PEDESTRIANISM AT BIRMINGHAM AND DISTRICTS ASTON CBOSS GROUNDS.— On Monday, although the weather was almost too hot for out- door amusements, yet at the above grounds it was cool and comfortable, owing to the shady avenue of trees which runs round the grounds, which afforded a shelter from the sun's hot rays to the great numbers who congregated to witness the under- mentioned matches. Soon after three o'clock Thome of Birmingham and Hemmings ( the Salop Lad) made their appearance to run six score yards, for £ 10 a side ( both men have run previously together a match of six score, Thome winning). Both men are well made, active, and young, and were brought to scratch in fine condition. Thorne had trained under Ben Garrington, and Hemmings under T. Newbold. Our correspondent was selected as referee ; the betting 5 to 4 and even money on Thorne; at the first quotation a good deal of money was invested. After several attempts the men got away with an even start. A well- contested race ensued ; the men ran close to- gether till within a few yards of home, when Thorne spurted for- ward, and lauded himself a winner by half a yard. A one mile match was the next event, between W. Brown and T. Porter, two privates of the Scotch Greys ( now quartered in Birmingham), Brown having a start of 20 yards, for £ 5 a side. A good deal ef interest appeared to be taken in the match, both by military and civilians. Brown is a well- made, active young fel- low. Porter is his senior in years. Brown was made the favourite at 5 to 4. Our correspondent doing the needful as referee, at the signal Brown went away at a good pace, with the best of the start, and in passing the referee at the first lap round ( eight laps for the mile) had gained considerably on Porter, who ran at a steady pace, and at the third lap he had gained slightly, and it was con- sidered he was reserving himself for the final lap round. Brown ran in good style, and gradually gained yard by yard, and Porter, seeing he had no chance, gave in at the seventh lap round, Brown winning easily. Time, 5inin 43sec. T. BROWN AND T. ROBERTS — As soon as the ground was cleared af er the above race the public were again admitted to witness the race of 1,000 yards round the grounds, for £ 10 a side. The match between these well- known Birmingham men had been looked forward to with interest, both men having repeatedly been before the public in long and short distances. Mr Tailby, the stake- holder, did the needful as referee. Brown was in fine condition ; he was waited upon by his brother Harry, but trained himself. Roberts had trained under G. Hartsliorne, and laoked well, but complained to our correspondent that he had hurt his right ankle a few days previous in running a trial. After dodging for fully 15 minutes for the start they got off, Roberts with the start of three yards, and at the finish of the second lap round ( four laps and a distance round for the 1,000 yards) was considerably in ad- vance. At passing the referee at the third lap Brown had collared his man, and had the lead by fully five yards ( the betting, which commenced at even, was now done at 2 and 3 to 1 on Brown), and gradually increased the distance, and Roberts, seeing that he had no chance, after running three laps and a quarter round, gave in, Brown finishing at his ease. COLEMAN ( THE VETERAN) AND 8. MALI, EY OF BIRMINGHAM.— At six o'clock these men, who have been repeatedly matched at various distances, made theirappearar. ee to walk six miles, for £ 5 a side, Mr Coates, the stakeholder, doing the needful as referee. Coleman who was attended by G. Hartshone, and Stnalley, waited upon by Butcher, looked in good trim for the event. At the signal the men got away, walking close together for the first two miles, Coleman leading, when at the turn for the third mile Sinalley got the lead, which he maintained ( the Veteran creeping lap after lap close up) till the straight piece near home, when Coleman beautifully spurted forward, and went in a winner, after a close and well- contested match, by half a yard. Time, 58min 32sec. ASH TREE GROUNDS, TIVIDALE.— These grounds were again on Monday, July 13, well attended, to witness the match between C. Clifton of Oldbury and Phillpots of the same place, who made their appearance to run their 100yards match, for £ 5 aside, Clif- ton receiving two yards shirt. Both men have made their appear- ance at the grounds in previous matches. Mr Jones of Oldbury, the stakeholder, acted as referee. Clifton is a well- made and active young fellow, and was trained by Gainboth of Oldbury, and Phillpots had been looked after by B. Aston of the same place; and they brought their men to the ground in first- rate con- dition. The betting commenced on Clifton at 6 to 4 ( few takers). At three o'clock the men got to scratch, and it was full 15 minutes before they got away together at a good pace. At half- way Clifton had" got the lead by half a yard; a close, severe, and well- contested race home took place, Clifton winning by a foot. As is usual in such close running, the other party claimed a win, others a dead heat; but the referee abided by the decision he had given, and bets were paid over on the ground. C. NEWEY AND 8. DOVEY.— These men ( both of Dudley) have made their money, £ 5 a side, good to tin stakeholder, for their 100 yards match, which stands to come off at the above grounds on Monday, July 20; the men to toe the mark at two o'clock. SATURDAY, JULY 11.— QUICK RUNNING.— LANG AND SAN- DERSON.— The announcement of a race between a couple of pedes- trians so renowned as W. Lang ( alias Crowcatcher) of Middlesbo- rough and J. Sanderson ( alias Treacle) of Whit- worth, near Roch- dale, attracted some attention among the lovers of the pastime in the neighbourhood of Manchester, but the result surpassed expec- tation. The above men having been matched to contest the dis- tance of one mile, for £ 25 a side, to- day was fixed for the decision of the event, and the company who assembled to witness it was, of course, much more numerous than usual— probably about 1,000 persons being present. Lang's fame has not been gained alone in the provinces, his metropolitan achievements hav- ing materially tended to raise him to the pinnacle of his profession, and when he entered the course to day he appeared the beau ideal of a pedesti ian. The performances of Sanderson have also been of a high class, his victories at Stockport, and sub- sequently at Hyde Park, Sheffield, being still fresh in the recol- lection of those who take an interest in foot racing. As on pre- vious occasions, he had entrusted his preparation for this match to his venerable trainer, W. Fish, of Royt- on, near Oldham, who brought him to the scratch in excellent condition; Lang having been attended to by his backer, G. Martin, of London. We have so frequently had occasion to record the victories and defeats of each of the men, that it is unnecessary to repeat them here, but we may state that Lang's success to- day proved him to be the most ex- traordinary man of the present age at the distance of one mile, he having accomplished it in the shortest time ever previously known. The race itself, however, from the way in which it was run and won, admits of only a brief description. To complete the distance the men had to traverse two revolutions and 160 yards. After some wagers had been made at evens Lang became the favourite, the betting at start being 6 to 4 on him; and Mr Holden ( the stakeholder) filled the office of referee. About an hour after the appointed time ( five o'clock) the pedestrians ap- peared at the mark, when, oa a start taking place, Sanderson soon began to make the running at a quick pace, and, after a short distance had been covered, he was three or four yards ahead of his formidable opponent. This order was maintained until arriving within 300 yards from the goal, where Lang improved his pace. He then soon closed the narrow gap, and on coming along the last bend of the course he headed Sanderson without much difficulty, sweeping along in splendid style. The race was then virtually at an end, as Lang continued to gain ground, and he passed the tape an easy victor by nearly 10 yards. The winner ran the distance ( one mile) in four minutes, twenty- one and three quarter seconds, and he was warmly applauded and justly com- plimented on his extraordinary performance. This event is the more suprising on account of the heat of the weather, as well as the ease with which the feat was carried off; for had Lang been more closely pressed towards the finish, there is little doubt but that he would have accomplished it in a second less time at least. EARNSHAW AND WILLIAMSON.— These men have now deposited £ 10 each in the hands of Mr Holden, for their race of 120 yards, for £ 15 a side, which is to be decided here on July 25. The final deposit was to have been staked on July 18, and the men are to be on the mark at five o'clock. SCHOFIELD AND HEAP.— W. Schofield of Heywood and W. Heap of Taunton are matched to run 280 yards, for £ 25 a side, at these grounds, on August 3. £ 10 each has been handed to Mr Holden, who is to be referee, and £ 5 a side more is to be put down on July 20. LANG AND SANDERSON.— For the race of two miles, for £ 25 a side, between these men, to come off here on August 1, Mr Ho'. den has received £ 20 each, and the final deposit is to be paid on July 25. Mr Holden is in possession of £ 5 each, and the race is fixed for five o'clock. gling until the completion of the 21st mile, which he accomplished in 4h 14. iiin, he gave up dead beat. COPENHAGEN GROUNDS, MANCHESTER. SATURDAY, JULY 11.— FITTON AND KENT.— About 500 per- sons assembled at the above grounds to- day, for the purpose of witnessing a race of 10 miles, for £ 10 a side, between J. Fitton of Middleton and J. Kent of Tonge- lane, near that town, Mr Hayes being stakeholder and referee. To run that lengthened distance in such oppressive weather was, of course, a task of no ordinary character, especially as neither of the men had, prior to this match, engaged himself to travel so far, and hence the contest excited much interest amongst those present. In order to com- plete the distance the pedestrians hid to traverse 30 laps, less 540 yards, and the betting was 7 to 4 on Fitton at starting. Kent won the toss for sides, and a few minutes before seven o'clock they left the mark, Kent taking the lead at a slow pace, and in this order the first two laps of the ground were completed, when Fitton went to the front, and made the running for a similar dis- tance. Kent then again proceeded to the fore, and kept that position until arriving at the end of tlie ninth lap. The pedes- trians then alternately led up to the 16th revolution, on tlie com- pletion of which they were abreast, and on going along the back stretch of the course in the next round, a splendid struggle took place for the lead, which resulted in Kent once more going in ad- vance. They proceeded in this order during the succeeding half dozen laps ; at the end of the 24th they were side by side, from which point Kent, though closely pursued, was not subsequently headed, and he won a brilliant race, after an excellent sprint, by six j'ards. The men were loudly applauded on nearing home, neither being much distressed, and Kent accomplishing the victory in lh 3min 41sec. Nelly has secured many friends by his late playing; therefore we anticipate seeing a good match between ttiem on Monday, July 20, at the Cardigan Arms, Leeds, the day of playing. Hardy, the proprietor, having announced his intention of giving £ 20 to be played for in a handicap match at knur and spell by the twelve champion players at that game, to be played on two days. This was the first day, when they played 15 rises each. The only absentees were K. Stables and J. Coward. The spectators were very numerous amongst whom a fair amount of money was betted. The betting was chiefly upon the scores sent by individuals, and backing one man against another. The men played in lots, two of three each and one of four. The first lot was J. Hollings, who had 24 scores given; he sent from his stick six tens, seven nines, and two eights^ making a total, including the scores given, of 163. H. SUPPLEMENT TO BELL'S LIFE IN LONDON, JULY 19, 1863. CRICKET. JOINT STOCK COMPANY v QTJIDNONCS. The usual weekly meeting of the company was held at Upton Park on Thursday, July 9. It was more than usually full, owing to its having been generally known before hand that on this day the long- standing dispute between this company and the com- pany of Quidnuncs would be settled. Messrs Bowen and Law first defended the cause of the company, being strenuously op- posed by Messrs Plowden and M'Neile, who were obliged to call in the assistance of Messrs Forster and Usborne before they could silence their adversaries. The hon physician of the company was the most troublesome to the Quids, with the exception of Mr Young, who completely silenced five of them in seven by no means striking bawls. The result of the discussion proved, as • was expected, the great superiority of the joint stock system ; in Tain did Messrs Plowden and Btrutt endeavour to bring about a different decision, and at seven o'clock the poll was declared in favour of theJ. 8. C. A vote of thanks having been passed to Messrs Church, Hoare, & c, for their conduct at the wickets, and a ( subscription having been set on foot to present Mr Young with a new hat, the meeting separated. Falling in at Waterloo, they fell out at Farnborough with some blank- looking flies of cabbies, who charged them right gloriously, and left them to re- form on the Club House Ground. The company of Rappers having mollified most of the protuberances between the wickets, soon after noon the Army emerged from its night lines, and was received by the Quids in column very contiguous to the claret cup tent, from whence a " shower of grape" had thus early begun to fill their flanks. John Henry, of " The Barnacles," A. D. C. to the General, having executed an adroit manoeuvre with a shilling, Quids went in first, but that they were soon cowed by the Hardy Norseman the bull- etin at luncheon sufficiently shows. The Army then advanced, Arkwright's battery, aided by the inequalities of the surface, telling upon them, by the score as may be seen. The struggle was not very prolonged, though Kennedy's force was urell distributed, and the Army retreated with 121 casualties, many of them caused by the random firing of the Quidnunc out- posts. A strategic movement towards the tents led soon after- wards to a brilliant second encounter, in which the Quids, follow- ing their beloved chief's example, covered themselves with glory, and night alone put an end to the struggle, the Quids remaining masters of the ground, Rumours of intended operations on a somewhat larger scale the following day induced the Quids to quit the scene of their would- be triumph by an evening train. Bach side claiming the victory, everybody was pleased, and all bets drawn. Score: QUIDNUNCS. 1st inn 2d inn J. C. Davis, c and b Glyn 0 c Wilkinson, b Olyn 10 John Henry, c and b Hardy 0 S. ANOMALIES v CRANBROOKE PARK. 41 Mount Tabor's the Monarch of Mountains."— Byron. The prophetic mind of the poet clearly referred to the match at Cranbrooke on July 8, when the A. What with getting the runs, praising the ground, eating the strawberries, and execrating the absentees, the A. C. had a hard day's work. Score : ANOMALIES. A. J. Wilkinson, c and b Dobree. 34 J. A. This one- day match was played on the Civil Service ground in Battersea Park on Wednesday, July 8. The Diamonds having won the toss took possession of the wickets, but were disposed of • without. much difficulty for 79 runs. Against this the Civil Ser- vice obtained 161, of which number Mr Rawlins scored 77 ( not out) by some magnificent hitting. In his figures were seven fours, ten threes, four twos, & c. At the conclusion his club pre- sented him with a bat. Mr Malkin also played well for his 29. The Diamonds commenced their second innings with Mr Bate- man and Mr Hume, who quickly began to score, and before they were parted the telegraph showed 133. Mr Hume was then finely caught by Mr Rawlins at long- on. In his innings of 51— the second time he has obtained that number this week on the same ground against the Civil Service— were a seven ( a square leg- hit), four fours, & c. When tin e was called eight wickets had fallen for 197 runs, Mr Bateman carrying out his bat for 98, having been once let off at long- on. In conclusion, one more word in praise of Mr Rawlins, whose batting, bowling, and fielding were first- rate all round, and who seetn3 after an interval of three years to have returned to his old form.
