C. %• Whenever it is desired that any person shou\ a ue appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that un Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As na charge is made for the insertion of any article iji the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letter* addressed to the Editor mut toe prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS MURDER " AID MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Description of two men who are supposed to be concerned in the murder and robbery of Matthew Hodgson, on the high road between Hartlepool and Hart, Durham, on the 19th instant. They called at a house in Hartlepool about l( KiO p. m. j on the " 20th instant, and asked for lodgings, but were refused. One, 80 to 3- 5 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, pale complexion, freckled face, dark brown hair, short dark whiskers; dressed in light fustian trousers, old striped cotton shirt, and dark cap : he stated that he had broken out of Durham Gaol ( which is false), asked for a change of clothes, and was supplied with a blue guernsey with ' S' stitched in ! the breast, with red worsted, which he put on above his old cotton shirt ; he had neither coat nor waistcoat on at the time. The other, 28 to 32 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, pale complexion ; dressed in dark velvet coat, dark trousers, small dark cloth cap, and carried a bundle. They left the said house about 12 p. m., and went to the Town Wall, and were seen to throw the bundle into the sea, and run away. In- formation to be given to Mr. Superintendent J. W. Dixon, Durham County Constabulary, West Hartlepool.— Bow- street,, j March 30. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. During the night of the 14th, or the morning of the 15th instant, the ship ' Ellora,' then lying at the Spit in the Bristol Channel, was set on fire. A reward of £ 50 will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, to any person who shall give to Mr. John Iluxtable, Chief Superintendent of Police, at Newport, Monmouth, such information as shall lead to such conviction ; and any person c mcerned, not being the aclual offender, giving 6uch information, will be entitled to the reward, and effort will be made to obtain for him Her Majesty's pardon.— Bow- street, March 24. On the morning of the 14th instant, four stacks of Wheat and a stack of Beans, the property of Marshall Fowler, Esq, of Preston Hall, were set fire to. £ 20 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to the said Marshall Fowler, Esq., Preston Hal), near Stockton- on- Tees,— Bow- street, March 18. mation to be given to Sergeant Perkins, Cheadle, or to any of the Staffordshire Constabulary.— Bow- street, March 23. Description of a man who has absconded from Gloucester, charged with passing a forged note of hand for £ 16 17s. 6d , drawn upon the Gloucestershire Banking Company, Stroud, in the name of L. Winterbotham, on the 14th instant. He is from 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout, well made, full round face, fresh colour, blue eyes, light hair, small light whiskers turning grey, of gentlemanly appear- ance, and pleasing manner; dressed in a black frock coat, vest., and trousers, and high crowned hat ; carried with him a small black japanned case, and black or brown portmanteau ; stated that he travelled for Leslie, Jackson, and Co., Mersey Iron Works, Liverpool, goes by the name of T. . JACKSON, BAILEY, and THOMPSON. Another man, who gave the name of JOHN JULIEN JACKSON, and stated that he was travelling for the European and Colonial Wine Company, 122, Pall Mall, Lon- don, aud Messrs. Tipping, Chansarel, and Co., wine and brandy shippers, 79, Great Tower- street, London, was in his company at the time the forged note wTas cashed, and received some of the money to pay his hotel bill. The first man passed a forged order at Birmingham on the 6th instant, and has committed similar offences at the ' Docura ' hotel, Southampton, and the ' Jack of Newbury' hotel, Berks. It is supposed they are travelling together, and staying at the principal hotels in large towns. Information to be given to Mr. Charles Griffin, Super- intendent, Gloucester.— Bow- street, March 18. turned case, steel hands and seconds, maker Piquarez, Geneva; and a gold Geneva horizontal Watch with gold dial, maker Stauffer, Ex defonds, No. 7126, ' E. P.' engraved on the outer case. Information to be given to Mr. Isaac Gregory, Superin- tendent, Guildhall, Doncaster.— Bow- street, March 21. Between 7 and 9- 30 p. m. of the 16th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. George Giles, Bridge- road, Cherstsey, was entered by forcing the staple of bolt of door, during the absence of the family, and stole therefrom a gold Ring, cut and carved ; a Locket ditto ; a pair of Indian Bracelets with silver mountings ; an Albert Chain plated with gold ; and about £ 20 in Gold and Silver. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent C. Hollington, Chertsey, Surrey.— Boio- street, March 21. FORGERY. Description of RICHARD VELLACOTT, a farmer, late of Lynton, Devon, who is charged upon a warrant with uttering a forged deed of conveyance, with intent to defraud : about 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, complexion fresh, hair and whiskers dark ( turning grey), has a large cut on one of his cheeks, is very deaf, rather bow- legged, and stoops when walking ; generally dressed in black coat and vest, light cord breeches, wit h leggings or top boots. He will probably endeavour to emigrate. Information to be given to Mr. Thos. Blanchard, Chief Superintendent, Barnstaple, Devon.— Bow- st., March 30. Description of THOMAS WESTON, late Clerk to the Cheadle Board of Guardians, who is charged upon a warrant with forgery, who absconded on the 18th ultimo : he is about 60 years of age, 6 feet high, fresh complexion, rather long nose, small thin whiskers inclined to be sandy, light brown hair in- termixed with grey, which he wears rather short; generally dressed in black clothes, black stock round his neck, and black hat which he wears on the back of his head, wears his trousers pockets unbuttoned and flapping down, walks very erect, and is of respectable appearance, is very talkative, and sometimes repeats his woids ; has been a Wesleyan local preacher, and Mt StnffiiA nil thiiatn. h init '';' * t" 1 6' 15 a. m. Stolen from the person of a gentleman on Doncaster race- course on the 15th instant, an open- faced silver lever Watch, capped and jewelled, maker Samuel Sharp, Retford, No. 89840. Information to be given to Mr. Isaac Gregory, Superintendent of Police, Guildhall, Doncaster.— Bmo- street, March 30. Stolen from a person at Chertsey steeple chase, on the 24th instant, a gold engine- turned hunting Watch, maker's name Collie.' £ 10 reward will be paid on the recovery of the Watch, and conviction of the offender or offenders. Informa- tion to be given to C. Hollington, Superintendent of Police, Chertsey, or to Inspector Miller, Weybridge.— Bow- street, March 28. Stolen from the person at Chertsey steeple chase, on the 23rd instant, a plain gold hunting Watch, maker's name ' Wood,' Staines; crest, a bird on a stump of a tree, with ' W. R.' underneath, in old English letters ; a gold Chain, and two Seals attached, one seal an old- fashioned three- faced corne- lian ( dark red), the other a key and seal together, with ' W. Stolen on the 23rd instant, from the person of a gentleman, in Holborn, a silver lever Watch, maker Dent, No. 2 | 12522, gold Albert Chain attached.— Metropolitan Police, E Division, March 28. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, on the 25th instant, at the Oystermouth Railway Station, Mumbles, Glamorgan- shire, a single- case gold lever Watch, No. 2807, has a small bulge on case. £ 2 reward will be paid to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. Stolen from the person of William Wilson, of Hulme, near Manchester, on the night of the 25th instant, at Belle Vue- gardens, a silver skeleton Watch, maker Arnold, London, No. 2370. Stolen from the person of STEPHEN SIDDERS, in the borough of Faversham, on the 19th instant, a silver Geneva Watch. Stolen on the night of the 8th instant, from the person, an improved patent silver lever Watch, No. 21741, Liverpool make; and a blue Rug, with red and black star, nearly new, and new straps to buckle round neck, which are not neatly sewn on. Any person giving such information as shall lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, shall receive £ 5 reward, on application to Mr. Superintendent Chawner, Eckington, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, March 23. Stolen from the person of Mr. Alderman Gendall, of Salford, when at Hillsborough, near Sheffield, on the 15th instant, a gold patent lever Watch, makers' J. T. and S. Ollivant, Man- chester, No. 838. Also stolen from the person of John Hughes, of Manchester, broker, when at Hillborough, near Sheffield, on the 16th inst., a silver Geneva Watch. Also stolen from the person of Mr. Bright, of Hathersage, Derbyshire, when at Malin Bridge, near Sheffield, on the 17th instant, a gold Geneva Watch, makers Arnold and Dent, London, has an imitation of the rising sun and clouds over it engraved on the back. A reward of £ 25 will be paid to any person giving such infor- mation as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offen- ders, or in proportion to the amount recovered. Information to be given to Mr. William R. Bell, Chief Constable, Leeds.— Bow- street, March 30. Further information respecting the burglary at Alcester- heath, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th instant. The youngest of the two tramps suspected had on a dark Scotch cap, with a small piece of blue ribbon attached behind ; the other had light long hair, and wora 3 dark cap with peak. They gave the names of THOMAS and WILLIAM WILDEN, which are supposed to be false, their right name is supposed to be FLEMMING, A woman, supposed to be their mother, and three children, were with them at Alcester on the night previous to the robbery ; she was dressed in a black gown, a black widow's cap, and had a thin face; one of the children is a girl about 8 years of age, the other two from 4 to 6 years old, with black hats on ; one is a girl, the other a boy. The woman and the children were traced to Stratford- on- Avon and Warwick, and will very likely join the two youths suspected of the robbery, in some town on their way ; they are supposed V on their way to Nottingham or Shef- field. Informatwiji to be given to Mr, Superintendent Dunbar, Alcester, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, March 30. Between 6 and 9 p. m. on the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of the Rev. W. L. Gibbon, of Dartford, Kent, was entered by means of skeleton keys, during the absence of the family, and the following property stolen : a gold oval Locket, containing hair ; a gold Ring, with purple stone and two pearls; a pair of gold Ear- drops, blue and white enamel ; and about £ 2 in Money. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Brandon, Dartford, Kent.— Bow- street, March 28. Description of a Frenchman charged with breaking into the dwelling- house of George Whatley, of Chitterne, on the morning of the 23rd instant, and stealing two new black cloth Frock Coats, a pair of new black cloth Trousers, and a new hlue Guernsey Shirt, which he carried away and will probably dispose of; he speaks English, is about 25 years of age, stout built, dark hair and complexion, no whiskers ; dressed in a dark or black cloth suit, black bowler hat, lace- up boots with brass eyelets. Information to be given to Mr. Abbott, Super- intendent, Wilts Constabulary, Warminster. — Bow- street, March 28. During the night of the 25th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Matthew Hobson, of Langthorn, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : two small Hams, about 14 lbs. each, a piece of small twine is tied round the shank ends 5 and about 5 or 6 lbs, of roasted Beef. Information to be given to Inspector S. Alderson, Bedale, or to Mr. Superintendent Simpson, Leyburn, North Riding of Yorkshire.— How- street, March 28. inn, Spark Brook, who will give £ 5 reward if stolen, or if ; Riding of Yorkshire, a scarlet and purple woollen Shawl. By ' a man about 23 years of age, 6 feet 3 or 9 inches high, strayed £ 1 and expenses.— Bow- street, March 30. Found in Description of GEORGE GUN, shoemaker, supposed to be a native of Basford, Nottingham, who is charged ( with another since convicted), of bntglariously breaking into the dwelling- house of Ann Mellors, ot Brackenfield, Derbyshire, on the 21st of January last: he is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slightly built, dark brown hair, large eyes, and dark complexion ; dressed in brown cloth coat, cord trousers, cloth cap, and lace- up boots. He generally tramps the country, and often sleeps in woikhouses and pit cabins. Information to- be given to Mr. Superintendent Ronayne, Alfreton, Derbyshire, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Boio- st., March 28i Between the hours of 11 p. m. on the 22nd, and 6 a. m. on the 23rd instant, the dwelling, house of Miss Shepherd, of Horspath, near Wheatley, Oxford, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz. : about £ 23 in Gold, Silver, and Copper Monies ; 4s. worth of PoBtage Stamps; a Cheque on the London and Westminster Bank for ,£ 10, signed • P. J. Ward ' ; 6 lbs. of Shag Tobacco ; 4 yk Returns ditto ; about 3 lbs. ditto in 2oz. packets ; four Handkerchiefs, red and white ; four pairs of men's worsted Stockings ; a pair of white ditro ; a snuff coloured cloth Cloak, trimmed with braid and lined with dark brown silk ; a small shepherd's plaid Shawl ; and a boy's red and black jacket. During the night of the 21st instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Hugh Coppock, of North- road, near Macclesfield, in the county ot Cheshire, farmer, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen, viz. : a new lilac print Dress; a pair of twilled cotton Sheets, new; a pair of grey worsted Stockings ; a browu cloth sac Coat, pockets at the sides, lined with black alpaca, and torn on the left side; a red cotton Handkerchief, with white spots ; a brown alpaca Umbrella, nearly new ; an old fashioned silver verge stop Watch, with the hour finger broken ; 10 lbs. of fresh Butter; 8 lbs. of Cheese; 3 lbs. of Soap; and a small leather Purse with steel clasp, stitched at the bottom with white cotton, containing three Sovereigns, and a Receipt for Income Tax. Left on the 2nd instant, at a Veterinary Establishment, Greenwich, supposed to have been stolen, a chesnut, Mare, years old, 14 hands high, white hind fetlocks, star on forehead, small white mark on nose, rough coat, in low condition. By a youth, 18 years of age, 5' teet 2 inches high, fair complexion, light, hair, grey eyes ; dressed in black cloth coat with pockets on hips, knitted worsted vest, light worsted cord trousers tight to legs, red aud, black flannel shirt, black velvet cap, and lace boots.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, March 28;'. Tile Horse stolen from Nohottle, advertised in'the Police Gazette of the 14th instant, has been traced through Newport, Liighton, and Dagnell, Berks, in the possession of a man ( a gipsy), about 40 years of age, 6 feet 9 inches high, and dark complexion ; dressed in a rusty brawn coat, black billycock hat ; has a scar or a piece out of the nose ; is well known in Shepherd's Bush and the Potteries, aud is a horse coper ; the mare is 15 hands high, not 14, as before advertised. Absconded on the 19th instant, from 67, Portland- place, stealing the following property, viz.: a white moire Train ; a blue ditto; a white and gold spotted Tunic ; a poplin Dress, dotted with gold spots ; a quantity of scarlet velvet Trimming ; several pairs of Drawers, with work; half dozen blue and white china Breakfast Set; two china Jugs, as above ; a white and gold Jug ; a Guinea of the reign of George II or III; and ten old silver Coins, various— a footman, 30 years of age, 6 feet 7 ihches high, fair complexion, brown hair and whiskers, round faes, stout;, dressed in black, with grey frieze overcoat.—• Metropolitan Police, D Division, March 28. Stolen on the 22nd instant, from 370, Strand, a gold Geneva hunting Watch, maker Duffin ; a gold curb Neck- chain, rotund curb with slide, Indian make, and a bunch of Charms, attached ; a gold Pencilcase, ' Mordant's Patent;' a gold Seal, bjood stone ; an amethyst Seal; a gold Watch Key ; a 7s. Piece ; aud a iion Sixpence, with a hole in it. By a youth, 16 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, haircut short, and lisps; dressed in new black coat, and cloth cap with peak of the same.— Metropolitan Police, F Division, March 28. LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen on the 26th instant, from the ' Bear and Ragged Staff' public- house. Upper Ground- street, Blackfriars, a £ 5 Bank of England Note and sixteen Sovereigns. By a man, 30 years of age, 3 feet 6 or 7 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair and whiskers under chin, large mouth ; dressed in black vest, very large plain trousers, and Wellington bootB.— Mcti opolitan Police, L Division, March 30. Absconded from Warrington, on the 29th instant, stealing about 40s., the property of a fellow lodger, a man 22 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender make, dark hair and complexion, scar under right eye; dressed in shabby black, to be given to Mr. Superintendent Williamson, County Con- the coat torn near one of the buttons at, the back. During the night of the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Birchnall, of Sutton, near Macclesfield, Cheshire, was broken and entered, and tiie following property stolen: two small Hams, about 10 lb. each ; a cloth Cap ; two Combs ; a Hairbrush; a lahiiriiam Ruler; an Atlas; two Ellis's ' Exercises'; a Guy's ' Orthographical Exercises'; a Pinnock's ' History of England'; a Bible ; an ' Anecdotes'on Human Life,' With ' J. C. Pownall' and ' M. Pownall' written inside. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Williamson, Cdhttty Constabulary Office, Macclesfield, Cheshire.— Bow- street, ' March 21. He is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches Description of THOMAS JONES, alias TOM JANUARY, who is committed to Salop Gaol for fourteen days under the Vagrant Act: he is obout 27 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, long sandy hair and whiskers, and * T I' on left arm ; dressed in a long loose brown jacket, cord trousers, and black cap ; says he is a native of Conway, Merionethshire, appears to be of weak intellect, and it is suspecteid that he is an escaped lunatic, or that he has committed offences elsewhere. Description of a man who gave the name of LAWRENCE BURNES, who is remanded until the 2nd proximo, on a charge of breaking and entering a stable at Hutton, with intent to commit a felony: about 31 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark brown hair ( turning grey), blue eyes, sallow com- plexion, no whiskers, bracelet on right wrist, anchor on back of right hand, and ring on middle finger of right hand marked in blue ink, cut mark oil forehead, and large ulcer scars on left leg ; dressed in a dary cloth coat and vest, ribbed fustian trou- sers, light coloured cloth cap, and blucher boots ( nearly new). In his possession were found a pair of Pincers, a Screw Key about 8 inches long with one end broken off, a white cotton Shirt with linen front, and a fine diaper Towel, which were wet, and appeared to have been taken off a hedge. He stated that be came from Hull by way of Pontefract, Tadcaster, and York. A protection certificate for Royal Naval Coast Volun- teers, Hull Division, enrolled No. 1365, dated February 18C4, also a certificate of proficiency for the same corps dated 27th February, 1864, signed Robert D. Osbone, Gunner H. M. S. ' Cornwallis,' was also found in his possession. It is suspected tbat be has been previously convicted, as he appears to be well acquainted with prison dicipline.
