CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and agamsl Receivers of Stolen Goods, repute# Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged wuh Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Proper that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. No. 3955 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1864. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of tbe person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *.* Whenever it is desired that any person should oe appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and ail attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of. any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, alii abetters addressed to the Editor Illlist lie prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserter* and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those' from the regular Army, intended for insertion in tlie POLICE GAZETTE, may. be addressed to " Tbe Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. IN FOE M A T IO N 8 MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of two men who are charged upon a Sheriff Warrant, with violently assaulting a man and his wife with whom they had been lodging at Dalmuir, Dumbartonshire, on the evening of the 20th instant: JOHN LYONS, labourer, a native of Ireland, 25 years of age, 5 feet 65 inches high, fresh complexion, black eyes, dark brown hair, very small whiskers, stoutly made, and good looking ; dressed, when last seen, in a moleskin vest with sleeves ( rather dirty), brown vest, blue cloth trousers, dark cloth cap, striped shirt, and navvie boots, MICHAEL LYONS, labourer, a native of Ireland, 23 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, blue staring eyes, fair hair, no whiskers, very stout made, and good looking ; dressed, when last seen, in a moleskin sleeved vest and trousers ( very dirty), black cloth cap, striped shirt, and navvie boots. They applied for employment, which they did not obtain, at Leith Docks, on the 23rd instant, and they will likely apply for similar employment elsewhere, or they may get work on some railway. Information to be given to the Chief Constable of Dumbartonshire, who will pay all expenses incurred by the apprehension and detention of the offenders.— Bow- st., June 29. On the morning of the 24th instant, the dead body of a full giown new- born female child was found at the night- soil depot, Seven Stairs Bridge, Wigan, Lancashire, and is supposed to have been removed there from some of the privies in the town, during cleansing ; the body was naked, and the umbili- cal cord had been torn away. An inquest was held on the body, the same day, and the jury returned a verdict of ' Wilful Murder against some person or persons unknown.' Informa- tion to be given to , vi r. Description of an Irishman who is charged with, setting fire to several farm buildings and stacks in the neighbourhood of Daresbury, Cheshire, the last offences were co ^ mitted on the 23rd instant: he is very tall, 40 to 50 years of age, dark com- plexion, and round shouldered ; dressed in a grey frieze coat, cap, trousers ragged and out at knees, shoes much worn and cut across the upper- leathers at the toes. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Constabulary, Lymm, Cheshire. — Bow- street, June 29. Sergeant of Police, Wath, near Ripon, North Riding of York- shire.— Bow- street, June 29. Stolen from the person, in the Longrow of Campbeltown, Argyllshire, on the night of the 21st instant, a patent lever gold Watch, British make. No. 707, inscription on the inner case, ' Presented to John Wallace, Clerk, by the Supervisors and Officers of Argyll North Collection, as a Testimonial of respect. Oban, Feby. 1850.' Supposed to have been stolen by one of the Argyll and Bute Artillery Militia. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the said watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen from the person during the Volunteer Review, at Doncaster, on the 20th instant : a silver Geneva Watch, No. 20,628, maker Mouline, Geneva ; a silver Geneva_ Watch, engine- turned case, gilt border round edge, ornament on outer case, several words engraved on inner case, amongst them are ' Cylindre 5 Rubis'; a silver lever Watch, No. 1779, maker Taffinder, Rotherham, engraved on case J. Windle, Kilnhurst. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Isaac Gregory, Guildhall, Doncaster, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 27. Stolen from the person of Edward Edwards, farmer, on the 22nd instant, at the horse fair at Brampton Brian, Here- fordshire, a silver verge Watch, strong cases, bull's- eye glass, No. 18902, has ' Edward Edwards' engraved on the works, and a steel curb Chain, Seal, and a counterfeit Coin attached. In- formation to be given to P. C. Benjamin Roden, Clun, Salop. — Bow- street, June 24. frequent fairs with razor grinders and tinkers. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gough, Oswestry, Salop.— Bow- street, June 27. Stolen by means of housebreaking, in the borough of Portsmouth, on the night of the 21st instant : a black cloth lounging Jacket, pockets at sides, outside breast pocket, ' B. Joseph ' marked under loop behind, top button off, hole in right elbow ; a black lounging Coat; a tail Coat, pockets behind, lining and elbows much worn ; a large Table Cloth, a small ditto, two Tray Cloths, five Fish Cloths, and a coloured Cloth, all marked ' Hellard ' in ink ; a Toast Rack ; two Carving Knives and three Forks; two Poultry Knives and Forks ; a dozen large and a dozen small Knives, new ; between two and three dozen old Knives, all white handles, most of them marked ' Dudley '; a Shawl ; two pairs of Stockings ; and a silk Duster. The Horses found at Neenton, on the 19th instant, and advertised in tbe Police Gazette ot the 22nd instant, have been restored to the owners.— Bow- street, June 29. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen from the person of William Roberts, at Lower Bebington, Cheshire, about 12 o'clock midnight, of the 25th instant: a silver patent lever Watch, No. 581, maker's name Pierrepont, Liverpool, engine turned case, gold joints and figures, and had about two inches of a silver Guard attached to the bow. Information to be given to Mr. Thomas Hammond, Superintendent of County Police, Abbey- street, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, June 29. Stolen on # ie 24th instant, from the person of a gentleman, a gold lever Watch, enamel dial, engine- turned cases, maker Thomas Armstrong, Manchester, No. 66597. Any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the thief or thieves, and recovery of the watch, shall receive £ 4 reward, on application to Captain Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, King street, Manchester.— Bow- street, June 29. Stolen from the person of James Jordison, of Spa House, near Thirsk, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, at Borobridge horse fair, on the 22nd instant, an old- fashioned small silver verge Watch, very small at the neck, very large old- fashioned figures, had a small steel curb Chain, to Which was attached two Keys ( one broken) and a very old Sixpence, maker's name Deux Bowley, London, No. 2481. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, or to Alexander Campbell, BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between the hours of 12' 30 and 6 a. m. on the 26th instant, the dwelling- house and shop of Robert Duckworth, draper. Rimmington, Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz : 9 yards of Coburg, puce colour ; 40 yards of ditto, light and drab plaided ; 9 yards of ditto, black ; 7 yards of blue Flannel; 17 yards of Orleans, snuff colour ; 17 yards of ditto, drab; 17 yards of ditto, light and drab plaid ; 32 yards of Barege, square plaid ; 12 yards of black Diaper ; 18 yards of Alpaca, black and white ; 8 yards of cotton check Shirting, blue and white ; 12 yards of plain Calico ; 40 pairs of men's and women's cotton Stockings, drab and black and white ; and a quantity of copper Coin. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cockshott, West Riding Constabulary, Settle, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 29. Between the 18th ultimo and the 16th instant, the dwell- ing- house of John Laurence, Esq., Morpeth, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom : a white metal Candlestick, 9 inches high ; a ditto Pepper Caster, com- mon shape ; a ditto Salt Celler, round, with running flower round the edge, was originally silvered over, but is now effec- tually worn off; two German silver Tea Spoons, not marked ; and a claw Hammer with round shaft. Information to be given to Major Brown, Chief Constable, Alnwick ; or to Mr. Superintendent Robert Cocks, Morpeth, Northumberland.— Bow- street, June 27. During the night of the 24th iustant the dwelling- houses of Joseph Bayley, shopkeeper, William Read, fitter, and William Brown, shopkeeper, three adjoining houses in Mill- street, Crewe, Cheshire, were broken and entered : and about £ 2 in silver and copper and a black leather Portemonnaie lined with red stolen from Joseph Bayley's ; a pair of Blucher Shoes, nearly new, ' J. N.' stamped on bottom leather between sole and heel, from William Read's ; and about 6d. in copper from the shopdrawer of William Brown's. Information to be be given to Acting Inspector Wood, Police Station, Crewe, Cheshire.— Bow- street, June 27. During the night of the 15th instant, the shop of Mr. D. Rowlands, Tailor, Pennal, Merioneth, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : a pair of drab woollen cord Trousers, man's size, lined with lambskin ; a pair of old cashmere Trousers, drab colour, with fly front; yards of drab Fustian; yards of Drabbet; 1J yards of brown Calico ; J yard ot dark brown Cloth, speckled with white silk; 5 J- yards of small plaid Cloth, with Trimmings for coat and waistcoat. By two tramps of the following description: one about 28 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches or 6 feet high, fair com- plexion, light brown nair ( cut short behind), rather long nose, little or no whiskers, no moustache; dressed in loose brown jacket, drab trousers, and clogs, and is supposed to be wearing a grey cap or jimcrow hat; he carries his right hand in his coat pocket, is very talkative, and is a deserter from the 2nd Dragoons. The other is ' about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy hair, large sandy whiskers ; dressed in grey jacket and waistcoat, old fustian trousers, and grey cap with peak of same material, and had the appearance of a tramping navvy. They have been tramping through the counties of Denbigh and Carnarvon. Information to be given to P. S. Thomas Roberts, Aberdovey, Merionethshire.— Bow- street, June 27. Further information respecting the two gipsy women advertised in the Police Gazette of the 13th instant, charged with housebreaking at Crickheath, in the county of Salop. They are still at large, and are supposed to be encamping in some of the bye- lanes in Salop or the adjoining counties ; they go round the farm- houses and cottages telling fortunes, and The Pony advertised in the Police Gazette of the 15th instant, as supposed to have been stolen from Street Raleigh Farm, Whitaple, Devon, has been found and restored to the owner .- Bow- street, June 29. Supposed to have been stolen, on the night of the 23rd instant, from a field at Oxspring, in the West Riding of York- shire, the property of Mr. W. Wordsworth, a light bay Filly, 3 years old, hands high, white hind foot, lump about the size of a marble on nose, and is in good condition. Information to be give:', *• » Mr. Superintendent Greenhalgh. West, Riding Constabulary, Barnsiey, Yorkshire.— JSota- asr<; es, June 29. Description of a man charged on warrant with stealing a Donkey ( which has since been recovered), at Coates, in Whittlesey, Isle of Ely, on the 20th instant, the property of William Carter: about 18 years of age, about 5 feet high, light brown hair long behind ; dressed in cord trousers, white slop, and cap with peak the band of which was either cut or torn up behind ; he had with him a dark jacket which he may wear as well as the slop. He gave the name of OLDFIELD, son of a beerhouse- keeper at Guyhirn, which is false. He bought a german silver watch with a piece broken out of dial and an old brass curb guard chain, which he is likely to offer for sale. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Smith, Whittlesey, Isle of Ely.— Bow- street, June 29. Description of two men who are charged with stealing two lambs, at Swannington, near Norwich, on the 13th instant: HENRY PITCHER, 23 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, brown hair ( cut short), very deeply pockmarked, walks upright; dressed when last seen, in a dark cloth frock coat ( sometimes wears a shepherd's slop), light trousers ( peg tops) fitting close to the legs, lace- up boots, and a light cloth cap with check band ; he is a native of Hempnall, Norfolk ; sometimes works as a drover, but generally for horse dealers and breakers; is well known in Norwich, Norfolk, and Suffolk. WILLIAM STONE, alias MILCHEY, 23 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light hair, no whiskers, thin face, sharp nose, and square shoulders; supposed to be dressed in either a dark cloth frock or drab coat, tight trousers, and light cap with check band. Whoever will give such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of these men, shall receive £ 2 reward, on application to Mr. Superin- tendent Chambers, Aylsham, Norfolk, who holds a warrant for their apprehension.— Bow- street, June 27. Found by the Police at Cross Roads, near Keighley, Yorkshire, on the 16th instant, and supposed to have been stolen, a dark brown horse Pony, 3 years old, 14 hands high, small white star on forehead, slight enlargement inside near hind leg, low condition, and appears to have been hard worked. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gill, West Riding Constabulary, Keighley, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., June 27. Supposed to have been stolen, from a field at Malin Bridge, in the township of Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, during the night of the 22nd instant, the property of Thomas Bradshaw, of Malin Bride, butcher, a dark bay Horse, about 15 J hands high, with four black legs, a white star on forehead, swelled hock on the off hind leg, and has several small scars about the face. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gillett, Court House, Rotherham, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 27. Supposed to have been stolen, on the 12th instant, from a field near Broadwaters, Kidderminster, an aged white milch Cow. If stolen, a reward will be paid on recovery of the cow, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. James Gifford, Chief of Police, Town Hall, Kidderminster.— Bow- street, June 24. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Thavers End, Dudley, on the night of the 20th, or morning of the 21st inst., a black Mare, aged, about 16 hands high, white star on the forehead, and a swelling on the near hind fetlock. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Chief Superintendent Burton, Police Station, Dudley.— Bow- street, June 24. Supposed to have been stolen, from a field in the borough of Huddersfield, on the night of the 22nd instant, a yellow- brown roan Heifer, the property of Mr. Henry Wrigley, cotton spinner. Information to be given to Mr. William, Hannan, Chief Constable, Huddersfield.— Bow- street, June 24. Supposed to have been stolen on the night of the 20th or early on the morning of the 21st instant, from a small field in Newton, parish of Baschurch, a bright bay pony Gelding, 5 years old, 14 hands high, large white face, bushy tail, marks of recent sores on shoulders from the collar, high action, cut mark over one eye, the property of Mr. Charles Morris. Infor- mation to be given to P. C. Peter Bullock, Baschurch, Shrews- bury.— Bow- street, June 22. Supposed to have been stolen on the 14th instant, from a field at Longden, Salop, a black mare Pony, aged, about 14£ hands high, has a whfite star on forehead, and switch t> ul ; the property of Charles Davies, farmer. Information to oe given to Mr. Superintendent Ivens, County Police Office, Shrews- bury.— Bow- street, June 22. Supposed to have been stolen, on the night of the 17th instant, from Sychnant, in the parish of Llanelieu, near Tal- garth, Breconshire, the property of Evan Jones, Talgarth, a light brown cart Mare, about 5 years old, 14 hands high, has a few white hairs on the forehead and on the off side under the saddle, a small lump on the near shoulder, and turns her hoofs out when walking. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent David Evans, Crickhowell, Breconshire.— Bow street, Jwne 22. LARCEIY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Absconded from Coventry on the lst instant, charged with embezzlement, JOSEPH BEAMISH, accountant, 35 to 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair and eyes, sallow blotchy complexion, dissipated appearance, skit) rough about the mouth, and has two wens on his head, one over the left ear, which prevents his wearing a hat comfortably. Information to be given to Mr. John Norris, Chief of Police, between 1 and 2 p. m. on the 21st instant, stealing a Scarf Shawl, red middle, flowered border of various colours, and brown fringe ; a Scarf Shawl, white ground, with red and green flowers, and green fringe ; a silk Handkerchief; acotton ditto ; and a pair of Md Boots, girl's size, the property of Mr. Thomas Shaw, farmer, Stainland. She is about 16 years of age, rather tall and thin, light complexion, and light hair cut short, and stated that she had been in the Holmfirth Union Workhouse ; dressed in brown and white print dress, blue stuff petticoat, wears a shawl over her head, clogs, aud white stockings. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Copeland, West Riding Constabulary, Halifax, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, June 24. Description of a woman who is charged with stealing a black Bonnet, a brown woollen Shawl, and two white Aprons, at Wakefield, on the 21st inst.: she is about 22 years of age, rather tall, has a ' black eye,' and brown hair; dressed in a black bonnet trimmed with crape, dark woollen dress trimmed with green stuff, brown " woollen shawl, and white spirn. She left on the 21 Bt instant, in company with a man, > a roojiider, about 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, small' . beard on chin, cloth cap, red neckerchief, brown cloth square- rapped coat ( white smock underneath), and dirty fustian trousers. They passed through Barnsley on the 21st, for Birmingham. Information to be given to the Head Constable, Borough Police, Wakefield.— Bow- street, June 24. Stolen, 19th inst., from the dwelling- house of C. Beard well, of Hatfield- Peverell, Essex, gardener, a silver Geneva Watch, | makers Steffel and Cartier, Geneve, No. 10697, and £ 1 6s. lid in Silver and Copper Moneys. By a man, 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, very dark complexion, his whiskers appear to have been shaved off and have begun to grow again, and he has very large ears; dressed in a dark cap with peak, and dark clothes, and has the appearance of a foreigner. Absconded from Barnstaple, Devon, on the 18th instant, charged with embezzlement, JOHN FAIRCHILD, relieving officer of the Barnstaple Union, 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, grey eyes, florid complexion, dark hair and whiskers ( meeting), stoutly built, short neck, downcast look ; supposed to be dressed in light clothes : he will probably endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Mr. Blanchard, Chief Superintendent, Barnstaple, Devon.— Bow- street, June 29. Stolen from a lodging- house at Bingley, Yorkshire, on the morning of the 27th instant, five Half- Sovereigns, one Penny, and one Halfpenny ; also a pair of men's elastic- side Boots, nearly new, patent leather fronts ; and a jet Brooch. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Green, Kent Con- stabulary, Sittiugbourne ; or to Sergeant Thomas Noakes, County Police Station, Sheerness, Kent.— Bow- street, June 22. Further information respecting JOHN BLAKE, charged with embezzlement, advertised in. the Police Gazette of the 13th April last : he is still at large ; the hawker's licence he took with him is ' No. 9962, MICHAEL O'MALLEY, Man- chester,' instead of ' No. 4826, Merthyr Tydvil,' as previously stated ; he offered the licence for sale at Cardiff, and he then stated that unless he obtained employment in some of the neighbouring ironworks, he should go to Liverpool; frequents low public houses, and is fond of singing Irish songs ; it is supposed that lie lias relatives residing in Hope- street, Preston. Inlormation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Cecil, Borough Bow- street, June 22. Stolen on the 15th instant, from a lodging- house in the front ; he stated that he was an iron forger. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Gill, West Riding Constabu- lary, Keighley, Yorkshire.— Bow street, June 29. Stolen between Bangor and Aber, about 6 p. m. on the 23rd instant, a Pony Collar, with two patches on one side, the property of Henry Piatt., Esq.
