A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necersavy that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offcnce charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE' GAZETTE, aSJ Letters addressed to the Editor must toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING Found in the River Gaunless, in the parish of St. Andrew, Auckland, on the llth instant, the body of a man named JAMES JOHNSON, who left Bishop Auckland on the night of the 9th instant to go to Shildon, and at that time he had on a corded cloth coat and waistcoat, black and puce stripes, the black stripe being twice as wide as the puce ; when the body was found these articles of clothing were wanting. At an inquest held on the 12th instant, the medical evidence proved that a wound on the left side of the head had been inflicted during life, snd that deceased had died from laceration of the liver, which had been caused by a blow or fall ; and at the adjourned inquiry on she 17th instant, the jury returned a Verdict of ' Wilful Murder againsr some person or persons Unknown.' The coat and waistcoat have not yet been found. Information to be given to Superintendent Henderson, Bishop Auekland, Durham.— Bow- slre'A, January 21. Found between 11 and 12 a. m. on the 1st instant, in Castleditch, in the parish of Chepstow, a small deal Box, 1 foot long, and 7 inches wide, tied up in a black handkerchief, on the top of the box was the Body of a newly- born male child, tied up in three pieces of white calico, of superior quality, the child is supposed to have been dead about 2 days. When found, also in the same box, was the frame of another Child, supposed to have been in the box ahout 2 years, and in a decomposed state. A coroner's inquest was held on the llth instant, and returned a verdict of • Wilful Murder' against some per- on or persons unknown. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk, or to Inspector Ward, Chepstow, Monmouthshire.— Bou>- strect, January 16. The coroner for the borough of Brighton held an inqnest on the 9th instant, on the body of a newly- born male child, and the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. This child was concealed in a paper box, wrapped up in a piece of striped cotton, either an old apron or piece of a dre- s, enclosed in brown paper, and directed to a Mrs. Elliott, 129, Albemarle- street, Brighton, and was left at the ' King of Denmark,' No. 18, Old Bailey, city of London, where lOd. was paid, and then forwarded by the London, Brighton, and Seu'h Coast Railway Com- pany's servants to Brighton on the 2nd instant; there being no Albemarle- stieet in Brighton, after a few days the box was opened, when it was di- covered to contain the body of a child. It is supposed to have been left at the ' King of Den- mark ' by some carrier. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hal', Brighton.— Bout- street, January 11. FORGERY. Description of a man charged with uttering forged Cheques at the ' Lord Portman' publichouse, Broadley- terrace, Marylebone: a musician, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, delicate looking, fair complexion, curly hair, small moustache, no whiskers ; dressed in brown cloth over coat and dark under coat, vest, and trouseis; wears a gold watch and large Albert chain : ot gentlemanly appearance.— Metropolitan Police, D Division, Janua'y 16. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from a person at. Bridgend on Monday evening the 24th ultimo, a gold signet. Ring, buckle patten, with sardonyx Btone, and the crest and initials ' W. M. B.' of the owner thereon. Information to be given to Superintendent Sadler, Police Office, Bridgend, Glamorganshire.— tiow- vreet, Jan. 21. —~—, — ^ BURGLARY AND MOUSE . BREAKING. Between 11 p. m. cn the 17th and 4 a. m. on the 18th instant, the counting- house of Thomas Giimston, Esq., hemp manufacturer, Clifford Mills, near Tadcaster, Yorkshire, was entered by false keys, and the following Monies, amounting to £ 104 13s. was stolen from the desk : £ 4 in Sovereigns, £ 50 in Half- ciowus and Florins, £ 45 in Shillings, £ 3 in Sixpences, 10s. in Threepenny- pieces, 10s. in Fourpenny- pieces, £ 1 in Crowns, 8s. in old English and Foreign Coins, and a Crown of George II. Information to be given to Superintendent Kane, West Riding Constabulary, Tadcaster, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 21. Between 12- 30 noon and 2 p. m. on the 15th inst., a cottage near Stourport was broken into, and the following articles stolen : a black cloth Coat, bound with braid, pockets outside, nearly new ; a black cloth Coat, pockets outside, half worn ; a black cloth Waistcoat ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, nearly new ; a pair of new cotton cord Breeches, brass buttons at knee; a blue silk Waistcoat, flowered ; a brown plaid Waistcoat; a blue and black plaid silk Handkerchief; a crimson and white flowered ditto ; an Irish cloth Shirt, broad band down front, nearly new; and a linen flowered Table- cloth, 2 to 3 yards long, nearly new. Information to be given to Superintendent Stanton, Stourport, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, January 18. During the night of the llth instant, the residence of Col. F. Le Blanc, Blackbrook House, Fareham, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : five plain Tea Spoons, two shell- pattern ditto, one Mustard Pot and Spoon, one Toast Rack, two Skewers, four Wine Labels, one Wine Strainer ( all silver and with crest— an eagle); a pair of silver Spectacles, two £ 5 Notes, and ahout £ 4 in silver. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Drew, Hants Constabu- lary, Fareham.— Bow- street, January 16. On the evening of the 11 th instant, William Offley, dealer, of St. Ives, Hunts, was attacked by two men, on the highway near St. Ives, and robbed of a brown leather Purse, with; elastic band, containing one £ 10 note, Veasey, Desborough, & Cos., Bank ; one £ 5 note and £ 3 10s in gold ; and a small white bandied Penknife with pencil in the end. The men who attacked him were apparently young men ; dressed in dark coats, hairy caps, and glazed leather leggings. Information to be given to Superintendent Brown, St. Ives, Hunts.—' Bow- street, January 16. Further information respecting the burglary at the Rectory House, Sherwick, Cornwall, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 28th ultimo : a black cloth Overcoat, with black alpaca lining, and pockets outside, also a black Scarf, with fine white stripes, scarcely visible, French manufacture, were stolen at the same time ; all the brass articles stolen have been recovered. £ o reward will be given for the apprehension of SELBY, and a further reward of £ 15 on conviction and recovery of the pro- perty or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephens, St. Germans, Cornwall. — Bow- street, January 14. Between 3 and 4 p. m. on the llth instant, the cottage of William Stacey, at Froxfield, was broken into, and the follow- ing property stolen : a single- breasted black cloth Coat, with a \ pocket on each side and one inside the left breast; a pair of black cloth Trousers, worn at the knees and round the bottom. of the legs ; a single- breasted black cloth Vest ; two calico Shirts ; a black silk Neckerchief; and a black billycock Hat, with a wide black band. An artilleryman who was seen in the neighbourhood, and whose uiylorm was found in the house, is suspected : he is 20. j years of age, 5 ftet 5 inches high, fresh complexioo, brown hair, grey e> es, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen property. Information to be given to Superintendent Longland, Hants Constabulary, Petersfield. — Bow street, January 14. Some time during the night of the llth inBtant, the Trinity School Rooms, in the parish of St. Clement's, Ipswich, were broken and entered and an 8 day round face spriDg Dial, an oilcloth table Cover, and about Is. in copper Money, stolen therefrom, the property of the Trustees of the said school, the dial has Schulen, Ipswich, on the face, and | the tablecover is supposed to be in size about o feet 6 by 3 feet 6 inches. Infor- j mation to be given to Head Constable Mason, Town Hall, i Ipswich.— Bow street, January 14. On the 7th instant, about 5 p. m., the dwelling house of Mr. Alfred Collings, of Thornbury, clock and watchmaker, | was broken into by a man now in custody, and remanded until the 16th instant: he gives his name GEO. EDWARDS, of Summer- hill, London, sailor, 37 jears of age, 5 feet 2J| inches high, thin made, blue eyes, rather sandy hair, bald on top of head, sallow complexion, lost a tooth in front of upper jaw, and part of forefinger nf right hand, ' T. N.' on left arm, cru- cifix on right ; dressed in a black cloth ribbed monkey jacket, velvet collar, two pockets outside, black cloth vest, pilot cloth trousers, plaid scarf, black cloth cap with peak, and cossack shoes. He states he was discharged from the ' V. Mary,' a merchant ship at London, in October last. He is supposed to have committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Superintendent Ellison, Chipping Sodbury, or to Sergeant Arthur, Poliee Station, Thornbury, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, January 11. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Found on a tarui at Redhill, in the borough of Reigate, about, three weeks ago. a dark brown Pony. The owner can have the same by giving a \ roper description and paying the expenses. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Rogers, Rebate, Surrey .- How- street, January 21, Supposed to have been stolen on the 29th ultimo, from a. field at Smethcott, Salop, a black Mare, 2 years old, long tail, and ahout 13 hands, the property of William Craig, farmer, Smethcott. Information to be given to Superintendent Ivens, County Police Station, Shrewsbury, or to Police Constable Sommerville, Longdcn, Salop.— Bow- street, January 21. Stolen between the 15th and the morning of the 17th instant, Pfrotn a field in the occupation of Edward Deck, of Occold, farmer, a half- bred Down and Leicester e we Hoggett, marked on the near side with the letter ' D ' in a circle with red paint. Information to be given to Inspector Eyre or to Police Constable Gillespie, Thorndon, Suffolk.— Bow- street, January 21. Supposed stolen, since the 28th ultimo, an iron grey Mare, 4 years old, 13 hands high, long tail, a wen under belly near flank, three shoes deficient, one on near hind foot.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, January 18. Found at Shenstone, near Lichfield, Stafford, on the 1st instant, and supposed to have been stolen, an iron- grey cart Mare, about 14 hands high, about 7 years old, bang tail cat square, very long coat, and in low condition. Information to be given to Sergeant Allen, Shenstone, near Lichfield, or to any Police Station in the county of Stafford.— Bow- street, Jan. 18. Stolen from afield in the parish of Goodrich, Herefordshire, on the 10th instant, a small Welsh Pony, 4 years old, all black excepting a few white hairs on the forehead, ' W. G.' burnt on the near fore hoof; has been broken to saddle and harness ; the property of Mr. Preece, Priory Farm, Goodrich. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Moore, Police Station, Ross, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, January 18. Stolen between 12 and 5 a. m. on the 15th instant, from. Starston Hall, the property of Mr. Wm. C. Smith, a light grey hackney Mare, well bred, 7 or 8 years old, high action, square- cut tail, long mane, flat fore feet., and travels rather wide behind ; an albert cane- backed pony Gig, shield with ' S.' in old English behind, American cloth cushions,- lamp irons in front of iishb mrd ; a set of f- sized gig Harness, plated broad flat buckles, leather collar, anu pony reins with covered buckles; and a horse Rug, which was on the mare, mended with a piece of red carpet, and had a chest and girth strap. Information to be given to Superintendent Witheford. Police Station, Pulham, Haileston, Norfolk.— Bow- street, January 18. Supposed to have been stolen from Bromley, Worfield, about the 9ch instant, the property of Ezer Penzer, a dark- faced Ram ot the Shropshire breed, and full mouthed. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent McWilliam, Bridgnorth, or to Police Constable Chase, Worfield, Salop.— Boi> street, January 14. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Selleshall Abbey, on the 1st instant, a store Ewe yearling Sheep of the Shropshire down breed, aud marked ' G ' in pitch on left side. Information to be given to Sergeant Beeston, Police Station, Newport, Salop.— Bo- r- street, Januaiy 14. Stolen, on the night of the 7: h instant, from Fold, a Kent Lamb, marked ' C. O.' in red ochre or paint. Information to be given to Superintendent Everest, Chatham, Kent.— Bow- street, January 14. Absconded from the parish of Sydgate, Suffolk, on or about the 2nd instant, charged with obtaining two Horses under false pretences from Mr. Joseph Farrow, of Wickham- brook, farmer, ARTHUR PARKER, native of Wickham- brook, has resided in London for a long time where he carried on the trade of a builder, 28 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, fresh complexion, smart appearance. Supposed to be well- ki own by some of the K Division of Metropolitan Police. One of the horses is a perfect chesnut cob, 7 years old, 14 hand3 3 inches high, face full of white hairs, scar on off fore fetlock and nose ; the other aged, chesnut, about 14 hands high, hind legs white, long mane, light in carcase, tail cut square, a good stepper. Information to be given to Super- intendent Death, Clare, West Suffolk.— Bow- street, Jan. 14. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen about 11- 45 p. m. on the 19th instant, from an hotel at Sandbach, a gentleman's blue witney Overcoat, two pockets outside the skirts, a ticket pocket on the right side, a pocket inside each breast, black silk velvet collar, lined and faced with black silk, bound round the edges with black silk braid, double seams, and nearly new. By a man of the following description, who was seen coming out of the commercial room in a hurried manner, and absconded from his lodgings immediately after : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and whiskers, stout make ; dressed in moleskin trousers and vest, light drab cloth overcoat, strong boots, and round black hat; is a mill furnaceman stated he had lately been working in the north of England, and was going in'o Staffordshire. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Roubottom, Constabulary Station, Middlewich, Cheshire.— Bow- street'. January 21. Stolen from tbe house of Jonathan Slater, lodging- house keeper, ilalton, on the morning of the 16th instant : a brown cloth Overcoat lined with green baize, pocket outside of each skirt; a black cloth trock Coat, pocket outside of each skirt, laps over the pockets; a black silk velvet Waistcoat, light coloured lining; an old fashioned verge Watch, No. 42671, sbeel Ot » ain attached ; a scarlet and black plaid Scarf. By a man who bad lodged at the house for two nights, about 24 years of each, 6 feet 2 inches high, fair complexion, slightly pMkipitted, < J » k hair, no whiskers, slender figure; dressed in brown overoout, dark coat underneath, narrow Btripe woollen cord trovers fitting tight to the leg, and black hairy dogskin cap : has ihe appearance of a groom. States that he belongs to Beddon, near Hull, and that his father is a fisherman. Information to he given to Superintendent Gregory, Malton, Yorkshire.— January 21. Absconded from Hayle, Cornwall, on the 15th instant, charged ou a warrant with enib. zz ing certain Monies, the propei ty ot his employers, Messrs. Tievithick & Co.: HENRY FISHER, about 35 years of a< e, 5 feet 2 inches high, flirid complexion, dark hair and whiskers, ' Henry,' a fish, and ' er,' tattooed ou arm ( supposed to be the right). Has , a female in company « itli him about 18 years ot age. He is most lively to seek employ ment on some railway. Information to be given to Superintendent Miller, County Constabulary, Camborne, Cornwall.— bow- street, January 21. Description of GEORGE R. WATTS, and a woman ( supposed to be his sister) named JANE, who are charged on a warrant with stealing a Victorme and other articles, the property ot William Hughes, diaper, Bangor. The man is from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, pro- portionately built, dark complexion, black hair, bushy beard, and moustache ; druses well and variously, but always in tight- fitting troosets ; ofien smokes when out walking, and is always followed by a black retriever dog ; the woman is a few years yoULg- r that Watts, tail and masculine- looking, dresses well, often wearing a long rough black cloth cloak ( imitation bear- skin). When at Bangor they often received letters and money fiom Dublin and other parts of Ireland, of which country they are natives. They left Bangor on the 14th inst. by rail for Liverpool, and on their arrival at Chester inquired for the Birkenhead train, which they entered. Information to be given to Superintendent Jones, Bangor, Carnarvonshire, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, January 21. Absconded on the 4th instant, charged on a warrant, signed by the Lord Mayor, with stealing 80 carats weight of Diamonds, and other valuable property of a similar description : SAMUEL SICH. VlON, No. 123, Camdeu- road- villas, Camden- town, Middlesex, about 38 or 40 ye a s ot age, 5 feet 9 inches high, stout built, sallow complexion, slight whiskers, beard, and moustache, black hair, lull fat face, rather small nose, and pleasing manners. His wife, L1NA SICHMON, about 33 years of age, middle height, slender figure, fair complexion, blue eyes, very short sighted, has two or three false teeth in upper jaw ; she is supposed to have gone on the continent ( probably Berlin), having in her possession the stolen diamonds, or a considerable portion of them, and other valuable property. £ 100 reward will be paid to any person who will give such in- formation as shall lead to his apprehension and conviction. Information to be given to Inspector Hamilton, City of London Police, De ective Office, Old Jewry, E. C.— Bow- street, Jan. 21. Absconded from Pennybridge Farm, Mayfield, Sussex, on the 12th inst., charged with stealing a pair of half Wellington Boots, a black bowler- crowned Hat with black erape round it, and a ca'gut Whip, nearly new, 8 leet long, with seven or eight brass ferrules on it: a carter, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, dark brown eyes, brown hair, slight make ; dressed in a brown ccat with pockets at the sides, cord trousers, bowler- crowned hat, and is supposed to be wearing the stolen I oots ; he had with him a pair of new leather leggings. Information to be given to Superintendent Bennett, Uckfield, Sussex, or to Sergt. Peerless, Mark Cross, Tunbridge Wells.— bow- street, January 18. Stolen on the morning of the 10th instant, from a public- house at Lambourne, Berks, a pair of balmoral Boots, recently half- soled, without any nails, and a white cambric Pocket- handkerchief. By a tramping jockey, who lodged there the previous night, and left an old pair of boots behind : he is about 24 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, very slight make; dressed in a dark tweed coat, vest, and trousers, and cap ; he is supposed to be a native of Harpenden, Herts. In- formation to be given to Superintendent O'Neill, Wantage, or to Sergt. Horfield, Lambourue, Berks.— Bow- street, January 18. Absconded on the 10th instant, from No. 1, Ray- street, Clerkenweli, stealing 45 pairs of light cord Trousers, 9 pairs of fancy ditto, 8 black cloth shooting Coats, 9 dark Vests, 50 yards of fancy Cloth, 17 yards ot woollen Cord, 15 yards of black Cloth, 33 yards of cotton Cord, and £ 7 8s. in Gold and Silver, a man, 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair com- plexion, hair, and eyes ; dressed in black suit and hat.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, January 18. Absconded from Hastings, charged with feloniously con- verting to his own use a silver Watch and a gold Ring, entrusted to him to repair, the property of Alfred J. White, CHARLES SNEYD, a jeweller, formerly in business at Brighton, and since at Hastings, about 60 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, thin grey hair, small grey whiskers, defect in one eye, tt in spare make, and rather shuffling gait; dressed generally in a high- crowned hat, and dark clothes. Supposed to be in lhe neighbourhood of Hox'on, London. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Glenister, Hastings, who hold a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, January 18. Stolen on the 10th instant, from No. 25, Prince's- square, Paddington : two gold regard Rings ; a gold Ring, set with blue sapphire and diamond ; a ditto, set with small diamonds ; a ditto, set with one diamond and two rubies ; a gold signet Rii g, ' D' or ' G' on it. By a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sunburnt complexion, black hair, no whiskers ; dressed in dark brown overcoat and black hat: was in com- pany with a man, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion ; dressed in light grey knotted coat.— Metropolitan Police, X Division, January 18. Stolen in tin borough of Bury St. Edmund's, on the 14th instant, a light drab leather folding Purse with elastic band, containing £ 13 19s 2^ d, consisting of a £ 5 note of Messrs. Iluddleston, Cooper, Greene, and Co.' s Bank, the rest in gold and silver, by a woman ot the following description : a mulatto, middle size ; dressed in print dress, large print apron, dark shawl, and white straw bonnet with green ribbon. She was accompanied by a slight buiit man, carrying a small bundla, supposed to contain a lady's red j » c+. et with lappets behind, and a muslin Bkirt with pink flowers, given to them where the robbery was committed. Description of THOMAS RICHARDSON, alias TOM THE SHAVER, who absconded from Shotton Colliery, on the 28th ultimo, charged with stealing a parcel of Drapery Goods from a carrier's cart at Easington, on the 27th ultimo: about 50 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, proportionate figure, thin face, fair complexion, fair thin hair, whiskers, and moustache ; dressed, when last seen, in a brown coat, black trousers, and black leather leggings ; he is well known amongst the pitmen in Durham and Northumberland, and has been employed as a horse keeper at many collieries in both counties. Lloyd, of the Wynslay Arms Hotel : he is about 27 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark curly hair, small dark whiskers, a little growing under his chin and hp, smart active appearance, and proportionally built ; dressed in a dark overcoat, black hat, aud wore a gold albert guard. Description of three men and a woman committed to Flint Gaol, on the 15th instant, for three months each, charged with frequenting places of public resort for the purpose of committing felony :— THOMAS NUGENT, states that he belongs to London and has relatives living in Neat- street, Old Kent- road, and is a wool mat maker by trade; 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, pioportionate figure, rather good looking, brown hair and whiskers, fair complexion, and blue eyes ; dressed in black soft billycock hat, dark clothes, and lace- up boots. GEORGE HARVEY, says he belongs to Kettering, Northamptonshire, and is a painter; 38 years of uge, 5 feet 5 inches high, proportionate figure, grey hair, and black whiskers round the chin, fair complexion, and grey eyes; dressed in grey scotch cap, dark brown cloth jacket, dark cloth vest, dark cord trousers, and lace- up boots. HARRY WILLIAMS, says he belongs to Peterborough, and is a painter ; 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout make, has the appearance of a pugilist ( been in the employ of Harris who travels the country with a starring booth), brown hair, no whiskers, blue eyes, has a scar on bridge of nose, which is a little turned on on9 tide, and several scars on back of neck and under chin ; dressed in black round crowned hat, dark clothes, and lace- up hoots. JANE TOWNSEND, says she belongs to Oldham, Lan- cashire, and is a dressmaker ; 28 years of age, Bhort and stout, dark hair and eyes, fair complexion, has rather a low forehead ; dressed in black velvet bonnet with puce- coloured strings, dark cloth cloak, brown wincey dress with a yellow flower upon it, and lace- up boots. Upon the prisoner Nugent was found a valuable dark green morocco pocket- biok, which is supposed to have been stolen. It is strongly suspected they have committed offences else- where. Apprehended by the police at Newport, Monmouthshire, on tbe 14th instant, two men of the following description, charged with having in their possession twenty. eight skeleton keys, a burglar's j mmy, and other housebreaking implements, with intent te commit a felony, for which they were sentenced by the magistrates to three months' imprisonment at Usk, under the Vagrant Act, viz.: WILLIAM FRY. a native o Bristol, a polisher by trade, 37 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light brown hair, long whiskers and moustache, pale complexion, sunken eyes, proportionate make, and dressed in a blue cloth overcoat, dark trousers and vest, and black soft felt hat ( has been convicted at Bristol) ; and GEORGE SEY- MOUR ( supposed fictitious), tailor, states that he is a native of London, but supposed to belong to Bristol, 23 years of age, 5 teet 5 or 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, no whiskers, small black moustache, smart appearance, and dressed in a light drab overcoat, black trock coat, vest, and trousers, and high- crowned hat with ' black hand; he had in his possession a small leather Satchel, a black Portmanteau, a gold signet box Ring, white stone, with a photograph of a lady inside and the name ' J. T. Roberts ;' and a new gold Pin with a small blue stone. They are supposed to have committed offences elsewhere. The whole of the property stolen from the commercial room of the ' Lion* hotel and the refreshment room at the Cambridge Railway Station, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 18th instant, has been recovered, and a man of the fol- lowing description committed for trial for stealing the same : STEPHEN CHOPPING, ot llelions Bumpstead, Essex, 31 years of age, 5 teet 6| inches high without shoes, dark hair and complexion, hazel eyes, large scar from burn on lower part of right side of face, on brea- t, and under right arm. States he was born at Stebbing, Esse*, was in business as a miller at Sudbury, and became a bankrupt. Another black Bag, broken open, was found in his house, and on his person a gold doubie bottomed English lever Waich, hard enamel dial, capped and jewelled in tour holes, No. 36616, aud a gold Albeit Chain with Seal and Key Lockets attached ; and a gold buckle Ring with oval bloodstone. He also left at an inn a Carpet- bag containing a number of letters and papers belonging to Captain John Burgan, ot Helstone, Cornwall. Also some Blankets, a Counteipane, two black cloth Coa's, twd black Vests, two pairs of black Trousers, and a number of othei articles. Description of JOHN ARMSTRONG, commit tad to hard labour for one month, on the 17th instaut, for stealing a pair of lace- up boots at Lutterworih : 27 years ot age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, thumb of right hand has been crushed, and is deformed ; states he is a native of Kes- wick, in Cumberland, he is a tramping groom, and states he has been employed for 18 months at Bishopgate- street mews, London ; dressed in a drab cloth coat, grey checked vest, cotton cord trousers, and black hat. He appears well acquainted with prison discipline, and is supposed to have been previously convicted.
