CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Ooods, reputes Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as passible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 4043 FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1865. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or tending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be mado and addressed to MB. C. *.* Whonever it is desired that any person should tie appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to tho Editor for insertion. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as thoso from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " Tho Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. On the 14th instant the dead Body of a newly- born female child was found in a gutter at the bottom of an entry in Good- win- street, Derby ; a coroner's inquest has been held, and a verdict returned of ' Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Chief Constable George Hilton, Town Hall, Derby.— Bow- ttreet, January 20. Found on the 10th instant, in the Duke of Bridgwater's Canal at Altrinohani, the dead Body of a male child, about 2 months old, dressed in a white calico slip, with crochet work on neck and wrists, needlework on shoulders, wrists, and front of body, a flannel wrapper with calico body, linen shirt with edging on neck and one wristband, all of which are old, but of good quality ; linen binder, caddy napkin with flannel barrow over it, white wool socks, and brown mixture tweed hood ( home- made). An inquest was held on the 13th, and adjourned till the 30tli instant. Information to be given to Superintendent Andrews, Lymm, or to Inspector Britnor, Altrincham, Cheshire.— Bow- street, January 16. Description of JAMES PIPER, who absconded from Portsmouth on the 9th instant, charged with the wilful murder of his wife : 24 years of age, 6 feet G inches high, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, pale face, very long flat nose, small whiskers, slight moustache ; dressed in short brown cloth coat of very coarse texturo and material with pockets at the sides, white cord vest, old military trousers with the red seam taken out, dark cap with French peak, red and black woollen muffler, and elastic side- spring boots. He is an engine- fitter, and was apprenticed at the South- Western Railway Loco- motive Works, Nine Elms. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent R. Barber, Portsmouth.— Bow- street, January 13. On the 7th instant the dead body of a newly- born female child was found, wrapped in part of an old linsey dress, buried in a field under a stone, at Olchon, in the parish of Clodock, Herefordshire. A coroner's inquest was held on the 10th instant, and a verdict returned of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Shire Hall, Hereford, or to Superintendent W. Blunsdon, County Constabulary, Abbey- dore, Herefordshire — Bow- street, January 13. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of a lady in Manchester, on the 18th instant, a dark green leather Purse, containing a gold twisted Ring with a forget- me- not in pearls, a gold diamond Ring with five diamonds and two vacant spaces for others, an ivory Tooth- pick broken at the end, and 24s. in Cash. Any person giving such information as shall l. ead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, shall receive £ 6 reward. Information to be given to Superintendent Anderton, C Division, Police Station, Fair- field- street, Manchester, or at any Police Station in the City. — Bow- street, January 20. On the afternoon of the 12th instant, Mr. R. Barr, of Arden, farmer, was attacked upon Arden Moor, and rob! ed of a double- cased silver Watch, maker, Syduey Raper, Thirsk, No. 07900, with an old German silver Chain and two Seals ( one a man's head upon it, the other crossed) attached. By a man of the following description : about 23 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 6 inches high, light ginger hair, no whiskers, broad face, and proportionate figure ; stated that he was a groom at racing stables, and at times a horse breaker; dressed in a dark grey shooting coat, vest, and trousers ( torn at the thigh), black billycock hat turned up at the sides, red check necktie, new black, red, and white woollen muffler, laced boots with brass eyelet holes, and carried a stick about 2 feet long. Informa- tion to be given to Inspector Smith, Thirsk, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Bolton, on the night of the 18th instant, an old- fashioned gold Watch, ' Roskell, Liverpool,' on dial, has double cases, and white dial. Information to be given to Chief Constable James Harris, Borough Police Office, Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- st., Jan. 20. Stolen about 3' 30 p. m. on the 17th inst., from the person, in Corporation- street, Market- street, Manchester, a gold lever Watch, No. 30245. Any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the watch shall receive £ 2 2s. reward, on application to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, January 20. Stolen about 6 p. m. on the 14th instant, from the person of a gentleman, in the neighbourhood of Cross- street or Market- Btreet, Manchester, a gold double- backed lever Watch, gold dial, maker Kershaw, London, No. 3008, had a gold Albert Chain, with Key, attached. Any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offender, and recovery of the property, shall receive £ 5 reward, on application to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, January 18. On the night of the 16th instant, Mr. Edward Smith was attacked on the road about half a mile from Newtown, and robbed of a leather bag Purse, containing £ 31 10s. in Gold and 6s. in Silver, a Pocket- book, and an old- fashioned verge Watch with steel Albert Chain attached, by three men: one is about 6 feet high, and dressed in dark clothes and cap ; the others of middle size, and dressed in dark clothes and caps. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent Danily, Newtown, Mont- gomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 18. Stolen at 8' 30 p. m. on the 26th ultimo, from the person of a gentleman in Manchester, a silver duplex chronometer balance Watch, jewelled in six holes ( rubies), No. 1027, maker Gardner, Manchester, had attached a gold Albert Chain, curb pattern. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender of offenders and recovery of the watch, on application to Superintendent Gee, A Division Station, Albert- street, or at any Police Station in Manchester. — Bow- street, January 16. Stolen on the 8th instant, from the person of Mr. John Keon, of Leasingthorne, near Bishop Auckland, when at Pityme, near Durham, a silver patent lever Watch, maker Harris, Sunderland, No. 10785, had attached to it a small link silver Guard. Also stolen about the same time from Mr. Keon, a white and tan bull Bitch, a few black spots on her head, and answers to the name of ' Bloss.' Supposed by a navvy of the following description : 28 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, proportionate make, and a native of Westmorland ; dressed in a half- worn pilot coat, moleskin trousers, greyish cap turned up at each side, and navvy boots. On the morning of the 9th instant he was at Bishop Auckland, and later on the same day he was seen making his way to Barnard Castle. He stated that he was going to work on a new railway on the borders of Yorkshire or Westmorland. A reward of £ 1 will be paid on recovery of the property, and conviction of the offender. Information to be given to Superintendent Johnson, Constabulary Office, Durham, or to Superintendent Henderson, Bishop Auckland, Durham.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen about 5 p. m. on the 10th instant, from the person of a gentleman, at the Victoria Railway Station, Manchester, a j plate gold engine- turned open face Watch, enamel dial, maker Joseph Penlington, No. 10020. Information to be given to Captain Palin, Chief Constable Town Hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, January 13. Stolen from the person of a gentleman in Aldershot, on the evening of the 4th instant, a double- bottomed hunting duplex gold Watch, No. 21467, makers Leatherland, Davis, & Co., Liverpool, and a gold drop Chain with two Guineas, Locket, and several French Coins attached. £ 5 reward will be given for any information which will lead to the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. In- formation to be given to Superintendent W. Howard, Hants Constabulary, Aldershot.— Bow- street, January 13. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Description of HENRY PHILLIPS, who was apprehen- ded for burglary, and remanded till the 14th instant, and then discharged for want of sufficient evidence. The whole of the property having been found, a warrant has been issued for his re- apprehension : about 30 years of age, 6 feet 8f inches high, light complexion, very slightly pockpitted, rather blotchy face, hazel eyes, long eye lashes, brown hair, a few whiskers prin- cipally on chin, and small light moustache, rather slight made, can read and write imperfectly, speaks with a Scotch accent, but has more the appearance of a German, walks with his head rather forward, and loose gait; states he has been a ship's carpenter, but is a joiner by trade, is well acquainted with Whitechapel and ' Other parts of London. All reasonable expenses will be paid on his apprehension. Information to be given to Superintendent Jenner, Lewes, or any Police Station, in East Sussex.—- Bow- street, January 20. On the night of the 15th instant, the house of Mr. John Edwards, of Newtown, was broken into, and £ 7 in Gold j £ 3 in Half- crowns ; three black hafted Knives and Forks ; six new Knives and Forks, buffalo horn handles ; a new Razor; an old Razor, black handle ; and a silver guard Chain, stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Superintendent Danily, Newtown, Montgomeryshire.— Bow- street, January 18. Stolen by means of housebreaking, during the night of the 13th inst., from the dwelling- house of the Rev. W. Hazel, Wood- street, Wallingford, a gold open- face engine- turned Watch, very o'd and much worn, maker Hickman, Oxford, No. 16353; and two small brown Vases. Information to be given to Inspector Robert Johnson, Berks Constabulary, Wallingford.— Bow- street, January 16. Stolen by means of housebreaking, at Westerham, Kent, on the 14th instant, from the cottage of Frederick Arrow : a black cloth Coat, nearly new, bound with black braid, four pockets in each flap, one outside left breast, and one inside of right breast, nearly under the arm; a pair of dark check Trousers, the right leg IK. ' een mended at the bottom with a small piece of different -> n. vial; an old black cloth double-* breasted Vest, torn at attorn button- hole on left side ; a black cloth Vest, neari ew, one corner ot the left pocket torn ; a blue check Bundre Handkerchief, has two small holes near the centre; and a red and white coti > n Handkerchief. Information to be given to Superintendent Coleman, Police Court, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, January 10. Between 6 p. m. on the 9th and 1 p. m. o : the 10th instant, Delaford House, Iver, Bucks, the resideoce oi C. Clewes, Esq., was broken and entered, and a plain unpolished oak Box with brass hinges, about 15 inches long by 7 inches wide, containing a bank book and two other books of memoranda of property, receipts, family letters, & c. ; the books had parchment covers. Three men of the following description are suspected : one, about 26 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyes, black hair cut short, tuft of hair on chin, rather slender figure ; dressed in black frock coat, dark trousers, and black cap with peak : another, 24 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, pale complexion, dark eyes, dark hair, small whiskers, rather stout figure ; dressed in frock coat, dark trousers, and high Slack hat: and the other, 22 years of age, 5 feet high, fresh complexion, dark eyes, brown hair; dressed in dark overcoat, dark trousers, dark cap with pe!) k, and silk muffler. Information to be given to Superintendent Hodgkinson, Police Station, Slough, or to Inspector Ray, Iver, Bucks.— Bow- street, January 13. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Idle Moor, be- tween 2 and 4 p. m. on the 10th inst., a half- bred wether shear- ling Sheep, marked across the loins with ruddle, on the near side with ' B ' in tar ; the property of F. Hodgson, of Bolton. Information to be given to Superintendent Ball, Court House, Bradford.— Bow- street, January 20. Description of RICHARD WILLIAMS who absconded from Bicester, on the 14th instant, charged with stealing a Horse : about 40 years of age, 6 feet 5 inches high, and dark complexion ; dressed in a blue frock coat, black hat, cord breeches and leggings; is a Welshman and low horse dealer, frequeuts low public- houses, and is known at Abingdon and its neighbourhood. Information to jbe given to Superintendent Moulden, Bicester, Oxon, who h . Ids a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, January 20. The boy described in the Police Gazette of the 9th inst., suspected of having stolen the brown Horse at Chadlington, and brown mare Pony at Dean, has been apprehended at Lud- low, with the horse and pony in his possession; the man is still at large, he is dressed in corduroy trousers, leather leggings, strong lace- up boots, the laces being new and white. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. R. Fernsby, Chief Constable's Office, Oxford, or to Inspector J. Lakin, Police Station, Chipping Norton, Oxon,— Bow- street, January 18. The three Cows advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th instant, as stolen from Aston, near Birmingham, were sold at Stourbridge Market on the 13th instant, bv a man who gave the name of WILLIAM ROBERTS, of Birmingham, from 30 to 35 years of age, about 6 feet 5 or 6 inches high, thin pale face, small light whiskers, a blue mark near the right eye ; dressed in a new blue smock frock, dark cloth overcoat, and black hat. The cows have since been recovered at Wor- cester. Any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension of the offender will be paid all reasonable expenses. Information to be given to the Deputy Chief Con- stable, Aston, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, January 18. Description of a man giving the name of CHARLES DE JONGH, alias PIERRE VAN IMPE, a Belgian, who states that he is a professor ot languages, in custody at Welton, Yorkshire, charged with stealing, at Leeds, on the 12th instant, a bay Mare, a set of Harness, and a Dog Cart, which have been recovered : 28 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, oval face, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, small dark moustache, blue eyes ; dressed in black hat, grey tweed suit, and elastic- side boots. Had in his possession several pawn tickets relating to Watches and other property pledged at various places. It is supposed that he has committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Superintendent Thom Ward, Welton, Brough, East Riding of Yorkshire.— Bow- street, January 18. Description of two lads apprehended at Ludlow, Salop, on the 12th instant, charged with horse stealing in Oxford- shire, and remanded to the next petty sessions at Chipping Norton: one, about 18 years of age, about 5 feet high, stout make, broad face, light hair ; dressed in white slop over cotton 2 POI/ ICE GAZETTE, January 20. — j, —,—,———— , cord jacket, cord trousers, leather leggings, strong lace- up boots, ssul black jimcrow hat : the other, about 14 years of age, slight make; dressed in old- fashioned drab coat, cord trousers, lace- up boots, and dark cap. A man escaped at the time the lads were apprehended, about 28 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, brown hair and whiskers, walks very erect ; dressed in a rough brown overcoat, leather leggings, and low black hat. They had in their possession ( supposed to have been stolen) a half- bred light bay Mare, about 8 years old, about 14 hands high, white stripe down face, marks from saddle on both sides, switch tail, white spot on nose, mark of cut between eyes ; an aged roan- coloured mare Pony, very rough coat, long tail. 11 or 12 hands high, hair rubbed off one leg near the hock ; and three Carts, one covered, with ' Thomas Brown Liverpool,' painted on right side. Found, supposed to have been stolen, a bay half- bred Mare, about 7 } ears old, l. H bands high, black legs, small star on forehead, in good condition, and supposed to be in foal. In- formation to be given at the Police Office, King's Heath, near Birmingham.— Bow- street, January 16. Found straying at Dudley, on the 10th instant, and sup- posed to have been stolen, a brown grizzled Horse, rising 4 years old, about 14 hands high, white streak down the face, wall eyed, and two white hind fetlocks. Information to be given to Chief Superintendent Burton, Police Office, Dudley, Worcester- shire. — Bow- street, January 16. Supposed to have been stolen on the 7th instant, from a meadow at lloppingwood Farm, New Maiden, a dark chesnut mare Pony, 12 or 13 hands high, aged, white stroke down the nose, hang tail, branded ' B' on near shoulder, deficient of near hind shoe.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, January 16. Supposed to have been stoleu on the night of the 14th inBtamt, from a yard at Slope Hill Farm, in the i arish of Shalbourne, near Hungerford, Berks, the property of Mr. John Platt, a black nag Gelding, 5 years old, nearly 15 hands high, switch tail, small star on forehead, one white heel, shod all round, and in good oondition. Information to be given to Mr. John Platt, Hungerford, or to Superintendent Harfield, Berks onstabulary, Newbuiy.— Btuv- sireet, January 16, Found in the borough of Monmouth, on the 9th instant, and supposed to have been stolen, a mare Pony, rising 6 years old, very dark iruii- grey almost black, about Il£ hands high, bang tail, black legs, and of the forest breed. Information to be given to Head Constable Edmund Wheeldon, Borough Police Office, Monmouth.— bow- street, January 16. Stolen on the night of the 8th instant, from the stable of Mr. Thomas Abbott, of High Needham, near Longnor, Staffordshire, a black cob Mare, about 7 years old, about 14 hands high, small star on the forehead, long tail reach- ing to the hocks and very busby, saddle marks on both sides, has eaud cracks on each fore hoof, the near one very plain, has been newly shod and turned up all round, toe and heel, and is very smart and active; a Halter was taken with the mare from the stable, by which she is supposed to have been ridden away, and with which she was tied. A man, apparently between 60 and 60 years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, dressed in a short, pair of black trousers, showing bis dirty white stockings, a black billycock slouched hat, a dark grey overcoat, with a dirty white slop underneath, and wearing clogs, is suspected of having stolen tiie said mare ; he has been about High Needham, Longnor, and neighbourhood, and talked of Mow Hill and Stoke, Staffordshire, where he is supposed to be known ; the mare is believed to have gone for the Potteries. Information to be given to Superintendent Rust, Constabulary Office, Bakewell, Derbyshire; to Mr. Abbott, High Needhani ; to Police Constable Turner, Taddington ; to Poliue Constable Batkin, Longnor ; or at any of the Police Stations in Derbyshire or Staffordshire.— Bow- itreet, Jan. 13. Stolen on the night of the 28th ultimo, from the Tower- farm, Layer Marney, the property of William Sach, Melling, an entire Donkey, 5 years old, white face and belly, long tail, and no shoes. Information to ha given to Superintendent J. May, Witham, Essex.— Bow- street,. January 13. Obtained by false pretences on the 13th ultimo, a brown Unr^ e, clipped, 15 hands high, star on forehead, saddle marked, laws sliglicly chipped, and in good condition ; a light spring Cart, paintml bltttt with white lines, new dash iron, felloe of one wheel split, ' C. Tankard, 1, Durham Street, Hackney Road, N. K.' on it ; Harness, brass mounted, nearly new. By WILLIAM WEST, 23 years of age, 6 feet 3 inches high, dark hair and complexion ; dressed in drab overcoat, plaid trousers, drab cap, and leggings. Supposed to be travelling in the country, accompanied by a man, 25 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and complexion ; dressed similarly to West. A warrant has been issued for the apprehension of West.— Metropolitan Police, K Division, January 13. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from High Wycombe, on the 10tli instant, charged with stealing a silver Watch, which lias since been recovered, a watchmaker named FREDERICK HANCOCK, about 28 years of age, 5 feet 1 or 2 inches high, brown hair and whiskers, quick eye, and a few blotches on forehead ; wears a grey suit of clothes, with a low crown black felt hat; he iB seeking- work as a watchmaker. Information to be given to Superintendent Davis, High Wycombe, Bucks, who holds a warrant for His apprehension.— Bou- street, January 20. Absconded on the 17th instaut, from the Athaeneum Club, Pall Mall, stealing a drinking Cup, four Gravy Spoons, five Table Spoons, four Dessert Spoons, two Forks, two Punch Ladles. six Toddy Ladles, four Sauce Ladles, four pairs of Sugar Tonga, Hnd forty silver Wine Ladles— all silver, a man, AO years of age, 6 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, light hair, bushy whiskers ( dyed); dressed in brown mixture walking coat with pockets on hips, dark trousers, and hat.— Metro politan Police, C Division, January 20. The man advertised in the Police Gazette of the 9th inst., charged with larceny at Viscount Holmesdale's, Staplehurst, has been apprehended at Birmingham.— Bow- st., January 20. Stolen on the 19th instant from the house of J. Vaughan, of Tranmere, Cheshire: a black cloth Frock Coat, Trousers, and VeBt; a pair of grey cloth Trousers, with black stripe ; a black aud white plaid Vest, bound with braid; a silk Hand- kerchief, light coloured, large size, marked ' J. V/; a white cajjuo Shirt, linen front and wristbands ; and a brown holland Table Cloth. By a man who obtained lodgings the night before by stating that lie was about to work at a ship building yard as a rivetter the next morning : he is about 26 years of age, 6 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and complexion ; dressed in dark cloth; clothcs, and black billycock hat He is supposed to have committed similar offences at Liverpool. Information to be given to Superintendent Thos. Hammond, Abbey- street, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, JanuaxjK. Stolen from a house at Lofthouse, Yorkshire, during the night of the 18th instant, tlw property of John and James Green, a black cloth Coat, two pockets in laps outside, and one in left breast ; a black cloth Coat, two pockets outside, and one in lelt breast; a blue cloth slack- back Coat, two pockets outside, and one in left breast.; a pair of black cloth Trousers ; a pair of black cloth ribbed ditto ; a pair of Bedford cord ditto ; two black cloth Waistcoats ; a black cloth ribbed ditto ; a black silk velvet ditto ; a red woollen Shirt, with black spots ; a blue and white striped cotton ditto ; a blue and white silk Handkerchief; a satin ditto, white border ; and a cotton ditto, spots in middle. By a man who gave his name GEORGE HENRY DUNN, of Midddlestown, but residing in Wakefield, a stonemason or nutter, 24 years of age,. 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, light brown hair ; dTetsed in black cloth coat and trousers, black and white woollen check waistcoat, soft dark billycock hat. and clogs. Information to be given to Superintendent Hall, Wakefield.— Bow- street, January 20. Description of PETER McLAUGHLIN alias CRUST, committed to the Prison of Linlithgow on a charge of breaking into a poultry- house in Kirkliston, and stealing four Hens and two Cocks therefrom, which have been recovered : 435 years of age, 5 feet 6J inches high, long face, fresh complexion, dark brown hair and whiskers cut close, blue eyes, sharp pointed nose, very large scar on right side of face, mark of cut on upper lip, front teeth irregular, and is in the habit of yawning or gaping when speaking; dressed in corduroy waistcoat with moleskin sleeves, coarse tweed trousers, checked regatta shirt with blue striped cotton shirt underneath, red woollen cravat, black cloth cap with leather peak, and clogs. He is a native of Ireland, but has been most of his lite in Scotland and England, and is generally employed ou railways in course of construction, as a waggon driver. He had in his possession a lady's white linen Pocket handkerchief, marked ' A. I.' or 4 A. J.' in Old English, with red thread, which is supposed to have been stolen.
