INFO 11 M ATION S away a grey single- breasted Top Coat, lined with green and red horse sheeting, fly fronts, one pocket, and a slit on each side from the pocket downwards, and a small tab on the collar to button over the neck. A man of the following description is charged with the offence : he is known by the names of JOE and JOBBY, 32 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy bair, bald on crown of head, very thin red whiskers, grey eyes, and squints; dressed in round- about fustian jacket, cord trousers with three buttons outside each knee, and strong navvy boots plated at heel and toe : he is a farm labourer, and a native of Sebergbavn, Cumberland. He left home on the 16th instant, and may seek employment on railways or other public works. £ 2. reward will he paid for his apprehension and conviction. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Carson, Penrit. li ; or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- slreet, November 23. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. Found at 10 a. m. on the 12th instant, on the beach oppo- site the Royal- crescent, Margate, the dead body of a newly- born male Child with its throat cut. A piece of thin lining was tied round the neck and over the head of the child, which appears to have been the lining of a cloak or mantle of a dark brown merino or stuff. A reward of £ 60 will be paid by Her Majesty's Home Secretary to any person who will give such information as will lead to the discovery and conviction of the murderer or murderers ; and the Secretary of State will advise the grant of a free pardon to any accomplice not being the actual murderer, who will give such evidence as will lead to the same result. Information to be given to Mr. H. Saun- ders, Chief Superintendent, Town Hall, Margate, Kent.— Bow- street, November 27. Description of JAMES alias JAMIE. READEN, alias RIDDELL, who is charged ( with three men in custody and remanded) with as aulting and wounding P. C. Henry Robert- son, while in the execution of his duty at Hexham, on the night of the 11th instant. lie is about 32 years of age, nearly 5 feet G or 7 inches high, proportionate make, swarthy com- plexion, and pockpitted ; he hawks nuts, cheese, < fcc., at races, airs, and linings, and is supposed to travel very often about Carlisle and Dumfries. Description of the three men in custody, viz.: WILLIAM GARLAND, 34 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, proportionate make, dark complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes ; states that he is a native of Lancashire; JACOB JELLY, 35 years of age, 6 feet 6 inches high, proportionate make, dark complexion, dark brown hair, and brown eyes ; states that he is a native of Liverpool; and ALFRED CURTIS, 31 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, proportionate make, fresh complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; states that he is a native of Leicester. They are all nut hawkers, and were hawking nuts at the hirings at Hexham on the day the assault was committed. Information to be given to Major Broune, Chief Constable, Northumberland Constabulary, Alnwick ; or to Mr. Super- intendent Stephenson, Hexham, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, November 27. About 3' 30 a. m. of the 18th instant, whilst P. C. Casson, of the Cheshire Constabulary, was on duty near the house of a gentleman at Bromborough, he saw a man in the front garden ; and upon going towards hipi, he made off, pursued by the constable. After going about 100 yards, the man turned round and fired a pistol, the contents of which slightly grazed the b » ck of the constable's hand. The man ( who made his escape) is about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender make, smart and active, and dressed in dark clothes. The pistol was found at daylight near the place where it was fired off, and also a cap worn by the man. The pistol is double- barrelled, grooved, and German silver mounted, with cap box at butt end ; the cap is a brown cloth, with silk tassel at the top, hook- and- eye in front. Information to be given to Superintendent Hammond, Cheshire Constabulary, Birkenhead.— Bow- street, November 20. On the 17th instant, the dead body of a newly born male Child was found in the Peak Forest Canal, at the Hyde Wharf, Hyde, Cheshire, wrapped up in a piece of black merino and white calico, part of the skirt of a female's dress. At a coroner's inquisition held on the 19th instant, a verdict of ' Wilful Murder' was returned against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Mr. Little, Deputy Chief Constable, Hyde.— Bow- street, November 20. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Description of a man who is charged with setting fire to a Stack at Butterwick and Boythorpe, on the night of the 18th instant: about 20 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark hair cut short, blue short slop, red waistcoat, cord trousers, old greasy cloth cap, and luce- up boots. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Harper, Norton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November 25. IitVoV ® TO< iJ4 to be given to Mr. Isaac Moores, Chief Superintendent, of iMice, Stockport.— Bow- street, November 23 , Stolen from the on of a farmer, who had been attend- ing the cattle fair at Ashton- under- Lyne on the 21st instant, one £ 10 Bank of England Note, four £ 5 ditto, and eight or nine Sovereigns. By two females, who were accompanied by two men. One of the females is about 35 years of age, low set, stout, full face, light Complexion, and dressed in a light coloured dress, dark shawl < r cape, and dark coloured bonnet; she spoke with an Irish accent: the other is about 25 years of nge, tall, stoutly made, light complexion, pockpitted, and dressed in a dark shawl and bonnet. The men were rather tall, and dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given at the Town Hal1, Ashton- under- Lyne, Staffordshire.— Bow- st., November 23. FORGERY. On the 17th instant, a Bank Cheque, addressed to the Agent of the City of Glasgow Bank, Trongate, Glasgow, payable to Mr. R. Lusk, wholesale provision merchant, Greenock, for £ 105, and signed by ' Alex. Osborne,' purporting to be the signature of Alexander Osborne, cheese merchant, Candleriggs, Glasgow, and endorsed on the hack ' W. & A. Coats, per Thos. Anderson,' purporting to be the endorsation of Messrs. W. & A. Coats, provision merchants, Paisley, was presented at the office of the Clydesdale Bank at Greenock, by a young man of the following description, who received in payment £- 55 in Clydesdale Bank Notes and a Letter of Credit in name of W. & A. Coates on the Clydesdale Bank for £ 50, No. 580, dated 17th instant, and payable to Hendry Munro, Glasgow. It has been discovered that the foregoing signatures are forgeries. He is about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 to C inches high, slender make, sharp features, black hair, no whiskers, dark eyes, fresh complexion ; dressed in a dress hat, dark sac or office coat, and ( supposed) dark trousers and vest: genteel and respectable appearance, spoke English well, but is supposed to be a Scotchman. Information to be given to Mr. Super- intendent David Dewar, Greenock.— Bow- street, November 25. Absconded from the service of Mr. Pear), No. 32, Upper Eaton- street, Pimlico, charged on a warrant with forgery, EDWARD BURT, ostler, 26 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stoutly built, red face, dark brown hair, curling behind his ears, dark whiskers down to the chin, Roman nose ; dressed as a stableman. It is requested that inquiry be made at livery stables, horse dealers, & c. Information to be given to Inspector Hamilton, Detective Office, City of London Police, Old Jewry, London, E. C.— Bow- street, November 23. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Between 5 and 6 p. m. on the 24th instant, as the Rev. E. Taylor was on his way home, on the highway leading from Newbiggen to Temple Sowerby, Westmorland, lie was attacked by three men, and robbed of a £ 5 Bank of England Note, marked on the hack ' J. D. Thompson'; a £ 5 Note of the Cumberland Bank ; eleven Sovereigns; two Halt- sovereigns ; some Silver ; and a leather Purse with steel clasp, containing receipts and momoranda, on one of which was written ' Bland,' on another ' Blakeman.' One man was about ( J feet in height, dressed in dark low- crowned or billycock hat. and dark square lapped jacket: the other two are 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, one supposed to be dressed in dark cap and grey coat, the other in a daik cap. It is supposed that one of the men is wearing a pair of strong boots or shoes with two rows of sparables in the soles and broad plain heel and toe plates. Stolen on the 21st instant, from the person of a gentleman in the pit of the New Royalty Theatre, Dean- street, Soho, a gold open face Geneva Watch, white dial, makers Moulinerne, Freies, Aiguilles.— Metropolitan Police, C Division, Nov. 26. Stolen about 6 " 0 p. m. on the 19th instant, from the person of a gentleman, at the door of the Theatre Royal, Manchester, a gold lever Watch, enamel dial, centre seconds, chased cases and edge with shield in the centre, maker George Hammond, Cross- street, Manchester, No. 7427. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the watch. Information to be given to Captain Palin, Chief Con- stable, Town- hall, King- street, Manchester.— Bow- street, Novem- ber 23. Stolen about 11- 30 p. m. the 17th instant, from the person of a gentleman, in the city of Manchester, a gold lever Watch, gold dial, No. 63927. Information to be given to Capt. Palin, Chief Constable, Town Hall, Manchester.— Bow- st., Nov. 23. Absconded from Stockport, in the county of Chester, charged with a garotte robbery on the 1st instant, two men of the following description : JAMES MAY, alias SHELAN, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fresh complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair, face freckled, slenderly built; dressed when last seen, in light clothes, and light cap ; he is a pedestrian, a native of Stockport, and has been several times in the Knutsford and Salford Houses of Correction. WM. BROADBENT, alias LIMPER, alias RICKER or RICK- BUJiGLARY AND HOUSE JSRBAKXMTa. On the night of the 22nd instant the dwelling- house of Mr. George Medcalf, a farmer, in the parish of Hurst, Berks, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom : a grey or lilac cloth Coat, with nap resembling Irish frieze, two pockets outside, one inside left breast, corners of skirts rounded, smoke pearl buttons, and without cuffs; a pail- of men's half Wellington Boots, double soles, small heels with double row of brads, a little worn on the outside, and red morocco lining ; alaige half bound Book, ' The Cottage on the Cliff,' in gilt letters on the back, and ' Sarah Lovell, 1848,' in gilt letters, on a small square piece of morocco pasted on the inside of cover. Information to be given to Mr. O'Neill, Superintendent, Berks Constabulary Station, Wokingham.— B' . .-- street, November 27. Stolen during the night of the 21st instant, by means of housebreaking, from Mr. Thomas Gibson, of Abbey Mill, in the prrish of Marton, a black Top Coat, two pockets outside and one inside, with black covered buttons, man's size ; a boy's black mohair ditto; four pail- of men's lace- up Boots, three with brass holes; a scarlet and plaid Shawl, with scarlet border ; and a Carving Knife and Fork. Supposed by tramps. Information to be given to Inspector Hunter, North Riding Constabulary, Easingwold ; or to Mr. Superintendent Driscoll, Clifton, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, November 27. Description of a man who is charged with stealing Money from a cottage at Lytchett Matravers, Dorset, on the 22nd instant, by means of housebreaking : he is a navvy, about 18 or 20 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather stout, no whiskers ; dressed in a white jumper, fustian trousers, leather strap round the waist, heavy boots, and black deerstalker hat ; ' is very young in appearance. Information to be given to Mr. Baynton, Superintendent, Dorset Constabulary, Wimborne. — Bow- street, November 25. Between 6 and 7 p. m. on the 22nd instant, a dwelling- house in Bold- street, Stretford, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz.: a £ 10 Bank of England Note, No. R ( Q, under) 59991, dated Manchester, • January 8, 18G3 ; a J10 ditto, No. R ( Q, under) 59992, dated Manchester, January 8, 1863 ; a £ 5 ditto, No. R ( W uuder) 40684, dated Manchester, January 12, 1803 ; £ 7 in Gold ; £ 3 in Silver; and a silver Tea Spoon, marked ' FR II'. Infor- mation to be given to the Superintendent of the County Police, Old Trafford, near Manchester.— Bow- strect, November 25. The dwelling- house of Messrs. Miller and Ewens, pawn- brokers, North- street, Chichester, was broken and entered during the night of the 23rd instant, and the following property stolen therefrom : 1 old- fashioned silver Table Spoon. 1 Dessert ditto. 5 silver Tea Spoons, engraved handles. 6 old fashioned ditto, not engraved. 5 ditto, marked ' I A. R.' 3 plated Table ditto and Sugar Tongs. 1 large silver hunting Watch, plain cases, 14,447, No. 65 in the upper case. 1 old- fashioned pair- cased silver Watch. 1 silver Geneva hunting Watch, engraved cases, nearly new, scratched inside case ' v | vi | x.' 3 or 4 silver Geneva hunting Watches, engine turned cases, private mark scratched inside with a pin, supposed ' v | i | x' or ' v | v | x.' 1 gold carbuncle Pin. 1 small gold ditto, jockey's cap ( blue and white). 1 silver Ring with blue stones. 1 pair of new black cloth trousers. 1 pilot Monkey Jacket, plaid lining. 2 small gold Lockets. 1 new blue- striped Shirt. A quantity of wedding and fancy Rings. A small Box, containing old Gold and Silver. A few silver Guards. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the con- viction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the pro- perty shall receive £ 5 reward. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Everett, Chichester.— Bow- street, Nov. 25. On the night of the 18th instant the school house at Chulmleigh, North Devon, was broken into. Mr. John Wood, Superintendent B. Division, Devon Consta- i and pigs in different parts of England for some time, and are biliary, Southmolton.— Bow- street, November 23. During the night of the 19th instant, Denton Hall, near. Grantham, the seat of Sir G. Earle Welby- Gregory, Bart., was broken and entered, and the following property stolen there- from : six plain silver Table Spoons, seven plain old silver Tea Spoons, all having crest— an arm in armour, holding a sword out of clouds over flame ; two Half- sovereigns ; a brown cloth riding Coat, pockets behind, of a red mixture, covered black buttons, has been repaired on the inside of left lap with the same cloth put on the wrong way, a piece has been taken from the inside of right lap to repair under the arms of sleeves, which are plain without cuffs ; a pair of gentlemen's strong lace- up shooting Boots, with nails and leather laces. Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Superintendent Sharpe, County Police Station, Grantham, or at the Chief Constable's Office, Lincoln. — Bow- street, November 23. Between 1 and 2 a. m. on the 18th instant, the dwelling- house of Wm. Whitaker, of New Inn, Rimmington, farmer, was broken and entered, and a pair of men's Shoes, small size, which had been soled, with a row of nails round, and three brass eyelets on each side ; a leather shoulder Strap, about | of an inch wide and about 4 feet in length, with an iron buckle at the end, the tongftejjf which is very sharp ; a Pasty and two Tea Cakes were also stoi^ avtherefrom : supposed by a tramp, for bare foot prints, of a small size, were visible on the. soil outside the window. " - » About 3 a. m. on the 21st instant, the house and shop of Mr. John Smith, grocer and draper, Dufton, Westmorland, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen : a jjan Purse, with partition, jugged at the top, containing from 30s. to 40s., consisting of a crown- piece, half- crowns, shillings, six- pences, threepenny and fourpenny pieces; also 3s. or 4s. worth of Postage and Receipt Stamps. At the back p irt of the house where the entrance was effected, a crabtree walking- stick, with half the head broken off, was left near the door, and the foot- prints of a heavy boot or shoe, which was 11^ ins. long, from 3L ins. to 3f ins. broad, plain heel and toe plates, rounded at the heel; seven rows of round headed hobnails in the sole, viz , two rows up each side, and three ( straight) up the centre ; the heads of the hobndls are near § in, across. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Parks, Constabulary Office, Appleby, Westmorland ;•' or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle,— Bow- street, November 23. On the night of the 19th instant, the saddle- room of Dr. Gully, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom, the property of the coachman : a light drab livery Overcoat, metal buttons; two black dress Coats ; two pairs of dark Trousers ; six Neckties, various colours ; two silk Pocket Handkerchiefs, one with red spots ; six white Shirts, some marked ' W. H.' in front; six pairs of unbleached cotton Stockings; a dark coloured Vest; and a pair of light cashmere gaiters. Information to be given to Mr. Superinten- dent Geo. Checketts, TJpton- on- Severn, or to Acting Inspector G. Turner, Malvern, Worcestershire.— Bow- street, November 23. Description of JACK WILSON, alias S1RRILLA, for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, charged ( with Richard Davies, in custody) with housebreaking and robbery. He is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, rather thin face, dark complexion, black whiskers, he may have a small moustache, tuft of hair on chin, sunburnt, and looks like a foreigner; dresses usually in black, with hat and crape band round it. He is well known in some parts of London. Infor- mation to be given to the Deputy Chief Constable, Police Office, Bedford.— Bow- street, November 23. J& ORSE Stolen during the night of the 23rd instant, from Cudham Lodge, Kent, the property of Mr. Solomon, a West Down Ewe, marked ' S.' on the rump in black paint. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Column, Sevenoaks, Kent.— Bow- street, November 27. Stolen between the 2Gth ultimo and 6th instant ( supposed on 30th ultimo), from Kelsocleuch, in the parish of Morebattle, and county of Roxburgh, twenty- one Cheviot ewe and wedder Hoggs: nineteen of them are buisted in tar with the letters ' B. H.' on the near rife, and two of them buisted with the same letters on the near buttock, and with a cross on the off hip ; one double- back- bit on the near ear, and one single- bit; they were in lean condition, and unfit for the butcher. A reward of £ 10 is offered in the name of the Sheriff of Roxburgh, to any person who shall lodge such information with the Chief Constable of the county as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders ; and a further reward of £ 10 is offered by Mr. Thomas Elliot, Hyndhope, payable on conviction. In- formation to be given to the Chief Constable of Roxburgh, Jedburgh.— Bow- street, November 27. Supposed to have been stolen, about the 1st instant, from a field in the parish of Abbeydore, Herefordshire, a light coloured Mare Donkey, small size, hair rubbed off at bottom of shoulders by the collar, good in harness, and very active, the property of T. F. Lewis, Esq., Abbeydore Court. Infor- mation to be given to T. E. Lewis, Esq. ; or to Mr. Superinten- dent W. Blunsdon, Constabulary Station, Abbeydore, Here fordshire.— Bow- street, November 27. Supposed to have been stolen ou the 23rd instant, a dark brown cob Pony, about 14,'- hands high, 9 years old, rough coat, and short tail cut square, the property of the Rev. A. Armytage, of No. 8, Sydenham- villus, Cheltenham. £\ reward is offered for the recovery of the pony, and conviction of the offender or offenders ( if stolen). Information to be given to Superintendent Charles Coleman, Cheltenham, Gloucester.— Bow- street, November 27. Description of two men now in custody at Salop County Gaol on a charge of obtaining by false pretences eighteen ewe Sheep, of the cross breed, black faces and legs, the property of Mr. Mansell, Adcotts, Salop, farmer, on the 25th of June last, also 69 Cheviot Sheep from Mr. Buck, Edenhurg, in October last. JOHN BELL alias JAMES GRANTLEY, 49 or 50 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, swarthy complexion, grey hair and eyes, large grey whiskers, bald on top of head : states that he is a native of Fieldsworth, Lancashire ; is married, and has five children from 7 to 21 years of age, in Roscommon- street, Liverpool; that he resided at Pickford- place, Pickford- street, Manchester, and at Hanover Chambers, Long- acre, cattle dealer; and is known by the name of James Grantley at No 4,' Violet hill, St. John's- wood, Portland- town. And FREDERICK COOKSON, No. 5, Field- place, Bagnigge- • wells- road, 32 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, dark com- plexion, dark eyes, dark hair and moustache ; he is a native of Charles- street, Woolwich ; his mother resides at Beckley Newton, Kent; and he has six children, from 3 months to 9 years of age. These men have been obtaining sheep, rams, supposed to have committed offences in Hampshire, Nottingham- shire, and Yorkshire. Information to be given to Mr. Super- intendent Ivins, or Detective Sergeant John Dovey, County Constabulary Office, Shrewsbury,— Bow- street, November 27. ' The brown cob Horse advertised in the Police Gazette of the 25th instant, as stolen from Drayton, Norfolk, has been found and restored to the owner.— Bow- street, November 27. Supposed to have been stolen, from a field at the parish of Charlton Kings, near Cheltenham, on the 17th instant, a dark roan- coloured Bull, about 15 months old, the property of Mr. Richard Burrows. Information to be given to P. C. Samuel Fowler, Police Station, Charlton Kings; or to Mr. John Nieholls, Deputy Chief Constable, Police Office, Cheltenham. — Bow- street, November 27.
