NOTICES TO CORRESPONDENTS. We state explicitly, in reply to numerous inquiries, that we have nothing to do with persons xcho address by post the advertisers in the LABOUR LIST, offering certain services, information, receipts, in- structions, & c., in return for postage stamps. Nor do ice hold ourselves responsible for the integrity of advertisers who adopt our paper as their medium, even though letters are to be addressed to them at our office. The subscribers to the LIST must use their own discretion in all doubtful cases. We strongly urge not only the propriety but the expediency of parties applying for situations advertised in our pages, slating that their applications are in consequence of seeing the announcement M THE LABOUR LIST. Employers who issue their notices through our pages will be gratified to find those notices effective, and will feel themselves bound to attend to communications solicited by them through this useful medium. Whenever a situation is advertised more than once in THE LABOUR LIST, it is because we have received information that it has not been filled up. We beg to suggest to drapers and others advertising for assistants, that they should alicays state whether male or female assistants are required. In the absence of such information, we feel much difficulty in classifying the advertisements. It is of the utmost importance that advertisements for insertion in THE LABOUR LIST should be prepared EARLY. TO ensure insertion they should be in our hands EVERY SATURDAY and WEDNESDAY. Those that reach us on the Monday and Thursday run a risk of being omitted. HOW TO WRITE AN ADVERTISEMENT! WE wish to give a hint or two upon this subject to the very large number of persons seeking situations, who avail themselves of the pages of THE LABOUR LIST. What is your object ? Not so much to inform Employers of your WANT, as of your PROFESSION, your TRADE, the ABILITY you possess for serving them. Remember, when an Employer examines our advertisement pages, it is His OWN interest which he endeavours to serve. YOURS IS to him secondary considera- tion. Well, then, how should your advertisement begin? Thus? WANTED, by a highly respectable person, a situation as— No ! that's not the way ; for the Employer, whom we will assume to be a busy man ( or he wouldn't require your help), might run his eye hastily down a column of advertisements commencing in that manner, and, though you might be the very person to suit him, the chances arc that his glance would pass onward, and you be overlooked. Just consider for one moment how much greater trouble it would be to YOU to ascertain whether any situation offered in the pages of THE LABOUR LIST was suitable to you, if, instead of the advertisements commencing with thr sub- stantive statement of the PERSON required, they all cop » nence< l in the same manner— WANTED, a highly respectable young person, to fill a situ- ion' & c Aid us, therefore, in simplifying the matter, and ' n promoting your interests to the fullest extent possible. you a BOOK- KEEPER ? Say so at once ! for the Employer ' 10 ls looking for a GROOM doesn't want to read your advertisement' he ; vants to know :— First, What are you?" Second, What qualifications do vou possess ? ADVICE TO PERSONS SEEKING SITUATIONS. When an advertisement requires you to " apply by letter," do not apply personally. , . , BE punctual to any appointment the advertiser may make. Let your application be written legibly, and as briefly as is consistent with its purpose. ... , Remember that a business man will readily discover business habits. Always give the best references you can procure, and have them ready before you are asked for them. Never give' the name of a person as a reference until you have ob- tained his permission to do so. _ ( Personal references are always more satisfactory than written ' cha- racters" or " testimonials." Never accept a situation at a less salary than you desired to obtain, unless you are prepared to do your best. Never profess to do more than you are capable of, for disappointment and dismissal must speedily ensue. Remember that your character in your present situation may in- fluence your success in a future and better one. TAILORS' STRIKE— Tn reference to excited misrepresenta- 9 tions published by the journeymen tailors, we beg to state that it con- tains mis- statements so exaggerated that they need not be replied to. In point of fact, we have been paying 20s. to 2ls. per week to men at present on strike, and are willing to continue the same rate to competent workmen. We offered this to- dav, and it was refused.— Arthur. Carrie, and Co., John Watson, Wm. Morrison, Robert Middleton. Ayr, Scotland. TO JOURNEYMEN TAILORS and the'Public generally.— Journeymen Tailors are advertised for by Messrs. Arthur. Currie, and Co., John Watson, William Morrison, and Robert . Middleton, master tailors in Ayr. Constant work at 20s. per week is promised. Now, lest journeymen tailors at a distance and the general public be deceived by said advertise- ment. the operative tailors of Ayr are under the necessity of making the fol- lowing statement : That we have struck for higher wages we unhesitatingly deny: but we protest against having our wages reduced: and hence our pre sent position. Nearly two years aco a 6cale of prices was drawn up and mutually agreed toby masters and journeymen, whi • h scale fixed our wages at the rate of 18s. per week of sixty hours; and up till Saturday last this scale wa « adhered to by both parties; althouph we can safely say that a reference to the wajjes book-? of the most fashionable shops in town will prove tbe wages of journeymen tailors not to have averaced more than 8s. per week during the last two years. A few first- class workmen may, for short periods, have re- ceived 18s. per week, still it is undeniable that a great number have averaged leas than 8s per week. Even under these adverse circumstances the journey- men did not ask a revisal of the scale, but continued to work at the rate fixed, until certain master tailors issued a new scale, which they are determined, without anv arbitration, to adopt, and by which our hitherto miserable pittance will be still farther reduced- to the extent of from twenty to thirty per cent! and no alterative is given us but to accept of the new and reduccd scale of wapes, or leave our places. We choose the latter course. And now we respectfully ask the public whether any faith can be put in the sincerity of the masters' statement, that good workmen will receive 20s. a week on apply- ing at any of tbe shops, from which the men have been thus ruthlessly driven. No We r peat— this announcement is only a ruse to mislead operatives at a distance, and to cover in the eyes of the public the aegressive act of the parties signing the advertisement, an act rendered doubly cruel considering the inclemency of the weather, dull trade, and present high rates of pro- visions. Having thus stated the true facts of the case at issue between us and our employers, we leave a discernin? public to judge whether the present conduct of the above named masters entitles them to the support of their fellow- townsmen The operatives are happy to state that two employers, viz.. Mr. William Hamilton. New- market- street, and Mr. Andrew M'Murtrie. High- street, are honourable exceptions to the above. To these gentlemen's credit be it said thev have not turned out their men ; but continue to pay the rate of wages mutually fixed by the masters and journeymen two years ago, By order nf the committee, Daniel Cumming, President, John Cowan, Secretary, Ayr, Scotland.
