POLICE GAZETTE. BJ) AUTHORITY* CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and agamst Receivers of Stolen Goods, repute* Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Proper% that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4065 MONDAY, MARCH 13, 1865. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may bo made and addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. Whenever it Is desired that any person shouVu Be appre hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should l> o made and sworn to beforo a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, aud an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tlio Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor must foe prepaid, otherwiso the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 2nd instant, the dead Body of a newly- born female child was found in a back yard in Oldham ; the body was in a state of decomposition, and appeared to have been dead eight or nine days, but deposited in the yard only a few hours before it was found ; it was wrapped in a flannel petticoat with two small tucks at the bottom and bound with calico, the body and petticoat were tied up in brown paper, in the form of a parcel, the paper appealed to have been previously used as a wrapper, and had ' C !)' boldly written upon it. An inquest hasNteen held, and a verdict ot ' Wilful Murder' returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to the Chief Constable, Central Police Station, Oldham.— Bow- street, March 8. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Description of five men committed for trial to the present Lent Assizes, charged with arson : JOHN STEELE, 26 years of age, 6 feet G inches high, dark brown hair, dark eyes, fresh complexion, and intelligent looking, has two boil scars on left side ; says he is a native of Portsmouth and served 4 years in the 4th Light Dragoons, purchased his discharge ; a puddler, and worked as such in Yorkshire. GEORGE WILSON, 21 years of age, 6 ft. 7| in. high, dark hair, eyes ( deep set), and complexion, oval face, slender, angular scar on left cheekbone, left thumb has been fractured, lest a joint off right middle finger, scar in right groin, and has & t sharp appearancc; says he is a native of Northampton, a bellows- maker, and can make mats ; supposed to have been in Oxford Gaol. WILLIAM THOMAS, 22 years of age, fi feet 4$ inches high, dark iiair, eyes, and complexion, numerous small moles on face, thin beard, stout, ' D. D.' on left side, a native of Manchester, a puddler ; supposed to have been in the 5th battalion Military Train, and in China. RICHARD LEAVER, alias JOHN WESTWELL, 10 years of age ; he was convicted of larceny 20th February, 1803, at Blackburn. WILLIAM RANDALL, 16 years of age, 6 feet 2J inches high, brown hair, grey eyes, sallow completion, oval face, scar corner of left eye ; a collier, and native of Calver, Derbyshire. The names are supposed to be fictitious. Information to be given to the Governor of the County Gaol, Brecon.— Bow- street, March 3. FORGERY. Description of WILLIAM MORGAN, who absconded on the 2nd instant from Mathry, in the county of Pembroke, charged with forging an Order for the delivery of drapery goods : he is a draper's assistant, about 30 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers ( trimmed short), and proportionate figure; dressed in dark cloth overcoat, dark plaid cloth trousers, and high crowned felt hat. Information to he given to Captain A. B. O. Stokes, County Chief Constable, Haverfordwest; or to Sergeant George Evans, Chief Constable's Office, Haverfordwest, South Wales, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- st., March 6. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON Stolen on the 10th instant, from the person of a gentleman in Paisley, a patent lever gold Wqtch, gilt dial, jewelled in eight holes. No. 10524, maker J. Alexander, London. £ 5 reward will he paid on the recover-^" of the offender or offenders. The other, 17 or 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, dressed in light Inverness cape and supposed black cap. These men took railway tickets from Manchester to York on the 7th instant, and stopped at Bolton Percy Station, and inquired the way to the hall where the sale was held. Information to be given to Superintendent Parkin, West R ding Constabulary, Tadcaster, Yorkshire. — Bow- street, March 10. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. During the night of the 10th instant, the bouse of Mr. Bevan, No. 34, Charles- street, Cardiff, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : seven large electro plated Forks ; twelve small Dessert ditto ; four electro- plated Table Spoons ; an old- fashioned Spoon, marked ' J. E. B.'; three electro- plated Dessert Spoons ; four electro- plated Tea Spoons; a pair of Half- wellington Boots, nearly new, maker's name, ' G. Day,' inside ; a brown fur Victorine and Cuffs, new ; a dark linsey Skirt and Body ; a grey Muff, lined with scarlet; a black cloth Jacket; a brown Coburg Cape ; a Skirt; and an old Putty Knife. Further information respecting the man charged with burglary at Luton, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 27th uliiino : he is further charged with breaking and entering the dwelling- house of Mr. Edwards, Luton, on the same night, and stealing the following property : 6 silver Tea Spoons, and 1 Mustard Spoon, with crest— a lion rampant. 2 plated Forks. 36 gold and enamelled Lockets. 18 pairs of gold Ear- rings. 3 dozen fine gold and bright gold Scarf Pins. 6 dozen gold plated Brooches. 6 dozen gold split Rings. 2 dozen silver Thimbles. 1 dozen silver Albert Chains. 1 dozen gentleman's gold Scarf Rings. 9 coloured gold Victoria Chains. 6 fine gold Necklet Chains. 6 pairs of plated Sugar Tongs. 1 pearl handle silver Butter Knife and Pickle Fork, crest— a lion rampant, on the handles. 1 pair of side- spring Boots. 1 fine blue cloth Overcoat, with velvet collar. 1 blaek silk Hat, with blue lining, maker Oke, Wakefield. 2 common Razors, one tortoiseshell, the other ivory handles. When last seen he was wearing the stolen clothes. Information to he given to Superintendent S. Pope, Luton, Beds, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, March 10. On the night of 6th instant, between 6 and 8 p. m., the dwelling- house of Charles Heritage, of Bicester, was entered by means of false keys, and a silver Watch with ' Chas. Heritage' engraved on the inner works; a small silver Tea Spoon, marked ' S. G. M.'; and about 16s. in Copper and Silver Monies, were stolen therefrom. Two men were seen to leave the house : one about 6 feet 10 inches high, thin face ; dressed in a dark scull cap, long. dark coat, and cord trousers fitting tight to the legs. The other is 5 feet 6 inches high, and stout; dressed in a dark brown coat, and black hat. They stop at low lodging or public houses, and are supposed to be mnking their way to Birmingham. They can be identified. Information to be given to Superintendent Thomas Moulden, Bicester, Oxon, by whom all reasonable expenses will be paid. — Bow- ttreet, March 8, During the night of the 1st instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. William Shoesmith, of Kirdford, was broken and entered by a navvy of the following description : about 26 years of age, 6 feet 6 or 7 inches high, fair complexion, light sandy hair, no whiskers, king's evil mark under left ear, and ears pierced for rings; dressed in white moleskin trousers nearly new, lace- up half boots nearly new, an old brown pilot jacket, darned on the shoulder, blue pilot waistcoat, pearl buttons on pockets, round billycock hat with wide band, and a red coloured neckerchief. Part of the stolen property has been found pledged at Brighton, viz « : a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' J. E., 1816.' Two electro- plated Tea Spoons, marked ' W. M. S.,' are still missing. This man left Brighton on the 3rd instant, and is supposed to be travelling through East Sussex and Kent. Information to be given to Superintendent Kemmish, West Sussex Constabulary, Petworth.— Bow- street, March 8. During the night of the 22nd instant, the dwelling house of Mr. George Wing, of Luton, was broken and entered by a man of the following description, who violently assaulted Mr. aud Mrs. Wing while they lay in bed : about 38 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slender make, long face, large Roman nose, face very much freckled, straight brown hair, whiskers shaved off, gruff voice, supposed to have been occasioned by a wound in the throat, a female figure, lion, & c., tattooed oil left arm, and a crucifix, & c., on right, a lar^ e scar across front of the throat, and several other scars from sabre wounds said to have been received in action. He has been recently discharged from Hertford Gaol; he is in the habit of getting refreshment at public- houses and beer- shops and leaving without] paying; dressed in a blue top coat with velvet collar, black hat with narrow brim, has goloshes or slippers ; was seen at Codicote on the 28th ultimo, going towards London. A pair of Trousers of the following description was stolen ( which he is supposed to be wearing, as he left his own behind): dark tweed, with a light raised seam, the seam on the left leg at the bend of the knee is worn quite through, and on the right leg near the bottom are seve- al grease spots. He is supposed to have been in the army, and is very likely to be found in the neighbour- hood of some of the barracks in London, as he stated that he intended to go to London to see a friend of his who was in the same regiment as he had been. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will cause him to be apprehended. Infor- mation to be given to Superintendent S. Pope, Luton, Bed- fordshire.— Bow- street, March 6. During the night of the 1st instant, the Royal Hotel, Purfleet, was broken and entered, and 19s. in Silver, several shillings' worth of Coppers, and a curled witney cloth Over Coat, with black velvet collar, black raised buttons, and had a yellow silk Handkerchief in one of the pockets, stolen there- from. Information to be given to Inspector Rutledge, Police Station, Orsett, Essex.— Bow- street, March 6. During the night of the 3rd instant, the cottage of Mrs. Haslop, at Trumpington, was broken and entered by tramps, who stole therefrom two Workboxes, one rosewood, the other shell, containing a Penknife, some Bills, a common Brooch, and a Strap ; a Tablecloth and Towel; 2 lbs. of Butter, and some Meat and Pudding. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Stretten, 12, Newmarket- road, Cambridge.— Bow- street, March 6. Between 10 a. m. and 12 noon on the 1st instant, the dwelling- house of J. Dowett, Norwood Green, Hipperholme cum- brighouse, Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : a silver lever Watch, with silver dial, No. 7215 ; 2 Shawl's one black the other light coloured. Information to be given to Superintendent Copeland, Halifax, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 3. During the night of the 6th ultimo, the dwelling- house of J. F. Moon, at Netley Cliff, was broken into, and the following property stolen therefrom: a plated Coffeepot, a Teapot, a Cream Jug, and two Salt Cellars, all marked ' E. 400 S.'; six Egg Spoons, marked ' E. 1856 S'; 2 Salt Spoons, marked ' E. 1854 S.'; a Butter Cooler, marked ' 4001 E.'; a new dark cloth Coat and Trousers, and a light Waistcoat. C. STUB- BINGTON, S. BELLOWS, and W. LEGG, have been appre- hended and committed for trial at the next assizes. The pro- perty has been recovered, except the Teapot, Coffeepot, and Cream Jug. Information to be given to Superintendent H. Stannard, llants Constabulary, Bitterne.— Bow- st., March 3. Stolen by means of housebreaking at Etna Mill, North- umberland, between the 20th January last, and 28th ultimo, a pair of Blankets; 3 pairs of Sheets ; a grey Quilt ; a Pillow ; and a Sack ; the property of James Sivess, mason. Informa- tion to be given to Police Constable N. Hutchinson, Ford, by Cornhill, Northumberland.— Bow- street, March 3. Description of two tramps who have absconded from Tadcaster, stealing a quantity of Linen, < fcc., by housebreaking, at Burrowby, near Wetherby, Yorkshire, between ttie 21st and 23rd ultimo : one known by the name of NEWCASTLE JEMMY, alias DUBLIN JACK, about 26 years of age, 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair aud whv kers, tuft on chin, and flesh mark on right cheek ; dressed in black jacket, vest, and trousers, black cloth cap with. brass button at each side, such as is worn by engine- drivers, large woollen muffler, and shoes ; and the other is known by tne name of CHORLEY, about 33 years of age, nearly j » feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, hair, and whiskers, and stoutly biTilt; dressed in light coloured coat, fustian vest, and corduroy trousers; sells London Journals and occasionally begs ; both are of dirty appearance. During the night of the 28th ultimo, a dwelling- house at Saltord was broken aud entered, and the following property stolen therefrom: a silver Coffee Pot, ' William Gaylor' engraved on it; a Mustard Pot and Spoon, six Table Spoons, a Gravy Spoon, seven dessert Forks, four Salt Spoons, a Butter Knife, Hevun Dessert Spoons, all silver, and marked'H.'; an electro- plated Sugar Basin and Cream Jug, marked ' H.'; eleven silver Tea Spoons, marked ' J. M. G.'; a pair of silver Sugar Tongs, marked ' G.'; an electro- plated Toast Rack, a silver Tea Pot, a silver Cream Jug, three silver Tops ot Castors and Spoon, two electro- plated Sauce Ladles, a glass Sugar Btsin with electro- plated frame, an electro- plated bedroom Candlestick, two electro- plated pearl handled Butter Knives, ami four eleotro- pluted Egg Spoons. An^ person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders find recovery of the property, shall receive £ 20 reward, or in the proportion to the amount recovered, on appli- cation to Head Constable James Taylor, Town Hall, Saitord, Lancashire.— Boxo- st., March 3. Further information respecting the burglary at Erins Utilise, Argyllshire, advertised in Police Gazette of the 6th ultimo. JOHN WATTS has been apprehended. Stolen from a field at Witton, near Birmingham, on the nirfht, of the 8th instant, one Tup, four Ewes, and eight Weathers, one of the ewes has since been found, all marked, * W-. B.,' and are dark faced MINI woolley about the head and fae » , the property of Mr. William Bragg, of Witton. Three men were seen driving some sheep at 7' 30 the same night, in the direction of Bilston, Cosley, und Wednesbury. Infor- mation'to he given to Deputy Chief Constable S. Bloxham, Aston, near Birmingham.— Boic- strcet, March 13. Supposed to have been stolen from Cranham Wood, near Painswick, on the night of the 7th instant, four Donkeys, one a light- coloured Gelding ; another a dark brown Mare, with ctaly ooat; another a dark russet brown Gelding, has a sub- stance ou the hoofs of both fore feet, hair on the forehead grey from age, a little hair off the fetlooks ; and the other a dark brown Mare, saddle marks on both sides : all of them have a mark on top of the neck from wearing a bell. Absconded Irom Great Barr, Handsworth, near Birming- ham, tharged with stealing a Pony and Cart, & c, THOMAS KENT, About 23 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, stoutly built, low forehead,' fair complexion, very large nose, and light brown hair; dressed in a white smock frock, billycock hat, and laoe- up boots. Information to be given to Major McKnight, Deputy Chief Constable, Westbromwich, Staffordshire, who1 holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 13. Suppoied to have been stolen from a field at Cotton, Suffolk, between the 3rd ar. d 6th instant, a ewe hoggett Sheep, half- bred Leicester, marked with a dot of red paint on rump. Information to be given to the Police at Finningham, near Stowmarket, Suffolk.— Bow- street, Mtirch 10. Found at Hamptons- wood, near Ellesmere, Salop, about a week ago, supposed to have beeti stolen, a chesnut Colt, about 12 mouths old, flaxen mane mid tail, white blaze down fore- head, two white fetlocks, is in low condition, and lame in one shoulder.
