POLICE OR, HUE PublisfocTi 1) 8 GAZETTE; AND CRY. Hs flutfiontjj. No. 648.] WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 1834. Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cafes of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escapeef from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessoi ies, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity as can ie given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. As no charge is made for the insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Property in the Po/ irc Gazette and Hue and, Cry, all Let- ters addressed to the Editvr upon that subject, are requested to be post- paid, otherwise the insertion requested will not take place. MURDER, ARB MALICIOUSLY SHOOTING- OB. STABBING- Whitehall, March. 18th, 1834. Whereas it hath beeff . umbly represented unto the King, That, on the evening of the lotli day of March instant, Mr. Francis James Rens, of Stow- on- the- Wold, in the county of Gloucester, was barbarously Murdered, by some evil- disposed person or persons unknown ; . His Majesty, for the better apprehending Mid bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Murder before mentioned, " is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any, one of them ( except the actual perpetrator thereof) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he she or they may be apprehended and convicted thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of Two Hundred Pounds is hereby offered to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he she MORRIS ROSENBERG stand? charged with having com- mitted Forgery, in Dublin, on Monday, the 10th ultimo ; and received, by a Post- bill, £ 519. 17s. 10d., dated February 20th, which he got exchanged at the Branch Bank of England in Li- verpool, for the following Notes, which are stopped in London, viz.— Two for £ 100 each, dated 9th Nov. 1833, Nos. 16391 and l< i:; 92; six for £ 50 each, dated titirMav 4833, Nos. 2516 to and £ 19. 17s. lOd. in Cash.— The said MORRIS RO- SENBERG is from Breslau, on the Prussian Frontier; about forty- three years of age, sandy whisfcers, light hair, ruddy com- o'. txion, about five feet eight inches high, sto\ it made, and steady looking; wore a dark browji or olive frock coat, and ba'I with him a green carpet bag, and an old- fashioned silver winch ; he understands the watch trade, speaks English very niMjerfectly, and was last heard of in Liverpool on the 11th inst. — information to be given to Mr. Theobalds, City Marshal, at tht Police Office, Guildhall, London. —£ 100 of such reward to be paid by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury; and £ 100 by Mr. John D. Charles, of Stow- on- the- Wold. MELBOURNE. Absconded, PETER HIGGINS, late of Wigan, in the county of Lancaster, who stands charged, upon the Coroner's Inquest, with killing and slaying Richard Rylance, at Wigan, on Friday, the 14th ultimo.— He travels the country with a basket, is a native of Ireland, five feet eight or nine inches high, much marked with the small- pox, high cheek- bones, stout made, about thirty years of age, dark brown hair, and is a suspicious looking character ; he had on a blue cloth coat and white fur cap.— Information to be given to Mr. Thomas Green- shaw, Town Clerk, Wigan. Whitehall, February 28th, 1834. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, about half- past six o'clock in the evening of Wednesday, the 26th day of February instant, Mr. John Richardson, Bailiff to J. Perkins, Esq., of Pendhiil, near Bletchingley, in the county of Surrey, was inhumanly Murdered, between Epsom and Banstead, on his return from Epsom Market, and robbed • of Cash and Bank of England Notes to the amount of about £ 20 or £ 30; His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Murder before mentioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of thcin ( except the person who actually committed the same) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he she or they may be apprehended and con- victed thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hundred Pounds is hereby offered by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, and an additional Reward of One Hundred Pounds by the said John Perkins, Esq., to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he she or they may be appre- hended and convicted of the said offence. MELBOURNE. FORGERY. Absconded, on Monday, the 10th ultimo, from the service of W. D. Scott, No. 28, Hanover- street, Edinburgh, GEORGE WILSON, who is charged with Forgery and also with embez- zling various sums of Money received on his employer's account. — lie is about twenty- three years of age, five deet six inches high, brown hair, slender made, fair complexion, thin face, dark eyes, no whiskers, sharp nose, ordinary mouth, bushy eyebrows meeting above the eyes, delicate looking, rather vulgar in ap- pearance, and speaks in a south country accent: he resided at No. 22, Middle Arthur- place.— Information to be given to the Superintendent of Police, Edinburgh. R 9BB22B.- S- FROM THS PERSON. On Monday night, the 31st ultimo, as Mr. Jabez Soans, of Wendover, was returning home iron Tring fair, he was attacked by j.. iir men near Weston Turvile, who pulled him off his I .1 threat luu » into- a Uiu- fc*. aiul otherwise ill- treated him, and rode away with his Horse. The Horse is a black colour, about fourteen hands high, rising five years old. In- formation to be given to Wm. Cross, High Constable, Ayles- bury. / HOUSE- BREAKING. On Tuesday morning, the 25th of February last, the Shop of Mr. Nathan Franks, Watchmaker and Jeweller, situated near the Cross, in the Town of Kinross, was broken and entered, and thirty- five Silver Watches, a Gold Watch, a great quantity of Jewellery, consisting of Gold Ear- rings, Bracelets, Clasps, Watch Keys, and also a quantity of Silver Spoons, and various other articles, and Watchmaker's Working Tools, Stolen there- from ; the' Shop afterwards was wilfully Set on Fire, and partially consumed.— The numbers and description of several of the Watches are as follows, viz.:— a single- cased Gold Watch, wound on the face, chapters, oval pendent, jewelled, with the banking pin below, balance acting on the slide; a close- cased Hunting Watch, maker's name ' Eaton, London,' No. 9056 ; a horizontal Watch, engraved round out case bazel,' John Mailler, Mer- chant, Edinr,' in pinchbeck cases, maker's namej' Turnbull and Aitchison, Edinr.,' No. 327; a Silver Watch, marked on the dial, instead of chapters or letters for hours, ' J. O. H. N. J. P. E. A. R. S. O. N.,' marked also in small letters, on front of dial, ' Road Surveyor'; a double- cased Silver Watch, no name, No. 3927; a double- cased Silver Watch, maker's name' J. Malton, London,' No. 5560; a Silver Watch, maker's name ' Curtis, London,' No. 480; a Silver Watch, maker's name ' Scotland Coutts, London,' No. 1883.— Any person giving such informa- tion as will lead to the recovery of the property, or the discovery of the offender or offenders, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Pounds, on application to William Thompson, Procurator Fiscal of Kinrosshire. On Thursday night, the 27th ultimo, the Clerk's Office of the Royal Cadet Academy, at Woolwich, was entered through the window, and a quantity of Mathematical Instruments were stolen therefrom. They were marked with the following Names, vie.— Charles Balfour, Richard Crofton, James Gosset, William Menzies, Thomas Harnett, Murray Nixon, George Shakespear, Walter Wade, Charles Lewis, John Bredin, Horace Alston, Alexander Anderson, Robert Laffan, Robert Torrens, and Edward Keane.— Information to be given to Mr. Samuel Noble, high constable, Woolwich. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen, from the Servant of Mr. Dagenham, of Essex, whilst near Chigwell- row, a Grey Horse, about fourteen or fifteen hands high; with Saddle ? ud Bridle.— By three Men, dressed h smock- frocks. Stolen, on Friday night, the 28th ultimo, from a Stable, at Edgton, a Black Wagon Mare, with a long switch tail, about fifteen hands high, rising five years old, marked with a long narrow white stripe from the forehead down her face, a mark from a cut on the left side of her nose, one tooth out on the left side of her mouth, and a black tooth next the vacancy thus made, and which is opposite to the cut before mentioned ; and she has one white hooflock on the hind leg. Also, an old Sad- dle, and a double- rein Bridle with a rusty bit: the saddle has a new patch on the pummel, and the one long flap has had a slit up the middle which has been sewn up; the stirrup- leathers are marked ' C. L.' near the buckles ; and the bridle is also marked fC. L.' near the buckle on the head.— Five Pounds Reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders, by ap- plying to Mrs. Mary Cotney, the owner, at Edgton. Stolen or Strayed, on Thursday morning, the 27th ultimo, from a Straw- yard, at Paul's Cray, Kent, in company with two Ponies ( one Bay and the other Black), a Bay Gelding, six years old, and fifteen hands three inches high.— If strayed, whoever will bring the same to Mr. Edmonds, Seven Stars Inn, Foot's Cray, or to Mr. Massey, Black Horse, Sedcup, shall receive a Reward of Three Pounds ; and if stolen, the like Reward will be paid on conviction of the offender or offenders. Jff the night of Thlireffa^, the 20th ultlmSJ? the stable of Mr. Thomas Barnett, butcher, Ironbridge, Salop, was broken open, and a bay Mare, aged, stolen therefrom ; she is about fourteen hands and a half high, with a switch tail, has a small white star on her forehead, and a little off the right eye, marked on the chine, and also on both knees. Whoever will give such in- formation as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders shall receive a Reward of Five Pounds from the said Mr. Barnett, or Mr. Walter, Ironbridge. A Saddle and Bridle, together with a baragan Shooting- jacket, which is stained with blue down the back, were also stolen from the same premises. On the night of the 26th ultimo, a person who calls himself EDWARD ALDERSON, of Middleton Tires, about five miles from Richmond, in Yorkshire, is detained at Derby, having in his possession a brown Blare, of the hack kind, aged, about fifteen hands high, docked tail, a blaze in the face, saddle- marked, off fore foot white, the near hind foot white, and a wen at the back of the off fore leg, and a white mark on her nose : supposed to be stolen. The said EDWARD ALDERSON is nineteen years of age, light complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, about five feet seven inches high, dressed in a brown dress coat, double- breasted dark- coloured waistcoat, cassimere small- clothes, light brown stockings, and ankle boots. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 25th ultimo, from a by- Lane in the parish of Bearly, near Stratford- on- Avon, in the county of Warwick, a Black Gelding Pony, aged, about eleven, hands high, marked with ' H ' on the thigh ol the near hind leg, and blemished on the off hind leg. Two men wearing white frocks were seen on the road leading from Birmingham to Oxford with a Pony answering the description. Any person giving informa- tion to John Ashfield, Stratford- on- Avon, aforesaid, that will lead to conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive One Guinea Reward, from Mr. J. Harris, of Bearly, aforesaid. Stolen or Strayed, on Thursday night, the 20th ultimo, from Clay Hill, Enfield, a Bright Bay Mare, fifteen hands high, and a scar on the off flank. Also, a Roan Flemish Mare, about fifteen hands high, and a scar on the near hock.— Whoever will give information that may lead to the recovery of the said Mares, if strayed, will be rewarded and all reasonable expenses paid, by applying to Robert Dickinson, the owner, Forty Hill, Enfield. If stolen, the offender or offenders will be prosecuted. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 26th ultimo, or early the following morning, from a Stable, belonging to Mr. Peter Caffin, at Crossway's Farm, in the parish of Worth, Sussex, a Brown Cart Gelding, aged, a white star in the forehead, the hair is a little defective on the shoulder by a surfeit, and about fourteen haqds high.— Ten Guineas Reward will be paid by the said Mr. Caffin, on conviction of the offender or offenders; in addition to Five Guineas to be paid by the Crawley Prosecuting Society. 2494 POLICE GAZETTE; Oi l , H U E A N D CRY. 2495 Stolen or Strayed, on or about the 15th ult., from off Hainault Forest near to Chigwell- row, a Brown Mare, about fourteen hands and a half high, black legs, the off eye blind, has had a wound on the point of the off shoulder which may be felt, has a switch tail, a few saddle marks, is about ten years old, without shoes, and has been branded on the hoofs ' A. T.', which may have become nearly worn out.— Also a Bay Geld- ing, rising four years old, fourteen hands high, with blacft legs, free from white, a square long tail, without shoes, and has been branded on the hoots ' A. T., which may have become nearly worn out, is very quiet, but has not been broken in. The pro- perty of Mr. Arthur Thurgood, Surgeon, JSsc., Chigwell- row, . Essex.— If stolen, Five Guineas ltewar& will be paid on con- viction of the offender or offenders; if strayed, Two Guineas will be paid on recovery of the Horses. Stolen, on the 16th ultimo, from a Field belonging to Mr. John Stevens, near Bow Bridge, an aged Chesnut Ilorse, about twelve or thirteen hands high, has a spavin on the off- leg, a white spot or saddle mark upon the back, and a short tail. The property of Israel Israel, of New- court, Wentworth- street, Whitechapel.— Information to be given at Lambeth- street Office. Stolen or Strayed, on Tuesday night, the 18th ultimo, about ten o'clock, from Mornington- place, Hampstead- road, a Horse , and Cart, from which two men were unloading goods. The Horse is black, with a long tail, black fore feet, white hind feet, and a blaze down the forehead.- rThe property of George and Francis Coombs, No. 15, King- street, Golden- square. Stolen or Strayed, on Wednesday night, the 19th ultimo, or early the following morning, from a Close, on the Spinny Hills, | a Dark Iron- grey Pony, rising four years old, switch tail, about fourteen lianas high, a white mark on the back, and without shoes.— If stolen, Five Guineas Reward will be paid on convic- tion of the offender or offenders, and if strayed, whoever will restore the said pony shall be rewarded, by applying to Mr. Wheatley, Leicester. Absconded, from the service of Thomas Burt, No. 24, Lower Rosoman- street, Clerkenwell, JOHN THOMAS, having ob- tained several sums of Money, under false pretences.— He is about nineteen years of age, five feet seven inches high, dressed in a blue coat and drab trousers, and appears very shabby: he is supposed to have gone to Greenwich. LARCENY. Absconded, from his master, Mr. Davidson, Surgeon, No. C, Craven- street, Strand, ALEXANDER ALLAN, stealing and taking with him a full suit of Lively, viz.— A green surtout Coat and Trousers, yellow stripe Waistcoat, and black Hat; all new.— He is about fourteen years of age, five feet high, of fair complexion and ruddy; he is supposed to be in the neighbour- hood of Clerkenwell. FRAUDS AHD AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS. On Monday evening, the 17th ultimo, two Boys obtained from the Rugby and Leicester Coachman, at Rugby, by false pretences, a Parcel, packed in brown paper, and directed to ' Mr. Mercer, Bookseller, Nottingham,' containing a £ 5 Rugby Bank Note, £ 5 in gold ; and Books, of the value of £ 5, consisting of Key to Burkit's Testament in sheets, a Prayer- book, and various others— One of the Boys is named WILLIAM WARNER, fifteen years of age, about five feet high, stout, fresh coloured, short stiff neck, and had on a blue lapellcd coat, blue waistcoat, black trousers, half- boots, and shirt marked ' T. MISCELLANEOUS InfORMATIOnS Escaped, from the County Gaol at Bedford, on Sunday morn- ing, the 30th ultimo, JOHN EMMERTON, twenty- four years of age, five feet nine inches high, brdwn hair, grey eyes, pale complexion, and a native of Leighton- Buzzard, Bedfordshire ; had on, when he escaped, an old waistcoat with sleeves, old cor- duroy trousers, old shoes cut in slits to give ease to his toes, and an old black hat; he has been severely flogged and drummed out from the Woolwich Division of Marines, for thieving and other improper conduct. He was convicted of felony, at the Lent Assizes 1833, and sentenced to imprisonment and hard labour for one year, from which he was discharged on the 2nd instant, and committed again on the 10th, charged with sacri- lege and house- breaking, from which charges he has now es- caped.— Whoever will apprehend or cause to be apprehended the said JOHN EMMERTON, and lodge him in any of His Majesty's Gaols, shall receive Ten Pounds Reward, on applica- tion to Thomas Warner," Keeper of the County Gaol, Bedford. Escaped, on Saturday morning, the 22( 1 ultimo, about half- past four o'clock, during a dense fog, from off the Bristol Coach, whtn about two miles on the London side of Slough, in Bucks, WILLIAM PHILLIPS, who was being conveyed to the hulks at W oolwich.— He is a native of Langham, in Pembrokeshire ; is twenty- severryears of age, five feet seven inches and a quarter high, of swarthy complexion, heavy down- looking countenance, high cheek- bones, dark brown hair which rather curls on the sides, dark sandy whiskers, has an inflammation in his eyes, which are small and dark and appear sore, and a full visage ; a Mermaid inside of right arm and an Anchor inside of left arm— each marked below the elbow- joint: was convicted at Cardiff", in February last, and sentenced to transportation for life. He broke his irons by which he was fastened to another prisoner, but had a basil remaining on his leg with two square rivets ; had on a black hat and black cravat, light- colour striped waistcoat, light fustian jacket, dark trousers, and low shoes, lie was immediately pursued by one of the keepers, but escaped from the very dense fog at the time.— Five Pounds Reward will be paid on his apprehension. Russell, viz.— A Jack Plane, a Smoothing ditto, a Sash ditto, a Plough, a Stock and sundry Bits, six Chisels of various sizes, a mortice Gouge, and two single ditto; all marked on the handles ' G. Russell.' Also one Axe and an old fustian Jacket. — Information to be given at the Police- station Hampstcad. Lost, supposed to have been Stolen, about the 25th of February last, a bunch of Seals, as follows— one white cornelian i Seal, set in fine gold, open old- fashioned setting, engraved , ' Caroline '; one amethyst, solid set, modern pattern, not en-! graved ; one small red cornelian, handsomely set, engraved in old English letters ' Tiens ta Foy '; one imitation amethyst, set in mock gold, engraved ' C. E. S. N.': one gold pivot Watch- key, and a small gilt A.' bum- key. Also stolen some time ago,: a very large red cornelian gold Seal,— arms, Manch with bar dexter and half- moon— crest, a Blackamoor's head— motto, 1 ' Avi numerantur avoium.'— Information to be given at Lam- j beth- street Office. Stolen, from the Ship ' Amanda,' in the London Docks, lis., the monies of Christian Nicolans Landwehr. Stolen, on Saturday evening, the 29th ultimo, about five o'clock, from the Shop Door of Mr. Smellie, Pawnbroker, No. 1, Clarendon- square, Some rs- town, a Bundle of Gowns, about twenty- five, of different patterns, with pawnbroker's pri- vate marks on them, ' U 1' and ' C| R.'— By a Man about five feet five inches high, and dressed in a shabby black coat and trousers. Stolen, on Sunday afternoon, the 23d ultimo, between two and three o'clock, from the House of Mr. Wilton, No. 77, Red Lion- street, Holborn, the following articles, viz.— A plain silver Watch, with a Ke^ and a gold Seal attached by a dark ribbon ; three silver Tea- spoons marked « T. M. W.', and a ditto Table- spoon'T. S. W.' Stolen, between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, the 21st and 22d ultimo, from die House of Mr. Lazarus, No. 4, Back- road, Shadwell, the following articles, viz.— Three Shirts marked ' H. L.', a black frock Coat with velvet collar, a ditto Waistcoat, a pair of black Trousers, an olive Coat with velvet collar, two reams of post and a quantity of foolscap Paper. X .
