The Names of Persons charged, with Offences ivho are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, ivith every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4443 MONDAY, AUGUST 5, 1867. T'oStlce.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. * » * Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that au Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As BO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all betters addressed to the Editor most be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from tbe regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. Busfield to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender and restoration of the watch. Information to be given to Superintendent Bill, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 31. About 12 p. m on the 29th instant, JOSEPH MARVEL, of Heat on, delver, was returning home from Shipley Feast in a state of intoxication, when he was attacked by three men at Firth Carr, in the township of Heaton, who knocked him down, and robbed him of an old- fashioned verge Watch, with loose case, white dial, gold hands. ' J. Marvel' engraved on outside of inner case, had a strong steel curb Chain attached, with common brass Key and Seal ( white glass). Information to be given to Superintendent Bull, West Riding Constabulary, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 31. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING, PETER STEWART, crofier, raiding at Lots of Balli- ward, near Grantown, having failed to appear on the 30th ultimo ( before the Sheriff Court at Inverness, to answer a charge of assault by stabbing and previous conviction, a wairanthas been granted for his rt- apprehension : about 41 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, round face, sallow complexion, dark jjrown hair, brown whiskers, turn- up nose, full cheeks, good teeth, blue eyes, stout built, slightly stoops when walking, speaks English pretty well with the Gaelic accent; dressed in a suit of dark home- made tweed, strong tacketed boots, and felt bat. He is likely to try and get shipped for one of the British colonies. Information to be given to Procurator- Fiscal Stewart or to Chief Constable Murray, Inverness.— Bow street, August 2. Further information respecting the man who committed a murderous assault on Mr. Edwin Vaughan, watchmaker and jeweller, No. 25, Bath- street, Bristol, on the evening of the 4th instant: £ 100 reward will be paid to any person who shall' give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender, viz.: £ 60 by the jewellers of Bristol, and £ 60 by Her Majesty's Government ; and the Secretary of State for the Home Department will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the person who actually committed the assault), who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the like result ; also £ 60 will be paid by Mr. Vaughan for information that shall lead to the recovery of the stolen property, or in proportion thereto. Description of GEORGE COWAN, provision dealer, who absconded from Middlesborough in June last, charged witu feloniously uttering a forged Bill of Exchange for £ 20, well . knowing the same to be a forgery : about 43 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark hair and whiskers, proportionate figure. Supposed to be in the North; is well known at Leeds, Newcastle, and Sunder- land. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Saggerson Middlesborough, Yorkshire, who holds a warrant for hii apprehension— Bow street, July 29. liOBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON Stolen from the person of John Gates, while drunk and asleep at Tibberton, between 9 and 12 p. m. on the 31st ult., a double- cased silver verge Watch, No. 4264, silver Guard with two small Shells and a small steel Hammer attached. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Superintendent Richardson, or to Sergeant Howells, Wellington, Salop.— Bow- street, August 6. Stolen on the evening of the 30th ultimo, from the person of a gentleman in Brighton, a gold Geneva Watch, rather old and worn, filagree work on dial, a twisted gold Albert Chain, 8 Locket with two miniatures, a gold Seal with cornelian stone, and a Half- guinea attached. By a young woman, rather tall light hair ; had on a black cloak made of light material. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, August 2. Stolen from the dwelling- house of Johu Downs, at the township of South Skirlaugh : a silver Watch, maker Jobson, London, No. 42486 ; a ditto, maker Jackson, Goole, No. 63038 ; a pair of men's Trousers, dark and light stripes, darned on knee. Supposed by two tramps who had been seen in the neighbourhood, and who went in the direction of Hull: one, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, light hair, stout made, very bowlegged ; dressed in black cloth suit of clothes, low- crowned hat, and light necktie : the other, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, slender made; dressed in greycoat and trousers, round bat, and strong heavy boo's. Information to be given to Super- intendent Wright, Ea* t Riding Constabulary, Police Station, Leven, near Beverly, Yorkshire. — Bow- strcct, August 5. During the night of the 30th ultimo, the house of Mrs. Mills, West Dean, near Chichester, was broken into, and the following articles stolen therein : 3 Sheds, 4 Chemists, 7 Table Cloths, 2 pairs of D. awirs, 6 Chamber Towels, 4 glass Cloths, and 13 Table Napkins, all marked ' II. P.', 4 Aprons. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Pratt, Chichester.— Bow- street, August 5. Description of HENRY EVANS, alias MILLARD, alias CRUMP, lite of the parish of Dawley, Salop, puldler, who has absconded, charged with breaking into the dwelling- bouse of Edward Meyrick, of Cleeton Hills, near Much Wenloek, between 8 a. m. and 4 p m. on the 29th ultimo, and stealing therelrom 30;. in Silver : about 26 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark hair, little or no whiskers; dressed in a black cloth cap with peak, dirty moleskiu or grey jicket, dirty moleskin trousers, and when l ist seen was wearing two vests, one white, and the other black ; he is well kco JVU at Horse- hays, Dawley, Stirchley, and Oakengates, and was seen near Stirchley on the 1st instant, ^ oing in the direction of Oaken- gates. Information to be given to Police Constable Turner, Police Station, Much Wenlock, Salop, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 5. About 3 a. m. on the 31st ultimo, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Scott, innkeeper, Keswick, was broken into by means of putting the latcli of tbe front window back, opening the sash, and entering the pantry, and stealing the following property: 17 silver Table Spoons: 12 silver Tea Spoons; 12 silver Egg Spoons ; 1 silver Salt Spoon ; 36 silver Table Forks ; 1 silver Fish Knife ; 1 silver Fish Fork ; and 2 silver Tureens; all marked ' J. S.;' also a Missionary BJX contain- ing some money, the amount not known. Information to be given to Superintendent Robinson, Cockermouth, or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, Aug. 2. During the night of the 30th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Edgar Blytn, of Lyng, was broken into, and about £ 7 in Gold and Silver, and an old fashioned double- cased silver Watch, with Roman figures, and • Dublin' underneath maker's name, stolen therefrom. By a man who was advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13tli May last, as a deserter from the 64th Regiment of Foot: 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, and fresh complexion ; dressed, when last seen, in a blue pilot reefing jrcket, blue cloth trousers, white slop, and dark cap w. th peak ; has the appearance of a fisher- man. Information to be given to Inspector Bouttell, Reepham, Norfolk.— Bow- street, August 2. On the morning of the 27th instant, the house of the Rev. A. Gordon, of Newtimber, Sussex, was broken into, and the following articles stolen therefrom : two Bilver fruit Spoons, handles ornamented, engraved two melons and a pineapple, stamped in the bowl, which is lined with gold. Information to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Lewes, or to Sergeant Baldwin, Preston, near Brighton.— Bow- street, July 29. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found, supposed to have been stolen, a brown mare Pony, aged, brokeu knees, white blaze down the face. Information to be given to Superintendent Pratt, Chichester,— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from a Btable at Potwell Farm, near Cosham, during the night of the 31st ultimo, the property of Mr. James Chandler, a light brown cob Mare, 6 years old, about 14 hands high, near knee recently broken, shoulders have been galled a little. Information to be given to Superintendent Drew, Hants Constabulary, Fareham.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from a field in the parish of Wootton, on the 1st ins. a brown horse Pony, about 13 hands high, aged, switch tail, the hair has lately been cut from the top of the head, and is in low condition, the property of Thomas Little. Information to be given to Superintendent Thorsby, Barton- upon- Humber, or to Sergeant Foster, Ulceby, Lincolnshire.— Buio- st., August 5. Stolen from a farm, in the parish of Steep, on the 24th ultimo, a black mare Pony, aged, about 12 bands high, branded on the near side with the letters ' J. B.,' tail cu'square, hog mane, and in good condition. Information to be given to Superintendent Longland, Hants Constabulary, Petersfield.— Bow- street, August 5. Stolen from Buryfield, in the parish of Newport Pagnell, between the 26th ultimo and the morning of the 2nd instant, a black Mare, about 14 hands high, aged, chipped knees, a little white on the hind fetlock joints, and a small saddle mark on the back ; the property of the Rev. M. C. Barton, of Sherington, Bucks. Information to be given to Inspector Hedley, Police Station, Newport Pegnell, Bucks. — Bern- street, August 6. Description of a man charged at Cheltenham, Gloucester- shire, with stealing 12 Sheep, on the 27th ultimo, from the Leigh Farm, and which were recovered on the following day : he is about 35 years of age, 6 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion, little or no whiskers, has the appnrance of a dealer, and looked very ill ; dressed in a long daik blue coat with pockets outside, corduroy breeches, kerseymere leggings, and a low- crowned felt hat. It is strongly suspected this is the same man whose description was advertised in the Police Gazette of the 29th ultimo, charged with stealing 49 Lambs at Kingsheath, near Birmingham. Information to be given to Superintendent Day, Police Station, Cheltenham, Gloucester- shire.— Bow- street, August 2. Stolen from a field in the township of Childer Thornton, Cheshire, on the 18th instant, a dark bay Mare, aged, about 16 hands high, branded on the fore hoof with the figures 78 or 87. Stolen during the night of the 28th instant, from a field at Shipbourne, Kent, a black Mare, 14 or 15 hands high, white spot on back, about 10 years old, rather thick in the wind, bang tail, carries her head very high when trotting, the pro- perty of Miss S. Moyer. Information to be giteu to Super- intendent Dance, Tonbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from a field at Great Mill, in the parish of Llantris- sant, Glamorganshire, on the 17 th instant, a dark iron grey mare Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands high, white spot on the forehead, and short tail, the property of Mr. Richard Evans, of Great Mill. Information to be given to Mr. Richard Evans, or to Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Pontypridd.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from a field at Keighley, between 10 p. m 24th and 6 a. m. 25th instant, five fat Sheep, good size, well bred, marked down face with red, each has a'spot of red paint on back, the property of Mr. George Pearson, butchej. Information to be given to Superintendent Gill, West Riding Constabulary, Keighley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen from a meadow in the parish of Eversley, Hants, on the night of tbe 23rd instant, a dark bay nag Horse, 7 years old, 15 hands high, in good condition, small star on forehead, long mane and tail, black legs, large lump near the hind fetlock. Supposed to have been sold at Reading Fair. A reward of £ 8 8s. will be paid on the apprehension and con- viction of the offender. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Howard, Odiham, Hants.— Bow- street, July 31. Stolen on the morning of the 27th instant, from a field in South Weald, near Brentwood, a dark bay mare Pony, nearly 13 hands high, 4 years old, white slip in the face, very well bred, flat Bided, and goose rumped. By two young men, about 5 feet 7 inches high ; dressed in blue coats, cord trousers, and caps; had the appearance of low horse dealers. They were traced going in the direction of Bishop Stratford. Informa- tion to be given to the Constabulary Station, Brentwood, Essex.— Bow- street, July 29. Further information respecting the forty- nine Lambs stolen from the Haunch Farm, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 26th instant : the Lambs have all been recovered by the Police, and were stolen by a man of tbe following description : about 40 years of a° e, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout build, face appeared sunburnt, brown hair, and little or no whiskers ; dressed in a low- crowned broad- brimmed black hat, blue pilot cloth overcoat butttoned up to the chin, appeared to have leather leggings on, and carried an umbrella had the appearance of a working farm bailiff. The reward previously offered will be paid upon conviction. Information to be given to Superintendent Humphries, King's Heath, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, July 29. Stolen on the night of the 25th instant, from a field at Henton, in the parish of Chinnor, Oxon, 2 half- bred Oxford- shire down ewe Lambs, marked on the left side with a star with the letter ' G.' in centre, the property of E. Griffin Esq., of Towersey, Bucks. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Seers, Police Station, Watlington, Oxon.— Bow- strect, July 29. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT Description of JAMES BROOKS, who is charged with stealing, on the 14th ultimo, from John Gill, of Tansley, a pair of moleskin Trousers, a black cloth Vest, a German silver Penholder, and 8d. in Money: about 6 feet 6 inches high. a P O L I C E GAZETTE. August 19. dark hair, eyes, and complexion, no whiskers, having shaved them off a few days previous to the robbery ; dretstd in a rough black pilot jacket, will be weatt- ur tQe stolen trousers, as he left his own behind, black and whiro straw hat, strong navvy boots ; has been in the array, served in the 46th Regi- ment in the Crimea ani India, and is su- pected of being a deserter. Stolen on the 1st instant, from a silk mercers at St. Leonard's- on Sea, the Materials for three silk Dresses, one black with gold stripes, anothtr black with white Btripes, and the other black with satin figures. By three women : one about 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, black hair and eyes, very stout; dressed in a black bonnet, black silk mantle, and violet coloured di'e; s. Another about 20 years of age ; dres> ed in a black bonnet, and black dress trimmed with green. Aud the other about 26 years of age; dressed iu a black bonnet. Absconded on the 24th ultimo, from No. 110, Fulham- road, Brompton, embezzliug various sums of iVlouey : a youth, 17 years of ago, 5 fe t 5 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair and eyes; dressed as a baker.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 2. Absconded on the 27th ultimo from No. 82, White Lion- street, Clerkenwell, stealing six pairs of women's Boots ( five cashmere tops, one meinel), all military heels, u man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, swarthy complexion, and dressed in dark coat and vest, tweed trousers, fenian hat, blucher boots, all old.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, Avgvst 2. Stolen about 4 p. m. on the 30i, h ultimo, from a bed- room, No. 62, Marine- parade, Brighton : 1 Ring with hair, set rouud with diamonds, ' Windus' inside. 1 small Ring, set with a diamond. 1 mourning Ring, get, with five pearls, ' Henry Drum- mond' engraved iAside. 1 stuall gold guard Ring with hair in centre, ' Morris' engraved it side. 3 hair Kings, set in gold. 1 large mourning Ring with onyx stone, ' Edward Morris' engraved inside. 1 silver Penholder with Mordan's gold Pen. 2 Eye- glasses on black elastic, one set in silver. 1 jet Necklace, flat pattern. I strand of Jets with a gold book Locket with hair set on both sides. 5 plated Tops from the glasses in a dressing- case. A man of the following description went to the house, and said he had dropped a florin down the area, and whilst the servant was gone to look for it the robbery was committed : middle height, proportionate make, dark complexion, sujposrd to have a moustache ; dressed in black coat, light trousers, and high black hat. Information to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, August 2. Absconded from Cambridge on the 28th ultimo, WM. SMITH, charged with embezzlement : he is about 24 years of age, 5 feet 9* iuches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, small whiskers inclined to ginger, scar on left cheek ; is a carpenter by trade. Information to be given to Inspector Robinson, Cambridge.— Boio- streel, August 2. Stolen on the morning of the 22nd ultimo, from a bed- room at Ipstone9, Staffordshire : a silver verge Watch, No. 113, the name ' John Colly ' on the inner case, had a steel Chain and Seal and Key attached ; a calico Shirt with linen plait in front; a flowered silk Pocket- handkerchief; a scarf Pin; a small leather Puis< s and £ 1 10s. lOd. in jnoney. By a man of the following description, who lodged there : about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair, and small dark whiskers * dressed in a dark vest and trousers, Wftok tommy hat, and left without any coat. Informal ion to he given to Sergeant GaUut-, Police Station, Ipstones, Staffordshire.— Bow- ilreet, August 2. Stolen from a dwelling- honse at Burton- on- Trent, on the morning of the 29: h ultimo: a black cloth Coat with two pockets outside, a black cloth single breasted Waistcoat, and a pair of black cloth Trousers, all very much worn ; a short round light coloutfed Jacket; a Waistcoat and a pair of Trou6eTS of the same material; a Chimney- sweeping Machine ; a Brush, Bag, and Cloth ; and a pair of live blue Pigeons, the property of John King, chimney sweep. By a youth, a chimney sweep, who had been lodging in the house : 17 or 18 years of age, short and thin, dark complexion, hair, and eyes ; dressed in round short canvas slop, old black cloth trousers patched on the knees with white calico ( very dirty), black cloth cap with peak and brass button in front ( neatly new), and light lace- up boots. Stated he had a mother residing in Nottingham, and other relatives iu Tamworth. Informa- tion to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Burton- on- Trent, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 2. Description of WILLIAM GOSS, for whose apprehension a warrant is issued on a charge of larceny as a bailee, at Wookey, near Wells, on the 26th ultimo : he is 41 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair and whiskers in- clined to curl and which he genei . lly wears cut short, keen visage, blue or grey eyes, walks erect, very quick in his manner; dressed in a light colou. ad loose coat with velvet collar and pockets at 6ide, black cloth vest, white duck or moleskin trousers, black silk hat; be is a taiior by trade, is a native of Coleford, in Dean forest, and often travels as a tailor and street preacher. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bloxham, Glastonbury, or to the Sergeant of Police, Weils, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, August 2. Absconded from Birmingham, on the 27th instant, charged upon a warrant with embezzling Money belonging to his employer, Mr. Alfred Ash, tin and zinc worker, Birmingham : MICHAEL HANSON, clerk, about 24 years of age, 6 feet 7 or 8 inches high, no whiskers or moustache, brown hair, loDg thin face ; dressed, when last seen, in a long tight- fitting blue cloth coat, light overcoat and trousers, and high dull hat; supposed gone to Borne seaport town for tbe purpose of embarking to America. Absconded from the service of Mr. George Cave, of Neithorp, Oxou, on the 20th instant, ALFRED D. Absconded on the 24th instant, from his employer, Mr. W. V. Oakley, grocer, Birmingham, charged with embezzling various sums of money, ROBERT HILL: he is about 20 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, very pale complexion, very slight whiskers, walks quick and steps short; dressed when last seen in a sort of brown mixture coat ( fashionable make). Supposed accompanied with another man with his wife and two children ; has been engaged as a commission agent, aud is supposed to be going to America.
