, near Watford, the sum of £ 75 in Gold. By a man, 40 years of age, tall, dark complexion, moustache, and whiskers ; dressed in dark clothes, and wore a black Albert chain. Information to be given to Superintendent Isgate, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, August 1/ Stolen on the 27th instant, at the Crawley Arms public- house, Fulliam- road, the property of a lodger : a gold f- plate lever Watch, compensation balance, patent winding hour circle. No. 26185, maker ' Dent, 33, Cockspur- street, on dial, engraved monogram ' INPH' on the back ; an open cu. rb Chain, 18 carat stamped on links, weight three ounces, with small gold Dice Box, Compass, and Horse Shoe attached. By a lad,- 16 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion; dressed in dark suit and straw hat with black ribbon.— Metro- politan Police, B Division, July 29. Stolen on the 26tli instant, from No. 7, Stanley- street, Chelsea : eleven gold Rings ( one opal and eight diamonds, one cluster diamonds, one snake, coral head, ruby eyes, one pearl and coral, one turquoise, one enamel and two diamonds, one band with two pearls and turquoise, one filagree with buckle, one signet with crest, one plain with white stone, one cluster of turquoise); a gold Geneva hunting Watch, gilt Chain attached, five gold Charms and a 4d. Piece; a gold Brooch, blue enamelled, with cross of pearls, on reverse side a likeness of a gentleman ; a broad gold snake Necklet, with three Lockets pendant, one gold and coral, one black, with gold anchor, one red, green, and white enamelled, ' AEI.' By a youth, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair com- plexion, red hair ; dressed in black cutaway coat, black < vest, small check trousers, black hat with mourning band ; was formerly a medical student, and has been in custody at Bow- street Police Station for forgery— Metropolitan Police, B Division, July 29. Description of JOSEPH McKAY, engine- fitter, charged 1 eyes, dark whiskers on point of chin, one or two teeth out in oil a warrant with stealing from the person at Leominster, on the 9th instant, a Tobacco Box, and .£ 1 5s. 9d.: he is about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very fair com- plexion, little or no whiskers, light hair cut short, round- shouldered, bow- legged, and turns his toes in when walking ; front, marked with the letter ' D.' on left breast; dressed in white button- over jacket, very dark moleskin trousers, greasy in front of thighs, dark cap with flaps turning up at the sides, and lace- up boots ; he was discharged from the Military Train about 18 months ago, and has a relative in the Royal Marines .,+ ... il. 1 - j. Superintendent Ross, County Consta- bulary, Wiveliscombe, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 1. trousers, elastic- side boots with imitation lace- up fronts, broad brimmed black bowler hat ; he took with him a black cloth jacket, and a pair:' of broad ribbed bedford cloth trousers. He has a relative forking- in the engine- fitting department at the Britannia Works, Birkenhead; and another at the railway sheds, Oswestry. He is supposed to have a wife at Wolverhampton. Information to be given to Superintendent Johnson, Borough Police Office, Leominster, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, July 29. Description of GEORGE SANDS, alias PERKS, and JOHN SHAW, both ironstone miners, who absconded from Brotton- in- Clevland, Yorkshire, 011 the 24th instant, charged on a warrant with committing a violent assault on Police Constables Newbigin and Moll, at Brotton, on the 24th inst. : Sands is 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, light brown hair, whiskers shaved off, grey eyes, has a peculiar look with right eye, slender build, dirty appearance ; dressed in brown skull cap, fustian jacket, vest, and trousers, and strong navvy boots : he came out of Northallerton Gaol on the 20th instant, having been there one month for assaulting the same two constables. The other about the same age and height ; dressed in a suit of black cloth clothes and cap. They left near the house a pair of clogs, one has a clasp, the clasp of the other is broken.
