CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir cases jf Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, replied Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those tvho are not known, l. r. ir Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and ecoverina them. No. 4543 MONDAY, MARCH 2, 1868. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving nformation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person > requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As ao charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Ma London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING- ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING- Description of a man, named ROBERT HUGHES, alias ROBIN TYGWYRTHIN, a labourer, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charged with arson : he is about 29 years of age, 6 feet 6 ijchea high, brown hair and whiskers meeting under the chin, fresh complexion, small eyes, has a brother named Owen Hughes, a stonemason, living at Pen- y- groes, Llanllyfni, Carnarvonshire, with whom he has occasionally worked, and has also been working at Bethesda and Festiniog Quirries. Information to be given to Superintendent 0< ven, Police Office, Holyhead, Anglesey.— Bow- street, February 24. FORGERY. Absconded from Greenock about'the 24th ultimo, charged with forgery and uttering: ALLAN M'LAINE, a native of Argyleshire, about 42 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout make, swarthy complexion, black hair, buBhy black whiskers all round chiD, round- shouldered, io- toed, takes short steps in walking, has a downcast look, and speaks with a High- land accent ; usually dresses in a black cloth walking coat, dark tweed trousers, blue topcoat, soft b'ack felt hat, and occasionally a black dress hat with cloth band ; he is a dyke builder by trade, but has been in business as a boot and shoe maker in Greenock for the last eight or nine years, he has also had a boot and shoe shop in Rothesay for some time past. His wife and children left Greenock per steamer lor Belfast on the 28th ultimo; his wife is a native of Mull, Argyleshire, has brown hair, is tall, and rather delicate- looking. Information to be given to Robert Blair, Esq, Procurator Fiscal, or to Superintendent Dewar, Police Chambers, Greenock.— Bow- street, February 28. / ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of Mr. Shaxby, at Canterbury, on the 6th instant, a silver Geneva open face Watch, No. 6350, with a piece of gold Albert attached. Information to be given to Superintendent Davies, Canterbury.— Bou>- street, Feb. 24. Description of two men charged with highway robbery, near Bayston Hill, Salop, on tbe 26th it. sunt: one is about 6 feet 3 or 4 inches high, red complexion, with moustache and large whiskers under chiD, marked with smallpox ; dressed in a moleskin jacket, a cloth cap without peak, of very dirty appearance, and appeared to walk very lame ; the other was without shoes and stockings. Infoimation to be given to Superintendent Caswell, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, Feb. 28. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 9 and 12 a. m. on the 29th ultimo, the dwelliDg- house of Charles Weston, at Knowle Hill. Egham, was forcibly entered, and the following property stolen therein : an old- fashioned double- case silver Watch, with flint glass, maker James Bishop, London, No. 700 ; 26s. 6d. in Silver; 2 cotton pocket Handkerchiefs, one red with white spots ; and a child's Telescope. Supposed by a tramp, between 30 and 40 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, and black moustache ; dressed in a short tweed jacket, tweed trousers, and old cloth cap. In- formation to be given to Superintendent, Murtell, Surrey Con- stabulary, Cheitsey.— Bow- street, March 2. Between 1030 p. m. on the 27th, and 7 a. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of D. Bowan, surgeon, Stret- ford- road, Old Trafford, was buglariously entered and the following property stolen therein : 1 brown morocco case, con- taining white hafted Knives, a Saw, and the usual surgical instruments ; 1 red morocco C ase, containing surgical Knives, a set of Catheters, a set of Bistouries, white handles, some curved, others straight, two silver Speculums, a Clim with gilt ends, and several Lancets and Knives, most of the above were made by ' Wood.' Irformation to be given to the Superin- tendent of Police, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, March 2. Between 10- 30 p. m. on the 28th and C a. m. on the 29th ultimo, a dwelling- house at Withington was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein : an electro- plated Claret Jug, white ivory handle, marked ' B. ;' a ditto Sugar Basin, marked 4 B. a pair of ditto Sugar Tongs, marked ' Li.;' a Timepiece, gold and green case, stands on four feet, maker Hall, King- street, Manchester; a scarlet and yellow damask Tablecover ; a blue pilot reefer Overcoat; a black cloth Overcoat, large size, two pockets in skirts outside, and one inside left breast; a mixure Und- rcoat, reefer pattern, bound with black braid ; three white damask Tablecovers ; two unbleached ditto, spotted pattern ; a pair of white calico Sheets, large size, nearly new; a pair of men's Wellington Boots, nearly new ; a pair of elastic 6ide ditto, nearly new ; and a pair of strong lace- up ditto, nearly new. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, County Constabulary Station, Old Trafford, near Manchester— Eow- strect, March 2. On tbe afternoon of the 24th instant, the dwelling- house of Robert Elyard, of West Winch, labourer, was broken and entered, and the following property was stolen therein : a black cloth Coat, pockets behind, and a grease spot on the right arm, a black cloth Waistcoat, motheaten under the collar, a mixed cloth frock Coat, with pockets outside, a mixed cloth Waistcoat, and a pair of light worsted cord Trousers. Information to be given to Police Constable Feek, West Winch, or to Superintendent Seaman, Terrington, near Lynn, Norfolk.— Bow- street, February 28. Between 10 a. m. and 4- 30 p. m. on the 24th instant, the dwelling- house of Robert Shepherd, of Sutton, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : a black Dress Coat, two pockets left side, one rij ht side, black buttons ; a grey cloth Vest, cloth back, black buttons ; a pair of grey cloth Trousers, stripe down side, small piece let in on each side of waistband; a grey cloth Jacket, lined with horse sheeting, two pockets outside, one inside; a pair of woollen cord Trousers, fall fronts ; three white cotton Shirts, one with linen breast and Deck ; a pair of men's half Boots, eight holes each side, quite new ; a pair of women's ditto, laced. Supposed by three men of the following description, who slept in Thirsk Union the previous night, and were seen near the house : one was 44 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, and bald ; dressed in a dirty black cloth suit and cloth cap ; another S' 2 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, sallow complexion, slender make, dark brown hair, and dressed in a dirty cloth suit ; and the other is 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, fresh complexion, stout make, dark brown hair, and dressed in dirty black suit, much worn ; they stated that they were painters, and were making for Saltburn- by- the- Sea. Two pairs of old boots were found in a plantation upon Hambleton Hills, supposed to have belonged to the offenders. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Howard, Northallerton, or to Inspector Smith, North Riding Constabu- lary, Thirsk.— Bow- street, February 28, Between 10 p. m. 21st and 8 a. m. on the 22Dd instant, the dwelling- house of Hannah Greenwood, a widow, of Sowerby- bridge, was entered through the cellar grate, and the following property stolen therein : a pair of women's new elastic side kid Boots, a pair of youth's new dark mixture cloth Trousers, fly fronts, black metal buttons, stamped ' Kershaw, Hebden- bridge,' a black French merino scarf Shawl, with silk fringe, and back stitched round the border. Supposed by a man, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slender built, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark brown hair, moustache and tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in black cloth shooting coat, fustian trousers and vest, lace- up boots and clogs, and will seek employment at foundries. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Copeland, West Riding Constabulary, Halifax, York- shire.— Bow- street, February 26, Between 11 p. m. the 21st and G a. m. the 22nd instant, the dwelling- house of George Hattersley, of Staveley, was entered by taking a pane of glass out of the kitchen window, and drawing the fastener, and the following property stolen therein; a black cloth Overcoat, cloth covered buttons; a blue pilot Overcoat, black velvet collar ; a grey mixture cloth Suit ; a striped woollen Shirt ; a cotton Shirt; three pairs of lambswool Stockings •, two pairs of worsted Stockings, marked ' W. H.' a walking Cane, silver hook, and buckhorn handle ; a scent Bottle, silver top ; a brown mixture Inverness Cape ; a pair of man's lace- up Boots, brass eyelet holes ; a pair of elastic side Boots ; two Hats; a colour Box ; and a Box ef Drawing Instruments. The offender or offenders will be wearing some of the stolen property, he having left his own clothes and other articles behind, consisting of the following : a fustian shooting coat, repaired scross the shoulders with corduroy, ragged rnd torn on sleeves and back, a pair of fustian leggings, straps and white bone buttons, a pair of dark mixture trousers, torn at knees and seat, white thread down the sides, a pair of strong lace- up boots, a hammer, chisel and hand saw, also two cloths, which are supposed to have been stolen, one has a blue stripe with tea cloth and three stars on each side worked down tbe centre, the other has a red stripe with glass cloth, and stars on each side worked in white down the centre, both marked in ink ' J. D. Hargreaves.' Information to be given to Captain Orrashy, West Riding Constabulary, Knares- borough.— Bow street, February 26. Between 2 ar. d 6 a. m. on the 21st inst., thejdwelling- house of Edwin Stippisley, Esq., Wells, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : three electro- plated Salvers, two silver Tea Spoons, marked ' S. P. R. ;' a Table Spoon, three Tea ditto, silver ; a silver Butter Knife. marked ' E. H.;' a silver Cream Jug, with the inscription ' Presented to Edwin Stippisley by the Rev. W. Bennett.' Information to be given to Deputy Constable Bloxham, Somerset Constabulary, Glastonbury, or to Sergeant Tucker, Wells.— Bow- street, February 24. Description of THOMAS JACKSON, alias GINGER, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charged with having, on the night of the 25th ultimo, feloniously broken into a lockup shop in the parish of Llanwchllyn, in the county of Merioneth, and stolen therein three Cheeses, two bundles of worsted Stockings, each bundle containing twelve pairs, and about 4 lbs. of Tobacco, in packages, ' W. O. Wills * on the paper : about 26 years of age, 5 feet 8 to 10 inches high, full fresh face, red curly hair, red whiskers and moustache; dressed in cord trousers, dirty twilled loose slop, black cloth cap with peak, navvy boots, and red twilled neckerchief; he is a navvy, and is supposed to have gone to work on the Central Wales Railway in South Wales, in the Sugarloaf Tunnel, or on some public works about Cardiff, where he is supposed to be knowD. Information to be given to Inspector Hughes, Bala, Merionethshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Fonnd at Arnold, Notts., supposed to have been stolen, on the 26th January last, a bay nag Colt, rising 4 years old, 14 hands high, long tail, white mark on the bottom of nose, small white mark on the back of chine, a few white hairs on the forehead, black feet, shod all round, appears very quiet, and not to have been worked ; also found at Clifton, Notts, in the latter end of November last, two white Heifers, about 2 years old. Information to be given to Superintendent Palethorpe, County Police Station, Nottingham.— Bow- street, March 2. Stolen on the night of the 26th ultimo, or early the following morning, from a field at Balsall Common, a half bred bay Mare, C years old, 161 hands high, long mane and tail, saddle marks, and black legs, has a large head, and a sprain in the off forefoot ; the property of Mr. Eli Elson Berkeswell. £ 6 reward will fie paid to any person or perso who will give such information as will lead to the appre- hension of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Elson, or to Inspector Welch, Solihull, Warwickshire. — Bow- street, March 2. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Cressage, Salop, on or about the 17th instant, ten Shropshire Down yearling Ewes, marked with a round hole in right ear, the property of Mr. John Preece, of Cressage, farmer; £ 6 reward will be paid by the said John Preece, for the apprehension and conviction of the offender < r offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, County Const- tbulary Office, Shrewsbury, to Sergeant Turner, Police Station, Much Wenlock, or to Police Constable George, Cressage, Salop.— Bow- street, February 26. Stolen on the night of the 21st instant, from a field adjoining Kirkstall Abbey, near Leeds, a dark bay Mare, 15^ hands high, has a curb on the fore hind leg, and long rough hair : a gipsy party was encamped in the neighbourhood on the night she disappeared. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, Feb. 26. Stolen from a field at Baginton, near Coventry, on or about the 17th ultimo, a half- bred buy Mare, 6 years old, 17 hands high, black legs, white star on face, rather drooping ears, bang tail, and hocks slightly capped, and has a peculiar j irking of the head when standing, and often when being ridden. £ 8 reward will be given by the Coventry Association for the prosecution of felons, upon the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Gallaway, Warwickshire Constabulary, Kenilworth.— Bow- street, Febuary 24. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT- Stolen from the dwelling- house of Joseph Lawton, in the borough of Hanley, on the 22nd ultimo, a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new, and a black cloth double brea- ted Vest, — by a man, who had been lodging in the house, about 26 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, dark hair, no whiskers, black moustache, dark complexion, middle size, the right leg and foot smaller than the left, and walks with a crutch, swings the lame leg when wilkiDg; supposed to be a painter and gilder of china by trade, information to be given to Super- intendent Baker, Constabulary Office, Hanley, Staffordshire.— — Botcstreel, March 2. Stolen from the Bricklayer's Arms public house, Whit- stable, between 9 p. m. on the 29th ultimo and 10 a. m. on the lst instant, a nearly new blue striped Shirt, a piir of flannel Drawers, a pair of white cotton Stockings, a blue cotton Handkerchief, a Sovereign and a Shilling : the property of Mr. William Buck ; by a man of the following description, who lodged in the house, and who left Whitstable, at about 8 a. m. on the lst instant: about 33 or 34 years « f age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair oomplexion, light sandy hair and 2 JP O LI C E GAZETTE March 2. whiskers ; dnssed in dark overcoat, drab cloth trousers, and a feniau hut. information to be given to Superintendent Walker, Kent County Constabulary, Canterbury.— Bow- street, March 2. Stolen from the South Barracks, Walmer, at about 8 p. m. on the 22ud ultimo, the following property of Lieut. Rogers, 102nd Foot.: 2 nearly new regimental Tunics, blue facings, ' 102nd on buttons. 1 Pea Jacket, lined with white silk. 1 blue cotb Waistcoat, with gold lace beading, for mess. 2 pairs of regimental Trousers. 1 sedskin Waistcoat. 1 pair of black and white Trousers, with black stripes down. 1 pair of brown and black check Trousers. 1 pair of greyish speckled striped Trousers. 1 i air of grey Troupers. 1 pair of brown Trousers, with Coat to match. 1 light greyish Coat, and double breasted Waistcoat. 1 crimson regimental Sash. 1 pair of button Boots. 1 pair of brown cloth Boots. 2 pairs of patent leather B ots. 2 pairs of tioots, with India- rubber sides. 1 pair of Boots, light brown tops. 1 pair of Boots, kid tops. 1 pair of light brown fancy Slippers. Several Shirts, Collars, and fla. mel Shirts, most of them marked ' J. E. Rogers' in ink. By a private of the 102nd Foot, servant to Lieut. Rogers, 26 years of age. 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, enlistod at Chatham, iu Marcti. 1803, supposed to be a Dutchman, and a compositor, will p. obahly be accom- panied by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, Bandy whiskers, has for some time resided in Dover, and both will probably be wearing some of the stolen articles. The wife of the latler person is in custody charged with receiving some of the property stolen on the occasion referred to. Description of CHARLES CAMIDGE, who absconded from South Eston, on the 22ud ultimo, charged with embezzle- ment : he is a uauve of York, has been a telegraph clerk from his youth up to about 18 months ago, is well known in tele- graph offices in London, Mauchesier, Liverpool, and Carlisle ; he isjj26 years of age, 5 leet 5 or 6 inches high, sallow com- plexion. giey eyes, brown bair. whiskers, aud moustache, Blender figure, sickly lookiog, and has a peculiar manner of coughing when talking ; dressed iu a brown mixture tweed suit, black top coat, dark cloihcap, with peak of same material, tied iu front. « ith black ribbon, aud Wellington, much addicted to drink. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, Stokesley, or to Sergeant Dickenson North Riding Constabu- lary, South Eaton, Middlesborough, Yorkshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 2. Absconded from Dunstable, on the 11th ultimo, charged with emtiezz'ement. and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued: CHARLES COOK alias SHORT, 14 or 15 years of age, 4 teet 8 or 9 inches high, fair complexion, very delicate appearance, grey eyes, light brown hair ; dressed in grey oveicoat, with black velvet collar, black leggings, and round crowned felt bat; has been employed aB a bakers boy, it is supposed that he will eudeavour to obtain employment in London; he lodged at the Casual Ward, Holloway, on the 13th and 14th ultimo, has a relatiun living at North Burton- mews. Berkeley square. London. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Borough Police, Dunstable.— Bow- street Match 2, Description of WILLIAM FULLER, who is wanted on a warrant, charged with stealing on the 11th instant, at Ighthatn, a silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled ; a gold Pin, set wiih four or five blue stones ; a - Shirt; and a pair of Boots ; the properly of Henry Parnell. He is about 20 years of age, 6 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and complexion, a tuft of hair on chin, aud no whiskers: dressed iu old dark jacket and vest, blue guernsey, dark striped trousers, felt hat with blue striped band, aud elaeiic- side boots. Is a journeyman butcher, aud supposed to have been previously convicted. Information to be given to Superintendent 11 ulse, Kant Con- stabulary, West Mailing.— Bern street, February 28. * Ab cnndcd on the 21st instant, from Newport, Monmouth- shire : HENRY IGGULDEN, commercial traveller to Messrs. Allfrey, of the Castle Brewery, charged with embezzling several sums of Meney, the property ot his employers : he is 36 years of age, 5 teet 7 inches high middle stature, black hair, black whiskers, cut short round the chin, daik quick eye, fresh complexion, acd rather shaip squeaking voice ; dressed in a black lrock coat, black trousers, daik vest, and high crowned hat, left by Great Western train, and is supposed to have gone to London or Liverpool to emigate to America. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Huxtable, Borough Police Office, Newport, Monmouthshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 28. Absconded from Wisbech on the 21st instant, charged with Btealin? two silver Watches, which have been recovered : FREDERIC GARRETT, a tramping watch cleaner, 35 or 40 years of age, 3 feet 6 or 7 inches high ; dressed iu a black surtout coat, grey mixture trousers, speckled straw or old black chummy hat, wears a white aprou, and carries a small bag ; has been a soldier. Information to be g veil to Head Constable Sharpe, Wisbech, Cambs, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, February 28. Stolen from the dweliing- house of Jas Needham, Egleton, between 9 a. m. and 12 noon on the 25th instant, during the absence of the family: \ lb. of Butter and about 3 lbs. of cooked Ham. By a tramp, 21 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, upright, and rather clean appearance ; dressed ill loose guernsey frock, oark trousers, and cap similar to a sailor'B ; he slept at Oakham Union the nieht previous to the robbery, when be gave his name as SAMUEL HIMES. In- formation to be given at the Police Station, Oakham, Rutland. — Bow- street, February 28. Description of THOMAS HAFFENDEN, charged on a warrant with stealing from the dwelling house of George Barrow on the 16th instant, at the palish of Burwash, a pair of black cloth Trousers, a pair of Braces, a woollen Shirt, since recovered, about 5 yards blaik Cloth, £ 4 3s. in Silver, money not recovered : he is 23 years of age, 5 teet 6 or 7 incheB high, fair complexion, has some Binall pimples on his face, dark brown hair, figure proportionate, bingle, labourer, a native of Burwaah ; dressed iu an old short white slop, has been mended in both sleeves, cird trouters, half boots, supposed gone into Kent. Informatioa to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes; to Superintendent Thompson, Battle; to Sergeant Steer, Burwa^ h} or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, Feb) uary 26. Description of SAMUEL SETTERS, apprentice to John Bissett, saddler and harness maker, of Plymouth, charged with embezzling Monies ot his master : 18 yeara ot age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, eyes, and hair, and has ' S. S.' in blue ink on the back of one of his hands Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Police Office, Plymouth, who holds a warrant tor his apprehension.— Box- street, Feb. 26. Description of HENRY STEAD, who absconded from Leeds ou the 20th instaut, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been granted, charged with embezzlement : he is a traveller, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, thiu, sallow complexion, large mouth, two broken teeth in front, rather prominent features, thin blaot hair, and clean shaved ; diessed iu black billycock hat, black pea jacket, dark mixture trousers, aud lace- up boots. Information to be given to the Ctiief Constable, Town Hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, February 26.
