POLICE GAZETTE, autfjoritjn CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputet Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The flumes of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, ivith every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Proper!, that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4320 MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1866. police.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear tile Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. T>. BUKNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, j^^. C. ->> henever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that • an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Metiers addressed to the Editor a 11 list prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. XV.," as they cannot be published without his • authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 20th instant the body of a female Child, apparently about three weeks old, was found in the Glamorganshire Canal at Cardiff, wrapped in a long coloured nightgown and the end of a bag made of coarse cloth ; the infant had a string round its neck, and the skull was fractured. A coroner's jury have returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Information to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, Cardiff, Glamorganshire.— Dow- street, October 22. Early on the morning of the 8th instant, by means of the explosion of a large quantity of gunpowder, contained in a tin can, thrown or placed in the cellar of the dwelling- house of William Fearnehough, of New Hereford- street, Sheffield, an attempt was made to destroy the said dwelling- house, with intent to murder the persons therein. The sum of £ 1,100 will be paid to any person or persons who will give such informa- tion and evidence as shall lead to the discovery and conviction of the offender or offenders, £ 100 of which Her Majesty's Government has authorized to be offered ; and Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State will advise the grant of Her Majesty's gracious pardon to any accomplice ( not being the actual offender or offenders,) who will give such information and evidence as aforesaid. Information to be given to Chief Constable Jackson, Town Hall, Sheffield.— Boio- street, Oct. 19. dark brown hair, and proportionate figure ; dressed in a cotton cord jacket and veBt, fustian trousers, black cloth cap, and strong navvy boots ; has lost an upper front tooth, has a scar on the temple, and is much addicted to drinking. Information to be given to Superintendent Davidson, Durham County Con- stabulary, West Hartlepool.— Bow- street, October 19. Supposed to have been stolen from the person of Edward Ibberson, beerhouse keeper, Idle, at midnight on the 11th instant, at Windhill, a gold lever Watch, white dial, sunk seconds, a little bit chipped out of dial near figure ' 6had a gold Albert Chain attached with two gold Keys, one three- square, with two stones in and one missing, the other has one stone and is about 1 inch long. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, Court House, Bradford, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 17. FORGERY. Absconded, charged with forgery, and against whom a warrant has been issued, JOHN HENRY GREATREX, native of Gravesend, Kent, late of Glasgow, a photographer, about 38 years of age, nearly 6 feet high, stout built, military appearance, gruff voice, good looking, fair hair combed over to the right, large bushy drooping whiskers, moustache, and hair on chin ; is a member of the Plymouth Brethren. Was in bud less in Regent- street, London, as a photographer. He is in' » he habit of preaching in the streets, and has been in America. A female is with him, about 22 years of age, < yrdinary height, genteel and good- looking, round face, brown ° a- ept hair, dressed in a heavy dark winsey or a light coloured check with buttons down the front. Greatrex is charged, with the two Grimshaws at present in custody, with forging £ 1 Notes of the Union Bank of Scotland, great part of which have been recovered. A reward of £ 60 will be paid for his apprehension. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of County Police, Edinburgh.— Bow- st., October 22. ROBBEE. Y AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the evening of the 17th instant, in Maidstone, a gold duplex compensating " Watch, makers J. McCabe and Co., London, No. 18751, with a long link gold Chain, two gold Seals, and gold Key attached, one of the seals has engraved on it a crest— two serpents entwined in a gemmed ring, the other, a lion rampant and the crest. Information to be given to Head Constable Barnes, Borough Police, Maidstone, Kent.— Bow- street, October 22. Supposed to have been stolen from the person of a gentle- man in a first class carriage on the railway between Stafford and Cambridge, by Bletchley, three £ 5 Bank of England Notes ; stopped at the bank. £ 3 reward will be paid on the restoration of the notes and conviction of the offender or offenders, if stolen. Information to be given to Head Constable Turrall, Police Office, Cambridge.— Bow- street, October 22. Description of JOHN SCOTT, who absconded from Hartlepool on the 14th instant, charged with stealing from Robert Mann seven Sovereigns and £ 1 10s. in Silver, whilst passing over Hartlepool Moor : he is a native of Ireland, 23 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion and eyes, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between 5 and 9 p. m. on the 14th instant, the dwelling- house of Ann Clarke, of Little Heath, Audlem, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : 4 breast Pins— one mourning, round head ; one horseshoe, set with pebbles ; one gold stirrup ; one round Ring, green stone in centre. 1 gold collar Stud, embossed. 2 gold Brooches— one octagon, broad blue flowers ; one pebble. 1 leather Purse, marked inside ' Miss Clarkecontaining Money. 1 Cartridge Bag, containing about 100 Cartridges, No. 16. 1 Money Box, containing Money. 1 electro- plated Ladle, marked ' G. W. C.' 9 electro- plated Spoons— three Tea, marked ' G. W. C.'; six Table, marked ' E. C.' 6 electro- plated Forks, three large, three small, marked • G. W. C.' 1 electro- plated Castor, for three bottles. 3 silver Dessert Spoons, marked ' G. W. C.' 1 silver Mustard Pot. 1 silver Butter Knife, pearl handle, supposed marked « G. W. C.' on handle. 1 oval gold Brooch, pink coloured stone in centre. 1 silver watch Chain. 4 Leaves from a small book, ' Law of Kindness' on top. A number of Knives, ivory handles, marked ' G. W. C.' By THOMAS GANDERTON, a ticket- of- leave convict, con- victed at Stafford, 31st December, 1860, and sentenced to six years' penal servitude. He was discharged on 5th August, 18G5, and went to Birmingham, and afterwards transferred to Walsall, which latter place he left about three weeks ago, without reporting himself to Police. He is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, rather good looking, tuft of hair under chin, no whiskers, blue speck on left hand, scars on eyebrows, mole on left arm and shoulder blade, and ' E. C.' on left arm ; dressed in a pepper- and- salt long coat and billycock hat. Information to be given to Superintendent Laxton, Nantwich, Cheshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Oct. 22. During the night of the 19th instant, the saddle- room belonging to G. Pardoe, Esq., of Nash- Court, parish of Bur- ford, was broken into, and stolen therefrom : a pair of cashmere Breeches, four pearl buttons on each knee, also a pair of red Braces attached to them ; a dark brown mixture stable Jacket, lined with brown tweed ; a pair of dark cloth Trousers, lined with calico; 2 white linen Shirts, marked ' W. H. T.' on collar ; 1 pair of light lace- up Boots, with brass eyelets ; a pair of top Boots ; a silver lace hat Band. Information to be given to Superintendent McWilliam, County Constabulary Office, Bridgnorth, Salop, or to Police Constable ( 44) J. Powner, Burford, near Tenbury, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, October 22. On the night of the 20th instant, the drapers shop of James Faulkner, at Cheadle, was broken and entered, and the follow- ing property stolen : two white linen Jackets, men's size, with metal buttons; two new woollen Mufflers, one black and scarlet, the other peach and white ; three pairs of men's blue grey woollen Stockings ; and about 13s. in Silver and Copper, amongst which is a 4d.- Piece with two holes in it. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Steer, Stockport, Cheshire. — Bow- street, October 22. About midnight on the 18th instant, the premises of Hyman Phillips, pawnbroker, Cardiff, were broken and entered, and stolen therefrom : 1 Melton Coat, pockets at side. 1 light Coat, pockets at side. 6 Vests. 7 Crimean Shirts. 1 black French Hat. 2 black Handkerchiefs. 3 fur monkey Jackets. 1 second hand ditto, sleeves moth eaten. 1 pair of black cloth Trousers. 1 pair of speckled cloth ditto, fly fronts. Information to be given to Superintendent Stockdale, Cardiff, Glamorganshire.— Bow- street, October 22. - gigg . v'/ agj Absconded on the morning of the 17th| instant, breaking out of the house of Mrs. Murray, boarding- house keeper, New- port, Monmouthshire, a Scotch sailor, called BEN, stealing a pair of moleskin Trousersa a grey Crimean Shirt, a light ditto, a check Shirt, a black cloth Waistcoat, three singlet Shirts ( one of them bound with red), a duck Jumper, a pair of Wellington Boots, a white calico Shirt, a long Towel, and two loaves of Bread ; all the clothing belongs to seamen. He is 26 years of age, about 6 feet high, brown hair, and clean shaved; dressed in brown and white striped trousers, blue overcoat with velvet collar, and plaid shirt; he talked of going to Liverpool. Information to be given to the Chief Superin- tendent, Borough Police Office, Newport, jMonmouthshire,— Bow- street, October 19. Between 11 a. m. and 7 p. m. on the 15th instant, the dwelling- house of William Bowe, of Hunton, farmer, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom: a silver verge Watch, ' W. B.' engraved on the inner case, a silver Guard, and a gold wedding Ring. Two men of the following description were seen loitering about the village, and are suspected : one about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, stoutly built, and slightly pockpitted; dressed in a dark pilot jacket, dark trousers, and black billy- cock hat: the other about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high; dressed in pepper- and- salt- coloured coat and trousers and black cloth cap. Information to be given to Superintendent Walmsley, North Riding Constabulary, Leyburn, Yorkshire. — Bou>- strcet, October 19. Description of a man and woman suspected of breaking into the house of John Williams of Hentland, on the 10th instant, and stealing therefrom a cotton Dress with red flowers and black specks; a black cashmere scarf Shawl; a light cashmere red and green mixed Shawl; a blue bundle Hand- kerchief ; and an old- fashioned leather Purse with steel spring: the man, about 30 years of age, dtessed in Scotch cap aud pepper- and- salt coloured jacket; the woman had on a light cotton dress, white straw bonnet, and red shawl. Information to be given to Superintendent Blossett, County Constabulary, Harewood, near Ross, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, October 17. On the night of the 14th instant the dwelling- house of George Burgess, Stourbridge, was broken and entered, and a silver patent lever Watch, maker Joseph Adams, Stour- bridge, No. 6048; two gold shirt Studs; a gold mourning Ring set with dark hair ; a gold Ring Bet with a small blood- stone ; three silver Thimbles, one marked ' S. B.'; two silver Tea Spoons, one marked ' S. B.'; a pair of plated Sugar Tongs; and a silver Brooch set with pebbles, stolen therefrom. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent Freeman, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, October 17. On the night of the 13th instant, the offices of Messrs. Shipton and Halliwell, West Bars, Chesterfield, were broken and entered, and an iron Chest, containing a Cashbox, in which were Notes, Gold, and several pounds in Silver stolen therefrom. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Borough Police Office, Chesterfield, Derbyshire — Bow- street, October 17. The cottage of James Gilbert, of Sandyford, near Stone, was broken and entered on the 12th inBtant, and a black cloth Coat, outside pockets; a grey mixture' Vest and pair of Trousers; a black and white woollen Shawl; a black coburg Shawl, black silk fringe ; a green plaid Bress, black silk velvet trimming round skirt; a pair of women's black cloth Boots, patent fronts; a grey calico Shirt, white front; two Half- crowns; three Shillings; a Sixpence; and 3d. in Copper stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Bergen, Stone, Staffordshire.— Bow street, October 15, Stolen from a cottage at Hartbury, near Gloucester, between 8 and 10 p . m. on the Ilth inst, by means of house* breaking : a man's new calico Shirt, with Bmall plaited front; a woman's Chemise, nearly new ; a Loaf of Bread, and a small quantity of Cheese. Supposed by a man dressed in a white slop ( having with him a woman of short stature, and three or four children), who was seen near the cottage. Information to be given to Superintendent Griffin, Gloucester.— Bow- street, October 15. During the night of ihe 6th instant, the shop of Thomas Young, at Broomhill Colliery, was broken aad entered, aad the following property stolen therefrom, viz: 12 yards of Rob Roy Tartan. 51 yards black and white checked Winsey. 25 yards of Holland, part of it dressed, and the other part undressed. 12 yards of Barege, dark and light green stripe. 11| yards of Winsey, green check large pattern. 12 yards of red Flannel. 12 yards ot white Flannel. 12 yards of winsey Skirting, in 2 pieces, small check. 3J yards of woollen Skirting, puce and white stripe. 3 yards of woollen Skirting, red mixture, small check. 4 woollen Shirts, two of them red and black, the others magenta and black, men's size. 3 pairs of lady's Stays. 1 pair of long Drawers, men's size, grey colour, bound with red. Two men of the following description were seen near the place about 5 on the following morning, carrying large bundles, sup- posed to be the stolen property : one, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout make, fresh complexion, full face, upper lash of right eye hangs down ; dressed in blue monkey jacket with pocket laps stitched round, black vest, moleskin trousers torn at the waist, aud glengarry cap: the other, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, proportionate make; dressed in light coloured shooting coat, brown velvet vest with / pink spot, dark trousers, and black hairy or sealskin cap tied over the top with strings : both are very dirty, and have the appearance of ' muggers' or hawkers. Information to be given to Superintendent Cocks, Police Office, Morpeth, Northumberland.— Bow- street, October 12. Between 5- 30 and 7 30 p. m. on the 7th instant, a dwelling- house in the city of Durham was broken and entered, and two german silver Watches, an old- fashioned silver verge Watch, a silver Albert Guard, a german silver guard Chain, a gold Wedding Ring ( very much worn), about 30s. worth of Postage Stamps, and a small japanned tin Cashbox stolen therefrom, luformation to be given to Superintendent W. Beard, Durham.— Bow- street, October 12. During the night of the 9th infant, a dwelling- house in the township of Halton was broken and entered, and the fol- lowing property stolen therefrom : a black cloth frock Coat, two pockets in skirts behind and one inside left breast, sleeves lined with silk plaid of very small pattern, the skirts, which have been shortened, are lined with black alpaca, which is turned in, but having become loose in some places, hangs down and is frayed at the edges; a woollen scarf Shawl, mixed colours, red, blue, and black, is fringed, which is also of mixed colours; a black and white half- inch plaid woollen Bcarf Shawl, has a dull appearance, the colours having lun in wash- ing; a girl's black silk Jacket, machine- stitched with white silk; a girl's white muslin Skirt, has two tucks; an alpaca Jacket, lined with grey calico, wiii fit a boy about 12 years of age ; a small Concertina ; an old mingled green Shawl; and about 2 lbs. of uncooked Pork. Information to be given to Inspector Egerton, Town Hall, Runcorn, Cheshire.— Bow- street, October 12. Stolen between 10 a. m. and 10 p. m. on the 8th instant, from the dwelling- house of John Dunning, a miner, at Bell- hill, Rothwell Haigh, by breaking through the roof of the kitchen: a grey scarf Shawl, a new Paisley Shawl, a woollen plaid Dress- piece, a black worsttd Shawl with silk fringe, a black silk W aistcoat with roll collar, a red woollen Shirt, and a pair of dark mixture Trousers. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Wakefield.— Bow- street, October 12. not been recovered; it was last seen in possession of the prisoner at Potter's Bar on the 24th ultimo, and is now likely to be found abandoned a short distance from London. Information to be given to Superinteadent Smith, Whittlesey, Cambs.— Bow- street, October 19. Description of a youth in custody at Beceles, charged with stealing a bay Gelding from Beccles Common, on the 10th inst., which was found in his possession at Bury St. Edmund's, on the 12th instant: he gave the name of GEORGE GYE, no settled place of residence, 17 years of age, about 5 feet 3 inches high, stout make, brown hair, full face, and fresh complexion ; dressed in light wideawake, brown frock coat, white slop underneath, light cord trousers, and strong lace- up high shoes. He is supposed to have committed offences elsewhere, or to have been previously convicted. Information to be given to the Police, Beccles, Suffolk.— B< yw street, October 15. , Supposed stolen from Moccas Farm, during the night of the 8th instant, ten white laced close woolled Ewes, pitch matked ' V. C.' on near hip. If stolen, £ 10 reward will be paid for such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Superinten- dent Wilson, Shire Hall, Hereford.— Bow- street, October 15. Further description of a man who took a Horse and Trap away from Bedford, as advertised in the Police Gazette of the 10th instant. He is about 32 years of age, tall, ratheT long near the point of chin, shaves under the chin, is ( or feigm to be) deaf, and says he has served in a cavalry regiment ; dressed in a black ( supposed frock} coat, dark waistcoat and trousers, dirty stand- up collar, cossack boots, and shabby high black hat. Information to be given to Head Constable Wheeldon, Borough Police, Monmouth.— Bow- street, October 10. Stolen between 7 and 8 p. m. on the 6 th instant, from a dwelling- house at Glazedale, the property of Thomas Waller, a silver patent lever Watch, silver dial, gold figures, seconds hand, maker A J. Harris, No. 14553, West Hartlepool; a thin long silver Guard ; and a long yellow metal Guard, fancy pattern. By a man named DANIEL YOUNG ( for whom a warrant is granted), a native of Wisbech St. Mary's, 23 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, large head and face, dark hair, whiskers thin and rather light, propor- tionately built, aud rather bow- legged ; dressed in dirty moleskin trousers, cut across lett knee, two raised seams down each side about an inch apart, drab drill slop with waistband, black soft billycock hat, and strong lace- up boots with very broad toes ; has the appearance of a farm labourer. Information to be given to Superintendent Clarkson, Whitby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, October 17. Description of GEORGE CULL, late of Carey Farm, near Waretiam, Dorset, who absconded on the 10th instant, oharged with Larceny : 24 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, florid complexion, dark hair, rather long neck ; dressed features, rosy cheeks and dressed in grey coat fastened with in a li ht round\. rowned hat black cloth coat," light drab vest one button, huff waistcoat, soft felt hat, and gold studs in shirt. , _ ' • i_ - L ' ._ HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen on the 15th instant, from a field on Pain's Farm, in the parish of Shoreham, the property • of William Coverley, farmer, ten Southdown ewe Sheep and a wether Sheep, marked' C' in pitch on near side and fork mark in right ear. Information to be given to Superintendent Colman, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, Oct. 22. Supposed to have been stolen from the Farm, Cobham, the property of Mr. Thomas Wells, on the 10sh instate, a Kent Sheep, marked ' W' either on side or rump, and ear marked. Also on the 13th instant, from a field, Wick ham Farm, Strood, three Kent Lambs, pitch mark on near hip ' 8 or 16,' those marked 16 have ' T' with crown on top, on rump, ear matked under farthing of left ear. Information to be given to Superintendent Everest, Chatham, Kent. — Bow- strett, October 22. Found in the possession of a boy on the 17th instant, supposed stolen, a strong chesnut cob Mare, aged, about 14 hands high, white hind feet, long main, tail cut short, a lump on neck, holds its head very low when walking, has no shoes on. Information to be given at the Police Station, Hey, Breconshire. — Bow- street, 0ctS> er 22. Found, supposed to have been stolen, in the borough of Maldon, on the 16th instant, a dark chesnut cob Mare, 14 hands high, small white star on forehead, off hind letlock white, the sinews of fore legs a little contracted, treads on fore part of hoofs when walking, a few white hairs down the nose, and in good condition. Also a bay cob Mare, 12£ hands high, white star on forehead, white mark down the nose, black mane, tail, and legs, long tail reaching below the hocks, and in good con- dition. luformation to be given to Head Constable King, Maldon, Emex.- Bou>- street, October 22. Supposed to have been stolen from a stable in the parish of Feckenham, on the 16th instant, a black mare Pony, aged,, 13 hands high, star on forehead, has a bridle tooth on the off side, and two extra front teeth in the lower jaw ; the property of Mr. W. Heath. Information to be given to Superintendent Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.— Boio- street, October 19. Supposed to have been stolen on the night of the 11th instant, from a field at Capel, a small red Cow, about 4 yeara old, with a smoke coloured nose. Information to be given to Superintendent Dance, Tunbridge, Kent.— Bow- street, Oct. 19. On the 18th ultimo, a man of gentlemanly appearance, left a chesnut Mare at an Inn in Bury, and has not since re- turned for It, the mare is about 14 hands 1 or 2 inches high, and is supposed to have been stolen ; also left with it a new saddle and bridle. luformation to be given to Superintendent Milne, Police Office, Town Hall, Bury, Lancashire.— Bow- St., October 19. • Supposed stolen from a field at Bighton, near Alresford, on the 11th instant, a black nag Mare, aged, 14 hands 2 inches high, white star on forehead, small white streak down to the nostril, near hind foot white, bang tail, the property of Mr. Cox F\) llett. Information to be given to Superintendent Everitt, Winchester, or to Sergeant Bennett, Hants Constabulary Station, Alresford.— Bow- street, October 19. Stolen on the night of the 14th instant, from Laindon Hills near Brentwood, a bay horse Cob, aged, 14 hands high, rough coat, in good condition, aud in consequence of a con- traction of the sinews of the fore legs treads on the forepart of the hoofs, the shoe of the near fore foot is worked round the front of the hoof to protect it. Also stolen, from Upminster common, near Romford, on the morning of the 15th instant, a dark chesnut Cob, 13^ hands high, 4 years old, star on forehead, rough coat, hind fetlocks white, and very strongly made.
