POLICE GMETTE CONTAINING The substance of all Informations received in cases of Felony, and of Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of Persons charged with Offences who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses, for the purpose of tracing and recovering them. Description of a man who absconded from Penrith, Cum- berland, on the 21st instant, charged with obtaining £ 4 under false pretences, also with uttering a bill for .£ 25, which has since been ascertained to be a forgery ; he stated that he was traveller for Messrs. Hilliard and Chapman, ironmongers, Glasgow : he is of good address, about 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, pale face, teeth bad and discoloured, slenderly made, dark hair, and respectably dressed in dark clothes, with brown overcoat and black hat; he left Penrith without paying his hotel bill, and, from notes found in his carpet- bag, there is no doubt hut that he is travelling the countrj- victimizing hotel keepers, & c. Information to be given to Mr. Superin- tendent Carson, Penrith, Cumberland ; or at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, February 27. Description of three men who are charged with passing three forged £ 5 Bank of England Notes, at Cleator Moor, Cumberland, on the evening of the 9th instant. One, age about 30, height 5 feet 7 or 8 inches, fresh complexion, high cheek bones, sandy hair turned a little up behind, little or no whiskers; dressed in a dark cloth cap, brown cloth shooting coat, vest, and trousers; spoke with the Scotch accent. The others, age about 26 or 27, height 5 feet 8 or 9 inches; dressed in moleskin clothes, and had the appearance of labourers : one of them had a black mark below the right eye. The notes they uttered are dated and numbered— 21st March, 1860, No. 83165 ; 21st March, 1860, No. 70839 ; 11th December, 1860, No. 91103. Information to be given to Superintendent J. Little, Con- stabulary Office, Whitehaven, or at the County Chief Con- stable's Office, Carlisle, Cumberland.— Bow- street, February 25. MURDER AND MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING. JOHN GITTENS, the man charged with cutting and wounding Joseph Phillips, at Ludlow, on the 27th ultimo, has been apprehended at Bushbury, near Wolverhampton, Stafford- shire, and is committed to trial at the next assizes for the county of Salop.— Bow- street, February 27. GEORGE PAYNE, alias PILOT, SHOEMAKER AND labourer, of the same parish, also a regular poacher, is in the habit of tramping through the country, and sometimes begs, may be found in the company of prostitutes and at low lodging- houses and public- houses ; lie is about 35 years of age, nearly 5 feet 6 inches high, thinly made, sandy complexion, light brown hair, bald on the top of head, small whiskers, has a peculiar appearance on the right side of upper lip, and supposed tiie dressed in an old tweed coat, with two pockets inside and outside of skirt, one of the inside pockets is patched with a clean piece of calico, cord trousers, plush vest, cap, red necker- chief, and lace- up boots. They are brothers, and may or may not be travelling together; Soler is supposed to have in his possession an air- cane, which he may sell or pledge, and may also have with him a large - light- coloured lurfcher dog with black muzzle. .£ 50 reward is offered for informiltion that shall lead to the apprehension and conviction 6f the offenders. Further information respecting the property stolen from the cottage in the parish of Darsham, Suffolk, oft the 4tli, and advertised in the Police Gazette of the 15th instant: the Document referred to was a Debenture in the East Suffolk Railway Company, No. 18, for £ 200, dated the 8th November, 1858, with two interest warrants attached. Information to be given at the Police Station, Yoxford, East Suffolk.— Bow- street, Febiiiary 27. Between the hours of 6' 30 and 9 p. m. on the night of the 24th instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. John Chitham, grocer, of Bond- street, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was entered by some person or persons, with a false key, who broke open a Cash Box, and stole therefrom five or six £ 5 Notes, fourteen or fifteen Sovereigns, and £ 5 in Silver ; one of tile notes is supposed to be of the Tamworth Bank, No. 4993 or 5163, dated 9th May, 1845, three are supposed to be of the Nuneaton Bank, numbers not known. Information to be given to S. Austin, Superinten dent of Police, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, Feb. 27. Between the hours of 6 and 8 p. m. on" the 24th instant, during the absence of the family at divine service, the dwelling- house of Mr. Samuel Twyning, of Painswick, schoolmaster, was broken into, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz.: a £ 5 Note, of the Stroud Bank, £ 3 10s. in Gold, and about £ 3 in Silver ; a large pair- cased silver Watch,- white dial, badly cracked, italic figures, maker's name Benjamin Reeves, Framp- ton, NQ, 2969 ; and two Pocket Knives, the handle of one is buckhftsi, repaired with wood. Information to be given to Mr. W. Hanbridge, Superintendent of Police, Stroudwater, Gloucestershire.— Bow- street, February 27. Further particulars of the robbery at the residence of Lady Otvvay, advertised in the Police Gazette of the 22nd instant: £ 50 reward is offered for tile apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the property. On the evening of the 24th instant, the dwellling- house of Miss Welch, of No. 4, St. Mark's- place, Widcombe, Bath, was entered by opening the front door with skeleton keys, and the following articles stolen therefrom : a gold Ring, with five various stones, a pebble Brooch, set in gold, a cornelian ( and other stones) Brooch, set in gold, a coral Brooch, a pair of coral Ear- drops, a gold Watch Suspender, a Purse, containing 18s. in Silver, a small Box, containing four Sovereigns and some Silver, a silver Pencilcase with topaz stone, two silver Table j Spoons, marked ' G. On the 2pth instant, the cottage of Amos Winchester, near the Seven Thorns, Ilindhead, in the parish of Feversliam, was entered bv forcing the window, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz. :— a large black Overcoat, a basket of Oranges, and about 10s. in silver. Information to be giverf to C. Hollington, Surrey Constabulary, Farnham.— Bow- street February 25. Between 9 p. m. on the 21st and 5 a. m. on the 22nd instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Daniel Pudifoot, Hog- lane Farm, Chesham, Bucks, was broken into and entered, by breaking a pane of glass and unfastening the catch, and' the following articles of Wearing Apparel stolen : a common oil- cloth Overcoat, lined with the same kind of cloth as the outside only not oiled, with a row of dark horn or bone buttons and a coarse blue woollen collar, the property of the man- servant; a pair of black cloth Trousers, metal buttons the name of' S. Timpson, Berkhampstead,' stamped on them' lined all through with unbleached calico ; and a cotton Bundle Handkerchief, red ground with white spots, not, hemmed supposed a red border with white stripe, the property of Jonas Pudifoot. ELIZA WILLIAMS is now in custody on sus- picion, but the articles have not been found. Information to R Vi t / 2 POLICE GAZETTE. February 27. be given to Superintendent Hodgkinson, or the Chesham, Buclis.— Bow- street, February 25. The house of Thomas Southam, of Brackley, county of Northampton, was entered on the 13th instant, by breaking a pane of glass and unfastening the window, and the following property stolen therefrom : a grey Top Coat, with two pockets outside, and a small ticket pocket; a pair of old grey mixture Trousers, pieced at the bottom ; a pair of strong nailed lace- up Boots, newly fronted; and a calico Shirt, marked ' T. S.' with red cotton. ' Two tramps, who were begging in the neighbourhood, are suspected : one of them is about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, dark complexion and hair, and large dark whiskers; dressed in a dark blue pilot jacket, dark cord trousers, and black cap ; the other appeared a little younger, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, brown hair, and small light whiskers ; dressed in moleskin jacket and trousers, and dark cap ; their clothing was very dirty, and both had the appearance of foundry men. Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent F. Pannett, Towcester ; or to Inspector Thomas Heeps, Brackley, Northamptonshire. — Bow- street, Februaiy 22. On the evening of the 17th instant, the house and shop of Miss Bent, confectioner, of Wigan, was entered, by means of picking the lock of the door, during the absence of the family at church, and the following articles stolen therefrom, viz. : 1 gold Ring, set with six stones, a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, & c. 1 gold Ring, set with six or seven white stones or brilliants. 1 silver verge Watch, maker Joseph Potts, Golborne, No. 393. 1 massive gold Guard Chain, Belshaw pattern, had attached a gold Key, with a purple stone on one side, and a black one with a white mark across it on the other, a gold Locket, and gold Seal. 5 small- sized old fashioned silver Tea Spoons, marked ' M. A. C.' 1 silk Umbrella, with ivory handle ; and about 12s. in silver. Information to be given to Mr. William Simm, Chief Con- stable, Wigan.— Bow- street, February 22. Between the hours of 10 a. m. and 3 p. m. on the 17th instant, the dwelling- house of a labourer named Geo. Cooper, at Little Misbrooks, in the parish of Cuckfield, Sussex, was broken into, by means of removing part of the back window, whilst the family were at church, and the following property stolen therefrom, viz. : 1 piece of Ham, of about 6 lbs. weight, from a cupboard in the wash- house. 1 black velveteen Shooting Jacket, with ink marks on the left sleeve, from wiping the pen upon it. 1 black cloth Ye^ bound with black silk braid. 1 black cloth Vest, with wide collar. 1 buff and white coloured Vest, the back lined with white holland. 1 pair of men's black cloth Trousers. 1 pair of men's mixed pepper- and- salt- coloured Trousers. 1 old black silk Neckerchief, from a chest of drawers in a boy's bedroom upstairs. Information tb be given to Mr. J. Akehurst, Superintendent of Police, Cuckfield ; at the Chief Constable's Office, Lewes ; or at any Police Station in East Sussex.— Bow- street, Feb. 22. Inspector, ; lead to tbe restoration of the above, will be rewarded by the owner. Information to be given to Mr. W. G. Moran, Deputy , Chief Constable, Belper, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, February 27, Stolen from the parish of North Topham, Norfolk, on the night of the 21st instant, two gelding Asses, the property of Messrs. Cook and Buckenham, farmers; one is 7 years old, dark brown, mane clipped, and hair cut short under the jaws, of good size, and lately shod ; the other is 4 years old, of a lighter colour, the hair very thin and short on the tail, and in good condition. They were traced into the county of Suffolk, by Wattisfield, and are supposed to have been stolen by gipsies. £ 1 reward will be paid on the recovery of the same ( if stolen), and tbe conviction of the offenders, information to be given to Mr. Jones, Superintendent of Police, East Harling, Norfolk. — Bow- street, February 27. Stolen during the night of the 22nd instant, from a field at Sterch Farm, Priors Marson, adjoining the road from Byfield to Elmdon, which divides the counties of Warwick and Northampton, a fat wether Sheep, half- bred South Down, marked with small punch mark in the middle of the ear, and has ' R.' branded on the side ( if not worn out), and is dirty in the wool, from having been on turnips, the property of Mr. Russell, Sterch Farm," in the parish of Priors Marson. Infor- mation to be given to James Gaskins, Inspector of Police, Southam, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 27. Found, near Chesterfield, and supposed to have been stolen, eight. Woodland Sheep, and four Lambs, they are in very low condition, and the sheep appear to have belonged to different flocks. Information to be given to Superintendent Hunter, Chesterfield, Derbyshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Supposed to have been stolen on the 21st instant, from a meadow at Hampstead Marshall, Berks, the property of Mr. John Shuttle, a grey Horse, about 131 hands high, aged, wall- eyed, and in pretty good condition. Information to be given to Mr. John Shuttle, Hampstead Marshall, or to Mr. William Herifield, Superintendent, Berks Constabulary, Spenhamland, Newbury.— Bow- street, February 25. Supposed to have been stolen from a field in the township of Wednesfield, during the night of the 18th instant, a dark bay Horse, 13 hands high, long switch tail, rough coat, 2 years old, the property of Mr. Wm. Done, of Wednesfield. Informa tion to be given to Inspector Thompson, Willenhall, or to P. C. Thos. Cooper, Wednesfield Heath, near Wolverhampton, Staf- fordshire.— Bow- street, February 25. Stolen on the night of the 12th instant, from a stable at Tockington Park Farm, in the parish of Alveston, a brown bay cob Horse, 6 years old, about 15 hands high, black legs, short switch tail, has a small white star on forehead, a small white spot on the rump, and some white spots under the saddle, is in good condition, was clipped about two months since, the pro- perty of Mr. James King, who will pay a reward of £ 5 to any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, and recovery of the horse. • Information to be given to Mr. Thos. T. Gordon, Super- intendent, Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire. — Bow- street, February 25. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. LARCENY AND EMEEZZtEMEHT. On the night of the 21st or early on the morning Of the 22nd instant, an ewe Sheep was slaughtered in a field in the parish of Wombourn, Staffordshire, the property. of Mr. Jere- miah Hobson, of Swindon, and the carcass carried away ( the skin, entrails, and feet being left behind). A reward of £ 2 2s. will be paid by the owner to any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Sergeant Allen, Penn, near Wolverhampton ; to P. C. Eli Garner, Swindon ; or at any Police Station in the county of Stafford. — Bow- street, February 27. Supposed to have been stolen out, of a field at Holly Bush Farm, near Essington, Staffordshire, on the 20th instant, a brown Cob Horse Pony, 7 years old, 13 hands high, unshod, rough coat, brand mark with the letters ' J H ' on the hoofs of fore feet, the property of Mr. Thomas II' { ton, farmer, Great Wyrley, near Cannock. Supposed to have been stolen, from a field in, Barker Butts- lane, near Coventry, on or about the 5th instant, a'brown Cob Horse, 7 years old, 14 hands high, short tail, and nas' a white star on the forehead ; the property of Mr. Wm. Wright, who will pay £ 1 reward to any person giving such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to Mr. Thos. Absconded from Bath, and for whose apprehension a warrant has been issued, ELLEN RUSSELL, charged with stealing a case of Surgical Instruments, from the residence of Dr. T. Barratt, M. D,, of St. James's- square, Bath : she is about 30 or 35 years of age, middle height, oval face, has a scar on tbe left wrist, which has slightly injured the joint, a scar over the left eye, and a seam on the right side of the nose, near the eye,- whice she usually covers with French chalk; dressed in black lace bonnet and fall, black double- skirted dress, and grey mixture shawl, which she often wears as a mantle. She is in the habit of calling at the residences of medical gentlemen, and on being told that they are out, requests to be shewn to a room to write a note, when, if left unattended, she secretes some article about her person, and leaves. Absconded on the 15th instant, from the employ of George John Butt, 23, Chicksand- street, Whitechapel, stealing 15s. in Coppers, a lad 15 years of age, 4 feet 6 inches high, fair com- plexion, light hair, and dressed in a cord jacket and vest, black fctli cap, and blucher boots.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, Absconded from his lodgings at Bayston Hill, Salop, on the 24th instant, charged with stealing £ 2 10s. in Gold, a man about 26 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, fresh complexion, long dark hair and whiskers, shaved only down the centre of chin, ' W. L.' and anchor on one arm, old wound on right shin, mark of bullet having passed through calf of left leg: and is rather lame in the right foot ( being unable to bend it) ; dressed in white slop, with an old striped liverv waistcoat underneath, cord trousers, and strong; boots, the left one having a patch outside near the toe. He was formerly in the Navy, and has since travelled with Cook's Circus, in care of the elephant, but has latterly been working as a sawyer, and belongs to Hay, Breconshire. John Powell, a bricklayer by trade, is about 20 years of age, light hair and complexion, fresh looking, proportionately built, from 5 feet 6 to 7 inches high, and dressed ( when last seen in Oswestry) in a round moleskin jacket and trousers, and old black cloth cap. William Churton is about 5 feet 6 inches high, red hair, stoutly built, and is a joiner by trade. It is strongly suspected that they are together, and in the neighbourhood of Wrexham ( if they have not enlisted); they both absconded from Oswestry, when they heard of the police having found the lead. Stolen from a dwelling- house in Southport, Lancashire, on the morning of the 23rd instant, two men's check Shirts, one linen, the other cotton, both partly worn ; a pair of black cloth Trousers, without linings, much worn; an old white linen. Age about 33, height 5 feet 7 or 8 inches, light brown hair, beard growing under the chin, grey eyes, sallow complexion, long nose, looks down, rather stout, high shoulders, and walks quickly; dressed when he left Boston, on the 15th ultimo, in a dark or black coat with short body and long skirt, black vest, dark mixture trousers, and black hat; carried a black seal- skin cape and a small black leather bag. Description of a man, named CLAUDE PERCY PELHAM, who absconded from Brighton on the 19th instant, charged with converting to his own use a Concertina of which he was bailee : age about 57, height 5 feet 3 inches, very thin, no whiskers, light moustache, his hair is naturally light but he dies it, and his nose is a little on one side ; he is a tailor, pianoforte tuner, dancing master, and plays the concertina. He was brought up in Camden- town, likely to be at the west- end of London, and is likely to be known at No. 8, Crown- court, Wentworth- street, Whitechapel. The concertina has been found pawned at Brighton on the 18th instant. Stolen ou the afternoon of the 18th instant, from several jewellers' shops in the borough of Preston : one gold Watch ;. two gold Albert Chains ; one gold Pencil- case; and one gold Cross. By two men of the following description, who called to make some trifling purchases : one about 30 or 32 years of age, height 5 feet 9 inches, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, full bushy whiskers, and thin rough face, dressed in long dark mixture overcoat and black hat; the otber about 25 years of age, height 5 feet 5 inches, pale complexion, black hair and whiskers, thin imperial, and small Roman nose, and dressed in a dark overcoat, with velvet collar and pockets outside, and black hat. They left a parcel of herrings at the ' Theatre Tavern,' Preston, and stated they would call for it in lialf- an- I, o upon the parcel being examined it was found to contain th « J . olen property. On the following morning MARY WIL- KINSON, a prostitute, a native of Scotland, called at the above public- house, and asked for a parcel of fish which her husband had left on the previous day. She is 26 years of age, short, stout, and rather good- looking ; dressed in a grey seal- skin mantle, green plaid gown, brown muff and boa, green gauze bonnet trimmed with black silk velvet, red flowers, green ribbon, and black fall, states that she resides in Chatham- street, Stretford New- road, Manchester ; she was apprehended,, and remanded for a week, charged with being an accomplice of the two men, who can be identified. £ 5 reward will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the appre- hension of the offenders. Absconded from Warrington, Lancashire, on the night of the 16th instant ( charged with having stolen a Scarf Shawl, which has been recovered), a young man 22 years of age, 5 feet 8 jjtfihes high, prominent features,. rather fresh looking, neither ntfjjftache or whiskers, a good set of teeth, and hair cut very short, having the appearance of a gaol cut ; was dressed in a loose brown sack coat, with velvet collar, black cloth trousers, puce woollen scarf, grey billycock hat, and Wellington boots, with springs for spurs in the heels; stated that he was an equestrian, and that he had been employed at Messrs. Howes and Cushion's circus. Information to be given to Mr. John S. Macmichael, Chief Constable, Warrington, Lancashire.— Bow- street, February 22. in the neighbourhood, age 35, height 5 feet 2 inches, fail- complexion, light hair; dressed in a black coat, black vest, black trousers, black cloth cap, and Wellington boots. He carried a working suit of clothes with him. On the 14th ultimo, two men, of the following description obtained money under false pretences from Mr. Norman, Warwick- road, Carlisle, Cumberland: one age about 45, height 5 feet 7 or 8 inches, rather stout, light complexion, round face, short whiskers, and dressed in dark clothes, stated that he lately had a farm at Thursby, near Carlisle ; the other, age about 40, height 5 feet 8 or 9 inches, slender figure, long face, wide mouth, dark complexion, no whiskers, forbidding look, and dressed in a dark coloured coat, check waistcoat, and light cord trousers ; they stated that one of them had lost his cattle, and that they were collecting subscriptions to enable him to overcome his difficulties, both spoke the Cumberland dialect. Information to be given at the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle.— Bow- street, February 27. A warrant is issued for the apprehension of JOHN SMITH, carpenter, of Leverton, Lincolnshire, charged with obtaining goods under false pretences, from John Cartwright, ironmonger, Boston, on the 23rd ultimo, and other days; he is about 20 years of age, 5 feet II inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, no whiskers, scar on the right cheek, very slender, walks awkwardly, and high shouldered ; is very likely to enlist for a soldier. Whoever will apprehend the said John Smith, shall receive £ 1 reward, on application to George Waghorn, Superintendent of Police, Boston, to whom all information must be given.— Bow- street, February 27. Obtained by false pretences, on the 17th ultimo, from E. Riddell, Esq., Cheeseburn Grange, Northumberland, a cheque for £ 25, by three men of the following description. 1st. Age about 35, height 5 feet 8 or 10 inches, brown hair and whiskers meeting under the chin ; dressed in a dark coat and white billycock, and carried a topcoat over his arm. 2nd. Age about 30, height 5 feet 6 or 7 inches, dark hair and whiskers; dressed in dark clothes and black hat, and also carried a coat over his arm. 3rd. Age about 34, height 5 feet 7 inches, pale complexion, and had the appearance of being in bad health; dressed in dark clothes and black hat. They all spoke the Lancashire dialect. They stated that they were farmers in tbe neighbourhood of Preston, Lancashire, that they come to the north to buy horses, and had bought one for one of Mr. Riddle's tenants in Lancashire, but that the price was more than they had money to pay, and required the money for that purpose. Information to be given to Superintendent Stephenson, Hexham, Northumberland.— Bow street, Feb. 25. A man of the following description obtained, on tbe 12th instant,, 5s., under false pretences, from George Gadd, saddler, of Wragby, Lincolnshire, by way of selling him a pawn ticket for a silver watch and gold chain, stated to be pledged at Milnes and Bramby's, Lincoln. Gadd called at the shop, on the 15th instant, to redeem the articles, when it was discovered to be a forged ticket. Age about 20, height 5 feet 7 inches, black hair; dressed in a grey coat with cape, black trousert- s, and black cap, and had a bundle with him. He stated that he was a saddler in London, and that he was on his way to Grimsby, which is supposed to be false. He will no doubt try the same trick elsewhere. FELONIES ( Not otherwise described. J Charged with perjury in Edinburgh, ALEXANDER FORRESTER, a writer, age about 26, height 4 feet 10 or 11 inches, hunchbacked, rather fair hair and whiskers; gene- rally dresses in a black suit of clothes with black hat, and wears spectacles. Information to be given to Mr. R. L. Dymock, Procurator- Fiscal for Edinburgh, or to the Superintendent of the City Police, Edinburgh, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- strcet, February 27. Some evil- disposed person or persons did, between the night of the 19th, and the 23rd instant, rip and steal from the - cistern and roof of the tower of St. George's Church North, within the borough of Staleybridge, about 100 lbs. weight of Sheet Lead. Charged with feloniously assaulting two girls under 10 years of age, a Frenchman, about 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, brown hair, black moustache, pitted with small- pox, and dressed in a brown coat, black and check trousers, and low shoes; he is an engraver by trade.— Metropolitan Police, H Division, February 25. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. Missing from his home at Mount Pleasant, North Shields, THOMAS DOCHERTY, an Irishman, age about 20, height 5 feet 8 inches, thin light hair, small features; dressed in black coat and vest, white moleskin trousers, striped shirt, woollen scarf, black cap, and ankle boots ; it is feared that some ill has befallen him. Information to be given to Mr. John Hewett, Chief Superintendent, Police Office, Tynemouth.— Bow- strcet, February 27. The body of a newly- born male child was found in a pond at Sea- street, Herne Bay, Kent, on the 23rd instant,. Wrapped up as a bundle in a piece of old calico ( supposed to have been a window blind, darned in several places) and two pieces of brown paper, tied with twine and a piece of tape. An inquest was held on the body on the 25th instant, before T. T. Dela- saux, Esq., County Coroner, ancl the jury returned a verdict of ' Found Dead.' Information to be given to Mr. Wm. CHARLES COX, alias SPIDER, advertised in the Police Gazette as having absconded from Wynnstay stables in the parish of Ruabon, charged with violently assaulting, Thomas Lawley, a police constable, whilst in the execution of his duty, has been apprehended by the Shropshire Constabulary.— Bow- street, February 27. A man of the following description was committed to the Leeds Borough Gaol, on the 20th instant, for fourteen days, on a charge of vagrancy. He is 21 years of age, 5 feet 9f inches high, light brown hair, brown eyes, fair complexion, hut no whiskers, has the following marks in blue ink on his arms, viz., a clown and two flags, union jack and tricolour, crossed on right arm; ' Hannah Carrick,' a woman with a crown upon her head and a wreath in her hand, and a mermaid, fish, sailor, and rose and thistle on fore arm. It is strongly suspected that he has committed offences elsewhere, and that he has been previously convicted. Description of a young man who gives the name of CHARLES THOMAS LOMAX, which is supposed to be fictitious, committed for trial at the adjourned sessions to be held at Stafford, on the 6th of March next, charged with picking the pocket, of a lady in a carriage on the Great Western Railway, on the 19th instant. He is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6Jj inches high, light hair, grey eyes, fair com- plexion, no whiskers, marked on the left arm with the letter ' E.,' a heart, ' R.,' and a bracelet; dressed in a blue cloth overcoat, with velvet collar, black cap, mixed tweed jacket, dark cloth vest, and trousers. He has been in Burtou- upon- Trent, and other places, as a photographic artist, and it is sup- posed that he has committed offences elsewhere. Information to be given to Major McKnight, Deputy Chief Constable ; or to Inspector John T. Holland, Police Office, Westlaamwich, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, February 27. high, dark brown hair, black eyes, sallow complexion, and small round visage ; dressed in coarse dark cloth coat with pockets outside, cord trousers, and round felt hat ; states he is a native of Leeds, but speaks with an Irish accent. The three following men were also committed for one month each for attempting to pick pockets in the market. WILLIAM LEE, 21 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, whiskers shaved off, black eyes, long thin visage, and slender make ; dressed in tweed coat with large cape and without sleeves, a tweed coat underneath, black cloth trousers, hat, and low shoes ; he had a few combs, rings, & c., and stated he was a hawker, but since bis imprisonment he lias been employed as a tailor ; gives his address, Hanover- court, Milton- st., London. JOHN ANTILL, 22 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark brown hair, very- small whiskers well back, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, full oval visage, and has the mark of a cut on the right side of the upper lip ; dressed in a dark blue double- breasted pilot over- coat, cloth vest, black trousers, black hat, and buttoned boots. He stated that he belonged to Macclesfield, and was a carpenter; but since he has been in gaol has worked as a tailor, which it is supposed he has learned in some convict prison, as- he seems to know well how to make prison caps and suggested alterations that would make the caps similar to those worn by convicts in some prisons. They were at Lyme Regis on the 15th instant. It is suspected that they are regular thieves, and travel the country for the purpose of committing robberies. Description of two men who have been committed to the Chester City Gaol and House of Correction for trial at the ensuing quarter sessions, charged with housebreaking, also with attempting to escape from the above prison. One, WILLIAM TAYLOR, alias MCDONALD, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, and full round face ; he is a Scotchman, by trade a tailor, and has been tramping about the country. He absconded from his lodgings in Preston, Lancashire, after robbing them, and has been in prison in Edinburgh, where, at No. 369, High- street, he has a father living. The other, JOHN PENSON, alias SMITH, 24 or 25 years of age, 5 feet 4J inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, large nose, and full mouth, he is lame in the right leg, which is much shorter than the other, from disease in the hip, has three blue marks on left, and a blue star on the right arm ; he is a native of Newport, Shropshire, and is by trade a shoemaker. In 1857 he was convicted of arson, and sentenced to four years' penal servitude. They have both been in Coldbath Fields Prison, London, and are strongly suspected of having committed offences elsewhere.
