CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felony, and, of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputes Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead lo their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them,. Notice.— It is requested that all communications for the pur- pose of obtaining or giving information respecting supposed offenders, or stolen property, may bear the Signature of the person requiring or sending the same, and all applications in reference to the POLICE GAZETTE may be made and addressed to MR. W. D. BURNABY, the Editor, Police Court, Bow- street, London, W. C. *,* Whenever it is desired that any person should bo appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably necessary that an Information should he made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for tbe insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all J> tters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Army, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for. War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W.," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS FORGERY. Absconded from Bristol, on the 24th ultimo, charged with Forgery, and also with embezzling the monies of the Trustees of Roads, WILLIAM BROWN DRURY, late surveyor of roads of the Aust aud Horfield district: he is 33 or 34 years, of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, very sallow complexion,' dtti'lc brown hair, whiskers and moustache, round features, good looking, and supposed to be bald ; dressed in black cloth coat, vest and trousers, and black hat; sometimes wears a white felt hat with brim turned up at the sides; has been residing at Pelham- house, Berkeley- road, Horfield ; his father resides at Birmingham, and has relations at Bromsgrove ; was formerly in the employ of the Water Works Company at Preston. In- formation to be given to the Chief Superintendent of Police, Bristol, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, : 12. ROBBERY AND LARCENY S FROM THE PERSON. The man charged with presenting a pistol at, and stealing a Purse from, the person of a young lady on the turnpike road at Thurnby, in the county of Leicester, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant, has been apprehended.— Bow- street, August 12. Stolen between 1 and 6 a. m. 9th instant, from the person of James Harding, while in a boat on Grand Junction Canal, North Hyde, precinct of Norwood, a leather Purse, containing £ 1 9s. By a man, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, very much pockpitted, brown hair, no whiskers ; dress, dirty white slop, moleskin trousers, old cloth cap.— Metropolitan Police, T Division, August 12. Stolen in Brighton on the 7th instant, from the person, a double case silver lever Watch, maker ' Widenham and Adams,' a stout gold Albert Chain and Key with a green and white stone attached. Information to be given to the Borough Police, Town Hall, Brighton.— Bow- street, August 10. Stolen from the person of a lady at Tewkesbury Regatta, on the 4th instant, a lady's gold Watch, maker's name Jacob Locke, No. 94489. Also stolen from the person of a lady, while at the Midland Railway Station, Cheltenham, on the same day, a lady's gold verge Watch, has a gold dial, with raised figures, no seconds hand, and has a scratch between the figures 11 and 12. Supposed by travelling thieves, who visited the Regatta at Tewkesbury. Information to be given to Mr. Charles Coleman, Superintendent of Police, Cheltenham. — Bow- street, August 10. Stolen, on the 30th ultimo, from the person of Mr. Bell, of No. 2, Burton- street, Burton crescent, while in Euston- square, a lady's gold Watch, open face, Roman numerals, a wreath of flowers on back, maker ' Aguill, No, 1G48G.' — Metropolitan Police, E Division, August 7. Stolen from the person on the Race- hill, Brighton, on the 4th instant: . 1 gold lever Watch, ' R. W. Stolen from the person of a gentleman, in the city of Ripon, by violence, about 9.30 p. m. on , the 5th instant • a silver Geneva Watch, jewelled in five holes, rather delved at the back ; a brown twilled silk Umbrella with rustic stick, quite new ; a Pincushion, Osborne House on one side and looking- glass on the other ; a small Wharncliffe Pocket- knife ; a few Dutch copper Coins ( cents); and a few small English silver Coins. By two young men, supposed dressed in grey coats and caps. Information to be given to Mr. W. Burniston, Chief Borough Police Officer, Ripon, Yorkshire.— Bow- st., August 7. Stolen from the person of Benjamin Ince, between 7 and 9 p. m. on the 4th instant, at Jackfield, Broseley, Salop, a Sovereign. By HENRY BURROUGHS, 22 years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark sandy whiskers, and supposed to be dressed in a suit of black cloth clothes : is of respectable appearance, and has been recently discharged from the Wolver- hampton Police Force. Information to be given to Mr. Super- intendent McWilliam, Bridgnorth ; or to P. C. J. Chase, Broseley, Salop.— Bow- street, August 7. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. Between the hours of 1 and 2 a. m. on the 8th instant, the jewellers shop of Mr. Simpson Mowday, situate in the High- street, Chesham, was burglariously broken and entered, and the following Watches stolen therefrom, viz. : 1 English lever Watch, consular cases, No. 7115. 1 metal gilt Geneva ditto, open face, No. 63307. 1 ditto, ditto, consular cases, open face, small size. 1 ditto, hunting Watch, large size. 2 English verge Watches, consular cases, unfinished. 1 plain hunting Watch, winds up in face, and chipped round the key hole. 1 silver Geneva Watch, open face, No. 25520. 1 metal Geneva ditto, open face. 4 verge ditto, with German silver consular cases. 2 silver verge ditto, double- cases, one large size, the other small. 3 old ditto, in new cases, unfinished. 4 good second- hand ditto, in consular and hunting cases. Three men are suspected, one of whom is a boatman, a native of Dudley, Staffordshire, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, fair complexion, and rather stout built; dressed in a blue cloth monkey- jacket, cord trousers, dark cap with peak, and blucher boots ; a returned convict, having been con- victed 4 years ago for a similar offence upon the same person at Berkhampstead, Herts. The others are described as having a dirty appearance, and one is rather taller than the other ; dressed in a blue and white striped slop, and an old white felt hat turned up at the front and sides. Information to be given to Mr. C. Hodgkinson, Superintendent of Police, Wycombe, or to Inspector Jas. Carruthers, County Police Station., Ches- ham, Buckinghamshire.— Bow- street, August 12. On the 9th instant, between the hours of 11 a. m. and 1 p. m., the dwelling- house of Mrs. Maria Sheppard, West- street, Fare- ham, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz. : 1 chased silver quart Cup, with two handles, ' Maria Knight, 1788,' engraved on it. I large old- fashioned double- cased silver Watch, gold hands, and large gold Key attached. 1 small silver Geneva Watch, open face, No. 99. 2 large silver Table Spoons, ' W. M. S., 1831,' engraved on them. 6 silver Table Spoons, with three initials on them. 7 silver Dessert Spoons, two . with initials ' E. S.', two ' S. S ', one 1 L. S.', and two not marked. 12 silver Tea Spoons, initials ' W. M. S.' 1 pair of Sugar Tongs, ditto. 1 small silver Punch Ladle. 1 large gold Ring for keys, old- fashioned, with plain gold Ring attached to it, ' gift of a friend,' marked on the inside. 1 plain gold Mourning Ring. 1 gold Ring with small Stone. 1 small gold Ring with small blue forget- me- not. o 1 small oval gold Brooch, set in pearls, with the letter ' C' in the centre. 1 gold Brooch with plaited hair. 1 Brooch with white stone and sprig of small stones. 1 small silver Pencil Case. 1 red silk Purse, containing 5£ Sovereigns. 1 lon? green silk Purse, containing 3 Five- shilling Pieces, and 10 Half- crowns. 1 Pocket- book containing about £ 6 in Money, and several Memoranda. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Drew, Hants Constabulary, Fareham.— Bow- street, August 12. Between the hours of 10 p. m. and 6 a. m. on the night of the 10th instan:, the shop of Mr. Robert Parnaby, of Hoving- ham, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and the following shoemakers' tools, & c., stolen there- from : eight Awls, a pair of Pincers, ten Finishing Irons, a pair of Quarter Boot Legs, a pair of Shoe Tops ready for bottoming, three Balls of Thread. Information to be given to Inspector Walmsley, North Riding Constabulary, Malton.— Bow- street, Auqust 12. Between 12 at noon on the 5th instant and 5 p. m. on the 6th, a small unoccupied cottage in a field at Kinacote was entered, by means of breaking the window, and the following property stolen, therefrom, belonging Mr. John Wormleighton: a^ double- barrelled Gun, with silver- wire twisted barrels, and . bright maple stock, on the locks the maker's name. Sanders, Loughborough ; a Pouch for Shot; a Powder Flask; a few Caps, some Wadding, a Drinking Glass, and three dead Rabbits. Supposed by a Tramp. Information to be given to Mr. John Deakins, Superintendent of Police, Lutterworth, Leicestershire. — Bow- street, August 10. On the night of tbe 7th or early on the morning of the 8th instant, the warehouse of Messrs. Spittle Brothers, gun- lock manufactory, situated in Albert- street, Wednesbury, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen there- from : about 400 Gun Locks, 300 Sights, and 56 bar- steel detanted Locks, with large stucks to seers. Whoever will give such information to Inspector Holland, Police Station, Wednes- bury, Staffordshire, as shall lead to tbe conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 5 reward.— Bow- street, August 10. Between the hours 11 p. m. on the 7th and 6 a. m. on the 8th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Thomas Henry Williams, of Aire- street, Castleford, ironmonger, & c., was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom :— 20 gold plated Brooches, chiefly set in imitation of topaz. 2 silver ditto one set with Scotch pebble. 4 pairs of gold Earrings. 1 pair of gold Spectacles. 5 pairs of gold plated Earrings. 5 gold Alberts. 1 hair Bracelet, gold mounted. 6 silver Thimbles. 11 pairs of mourning Earrings ( 3 pairs jet, 8 imitation).' 1 set of gold plated Sleeve Links. 6 dozen nickel silver Table Spoons, No. 2. 6 albata plated ditto. 2 dozen nickel silver Tea Spoons, No. 1. 2 pairs ditto Sugar Tongs. 5 nickel silver Watch Guards. 4 German silver Alberts. 6 dozen Pocket Knives, consisting of twelve sailor's Knives, with buffalo hafts ; twelve snail, sized Pen- knives, with two blades, ivory hafts and German silver mounted ; twelve ditto with stag bafts ; twelve small sized, single bladed, with white hafts ; twelve large sized, with wood hafts ; twelve large . sized, with two blades, and stag hafts. 11 dozen Brittania metal Table Spoons. 2 pairs alluminum Clasps. 3 ditto steel ditto. 1 ditto pearl ditto. 2 pairs of black Bracelets, imitation jet. 6 leather Purses. 4 gilt Alberts, imitation half- guinea attached. 1 Lady's Companion, in morocco case. £ 2 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property, on application to Mr. T. H. Williams, ironmonger, Castleford. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Hall, West Riding Consta. bulary, Pontefract, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, August 10. On the night of the 4th or morning of the 5th instant, the house of the Rev. Mr. Stockdale, the vicarage, Baslow, was burglariously entered, by forcing up the cellar grating, but the offender or offenders were interrupted and made their escaps. Also, during the same night, the house of Mr. John White, the ' Devonshire Arms' inn, Baslow, was likewise burglariously entered by breaking a square of the bar window of the said inn and unfastening the same, and stole therefrom the Plate- basket, containing ten silver Table Spoons, one marked ' R. F.'; eighteen plated Spoons; eighteen plated Forks, six of them marked with a ' W.' ; a large Fork ; eleven plated Table Forks, one marked ' W.' ; twelve plated Tea Spoons; a plated Fish Knife and Fork, in Cases ; a pair of silver Spectacles, the glass out of one sight ; and about half- a- box of Cigars. Any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall be rewarded. Information to be given at tbe County Police Station, Derby ; at any of the Dis- tridt Police Stations ; or to W. T. Rust, Superintendent Con- stabulary Office, Bakewell.— Bow- street, August 10 On the 4th instant, between the hours of 10 and 12 a. m., the dwelling- house of David Gorruge, at Copshorn, Worth, Sussex, was broken and entered, and a nearly new corded Jacket, and a nearly new dark plaid woollen Dress; the property of James Harris, a lodger, stolen therefrom : supposed by a man about 35 years of age, 5 feet G inches high, light complexion and hair ; dressed in a dark velveteen jacket, light cord trousers, and black billycock hat; was traced to Smallfield, Surrey, in company with three other men, sup- posed to be tramps. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Kennard, Police Station, East Grinstead, Sussex.— Bow- street, August 10. Stolen, between midnight and 6' 30 a. m., the 5th instant, from Bloomfield- house, Egremont- place, Brighton, by means of housebreaking, the property of Mr. Buchanan : 1 large silver Castor, in the shape of a boat, with seven cruets. 1 silver Table Spoon, marked ' W. Infor- mation to be given to the Chief Constable, Town Hall, [ Brighton,— Bow- street, August 7. 2 " P O L I C E G A Z E T T E. August 7. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Supposed to have been stolen since the 3rd instant, from Lowestoft. Denes, a light, grey Mare, aged, 14 or 15 bands high, black gall marks on shoulders, broken knees, and switch tail. Information to be given to the Police at Lowestoft, Suffolk.— Bow- st., August 12. On the night of the 3rd instant, a gimmer hog Sheep was slaughtered in a field on Grindon Farm, Norham, Northumber- land, the skin was stolen, and the carcass left in an adjoining field. The skin marked ' B' on the near hip ; the properly of E. Black, Esq., Grindon. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Marshall, Lowick, Northumberland. — Bow- street, August 12. Supposed to have been stolen on the 27th ultimo, from a field at Knackersnowle, near Plymouth, a bay gelding Pony, 5 years old, about 12£ hands high, bang tail, knees blemished, * W ' branded on the back under the saddle place, and is a fast trotter. A reward of 10s. will be paid on his recovery, by Hammett & Co., Butchers, Plymouth Market, to whom infor- mation is to be given.— Bow- street, August 12. Supposed to have been stolen from Lindfield, Sussex, during the night, of the 5th instant, the property of Mr. John Jones, licensed hawker, of Withyham, Sussex, a light brown Mare, aged, about 14 or 15 hands high, hind feet white, a little white on one fore foot, white star on forehead, grey over the eyes, large belly, and long switch tail. Information to be given at the Chief Constables Office, Lewes ; Superintendent J. Akehurst, Cuckfield ; P. C. J. Churchfield, Lindfield ; or any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, August 12. Supposed to have been stolen, from a lane in the parish of Monyash, Derbyshire, the property of Mr. James Critchlow, butcher, Monyash, on the night of the 3rd instant, a brown mare Pony, about 14£ hands high, with a white star on the forehead, a. small lump with hair rubbed off on the back, and switch tail. All reasonable expenses will be paid on recovery of the same, and if stolen, any one giving information that will lead to the conviction of the thief or thieves, shall receive. -£' 1 reward. Information to be given to Mr. James Critchlow ; or to Mr. W. T. Rust, Superintendent of Police, Bakewell, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, August 10. Stolen recently from Cleeve Hill, a bay Horse, about 5 years old, 15 or 16 hands high, has a white mark down the face, a white hind foot, and a white mark round one of his fore feet, the property of Mr. Charles Newman, of Woodman- cote. Information to be given to Mr. Charles Coleman, Super- intendent, Cheltenham.— Bow- street, August 10. Found at Oulton Cross, Stone, supposed to have been stolen on or about the 23rd ultimo, a Stirk of the following description, viz. : red colour, short horns, marked with white about the belly, small white spot on forehead and rump, and very much spotted about the hind legs. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Keith, Stone, Staffordshire.—• . Bow- street, August 10. On the 1st instant, a lad left a heavy Cart Horse at an inn in High Wycombe, with a spotted Shawl and some Eggs in a basket, stating that it was tor a Mr. Stevens, living in the neighbourhood, application has been made to Mr. Stevens who denies all knowledge of the horse, and it is supposed to have been stolen. It is an iron- grey horse, with saddle marks on each side, star on the forehead, black mane, and long tail, about 16J hands high, black legs. Information to be given to Mr. George Davis, Superintendent, High Wycombe.— Bow- street, August 7. Description of HENRY BATE, a grocer's assistant, late of Stourbridge, Worcestershire, charged with stealing a Horse and Trap on the 1st instant : 31 or 32 years of age, about 5 ft. 1 or 2 inches high, thin appearance, pale complexion, light, hair, very small whiskers and moustache, short sighted, and generally wears spectacles ; dressed in black frock coat, grey trousers, and blue scarf fastened with a ring. Information to he given to Captain Segrave, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension. — Bow- street, August 7. Supposed to have been stolen, during the night of the 30th ultimo, from a field at Begbrooke, Oxon, the property of Mr. James Walker, a half- bred ewe Lamb, supposed to have a hole punched through the left ear. Information to be given to Inspector Coates, Woodstock, Oxon.— Boio- street, August 7. LARCENY AND EMBREZZLEMENT Absconded from the borough of Walsall, on the 8th inst., a shoemaker, charged with stealing four pairs of new Boots, with spring sides. He is 35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light complexion, sandy- coloured whiskers, shabbily dressed, and bald upon the top part of his head ; he has been a soldier, and supposed to be a tramp. Information to be given to Mr. J. W. Cater, Chief Superintendent of Police, Walsall, Stafford- shire.— Bow- street, August 12. Absconded on the 8th instant, stealing £ 63 5s. in Notes and Gold, viz.: four £ 5 Bank of England Notes, Nos. 91675, 91676, 93961, 93962, dated 28th May, 1863, and two £ 20 ditto, Nos. 52437 and 52438. WILLIAM GERRETT, clerk, 13, Vincent- street, River- street, Islington, 25 to 30 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, long dark hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion, a deep scar across forehead and left cheek, scorbutic, long thin face, high cheekbones, is in the habit of biting his finger nails, is a native of Glasgow, speaks quickly, and with a Scotch accent; dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Inspector Knight, Moor- lane Station, City, E. C.— Bow- street, August 12. Absconded, 28th ult., from the Naval and Military Club, 18, Clifford- street, Bond- street, stealing two Cheques, one for £ 12 6s., the other for £ 6 6s., the property of Capt. Handheld and others, his masters. The secretary, 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 in. high, with pale complexion, dark hair, small whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes, of respectable appearance. — Metropolitan Police, C Division, August 12. Absconded, 29th ultimo, from 8, Edward- terrace, Camden- road, Holloway, stealing a Cheque for £ 5 on the London and Provincial Bank, the property ot Mr. Aloff: a youth, 20 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fair complexion, fresh colour, lump on right side of neck ; dress, brown shooting coat, black trousers, vest, handkerchief, and cap.— Metropolitan Police, N Division, August 10. Stolen, since the 2nd instant, from No. 12, Botten- row, Richmond, the property of Henry Bailey, £ 2 8s.; a silver Albert Chain ; a steel Albert Chain ; a gold finger Ring ; and a scarf Ring. By a youth, 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fair complexion, light hair; dressed in brown jacket, brown mixture trousers, and dark cloth cap.— Metropolitan Police, V Division, August 10. Stolen, 4th instant, from 3, Union- place, Orchard- street, Westminster, the property of Mrs. Wilson : a Chemise, a pair of Drawers, two white Petticoats, a merino Skirt, a red Jacket, a black Shawl, a black Cape, a green silk Umbrella, a while straw Hat with black and red feather ( trimmed with green ribbon), and 1s. 6d. By a female, 20 years of age, short and stout, fair complexion ; supposed dressed in the stolen clothes. — Metropolitan Police, B Division, August 10. Absconded, on the 6th instant, from the' Surrey Arms ' public- house, Surrey- square, Old Kent- road, stealing £ 12 10s., the monies of his employer, Jane Fatherly: the potman, 19 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair and complexion ; dressed in brown coat, black cord trousers, and black cloth cap.— Metropolitan Police, P Division, August 10. Description of JAMES DANIEL MARSHEA, charged with stealing six gold Albert Chains, a gold Watch, a Watch- case, and two gold Scarf Pins : about 50 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, very thin grey hair and whiskers meeting under chin, he is a working jeweller, his front teeth are much worn from the use of a blow pipe, has the mark of a strawberry on the crown of head which is bald. Information to be given to Captain Segrave, Chief Constable, Wolverhampton, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, August 10. Absconded, on the 5th instant, from the service of Mr. W Everett, No. 20, Wilson- street, Finsbury, stealing a grey Cob, 14 hands high; a chesnut Mare, 3 years old, 15 hands high, hind fetlock white ; a set of Chaise Harness, silver mounted, much worn; a double set of plated Carriage Harness ; and a Gig, yellow wicker back, on four springs : the ostler, 36 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair and complexion, lame of one leg ; dressed in grey mixture coat, blue slop under, dark cord trousers, leather lace boots, and black cloth cap.— Metropolitan Police, G Division, August 10. Description of a man who absconded from his hail on the 25th ultimo, charged will stealing a pair of Trousers, the pro- perty of Mr. George Thurrell, an innkeeper, of Alde- brough. Found in the possession of a man, named EDWIN JACKSON GILL, who is committed to take his trial at the next March assizes on a charge of burglary at Brecon, a Snuff- box, which is supposed to have beeh stolen, lined inside with silver about one- eighth of an inch thick, 4 inches long and 2^ inches broad, the outside all ivory . excepting the edges of cover and bottom, which are chased round wjth a border of silver: a Box also is found, to contain the same, maroon morocco, cover inside lined with white satin and bottom with green silk velvet, and fastens with a brass snap.
