On the morning of the 21st ultimo, between the hours of 4 and 5 o'clock, one EDMUND TOTTLE, was wilfully Mur- dered by some person or persons unknown, at or in Merafield Plantation, in the parish of Plympton St. Mary, in the county • of Devon, belonging to the Right Hon. The Earl of Morley, as appears by an Inquisition holden on view of the Body of the said EDMUND TOTTLE.— A Reward of £ 50 will be paid by her Majesty's Government, and the like sum of £ 50 by the said Earl of Morley, to any person who will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders ; and The Right Hon. The Secre- tary of State for the Home Department will recommend the Grant of her Majesty's most gracious Pardon to any accom- plicc ( not being the Person who actually committed the Murder), who shall give such evidence as shall lead to the same result.— Bow- street, February 4. On the 16th ultimo, about 9 o'clock in the evening, Mr. Shepherd, the governor of the Wakefield House of Correction, was feloniously Fired at, in the Back- lane, Wakefield, with intent to Shoot him.— A Reward of £ 100 will be paid by Her Majesty's Government, and an additional Reward of .£ 100 by Mr. Shepherd, to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders; and the Right Hon. the Seorotary of State for the Home Department, will advise the grant cf Her Majesty's Pardon, to any accomplice ( not being the person who actually Fired the Shot) who will give such information a3 c- hall lead to the same resiilt.— Bow- Strut, January 30. ARSON AND WILIUL BURNING. Between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock on the night of the 7th instant, some person or persons feloniously Set Fire to a stack of Wheat, situate in a field in the parish of Hunton, near Mitcheldever, Hants, whereby the whole was consumed, the property of Robert Pitter, Esq., of Hunton Down Farm.— A handsome Reward will be paid to any person who will give information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders.— Information tj be given to James Blair, superintendent of the Hants Constabulary, Winchester. — Bow- street, February 9. FORGERY. Absconded, from Gayles, in the North Riding of York- shire, JOHN BARKER, charged with Forging and Utter- ing a Promissory Note, and by such Forging and Uttering, the said JOHN BAKKER obtained from John Hind, Esq., of Gayles, the sum of £ 200. On the 30th of December, 1844, he absconded, and went to America, but has since returned. He has been seen in Northallerton, in Yorkshire, but is supposed at present, to be in Scotland, probably employed on a railway, at some light work, such as plate- laying, & o. lie applied at the Caledonion Line about three weeks since for work, and wa told to apply next morning, but neglected to do so. He is 32 years of ape ( but looks older), about 6 . eet high, dark brown hair nnd whiskers, grey eyes, fresh complexion, rathei £ 20 Reward will be paid on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, on application to T. H. Prosser, chief constable, Coventry.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen, on the 8th instant, from the Person of Alexander Patterson, of 6, East India- road, a gold Watch, maker's name ' J. Mairhead, Glasgow, No. 13667.'— Metropolitan Police, F Di- vision, February 9 Stolen, on the 6th instant, from the Person of Mr. Med- hurst. of 12, Bridge- street, Lambeth, while in the ' Caledonian Coffee- house,' a gold Geneva lever Watch, cold dial, engine- turned cases, with chased edges, jewelled in thirteen holes, has the name of 1 John M. Tobias' engraved on the dome ; a gold brequct Chain, fancy pattern, solid horse's head, and a Key at the end. By two Females, who are in custody ; the Watch has not been found.— Metropolitan Police, 1U Division, February 9. Stolen, on the evening of the 4th instant, from the Person of John Mounsen, while at BKindest on ' Queen's Head Inn,' in the county of Suffolk, a silver stop Watch, No. ' 1969,' with a common steel Chain and Seal attached.— Information to be given to J. Gobbett, sub inspector of police, Earl Soham, near Framlingham, Suffolk.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the Person of Mr. Leight, of 23, Millbrook- street, Westminster, while in Mermaid- court, Charinc- cross, a Purse, containing a gold curb lin< Chain. By a Prostitute, of short stature, and fair complexion; dressed in a dark green gown, and dark bonnet, with veil.— Metropoli- tan Police, A Division, February 6. Stolen, on the 4th instant, from the Person of " Mr. Peter Howland, of lli, Middleton- square, while at the Entrance of the Princess's Theatre, a gold Watch, full- sized, single- cased, engine- turned back, chased ring and side, cold face, seconds bind, capped and jewelled, and has the name ' Lousia Mary Rowlands, May 22nd, 1822,' engraved inside the case.— Metro- politan Police, A Division, February 6. Stolen, about 4 o'clock P. M. of the 2nd instant, from the Person of Mr. W. Cramer, 3. Newton- road, Westbournc- grove, Paddington, supposed at the Terminus of the Great Western Railway, an engine- turned, chased oblong silver Snuff- box. with the initials on the lid ' W. C.' in old English, size 3 inches by and weighs 5 ounces.— Information to be given to J. Collard, at the Great Western Railway Terminus, Pad- dington.— Bow- street, February 5 Stolen, on the 28th ultimo, from the Person of Edward Dillion, captain of the ' Azore' Sloop, between Cotton's Wharf, Tooley- street, and Bow- street, a silver Watch, maker's name ' Neal;' a silver repeating ditto, same maker ; and a Pocket- book, containing Papers,— Metropolitan Police, M Di- vision, February 5. face, and stout made ; dressed in a fustian jacket, cord breeche8 and leggings, half- boots, and black hat.— Information to be" given to T. E. Collinson, police officer, Ripon.— Bow- street, Fe- bruary 11. On the night of the 8th instant, the Dwelling- house of Mr. John Bridgewater, 22, Gloucester place, Cheltenham, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen there- from, viz. : six silver Table- spoons, nearly new, marked ' J. B.' in old English ; six do. do. marked ' I. M. B.' in Roman letters J and a pair of silver Sugar- tongs, with the same mark.— Infor- mation to be given to William Hanbridge, superintendent of police, Cheltenham.— Bow- street, February 10. On the night of the 4th instant, the Dwelling- house of Mr. William Mastin, farmer, of Tattershall Thorpe, was bur- glariously broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therein, viz. : a double canvas Purse, containing five Sove- reigns and a half, a Crown, some Sovereigns, and other Monies, amounting to £ 8 or £ 9 ; part of an old Glove, containing 7s. in silver ; a Money- box, containing about 10s. in silver Coins, several of which were Fourpenny- pieces ; a lead- coloured silk Shawl, with dark border and fringe; a chocolate- coloured Handkerchief; and an old- fashioned single- barrelled Gun, stocked to the muzzle, wide bore, worn rather thin, with a flint and steel lock. The burglary was committed by two Men, armed with an Axe and a Plough- coulter, which they stole at the same time ; they had knitted night- caps on their heads, and wore their shirts over their other clothes; were botli large Men, and one of them had a large straight nose, nipped in on each side.— Information to be given to Thomas Copper- thwaite, police constable, Horncastle.— Bow- street, February 9. On the night of the 2nd instant, the Shop of Mr. Thomas Mayne, of Stonehouse, near Plymouth, Devon, silversmith and watchmaker, was broken and entered, and the following arti- cles, amongst others, stolen therefrom, viz.: 15 gold Chains, varying in value from £ 3 to £ 10 each; 50 Wedding- rings, stamped inside with the initials ' T. M.;' and 150 gold fancy Rings, each ring has a number scratched on the inside.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall upon such conviction receive £ 50 Reward.— Information to be given to Mr. T. Mayne, or to the Clerk to the magistrates at Stonehouse.— Bow- street, Ftbniary 5. About 3 o'clock P. M. of the 1st instant, at Bulchcoch, in the parish of Llanatier, near Barmouth, Merionethshire, three Men entered the Dwelling- house of Mr. William Williams, and stole therefrom a £ 5 Note, of the Merionethshire Bank, £ 6 in gold, and some silver ; also a shell Hat, without nap, and had a large brim. The men wore thick cloth caps, without peaks. Supposed to be Englishmen. One of them wore a dark coat. Three persons nearly answering the above description passed through Dolgelly on Sunday evening.— Bow- street, February 4. On the night of the 30th ultimo, or early the following morning, the Counting- house of Mr. Swinford, hoyman, of Margate, was broker, into, and about nine Sovereigns, live Half- sovereigns, and £ 20 in silver money stolen therefrom : there were about £ 7 in half- crowns among the silver.—£ 5 Re- ward will be paid to any person who will give such informa- tion as shall lead to the apprehension of the offenders ; and a further Reward of £ 5 on conviction. Marchant, superintendent of police, Margate ; or to John Harvey Boys, Esq., secretary to the Margate Prosecution As- sociation, Hawley- street, Margate.— Bm- street, February 2. HOUSE- BREAIOMG. On the mornirg of the 9th instant, a Shop was broken and entered, at Ripon, and the following Goods stolen there- from, viz.: four black plated beaver Hats, 21 inches in the brim, value about 4s. 6d. each, with yellow leather and white calico linings, ' Patent Waterproof,' or ' Superfine Elastic Water- proof,' upon them ; also, marked with white chalk underneath the linin?. A Man, of the following description, is suspected : a farm- servant, about 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, 24 years of age, red hair, red whiskers, wide mouth, thick lips, broad HORSE ATXD CATTLE STEALING. Stolen or strayed, from an Orchard at Alderminster, half- way between Stratford- on- Avon and Shipston- on- Stour, on the night of the 9th instant, a Bay Gelding Pony, withont any white, has a slit in one ear, a spavin on one of his hocks, is about 12 hands high, rough- coated, and had a long tail.— In- formation to be given to — Taylor, superintendent of police, Stratford- on- Avon, Warwickshire.— Bow- street, February 11. Found straying, near Hatfield, and supposed to have been stolen, about two months bince, a Brown Cob Gelding, aged, about 141 hands high, has a long white mark about halfway down the forehead, and both hind feet are white.— Informa- tion to be given to Superintendent I'ye, Hatfield Station.— Bow- street, February 11. Stolen or strayed, from Crebbin, on the evening of the 7th instant, the preperiy of Mr. Thomas Davies, a Black Mare Poney, about 13 hands high, long tail, with a swelling on the back caused by the saddle.—£ l Reward will be paid on re- covery of the same ( if stolen), on conviction of the offender or offenders ; and if strayed, on restoration of the same, on application to Mr. Thomas Davies, of Victoria- Cottage, Lam- peter.— Information to be given at the Chief Constablc's- Office, near Newquay, Cardiganshire. — Bow- street, February 11. Found, straying, at Llangadock, on the 5th instant, and supposed to be stolen, a 4- year- old Iron Grey Cob Horse, 14J hands high, white head, black legs, switch tail, and had a. halter about its neck.— Information to be given to the Super- intendent of Police, Llangadock division of constabulary, Car- marthenshire.— Bow- street, February 10, Stolen, on the night of the 7th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, from the Farm- yard of Mr. Thomas Sorby.. c. i Chevet, near Wakefield, a Brown llorse, half- bred, 11 years ois, about 15 hands 3 inches high, has an entire tail, excepting it little deficient in hair ; fine coat, a little hollow in the back, broad in the loins, and a little white on one of t) ie hind heels.— Whoever will give such information as sha'l lead to the appre- hension and conviction of the offender or offenders to Mr. Raynor, superintendent of police, Sheffield, shall receiyo Us • ward of £ 5.— Bow- stve^, February 10, 4302 POLICE GAZETTE. February 11. Stolen or strayed, oil the night of the 6th instant, from a Meadow a(\ joining the road at Balking, near Faringdon, Berks, a stout Nag Gelding, colour bright Bay, with long black switch tail, and long black mane, about 7 years old, and from 14i to 15 hands high ; it has a white ""' idle- mark, a white collar- mark on the withers, and two or three soars on the inside of the hind legs and thighs.— If stolen, a Reward of 15 will be paid to any person giving such information as will lead to the ap- prehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, on ap- plication to Mr. Robert Mattingly, of Balking aforesaid ; and if strayed, all reasonable expenses will be paid on recovery of the same.— Bow- street, February 9. Stolen, on the evening of the 5th instant, from a Field situate in the Garrison- lane, in the borough of Birmingham, a Dark Brown Mare, half- bred, 6 years old, about 14 hands 1 inch high, long back, four black legs, ( recently trimmed,) has three saddle- marks on the near side, and a bushy switch tail.—£ 5 Reward will be paid upon the apprehension of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Mare, on application to Mr. Richard Howle, Moor- street, Birmingham.— Dow- street, Febru- ary 9. Stolen, on the night of the 7th instant, a Dark Brown Horse, hollow- backed, about 15 hands high, and 8 years old, with a long tail, and a small white mark on the far hind foot, near the hoof ( stolen from the Farm- yard of Mrs. Sorby, of Chevet, near Wakefield).— Any person who will tivo such in- formation as will lead to the recovery of t. ro said Horse, and the conviction of the offender or offendc. s, shall receive a Re- ward of £ 5, on application to Mrs. Sorby, or to John Brierly, constable, Wakefield.— Bow- streei, February 9. Stolen or strayed, on the night of the 1st instant, from a field in the parish of Bridgeham, a Bay Horse Pony, 5 years old, and about 12 hands high, with a very rough coat. Also a Nag- bred Filly, rising 2 years old, about 14 hands high, white fetlocks behind, and a small portion of hair rubbed off the loin on the right side— the property of the Rev. Mr. Carrie, of the parish of Bridgeham.— Information to be given to the Superin- tendent of Police, Hockham, Norfolk, or at the Chief Consta- ble's Office, St. Giles's- road, Norwich.— Bow- street, February 7. The Red Roan Pony advertised in the ' Police Gazette ' on the 2nd instant, as stolen or strayed from the parish of Lar- ling, Norfolk, on the 22nd ultimo, has been found and restored to the owner.— Bow- street, February 7. Stolen or strayed, on the 22nd ultimo, a Red Roan Mare Pony, in foal, about 8 or 9 years old, about 13 hands high, switch tail, and has broken knees ; the property of Mr. Brun- dell, of Larling.— Information to he given to the Superinten- dent of Police, Hockam, Norfolk ; or at the Chief Constablo's Office, St. Giles's- road, Norwich.— Bow- street, February 6. The Mare advertised in the ' Police Gazette' of the 30th ultimo, has been recovered. The Man charged with stealing the same, is still at large : he is about 40 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, swarthy complexion, has very prominent dark eyebrows, very small whiskers, and is generally dressed as a butcher.— Information to be given to Sergeant White, of the Smithfield Police, Bow- lane- station, London.— Bow- street, Fe- bruary 6. Stolen, on the night of the 3rd instant, from the neigh- bourhood of Stevenage, Herts, an entire Grey Horse, 5 years old, about 15 hands high, of the Spanish breed, switch tail which he carries rather low, very high action in front, hi* h crest, long flowing mane, and has the forest mark on one of his thighs.— Information to be given to Inspector Gore, Herts Rural Police, Stevenage.— Bow- street, February 6. Absconded from St. Helen's, on the 2nd instant, JOHN RAWSON, charged with embezzling £ 32 2s. Gd., the property of Mr. John Lyjn- his Master. The said JOHN RAWSON is about 28 or 29 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, sallow complexion, dark Vruwu hair, lujig thin face, very thick lips, and small thin whiskers; dressed in a common blue pilot- cloth coat, with horn buttons, and pockets outside, dark plaid satin vest, brown cloth trousers with an invisiblo blue stripe, an old black silk hat with brim broken, blue stockings, and low shoes, also wore a white shirt- front with holes for studs, and states that he has been a collier, and has been employed by Mr. Lyon about five or six months. He is in the habit of walking with his hands in his coat pockets, and his arms much contracted behind.— Information to be given to Mr. Superintendent Storey, county constabulary, Town Hall, St. Helens, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, February 6. FELONIES Not otherwise described. Description of JAMES FROST, who has absconded from the parish of Horsham Saint Faith's, in the county of Norfolk, charged with the Manslaughter of John Tice, alias Pointer, and for whose apprehension a c. roner's warrant has been is sued. The said JAMES FROST is about 18 years of age, about 5 feet 5 inches high, very fresh complexion, full round face, brown hair, bushy at the sides, and no whiskers ; is su p- posed to be dressed in fustian trousers, black hat, and a black velvet frock coat, or a green cotton coat, cut taglioni fashion. — Information to be given to Surerintendent fiamblin?, Cat- ton, or at the Chief Constable's- oflico, St. Giles's Gates, Nor- wich.— Bow- street, February 4. L& BCENY AND EHBEXZL ; MENT. Absconded, from Glastonbury, in the county of Somerset, on the 3rd instant, GEORGE GRADDON, charged with em- bezzling several sums of Money, belonging to his master, Mr. Alexander Bailey, saddle and harness- maker, of the same place. The said GEORGE GRADDON is about 26 years of age, about 5 feet inches high, thin grown, pale face, brown hair, which he wears long behind, brown whiskers nearly meeting at the point of the chin, thin nose, and small weak eyes ; was dressed in a plaid coat, and a brown top coat with plaid lining, is by trade a saddler and harness- maker, and is a native of ( Devonshire.— Any person apprehending the said GEORGE GRADDON, and lodging him in any of her Majes- ty's Gaols, shall receive £ 1 Reward, on application to the said Mr. A. Bailey, at the ' White Hart Inn, Glastonbury.' Infor- mation to be given to J. Hill, inspector of Police, Bridgwater, who holds a warrant for his apprehension.— Bow- street, Febru- ary 9. Absconded, early on the morning of the 31st ultimo, from the employ of Mr. Overton, wholesale tea- dealer, of Walsall, THOMAS FINCH, a porter, taking with him £ 9, the money of his master. He is about 32 years of age, 5 feet 9£ inches hi^ h, dark brown hair, ( rather grey,) no whiskers ; has a lump under the right car, which is rather conspicuous, front teeth rather prominent, and speaks with the Berkshire accent; is rather ' knock- kneed' of the right leg, but walks erect; is a native of Aston Tirrold, Berks, where his father resides. A.;' about £ 40 in gold and silver ; and an old spaded Guinea, dated ' 1765,' being one of George the Third's reign. By three Men: one of them is from 30 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, rather sandy ' com- plexion, and small sandy whiskers ; was dressed in a black hat ( and wore whilst in doors occasionally a fur cap), a blue and black- coloured plaid frock coat, very small, with glass but- tons, a blaek velvet waistcoat, black cloth trousers, Wellington boots, black silk neckerchief, and is proportionably stout. Another, is 47 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, and has a dark complexion, hair, and eyes ; was dressed in a black Iapelled coat, rather wider in the lapels than are gene- rally worn, black cloth waistcoat with a narrow roll collar, dark trousers, black hat and neckerchief, side- laced boots, and a light- coloured striped chesterfield coat over his body coat, which is slit up a few inches behind. The third Man has a peculiar appearance, is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, no whiskers, long nose, thin face, and is very thick in his speech ; was dressed in a dark cloth ches- terfield coat made rather long, very wide cord trousers ( nearly as broad as the little finger,) light waistcoat, rather long, lace- up boots inside, black hat, and a black and white plaid scarf. — Information to be given to Captain Bailey, chief constable, Police- Office, Cambridge.— Bow- street, February 6.
