Sutfjontg, CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received ir cases of Felony and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed ^ Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with, Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not linown, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The NdfUte of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4428 MONDAY, JULY 1, 1867. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to Mr. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre hended, and the name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As BO charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor mnst be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Fall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 16th instant, at 5- 45 p. m. the body of a newly born male infant, was found in a passage, in Havelock- street, Crewe, wrapped in a piece of calico, part of a woman's dress, then stitched in a piece of old black twill cotton lining, and wrapped in brown paper and tied with white string. An inquest has been held and a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Inspector Wood, Police Office, Crewe.— Bou>- street, June 21. FORGERY. Description of a man who, on the 26th instant, obtained from the Branch Bank of England, at Manchester, a Cheque Book, containing fifty cheques, numbered from * H | P 52851 to 62900, inclusive, and afterwards obtained, by forgery, £ 217 18s. 9d., consisting of four £ 50 Notes, all dated Man- chester, 4th January, 1867, Nos. 14033, 14034, 14035, and 14036, and the remainder in Gold and Silver : he is about 30 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark hair, sallow conaplex'on) small ( if any) whiskers, pockpitted ; dressed in a dark cutaway coat and soft billycock hat. Any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and con- viction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, shall receive £ 20 reward, on application to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, June 26. Further information respecting the man charged with Forgery at Weston- super- Mare, Somersetshire, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 17th instant. He was convicted of fraud at GlaBgow, in the name of BARBER, two years ago. The Watch which was obtained from Mr. Rossiter has been found pledged at Bath, in . the name of James Waldron, 3 Torriano- avenue, Camden- town, London : the person who pledged it carrifd a hazel root stick with knob at the end. Information to be given to Superintendent Gillbanks, Somerset Constabulary, Axbridge, or to Sergeant Hardwick, Weston- super- Mare.— Bou>- street, June 24. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON- Stolen from the person at Bellevue Gardens, on the 15th instant, a silver Geneva Watch, maker Louis Beave, Geneva, has ' William Penny,' scratched inside the case. Information to be given to the Superintendent of the County Police, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- street, June 24. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of the 26th ultimo, the house of Mrs. Boyd, Pakyns, Hurst, was broken and entered, and the], following silver Articles stolen therefrom : 2 Cruet Stands, 1 soup Ladle, 1 Fish Slice, 1 Crumb Slice, 1 pair Asparagus Tongs, 1 pair Sugar Tongs ; 2 Butter Knives, 1 Wine Label ( Port), 1 Tea Scoop, 1 Sugar Sifter, 2 Sauce Ladles, 1 Gravy Spoon, 24 large Spoons, 24 large Forks, 19 Dessert Spoons, 20 Dessert Forks ( small), 17 Tea Spoons, 6 Egg Spoons, 3 Mustard Spoons, 6 Salt Spoons, top of Mustard Pot, 1 small Candlestick, 2 Tops of Inkstands ; the whole of the articles marked with the' Hand and B.', and the 2 cruet Stands have the crest in addition. Information to be given to Superintendent Akehurst, Cuck- field ; to Police Constable Morley, Hurstpierpoint; or at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes.— Bow- street, July 1. Between 8 a. m. and 3 p. m. on the 28th ultimo, the dwelling- house of Michael Wright, labourer. Askew, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered and the following property stolen therefrom : a fourpenny Piece, a woman's black Cap, trimmed with black velvet and purple ribbon, and two canary Birds, one yellow, and the other dun and yellow. Information to be given to Inspector Alderson, or to Superintendent Warmsley, Leyburn, North Riding of York- shire.— Bow- street, July 1. During the night of the 14th ultimo, the ' Chequers' public house, at Kensworth, Kent, was broken and entered, and a . double- barrel Gun stolen, the property of Mr. George Perrey ; the ramrod is without a case on the worm, also the piece is out that holds the ramrod half- way down. Infor- mation to be given to Police Constable Wilson, Kensworth. Herts.— Bow- street, July 1. On the evening of the 22nd instant, a house was broken and entered at Tyler's Causeway, near Hertford, and stolen therefrom : a pair of men's Boots, with brass eyelets, tipped and nailed ; a pair of boy's ditto ; a pair of woman's ditto, with kid tops, and elastic sides ; four white calico Shirts, linen fronts; four white flannel Guernseys; two pairs of lambswool Stockings, large size; two silk pocket Handkerchiefs, one blue with white spots, the other red wiih figured border ; four cotton Handkerchiefs ; a pair of worsted cord Trousers, nearly new ; a pair of dark cloth ditto ; a dark Coat and Vest; two small coloured silk Neckties ; a woollen Comforter, and a quantity of food. By a man, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, no whiskers, long neck, scarrcd very much, when last seen he was wearing the stolen boots and cord trousers, and one of the shirts, his own clothing is in a filthy condition being left behind, he is believed to have severe cuts on his hand by breaking the window. Information to be given to Inspector Hunt, County Police, Hertford.— Bow- st., June 28. Stolen on the night of the 22nd instant, at Eston Junction, near Middlesborough, the property of Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Limited, by means of breaking into the office, lis. 9d. in Copper, about 4s. in postage Stamps, ihree drawer Keys, and a dark grey fancy cloth Coat, man's size, single breasted, black lining, brown bone buttons, one off left wrist, short cutaway laps, false side pockets, one pocket behind, one inside left breBst, and a loop inside the collar. Information to be given to Superintendent Simpson, North Riding Constabulary, Stokesley, or to Inspector Ryder, North Riding Constabulary, South Eston, Middlesborough.— Bow- street, June 2G. During the night of the 19th instant, the dwelling- house of Samuel Pitts, furniture dealer, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : a Ham, about 16Jlbs. weight; and two men's white calico Shirts, linen fronts and wristbands, fasten up behind, one marked ' S. P.' Information to be given to Superintendent Williamson, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 24. Sometime during the night of the 22nd instant, a house in Cardiff, was entered and the following articles stolen there- from : 10 silver tea Spoons, marked ' H,' and two silver table ditto, marked ' D. M. H.' Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stockdale, Cardiff, Glamorganshire.— Bou>- st., June 24. Sometime during the night of the 21st instant, the 1 Black Lion' public- house in Cardiff, was broken and entered, and from 16s to £ 1 in Silver and Copper stolen therefrom. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, Cardiff, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, June 24. Between 11- 16 p. m. on the 19th and 4 a. m. on the 20th instant, the railway station of the North- Eastern Railway Company, at Morpeth, was broken and entered, and the follow- ing property stolen therefrom: £ 12 in Gold, £ 5 lis. 6d. in Silver, 10s. in Copper, two wooden Bowls, and a small Bag, stamped ' Bank of England.' Suspicion is attached to three young men of the following description, who were seen loitering about the station the same evening : one about 24 years of age, 6 feet 8 inches high, fresh complexion, propor- tionate make, round face, no whiskers, sunburnt, light brown hair cut short; dressed in dark coat and vest, dirty moleskin or cord trousers, and black cap with cheesecutter peak : another about 18 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, stout make, sallow complexion, dark hair cut short, dark eyes ; dressed in a dark coat with velvet collar, black vest and trousers, and black cap with cheesecutter peak : the other about 18 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fresh complexion, stout make, brown hair cut short, no whiskers, round face, sunburnt; dressed in a dark coat with black velvet collar, daik cloth vest and trousers, black cap with cheesecutter peak, and a green check necktie. They all spoke with a Scotch accent, but are supposed to be Irish, and stated they had come from Glasgow ; one of them carried a small bundle. There was also stolen from the work- shop of Mr. Nicholas Wright, Morpeth, on the same night, two Chisels and a Screwdriver, one of which was found upon the premises at the railway station. Information to be given to Superintendent Cocks, Police Office, Morpeth, Northumber- land.— Bow- street, June 24. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen during the night of the 28th ultimo, from a field at Shottaton, Salop, a large brown mare Donkey, in good condi- tion, remarkably thick neck. Information to be given to Detective Sergeant Dovey, West Felton, or to Police Con- stable Gough, Ruyton of the Eleven Towns, Salop.— Bow- street, July 1. Supposed to have been stolen from Shelfield- common, Walsall, about the 20th ultimo, a dark brown Horse, aged, 16 hands high, white hind feet, star on forehead. Information to be given to Superintendent Holland, Wednesbury, or to Inspector McCrea, Rushall, Walsall, Staffordshire.— Bow street, July 1. Description of a man in custody at Overton, Flintshire, for having in his possession a Horse supposed to have been stolen: he gave the name of CORNELIUS HOTSPUR, is about 30 years of age, 6 feet inches high, dark hair, bushy whiskers and moustache, dark complexion, and dressed in black silk hat, black cloth dress coat, peckets in skirt behind, ditto vest and trousers, low shoes, and fancy print cotton shirt; states he is a native of Shrewsbury, but has recently been in Birmingham. The horse is a light bay cob, abont 14 hands high, slightly marked on both knees, a few white hairs on forehead, and a little white on hind feet; has a new saddle and bridle, and two runs of girth. Was brought from the direction of Montgomeryshire. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Bolton, Overton, Flintshire.— Bow- street, July 1. Stolen from ajfield at Datchett, Bucks, during the night of the 29th ultimo, a black Mare, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, white etar on forehead, blistered on one hock and fired on the other, hind heels white. Information to be given to Superintendent Dunham, Slough, Bucks.— Bow- st., July 1. Found, supposed to have been stolen, on the 24th ultimo, at| CirenceBter, a bay Mare, about 6 years old, 16 hands high, with near white foot, and short tail. Information to be given to Superintendent Riddiford, Constabulary Office, Citencester, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, July 1. Stolen from a stable at Headly, Hants, between the hours of 10 p. m. on the 26; h and 3 a. m. on the 27th ultimo, the property of Charles Taylor, farm bailiff, a dark grey gelding Pony, 3 years old, 13 hands high, small wart on breast between the legs; aluo a blind Halter stolen with it, with a piece of brass in the shape of a heart In front. Information to be given to Superintendent Cheyney, Hants Constabularly Station, Alton.— Bow- street, July 1. The two gipsies named LEE, advertised in the Police Gazettte of the 3rd ultimo, charged with stealing a blight bay cob Horse from Wistow, Hunts, on the night of the 19th ult., are still at large. Information to be given to Superintendent Brown, St. Ives; to Acting Superintendent Hamilton, Ramsey, Hunts, who holds a warrant for their apprehension ; or at any Police Station in Hunts or Cambs.— Bow- st., June 28. Supposed to have been stolen, on- the night of the 23rd instant, from a field at Coedyrallt, in the parish of Cadoxton- juxta- Neath, a light bay draught Horse, 7 years old, about 15 hands high, white star on forehead, siddle marks on back, a slight defect in the near eye, a small lump inside the near hind leg near the hock, and in good condition; the property of Jacob Williams. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Constabulary Office, Neath, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, June 28. Supposed to have been stolen, on the night of the 25th instant, from a field at Merton, near Holywell, the property of Mr. John Jones, farmer, two cart Horses, black, in good con- dition, abont 15J hands high, one of them has a white streak down the face, and the younger of the two is 7 yeais old. Information to be given to Superintendent Adams, Holywell, Flintshire.— Bow- street June 28. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Selby Wick, in the parish of Nortlifield, during the night of the 18th inst., a dark chesnut mare Pony, 2 years old, about 13£ hands high, white face and off hind fetlock, long tail, and has been shod; the property of Mr. William Davis. Information to be given at the Police Station, King's Heath, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, June 28. Supposed stolen from a field near the town of Llantrissant, on the night of the 18th instant, a dark brown mare Pony, 4 years old, about 13 hands high, in good condition, saddle marked, on back several small white spots, newly shod, and has the appearance of being well bred. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas, Glamorgan Constabulary, Pontypridd, or to Mr. John Morgan, Relieving Officer, Llan- trissant, who will pay all reasonable expenses on recovery of tlie Pony.— Bow- street, June 26. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Hever, Kent, on the night of the 22nd instant, a black cart Mare, well bred, about 15 hands high, 10 years old, few white hairs on forehead, little white hair on hind leg, old scar on near side near the shoulder, and has been gored by a bull. Information to be given to Sergeant Mayne, Police Court, Tunbiidge, Kent. — Bow- street, June 20. Further information respecting JOHN SURMAN, who absconded from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, on the 17th of June, 1864, charged with stealing five Sheep, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 11th July following : 30 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inchcs high, large light brown whiskers growing on chin ; dressed in a dark or plum coloured jacket, woollen cord trousers, blue necktie, and a round billycock hat. He is a native of Conderton, Gloucestershire. Information to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcester- shire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 26. Supposed to have been stolen on the 20th instant, from a drove in the parish of Glastonbury, a strong grey cob Horse, 14 hands high, 7 years old, long tail, the property of William Clark, Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Bloxham, Glastonbury, Somersetshire.— Bow- street, June 26. Absconded, charged with larceny ( property recovered), at Pembury, on the 20thinstant: * 2 men, one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches hiyh, dark complexion, dark tuft of hair on chin ; dresstd in long. dark chat, coarse military trousers, a white patch on seat, side- spring hoots, with tops cut off. The Other about 22 years of age, 6 feet .5 inches high, and fair com- plexion ; dressed in blue striped shirt, broad cord trousers, heavy lace- up boots. Were traced to near Wadhursf. Sussex. SAMUEL JACKSON,- who is charged with Stealing, froru the house of Thomas . Williamson, of Slattersley, near Hyde, Cheshire, ou the 13th instant, £ 5 in Gold and Silver : 45 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, sallow complexion, pockmarked, black hair, dirty slovenly appear- ance, and dressed in a blick frbok coat, cotton cord'trousers, and cloth cap, ail much worn ; a native of Hayfield, Derbyshire, and a hatter, butfor the last fifteen yeirrs has worked at farm- houses aDd as a carter. He is well known in the north of Derbyshire and Hazelgrove, Cheshire. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Little, Hyde, Cheshire, who holds a warrant foi his apprehension.— Bow- street, June 20. A warrant has been issued sgainst FREDERICK GWITHERS, late of Brighton, brushmaker, charged with stealing, on the 19th instant, four dozen Dandy Biushes, a Spoke Brush, a Water Brush, and two Baskets, the property of Joseph Henry Triggs, his employer : he is about 20 yta's of 8ge, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, small light moustache, rather slight make, very roug- n voice, speaks with a Birmingham accent; dressed io light cotton trousers, light vest, and light overcoat, with four pockets outside, stitched round, no fl ips; he is well known near A. shted Row or Saltley, Birmingham, also at Maidstone and London. Infor- mation to be given to Chief Constable White, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, June 28. Penal Servitude Act, 1864: JAMES JABEZ TOPPS, a native of Gloucester, No. 7092,37 years of age, fresh complexion, T. O. P. S.' on hack of left hand ; was discharged from Chatham, on the 15th December, 1866; was oonvicted at Gloucester, on the 8th October, 1863. He is to be apprehended by any Police Officer, if found, at any time previous to the 8ih October. 1867. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Police Office, Gloucester, Gloucestershire. — Bow- street, July 1, Description of THOMAS DUNN, who was committed from the Guisbrough Petty Sessions, oh the 25th ultimo, on two charges of burglary : he is 34 years of age, 5 feet 10^ inches high, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark hair, rough dark whiskers, and' dressed in a brown cloth coat, grey striped vest, black and white checked trousers, brown quilted soft hat, and light lace- up boots; he is a native flf Yarui, North Riding of Yorkshire, aud a j ' ii: ei- by trade. He is supposed to have committed similar offences elsewhere, and to have been pre- viously convicted, luformatiou to be given to Superintendent Prest, North Rilnig Constabulary, Guisbrougb, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, July 1. Description of two men and two boys committed for trial at the ensuing Gloucester Quarter Sessions for larceny: JESSE WILLIAMS, of Clayton- street, Liverpool, 43 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches - high, dark hair, blue eyes, long mous- tache, maiked with the letter ' D '; dressed in a grey jacket, old cord trousers, check neokerehief, and black cloth cap, all inn oh worn. JOHN WILLIAMS, native of New York, 28 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, brown eyes,- crucifix, fish, soldier, and basket of flowers on right arm, three anchors, crown, and woman on left arm, ship on breast, and anchor on left side ; dressed in an old grey jacket, blue trousers, black and white scarf, old side- spring boots, and black cloth cap. JOHN WILLIAMS, 10 years of age, 4 feet 6 inches high, light brown eyes'aud hair, freckled complexion ; dressed in a cold jacket, old grey trousers, and old black cap w ithout peak ; lie is a son of the above. HENRY RIMMER, native of IIormEcorch, Lancashire, A warrant h » 3 been issued For the apprehension of 16 years of age,' brown hair and eyes, slightly pockmarked ; ALBERT WADE, charged with embezzlement: he is about dressed in a dark grey jacket and vest, black cloth trousers, 27 years of sge, 5 feet 5 inches high, red curly hair, light blue white Calico shirt, old black cap, and cossack shoes. States his eyes, fresh complexion, small whiskers and moustache, and mother and father ate both dead ; is of respectable appearance rather bowlegged ; dressed in light cloth coat and vest ( same material), and black silk hat. E.' and and an anchor on back of left hand ; dressed in a grey mixture cloth facket, nearly new, light woollen cord trousers, black cloth waistcoat, blue doth cap with brass anchor buttons, bluCher boots, and light flannel shirt ; he stated he was born at North Shields, hut had been brought up at Prince Edward's Island, British N. America, that l. e had only been in England about 18 months, and had recently been working in the Durham coal mines. The other gave his name JAMES WILSON, 17 years of age, 5 feet inches high, brown hair, blue eyes, and thin freckled face ; dressed in an old black cloth jacket, brown ribbed cloth waistcoat, grey tweed trousers, and black velvet cap : he stated he was a collier, aud a native of Gateshead. A third man, who was concerned in the robbery, made his escape : he called himself THOMAS TRAVERS or TRAVIS, 18 years of age, 6 feet - 1 inches high, fair complexion, brown Iiair, thick nose, bow- legged, and spoke the Newcastle pit slang; dressed in dark coat, shepherd's plaid trousers, and large check cap; he was also wearing a light tweed waistcoat, which forms part of the proceeds of the robbery for which the other men are in custody ; he stated he belpnged to Gosforth, near Newcastle. Further information respecting the robbery committed at the ' Grapes' inn, Aspatria, in the county of Cumberland, between lip m. on the 19th and 6 a. m on the 20th ultimo, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th ultimo. It has been ascertained the the two men described, were drinking on the premises the evening previous to the robbery, and seen at 3 o'clocic on the morning of the 20th ultimo, near the inn. These men are strongly suspected of having committed the robbery. One is about 35 years of age, 6 feet high, swarthy complexion, light brown hair, slender made, and walked rather lame ; dressed in black cloth frock coat, light coloured trousers, and dark cloth cap.
