Time at the rate of one and a half minute per foot water- line. The race was about six miles, from near Crawl Point to the Windward state boat, anchored between Mount Langton and Ireland Island, back to the Leeward boat, and thence again a beat to the windward. Nothing could be more favourable than the day. There was a very advantageous view of the race from Mount Langton, where a large party were invited by his Excellency and Mrs Freeman Murray. Not the least interesting sight was the departure of the Indus for Halifax, and numerous were the handkerchiefs that fair hands waved from the verandah at Mount Langton, as she sailed majestically past. The first race was won by the Hostess Quickly, a St David’s b o a t; the second race by the Alarm, Capt Eldertou ( 26th Regiment), Mystery, Mr Barton ( ditto) second. After partaking of an elegant dejeuner, the company at Mount Laugton separated— not without a waltz and polka to that very useful CameroHian baud— much pleased with the day, though the regatta itse lf was perhaps only a secondary object— at least with the ladies. The weather is now becoming very hot. We are looking forward to four quiet months, when nothing will be lively except^ the mosquitoes and cockroaches— and a great portion of which will be spent under our respective verandahs.— Yours, & c, A B e rm u d ia n V is ito r . [ Our obliging correspondent's communications will at all times prove acceptable.— E d .] ETON v WEST KENT. This match was played on Thursday, July 16, and was an extremely even one. The Etonians went down rapidly a t first, until Messrs Norman and Dyne appeared at the wicket, which two gentlemen remained there for a considerable time, and were not disposed of until they had added 100 to the score. The West Jient obtained their runs quickly, especially Messrs Aitken and Deacon, who did not fail to keep the field awake, b u t at the close of the game the West Kent were unable to equal their opponent’s score by 18 runs. Score : ETON. B E RM U D IA N S PO R T S .- N o . I. Me E d i t o r : A book recently published by a field officer, entitled Bermuda, a Prison, a Fortress, and a Colony has given the reading publio an entertaining account of these remote islands, of which little was previously known except by naval and militry officers, who had been on the station. Those who take ati interest iu the subject caunot do better than consult the Field Officers. My purpose in this letter is to give a short account of tho races, which have just taken place here, and also to glance at the other amusements, which occasionally enliven the dead sameness of garrison life in the Bermudas. At an early hour, then, on the lOthof June, those who cast their eyes up St George’s harbour, aud far away where the blue waters meander amongst fairy islands of loveliest green, might see many a white sail bearing down for St George’s— “ Youth at the helm, and pleasure at the prow.” The morning was lovely, and the fresh westerly breeze the fairest that could blow; as the town of St George is situated at the eastern extremity of the “ still vexed Bermoothes” ( I love a quotation that is not hackneyed), consequently everything in the shape of a boat was iu requisition , a merry crowd was collected at the market wharf to watch the various disembarkations— a large portion consisted of the coloured population, the ladies of which were arrayed in most killing colours, with “ loves of bonnets;” while white trowsers, turn- down collars, and “ sweet things in waistcoats” adorned the darker dandies— all literally indulging in that caohination, which is characteristic of the r a c e ; and which, if not exactly melodious, chimes in well with th e humours of a gala day. At half- past one, the “ course” presented a scene of great animation, not greatly differing from a small country meeting at home, but with one remarkable exceptioa— tho majority of faces were of a dusky hue. The course, which is not quite half a mile round ( with a cricket ground iu the centre), lies on the narrow strip of land between the barracks and the sea; and though somewhat hilly and rough, with sharp turnings, is, independently of its convenient locality, perhaps as suitable a piece of ground as could bo found in the Bermudas, where anything like a level piece of turf of any extent is not to be met with. A fatigue party had been engaged for some days previously levelling the inequalities, putting down posts, & c, aud erecting “ a Grand Stand”— the latter, it must be confessed, more useful than ornamental. I ts architectural defects were, however, amply compensated for by the beauty of its contents— a rude casket for such fair gems ! But tho bell rings, and the Mr S * * *, in a scarlet coat ( borrowed from the theatre, and rather short in the waist), with ponderous whip aud stentorian voice, is charging up and down to “ keep the course clear.” The jockeys turn out in all tho glory of silk and satin and tops ! They might be going to ride a D erb y ! One or two had, however, imposed upon the public by converting their Wellington’s into a semblance of the genuine articles. The “ card” was as follows :— Stewards: Major Carey, Cameronians ; CaptTClerke, Cameronians; Dr Gilborne, R . A .; J . W. Musson, Esq; Dr R. F. Hunter. All arrangements were provided for th e accommodation of the various visitors. The Twenty- two were chosen from the district, and comprised some good players. The wickets looked good, but the turf, being of a spongy nature, made the ball difficult to time, and a shower of rain came on just as play was . going to begiu, which delayed the game nearly an hour. The first innings of the Eleven amounted to 43, of which Parr scored 24, by two threes, three twos, and four singles. The bowling of Jackson and Bickley, with the fielding ( not forgetting the beautiful long- stopping of Diver) was so good that the whole of the Uppinghamites were disposed of for 31 runs, Jackson himself taking fourteen wickets. This closed the first day’s play. Friday was a very line day for cricket. The ground was attended by more than 2,000 spectators, nearly half of whom were ladies. The play commenced with Moody and Hornby, both colts in the Eleven ; the former was leg before wicket, the latter played a steady innings for. seven; Bell made a long stand and scored 15, by three twos and nine singles. Parr was bowled for three runs. Anderson’s was a good 16, by one four, one three, two twos, and live siugles; Divor ( run out) made eight sing les; Brampton made 16, by one four, two threes, two twos, and two singles ; he gave an easy chance when he had scored seven, but was not taken. Brown contributed 11 by one four, one two, and five singles. The innings amounted to 86, leaving the Twenty- two 99 to win. Tho bowling of Tinley and Gibson was first- rate, aud the fielding of the Uppingham and Gentlemen does credit to thorn; in their second innings tlie first five wickets fell for nine runs, all to Jackson. This closed the second day’s play. On Saturday the rest were disposed of for 49 runs, making a total of 58, leaving the Eleven winners by 40 runs. Jackson bowled six men in seven balls; and Diver, at Bickley’s End, with glows, disposed of seven of the last wickets out of eight. Everything went off so well and satiafactorily, that there is no doubt the Eleven will again visit Uppingham. Score : T. E. Bagge, c and b Reeves__ 5 E. G. S. Hornby, run out............ 17 E. C. A. In the evening a subscription ball ( fancy dress) given by the military and civilians took place at Government House, which was kindly lent by his Excellency the Governor, when dancing was kept up till four o’clock, to the enlivening strains of the Cameronran Baud. I will now just glance at the other gaieties which during the last fortnight have broken the even tenor of Bermudian life. The writer was one of a party who was at a grand dinner given on board H. M. S. Indus, 78, Sir Houston Stewart, which has lately arrived on the station, aud had just returned from a West India trip. A party of about sixty sat down to a sumptuous dinner, which was laid out ou th e main deck, converted into a splendid banquetting hall, i covered in with flags arranged so as to form an immense i pavilion, aud ornamented| witli flowers and evergreens. The only ! drawback was th e absence o f the gallant admiral, from indisposition, but his place was ably filled by that frank sailor, his son, Captain Houston Stewart, & c. About one o’clock, beneath a splendid moon, the R. B. G. Lotus, with tho ] portly Commodore and a jovial party, spread her white sails to I a favouring breeze, and stood away for S t George’s. The strains of “ Auld Lang Syne,” rose from her tiny deck; and were wafted back a farewell to the gallant hearts “ we left behind u s.” Ou the Friday succeeding the races, a performance took place at the Garrison Theatre, which was built entirely by the men. I t is calculated to hold 500 or 600 people, aud has every convenience for w orking th e scenery, & c. A performance generally takes place about once a month. I t can boast of three distinct corps dramatiques, the men and the band of the Camerouians, and the officers of the garrison. Ou the present occasion “ Rob Roy” was played b y the men of the 26th. I t was got up at rather short notice, specially for the admiral, who is a true lover of all that pertains to the “ Land of the mountain and the flood.” His state of health, however, unfortunately prevented his attendance both on this occasion aud the day before, when he was to have dined at the mess of the Cameronians. The performance concluded with the farce of “ Diamond Cut Diamond,” by the officers of the Garrison, of which the following is the cast Oid Heaktxey .................. Dr Cullen, Cameronians. Ca ptain Seym o ur.............. Lieut Hale, Cameronians. C a p ta in H ow a rd .............. Capt Bridge, Cameronians. Te a p .................................. : .. L ieut Day, Cameronians. Trick ...................................... Lieut Wilson, R. A. C h a k lo t t e D o u b t f u l___ Ens Colebrooke, Cameronians. ' H is Excellency Col Freeman Murray came down in his fourin- hand, with his suite and two officers of th e Cameronians on detachment at Hamilton. I t is gratifying to find that the authorities here, with one exception, are always foremost in encouraging this rational amusement, which is so desirable a recreation for th e soldiers here, who have few means © f employing their leisure hours, and are consequently more exposed to the temptation of that bane of the British army— drunkenness. In speaking of the Governor, I must not omit to mention the fancy dress ball given by his Excellency aud his amiable lady at their residence at Mount Langton, 011 the 3d inst. I t would require a more imaginative pen than mine to give novelty to the description of a fancy ball. I t is a “ thrice told tale,” Imagine, then, th e usual “ Sound of revelry by night,” The “ bevies of fair dames and stalwart knights.” “ Tho peasant girls with dark blue eyes,” the lovely sultanels “ Whose orange silk full Turkish trowsers furl’d, About the prettiest ancles in the world,” the piquant vivandiere— with ancles as above— Friar Tuck and Dick Turpin, Massaroni and Ivanhoe, Zouaves and Chasseurs d’Afriques, with a goodly sprinkling of British officers o fth e nineteenth century, and you have a faint idea of the sc en e ; the night was tropical, but still ’ twas *' On with the dance! let joy be unconfin’d, No sleep ’ till morn, when youth and pleasure meet To chase the glowing hours with flying feet.” But people can’t dance for ever even to th e Cameronian band. The demand for beds at Hamilton was greater than the supply. I t is to be hoped the ladies were all suitably provided fo r ; but more than one gallant knight, if not exactly " Pillow’d on buckler cold and hard,” had to woo " Tired Nature’s sweet restorer, balmy sleep” oa the floor of the Royal Bermudian Yacht Club.
