Willams 0 Baron Daru's bk m Audacieuse, 5 yrs, 1071b W. Bottom 0 Betting : 7 to 2 agst Pergola, 5 to 1 agst Cantonnade, 9 to 1 each agst Banniere, Provocateur, and Mazeppa, 15 to 1 each agst Georgie and Mon Etoiie, 20 to 1 agst Nobility, 25 to 1 agst De- mon, and 30 to 1 agst Miss Margot. After one false start this large field was got off in capital order, excepting Audacieuse, who was left at the post, the lot running in a compact group past the Stands, Georgie, Provocateur, Banniere, and Jean Sans Peur being the first that appeared in front, followed by Mazeppa, Bonne Aventure, Demon, Fille de l'Air, Infante, and Pergola, and then ( lying off) came Nobility, Cantonnade, Victot Pontfol, and Mon Etoiie. When about two thirds of the distance had been completed the front rank began to fall back to the rear division, and then almost immediately Mon Etoiie ( who here leoked very formidable), Cantonnade, Victot Pontfol, and Nobility appeared in the van. Victot Pontfol, however, coming in contact with Banniere, fell, and Mon Etoiie at the same time dropping away beaten, left the race at the distance entirely to Contonnade and Nobility, the two fillies running a tremendous race home, but Mr Carter's representative, finishing a shade the gamest, got the best of it in the very last stride, and won by a heaS, two lengths sepa- rating the pair from Jean Sans Peur, who was a neck only in front of Goliath, who was fourth, Mon Etoiie was fifth. Net value of stakes 19,700f. The above is the most valuable handicap that has ever been run for in France. NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS.— In future all advertisements for this department of Bell's Life in London must reach our office on Thursdays, before four o'clock, or they will not be inserted until the following week. They must not exceed seven lines in length, or they will be charged double, and so on in proportion for every succeeding seven lines. PEDESTRIANISM AT BIRMINGHAM AND DISTRICTS- ASTON CROSS GROUNDS.— Nothing worthy of note has taken place during the last week at these grounds, the alteration making by the proprietors in extending the running ground, is gradually getting towards completition, and when finished will be one of the largest and best pedestrian grounds in this portion of the kingdom. At the above grounds on Saturday evening, Ang 1, at eight o'clock, Deaken of Sutton Coldfleld and Eaves of Minworth toed the scratch to run 125 yards, for £ 5 a side. Although the amount of stake was not large, yet a good deal of interest was taken in the match, the men having previously ran a match of 220 yards at Aston Cross on the 4th of J uly, when Eaves won by two yards. Deaken's friends attributed his defeat to the bad start he got, and another match was made and ran off on the same day, when Deaken got away with a slight lead and won by two yards. Mr A. Roberts, in the absence of Mr Coates, acted as referee. Both men appeared in first- rate trim, Deaken was attended by Genge ( the Miller), his trainer, and George Hartshone, and Eaves by Catlin of Lincoln. A good bit of money was invested at 5 to 4 on Deaken. The men were fully thirty minutes before they got away, when Deaken succeeded in getting off with the lead, gradually increasing the distance, and winning by full three yards and a half. PRINCE OF WALES RUNNING GROUNDS, HOLLOWAY HEAD, BIRMINGHAM.— The 200 yards Novice Handicap, advertised to take place on Monday, Aug 10, will be made into an all- England Handicap, for which Mr A. Deakin will give £ 10 as money prizes. Entries Is each, no acceptances, to be made to Mr A Deakin, Bowling- green, Holloway Head; or to Tom Cooper, Market Hall Tavern, Beil- street, Bull- ring. The handicap to take place on Monday and Tuesday, 24th and 25th of August. Entries to close on 20th of August. Entrance at the gate will be threepence. WAITHMAN AND T. WRISHT.— These well known pedestrians met on Monday, Aug 3, at the above grounds to run 190 yards for £ 15 a side. Three o'clock was the time stated for the men to toe the scratch, but it was nearly five before they made their appear- ance on the mark. Mr Hallam, the final stakeholder, did the needful as referee. The attendance to witness the match was very limited, although it was fully anticipated it would be quite a sporting affair. Both men appeared well. Waithman had the advantage in height over Wright by two inches, and is a well- made wiry young fellow; he was attended by Dodd of Birming- ham. Wright, to our thinking, was a little too fleshy. He was waited on by his brother Charley. There was but little betting; what was done was 3 to 2 on Waithman. The time, 15 minutes, had more than expired before they got off, when Wright bounded away with full a yard start, and a well contested race took place, Wright keeping the lead till within a few yards of the winning post, when Waithman, who had kept close up the whole distance, spurted forward and won by half a yard. HIDE AND PARTRIDGE.— These Birmingham lads have made good their money, £ 5 a side, to the stakeholder, for a 100 yards match, which comes off at the above grounds, on Monday Aug 10. Men to be at scratch at three o'clock. G MOLE OF WALSALL AND J. MEAKEN or CARLTON.— This 150 yards match, Meaken having a start of five yards, for £ 25 a side, is going on. The final deposit for the same is to be made at T. Cooper's, Market Hall Tavern, Bell- street, Birmingham, on Monday, Aug 10. The match comes off at the above grounds on Monday, Aug 17. BULLIVANT OF NOTTINGHAM AND T. BROWN OF BIRMING- HAM.— These men, we understand, are matched to run three laps round the above grounds. Brown having a start of five yards, for £ 10 a side, to come off on Monday, Aug 31. Mr Tailby to be stakeholder and referee. ASH TREE GROUNDS, TIVIDALE.— H. Tudor of Dudley Port and J. Raden of Tividale are matched to run, atthe above grounds, on Aug 31, 120 yards, for £ 5 a side. £ 1 a side is down, and a fur- ther deposit to be made on Saturday ( this) evening, Aug 8, at T. Thomas's, Gate Inn, Tividale. Mr Butler, of Tividale, final stake- holder and referee. T. ROBERTS OF BIRMINGHAM AND SAM BARKER OF LONDON. — The five mile match, for £ 15 a side, Roberts to have a start of a minute and a half, comes off at Aston Cross Grounds, on Monday, Aug 17. £ 12 10s a side is down, and the final deposit must be made on Monday, Aug 10, to Mr Tailby, who is final stakeholder and referee. JONES AND BARRETT.— The quarter of a mile match, for £ 5 a side, between these men is going on. It stands to come off at Aston Cross Grounds en Monday, Aug 17. A further deposit for the same must be made on Monday, Aug 10, to Mr Tailby, who is final stakeholder and referee. G. HARTSHORNE AND MORDIKE.— The quarter of a mile match between these well- known men is progressing, Mordike to have four yards start, for £ 10 a side, and is to come off at Aston Cross Grounds on Aug 24. £ 5 a « ide is down; £ 2 10s a side must be made on Monday, Aug 10, to J. Tailby, the stakeholder and referee. RANDLE OF COLESHILL AND MORDIKE.— This half mile match, Randle receiving five yards, for £ 5 a side, is going on. The match comes off at Aston Cross Grounds on Monday, Aug 17. A further deposit for the match must be made on Monday, Aug 10, to Mr Tailby, who is final stakeholder and referee. SMALLEY OF BIRMINGHAM AND MR LARKE'S MAN.— The 100 miles walking match, for £ 20 a side, for which our Birmingham correspondent held a deposit, is off, Smalley receiving forfeit of the money down, Laycock's backers not agreeing to the match coming off in the Birmingham district. Smalley's backer states that he shall walk Laycock ( Larke's man) 100 miles, within a month from signing articles, and walk him £ 25 to £ 20, and will toss for choice of three grounds in Birmingham. Smalley's money ready at Mr Parry's, Bell Inn, Livery- street, Birmingham. H. GURLEY'S NOVICE OF BENTLB Y HEATH, AND J. BURNS OF SO- LIHULL.— These lads met on Tuesday evening, at seven o'clock, to run a half mile match for £ 5 a side. The match exceed the greatest interest in the villages of Knowle and Solihull, ten miles from Birmingham, and there was an immense assemblage from those places present. The lads ran the same distance about five weeks back for a small sum; Burns'sfriends not being satisfiedat his defeat, the present match was made, and our Birmingham correspondent was mutually chosen to act as referee. The ground selected was on a fair turnpike road, under the beautiful avenue of trees that oover the road for three quarters of a mile. Both lads were in fine condition, the novice having trained under H. Gurley, and Burns under G. Stevens, of Birmingham. The betting commenced at even money, and finished at 6 to 4 on the novice. Mr J. Beasley was appointed starter, and at a quarter before eight o'clock, at the snap of the pistol, they got away well together, in which form they ran for half the distance, when Burns got to the front, but only for a few yards, for the novice was quickly alongside of him. At three quarters distance Burns began to show signs of distress, and after struggling on a few yards further he gave in dead beat. The novice kept gamely at his work, and finished an easy winner. Time, 2min 18sec. Mr Wall, of the Malt Shovel Inn, Solihull, paid over the stakes the same evening. The whole distance was well kept, and the winner was loudly cheered at coming in. Ben Garington will run Deaken of Sutton a quarter of a mile round Aston Cross Grounds, or 120 yards level, for £ 5 or £ 10 a side ; or will run H. Brown 100 yards, or will take one yard in six score, or will run T. Newbold 100 yards with three yards start, for £ 10 a side. Garington will be at Spratt's, Britannia Inn, Lancaster- street, on Wednesday, Aug 12, prepared to make a match with either one. Young Mills of Aston will take five yards start in one mile of De Grass, for £ 10 a side ; or will run Deaken of Sutton half a mile level, or will give 10 yards in one mile, for the like sum. Money ready at H. Moore's, the Queen's Arms, Aston- road. Deaken of Sutton hearing that Morris of Erdington is anxious for a match will run him from 100 to 300 yards, or he will take four yards start in 200 yards of B. Garrington of Birmingham, for £ 5 or £ 10 a side. Money ready any time at the Beggar's Bush, Oscott. ASTON CROSS GROUNDS.— Mr Clulee of the above grounds will give £ 20 to be run for in an All England Handicap race, distance five miles, to come off on Monday, Aug 31. All entries of Is each must be paid to Mr Clulee as above, on or before Wednesday, Aug 19, and all acceptances of £ 1 each on or before Wednesday, Aug 26. All the acceptance money to go to the second and third man. Any one entering falsely will be disqualified. CITY GROUNDS, MANCHESTER, SATURDAY, AUG 1.— LANG AND SANDERSON.— The announce- ment of another race between those undoubted " clippers,'' W. Lang of Middlesborough, Yorkshire, and J. Sanderson ( alias Treacle) of Whitworth, near Rochdale, caused a large assemblage to muster here this afternoon, the weather being exceedingly fine. Bo recently as the 11th of last month these men ran one mile, for £ 25 a side, upon the same course, when Lang, after a contest un- paralleled for speed, bore away the palm by 10 yards, with com- parative ease. Their engagement to- day was to run two miles, for a similar sum, Mr Holden being stakeholder and referee; and, on account of Lang's previous extraordinary achievements, he had many backers, whilst Sanderson's friends, who well knew that he was very fieet at that distance, firmly adhered to their old favou rite. The betting opened at evens, but shortly afterwards 5 to 4 was laid on Lang; the odds then changed, until 6 to 4 was invested on Sanderson, but prior to start Lang again became the favourite, the betting being 7 to 4 on him. Owing to the fine turn of speed possessed by Lang, and which enables him to permit his opponents to make the running until approaching home, the races in which he pursues these tactics admit of little description. In order to complete the distance of two miles they had to run four laps and 320 yards; and when the pedestrians entered the course, each seemed in excellent condition, Lang having been under the watchful eye of G. Martin, and Sanderson had been prepared by his usual venerable mentor, W. Fish of Royton, near Oldham." On a start being effected, Sanderson soon began to show the way, and before they had proceeded far on the journey he held a lead of three or four yards. Subsequently he went still further in front, bst Lang then slightly increased his pace, and narrowed the gap to about three yards. On- ward they went, at a capital speed, Land permitting San- derssn to hold the premiership for a mile and three quarters, at which point Lang, who had made up leeway, shot past Sanderson, amid loud applause. The Whitworth man, however, appeared determined not to succumb without, at least, one more vigorous effort, and, having set to work in earnest, he again came up to Lang, challenged him, and for about 80 yards a brilliant struggle took place for the lead, botti men being now well nigh exhausted. This excellent effort resulted in favour of the invincible hero of Middlesborough, as, when a little more than 300 yards from home, Lang gradually quitted his able opponent, and cleverly won a capital race by five or six yards. The winner covered the first mile in 4min 27sec, and the entire distance ( two miles) in 9min ll^ sec— the fastest race on record. Lang's victory was deservedly , greeted with hearty cheering, and he was " very much dis- tressed at the finish; whilst Banderson merits every praise for the thorough gameness and perseverance with which he con- tested the event almost frem end to end, for " though ' tis not in mortal to command success," he did his utmost to achieve it. \ [ In our paper of July 26 an error occurred in the time stated to have been occupied by Lang in the mile and a quarter sweepstakes, which came off here on July 18, owing to the word " six'' having been omitted. The time should have appeared five minutes and thirty- six seconds, and not five minutes and thirty seconds, as printed. For this mistake our correspondent is not to blame, the error being a typographical one.] MONDAY, AUG 3.— HEAP AND SCHOFIELD.— W. Heap of Taunton and W. Schofield of Hey wood met here this afternoon to run 280 yards, for £ 25 a side, Mr Holden aoting as referee. The betting was 2 to 1 on Schofleld, who took the lead, was not over- taken, and won easily by nearly half a dozen yards. The winner had been well prepared by G. Darley, of the Pedestrian Tavern, Pendleton, near Manchester. PfiDESTBUSigai.— Articles have been signed on behalf ot S. Albison of Bowlee, near Middleton, and P. Stapleton of Staley- bridge to run one mile, for £ 25 a side, at these grounds, on Sept 5. The first deposit of £ 1 each has been paid to Mr Holden, and £ 4 a side more is to be put down on Aug 10. GREENWOOD AND SCHOFIELD.— E. Greenwood of Manchester and W. Schofield of Heywood are matched to run 200 yards, for £ 25 a side, here, on Aug 29. Mr G. Darley of the' Pedestrian Tavern, Salford, has received £ 1 each on account of this contest. MANOCK AND MILLS.— A match has been made between T. Manock and E. Mills ( respectively of Rochdale) to run 120 yards, for £ 25 a side, at this place, on Sept 19. Mr G. Parkinson of the Three Crowns Inn, Rochdale, now holds £ 10 each, and a similar sum is to be staked on Aug 29. LONGWORTH AND EMERSON.— Mr G. Hardy of the Rising Sun Inn, Swan- street, Manchester, was in possession of the full amount of the stakes (£ 15 a side), for the race of one mile for that sum, between J. Longworth and W. Emerson ( both of Man- chester), which was to come off here, on Aug 8. Mr Hardy had also been appointed referee, and the men were to have been on the mark at five o'clock. WILLCOCK AND BEDDOW.— W. Willcock of Manchester and G. Beddow of London, are matched to run 300 yards, for £ 25 a side, at these grounds, on Sept 12, Mr G. Hardy, of the Rising Sun, Manchester, to be stakeholder and referee. The first deposit of £ 5 each has been paid, and a similar sum was to have been staked on August 8. RABBIT COURSING.— J. Thomas of Hanley, Staffordshire, has matched his bitch Lady against G. Bennett's" Jemmy at rabbits, 11 of 21 courses, 60 yards law, for £ 10 a side, Lady not to exceed 211b nor Jemmy 201b, and the latter to have one given. The con- test is to take place here on Aug 31, and on account of it £ 2 10s each is to be staked in Mr Holden's hands on Aug 11. SHEFFIELD AND NEIGHBOURHOOD. During the past week not a single event worthy of record has taken place— in fact, nothing has taken place here since the late disgraceful proceedings enacted during the last handicap, which were fully described in this paper the week before last. We may also here, and we thmk not out of place, state that, if, when a party has been at the expense of training, & c, a man, and that man it is proved is stolen away at the last moment, who will sup- port him. or the parties interested, in such acts \ We can assure them that they will be very narrowly watched in future. Mr Boothroyd, proprietor of Hyde Park, will give £ 35 to be run for, distance 606 yards, on Monday and Tuesday, Aug 31 and 8ept 1; entrance 2s each, and 4s to accept. Entries to be made at the ground ; Mr J. Darley's, Fargate ; or Mr Pitt's, Bailey- lane, not later than August 12. Disqualification as usual. Entries for Mr H. Phoenix's Great All England 210 Yards Han- dicap Race, to be run at the above ground, on Monday and Tuesday, Aug 24 and 25. First prize £ 20, second £ 3, third £ 2.— G.
