Containing the Substance o f all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Hoises, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. Fifty Pounds Reward will be paid to any person giving such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, by applying to Mr. H. Gaskell, Solicitor, Wigan. As no charge is made for the insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Property in the Police Gazette and Hue and Cry, all Letters addressed to the Editor upon that subject, are requested to be post- paid, otherwise the insertion requested will not take place. MURDER, AND MALICIOUSLY SHOOTING OR STABBING On Monday, the 2nd instant, Thomas Tedds, late of Astley, in the county of Warwick, labourer, was found Dead, in his House, having been barbarously Murdered ; and his Cottage robbed of a blue Coat, a pair of dark cord Breeches, four Shirts, and other articles.— JOHN DEWIS, commonly called BAGGY, of Bedworth, in the said county of Warwick, collier, is strongly suspected of having committed the said murder and robbery, or assisted therein.— He is about five feet ten or eleven inches high, strongly marked with the small- pox, has prominent teeth, and when last seen had on a long blue coat, light coloured broad cord breeches, and strong nailed shoes.— W hoever will apprehend the said JOHN DEWIS, and bring him or send in- formation to the Parish Officers of Astley, aforesaid, or to Mr. Joseph Haddon, constable, of Nuneaton, shall be rewarded and all reasonable expenses paid.— By Order of the Parish Officers of Astley, John Craddock, their Solicitor. On Sunday night, the 3rd ultimo, about a quarter past twelve o'clock, a Police Constable of the K Division, was, without any provocation, stabbed under the right eye and left arm with a knife, whilst on duty, by a man named JOHN SULLIVAN, who has been in custody of the Police several times: he is about five feet five inches high, stout made, twenty years of age, full face, fair complexion, dressed in a fustian jacket, straw hat, and white duck trousers. He has since left his lodgings.— Informa- tion to be given at the Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, or at the Police Station, Mile End Road. On Wednesday, the 30th Oct., a Man and Woman, travel- lers, who are supposed to be still in the county of Kent, bar- barously assaulted, with intent to murder, Sarah Whatiey ( a poor woman, sixty- four years of age, who keeps a beer- shop in Bearsted parish), with two pokers, one of which was broken and the other bent by the blows which they inflicted, chiefly on her head, so that at present there are but faint hopes of her re- covery. They robbed her of Eighteen Shillings and a bad F'ive- shilling- piece, which Mrs. Whatley thinks she took of them a few days previous.— The Man is nearly thirty years of age, about five feet eight inches high, of dark complexion, very dark hair and eyes, and dark pointed whiskers ; he had on a short fustian gaberdine, blue trousers, ancle- jack shoes, and a black hat. The Woman is about forty years of age, and of robust appearance ; she wore a dark straw bonnet and dirty light cot- ton gown. They had two small bundles, one of which was in a common black handkerchief: the man left a willow stick with- out the rind in the house.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the apprehension of the offenders, shall, upon their conviction, receive Fifty Pounds Reward.— Information to be addressed to T. D. Jones, constable, Maidstone. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, that on the night of Monday, the 4th of November, instant, a Rick of Straw, standing in the farm- yard of Mr. Samuel Bal- lard Pickett, at Wroughton, near Swindon, in the county of Wilts, was feloniously " and maliciously set on fire by some per- son or persons unknown ; and that a Bani, Stable, and other Outbuildings, together with about ninety sacks of Wheat in the Barn, two Wheat- ricks, a Bean- rick, a hay- rick, and two ricks of Straw, besides other properly of less value, were there- by totally destroyed ; His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in setting fire to the said property hath been pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person who actually set fire to the same) who shall discover and give evidence against his accomplice or accomplices therein, so that he she or they may be appre- hended and convicted thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hun dred Pounds will be given to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the actual offender or offenders, so that he she or they may be apprehended and convicted of the said offence. Fifty Pounds of such Reward will be paid by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, and the remaining Fifty Pounds by the said Samuel Ballard Pickett. Information to be given at the offices of Messrs. Bradford and Burt, Solicitors, Swindon, Wilts. HOUSE- BREAKING. On Saturday night, the 7th instant, the House of Mr. Steil, No. 15, Russell- place, Fitzroy- square, was entered, and the fol- lowing articles were Stolen therefrom, viz.— A variety of silk Handkerchiefs; a very large blue cloth Cloak, faced with black fur, and black fur collar; a black frock Coat, collar and facings of black velvet, quite new ; two black ditto with black velvet collars, a black cloth dress Coat, a black beaver Hat nearly new, a silver Tea- spoon, and a red leather Purse containing 17s. Gd. in silver.— An old hat, a worsted comforter, a cotton red and white pocket handkerchief marked ' J. D.', three pieces of can- dles, and a phosphorus- match, were left behind. 2366 POLICE GAZETTE; Oil, HUE AND CRY. 2495 On Thursday night, the 5th instant, or early the following morning, the House of Mis. Higgs, 38, Foregate- street, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen there- from :— viz. A gentleman's blue cloth cloak, with a cape, fur collar, lined throughout with black and white plaid, with silk tassels; a brown silk umbrella, with ivory handle ; five table- spoons, marked W. M. H.; two ditto, one marked A. H. and one marked T. G.; eight tea- spoons, six marked W. M. H. and two B.; four salt- spoons; one mustard- pot and spoon ; two silver thimbles, one marked A. H.; four table- cloths ; a set of mathematical instruments, in mahogany box, French polished, inlaid with brass, with the name, Samuel Hemming, written in old English letter; a box of surgical instruments, highly finished, with mother- of- pearl handles, and the name of Revel on them ; the box is inlaid with brass ; one large crim- son shawl, broad bordered; one green ditto, with narrow bor- der ; one lavender ditto, without border; one pair of specta- cles ; one pair of stockings, marked P.; one ditto, marked No. 3 ; one ditto, not marked.— A young man, whose name is THOMAS HILLIMER, alias Benson, is suspected to be con- cerned in the above robbery. He is about the middle stature, and when last seen wore corduroy trowsers, round waistcoat, with sleeves, and a brown or blue top coat, with a large turned- down collar. He is supposed to be gone to Birmingham. A Reward of Five Guineas will be paid on conviction of the of- fender or offenders, by applying to Joseph Orchard, Police Officer. Stolen, on Saturday evening, the 7th instant, between five and six o'clock, from the House of Mr. Pike, the ' Nag's Head ' Public- house, High- street, Islington, the following articles, viz. — A silver Fish- slice; two Tureen- ladles, marked ' C.'; two Table- spoons and two pair of Sugar- tongs, ' J. M;. P.'; eight Tea- spoons; seven Salt- spoons, marked ' P.'; two Table- spoons ; two Punch- ladles— one with a Foreign coin at the bottom ; a plated Bread- basket, a Toast- rack ; a gold mourning Ring, marked inside ' John Cutgall died,'& c.; a small Ditto, ' Thorogood'; an old- fashioned gold Seal, engraved with the emblem of Hope : and four or five Sovereigns.— Supposed by a Man about five feet six inches high, with a very red face, and marked with the small- pox; dressed in a blue coat and dark trousers.— The property was taken from a chest of drawers in the bed- room, which was forced open with a small crow- bar, whilst the family were busily engaged in the bar. Between the hours of twelve o'clock on Saturday night the 7th instant and seven o'clock the next morning, the House of Mr. Venning, No. 23, Holloway- place, Holloway, was entered at the back door, by means of a centre- bit, and two old Kitchen Breakfast- cloths, marked ' W. A. V.' in ink, were Stolen there- from.— An old knife was left behind. Between the hours of twelve o'clock on Sunday night the 8th instant and six o'clock the next morning, the House of Mr.' Julia, No. 5, Brunswick- place, Ball's- pond- road, was entered, and the following articles were Stolen therefrom, viz.— Five Table- cloths, marked ' Julia,' with red silk; two silver Salt- spoons, five ditto Tea- spoons, a Mustard- spoon, two Table- spoons, and a Dessert- spoon, marked ' R. S. D.', crest a Stag's Head; two Hats, a cotton Umbrella, a glass Pepper- box, one Table- napkin, and two new Half- crowns.— A small crow- bar was left behind. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING-. A Man, who gave his name SMITH, of Hillingdon, stands charged with Stealing Four Cows, the property of Mr. Deare, of Walton- upon- Thames.— He is about twenty- one years of age, rather tall, dark complexion, long visage, black whiskers, and of respectable appearance; he was dressed in a dark great coat, long fustian shooting- coat, dark trousers tight at the knee, WAR OFFICE, */. 1 List and Description of NAME. Description of three men who are confined in the gaol at Lynn, Norfolk, on suspicion of horse- stealing, and are sup- posed to have committed several offences of the kind in dif- ferent parts of the country, viz.— John Wilson, horse- dealer, twenty- seven years of age, five feet eight inches, light hazel eyes, thin person ; Edward Wilson, horse- dealer, twenty- five years of age, five feet eight inches and a half high, very thin person, brown eyes ; Thomas Wilson, a boy, thirteen years of age, four feet seven inches high, light hazel eyes. It is sup- posed they are natives of Warwickshire. Information to be given to Mr. Frederick Lane, Town Clerk, Lynn, aforesaid. Stolen or strayed, on Friday, the 29th ultimo, or early on the following morning, from a field in the parish of Priston, be- longing to Mr. Green Veal, a Dark Bay Hackney Mare, in foal, seven years old, with a white spot and puffed on the off foot behind," a white spot in the forehead, saddle- marks on the off side, switch tail, and a good trotter.— If stolen, whoever will give information of the offender or offenders, shall, on his or their conviction, receive Twenty Pounds Reward. If strayed, any person who will return the mare shall be handsomely re- warded, and all reasonable expenses paid, by applying to Mr. Green Veal aforesaid. On Wednesday, the 27th ultimo, about three o'clock in the afternoon, a man very much marked with the small- pox, about five feet six or seven inches high, hired at Cambridge a Mare and Gig, to go to Bury St. Edmunds, at which place he left the mare, and hired a Dark Bay Mare of Mr. Kemp, about nine o'clock the same evening, taking the Gig and Harness with him, neither of which has since been returned, and it is sup- posed he has stolen the same. The Gig is painted green, picked out with black, patent boxes with iron caps, harness brass mounted, ornamented with a fox's head. Mr. Kemp's Bay Mare about fourteen hands and an inch high, blind in the oft eye, and hair off the fetlock- joint. Supposed to be the man who obtained a horse and gig at Birmingham in the same way. LARCENY. Absconded, on Thursday, the 5th instant, with three Sove- reigns, which were delivered to him to get changed, by the Master of Lambeth Workhouse, RICHARD PETLEY, a pauper of that parish.— He is about twenty- five years of age, five feet four inches high, sallow complexion, dark hair, which is cut close, has a scar over the right eye; was dressed in a canvas bag, grey trousers, and grey waistcoat; he is by trade a shoemaker. Stolen, from Kensington Palace, the following articles, viz. — Silver : twelve Table- spoons, twelve Dessert- spoons, twelve Tea- spoons, and twelve Forks, marked ' T. C.' in old English ; the property of His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex. One half of the said articles have been recovered.— By JAMES GRAY, who has absconded from the service of His Royal Highness. He is about thirty years of age, five feet eight inches high, of fair complexion, has a round face, and was dressed in a dark blue coat, spotted waistcoat, and drab trousers. He is supposed to be a native of Salisbury, and that his father is a shoemaker there. Description of a person suspected of having robbed Mr. Cop- land, of No. 22, Surrey- street, whilst in an Omnibus, between the Bank and Surrey- street, viz.— EDWARD EDWARDS, about twenty- eight years of age, five feet five or six inches high, rather slight made, fair complexion, sandy whiskers, and a particular look about the eyes, as if from an early weakness. He is well known to the police, having been convicted of cutting and maiming Richard Pople, late of Union Hall Police Office, and sentenced to confinement in Guildford Gaol, and has been frequently in custody since.— Information to be given at the Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, or at No. 4, Southwark Bridge Road. Absconded, on Monday, the 9th instant, from the employ of Mr. Lowe, Baker, Little Chelsea, GEORGE GRIMMOND, charged with having embezzled £ 30 and upwards, the monies of his employer.— He is thirty- eight years of age, about five feet seven inches high, stout made, sandy whiskers, fresh co- loured, and light hair; he was dressed in a blue coat with velvet collar, light waistcoat, and black trousers. It is supposed he intends to go to Scotland. On the 4th instant, WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN, sexton of St. James's Parish, Bury St. Edmunds, left that place, stealing and taking with him a sum of money belonging to the overseers, and is supposed to take the road to Yarmouth. The said WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN is about five feet nine inches high, of a sallow complexion, and a defect in one eye, and very much marked with the small- pox ; had on when he eft home, a suit of shabby black clothes, and a light- coloured duffle great- coat; he hired ahorse and gig to go to Lavenham, it is a Bay Mare, with a switch tail, star on the forehead, stands fourteen or fifteen hands high, a dark green painted Gig, with green lining, the cushions the same. Whoever will apprehend him shall receive Five Pounds Reward. Information to be given to R. Caney, Police Officer, Bury, aforesaid. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS On Sunday evening, the 1st instant, the following prisoners effected their escape from Cupar Gaol, Scotland, viz.:— GEORGE THOMPSON, alias GEORGE WALKER, con- victed at last Perth circuit, and sentenced to twelve month? imprisonment; aged about thirty- five years, five feet ten inches high, black eyes," dark complexion, and slight built; wore a blue jacket, blue trowsers, and a light- coloured cap, is vei\ I talkative, and calls himself a' cast- away sailor,' acting with : i gang as captain ; his shoes coarscly mended by himself, and full of nails; is by profession a sailor.— JOHN PITBLADO, shoemaker, was outlawed at last Perth circuit, on a charge ol theft and house- breaking ; aged forty years, five feet three inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, had on a dress blue coat, trowsers black or blue.— JOHN ANNAN, from Falkland, by trade a linen- manufacturer, charged with Forgery; aged about thirty- five years, five feet six inches high, very dark com- plexion, blue eyes, brown hair, wore a blue dress coat, blue trowsers, black waistcoat, and a black silk handkerchief.— JAMES LOTHIAN, or LOWDEN, charged with theft and house- breaking, by calling a post- boy, aged about twenty- two years, five feet seven inches high, slender made, hollow on the cheek- bones, prominent chin," fair complexion, gait straight, wore a long blue coat, black and white checked trowsers, and shoes. PRO PERT V STOLEN. Whitehall, November 29th, 1833. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That the Warehouse of Mr. J. T. Burgin, at Brandon, in the county of Suffolk, has, at various times, during the Summer of the present year, been robbed of very large quantities of Gun Flints; His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the robberies before mentioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person or persons who actually com- mitted the same) who shall discover his or their Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he she or they may be appre- hended and convicted thereof. MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hundred Pounds is hereby offered, by Mr. Burgin, to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he she or they may be apprehended and convicted of the said offence. Stolen, on Friday, the 6th instant, from the House of Mrs. Taplin, No. 21, Kirby- street, Hatton- garden, the follow- ing articles, her property, viz.— A solid gold embossed Brace- let, four silver Table- forks, and four Dessert ditto, all marked ' S. T.', ( the S. engraved round the T.); a large Gravy- spoon ; six silver Tea- spoons, marked ' T.'; one gold Bracelet, with pebbles set in gold; one rock coral Necklace; a pair of gold Ear- rings, set with turquoises ; a pearl Necklace, four Kings, various; a pair of Bracelets, blue and white beads, with gilt snaps; a pair of gold Ear- rings, a jet Necklace, and a gilt Bracelet.— By a young Man about five feet in height, very thin, and with a cut over his left eye. Stolen, on Friday evening, the 6th instant, from the Shop Window of Messrs. Freestone and Co., No. 4, Piccadilly, by removing a book, which was placed against a broken pane of glass, several Scotch Snuff- boxes, among which were the follow- ing, viz.— Two mounted in silver, glass cover, with dog and hare; one mounted in gold, a greyhound stretched out in relief; two chequer cross gold boxes, heads in relief; two or three hunting painted Scotch Boxes, ' M'Cullum' scratched at the bottom ; and three or four others. Stolen, on Friday evening, the 6th instant, from the House of Mrs. Hunter, No". 18, Grove- terrace, Camden- town, a Gold Brooch, set with pearl, maker's name ' Rundell, Ludgate- hill.' — By a Man about forty- five years of age, five feet six inches high, dark complexion, and dressed in a brown great coat, black hat, and shoes, and had a small cane in his hand, who called under pretence of taking furnished lodgings. Stolen, on Saturday afternoon, the 7th instant, between one and two o'clock, froin the Parlour of Mr. Henry Williams, No. 134, Saint John- street- road, a Silver Watch, maker's name ' S. Karrott, Kington,' with ' E. W.' engraved on the inside of the rim of the outside case; also a Metal Key, attached by a black ribbon. Lost, supposed to be Stolen, from No. 2, Bridge- street, West- minster, a red knitted Silk Purse, with gilt slides, and bells at the end; the purse contained a remarkably marked Half- Guinea, of the reign of George the 3rd, of the spade kind : also a very old Silver Spoon, with a flat round bowl, and a gilt figure of one of the Apostles at the end ; a Silver embossed Box egg form ; a black satin Boddice, with white satin sleeves, covered with French gauze, and bound with white satin and white gauze ribbon.— Information to be given at the Metropolitan Police Office, Great Scotland Yard. Stolen, on Friday afternoon, the 6th inst., about two o'clock, from the House of Mr. York, Surgeon, & c., No. 5, Windsor- terrace, Edgware- road, the following articles, viz.— A pair of silver Sugar- tongs, marked ' Y.'; and a silver Sugar- spoon, ^ not marked.— By a Man about five feet seven inches high, sandy hair, and dressed in a snuff colour frock coat, who called under pretence of consulting Mr. York, and that gentleman not being at home, he was shown into the parlour and desired to wait, when he committed the felony, and soon after departed. Stolen, on Thursday afternoon, the 5th instant, between six and seven o'clock, from a House, in the neighbourhood of Russell- square, the following articles, viz.— A white cornelian Necklace with a heart suspended, a pair of white cornelian Bracelets, a malekite Necklace with Bracelet to correspond, a Bohemian garnet Necklace and Bracelet; a Scotch pebble Neck- lace and Cross, with one Bracelet having a hair snap, and the name ' Nancy' at the back ; a Russia coral Necklace with red coral snap, a silver Cross with ' A. L. M. M.', a pearl mourning Brooch with L'Amitifc' engraved on the back, a small pearl Brooch with ' Ann' or ' A. B.' on the back, a mourning Ring with ' James Amedee Mieville' kc. engraved on it, a cameo Ring with the head of Pius VIIth., a turquoise head Ring, and various other Rings : also aflat gold engine- turned Watch, maker's name'Viner,' with a small gold Chain attached to it, and a small white cor- nelian Heart, and a gold Key.— Information to be given to B. Schofield, constable, at Marlborough- street Office, by whom a Reward of Five Pounds will be paid upon the apprehension of the offender, or such information as may lead to his or her apprehension. Stopped, supposed to be Stolen, on Monday morning the 9th instant, an old- fashioned Gold Watch- case; it was offered for sale, to a Watchmaker, in Shoreditch, by a Woman, who said it was picked up in Hoxton, last Friday.— Application to be made to Thomas Garton, head constable, Worship- street Office. Between the hours of two o'clock on Sunday afternoon the 8th instant and seven o'clock the next morning, an uninhabited House, undergoing repair, in Landsdown- place, Hackney, was entered, by removing a deal board which was nailed up at the area window, and the following articles were Stolen therefrom, viz.— A Trying Plane, a Smoothing Ditto, a Jack Ditto, five or six Chisels, three Gouges, five hundred Cut Brads, a Sixth Steel Trying Square with blue blade, a hammer, and three Brad- awls, the Property of one of the workmen, named Wm. Baker, 39, Hope street, Hackney Road. The above articles were in a basket, the handles of which were bound with webbing. Stolen, on Tuesday afternoon, the 10th instant, about two o'clock, from the Shop of Mr. Pritchett, Upholsterer, No. 204, High Holborn, a double- breasted brown Great Coat. On Sunday, the 8th instant, as Mrs. Hanson, of Maidstone, was travelling to London, by the ' Defiance' Maidstone Coach, she had her Pocket- book stolen from her pocket, by* cutting through her clothes; it contained a £ 100 Bank Post Bill, • drawn in the name of ' D. Hanson, Esq., 17th Lancers,' dated ' 27th July 1833, No. T 3108,' indorsed! by Mr. Hanson, and made payable to Mrs. Hanson, but not indorsed by her; also two Sovereigns and five Half- crowns. Stolen, on Tuesday morning, the 10th instant, about eleven o'clock, from the Shop of Mr. James Reed, No. 15, Motcomb- street, Belgrave- square, about £ 10 worth of Stamps.— By a dirty looking Man, about five feet seven inches high, fair com- plexion, marked with the small- pox, and dressed as a carpenter, in a light coloured jacket and black hat, who went into the shop under pretence of purchasing a stamp. Stolen, on Tuesday morning, the 10th instant, about eleven o'clock, from the ' Blue Posts' Public- house, Southampton Buildings, Holborn, a dark olive Great Coat, a large damask Table- c'oth, two or three linen Shirts, and a Cravat.— By a Man who slept in the house on the previous night: he is about thirty years of age, and dressed in a brown coat and dark trousers. Found, in possession of ELIZABETH MARNOR, four Irish linen Sheets, nearly new, and are marked in the centre ' Durnford,' in ink. Supposed to have been stolen.— Applica- tion to be made at Marylebone Police Office. On Tuesday afternoon, the 3rd instant, between two and three o'clock, as Mr. John Copland, of No. 22, Surrey- street, Strand, was riding in an Omnibus, from the Bank to the end of Surrey- street, he had his pocket picked of a blue morocco Pocket- book, containing a £ 100 Bank of England Note, ' No. 6712,' dated ' 28th Oct. 1833'; and a £ 5 Note; also sundry Memorandums, of no value to any one but the owner.— In- formation to be given to Mr. Hoffman, No. 426, Strand. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 5th instant, from the person of Mr. John Burgass, at the Box Entrance of the Olvmpic Theatre, a small gold horizontal Hunting Watch, maker's name ' Capt, or Treundler, Geneva,' quatre trous en rubis; also a small gold curb Chain and gold Kev.— Five Guineas Reward will be paid, on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the watch, on application to Mr. John Burgass, No. 187, Regent- street.
