POLICE CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir. cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences ivho are known but not in custody, and a Description of those ivlio are not known, i. uir Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehend on. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and ecoverina them. No. 4531 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1868. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving nformation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear tbe Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor,, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As BO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Ma London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MfTtlDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. About 1' 30 p. m. on the 26th instant, the body of a newly born male Child, was found wrapped in an old black stuff skirt, and liolland apron, in Hagg Wood, at Honley, near Hudders- field. At the coroner's inquest held, a verdict of wilful murder was returned against some person or persons unknown. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Heaton, Police Station, Huddersfield.— Bow- streei, Jan. 31. On the 25th instant, the body of a newly born male Child, was found floating in the Glamorganshire Canal, at Cardiff, with a piece of white tape round its neck.* At the coroner's inquest a verdict of wilfol murder was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, Police Station, Cardiff.— Bom- street, January 31. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person on the 23rd instant, whilst attend- ing a sale by auc'ion at Mold, a browu morocco Purse, with elastic band, containing a £ 5 Note, No. O | W. 01640, dated 11th May, 1867, a Sovereign, a half Sovereign and some Silver. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Mold, Flintshire.— Bow- strwt, January 31. Stolen from the person of Mr. John Richards, farmer, of Red House, Trelystan, Montgomeryshire, on tbe 27th instant, an old fashioned pair cased silver Watch, maker G. Graham, London, No. 100004, with steel Chain andvECey attached. Information to be given to Sergeant Strefford, Police Station, Welshpool, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen from the person of a man, in Middlesborough, on the 28th instant, a silver patent lever Watch, with silver dial, steel hands, No. 51240. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Saggerson, Police Station, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen from the person of James Lowe, sub contractor, Silverdale, about 6 p. m. on the 28th instant, £ 21 10s. in Gold and Silver, by JOHN BAKER, alias CINDER JACK, a navvy's labourer, from 30 to 36 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 ins. high, dark hair, fresh looking, high cheek bones, pockpitted ; dressed in a pilot jacket, drab cotton cord trousers, red woollen shirt, with black spots , aud a black cloth cap needle worked on the Bides : he is in the habit of working on new lines of railway at London, Sheffield, and other places, may be found in some low houses. Information to be given to Sergeant Torr, Silverdale, Newcastle under- Lyme, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— bow- street, January 31. Stolen from the person on the night of the 25th instant, a large- size pair- cased silver Watch, bulls eye glass, romau figures, No 0279. steel curb Chaiu, steel Key, and a small metal Seal attached. Stolen at 9 p. m. on the 24th instant, from the person of a gentleman iu Manchester ; a gold English lever Watch, with « J. 11.' engraved in centre ot outer case. Any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and r ecovery of the Watch, shall receive £ 5 reward, on application to Chief Constable Palin, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, Jan. 29. Stolen from the person of a man, on the night of the 10th instant, at Brecon a silver consular level' Watch, No 3798, maker Richard Webb, tuecon. Information to be given to Superintendent Lee, Borough Police Station, Brecon,— Bow- Street, January 29. Stolen from the person in the borough of Bolton, on the 21st instant, a Bilver Geneva Watch. No. 23942, No. 10s size, lettered on dial, which is white, ' B. B. P.,' had attached a square mohair Guard, a gold Locket, and a Cross. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Chorley, on the 27th ultimo, a gold centre seconds skeleton lever stop Watch, maker ' A. Bell,' Church and Accrington, No. 17489. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Beetham, Constabulary Office, Chorfey.— Bow- street, January 27. BUEGLARY ANB HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen from the cottage of George Alsop, Cotton, near Rugeley, in the county of Stafford, which was forcibly entered between 2 30 and 3' 30 p. m., on the 31st ultimo, the following property, viz : 1 black cloth Jacket, and a pair of light coloured Trousers, cotton mixture. Supposed by a man who was seen near the cottage a short time previous to the robbery, he is about 23 or 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, aud pockmarked ; dressed in a Bhabby suit, dark jacket, old short slop, old moleskin trousers, and low hat. Information to be given to Inspector Lester, Police Station, Rugeley, Staffordshire.— Bow- sireet, February 3, Between 2 and 4 p. m. on the lst instant, the cottage of Edward Prichard, of Wroxeter, was broken into aud four halt- crown Pieces, and one white calico Shirt, with linen front, and a pair of grey lambswool Stockings stolen. Sup- posed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, Coun y Constabulary Office, Shrewsbury, or to Police Constable ( 68) Bradshaw, Atcham, near Shrewsbury, Salop. — Bow- street, February 3. The dwelling- houses of the Rev. Canon Muller and Miss Ladbrook, both situate ia Cathedral close, in the city of Nor- wich, were burglariously broken and entered on the night of the 31st ultimo, and the following property stolen therein : 1 silver Inkstand, the name ' Simmonds' on the bottom. 1 ditto Cruet Stand. 1 ditto Thimble, Penknife, and Scissors. 1 plated Mustard Pot. 1 ditto Tea Spoon. 1 pair of ditto Candlesticks, 1 small oval brass Timepiece. 1 email Box, containing Russian Compacts. 1 black cloth Coat, one outside breast pocket, 1 stout black cloth Inverness Cape, pockets outside, and one inside breast pocket. 1 black worsted Shawl, dyed. 1 pair of female's elastic- side Boots. 10 Tea Spoons, 2 Table ditto, 2 Dessert ditto, 2 Dessert Forks, and 1 Gravy Spoon, all silver and marked ' S.' 1 Bilver Spoon, marked ' E. M. C.' 1 silver Dessert ditto, marked ' E. L. C.' And the following electro- plated articles : 5 Dessert Forks and Spoons, marked ' K. S. K,,' ' A. C. K.,' * M. E C.,'' F. A. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Guildhall, Norwich.— Bow- st,, February 3. Stolen from a dwelling- house in the parish of Prees, in the county of Salop, by means of housebreaking, during the night of the 30th ult., the property of Wm. Allmark, a black cloth Jacket, with pockets outside, and one inside left breast; a pair ot black cloth Trousers, a black cloth Waistcoat, pieced round the bottom ; a reit plush Waistcoat, with flowers ; and a black Shawl, with silk fringe four iuches deep. Information to be given to Sergeant Brown, Weill, Salop.— Bow- strut February 3. The shop of Mr. Edwin Jones, grocer, Neath, was entered during the night ot the 27th, or morning of the 28th instaut, supposed by skeleton keys, as the door was found partly open in the moruing : about 16 lbs of Anstie's Devizes shag Tobacco, made up in halt quarters, with the trade mark thereon, also a few shillings iu copper Coins, were stolen therefrom. Intoi- rnation to be given to Head Constable Phillips, Neatb, Glamorganshire.— Bow- streut, January 31. During the night of the 22nd instant, the counting- house at the Setheringsett Bieweiy was broken into, aud an iron Chest stolen aud cirried away, containing upwards of £ 13 in ' Silver and Copper ( including 26s. worth of 3d - pieces), ana a quoiitity ot Envelopes, Directed ' W. H. Cozens Hardy, Esq., Setheringsett Brewery, Holt.' There was the track of a pony aud cart iii a field near by, aud the footprints of two men, one weariug 8 ro- » ot small hobnails, the other 6 rows ( three on each side) in their boots. Tile thieves left behind a piece i f old lilac print and common short knife. A reward ot £ 10 will he paui tor such information as shall lead to the conviction ot the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Inspector Mobbs, Holt, Norfolk.— Bow street, January 31. Between 7 and 8 p. m. on the 26th instant, the house of Miss Spink, No. 14, Maids'- causeway, was entered, whilst the family were at church, and the followiug silver Articles stolen : 4 Table Spoons, 6 Dessert ditto. 1 Gravy ditto. 4 Tea ditto. C large Forks. 6 small ditto. 2 Sauce Ladles. Ail marked ' G. J.' in old English. 1 paper Knife, with silver handle, marked ' Maria,' ivory broken. Some £ 5 Notes of Pease's Old Bank, Hull. About £ 10 in Gold. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of ther offender or offenders. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Turrall, Cambridge.— Bow- street, January 31. Between 6 and 9 p. m. on the 26th instant, the dwelling- house of the Rev. Thomas Watts, Verulam- road, St. Albans, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : 1 round gold Brooch, set with pearls, pendant attached. 1 small gold Brooch, with grey hair in centre, and a small King attached. 1 silver oval Brooch, twisted. 4 Spoons, two Table, two Salt, marked ' E.' 1 plated Dessert Fork. 16s. 3d. in Silver, and a Farthing. Supposed to have been committed by tramps. Information to be given to Head Constable Pike, St. Albans, Herts.— Bow- street, January 29. Between 10 p. m. 23rd, and C a. m. on the 24th instant, the saddle- room of George Skey, Esq., Bonehill House, near Tam- wortb, was broken and entered, aud stolen therein : 2 pairs of kersey mere Breeches ; 2 pairs of do. Leggings ; a pair of black cloth Trouseis ; a grey aud browu mixture Jacket; a red and black mixture Vest; a nearly new black silk Hat; a white woollen Muffler ; a cashmere Scarf, with red spots ; a Pocket Knife, with two blades, corkscrew,& c.; and a polishing Brush. Information to be given to Sergeant Longden, Tamworth, Staffordshire, or at any Police Station in the county,— Bow- street, January 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. The brown mare Pony found at Seisdon in November last, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 16th December, has not yet been owned, and it is supposed to have been Btolen from a distance. It is 5 years old, about 13 hands high, star on forehead, near hind foot white. Information to be given to Inspector Goddard, Police* Office, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, — How- street, February 3. Absconded on the 2Gth ultimo, from the parish of Croughton, two men of the following description, charged with stealing a ewe Sheep : GEORGE WILLIAMS, labourer, 38 years of age, 5 feet 10 iuches high, stout make, fair com- plexion, grey liair, light whiskers, grey eyes, and dressed in dirty white slop, cord trousers, rouud black hat, and heavy lace- up nailed boots; and ROBERT AYRISS, labourer, about 24 years of age, 6 feet 0 iuches liigh, very fresh complexion, no whiskers, high cheek bones, brown hair, grey eyes, and dressed in dark coat, trousers aud cap, anl light shoes. Infor- mation to be giveu to the Superintendent of Police, Towcester, or to Inspector Botterill, Brackley, Northamptonshire.— Bow- s reet, February 3. Description of a man who hired a Horse and Trap for a day, to go to Castle Donington Races on the 10th ultimo, and has ijpt since been heard of: he is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, and of gentlemanly appearance.^ A browu Mare, about 10 years old, rat tail, near hind leg thicker than the o. her, white heel, and a scar on the back, pinched ny the cart siddle ; Dog Trap, with two bright lamps on the side, seat board, with a new back rest, not painted; blue body, picked out with iel stripes, red wheels, with black 6tripes, straight shatts, pain ed red, with black stripes, nut- crack springs, one wneel wuli two new spokes, aud one new felloe not painted ; silver plated harness, with the name of Marston and Co., Birmingham, upon it; two leather Cushions, with gieen and wiute braid, a Whip, with plated ferrules; a horse Rug, with green and white stripes. £ 5 reward will bs paid by Mr. Brown, the owner, to any person giving such in- tormation as bhall lead to the apprehension aud conviction of the offender or otlenoers, and recovery of the Horse and Trap. Absconded from his lodgings at Ince, about 6 a in the 1st instant, stealing and taking sway with him a black leather Purse with clasp attached containing lOs. in Gold, the pro- perty of Peter Lysons. ot Ince, fireman, a man of the following description : about 30 years of age. 5 feet 6 of 7 inches high, dark hair, black whiskers and moustache, very dark eyes ; dressed in a dark cloth overcoat with pockets in laps hehind, black cloth buttons, plain collar, a button on left side ( nearly off), cord waistcoat and tr users, blucher hoots with three holts at each side, and hlack stiff hat ; a circular sawyer by trade, has travell- d a great deal, and it. in sjpposed he lias goue to Sheffield or Leicester. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension cf EDWIN BALLINGER, hairdresser, about 35 years of age, about 6 teet high, rather slight make, light hair, no whiskers, light moustache ; dressed in a black coat, dark trousers and vest, and high- crowned hlack hat. He is charged with stealing, at Brighton, on the 26th ultimo, the property of William Grayling.: a dark witney Great- coat, fly trout, one pocket each side, and one inside br. ast, rather stiabhy, and supposed to have the name ' Marshall' inBide the collar; a Case of seven Razors, with one handle, in a box, the top of which Bcrews round ; a white- handled Razor, the blade takes out with a spring; a pair of Scissors, hair- cutting Combs, and other articles. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow street, February 3. Description of a yonn? woman who is committed for trial at the n. xt assizes at Dorchester, charge'! with ob'aming goods under false pretences: LOUISA ANNIE WILSON, alias MORRIS, alias TROLLOPE alias GRIMES, 25 years of age, above the middle h. ight, cut on the left temple, bio » n hair fair complexion, tull grey eyes, has lost the left leg, has a co'k one ; dressed in a black alpaci dress, with crape trimmi" g, black cloth jacket, a large dark brown waterproof cloak, black hat, trimmed with black velvet, rather shabby, which stie covers with a black fall, carries an umbrella in an oil skin case, to assist her in walking ; she was di- charged a few days since from Exeter Gaol, where Hhe was committed for one month for defrauding the South Western Railway Company; she is supposed to have committed offences at Basingstoke and elsewhere: states she is a native of Shirley, near Southampton. Information to he given to Supt. MacHale, Beaminster, Dorset- shire.— Bom- street, Frb'Uarjy 3. Ab- conded from Shrewsbury, on the 22nd instant, charged with stealing the monkey Jacket from Mr. A. Thomas's, of Criggion, Montgomeryshire, as adveitised in the Police Gazette of the 24th in- tant : a labourer, who pives the name of RICHARD TURNER, is supposed to belong to the Shrop- shire Militia, he is about, 30 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, stout make, rather round shoulders, daik brown hair, fresh face, grey eyes, a tuft of sandy hair on chin, a cut mark on the left cheek under ihe eye, scar mark on forehead over the right eye, and turns his toes out. ; dressed in an old black jimcrow hat, dark cloth jacket, and cord trousers. Information to be given to Police Constable Hudson, Buttington, near Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, who holds the warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 31. Stolen from the premises of John Rushton, of Market Rasen, on the 12th instant: a Sweeping Machine, complete, fifteen Rods, and ihree feet in length ; two Sweeping Sheets ; two Hand Brushes; one Bag ; one pair of Trousers ; one Shirt ; one Sl'p ; one sleeved Waistcoat; one billycock Hat, Stitched ; and one Scarf. By two sweeps. CHAS. TURNER, alias LIVERPOOL JIMMY, about 30 years of ago, G feet high, long features, daik hair, tuft oPhair on chin ; dressed in a cap, alpaca mat. cord trousers ; supposed to be a native of Doncaster. HENRY LOVE, abour 22 years of age, 6 feet 2 inches high, rather slenderly made, very little beard or whiskers ; supposed dressed in the stolen, as he left his own clothes behind Information tn be given to Superintendent Barsby. Description of GARFOOT SISMEY, a shepherd, and native of Castor, Northamptonshire, who absconded from the pirish of Fletton on the 2Gth instant, charged with larceny : he is 20 years of age, 5 leet 0 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, aud dressed in brown velveteen coat, cord troupers, and a rusty brown cloth cap. lie ha° a mother or relative at, Moonditch or Aldwinkle, near Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire T> vo guineas reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehen- sion of Sismey. Absconded from Holbeach, on the night of the 31st ultimo, charged with assaulting with intent to commit a rape on Harriett Green, of Holbeach : THOMAS WALKER, a groom, about 22 yeara of age, 6 feet 5 or G inches high, brown hair, and wi iskers. walks howlegged ; diessed in dark cloth cap, with peak, grey jacket and vest, such as are usually worn by stablemen, tight fitting light coloured cord trousers, highlows with brass eyelet hob s, may be wearing a white short slop, with hand round tbe bottom, or a snuff coloured coat, and when he lett llolbeach he took a suit of grey clothing, and a cap of the same colour, tied up in a red handkerchief. Information to be given to Inspector Butcher, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 3. to his wife and family in America, and says he has been in the in a brown cloth jacket, with two outside pockets in skirts, Canadian or Irish Militia Artillery, and lately employed in and one outside breast pocket on the left side, no v st, cotton FRAUDS AMD AGGRAVATED '' SiSB £ mea N O rr Description of a man calling himself GRIFFITHS ( sup- posed to be fictitious), against whom a warrant'is issued, charging him with obtaining money by false pretences at Wellington on the 9th instant. He called on several trades- men, stating he was sent to order oils, ropes, & o., for the Hay- bridge Ironworks, which was false. Ho is ubout 40 years of age, raiher stout, sandy wh'akers; said he was an engineer. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, February 3. Description of a man going about the country and who has obtained various sums of Money, in the neighbourhood of Reading, stating that he wishes to raise a sum of money to go the peat office which situation he W « B forced to leave ; he gives the name of CAPTAIN BOWLER, & c.. and is of the follow- ing description : an Irishman, about 60 years of age, 6 feet 1 or 2 inches high, stout and well made, fair complexion, whiskers turning grey, 1ns a gentlemanly and nilitary appearance ; dressed in a black cloth coat, dark vest, mixture trousers, some- times wears a black high crowned hat, at other times a low crowned felt hat, and has with him documents purporting to | of 8ge, 6 feet 4 inches high, proportionately made, dark brown be signed by the Governor of Canada, and several Officers of hair, worn long , hazel eyes, swarthy complexion, has lost the Aldershot. He sometimes carries with him a light top coat left arm at the shoulder, has had the right thigh and leg and a silk umbrella. Information to he given to Superin- broken ; dressed in a brown cloth coat, old black vest, dark tendent Crook, Berks Constabulary Station, Reading, who grey trousers, black bowler hat, and heavy laced boots: states cord trousers, with fly front, blue serge stiirt, and a cotton striped one underneath, heavy laced boots, brass eyelets, and black cloth cap : states he is a labourer and has worked a good deal in Lancashire, and is supposed to be a deserter from the army. JAMES LEWIS, but has also given the names of JAMES LEWIS HARRIES and REECE THOMAS, about 2G years holds a warrant for hisapprehensiou.— Bow- street, February 3. he is a native ot Pembrokeshiie, but has been in the habit of going about with begging letters, and has several forged characters in his possession, and a duplicate for a watch pledged at Charles Goodman's Pontypridd. By two men : one 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, sindy whiskers ( full meeting), sharp nose ; dressed in blue jacket, light or fustian trousers, blue cap with leather peak and flaps tied across the front, and red neckerchief : the other 28 years of age, shorter than the first, weak inflamed eyes, and has a peculiar way of looking ; dressed in canvas slop, tied with strings round waist, fustian trousers, tied below the knees with string, high lace- up boots, and black cap. P.' engraved on the back ; and a gold secret link Guard, the swivel of which has a large top, aud opens with a spring at each end. Supposed by a tramp, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slender make, small sandy whiskers, and dressed in old dark jacket, old grey trousers, split on the right knee, old cap with peak, and has an apron tied round his waist; hawks shirt buttons. He left the guard at a shop at Banbury on the same evening, and took it away on the following morning, and was traced to Leamington, and is supposed to be gone to Coventry or Birmingham.
