" » * Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with tbe Vdvertisement, forwarded to tbe Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the t'OLICE GAZETTE, All Letter* addressed to the Editor annst be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It Is requested that the NameB and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- During tbe night of the 5th instant, the Hermitage p. t Dunkeld was forcibly broken into, and a barrel of gunpowder placed and exploded therein, whereby the whole ot it has been destroyed. A reward of £ 100 shall be paid to any person who will give such information to the Procurator- Fiscal or to the Chief Constable of Perthshire, as shall lead to the convic- tion of the offender or offenders, aud a free pardon shall be granted to an accomplice who is not the actual perpetrator or instigator.— Bow- street, September 17. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Further particulars respecting the Watch stolen from the person at Weymouth Races, advertised in the Police Gazette i f the 6th inst.: the maker is Dobell, Yeovil, No. 6667. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Hare, Dorchester, or to Superintendent Smith, Yeovil.— bow- street, September 20. Stolen from the person of Miss Emma Collier whilst entering a first class railway carriage on the 14th instant, at the Newport Railway Statiou ( by cutting her pocket) : a dark green Purse with elastic baud, coutaining £ 2 in Guld and 3s. or 4s. in Silver and Copper ; two Watch Keys, one of which is used as a guard against winding a waicn up the wrong way ; and a small Indian Coin. By a young man, about 6 feet 2 inches bigh, pale sharp features, no whiskers, thin make ; dressed in dark brown jacket and high crowned hat, had the appearance of a jockey, carried a satchel or saddle bag in his hand of a brown cob ur. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop.— Bow- street, September 17. Stolen from the person of a farmer, at Ormskirk Fair, on the llth instant: six £ 5 Bank of England Notes, dated Liver- pool 4th May, 1868, Nos. 64001, 561,02, 66003 56004, 66b05, and 56006, the notes numbered 56( 102 and 55006 have been recovered, having been passed at Ormskirk by a man named CHARLES BARRACLOUGH, who is in custody, and aman of the following detciiptiou : from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 iuches high, stout built, dark complexion, dark hair and whiekers; dressed in a blue pilot cloth overcoat, with velvet collar, dark trousers, black silk hat, and leather leggings ; can be identified. Information to be given at tbe Constabulary Office, Ormskirk, Lancashire.— Bow- street, September 17. Absconded from his lodgings, at Peterborough, on the 12th instant, charged wi> h stealing, from tbe person of Samuel Vergette, a silver lever hunting Watch, No. 1761, with a black steel Chain and brass Key attached : a man, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, proportionate figure, pale com- plexion, grey bair and moustache, no whiskers, walks erectly, says he has been a soldier, and that be has a pension ; dres ed in a white jacket, pockets outside, aud white covered buttons, dark waistcoat with grey spots, dark cloth trousers, very greasy about the knees, black howler hat with white buckle, and old lace up boots, with toecaps, patched on outside. Information to be given to Superintendeut Brooke, Constabulary Office, Peterborough, Northamptonshire.— Bow- street, September 17. Abfconded on the llth uliimo, from Crofthead, Linlith- gowshire, charged with assault and robbery on the previous night, in company with auother miner, named PETER CROSSAN, now in custody : WILLIAM GRANT, a miner and seaman, belongs to Dairy, Ayrshire, of Irish parentage, mixed Irish and Scotch dialect, 24 to 26 years of age, 5 feel 6 or 7 inches high, b'ack hair cut short, black thin wbiskers and moustache, believed latterly shaved off, thin cheeks, pale complexion, slender make, smart, ra'ber good looking, and has the apptaraoce of a sailor ; dressed iu daik cap with peak, dark jacket with velvet collar, loose make, aud short skirts, blue slop or guernsey for vest, dark cloth trousers, and elastic- side boots ; likely to be found in a mining district, or at some of of the seaports where coal and iron are shipped. A sheriff's warrant has been gran ed for his apprehension. Information to he given to the Chief Constable, Linlithgow.— Bow- street, September 15. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking from William Brooks, in the parish ot Teston, between 2 and 3 30 p. m. on the 15th instant: 7 silver Tea Spoons— five were marked ' W. S. B.'; 2 gold Wedding Rings ; a silver Pencil Case; a round silver Strainer ; 2 Half- Sovereigns ; some Silver and Coppers; and 2 foreign Coins. Also from the house of Eliza Thompson, on the same date, a gold Wedding Ring ; a silver do. ; a small gold Brooch ; a blue monkey Jacket, since pawned at Maidstone : by a man who gave tbe name of J. Stowbridge, from 20 to 25 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, light complexion, little or no whiskers, very slightly built ; dressed in dark eoat and round felt hat ; of very respectable appearance. Information to be given to Superintendent Hulse, Kent County Constabulary, Police Court, West Malling.— Bow- st., Sept. 20. During the night of the 16th instant, the rectory at Stretton- on Fosse, Warwickshire, was bioken and entered, aLd stolen therein, the property of the Rev. C. Causton: a silver Inkstand, with mouogram ' CHC' and ' JDH' inscribed thereon ; a silver Top of a small inkstand ; £ 2 in Gold ; about £ 3 in Silver and Copper: a wooden Pipe, mouied with silver ; aud a small quantity ot Tobacco. Supposed by two men : one about 40 years of sge, 6 feet 10 inches nigh, thin face, and dark whiskers ; dressed in a long brown coat, dark trousers, and round hat, and walked a little lame: the other about 28 yeais of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slight moustache; dressed in dark coat and trousers and round hat. They are supposed to be the same men who were advertised in the Police Gazette in the months of April and May last, for committing burglaries in the counties of Northampton, Berks, Bucks aud Gloucester. Information to be given to Superintendent Thompson, Police Station. Shipston- on- Stour, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, Sep- tember 20. Between 5 30 a. m. and 9 30 p. m. on the 16' h instant, the dwelling house of Thomas Powell, at Grittlesend, in the parish of Cradley, was broken into, and stolen therein : a new suit of black Clothes, with small white specks on it, the jacket sloped off in fr> nt of skirts ; a grey Jacket, with dark buttons; a calico Shirt, nearly new ; a new jimcrow Hat ; two silk Hand- kerchiefs, one black and the other stuped red, black, and brown ; a blue and white plaid bundle Handkerchief; a pair of new elasiic Braces; 14s or 16s. in Silver ; a small loaf of Bread ; about 2$ lbs. of Cheese ; and a small piece of Bacon. By two tramps, one about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches bigh, thin make, and supposed to be dressed in the stolen new suit, and hat, an old j cket and hat were left behind ; he carries a bundle which is supposed to be tied up in the stolen blue and white bundle handkerchief; the other is about 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, stiff built, and wearing the stolen grey jacket. Information to be given to Superintendent Harwood, Church street, Bromyard, or to Sergeant Troyton, Police Station, Cradley, near Great Malvern, Herefordshire.— Bow- Ureei, S'pumber 20. During the night of the 14th Instant, the dwelling- houses of Isaac Webb and Frances Bunnett, in the parish of Stutton, Suffolk, were broken and emered, and stolen therein : six plain silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J ^ .;' a small silver Mug, with handle ; a pair of plated Sugar T<> ngs ; a Cash B ix, containing six small silver buttons, • Y. R.' on them ; a black Brooch, ' Ann Shaw, Ryl,' scratched on back ; two gold Seals; a pair of black bead Bracelets; a pair of Wellington Boots, recently clumped, and slit at the top ot each leg ; a Great Eastern j Railway Guard's Coat, old. Supposed by tramps. Informa- tion to be given to the Police at Holbrook, East Suffolk.— Bow- streU, September 20. About mid day on the 15th inst., the cottage of W. Jones, labourer, of Twll, in Guilsfield, was broken into by tramps, and a pair of cotton cord or r'bbed Trousers, lined with calico, metal buttons, tbe pockets and tbe lining of the fall of m< le- skin, and a small hole torn at inside of left knee, stolen therein. Information to be given to Superintendent Strefford, Welsh- pool, or to Police Constable Thomas, Guilsfield, Montgomery- shire.— Bow- street, SepUmber 17. Stolen on the 15th instant, by breaking and entering the houses of Henry Humphery and Richard Buss, at Nettlestead: a gold wedding Ring ; a gold keeper Ring snake pattern; two Brooches, one with gold traine, one witn g ' Id across the stone; a silver Watch, the bow broken off; some Postage Stamps ; a silver Watch, maker French, Yalding, glass broken out ; and an old toreign Coin. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Hulse, Kent Constabulary, West Malling, Kent.— Bow- street, September 17. Stolen between 6 25 and 7' 40 p. m. on the 12th instant, from a dwelling- house in Stockport : 12 Tea Spoons, a pair of Sugar Tongs, four pairs of Salt Spoons, six Dessert Spoons, and six Table Spoons, all silver, not marked ; a silver Cream Jug, marked ' J. S. W. ;' a g ' Id Hoop, inlaid with fine white pearls, with a piece of glass inside ; a pair of child s Boots ; and a pair of i' en's elastic- fine Boots A pair of old elastic- side Boots, with clumped soles, were left behind. Entrance effected by u locking the front door. £ 5 reward will he paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction ot the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, on application to Chief Superintendent Moores, Stockport, Cheshire.— Bow- street, Sptemher 15. During the night of the llth instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Webster, butcher, Chesterfield, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a new light brown Shawl, with large squa es in centre, black striped border, with silk fringe; and a black silk Dress, bishop's sleeves, trimmed with ruche down back of sleeves, round the wristbands, and down tbe front of body, with drab lining. Supposed by two men : one 35 years of age, about 6 feet 8 inches high ; dressed in a dark brown cloth suit and black bat : the other Bbout the same age and height ; dressed in a blue cloth coat, corduroy trousers, and soft billycock hat. Information to be given to Chief Superin- tenden Farndale, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, Sep- tember 15. Stolen by means of housebreaking, on the 1st instant, at Charlwood, the property of Thomas Deuman : an old- fashioned pair- case silver Watch, No. 1400, large size. By a man, about 30 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark complexion and hair, rather stout, and had the appearance of a shoemaker. Information to be given to Superintendent Page, Dorking, or to Inspector Hibberd. Surrey Constabulary Station, Reigate.— — Bow- street, September 15. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Further particulars respecting the dark bay Gelding stolen from Amersham ( advertised in the Police G- zette of the 16th instant): three men ( one about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, rather stout, and dressed in a dark speckled coat and black billycock hat; another about 6 feet 6 or 6 inches high, wearing a light coat and black billycock bat; and the other about 6 feet 6 or 7 incher high) were seen between 9 and 10 p. m. of the llth instant on the premises of Mr. Crouch, and were traced to Uxbridge with the horse. A reward of £ 5 will be paid by the Amersham Property Protection Society on the recovery of the horse, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Moore, Chesham, Bucks.— Bow- street, September 20. Further particulars respecting the bay Horse advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th instaut as stolen from tbe Old Wairy Farm on Northchurch Common, and for the recovery of which and conviction of tbe offender or offenders a reward of £ 10 was offered. A man of tbe following description is suspected : 40 years of age, about 6 feet high, square built, brown hair, moustache, of slovenly appearance, like a haggle carter or low horse dealer, acd goes about the country with a pony and cart attending fairs. Information to be given to Superintendent Coulter, Gieat Berkhamsted, Herts.— Bow- street, September 20. The brown Mare, snd grey Gelding, stolen from Hastings, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th July last, have been recovered.— Bow- street, Sepumbcr 20. Stolen about 3 pm. on the 10th instant from a stable, a chesnut Mare, aged, 16 hands high, hind legs and face white, and carries her tail on one side. Information to be given to Chief Constable Wilson, Town Hal), Durham,— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen batween 8 and 9 pm. on the 15th instant, from Camer Lodge, in the parish of Meopham, near Giavesend, a black gelding Pony, aged, about 12 hands high, white saddle mark, scar on left cheek, long tail, and in good condition, with brass mounted Harness and a small light spring Cart, painted brown, with the name ' Henry Bishop, grocer, Meopham,' was taken away while standing at the lodge gate. Information to be given to Supeiinteudent Merritt, Chatham.— Bow- street, September 20. Stolen from Sutton Park about the first week in August, four Heifers, two 2 year olds and two yearlings, one grizzle- coloured, the others red and white, and each had ' W. H.' and tbe park mark on one horn, tbe property of Mr. Wm. Hodgetts, of the Greyhound Inn, New Oscott A reward of £ 10 will he paid by the Sutton Coldfield Association for the Prosecution of Felons to any person ou whose iutorma- tion the offenders shall be apprehended and eonvicted. Infor- tion to be given to Depu'y Chief Constable Bloxham, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bute- street, September 20. Description of a man charged with stealing a Pony from Mildenhall, near Marlborough, the property of Mr. Large, on the 4th instant, which he sold at Ramsbury, and has since been recovered : he is a native of Melbourn, Derbyshire, enlisted at Nottinfham, on 13th of January, 1868, 29 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, a nail maker ; was discharged from the 69th Regiment of Foot on the 13th July last with ignominy, and is marked with four D's, and the letteis B C ; dressed in a pair of dark cloth military trousers, dark waistcoat, and an old dark mixture shooting jacket, with several pockets. Has worked in Berkshire as a labourer, and may be found in some low public or lodging- house, spending the money which he received for the Pony. Information to be given to Superintendent Stretton, Marlborough, Wilts, who holds a warrant for hia apprehension.— Bou- nreet, September 20. Stolen from the Freemen's Commons about the 9th July last, a dark brown Welsh cob Horse, about 9 years old 14$ hands high, black legs, plain head, blai. k shod, throws the forettet rather wide, heels aud ears clipped out. A reward of £ 6 will be paid for the apprel ensign and conviction of the offender and recovery of the horse. Description of a tramping watchmaker who left Studley, Warwickshire, ahout March last, and is charged with stealing a Watch, which has been recovered, the property of Richard Green, of Studley : he is about 35 years of age, about 5 itei 7 inches hi* h, dark complexion, light brown hair, inclined to curl ; dress- d in a blue cloth coat aud waistcoat, dark mixture trousers, much worn, and a black billycock hat. lie is sup- posed to he a native of Coventry. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of a man named JAMES ARTHUR HEBRON, a_ clerk in the post- office, who is charged with stealing £ 9 t7*. Id., the property of Thomas G. Sheldon, hia master: he is 22 years of nge £ feet 4 or 5 inches high, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair.
