C. %* Whenever it is desired that any person should be appre- hended, and the Name is given, it is indispensably nccessary that an Information should be made and sworn to before a Magistrate, of the Offence charged, and an attested copy thereof, together with the Advertisement, forwarded to the Editor for insertion. As no charge is made for the insertion of any article in the POLICE GAZETTE, all Letters addressed to the Editor must be prepaid, otherwise the insertion will not be made. ^ It is requested that the Names and Descriptions of Deserters and Absentees from the Militia, as well as those from the regular Arms, intended for insertion in the POLICE GAZETTE, may be addressed to " The Under Secretary of State for War, War Office, Pall Mall, London, S. W-," as they cannot be published without his authority. INFORMATIONS. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. On the night of the 10th instant, some person or persons • wilfully and maliciously set fire to a large rick of Sainfoin Hay, the property of the Rev. James Davies, Braishfield, whereby it was entirely consumed. Whoever shall give such information to the Rev. James Davies, or to Mr. G. W. Hull, Superintendent of Police, Romsey, as will lead to the convic- tion of the offender or offenders shall receive .£ 20 reward.— Bow- street, March 14. On the evening of the 28th ultimo the farm buildings in tht t occupation of Mr. James Doolittle, farmer, of Kingswood, near « dley, Salop, were destroyed by fire, supposed by an i « 5f* i6iiaty. £ 10 reward will be paid by Mr. Doolittle to any , i'son w- fto will give such information as will lead to the pprehensjon and conviction of the offender or offenders. In- formation to be given to Mr. Superintendent McWilliams, Bridgnorth; or to Sergeant Howells, Cleobury Mortimer, Salop.— Bow- street, March 12, FORGERY. Absconded from Tredegar, in the parish of Bedwellty, on the 4th instant, charged with forging an order for 9s. at Sirhowy, on the 3rd instant, with intent to defraud John Crawly, PATRICK KENNEDY, labourer, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stoutly made, fresh complexion, light brown hair and whiskers meeting under the chin, the top of the forefinger of right hand has been cut of, and he generally wears a piece of white rag round it, his lower lip is very thick and sore from playing a fife, and generally dressed in a short white slop or brown sleeved waistcoat, fustian or cord trousers, heavy lace- up boots, and black cap. He is a native of Ireland, and is well known at Dowlais, Aberman, and Cardiff, where he has been working, and will most likely be found in com- pany with Irishmen in some public - house playing a fife. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Usk, or to Superintendent H. Fower, Tredegar, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 26. Description of THOMAS WRIGHT, late schoolmaster and rate collector at Gayton, near Northampton, charged with forgery and embezzlement at the same place, who absconded on the 12th instant: 45 to 50 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, stoutly made, and a little bow- legged, dark hair and whiskers, the latter rather thin, and he has something the matter with one eye; dressed in dark clothes and hat, and sometimes wears a pair of grey trousers with a stripe. In- formation to be given to Superintendent F. Pannett, Tow- cester, Northamptonshire, who holds a warrant for his appre- hension.— Bow- street, March 24. Further information respecting the man calling himself Mr. JERVIS, charged with passing a forged £ 5 Bank of England Note at the shop of Mr. Wyatt, Minster- street, Reading, Berks, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 7th instant and subsequent dates. He was tried in London about eight years ago for uttering forged notes, and sentenced to twenty years' penal servitude, and is now on ticket- of- leave. His real name is WILLIAM MASON, by trade a tailor. Information to be given to Mr. John Peck, Chief Superinten- dent of Police, Reading, Berks, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 19. Absconded on the 25th ultimo, from No. 26, Fore- street, City, charged with forging a cheque for £ 85, on Messrs. Spooner and Attwood's Bank, THOMAS SOUTHBY, 32 years of age ( but looks younger), 5 feet 7 inches high, slightly built, long thin features, thin black hair, no whiskers, very pale complexion, long thin prominent nose, thin fingers, peculiar hands, very dirty broad nails, of melancholy appear- ance, is very nervous when spoken to, and/ dlas a habit of frequently etching his chin ; dresses slovenly, supposed in black frock • it, and hat, with the name of ' McCarthy, Snow Hill.' C.— — Bow- si, eet, March 14. ROBBERY AND LARCENY FROM THE PERSON. Stolen about 11 p. m. on the 20th instant, from the person of a gentleman in the borough of Northampton, an open face gold Geneva Watch, gold dial, Nos. 16888 and 19822. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Henry Keenan, Chief of Police, Northampton.— Bow- street, March 26. Stolen from the person of a man, at a brothel in the borough of Oldham, a patent lever Watch, No. 3560, a steel Chain and common Key attached. Information to be given to Mr. Wetherell, County Constabulary, Oldham.— Bow- street, March 26. Supposed to have been stolen from the person during the Wharfedale Steeplechases, at Otley, Yorkshire, on the 19th instant, a silver lever Watch, cream- coloured face, minute hand, small piece broken off the large hand, No. 4048. Infor- mation to be given to Mr. Superintendent Smith, West Riding Constabulary, Otley, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen from the person of a lady in Liverpool, on the 19th instant, a Cheque for £ 81 9s., drawn on Messrs. Glyn, Mills, and Co. in favour of Pagan, Willan, and Co., or order, by Morrison, Dillon, and Co.; endorsed on the back payable to Martha Anderson, or order, and blank endorsed by her. Infor- mation to be given to the Inspector, Central Police Office, Liverpool.— Bow- street, March 24. Further particulars respecting the watch stolen from a gentleman at Bangor steeple- chase on the 14th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 19th instant. It is a silver lever watch, capped and jewelled in four holes, maker J. Tozer, Whitchurch, No. 8560^ ( and not 8270, as previously stated). Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Haines, Whitchurch ; or to Inspector Bolton, Hanmer, Flint- shire.— Bow- street, March 24. Further information respecting the silver Watches stolen from the persons of John Downs and Charles Bostock. on the race- course during the steeple chases at Bangor, Flintshire, on the 14th instant, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 17th : the No. on Downs's watch is 37055, and on Bostock's 2568, maker Cameron, Liverpool. Information to be given to Inspector Bolton, Hanmer, Flintshire.— Bow- street, March 24. Stolen about 10- 30 p. m. on the loth instant, from the person of Mr. Blair, of No. 24, Clarges- street, Piccadilly, while passing through Sutton- street, Soho : a silver Watch, engine- turned, gold hinges, maker Moulieure, Geneva. By three men. — Metropolitan Police, C Division, March 21. BURGLARY AND HOUSE BREAKING. On the night of the 21st instant the dwelling house of Thomas Bolton, in the parish of Shelley, Suffolk, was bur- glariously broken into, and the following articles stolen therefrom : five calico Sheets; seven calico Chemises ; five calico Shirts, one marked across the shoulder with trade mark ; a drab Scarf Shawl ; a black Scarf Shawl, red and green flowers, deep coloured border, with a piece of green merino sewn on at the edge ; a Shirt of brown stuff dress ; a Skirt of drab Dress ; half a- dozen black handled Knives and Forks; 1J lb. of Fork ; six Eggs ; fib. of black Tea; 2 lbs. of loaf Sugar ; 1 lb. of powder ditto ; 1| lb. of Raisins; 2 lbs. of Currants; - i lb. of Tobacco; a Pocketbook containing old writing ; and 3s. 6d. in silver. Information to be given to P. C. Thomas Brooks, Raydon, near Hadleigh, Suffolk.— Bow- street, March 26. On the night of the 23rd instant, the house of William Smith, carpenter, of Grimston, was broken into, and the follow- ing property stolen : a blue pilot Coat, large black buttons, two pockets on the right side, and two on the left breast, one inside, and one outside; a pair of doeskin driving Gloves, double on the thumb and three fingers ; a large cashmere neck Wrapper, striped red, yellow and blue; a Loaf of Bread; about £ lb. of Cheese ; and 2 ozs. of Tobacco, done up in white paper. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Rose, Dorkina:; or to Inspector Wilson, Grimston, near King's Lynn, Norfolk. — Bow- street, March 26, Stolen, at 10 a. m. on the 24th instant, from the house of George Hare, Stobswood, the following property, viz. : a black Shooting Jacket, with two pockets outside laps, one outside left breast, and dark bone buttons; Vest to match, new; a black Frock Coat, two pockets outside, and one outside left breast, half sleeved with new cloth ; a double- breasted Vests, with yellow buttons ; a pair of dark grey Trousers ; a pair of ditto, small check, bound with black calico ; a black Cap with cloth peak ; a Glengarry Cap; a pair of Stockings, out at heel; a pair of half worn lace Boots, with brass eyelet holes; and 3£ d. in Coppers. By a man about 25 or 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, with dark complexion, is slightly pockpitted, and was dressed in dark clothes. Information to be given to Major Browne, Chief Constable, Alnwick; or to Mr. Superin- tendent Cocks, Morpeth.— Bow- street, March 26, During the night of the 20th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. J. Purbridge, of the Level, in the parish of Dudley, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen there- from : 1 flitch of Bacon; 1 pair of Cheeks. 30 bottles of Wine, rhubarb, cowslip, black currant, and elder ; the rhubarb has the letter ' R.' on the corks, and the cowslip ' C.' in black ink. lib. of Currants. 31bs. of Candles. 31bs. of Cheese, 21bs. of Butter. 6lbs. of moist Sugar, 1 Jibs, of Tea in a black tin caddy. 1 pint of Rum, £ pint of Brandy. 1 currant Cake. A number of Eggs in a tin basket. 1 pair of women's Slippers, leather, new. 2 pairs of worsted Stockings, knitted, new ; 1 Chemise. 1 coarse Towel. 2 wicker Baskets. ( Entrance was effected by taking out a pane of glass from the pantry window, and forcing out the bars. Information to be given to Mr. Chief Superintendent Burton, Dudley, Worcester- shire.— Bow- street, March 26. JACOB WILLIS, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 24th instant, charged with housebreaking at Corfe Mullen, Dorset, has been apprehended.— Bow- street, March 26. On the morning of the 24th instant, between the hours of 1 and 6, the house of Messrs. J. and H. Walter, of Broad- st., Worcester, was burglariously entered, and a large quantity of valuable property stolen therefrom, consisting of ladies and gentlemen's gold and silver Watches, gold Neck Chains, gold and Albert Guards, ladies and gentlemen's diamond, fancy, and signet Rings, also about £ 40 in Gold, Silver, and Copper. Who- ever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, or the recovery of the property ( a great portion of which can be identified), shall receive £ 50 reward, or a proportionate reward will be given for the recovery of any part of the property, on application to Mr. Power, Superintendent of Police, Worcester.— Bow- street, March 26. Between 11 p. m. on the 20th and 5 a. m. on the 21st instant the dwelling- house of Mr. William Abel, farmer, of Gateforth, Yorkshire, was broken and entered, and the fol- lowing property stolen therefrom: 6 Tea Spoons, 1 pair of Sugar Tongs, 1 Sugar Basin, all silver and marked ' J. C.' 1 silver Bracelet, curb chain pattern. 1 silver Brooch in the shape of a dove. 2 gold Watch Keys, in the shape of pencil cases, one marked ' J. B.' 1 gold Mourning Ring,' In memory of Robert Matterson.' 1 gold Brooch set with coral. 1 gilt Brooch with yellow stone. 1 pebble Bracelet set in sillver. 2 hair Rings with gold clasp, marked ' J. C.' 1 Portemonnaie, containing 14s. in silver, Is. 6d. in copper, and 24 postage stamps. 1 black and white woollen Scarf Shawl. 1 light coloured cashmere ditto, pine apple pattern. 1 dark mixture cloth Overcoat with two outside pockets and one inside left breast. Supposed by two men of the following description, who had permission to sleep in the barn and were gone in the morning : one, about 45 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, prominent nose, dark curly hair parted behind ; dressed in a brown cloth coat, dark trousers, and cap : the other, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout made, light hair and whiskers; dressed in a brown cloth coat, woollen cord trousers, and black billycock hat. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent G. Lottey, West Riding Constabulary, Selby, Yorkshire.— Bow- street, March 24r Between the hours of 2 and 3 a. m. on the morning of 5th instant, the dwelling house of Mr. Thomas Thornhill, farmer, Crewe, near Nantwich, was burglariously entered, by a ladder being placed against the house side, close to Mr. Thornliill's bed- room window, and taking out a pare of glass, and un- fastening the catch. Mr. Thornhill was awoke by a man drawing the looking- glass through the window, and imme- diately got up and shot at the man through the window ; he must have been badly wounded, as a quantity of blood was on the ladder, and could be traced a considerable distance in the direction of Haslington. Information to be given to Superin- tendent Laxton, Nantwich, or to Serjeant Wilson, Police Station, Crewe.— Bow- street, March 24. During the night of the 21st instant, the dwelling house of John Earnshaw, farmer, of Breightmet, was broken and entered, and two parcels, each containing Five Shillings in Copper Money, tied up in a piece of old newspaper; a Half- crown in Silver, and Two Shillings in loose Coppers stolen therefrom. Information to be given to Mr. John R. Scott, Superintendent of Police, Town Hall, Little Bolton, Lancashire.— Bow- street, March 24. On the night of the 19th instant, between the hours of 9 and 10 p. m., the beer- house of Thomas Hales, of Bromford- lane, in the parish of West Bromwich, in the county of Stafford, was broken and entered, and stolen from a chest of drawers in the bed- room, three £ 5- Notes, six Sovereigns, and two old- fashioned silver Watches ( one has ' T. Hales' written on the inside case, No. 8169, no maker's name; the other, No. 1172, makers' name Vale and Howett). It is probable the watches may be pledged in Birmingham, West Bromwich, Wednes 2 POLICE GAZETTE. March 26. bury, or Walsall, as the suspected parties have been traced to the above mentioned places. A ladder has been left on the premises, about 14 feet long, for which no owner has at present been found, but by the appearance of the ladder, it has been brought from some building in the course of erection. Infor- mation to be given to Major McKnight, Deputy Chief Con- stable, West Bromwich; or to Detective Inspector Samuel Went, Stafford.—- fiow- sfm « , March 24. , » petween 10 p. m. on the 20th and 5- 30 a. m. on the 21st instant, the grocer's shop of Sarah Garlick, of Hooley Hill was broken into, and the following property stolen therefrom: about . 361bs, of Tea, a portion tied up in separate pounds, with ' green tea,'' black tea,' and ' mixed tea' on the paper, which can be identified: a flitch. « ££ aton, cut in two, with one of the pieces mapped in a linen cloth • a piece of Cheese, about 6 or 71bs.; a number of Postage Stanips ; and about 15s. in Silver and Copper. Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Wilshaw, .. near Ashton - un< 3er- Lyne. — Bow - street, March 24. * t Stolen on the loth instant, between 9 a. m. and 10' 30 a. m. from Mr. Robert Kirtley, of Annandale, in the parish of Lan- to nine cotton Handkerchiefs, red and white ; about 30 yards of unbleached calico, about £ wide ; and a gentleman's dark cloth Inverness Cape, with pockets outside, and one inside of left breast. Three men were seen about 6 o'clock the same morning crossing the Rhondda Vach river, near Ynis- hir, two of them earned large bundles: one man is about 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, and dressed in a cape answering the description of the one stolen, black bowler hat, and old boots much worn ; another is about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, and dressed in a black cloth frock coat, dark trousers, and black cloth cap ; the other is about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, and dressed in a dark cloth jacket, light cord trousers, which appeared to have been recently washed, aud black cloth cap. The footmarks of During the night of the 19th instant, the dwelling- houses ! two persons were found on the premises, one of them being of Mr. John Parkin, farmer, of Burghwallis, and Mr. John ; that of a smart made boot, small size 9J inches in length, the Rowley, farmer, of Norton Priory, near Pontefract, were other larger. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent burglariously entered, and the following articles stolen there- McWilliam, Bridgnorth ; or to Sergeant Howells, County Supposed to have been stolen from a- field at Wichbold, in thei parish of Dodderhill, on the night of the 20th instant, a brown Welsh Cart Horse, about 14} hands high, without shoes, and very active, the property of Mr. Gibbs. Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent J. Bevan, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire*— Bow- street, March 24. Absconded from Elm, Isle of Ely, on the 19th instant, charged with stealing two Horses on the 18th instant, the property of Mr. John Topp, farmer, Elm, FREDERICK TOPP, a farmer, 30 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, rather stout, rather round shouldered, fair complexion, small light whiskers; dressed in a brown mixture cloth coat and vast, white cord trousers, cloth cap with peak, and lace- np Boots. The horses have been recovered. Information to. to given to Captain Foster, Chief Constable, March ; or to Mr. Super- intendent Thomas Stocking, Elm- road, Wisbech, Site of Ely, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, March 21. Found on the 4th instant, in ' She parish of RomsM Kirk,, and supposed to have been stolen, a dark grey mare Pony, 5 years old, about 13J hands high, with a long bushy tail, shod all round, and has the letters ' J. D.' stamped upon the hoof of each fore foot. Information to be given to Superintendent Stelling, North Riding Constabulary, Scorton, Yorkshire; or to Inspector Stokeld, Greta Bridge, Darlington, Durham.— Bow- street, March 21. Supposed to have been stolen from a field at Hither Green, Lewisham, on the 6th instant, the property of Mr. Bryer, three Horses: one iron grey, 16J hands high, long tail ; one a black cob, white mark on off side, long tail, in low condition ; the other a rough bay gelding colt, aged 2 years.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, March 21. Supposed to have been stolen on the 6th instant, from Clay Farm, Beckenham, the property of Mr. Covill, a grey Mare, 15 hands high, aged, and in low condition.— Metropolitan Police, R Division, March 21. 4 silver Tea Spoons, marked ' M. On the night of the 17th instant, the house of Mr. Mason, No. 21, East- street, was entered from the back, and the fol- lowing Plate stolen : a chased silver Pepper Box, about 5 in. high, of old design; a chased silver Mustard Pot and Spoon, of modern make ; four circular silver Salt Cellars, on small feet, two of which are bevelled round the edge, and two plain, marked with the initials ' W. M. M.'; and four Salt Spoons, marked' W. M. M.' There was. also stolen a Ring and three gold Seals on a chased gqld slip Ring. The seals are engraved as follows : the largest, a white cornelian stone, lias a bundle of sticks and the motto ' Friendship in Unity'; one, of red cornelian, has a heart's ease and the motto ' A vous'; the third, a very small one, of white cornelian, with the rose, shamrock, and thistle. The ring of old fashioned form, is set with a jet stone, and has on the outer circle, in black enamel on gold, an inscription to the memory of E. Stolen, from the farm of Mr. Lewis Shepperson, of Galss Moor, Whittlesey, on the night of the 22nd instant, a Nag Mare and Saddle and Bridle; the Mare is of the following description ; 4 years of age, about 15^ hands high, colour bay, with off fore- foot white ( which is turned a little outwards), a long thin body, a bang tail, and has been pinched on off shoulder by the collar ; she has a remarkable shoe on one of her hind feet, which was made out of a screw bolt, the thread of which will be visible till the shoe is worn out. She has been traced in the direction of Biggleswade, ridden by a man of the following description : about 60 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches high, hair and whiskers turning grey, and has a large beard ; dressed in tight- fitting trousers or breeches, and is very straight and smart for a man of his years : he is well known about most parts of England, and once travelled with an entire horse. Escaped from Tutbury Lock- up, Staffordshire, on the morning of the 14th instant, JOSEPH BISHOP, charged with stealing 12 lbs. of Bacon and 3 lbs. of Sugar, the property of William Wilson, at Hanbury: about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, light complexion, high cheekbones, brown hair and whiskers meeting under the chin, grey eyes, and has a very rough deep voice; dressed in a black cloth jacket, light cord trousers and waistcoat, dark cloth cap,, and strong blucher boots. He is a bricklayer, and has worked a great deal on railways. He is well- known in the Staffordshire Potteries, having resided there for ten years previous to his coming to Tutbury, which is about four years since; and is supposed to have been formerly in the army, and a native of Londoner neighbourhood ; he is very much addicted to drinking and frequents low public and beer houses. Description of two men committed to Aylesbury Gaol under the vagrant act: lst, JAMES SPENCER, labourer, of Port Stewart, Monmouthshire, about 24 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, brown hair, whiskers inclined to be sandy, fresh complexion, lost the left arm, scar from a burn on the right shoulder; dressed in a blue monkey jacket, fustian trousers and waistcoat, two short white slops under his jacket, red spotted neckerchief, cloth cap ( with peak), and a strong pair of watertight boots, tipped and nailed. The other, JOHN BENNET, groom, of Stafford, about 20 years of age, 5 feet 5} inches high, fresh complexion, dark- brown hair, no whiskers, right arm withered, bite from a horse on the left arm above the elbow, kick from a horse on both knees; dressed in a plaid jacket, three pockets outside, and white bone buttons, dark cord trousers, tight at the bottoms, check- plaid waistcoat, with round brass buttons, brown scarf, blue plush cap, and strong lace- up boots, a pair of clipping scissors, and a key marked Chubb's patent, was found in his possession when apprehended. Further information respecting the man and woman under remand at Overton, Flintshire, in the names of JOHN and ELIZABETH PAIN, who call themselves man and wife, charged with attempting to pick pockets during the steeple- chase at Bangor, on the 14th and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 17th instant. The man occasionally calls him- self GEORGE WILSON, he has lost the third finger of the right hand, and is committed to gaol for three months, and the woman for one month with hard labour ; they have been identified as having for some time associated with well- known thieves. Description of ELIZABETH SMITHERS, remanded to Horsemonger- lane Gaol, to be brought up at the petty sessions at Epsom, on the 24th instant at 11.30 a. m., charged with passing Counterfeit Coin at Leatherhead, Surrey. She is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark brown hair, fresh complexion, round visage, dark brown eyes; dressed in light cotton dress, old brown mixture shawl with dark stripes round the edges, dark brown woollen scarf with yellow spots, green bonnet trimmed with black lace, a wreath of red and white flowers inside and white border, and wears a black elastic waistbelt with an anchor clasp. She states that she was born at Cranley, Surrey ; that her maiden name was ELIZABETH ETHERINGTON ; previous to last Christmas she was em- ployed by Mr. Godstone at mat- making at Wonersh, and since then has been working at his manufactory in the Borough, and lived at No. 29, Dover- road, Borough, London. She is sup- posed to have committed similar offences elsewhere. Description of a man committed to the House of Correction at Pontefract, on the 25t. li instant, for twenty- eight days, for vagrancy: WILLIAM RIGBY, states that he is a native of London, a coach trimmer, 47 years of age, 5 feet 4i inches high, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, thin whiskers, rather thin face, has a small fish on the right arm, and several indistinct marks on the hack of left hand ; dressed in a drab cloth over- coat with brass buttons, black cloth vest with brass buttons, black cloth trousers with fly fronts, lace- up boots with brass eyelet holes, white woollen comforter, and a military cap ; he has been in the army and appears well- acquainted with prison discipline, and is supposed to have committed offences else- where. Description of a man and woman in custody at Preston, Lancashire, and remanded till the lst proximo, charged with uttering Counterfeit Sovereigns. JAMES DAVIS, 28 years of age, 5 feat 4 inches high, fair hair and complexion, light whiskers and moustache, blue eyes, long prominent nose; dressed in a dark tweed cut- away coat and vest, puce- coloured stripe pattern trousers, inverness cape with velvet collar, plum- coloured scarf fastened with a gold pin, elastic side boots, and fine black hat; has a silver watch and gold albert chain with a small square gold locket with his wife's portrait : he states that he is a tailor, and resided in Duke- street, Chester, and left about a week ago, which is found to be false ; and it has since been ascertained that he resided at No. 91, Bewley- street, Kirkdale, Liverpool. ANNE DAVIS, states that she is the wife of James Davis, about 26 years of age, rather genteel looking, long thin visage, pale face, light hair and complexion, a native of Bromyard ; dressed in a light sealskin mantle with crimson silk turned- up cuffs, dark spotted merino dress, kid boots with strong soles, and second mourning straw bonnet. Two men of the following description were apprehended at Rugeley, Staffordshire, on the 23rd instant, charged with attempting to break into the dwelling- house of Miss Taylor Smith during divine service. One, gives his name CHARLES JACQUES, an American, by trade a gun locksmith, 24 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, rather pale complexion, dark hair, whiskers, and small moustache ; dressed in a rather rough dark inverness cape, dark cloth jacket, and small plaid dark brown cloth trousers and vest : in his possession were found some housebreaking implements and a gold Geneva watch. The other, states that his name is EDWARD SWAN, native of London, by trade a tailor, 25 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair and whiskers ; dressed in a brown overcoat with velvet collar and wide sleeves and closely fitting body, a dark brown cloth frock coat, black cloth trousers and vest; and black Elcho hat. Description of a man remanded to Montgomeryshire Gaol until the 27th instant, charged with stealing a Shirt ( recovered), a calico Chemise, and a cotton Apron, belonging to John Bowen, of Cwmcae, from the drying- ground, during the night of the 14th instant ; also a pair of coarse Sheets, the propetry of Mr. Charles Pryce, of Pentrecoon, in the township of Aston, Montgomeryshire, the sheets were sewn up to make a clover or wool sack, which was filled with clover seed and left in the barn. He is about 33 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, flat visage, pale complexion, common nose, large dark whiskers meeting under the chin, straight brown hair, stout built; dressed in black jim- crow hat, brown velveteen coat and waistcoat, black rough overcoat, torn on one side, moleskin trousers, strong water- tight boots with brass eyelet- holes, and a navvy's check slop for a shirt, he says his name is JOHN THOMAS, a native of Pembroke, which is supposed to be false ; it is supposed that he is a deserter, or that he has been previously convicted, as he appears to be well acquainted with prison and military discipline. Another man was with him at the time of his apprehension, who made his escape, of the fol- lowing description : 32 or 33 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, broad fresh face ; dressed in black cloth cap with peak, red cotton neckerchief tied sailor fashion, a brownish overcoat with pockets outside and rather short for him, a navvy's white slop under it, check, shirt, moleskin trousers, and lace- up boots, the nails of which w ere much worn ; two women were seen with them in a lane 2 or 3 miles from where the robberies were committed, on the same night; the sheets will probably be used as a tent cover, or to sleep in at outbuildings in Shrop- shire or Radnorshire, as the man who made his escape was seen going in the direction of Velindre, after his companion wa captured. Left his home, at Worcester, at 8 p. m. on the 11th instant, a Gentleman, about SO years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, dark hair and bushy whiskers both turning grey, stout built, deep voice ; dressed in a black dress coat, waistcoat, and ribbed trousers. He had with him a cheque for £ 40, drawn payable to his order at the Worcester Old Bank. He had been in a low nervous state for some time past, and it is feared some ill may have befallen him. £ 10 reward will be paid on his recovery. Missing from his home, at Kingstone- place, Barnsley, Yorkshire, since the 4th instant, JOSEPH OGLEY, a man of weak intellect who can give no account of himself, 28 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, dark complexion, black hair, dark eyes, small dark whiskers ; dressed in black velveteen jacket, corduroy trousers, brown waistcoat, red and white woollen comforter, and black cloth cap bound with red lace. He walks erect with his fingers pointing downwards, and saliva is constantly running from his mouth. It is feared that some ill has befallen him, or that he has met with some foul treatment. Description of a man and woman in custody at Gloucester, and remanded, charged with robbery from the person on the night of the 17th instant. WILLIAM JONES, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, very stoutly made, rather corpulent, chubby face, no whiskers, light brown curly hair; dressed in an old suit of black clothes ( the coat has a velvet collar), high crown hat, and balmoral boots. MARY JONES, • states that she is the wife of William Jones, and that they are natives of St. Philip's, Bristol, about 33 years of age, 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, stoutly made, long scar on right side of nose, high cheekbones, light hair, blue eyes, very vacant expression of countenance ; dressed in a shepherd's plaid shawl, black stuff flounced dress, and black and white check straw hat trimmed with velvet. He stated that he came from London, but had been tramping about the country for some time. Stolen about 7 a. m. on the 20th instant, from the ' King's Head' inn, Easthothley, Sussex, the property of the ostler, a pair of light half Boots, with brass lace- holes, patent pelts heel and toe, two rows of sparrow or cutbills nearly all round the soles, four rows of small- headed nails, nearly new, and can be iden- tified. Supposed by a young man who slept with the ostler on the night of the 19th instant, about 18 or 19 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, proportionately made, light com- plexion, light hair, and dressed in light corduroy trousers, round fustian jacket recently washed, and light- coloured cap with peak. He stated that he had been working at East- bourne, supposed as a bricklayer's labourer, and was then making for Tunbridge Wells. It is supposed that he will either sell or pawn the boots, as he had no money, or he may probably wear them himself. Supposed by a man who came to the house to lodge the night previous, and stated that he was a shepherd in the employ of Messrs. Charlesworth's, of Wakefield, colliery owners, and that he was going to stay with Popplewell some weeks, having charge of a number of sheep close by ; he appeared to be well- acquainted with the names of the Charlesworth families; he is 50 years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, and whiskers, thin face, and rather stoutly made; dressed in an old blue pilot overcoat, much faded, with a brown patch on the right shoulder, cord trousers or breeches, brown leather leggings, black soft felt hat which tied with black strings, and lace- up boots ; it is strongly suspected that he has committed similar offences elsewhere.
