CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with. Offences who are known hut not in custody, and a Description of those who are not Known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible of Property tha* f has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4457 FRIDAY. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworu to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As BO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor midst be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. Wr.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. pale and delicate looking ; dressed in a dark dress with light stripes, wore a string of pearls round her neck. Information to be given to Chiet Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton. — Bow- street, September 2. Description of two men who committed a highway robbery and rape on the person of Lousia Turner, at 8 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, on Seal Chart : one about 40 years of age, 6 feet high, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed in a dark coat, trousers and black high crowned hat. The other 5 feet 6 inches high, rather light complexion, and few whiskers ; dressed in sht rt round frock coat, light coloured trousers, black billycock hat, and had the appearance of tramps. Description of property stolen : a Purse containing 5s. 6d., apair of green kid Gloves, and a white pocket Handkerchief. Between 2 and 4' 30 p. m. on the 30th ultimo, the dwelline- house of William Davies, Bach- y- rhew, Llangunllo, Cardigan- shire, farmer, was broken and entered, and two Sovereigns, two Shillings, two Pennies, and a pair of woollen cord 1 rousers, small pattern, man's size, nearly new, stolen therein Supposed by a tramp, 36 to 40 years of age, 6 feet 10 inches to 0 feet high, stout built ; dressed as a working man, in a long velveteen jacket, corduroy trousers, and dark cap. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING: Description of MARTIN MONAGHAN, against whom a warrant is issued, chargipg him with stabbing and wounding Thomas Lyons, on the night of the 2nd instant, in the ' York ' tavern, York- street, Leeds : he is a labourer, about 2fl years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, long thin face, sup- posed to have a black eye ; dressed in a dirty cap, white smock or jacket, cord trousers, and strong lace- up boots. Informa- tion to be given to Chief Constable Wetherell, Town Hall, Leeds. — Bow- street, September G. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING About 6 p. m. on the 27th instant, a hay stack standing near a farm house on Dunnington Common, in the parish of Dunnington, the property of Richard Jackson, farmer was discovered to be on fire, and wasjpartly consumed, supposed to be the work of an incendiary ; a man of the following description was begging at the house a few minutes before the fire, and is suspected : about 30 years of age, 6 feit 8 inches high, light hair Bnd ginger whiskers ; dressed in dark cap, light coloured jacket, and trousers. EOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Stolen on the 3id instant, from the person of a gentleman at Warwick Races, a gold hunting Watch, No. 2 | 3861, makers' names Baraud and Lund. £ 10 reward will be paid on the recovery of the watch and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to Head Constable Hickling, War- wick.— Bow- street, September 6. Absconded from Halifax, on the 2nd instant, charged with stealing from the person of James Butler, at the Fly Waterworks, Warley Moor, a silver verge Watch ( since recovered), a tramp- ing navvy, about 30 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair, whiskers under chin, and cut mark near the left corner of mouth ; dressed in old faded blue monkey jacket, torn at elbows, old moleskin troupers, old boots cut at toes, and black cloth cap. lie will probably seek employment at some public railway or waterworks. Stolen from the person, in the borough of Tunbridge, about9 p. m. on the 29th ultimo, a double- cased silver Geneva Watch, ' No. 14' and ' Maidstone' inside, and £ 4 10s. in Money Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Tunbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen, about 9 p. m. on the 1st instant, from the person of a gentleman, at the Railway Station, Eccles, a gold duplex chronometer Watch, chased edges, ' R. F.' engraved on back, maker Batty, Manchester, No. 2437. Any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the watch shall receive £ 6 reward, on application to the Police at Eccles, or to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, Kiig- Btreet, Manchester.— Bow- street, September 4. Stolen on the 3rd instant, from a gentleman at the races at Warwick, an old fashioned silver hunting Watch, erest— a leopard's head, very faint, maker Hamlet, London. £ 3 re- ward will be given on the recovery of the watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, at Brighton, on the evening of the 29t. li ultimo : a gold open- face lever Watch, enamel ed dial, makers Berrand and Lund, Cornhill, London, No. 4308. By a female, about 20 years of age, middle height, Stolen by means of housebreaking on the 2nd instant, from the cottage of Adam Smith, Lineham, Oxon, a silver Geneva Watch, No. 22429 | 9423, maker C. F. Jacobs, Geneva, a pair of dark t" eed Trousers, dark grey tweed Vest, a pair of woman's kid top Boots, lace up inside, nearly new, and 3s. 2d. Supposed by a tramp, about 40 yeats of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, sandy hair and whiskers ; dressed in a dirty slop, bad shoes, and walks as if foot sore. Pollock, Basinghall- street, Leeds, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : a pair of c'aret plaid or mixture cloth Trousers and Vest ; a pair of black trousers, broad black braid down the sides; a neiv blue cloth Pea Jacket, with velvet collar, facings, nd breiJed scarlet lining, large black buttons, three pockets outside, one ii. side left breast ; an old ditto ditto, velvet collar, three pockets outside, on © iooidc left V> rcaot, gi- ey plaid lining, end large black buttons ; a Coffee Pot, a Tea ditto, a Sugar Basin, an Egg Stand for ( i eggs or more ( all electro- plated); a Carriage Rug, scarlet on one side and black on the other, colouied boi'Jer. On the night of the 2nd instant, Hartpury House, near Gloucester, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therein : A number of large and email silver Forks, with crest— a lion with battle- axe. A number of table and dessert Spoons. A number of gravy Spoons, two crests— stag's head and lion. A number of tea Spoons. 6 egg Spoons, with crests. 1 fluted soup Ladle. 0 round salt Cellars, with two crests, stag's head and lion. 4 oblong ditto. 2 Salvers' each with two crests. 1 large cruet Stand, with two crests. 2 Teapots and 1 Coffeepot, with crests. 1 silver Saucepan, with crests. 1 silver Egg. 1 silver jug Cover, with a fox's head as a handle. 2 wine Slides, with crest. 2 silver Mugs, one with inscription, ' Maria Canning, the gift of her cousin, T. W. Gilford.' 1 butter dish Cover, with cresf. 1 fish Slice and Fork, and several smaller articles. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such in- formation as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders ; value will also be given for any part of the property recovered. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, September 4. On the night of the 1st instant, Highnam Court, near Gloucester, was broken and entered, and stolen therein : 1 flat silver Inkstand, with pen trays, places for two ink bottles, silver tops, and a raised candlestick on a vase in the centre. 1 bedroom flat Candlestick, silver. 1 silver Tea Spoon, crest three battle axes. Silver Gothic Mountings, Lock, Hinge, monogram ' TGP|' from a small oak box. 10s. in Money. £ 10 reward will he paid to any person who will give such in- formation as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Full value will also be given for any part of the property recovered. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Gritfin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, September 4. HORSE AND CATTIE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from Welland, the property of Abraham Watkins, a half bred 2 year old thick cab Colt, bright bay colour, 14 hands high, long mine and tail' k 1 g", unbroken but very quiet, answers to the name of ' Inkernan.' Information to he given to Checketts Upton- on- Severn, Worcestershire - Description of a man who broke and entered the cottage of William Groom, near Horsey Toll, Whittlesey, on the 17th ultimo, and stole a Shawl, which has been found pledged at Peterborough, in the name of Walter Miller : about 35 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, broad face, large scar on left cheek ( which he says was kicked by a horse), stoutly built) ; dressed in black cap, grey coat, cord tiousers, and red shirt; had a white slop with him. He has been working in Wisbech Feu, harvesting, and after quarrelling with his mate, absconded on the 26th ultimo, without taking all his money, and went in the diiection of Peterboiough. Information to be given to Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, Cambs.— Bow- street, September 4. Superintendent;- Bov- s\, Sep'^ i Fouud, supposed to have heen stolen, about June la- t, at Severn Stoke, a Welsh ewe Sheep and Lamb, marked with pitch ' R. H.' on each side, and a ruddle mark down the back. Information to be given to Superintendent Checketts, Upton- on- Severn, Worcestershire.— Bow itrcct, September 6. Suppoied to have been stolen during the night of the 31st ultima, from a field at Birstal ; a dappled grey horse Pony, about 14 Hands high, 5 years old, 1 > ng switch tail and mane, shod and in g< od condition. Information to be given to super- intendent Martin, West Riding Constabulary, Dewsbury. Bow- street. September 6. Stolen from a tieta at tvuuuu inmu, m aie parish of Colva, Radnorshire, between the 21st and the 28th ultimo, ten fat wether Sheep, the property of Mr. J. Harper, 2 years old, pitch marked ' J. M.' on both hips, or the Radnor forest breed, and have different ear marks. Mr. J. Harper will pay £ 5 reward to any persm who will give such information as shall lead to the appiehension and conviction of tbe offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superintendent Massey, Presteign ; or to Police Constable Weale, New Radnor.— Bow- street, September 6. Stolen from a field at Hirwain, Glamorganshire, on the Dight of the 26th ultimo, a bay Horse, 4 years old, about 15 hands high, black legs, mane, and tail, the property of Mr. D. Bevan, grocer. A man, rather short in stature and middle- aged, dressed in dark suit of Welsh- made clothes, was seen in the field on the above night, and is suspected. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Wrenn, Merthyr- Tydfil, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, September 4. Description of a man charged with stealing three Welsh Ponies ( since recovered), from a field at Drayton Parslow, Bucks, on the 22nd ultimo: about 24 years of age, 6 feet 4 inches high, long brown hair, thin whiskers inclined to sandy, slovenly appearance ; dressed in an old black cloth coat, cord trousers very ragged at the bottoms, new black cloth cap with Scotch plaid band and leather peak, and a new pair of women' 6 leather boots, riveted brass eyelet- holes, three rows of stitches aero s the fronts, high heels, nailed all round with small nails, known as * flat tops.' He is a native of Norfolk, aud attends fairs with horse- dealers; he is noisy and very hoarse. Information to be given to Superintendent Breary, Fenny Stratford, or to Sergeant Chaplin, Police Station, Winslow, Bucks.— Bow- street, September 4. Supposed to have been stolen, between 7 p. m. on the 25th and 8 a. m. on the 27th ultimo, from the Castlefield, Reigate, a chesnut coloured Horse, white streak down the face, graze on the off shoulder, about 14^ hands high, the property of Richard Jordan, butcher, Reigate. Information to be given to Superintendent Rogers, Reigate, Surrey.— Bow- street, Sep• tember 4. Supposed to have been stolen, from the Windmill, Epsom Common, during the night of the 1st instant, a Horse, 12 years old, about 15 hands high, light brown or bay, with a few grey hairs on the bip, a white saddle mark on the near side, both knees chipped, switch tail, and in good condition. Information to be given to the Police at Epsom, Surrey.— Bow- street, September 4. Left the ' Queen's Head' Inn, Hoancastle, during the fair on the 17th ultimo, and not since claimed, supposed to have been stolen, a brown horse with black legs, white sahdle marks on back, scar on off side fore foot, ated, nearly 16 hands high, thick about the hocks, and is a good looking powerful carriage horse. Information to be given te Superintendent Thorsby, Horncastle.— Bow- street, September 4. Supposed stolen during the night of the 1st instant, from Castlemorton Common, a brown half- bred Mate, the property of Mr. Clutterbuck, about 15 hands high, 5 years old, white in the forehead very much in the shape of a heart, white hind legs, burn marked ' J. C.' on the hoofs of the fore feet and one hind foot, long mane and tail of russet colour. Also a black Mare, the property of Mr. Coulson, o< Castle- morton, cart breed, about 16 hands high, rising 7 y> ar6 old, a white mark on the forehead and on the nose, the off hind foot 6 P O L I C E G A Z E T T E, September 16. is white to tbe fetlock, rather wide in the ears, two small sub- stances on the face, goes rather wide behiud, long mare and tail. Found on the 28th ult., at Milton, adjoining the London- road, and supposed to have been stolen, a light brown Mare, about 16 hands high, 5 years old, white blaze down the face, near hind fetlock whi'e, thick mane and tail, cut square with the hock, hair rubbed off shoulders by collar, aud in good condition ; also a dark brown Mare, 15^ hands high, about 4 years old, White blaze down the face, black legs, tail cut square with the hfick. Information to be given to Inspector Hedley, Newport Pagnell, Bucks.— Bow- street, September 2. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT- Absconded on the 29th ultimo, from 62, Judd- street, Euston- road, stealing various sums of Money : a baker, 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, complexion, hair and eyes dark, and small dark whiskers ; dressed in light clothes and Cap.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 6. Stolen on the 28th ultimo, from 2, Lower Uxbridge- street, Notting- bill, a silver Geneva Watch, black Guard, gold Key, and small gold Button with clasp attached ; a scarf King, Indian make ; 1 pair light cloth Trousers and Vest; £ 2 14s. in Gold and Stiver : by a shoemaker, 26 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, light brown hair, and bushy whiskers ; dressed in a long brown coat, black mixture vest, light cord trousers, and round felt hat.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, September 6. Stolen on the 1st instant, from 35, Portland- street, St. James's : 1 black Paletot ; 12 pairs of striped cotton Socks ; 24 white pocket Handkerchiefs, coloured borders ; 1 Pawn- broker's Duplicate, Mont- de- piete, Rue Montmartre, Paris, for a gold Watcb, pledged for 400 francs; 14 Napoleons; 4 boxes of Cigirs. By a man, 34 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, very thin, dark complexion, black hair, red moustache, blue eyes, bald on top ot head, small wort on right temple ; dressed in pepper- and- salt coloured trousers, mended on right thigh, small black deers'alker hat, and button boots. Stated he was going to Belgium.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, September 6. Absconded on the 2nd instant, from 8, Essex- street, Isling- ton, embezzling £ 20 : a man, 45 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and hair ( long), and hump on right side of back ; dressed in light clothes.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, September 6. Absconded from Wolverhampton on the 26th ultimo, stealing and taking with him about £ 16 12s. in Gold and Silver, a gold Watch and Chain, and a black cloth monkey Jacket, HENRY LEVI, a Polish Jew, a glazier : he is about 24 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, light curly hair and whiskers, two sore places on left side of head ; dressed in a brown monkey jacket, plaid trousers, and billycock hat. Information to be given to Captain Segrave, Chiet Con- stable, Wolverhampton, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow street, September 6. Absconded from Bridgwater on the morning of the 27th ultimo, charged with stealing from his lodging a single- case English lever silver Watch, No. ( supposed) 1060 ; a new fancy satin Scarf, blue ground, yellow figured, and black spots ; and £ 1 Is. 6d. in gold and silver, CHARLES HOLMES, alias BALE, a tailor, speaks the Staffordshire dialect, age about 53, £ ft. 6 or 6 in. high, stout build, full features, fresh complexion, brown hair turning grey, small grey whiskees reaching to the cheek bones, and very talkative ; dressed in brown loose coat, dirty drab cloth trousers, black silk bat much worn, blucher boots. Information to be given to Superintendent Lear, Bridgwater, Somersetshire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, September 6. Absconded on the 28th ultimo, from 48. Charlotte- street, Fitzroy- square, stealing £ 30 in Gold, a £ 10 Bank of Englaud Note, a Cheque on tbe City Bank for £ 20 10s., aud two Cheques on the Margate Bank, one for £ 10, the other for £ 7 odd : a clerk, 20yeais of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, fair hair and complexion ; dressed in melton coat, dark vest, light trous- rs, and black hat.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, September 6. Stolen between the 25th July and tbe 25th ultimo, from 6, Thetford- place, Salisbury- row, a pair of calico Sheets, two feather Pillows, a Blanket, a white Counterpane, a diaper Tablecloth, and three Towels. By a man and woman : the man 45 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers ; dressed in black frock coat, brown striped trousers, blucher boots, and black hat : the woman, 50 years of age, middle height, sallow complexion ; dressed in striped mohair gown, black shawl, black tulle bonnet, and side- spring buote.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, Sptember 6. Stolen on the 28> h ultimo, from the stable of the White Horse iun, Bridge, Kent, a double- rein curb riding Bridle, nearly new, ' Thearsby, Canterbury,' on the moutbpiece. By a man, 30 years of age, about 5 feet high, has a scratoh on the nose, thick short neck, round tull face, very dark complexion, black hair, and very dirty appearance ; dressed in a dark low- crowned hat, dark coat, diny dark check or plaid trousers fitting tight to the legs ; he is an ostler, frequ. nts stable yards in the neighbourhood of racecourses, and is employed by the jockeys and ostlers on race days. He was dischaiged from Salop Gam on the 31st ultimo, where he had undergone seven days imprisonment, and is suspected of haviug committed offences elsewhere. Says he is a native of Kirton End, near Boston, but left there about Bix years ago, and since that time has resided at South* ick, Shoreham, Sussex. THOMAS WOOD, No. 7370, 27 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, ruddy complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, speck left eye, boil maik right shoulder- blade, pockpitted; was sentenced to 6 years penal servitude at Liverpool Assizes, for robbery with violence; his sentence will expire on 7th August, 1868. On the morning of the 28th ultimo, at 6 a. m. the, body of a newly bom female infant, was found in a stack- yard in the parish of Spittlegate, Grantham, wrapped in an old brown alpaca skirt, an old blue and yellow spotted print, apron with bib, then stitched up with b ack thread, a small white napkin apparantly made from an old table cloth was partly crammed in the mouth. An inquest was held on the 28th ultimo, and on the 2nd instant, and further adjourned until the 30tb. Missing from his home, a youth named MATTHEW MIDDLEWOOD, he was last seen at the York Railway Station, between 4 and 6 p m., on the 10th ultimo, when he told his friends that he was starting for home by the Harro- gate train : he is 16 years of age ( looks older), tall, strongly built, good looking, light brown hair, blue eyes, well educated, and took first class honours at tbe Cambridge Middle Class Examination, held at Leeds, in 1866. Had on when he left home, black coat and vest, daik mixture trousers, elastic side boots, blue striped necktie, and a round black hat. Wore a small silver lever Watch, No. 13160, made by Barmby, of Hull, a gold scaif pin, with large yellow stone, and gold sbeve links. Had veiy little money in his posses- iion, and no other cloihes but whnt he was wearing, and which were in good order when he left home, but must now be in bad condition.
