Description of GEORGE EVANS, who stands charged nvith the wilful Murder of Jlne Mellin, at Manchester. He is about 21 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, rather stout, left eye sore, particularly at the corner, and requires often to use a handkerchief, dark brown hair, short behind and long at the sides, no whiskers, and round face; dressed in dark moleskin jacket and trousers, dirty green cloth waistcoat, dark cap with braid round it; he is by trade a mechanic, had in his possession a silver lever Watch, double- bottomed,' No. 2017,' that he stole from the above house, and a large blue box about 1 $ yards in length, and he is supposed t » be a native of Bristol.— Informa- tion to be given to Mr. Richard Beswick, chief superintendent of police, detective department, Town- hall, King- street, Man- chester, or to — Taylor, superintendent of police, Town- hall, Chorlton- iipon- Medbck.— Bow- street, August 19. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. About 3 o'clock on the morning of the 21st instant, a Stack of old Wheat, the prpperty of Mr. Richard Fox, of Scrivelsby, near Horncastle, Lincolnshire, was Fired by an Incendiary, and " destroyed.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive the sum of £ 25 from the Honourable Sir Henry Dymoke, Bart.; £ 50 from Mr. Daniel Caparn, asrent to the County Fire- office; £ 25 from the said Mr. Richard Fox; and £ 25 from the Treasurer of the Ilomcastle New Association,— which Rewards will be paid on such conviction, and every lawful measure shall be adopted for the purpose of saving harmless any person or persons impeachiug his or their accomplice or accom- plices.— Bow- sireet, August 23. Eailv in the morning of the 10th instant, several Stacks of Wheat, belonging to Mr. Brigham, of Slingsby, in the county Cf York, then standing in a Close in the parish of Slingsby afore- said, in his occupation, were feloniously Set on Fire and destroy- ed.— The following Rewards will be paid to any person who will give such information as may lead to the apprehension and con- viction of the offender or offenders, viz.: by the Right Hon. the Earl of Carlisle, £ 10; by the County Fire Insurance Company, £ 100; by the Yorkshire Fire Insurance Company, £ 50 ; and by the said Mr. Brigham, £ 5. And the proper means will be used to obtain Her Majesty's most gracious Pardon for any accom- plice who will give such information as shall lead to the same re- sult.— Bow- street, August 14. ROBBERY PROM THE PERSON. Stolen, on the 21st instant, from the Person of Mr. John Madali, 7, Gloucester- place, Portman- square, a gold double- bottomed patent lever Watch, with a small Chain, plain Seal, and Geneva Key attached, and ' Huit tres en pier finas engraved on the inside, maker's name ' Pierre Rey.' By a Fe- male, 35 years of age, rather tall, stout, pale, face, dressed in a red gown, white straw bonnet, and figured shawl.— Metropo- litan Police- office, August 24. Stolen, from the Person of a Gentleman, on board Her Ma- jesty's Mail Steam- boat the 1 Queen,' at Liverpool, on the 19th instant, a red silk Purse, containing a £ 10 Bank of England Note,' No 82635,' dated ' 4th April, 1844;' and a £ 5 Bank of Ireland Note, with some silver.— In'ormation to be given to — O'Connor, superintendent of police, Lower Castld- yard, Dublin. — Metropolitan Police office, August 23. Stolen, on the night of the 17ih instant, from a Gentleman in the neighbourhood of Williamson- square, Liverpool, a gold duplex Watch, engine- turned cases, maker's name * Manning, Dublin, No. 100' on the inside back case, with a gold Guard and MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 1844. brequet Chain ; and a gold finger Ring, set with two diamonds, and enamelled round.—£ 2 Iteward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender and recovery of the properly, on application to the Commissioner of Police, High- street, opposite the Town- hall, Liverpool.— Bow- street, August 22. Stolen, on the 17th instant, from the Person of Colin Fraser, of 38, Frederick- street, Hampstead- road, while near Brook- street, New- road, a double - bottomed silver Watch, maker's name ' Marks, No. 1008.'— Metropolitan Police- office, August 21. Stolen, on the 17th instant, from the Person of Captain Gould, 5, Upper Eaton- street, while in Ranelagh- mews, with a Female, a Pocket- book containing two £ 5 Bank of England Notes ; a Bill of Exchange for £ 50, drawn on Col. Stewart, and several Memorandums; and a drab Purse, containing half a Sovereign, and 12s. By a Female about 28 years of age, rather tall, and speaks with an Irish accent.— Metropolitan Police office, August 20. Stolen, on the night of the 16th instant, from the Person ot William Kulback, while at the Fire in George- yard, a flat gold Geneva Watch, maker's name * Aubert,' mounted on four rubies, and ' W. K .,' in old English on the outside case.— Metropolitan Polict- office, August 19. Stolen, on the night of the 4th instant, from the Person of Thomas Jenkins, tram- plate layer, Aberdare, whilst in a state of intoxication between Dowlais iron- works and Aberdare, a silver Watch, maker's name ' William Butford, Liverpool, No. 2743;' also, four Sovereigns, and 15s. in silver.— Information to be given to the Superintendent of the Merthyr District of the Gla- : morgan Constabulary.— Bow- street, August 17. HOUSE- BREAKING. The three Men charged with breaking and entering the Dwelling- house of Mr. Phillips; at Birkby, on the 17th instant, and advertised in the ' Police Gazette ' of the 23rd instant, have been apprehended and the whole of the property recovered.— Bow- street, August 26. A Burglary was committed at Huddersfield, on the night of the 13th instant, and the following property taken away, viz.: a pair of ivory- hafted Carvers, ' Rogers, maker, Sheffield ;' a pair of pocket Pistols, with bright barrels, and the head of a Lion carved in German- silver on the butts of the Pistols; also, an Ameri- can pocket Pistol, with patent breech, containing five balls to fire five different shots without reloading.— All reasonable expenses will be paid on the recovery of the property and conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to John Dan- son, superintendent of police, Huddersfield.— Bow- street, August 22. On the morning of the 18th instant, about 11 o'clock, the Shop of William Dodd, provision dealer, Latchford, Cheshire, was feloniously broken and entered, by two Men of the following description : one 5 leet 7 or 8 inches high, very thin, and swarthy complexion; had on a blue body coat, dark moleskin trousers, and a new stuff hat. The other stands 5 feet 5 inches high, dark hair, and swarthy complexion ; dressed in blue a body coat, dark trousers, and aew stuff hat: one of them had a black eye.— Infor- mation to be given to James Irwin, special high constable, Ly mm, or to Michael Douglas, police- officer, Latchford, Warrington.— Bow- ttreet, August 21. On the morning of the 20th instant, the Dwelling- house of John Hughes, ot Dudgley Bank, in the parish of Church Suet- ton, jn the county of Salop, was feloniously and burglariously entered, and a silver Watch,' No. 59302,' maker's name ' Robt. Walker, London,' with a brown Ribbon, two brass Keys, and a common Seal with a man's Head engraved on it, stolen there- from. Supposed by a Tramp, of the following description : he is about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, stout made, dark whiskers, dressed in a fustian jacket and trousers much worn, black hat, boots laced up in front, and strong made.— Information to be given to Superintendent C. Lewis, Church Stretton, or at the Chief Constable's- office, Shrewsbury.— Bow- street, Aug. 21. On the night of the 13th instant, the Dwelling- house of Mr. John Oliver, at Castle Donnington, in the county of Leices- ter, was burglariously entered, and the following property stolen therein, viz.: a single- breasted blue Taglioni Coat; an invisible green Newmarket cut Coat, with gilt buttons, double- breasted; a blue satin Vest, pattern a yellow drooping Willow, with fancy buttons ; a pair of grey doeskin Trousers ; a black cleth Coat; a pair of blue and black checked Trousers; an old velveteen Coat; a youth's Jacket; three yards and a half of blue broad Cloth; a girl's Frock, and several small articles.— Information to be given to the Chief Constable of the Leicestershire Consta- bulary, Police- office, Leicester.— Bow- street, August 20. Early on the morning of the 16th instant, the Shop of Mrs. Shibbs, at Kegworth, in the county of Leicester, was bioken and entered, and the following property stolen therein, viz.: two dozen silver Thimbles ; three Combs, bone handles, with Ger- man- silver blades; a pair of stained- handled Razors; three silver Pencil- ceses; two dozen pocket Knives, with two and three blades in each, bucklurn handles ; and several gold Brooches and wedding Rings.— Information to be given to the Chief Constable of the Leicestershire Constabulary, Police- office, Leicester.— Bow- street, August 20. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen or strayed, early on the morning of the 20th instant, irom a Field near Burslem, the properly of Reuben Hall, aLighi Grey Horse Pony, about 11 hands high, a piece cut out of its left ear, and has a scar on the nea fore km'e.— Whoever will apprehend or give such information as shall lead to thedis< ove> y ol the offender or offenders, shall, on conviction and recovery of the Pony, receive £ l Reward, on application to Superintendent Rowley, Burslem, Staffordshire Potteries,— Bow- street, August \ 26. I Stolen or strayed, on the night of the 20th instant, from the parish of Weeting with- Broome- hill, a Dark Chesnut Marc, I light hackney breed, 6 years old, 14 hands high, knees slightly broken, dull eyes, stands across the fore legs, and had feather- edge shoes on the fore feet; the property of Mr. Sainty.— In- formation to be given to J. Hubbard, superintendent of police, at Stoke Ferry, Norfolk.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen, on the night of the 22nd instant, or early the follow- ing morning, an aged Black Mare Pony, the property of Mr. John Beagles, butcher, of Whaplode, from a Field n Whaplode Drove. She is about 14 hands high, the off ear slit and turned at the ( end, the last rib but one on the near side broken.— Any e rson giving such information that the offender or offenders may e convicted shall receive Two Sovereigns Reward.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen, on the night of the 19th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, from a Close in the occupation of Mr. Benjamin Brown, of Horncastle, a Light Bay Hackney Mare, 5 years old, stands about 15 hands 2 inches high, having no white upon her, a plain head, good action, shows a good deal of blood, carries her tail well off when going, and is rather tanned in her coat. Also, a Bay Gig Horse, 6 years old, stands about 15 hands 2 inches high, switch tail, long mane, three black legs, the near hind leg being white up to tht fetlock, head well up, marked on the chine with the saddle, hair off the mane, has an enlargm ent on his off fore leg, high action, and is light in his mouth. Two Men, one acting as master, the other as servant, were seen on the 20th instant, at the ' Peacock Inn,' Croxton, Leicestershire, with four Horses, two of which exactly answered the description of the above. The third was a Bay Horse, and the fourth a Dark Brown Pony. They were afterwards seen on the same day, about three miles from Melton Mowbray, going towards Oakham. The Master is a slight man, weighing about eight or nine stone, dark brown whiskers, stands about 5 feet 4 inches high, and appears to be from 25 to 30 years of age; was dressed in a green coat with velvet collar, shabby and stitched, trousers of dark tweed, two handkerchiefs round his neck, one loose over the other, and the top one yellow and white. The Servant is about 35 years of age, very much scarred, and red round the movth, appears to be a west countryman, and stands 5 feet 8 inches high ; was dressed in a dark grey tweed Taglioni coat out at one elbow, breeches, leggins, half boots to meet, and an old bald hat— Whoever will giva such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Guineas, from the Treasurer of the Horncastle New Association, and a further Reward of Ten Guineas from the said Benjamin Brown— Bow- street, Au- gust 26. Stolen, on the night of the 23rd instant, or early the follow- ing morning, from a Stable at Wigmore, belonging to Mr. Thos. Jones, a Brown 3- year old Hack Horse Colt, about 16 hands high, with no shoes oq, and blistered on the two hind hocks, with a long t* il cut at the end, and has a litte white on the two hind feet.— Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive £ 10 Re- ward, on application to Mr. Thomas Jones of the above place. Information to be given to John Richardson, superintendent of police, Leintwardine, Herefordshire.— Bow- street, August 26. Stolen or strayed off the Hackney Marsh, two or three days since, a Black Pony, between 13 and 14 hands high, with switch tail, very grey- headed, especially over the eyes, thick legged, and scratched on the fore legs, having been down sometime ago.— Information to be given to G. Morrice, upholsterer, Upper Clap- ton.— Bow- strect, Ai. gust 26. Stolen, on the night of the 22nd iusfant, or early the follow- ing morning, from Newton Mead, parish of Newton- St.- Loe, So- merset, ten Wether Sheep ( two- tooths), of the Leicester and Cots- wold breed, with a large ruddle- mark ( a cross) on the back ; the property of Mrs. Ann Spencer.—£ 10 Reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders. Information to be given to W. Hall, chief officer, Guildhall, Bath.— Boio- street, August Stolen, on the night of the 22nd instant, or early the follow- ing morning, from the Stable of the Rev. J. B. Doveton, in the parish of Saltford, in the county of Somerset, near Bath, a Dark Brown Mare about 16 hands high, aged, cut tail, black legs, small piece cut out of near ear close to the head, and three saddle- marks on the back.— Information to be given to W. P. Hall, chief officer, Guildhall, Bath.— Bow- street, August 24. Stolen, on the night of the 22nd instant, from Mr. Males, of Sarratt, Herts, a Black Gelding Pony, 6 years old, 13 hands 1 inch high, star on the forehead, tail hangs down to the hocks, two sore places on the witheis from the pressure of the saddle, black legs, large head, and is rather dull in appearance.—£ 5 Reward will be paid on recovery of the same and conviction of the offender or offenders, on application to E. S. Evans, inspec- tor, Watford, Herts.— Bow- street, Aug. 24. The Black Mare Pony advertised in the ' Police Gazette' of the 12th instant, as having been stolen from Ettiley Heath, near ^ andbach, Cheshire, has been recovered.— Boio- strcet, August 23. Stolen or strayed, from the parish of Liltle Snaring, in the county of Norfolk, on the night of the 18ih instar. t, a Light Geld- ing Ass, 5 years old, has a scar on one knee which has been cut by a scythe, and a low place in its forehead.— Information to be given to William Gardener, inspector of police, Fakenham, Nor- folk.— Bow- street, August 23. Stolen, on the night of the 20th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, from a Close situate at High Tointon, in the occu- pation of Mrs. Elizabeth Richardson, a Dark Bay Hackney Mare, 5 years old, about 15 J hands high, has a peculiar lump about the size of a pigeon's egg on her near cambrel, long switch tail, stiff action, foie legs rather crooked, turns her toes inw. « rds, has a high back, is in low condition, very plain, carrying her tail roundly, thin in the neck, no mark or star in the forehead, and cannot travel far without perceptible lameness.— Whoever w^ ll give such information as will lead to the apprehension air 3336 POLICE GAZE August 26. viction of the offender or offenders, shall receive a Reward of Seven Guineas from the Treasurer of the Horncastle New Asso- ciation for the Prosecution of Felons and a further Reward of Five Guineas from the said Elizabeth Richardson.— Bow- slreet, August 23. Stolen, on the 10th instant, from Letown, in the parish of Sampford Spinney, Devon, a Black Horse, black legs, 15 hands high, white star in the forehead, and small grab eyes ; the pro- perty of Mr. Waller Mashford.— Whoever will give such infor- mation as will lead to the apprehension of the offender and re- covery of the Horse, Shall, receive £ 2 Reward.— Bow- street Au- gust 22. Stolen, from Croesuewedd- near Wrexham, in the county of Denbigh, on the night of the 18th instant, a Bay Cart Horse, 6 years old, about 16 hands htc> h,> witli black mnne and tail, two mute feet behind, and a small white streak down the forehead. — Any person who will give such information as will lead to the apprehensipn and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive a Reward of Seven Guineas, on application to Mr. John Bennion, of Wrexham, tho solicitor to the Wrexham Association for the Prosecution of Felons. Information to be given either to Mr. Bennion, or to Richard Edwards, inspector of police, Wrexham.— Bony- street, August 23. Stolen or strayed, from Christchurch, on or about the 10th Ultimo, a Red Stock Heifer, marked ' J. R.' on the horn, rather hollow- backed, and a scissor- mark on the near pin.— Information to be given to Joseph Morley, superintendent of Hants county police.— Bow- street, August 22. Stolen On. the night of the 17th instant, from a Field in the parish of Walkhampton, Devon. a Light Bay Mare, the property of Mr.. John. Creber.. 55he is abo. pt 14 . J . hands high, 5 years old., has a little White in her two hind feet and one fore foot, white star in. the forehead. a white diamond between the nostrils, short black tail cut square, and black mane she has a colt unweaned, which . was left behind. Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender cr offenders, or the recovery of the Mare, shall receive .£ 2 Reward. Information to be given to the said Mr. John Creber. at Horse- yeat, Horrabridge, near TaVistock.— Bow- street. August 22. Found in Odiham, Hants, supposed to have been stolen, a Grey Mate, about 13 hands high, aged, with u scar Oil each knee, marked ' IV on the near shoulder, and ' H. ' on the . off one.— Information to be given to Thomas Campbell, superintendent, Hants couuty police, () diham-— Bow- strect, August 22. Stolnp or strayed on the 15tb instant, from Abersychan, near Pontypool, a Dark Bay Pony Mare, about 13 hands high. 7 years old, some white on one of the hind legs, and the letter' H burnt on the near thigh.— If stolen, £ 2 Reward will be paid on convic- tion of the. offender or offenders; and if strayed, all reasonable / Expenses - will be paid upon her recovery. Information to be given to Mr. William Broughall, British Lion Hotel,' Abersychan. -- Bow- street, August 21. Sto1en or strayed, from the Forest of Wychwood, on the night of the l5th instant, a Park Grey Cart Horse, about 8 years o'd, four black legs, black head, long black tail, grey mane, the tinder jaw short, and the lower teeth shutting against the roof of The mouth; the property of James Lanchbury, of Ramsden. — If stolen, whoever will give such informaton as may lead to the ap- prehension and conviction of the offender or offenders, shall re- ceive £ 2 Reward, on Application to the said James Lanchbury ; if strayed' any person restoring the same shall be' rewarded for their trouble, and have all reasonable expenses paid. — Bow- street, August 21. i i Found, supposed to haVe been stolen, in the parish of Rud- dington. Notts, a short- homed Roan Cow.— Information to be given to Superintendent Whitworth, Sneiriton, or to Inspector Dixon, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire constabulary.— Bow- street, August. i Left at the House of Mr. John Alsop, of the Grange, near Newport, a Black Horse, supposed to be stolen : he is about 15 hands high, has a long tail, appears to be from 3 to 4 years old, saddle- marked on the near side, slightly so on the offside, and has a very small star in the forehead.— Information to be given to — Richards, county constabulary, Newport, Salop — Bow street, August 12. Stolen, from Curdon Farm, Stogumber, Somerset, on the night of the 17th instant, or early the following morning, a fine, strong, well- actioned Bay Cart Horse, aged, about 16 hands high, short switch tail, clean lees, the off foot behind white at the fetlock, the off hoof before having a sand crack in it, both fore feet shed with bar shoes, a small white spot in the forehead, and has a defect in one of the eyelids, it having been partly cut off when young—£ 5 Reward will be paid, if stolen, or. convic- tion of the offender, on application to Mr. R. Pain, Stogumber. — Bow- street, August 21. Stojen or strayed., on the morning of the 19th instant, from Habes Hall, Wednesbury, the property of Thomaa Bailey, a Bay Horse, about 14 years old, ?> hands high, short cut black tail, a while spot or star on the front of the head, lamp with the left hind leg, has a little while on the same leg. and i? blind with the left eye.— Information to be given to P. C. No 66, Davis. Wednesbury Police- station, Staffordshire.— Bow- street, August 2if . : Description of a Man who left the Black Mare described in the ' Police Gazette' of the 7th inst., as stolen from Mr. Wood- man, Stanbridge, Bedfordshire, at the ' Jolly Gardeners' public- house, Isleworth, on the morning of the 3rd instant: a Gipsy; 30 years of age, 5 feet C inches high, dark complexion, and large black whiskers; dressed in a figured velveteen shooting- jacket, dark cord breeches, light cord gaiters, laced shoes, and black hat.— Bow- street, August 21. Left at the' Oxford Arms Inn,' in the parish of Beguildy, in the county of Radnor, on the 7th instant, a Black Gelding Pony, supposed to have been stolen., he is about 12 hands high, 4 years old, long mane and tail, star on the forehead, a little white on point of nose, one silver eye, and a lump on the near side of the head in the shape of a sugar- loaf.— Information to be given to Henry Verdon, superintendent of police, Knighton, Radnorshire.— Bow- street, August 20. Stolen, from a Field at Litton- lane- end, the property of Mr, Francis Bramwell, near Tideswell, Derbyshire, on the night of ihe 12th instant, a Dark Brown Mare, 7 years old, about 15 hands high a blemish on the far shoulder, a blaze in the face, a little white on one foot; Supposed to be in the vicinity of Sheffield — Information to be given to Mr. Branwell of Little- lane- end, neat Tideswell aforesaid.— Bow- street, August 19, LARCENY AND EMBEZZLEMENT. Stolen, on the night of the 17th instant, at Harting, near Petersfield, a White Setter Dog ( with the exception of a small spot of lemon colour on the loin, and lemon- coloured ears), both ears have been sore on the upper side ; it answers to the name of ' Fop.'— Whoever will restore the said Dog to the owner, Mr. Robert Chase, of Harting, will be handsomely rewarded, and on conviction of the offender, shall receive £ 5 Reward.— Bow- street, August 22. Stolen, from Mr. James George, farmer, of Cran Moss, in th. e parish of St. Andrew, on the night of the 8th Instant, or early the following morning, a fir- wood box Cart, with lurch shafts, bex and shafts painted red; one of the wheels has got new felloes not painted ; the axle has been laid or mended opposite one of the garrow holes; the box of the axle has once been hooped round with iron before it was painted, the iron was taken off and the mark is still visible. Also, a set of Harness; the bridle of single leather with common bits, and each of the blinks have got a piece of tin or lead in imitation of a cockle- shell; there has been two pieces of old leather sewed onjto the blinks to make them stiff. The collar has been newly covered, and a piece of new leather, opposite the draught, to prevent the collar from cutting The hames are, of elm wood strapped with iron lialf- way up and not painted.
