Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all tetters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ? MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of two men, against whom warrants have been granted for their apprehension, charged with violently assault- ing and thereby breaking t » e arm and dislocating the shoulder of John Hodgson, of Beck Foot, in the parish of Holme • Cultram, Cumberland, on the 8th instant : PATRICK McVANNEY. native of Ireland, a labourer, 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresir complexion, rather stoutly made, knock- kneed, light brown hair, no whiskers, and grey eyes; dressed in moleskin ( sleeved) waist- coat and trousers, blue cloth cap with peak, and strong lace- up boots. The other, name unknown, 25 years of age, 6 feet G inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hiir, thin light whiskers, grey eyes, and proportionate make ; dressed in white loose cotton jacket, moleskin trousers, blue cloth cap, and wore strong boots. These men are travelling together and will probably call at farmhouses and solicit shearing or other labour. information to be given to Superintendent Bird, Wigton, Or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, September 16. Description of TOM THACKRAY, who is charged with stabbing Henry Morris on the night of tho Gih instant, at No. 6, Lion- street, Newtown, Leeds: he is 27 or 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair and moustache, stout set, round face ; dressed in a pepper and salt mixture suit, high felt hat, and elastic- side boots Information to be given to Chief Constable Wetherell, Town- hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, September 13. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Stolen by means of housebreaking, between 1 and 7 p. m. on the 12th ins'ant, from the cottage of Edward Baldwin, Wadhurst, Sussex, a dark tweed Jacket, two outside pockets and one inside the breast, four large black buttons on front, one button off behind, and a red cotton Handkerchief with • white spots. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Superintendent Bennett, Uckfield, Sussex, or to Sergeant Peerless, Mark Cross, Tunbridge Wells.— Bow street, Sept. 16. On the 9th instant, the house of John Jones, labourer, Rye Croft, Marton, was broken into and the following pro- perty stolen therein : a black and brown striped Waistcoat, three pockets outside, black calico back, lined with yellow calico, which has a 6tain on it from a plum, no neck, black covered buttons ; a pair of thin lace- up Boots, nailed round the heel, and small sprigs in front ; a pairot blue cotton Stockings,; and a Razor ( black halt) in black leather case. The thief has left behind him a pair of watertight Boots, good tops, bottoms worn off. A tramp is suspected, who went in the direction of Welshpool, where the things may probably be found pawned or sold. Information to be given to Superintendent Caswell, County Police Station, Shrewsbury, or to Sergeant Waterson, Minsterly Salop.— Bow- street, September 16. Stolen, by means of housebreaking, on the 14th instant, from the cottage of Richard Bateman, at Westerham, a grey mixture Jacket, pockets each side and inside left breast; two pairs of Trousers, one pair brown cloth mended in the seat, the other pair drab cloth ; a brown Vest with red stripes, the top button nearly off; a calico Shirt with linen front, with black studs ; a pair of unbleached Sheets : a pair of balmoral Boots, brass riveted ; a Half Sovereign ; and 10s. in Silver. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Colman, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow street, September 16. Between ll- 30 p. m. 9th, and 6 a. m. on the 10th instant, the dwelling- house of George Smiddy, of Killinghall, post master, was broken and entered, and 27s. worth of Id. postage Stamps, and a Desk containing several Books stolen therefrom; the Desk and Books were found in a field a short distance from the house. Information to be given to Captain Orsmby, West Riding Constabulary, Knaresborough, Yorkshire.— Bovi- strect, September 16. Between the hours of 9 p. m. the 9th and 6 a. m. the 10th instant, the grocer's shop occupied by Henry Milner, of Killinghall, was broken and entered, and 3 Shillings in copper and a Missionary Box, containing money, stolen therein ; the Box was afterwards found in a garden adjoining the shop, broken open and the money extracted. Information to be given to Captain Ormsby, West Riding Constabulary, Knares- boro.— Bow- street, September 16. Between 9 a. m. and 12' 30 p. m. on the 9th instant, the cottage of Robert Walee, labourer, Little Bookham, was broken into, and 15s. 5d. in Money and a soldier's Medal, inscribed ' George Waller, 3rd Batt. Rifle Brigade, No. 2342,' stolen therein. A man of the following description is suspected: from 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, slight build, very upright, and has the appearance ot a discharged soldier ; dressed in dark clothes and Scotch cap. Information to be given to Inspector Binyard, Leatherhead, or to Superin- tendent Page, Surrey Constabulary, DorkiDg.— Bow- street, September 13. Stolen from the house of Mr. R. N. Lister, of Cardigan- place, Burley, Leeds, by means of skeleton keys : a blue- black diagonal morning Coat, two pockets with laps behind and one in each breast, and a large one in skirt; a pair of Trousers of same material ; 14 yards of black Silk ; about 12 electro plated Forks, some marked ' W. E.'; 6 electro- plated Dessert Spoons, and 4 Table Spoon?. Information to be given to Chief Con- stable Wetherell, Town- hall, Leeds.— Bow- street, September 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING Found on the 15th ultimo ( supposed stolen), a bay mare Pony, aged, about 13 bands high, saddle mark on back, a little white inside each hind foot, ha? a rat tail blister down the back of the off hind leg, tail cut square^ Information to be given to Inspector Welch, Solihull, Warwickshire.— Bow- st., September 16. Description of WILLIAM ROGERS, alias WALLACE' charged with stealing a Lamb, from Lee Farm, in the parish of Pulborough, on the night of the 7th instant, 36 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark, coarse complexion, long features, brown hair, dark whiskers, meeting under the chin, and blue eyes ; dressed in a monkey jacket, dark waistc at, old corduroy trousers, mended at the Knee with a piece of leather, black billycock hat, with broad brim, and blue striped shirt. Has been living at Bermondsey, and is supposed to be hop picking in Kent. He has served in the East India Artillery, and also in a police force. Information to be given to Superintendent Kemmish, West Sussex Constabuiary, Petwortb, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- strect, September 16. Supposed to have been stolen on the 26tli ultimo, from East Ilsley Fair, a half bred Lamb, marked with a blue dot on the near hip, with paint; the property of M. E. Wilson, Newbury, Berks. Information to be given to Superintendent O'Neil, Wantage, Berks. - Bow- street, September 16. Further information of the Horse stolen at Kirwain, Glamorganshire, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 4th instant : it is a brown mouse or rusty coloured cart Horse, 15$ hands high, has a small white spot on one of the hind legs near the hoof, and is in good condition. The Horse has been traced to Simpsons Common, near Bristol, Gloucestershire. £ 3 reward will be paid upon its recovery, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Wrenn, Glamorgan Constabulary, Merthyr Tydvil.— Bow- street, September 16. Stolen on the night the 8th instant, from Welches Dam, near Chatteris, in the Isle of Ely, the property of Fryer Richardson, Esq. : a light bright bay nag Filly, 3 years old, about 14J hands high, half blood, in good condition, white star on forehead, one white foot behind, tail cut square about 2 months since, and is about 2^ feet long, was without shoeB, both fore fetlocks are chafed by a clog strap, also chafed a little under the jaws with a baiter ; also stolen, an old single rein Bridle, with breaking Bits, and an old Saddle. The Filly was traced to Epping, on the night of the 8th instant, in the direction of London, and was without shoes at that time, ridden by a labourer, about 36 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, with brown or sandy whiskers; dressed in white slop, dark cord trousers, and small narrow brimmed dark chummy or dark cap. £ 5 reward will be given on the apprehension and conviction of the offender, and recovery of the Filly. Information to be given to Inspector Mitchell, Chatteris, Isle of Ely.— Bow- street, September 13. Supposed to have been stolen on the night of the 8th inst. from a Common in the parish of Bishopstone, a white Maro, aged, about 15 hands high, mane cut short, switch tail, a little swelling and stiff in the knees, the property of John Jones. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Consta- bulary Office, Neath, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, Septan. 13. Supposed to have been stolen, during the night of the 29th ultimo, from Mill Mead Park, Guildford, a dark blue roan mare Colt, rising 3 yearr old, about 12 hands high, wart inside top of near leg, and a scar of a cut on off fore hoof. £ 1 reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Law, Borough Police, Guildford, Surrey.— Bow- street, September 13. Stolen from a meadow at Ross, during the night of the 9th instant, a dark brown cart Maro, 4 yetrs old, 15 hands 1 inch high, black legs, tan muzzle and flask, a few white hairs on forehead, long black tail with short dock, is shod, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Moore, Herefordshire Constabulary, lioss.— Bow- street, Sept. 13. Stolen on the night of the 10th instant, an aged bay mare Pony, about 13 hands high, saddle mark on near side, a small piece of skin off the eyelash of the near eye. the property of Mr. Benj. Brown. Also stolen from a saddle- room at the Woodron, during the same night, two sets of silver- plated Harness, one 6et more worn than the other, one of the sets has a breech- band to it and the other a kicking strap, saddle, and stirrup irons ; one of the collars is a large one ( nearly new), and the other has been recently lined, the property of W. T. Rogers, Esq. Information to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. - Bow- street, September 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Description of GEORGE JAMES, of Ashcott, labourer, charged with larceny at Shapwick, and against whom a warrant has been issued : he is about 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 ins. high, dark complexion, dark Bushy whiskers meeting under the chin ; dressed in a white elop, cord trousers, and old bowler hat. He has been previously convicted. Information to be given to Superintendent Jeffs, North Petherton, Somersetshire. — Bow- street, September- 16. Stolen between 8 p. m. on the 8tli and 6- 30 a. m. on the 9th instant, from 33, Caroline- place, Paddington, £ 5 in Gold. By a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4J inches high, fair complexion, no whiskers; dressed in brown coat, blsck vest, high hat, and side- spring boots — Metropolitan Police, X Division, Sept. 16. By a man, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair com- plexion, brown hair; dressed in black coat, light vest and trousers, and black billycock hat.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, September 16. Absconded on the 12th inst., from the Brewery, Chiswick, stealing £ 1,366 : a man, 40 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, stout, no whiskers, stoops when walking; dressed in dark brown frock coat and vest, black cloth trousers, side spring boots and black hat, and carried a light summer overcoat and black glazed bag ; last seen at Barking, Essex.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, September 16. Absconded on the 9th instant, from 115, New Bond- street, stealing £ 16 6s. lljd. in gold, silver, and copper Monies; a Post Office Order for 8s. 6d., made payable to J. Eade, 48, Catherine- street, Winchester; and a Cheque for £ 10 16s,, drawn by A. P. Taylor, Abery House, Notting- hill: a man, 34 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion and hair, sandy moustache ; dressed in dark coat and trousers, drab vest, black hat, and carried a grey overcoat on his arm ; his wife resides at Be llington Colliery, near Morpeth, North- umberland.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, September 16. Absconded on the 10th instant, from 27, Drury- lane, stealing £ 3 Is., a youth, 16 years of age, 5 feet high, fair com- plexion, brown hair, dark eyes, heavy eyebrows, lisps, and hesitates when speaking ; dressed in black cloth coat and vest, blue cloth trousers, and black cloth cap with peak.— Metropo- litan Police, F Division, September 16. Absconded on the 6th instant from Rottingdean, charged with stealing £ 6 10a., a labourer, from 50 to 66 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, light complexion, grey hair, and slight figure ; dressed in a brown velveteen jacket, cord trousers, worn at one knee, black billycock hat, and lace- up boots. He is well known about Sandhurst, and also about Findon and Angmeering, in West Sussex. Information to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Lewes, or to Police Constable Holland, Rottingdean, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 16. Description of HOW WATSON, a tramping watch and clock maker, late of the parish of St. Michael, in the liberty of St. Alban's, who is charged with stealing, on the 3rd ultimo, a silver Watch, the property of Joseph Seabrook, which was entrusted to him to repair: about 50 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, has several burn marks on forehead, and dressad in black frock coat, waistcoat, and trousers, and gene- rally wears a white apron : he has since been seen at Watford. It is supposed that he has committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Inspector Bourne, Police Station, Hemel Hempsted, or to Police Constable Orchard, Leverstock Green, Hertford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, September 16. Stolen from a bed- room in the beerhouse of Charles Buck- ley, at St. Lawrence, near Ramsgate, between 8 and 9 p. m. on the 13th inst.: £ 52 10s. in Gold ; £ 7 in Silver ; 1 old- fashioned silver Watch, gold plated, maker Edmund, West Strand, London, gold Albert Chain, snake pattern attached; 1 gold keeper Ring, chased and much worn ; 1 old silver Tea Spoon ; and 1 cameo Brooch. Stolen on the 7th instant, from the Refuge for Fallen Women, 160, New Kent- road, £ o in Gold. By two females : one 22 yeais of age, 5 feet high, dark complexion, black hair, light eyes ; dressed in a light cotton print frock, black silk jacket, hlack velvet hat with drab feather. The other shore and very stout ; dressed in a lilac cotton frock, hlack silk jacket, black bat and blue feather.— Metropolian Police, P Divison, September 13. Stolen on the 6th instant, from the Military Train Stables, Woolwich Barracks, a bay Mare, 7 years old, 15 hands 2 ins. high No. 1068, star on forehead and near fetlock ; a regimental Saddle, Brid e, and Sword. Description ot JOHN LEIGH, labourer, of Williton, who absconded on the 7th instant, charged with embezzling about £ 10, the mouies of Francis Greenstade, of Williton, tallow chandler: a'> out 34 years of age, 6 feet high, light complexion and hair ( generally parted behind), walks erect, and is rather deaf ; dressed in a dark oat, vest and trousers, white straw hat with blue ribbon, leather leggings with springs, and heavy nailed boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Mear, Willilon, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- sireet, September 13. A warrant has been issued against ALFRED JOHNSON, late of Brighton, labourer, charged with embezzling money of his master, Thomas Chandler, dairyman, St. James- street, Brighton. He is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather stoutly built, dark sandy hair, full whiskers, and full red fttckled tace ; dressed iu light brown check trousers, either a blouse or an old Black coat, old side- spring boots, and drab felt hat; is likely to enlist in tbe army. A warran- has also been issued against STEPHEN MARTIN, late of Brighton, journeyman baker, charged with emb.- zzling money ot his master, Charles Rosamond, baker, York- road North, Brighton. He is about 20 years of age, middle height, dark hair, moustache and imperial, no front teeth ; dressed in light tweed coat, wbite or brown felt hat, red and blue necktie, and side- spring boots, with toe caps. Information to be given to Chief Constable White Brighton.— Bow- street, Sep. ember 13. Abscon led the 6th inst., from his employer, Hatton- garden, embt zzling 20s. and stealing two parcels of Newspapers : a youth, 17 years of age, pale complexion, long thin visage, dark hair ; dressed in black cloth coat and trousers, blucher boots, and black cap, all old and dirty.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, September 13. Absconded on the 7ih insiant, from the Star public house, Wellington- street, Woolwich, stealing £ 50 in Silver: a man, 20 years of Hge, 5 feet 4 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair, grev ey- s ; dressed in daik clothes.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, September 13. Absconded since the 9th instant, charged on a warrant with embezzling £ o6 and upwards, of his employers, Messrs. Morice and Dixey. insurai. ee brokers, 143, Cannon street : WILLIAM HENRY WEBBE PORTER, clerk, late of No. 2l, Marian- villas, Laosdowne- road, Dalston, 36 years of age, about 6 feet 6 inches high, rather stout build, fair com- plexion, liijht hair, wniokers, beard and moustache, pale blue eyes, and discoloured teeth ; dressed in a dark frock coat, light coloured trouseis, and black hat, wears a silver hunting watch and gold chain, and sometimes a diamond ling. A reward of £ 20 will be paid to any person giving such information us shall lead to his apprehension. Information to be given to Inspector Hamilton, City ot London Police, Detective Depart- ment, Old Jewry, E C.— Bow- street, September 13. Absconded, charged on a warrant with stealing the sum of £ 350, WILLIAM JOHN BARRETT, late of 8 Bell- yard, Doctors Commons, Kensington Gate, and Albany Villas, Brighton, solicitor : 47 yeais of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers, grey eyes, jaw underhung ; dressed fashion- ably. Information to be given to Iospector Hamilton, City of London Police, Detective Department, Old Jewry, E. C. — Bow- street, September 13. Description of a man who is charged with stealing, from a common lodging house at Honiton, on the night of the 10th instant ( the property of S. Gosse, a travelling musician): £ 29 5s. 9d., principally in Gold ; a pair of light Trousers ; a silver Geneva Watch, No. 137- 1677 on the outside, outer case is supposed to he of mixed metal ; a pair of blucher Boots with seven holes, and patent leather stitched up the back of each hoot. He is about. 25 years of uge, 5 feet 8 inches high, grey eyes, brown hair, very much sunburnt, and mark on left leg ; he is very likely to be wearing the stolen trousers and boots ; he is a discharged soldier, and recently served in India. In his troupers was found a parchment certificate of discharge from tbe i2' h Regt. oi Foot, dated 1st Sept. 1867, showing that No. 1093, Private THOMAS MURPHY was born in the parish of Kingstown, in the county of Dublin, and that he enlisted in the above regiment on the 28th Deo. 1861, at the age of 21 years, and served in the army 3 years 48 days, but the cause of his discharge is erased ; dated at Seetabore, India, 18th June, 1866; countersign d at Portsmouth, 1st Sept., 1867.
