POLICE GAZETTE. CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names oj Persons charged with Offences who are Mown but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, i u ir Appearance, lb- ess, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehei^ rm. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4518 MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 1868. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving nformation respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As HO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor ciiast be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Ma 11 London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNBING. On the morning of the 23rd November, the body of Esther Baggott, wife of Moses Baggott, jun., of Heathfield Bridge, Moxley, was found dead near the turnpike road, between Wednesbury and Moxley, in the county of Stafford, with marks of violence on her throat and other parts of her body ; a coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unKnown.' A reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government to any person or persons who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the discovery a- id conviction of the murderer or mur- derers ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually murdered the woman, who shall give such information and evidence as shall lead to the same result. Information to be given to Captain Congreve, Chief Constable, Stafford.— Bow- stree', January 15. FORGERY. Further information respecting PATRICK MURRAY, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 8th instant, and for whose apprehension a warrant is issued : he forged and obtained cash and goods for three other cheques in Devonport, and is supposed to have several cheques'in his possession still, which he may endeavour to pasi; they are on the London and South Western Bank, Plymouth ; those uttered are numbered 30886, 30887, 33022, and 33024, and several others are missing from the same cheque- book. In addition to the articles described he had also with him a gold hunter lever Watch, enamelled dial, jewelled in four holes, makers Heine and Hoefler or S. Hoefler, Devonport, No. 8486 ; a mosaic gold Ring, 6et with a diamond ; a Pin, set with pearl ; a pair of gold Sleeve Links and Studs ; Albert and long Chains ; and two pairs of new Boots, elasiic sides. He is an expert billiard player ; has a wife in London, supposed a barmaid in a public- house ; he went to London by the early train from Plymouth on the 6th instant. Information to be given to Head Constable Lynn, Devouport, who holds the warrant for his apprehension — Bom- street, January 15. shabby gentlemauly appearance, little or no hair about his face, light complexion, broad face, and dressed in daik cloth clothes, and black tall beaver hat. £ 50 reward will be paid on recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders, or in proportion to the amount recovered, on appli- cation to Superintendent Williams, Detective Department, Town- hall, Salford, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Januaiy 22. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the 17th instant, at North Shields, a patent lever silver Watch, No. 21566, has a gold Guard attached. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Hewett, Police Office, Tynemouth.— Bow- street, Jan. 20. As William Halstead, of Bingley, carter, was passing on the turnpike- road through Knab Wood, Shipley, at 8' 20 p. m. on the lCth instant, with his waggon, he was seized by two men ( two others standing by), and robbed of a Florin, and 3Jd. in Copper. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen on the 12th instant, from a man while in Brill- row, St. Pancias, a silver Watch, gold figures, maker ' Pizzey, and a long gold Guard attached : by a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, ark hair and complexion, no w hiskers ; dressed in a brown clo* n coat, dark cloth trousers, and black deerstalker hat.— Metropolian Police Y Division, January 20. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 0 a. m. and 2 p. m. on the 16 th instant, a cottage situateatTytherington, Gloucestershire, was broken and entered, and an old verge Watch, one Sovereign, four Shillings, a black cloth Jacket, a black cloth Vest, a dark cloth Vest, with white spots in it, all about half worn, a plaid Scarf, a red and yellow Bilk Handkerclutf, and a blue and white Necktie were stolen therefrom ; the property of Aaron Hunt, a labourer, supposed by tramps. Infojmation to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Police Office. Sodbury, or to Sergeant Arthur, Police Office, Thornbury, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, January 24. During the night of the 16'. h ir. stant, the rectory situate at Brierly Hill, in the county of Stafford, was entered and the following property stolen : about 15s. in Silver, one silver Pencilease, and one gold Pencilcase, has the letters ' J. L.' en- graved ou the stone ; entrance was effected through the diawing room window being left unfastened ; two tramps were seen looking round the premises, and are suspected of the offi- nce. Information to be given at the Police Office, Brierley Hill.— Bow- street, January 24. Early on the morning of the 15 h instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John James, of Somersham, in the county of Suffolk, farmer, was broken into by four men, disguised, who stole therein about eighteen £ 5 Notes, of Alexander's Bank, Ipswich, £ 7 or A8 in Geld and Silver, a gold Keeper, a silver Tea bpoon, five plated Tea Spoons, aud a bottle of Gin. A rewaid of £ 60 will he paid on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Super- intendent Nagle, County Police Station, Ipswich, or Police Constable Webb, Police Station, Offcon, Suffjlk.— Bow- street, January 27. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Knightley, near Ecclgsball, during the night of the 15th instant, a light bay horse Colt, thorough bred hunter, rising 2 years old, about 14 hands high, fore fetlocks black, hind fetlocks white, white star on forehead, white blaze on the nose, in good condition, has not been shod, and is remarkably quiet, the property of William Hewett, Three Horse Shoes Inn, Knightley. £ 3 reward will be paid for the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the colt. Information to be given to Sergeant Macrory, E; cleshall, or at any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Boio- street, January 24. Stolen since the 20ili November last, the property of Reuben Peckham, Fletching, a small bay cob horse Colt, 12 or 13 hands high, small stai on forehead, very straight head, carries his ears very upright, the mane and tail very long and thick. Information to be given to Superintendent Peacock, Rickfield, or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, January 22. JOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person in the borough of Bolton, on the 21st instant, a Bilver Geneva Watch, No. 23942, No. 10s size, lettered on dial, which is white, ' B. B. P.,' had attached a square mohair Guard, a gold Locket, and a Cross. Information to be given to Chief Constable Beech, Bolton, Lancashire. Bow- street, January 27. Stolen from the person of a gentleman at Chorley, on the 27th ultimo, a gold centre seconds skeleton lever stop Watch, maker ' A. Bell,' Church and Accrington, No. 17489. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Btetham, Constabulary Office, Chorley.— Bow- street, January 27. Stolen at Salford at 8 30 p. m. on the 17th instant, from the person of a gentleman, a dark coloured morocco leather Pocket Book, in shape resembling the letter D, containing three £ 100 Bank of England Notes, dated London or Man- chester, 19ih Novembor, 1867, and numbered respectively Q 1 X15437 or 15438, 15445, and 16446 ; oue £ 60 ditto ditto, one £ 20 ditto ditto, five £ 10 ditto, sundry Memoranda, a small quantity of postage aud receipt Stamps, and a subscriber' Ticket on the Blackburn Exchange. A. prostitute of the following description is suspected : 24 or 25 years of age, about 5 feet 4 inches high, rather s'out,. speaks with a very strong Scotch accent, and Slid she came from Dundee ; dressed iti a datk coloured hat and mantle, and dark wiussy dress, together with a man about 35 years of age, 6 feet 9 or 10 inches high, Stolen by means of housebreaking, between C and 7 p. m. on the 17th instant, from the house of Mr. I. R. Mjjtt, King's Heath: a dark mixture cloth Overcoat; a 1 irge Brussels Carptt- bag, nearly new ; a long black leather Strap ; three linen Shirts, marked ' I. R. Mott, Nos. 10, 11, and 12 ajipan Collar Box, containing six linen Collars, three lawn Handker- chiefs, marked ' I. R. Mott;' a pair of dark kid Gloves; 29 yards ot Irish Linen ; a pair of new grey worsted Stockings, marked ' M. No. 6 ;' a brown linsey Dress ; a crochet Anti- macassar ; a pair of japan leather Slippers; Martineau's Selection of Hymns, hound in purple morocco; and a Counter- pane. A rewaid of £ 7 7s. from the King6Wood and Moseley Association and a further reward of £ 5 5s. from Mr. I. R. Mott, will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from a field at Hackney Cross, in the parish of Million, between the 15th and 19th instant, two sheep, viz., a yearling ram, the property of Mr. James Parsons, of Mathon, marked ' J. P.' on the sides with pitch, long wool, and very poor ; and a yearling wether, the property of Mr. Charles Oakley, of the same parish, marked ' O' on the rump with pitcb. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Upton- on- Severn, or Acting Inspector Turner, Great Malvern, Worcestershire.— Bow- slreet, January 27. Found in the possession of two suspected persons, who are remanded to the Town Hall, Dulverton, till the 25th instant, a bay mare Pony and Colt, of the Exmoor bread : the mare has never been shod, and is very wild ; the colt is about 7 or 8 months old, and of sorrel colour. Information to be given to Superintendent Edmonds, Dulverton, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, January 24. Stolen from a stable at Pudsey, during the night of the 20th instant, a red and white milch cow Hide, ia a green state, with large udder, marked down centre from having been blistered, the left horn is marked C. H.; the property of John Farrer, farmer. Information to be given to Superintendent Bill, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford.— Bow- st„ Jan 24 LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of a youth charged with embezzling various suns of Money from the Harp public house, Waltham Abbey, he is 19 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair; dressed in dark brown overcoat, black cloth trousers, aud fenian hat.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, January 27, Abscoiided on the 18th instant, PATRICK McCABE, charged with stealing a black leather Bag, which he had been entrusted with to convey from Farnborough Railway Station to the owner, Edgar H. Rind, of York Town, Frimley, containing a black frock Coat and Vest, a pair of dark check Trousers, two Shirts, two Scarfs, one brown and white silk, the other white woollen, a pair of Slippers, a pair of Socks, a travelling v « P, three pocket Handkerchiefs, two lawn, one cambric, marked ' E. H. Rand,' f^ nr shirt Collars, set o' sleeve Links, white hindle Razor, maker ' Thornhill, London,' a pair of nail Scissors, four Books, two Brushes, and a small morocco writing Case, containing note Paper, and a few Stamps. He is an Irishman, 29 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair com- plexion, brown hair, slight dark moustache ; dressed in a short dark jacket, dirty light trousers, old shoes and cap with peak, he was discharged from the 59th Regiment, on the 28th October last, and is marked twice with the letter ' D,'; he is|= upposed to hive gone to London by way of Staines, Hounslow, Brentford, and Hammersmith, at which places it is likely he has pledged or sold some of the property. Absconded on the 19 , h instant, from No. 35, Con way- mews, Fitzroy- square, stealing £ 6 : a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, small carrotty whiskers; dressed as a stableman.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, January 27. Absconded from No. 3, Chepstow- villas, Notting- hill, stealing a £ 10 Btnk of England Note and two £ 5 ditto': a female, 22 years of age, fair complexion, lost front teeth ; dressed in striped dress, and white stra> v bonnet trimmed with white ribbon.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, January 27. Absconded on 4th Nov. last, from Kicgston- on- Thames, charged with embezzlement: SPENCER GEO. KENNARD, grocer's assistant, 28 years of age, 5 feet 8 iuches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers, cut short; dressed in dark frock coat— Metropolitan Police, V Division, Jan. 27. Stolen on the 18th instint, from a smith's shop, at Old Windsor, three cast steel garden Forks, one has five grains, the others four grains each, quite new, the property of Mr. Blake, by a tramping blacksmith, about 36 or 37 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 iuches high, dark swarthy complexion, black hair, beard and moustache ; dressed in datk tustian trousers, cord jacket dirty cloth cap, aud very old blucher boots: has a dirty slovenly appearance, and will probably inquire for work at smith's shop's, in country villages. Information to be given to Inspector Reece, Berks Constabulary, Windsor.— Eow- strea, January 24. Absconded on the 11th instant, from the Three Tuns public house, Spittlegate, Grantham, charged with stealing a black cloth Coat, jaifed seams, and a pair of Scotch plaid Trousers, a private of Her Mjesty's 51st Regiment of Foot, JOSEPH BECKETT, about 28 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 ins. high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, light built, high cheek bones, a native of Sleaford, Lincolnshire ; dressed when last seen in regimental great co it, trousers, boots and cap, and had a bundle with him. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Sharpe, County Police, Grantham, Lincolnshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- street, January 24. Description of WILLIAM SHELTON , a fishmonger, who absconded on the 17tti ultimo, charged on a warrant with embezz ing eleven Shillings, four boxes of Oranges, and one bag of Nuts, the property of Thomas Bowring, of Newport, he is 25 years of age, 6 feet 6 or C inches high, proportionate make, pale complexion, dark hair, oval face, and a native of Staff > rd ; dressed in grey clothts, coat lined with red plaid, Information to be giveu to Chief Superintendent Richardson, Wellington, or to Sergeant Christie, Newport, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 24. Description of WILLIAM H. AYRE, charged with 2 POLICE GAZETTE. January 27. several sums of Money, the property of embezzling . . _ . . employers : he is about 29 years of age, 4 feet 4 or 6 inches high, fair complexion with colour, light brown whiskers and hair,' blue eyes, had no moustache when last seen, but occasionally wears oue ; was dressed iu a. blue frock coat, and sealskin vest, wears a pin with a guinea attached. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Kingston- upon- Hull, who inlds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bene street, January 24. Stolen from Andover Union Workhouse, on the night o' the 2Cth instant. two fustian Jackets, two pairs of fustian Trousers, two pairs of lace- up Boots, and three slop Frocks. By two young men, paupers and inmates: one is about 19 years of age. 6 feet 5 inches high, freckled face, and a native of Andover the other is about 23 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, slender make, looks ill, and u native of Andover ; they are dressed in the workhouse clothing— fustian jacket and trousers, and white shop. They are supposed to have gone to the neighbourhood of London to look tor work. Information to given to Superintendent Campbell, Hants Constabulary, Andover, who holds a warrant foi their apprehension.— Bow- street, January 24. Abscinded on the 16th instant, from the ship ' Agnes,' lying in the Commercial Dock, Rotherhithe, stealing a beaver cloth Great- coat with smoked pearl buttons, a pair of new high Sea Boots, a pair of pepper- aud- salt- coloured cloth Trousers, a ditto Vest, a pair of Wellington Boots, two pairs of woollen Drawers, a new white flannel Shirt, two coloured ditto, a black check ditto, a purple light striped ditto, and a silver Guard, plain pattern : a German sailor, 26 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches high, ruddy complexion, red hair, whiskers, and moustache ( cnrlv) ; dressed in dark clothes.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, January 22. Absconded on the 16th instant, from the ' Dreadnought' hospital ship, lying off Greenwich, a seamen, stealing four £ 5 Bank of E- gland Notes, a gold Pencil case, a japanned Cashbox, a brown cloth Overco- it, and a lir. en Shirt.— Metropolitan Police, Thames- Division, January 22. Absconded from the residence of Mr. W. Cooke, of Danton, on tbe evening of the 18th ins ant, a female domestic servant of the following description, stealing a jipanued tin Cash- box, containing ubout £ 20 in Gold t: nd Silver : about 23 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, full round features, dirk brown hair, and left without shawl or bonnet. She hud been in Mr. Cooke's employment only two days. Information to be given to Superintendent Ludlani, Wilshaw, near Ashton- under- Lyne, Lancashire.— Bow- street, Janury 22. Absconded from the employment of Mr. Henry Beaumont, watch and clock maker, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, on the 14th instant, a Scotchman, who had been entrusted by Mr. Beau- mont to clean clocks and watches : he took with him a lever Watch, pair cased, No. ) 090, and a patent leather Satchel, containing a quantity of watchmaker's Tools; he was traced to Eastwood, Notts, and was in company with a tramping bricklayer ; said they were going to Scotland. He is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches I igh ; dressed when last seen in loose grey overcoat, black cloth trousers, black velvet vest, silk hat, and balmoral boots. Abscinded from Bedford on the 10th instant, charged with felony: JOHN PARROT GYDE, a clerk in Bedford Post Office, 21 years of Hge, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, dark hair, slight mouetache ; generally dressed in a dark mixed coat, light tweed trousers and waistcoat, and low crowned black hat, walks erect, when last heard of he stated he was going to London, and it is thought he will enlist as he has a brother in the « rmy at Malta. Information to be given to Chief Constable Steunett, Bedford who nolds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 22. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Jacob Ashman, collier, Cross Keys, parish of Risca, between 6 and 9 a. m. on the 8th instant, a silver open- ftced lever Watch, glass cracked, ' B. D.' scratched on the inside case, a silver Guard, and a pair of face- up Boots, with brass eyelet- holes and tips on the lieeJs. Sup- posed by ROBERT JONES, collier, a lodger, who has absconded, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued : he is a native of Kingswood Hill, near Bristol, about 22 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, davk complexion and hair, cut very short, and has a tuft of hair on chin ; dressed in a long dark coat, much worn and faded, supposed grey tweed trousers, and cap with French peak ; ia supposed to be acquainted with a young woman residing at No. 6 or 25, Queen- street, Birmingham Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk ; to Superintendent Mcintosh, Mon mouthshire Constabulary, Pontypool; or to Inspector Sheppatd, County Constabulary, Newport, Monmouthshire.— Bow- street, January 22. his native of Ely. Information to he given tq Head Constable Turrall, Borough Po'ice Office, Cambridge, who holds the warrant.— Bow- street, January 22. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Description of a man going about tbe North Riding of Yorkshire, obtaining Money by false representations, he states that an accident happened to him while workiug at a thrashing machine, at Mr. Thomas Wells, Hutton Moor, near Ripon, and that he has been staying at Thornton Steward, near Ley- burn, which is all false : gives the name of GEO. TAYLOR ( supposed fictitious), about 36 years of age, 6 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fair couiplex'on, speaks quick with a rough voice, one of his hands appears to be deformed which he exhibits ; dressed in tweed jacket, white slop underneath, rather dirty cord or fustian trousers, black billycock hat, and blucher boots. Infor- mation to be given to Inspector Alderson, Bedale, or to Super- intendent Walmsley, Leyburn North Riding of Yorkshire. — Bow- street, January 22. Remanded till the 27th instant, at the city of Hereford, THOMAS MORRIS, a native Newtown, Montgomeryshire, wool sorter, for attempting to obtain alms with a begging petition ( in the n- me of • Thomas Jones '), purporting that he had received injuries, and the money he obtains is to purchase a truss : he is 6 feet 4 inches high, grey eyes, hair turning grey, pale complexion, long f'ape, grey whiskers, and dressed in a black jimcrow hat, bhort dark j . cket, with four black bone buttons down the front, and hound with black braid, dirty black cloth vest, bouud with black braid ( same as jacket), grey trousers, strong nailed lace- up boots, nearly new, white Bhirt, and a red neckerchief. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Davies, City Police Office, Hereford.— Boro- streil, Jan 22. A warrant ban been issued for the apprehension of WALDEGRAVE HARLOCK, late a clerk in the County Court Office Cambridge charged with obtaining money under false pretences: he is about 22 years of age, but looks older, about 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, black hair and moustache, no whiskers, rather long pale face, and slouching gate ; he is a MISCELLANEOUS INFOIiMAI IONS. They are supposed to have given fictitious names. A number of well- made skeleton keys and picklocks were found in their possession. The woman states that she is the wife of tbe male prisoner, and gives the name of HARRIET WELSON, of Cardiff, 21 years of age, 5 feet high, brown eyes, fair com- plexion, light brown hair; dressed in a black and white linsey cloak and dress, sometimes in a plaid shawl, and black bonnet. These prisoners have resided for the past seven months at a common lodging- house in Peterborough, and have also resided at Leicester, St John- street, Birmingham, Southampton, Ports- mouth, Cardiff, Banbury, London, and Cambridge ; they are supposed io have been previously convicted, the male prisoner at Leicester, for stealing a watch, and in 1865 he was appre- hended at St. Iven, Hunts, for highway robbery, with Thomes Dixey and William Smith, alias Ginger, of Woolwich.
