The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. Fifty Pounds Reward will be paid to any person giving such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, by applying to Mr. H. Gaskell, Solicitor, Wigan. As no charge is made for the insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Property in the Police Gazette and Hue and Cry, all Letters addressed to the Editor upon that subject, are requested to be post- paid, otherwise the insertion requested will not take place. MURDER., AND MALICIOUSLY SHOOTING- OR STABBING- On Sunday night, the 3rd ultimo, about a quarter past twelve o'clock, a Police Constable of the K Division, was, without any provocation, stabbed under the right eye and left arm with a knife, whilst on duty, by a man named JOHN SULLIVAN, who has been in custody of the Police several times: he is about five feet five inches high, stout made, twenty years of age, full face, fair complexion, dressed in a fustian jacket, straw hat, and white duck trousers. I. Ie has since left his lodgings.— Informa- tion to be given at the Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, or at the Police Station, Mile End Road. On Wednesday, the 30th Oct., a Man and Woman, travel- lers, who are supposed to be still in the county of Kent, bar- barously assaulted, with intent to murder, Sarah Whatley ( a poor woman, sixty- four years of age, who keeps a beer- shop in Bcarsted parish), with two pokers, one of which was broken and the other bent by the blows which they inflicted, chiefly on her head, so that at present there arc but faint hopes of her re- covery. They robbed her of Eighteen Shillings and a bad F" ive- shilling- piece, which Mrs. Whatley thinks she took of them a few days previous.— The Man is nearly thirty years of age, about five feet eight inches high, of dark complexion, very dark hair and eyes, and dark pointed whiskers; he bad on a short fustian gaberdine, blue trousers, ancle- jack shoes, and a black hat. The Woman is about forty years of age, and of robust appearance; she wore a dark straw bonnet and dirty light cot- ton gown. They had two small bundles, one of which was in a common black handkerchief: the man left a willow stick with- out the rind in the house.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the apprehension of the offenders, shall, upon their conviction, receive Fifty Pounds Reward.— Information to be addressed to T. D. Jones, constable, Maidstone. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, that on the night of Monday, the 4th of November, instant, a Rick of Straw, standing in the farm- yard of Mr. Samuel Bal- lard Pickett, at Wroughton, near Swindon, in the county of Wilts, was feloniously and maliciously set on fire by some per- son or persons unknown ; and that a Bam, Stable, and other Outbuildings, together with about ninety sacks of wheat in the Barn, two Wheat- ricks, a Bean- rick, a hay- rick, and two ricks of Straw, besides other property of less value, were there- by totally destroyed; His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in setting fire to the said property hath been pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person who actually set fire to the same) who shall discover and give evidence against his accomplicc or accomplices therein, so that he she or they may be appre- hended and convicted thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hun- dred Pounds will be given to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the actual offender or offenders, so that he she or they may be'apprehended and convicted of the said offence. Fifty Pounds of such Reward will be paid by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, and the remaining F'ifty Pounds by the said Samuel Ballard Pickett. Information to be given at the offices of Messrs. Bradford and Burt, Solicitors, Swindon, Wilts. ROBBERY FROM THE FERSON On Saturday morning, the 30th ultimo, about two o'clock, Mr. Richard Ellis, of Pattenham, Surrey, was stopped on the Portsmouth Road, near Esher, by three Men, two of whom presented pistols, while the third robbed him of a yellow canvas Bag, containing sixteen Sovereigns, four Half- crown pieces, and one Sixpence.— The Men were about thirty years of age, about five feet nine or ten inches high, and stout made; two of them are of fair complexion, and dressed in light rough great coats, the other of dark complexion, and dressed in a dark Brighton beaver great coat.— They were seen by Mr. Ellis, at the ' Three Goats' Heads' Public- house, Wandsworth- road, between one and two o'clock on Friday afternoon, from which place it is supposed they followed him. They were in a dark painted Gig with yellow bars. Mr. Ellis was returning from Covent Garden Market, with his wagon, which he was driving when stopped by the above parties. HOUSE- BREAKING. On Monday night, the 2nd instant, or early the following morning, the Shop of Mr. Edward Rogers, of Charles- street, in the town of Wrexham. Dcnbiglishire, was entered, by means of skeleton keys, and the following property Stolen therefrom, viz.— Fourteen yards of dark Olive superfine Cloth ; twenty- one yards and a quarter of superfine Black Cloth; sixteen yards and a half of light Drab Kerseymere; eight yards of Treble Ditto; seven yards of Diagonal Ditto; and several other pieces of Cloth.— Whoever will give information that 2362 POLICE GAZETTE; Oi l , H U E A N D CRY. 2495 may lead to conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of " the property, to the said Mr. Rogers, or to Mr. Foulkes, So- licitor, Wrexham, shall receive Ten Pounds Reward. On Tuesday evening, the 3rd instant, between six and eight o'clock, the House oY Mr. Evans, No. 39, Arlington- street, Waterloo- road, was entered, and the following property was Stolen therefrom, viz.— Two yards and a half of black cotton Velvet, two yards and a quarter of Dowlass, eight yards and a half of coloured Print, nine yards and a half of ditto ditto; two pair of black worsted Stockings, six yards of Calico, one coral Necklace, a white Petticoat, a pair of French white Stays, a shawl- pattern cotton Gown, a muslin Gown, a white Petti- coat with pocket attached, two Shifts, an olive cloth Pelisse braided, and a Canister containing one pound weight of tea.— The key of the door was left on the cill of the window, for a lodger, by which it is supposed the entrance was effected,' it having been removed. On Friday night, the 29th ultimo, or early the following morning, the Dwelling- house of Mrs. Harrington, at the North- rate, Bury St. Edmund's, was broken and entered, and the following property stolen therefrom ; an olive Great Coat, an olive cloth Cloak with a stand- up collar, black Astrachan fur, li-. ed with white shalloon, blue camlet Cloak, lined with drab shalloon; old black silk Claak, lined with blue silk, light drab great Coat, blue great Coat, gilt buttons, striped swansdown waistcoat, four beaver Hats, brown Cap, light blue Cap, blue great Coat, silvered buttons, scarlet Cloak, green and red plaid Cloak, two pair of Cloth Boots, brown silk Umbrella, and a pair of drab kerseymere long Gaiters. Whoever will ap- prehend the offender or offenders, shall on conviction receive Two Guineas Reward, by applying to the Rev. Mr. Thompson. Information to be given to Mr. R. Caney, Police Officer, Brentgovel- street, Bury. On the 28th ultimo, two Men went to the House of Mr. Neil, the ' Golden Lion' Inn, Bath, said they had just arrived from London, and intended staying for two or three days: they slept at the house that night, and the next morning, about eleven o'clock, they picked the locks of a bed- room door and . drawers, and stole the following property, viz.— Silver : fourteen Tea- spoons, four Table- spoons, three pair of Sugar- tonw, three Salt- spoons, all marked ' J. C. N.'; a Bowl of a punch- ladle, a Fish- slice, a silver Snuff- box; a lady's gold Watch, a gold curb Chain, a gold Seal; six or seven gold Rings, one of them a dark mourning- ring, with motto ' a gift from James Neil to Cathe- rine Neil'; two gold Brooches with hair, a gold Pin with corne- lian stone, five plain gold Brooches and one with pearl; two £ 5 Notes of Tugwell and Co.' s Bank, Bath; a £ 5 Shaftesbury Bank Note ; and about £ 35 in other monies.— One of the Men is about five feet seven inches high, slender made, twenty- eight years of a? e, dark brown hair and whiskers, sallow complexion, wore a darK olive coat, double- breasted buff waistcoat, and light drab kerseymere trousers; the other is about five feet four inches high, twenty years of age, dark hair, no whiskers, wore a blue lappcl coat, black waistcoat, and dark trousers. HOUSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen or Strayed, on Tuesday night the 3d instant, or early the following morning, from a Paddock at Winterbourne, near Bristol, in the county of Gloucester, a very light bay or straw- berry- colour Mare, of the nag kind, in foal, eight years old, about fifteen hands high, white face, with white under the jaw, three white le^ s, and a sand crack on the off foot before, and a switch tail. Whoever will give information of the said mare, so that she may be recovered, shall, if stolen, receive a Reward of Five Guineas on the conviction of the offender or offenders; if strayed, all reasonable expenses will be paid on application to Jonas Edwards, of the parish of Winterbourne, aforesaid. Supposed to be the man who obtained a horse and gig at Birmingham in the same way. On Thursday night, the 28th ultimo,' the Stable of Thomas Woodward, Esq., of Sproughton, near Ipswich, was broken and entered, and a Dark Brown Bay Gelding Stolen therefrom, lie is six years old, has lost four of the front teeth, two from the upper and two from the lower jaw, the front and corner remaining entire; a switch tail, off hind foot white, a splint on the off fore leg, thick in the glands, a thickness on the outside of both hind legs just below the hock- joints, and had two new- shoes on behind, the fore ones were old.— Also, a curb Bridle, the headstall thereof was old, and the two reins were new, the bits and curb rusty ; and a Saddle, about half worn, with spring bars and bright stirrups, and the maker's name under the flap, ' Wade, Saddle and Harness Maker, Corn- hill, Ipswich.— The Horse was taken on the road towards Ipswich, a short distance, and it there appeared as if he had been tied to a gig or cart, or harnessed and put therein ; and was then turned back and took the road tow- ards hadleigh. A person suspected was seen to leave Ipswich at ten o'clock on Thursday night in a dark gig with a dark horse; he was dressed in a dark rough coat, and inquired the distance and way to Sproughton by the Hadleigh road.— Whoever will give such information as will lead to a conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receivc Ten Pounds Reward from the Samford Association, and a further Reward of Ten Pounds from Mr. Woodward.— Lawrence, Solicitor to the Association. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 28th uitlmo, or early the following morning, from Hanger- Hill Farm, Ealing, a black Cart Mare, aged, fifteen hands high, three white feet, a blaze down the face, long tail, and a large callous mark on the fetlock of the off hind leg.— The property of Mr. Goddard. Stolen, on Saturday night, the 30th ultimo, from a Close, adjoining the village of Skeffington, Leicestershire, a stout Bay Pony, rising seven years old, fourteen hands high, black legs, no white except a lew saddle- marks, rather short cut tail, trots well, and his action good.— Whoever will give information that may fead to conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Ten Guineas Reward from the Billesdon Association ; and also Five Guineas Reward from Mr. Robert Sikes, the owner, of Skeflington, aforesaid. Stolen, on Saturday night, the 30th ultimo, or early the fol- lowing morning, from a Field, in the parish of Swalcliffe, a Fat Ewe Sheep, which was killed on the other side of the hedge, leaving the skin and entrails.—- Whoever will give information that may lead to conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Ten Pounds Reward from Mr. John Greaves, the owner, of Swalcliffe Lea, near Banbury ; and also Ten Pounds Reward from Mr. J. P. Judge, Treasurer of the Ncithrop Association for the protection of Property. A Man calling- himselt JOSEPH PYE was apprehended by J. Unwin, Police Officer, Leicester, at Cambridge, on the 10th inst., and is committed to the County Gaol at Leicester, charged with Horse Stealing. A Horse supposed to be stolen, of which the following is a description, was found in his pos- session, viz.,— a dark- brown Stallion, aged, fourteen hands two or three inches high, long tail, dark legs, mixed with grey hairs round the middle of the legs, a white ring just above the hoof of the near hind leg, a small streak of white on the fore • head, and a streak of white on the nose. Application to be made to J. Unwin, Police Officer, Leicester. Stolen or Strayed, on Friday night, the 22nd ultimo, from the Farm- yard of Mr. Herrett, of Tongham, near Farnham, a Chesnut Horse Pony, about twelve hands and a half high, mane and tail short, the mane rather silvery, lave- eared, very thick, strong, and active, and rising five years old. Also, " a Light Chesnut Filly, about thirteen hands and a half high, with a great deal of white about the face, and white fetlock, low pasterns, and rising five years old.— Whoever will give informa- tion to Mr. Attfield, Butcher, Farnham, Surrey, shall, on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Horses, receive Ten Pounds Reward. LARCENY. On the 4th instant, WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN, sexton of St. James's Parish, Bury St. Edmunds, left that place, stealin" and taking with him a sum of money belonging to the overseers, and is supposed to take the road to Yarmouth. The said WILLIAM CHAMBERLAIN is about five feet nine inches high, of a sallow complexion, and a defect in one eye, and very much marked with the small- pox; had on when he left home, a suit of shabby black clothes, and a light- coloured duffle great- coat; he hired a horse and gig to go to Lavenham, it is a bay Mare, with a switch tail, star on the forehead, stands fourteen or fifteen hands high, a dark green painted Gig, with green lining, the cushions the same. Whoever will apprehend him shall reccive Five Pounds Reward. Information to be given to R. Caney, Police Officer, Bury, aforesaid. Further particulars respecting JOHN STONE, who is sus- pected of having robbed his Employer.— It is supposed that the said JOHN STONE came from America when about fourteen years of age ; is about five feet nine inches high, rather stout about the shoulders, about thirty- three years old, has dark bushy hair, dark eyes, large whiskers, full face, rather pale, good teeth, leans forward when walking, and swings his arms: is supposed to have gone to Liverpool for the purpose of em- barking for America: he was formerly a Metropolitan Police Constable, belonging to the A Division. HENRY JOHN RALFS, late Clerk to Mr. Francis Harding Gell, of Lewes, Sussex, Solicitor, stands charged with embez- zling divers Sums of Money, belonging to his employer.— He is a native of Southampton, where Tie was articled; he after- wards practised as a Solicitor, from 1829 to 1831, both vcars inclusive, at No. 42, Great Marylebone- strcet, London ; about twenty- eight or twenty- nine years of age, slight made, about five feet nine inches high, dark complexion, black eyes hair and eyebrows, has an impediment in his speech, is near- sighted, and usually wears glasses.— Whoever will give information of the said HENRY JOHN RALFS, so that he may be safely lodged in any of His Majesty's Gaols, shall receive'a Reward of Twenty- five Guineas, upon application to Mr. Gell, afore- said ; or to Mr. Henry Smart, No. 31, Percy- street, Bedford- square, London. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS On Sunday evening, the 1st instant, the following prisoners effected their escape from Cupar Gaol, Scotland, viz.:— GEORGE THOMPSON, alias GEORGE WALKER, con- victed at last Perth circuit, and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment; aged about thirty- five years, five feet ten inches high, black eyes, dark complexion, and slight built; wore a blue jacket, blue trowsers, and a light- coloured cap, is very talkative, and. calls himself a ' cast- away sailor,' acting with a gang as captain; his shoes coarsely mended by himself, and full of nails; is by profession a sailor— JOHN PITBLADO, shoemaker, was outlawed at last Perth circuit, on a charge of theft and house- breaking; aged forty years, five feet three inches high, dark brown hair, brown eyes, had on a dress blue coat, trowsers black or blue.— JOHN ANNAN, from Falkland, by trade a linen- manufacturer, charged with Forgery; aged about thirty- five years, five feet six inches high, very dark com- plexion, blue eyes, brown hair, wore a blue dress coat, blue trowsers, black waistcoat, and a black silk Handkerchief.— JAMES LOTHIAN, or LOWDEN, charged with theft and house- breaking, by calling a post- boy, aged about twenty- two years, five feet seven inches high, slender made, hollow on the cheek- bones, prominent chin, fair complexion, gait straight, wore a lone blue coat, black and white checked trowsers, and shoes. A Reward of Five Guineas will be paid by the Procu- rator Fiscal of Fife, for the first prisoner apprehended and lodged in any of his Majesty's Gaols ; and Five Guineas for the apprehension of the other three.— Information to be sent to Mr. List, Superintendent of Police, Haddington, North Britain. PROPERTY STOLEN. Stolen, on Tuesday afternoon, the 3rd instant, between four and five o'clock, from the House of Mrs. C. Kingdom, No. 7, Bolton- place, Queen's- elms, Chelsea, during the temporary absence of the Servant, the following articles, viz.— A plated Tea- pot with silver edges, a silver Cream- jug, six ditto Tea- spoons, two Table- spoons, and a silver Mustard- pot and spoon, all with crest a Dolphin ; two Sheets, and two Table- cloths. On Tuesday afternoon, the 3rd instant, between two and three o'clock, as Mr. John Copland, of No. 22, Surrey- street, Strand, was riding in an Omnibus, from the Bank to the end of Surrey- street, he had his pocket picked of a blue morocco Pocket- book, containing a £ 100 Bank of England Note, ' No. 6712,' dated ' 28th Oct. 1833'; and a £ 5 Note; also sundry Memorandums, of no value to any one but the owner.— In- formation to be given to Mr. Hoffman, No. 426, Strand. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 5th instant, from the person of Mr. John Burgass, at the Box Entrance of the Olympic Theatre, a small gold horizontal Hunting Watch, maker's name ' Capt, or Treundler, Geneva,' quatre trous en rubis; also a small gold curb Chain and gold Key.— Five Guineas Reward will be paid, on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the watch, on application to Mr. John Burgass, No. 187, Regent- street. Stolen, on the evening of Friday, the 29th ult., from the dwelling- house of Mr. Joseph Thornicraft, at Padgbury's- lane, near Congleton, in Cheshire, two gold watches, with two gold chains, one of them has long links ; also a gold seal ( the crest a falcon on a crown), 1 silver stop- watch, capped and jewelled, with a string and key at it, maker's name, Chadwick and Co., London ; ten sovereigns, one large silver gravy- spoon, eight silver table- spoons, ten silver tea- spoonS, two silver salt- spoons, all marked J. T. in cipher.— Whoever will give such informa- tion as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, shall receivc a reward of Ten Guineas on application to the said John Thornicraft. Stolen, from the House of Mr. William Collard, No. 32, Great Castle- street, Cavendish- square, a pair of stout fiddle- headed Sugar- tongs, marked ' P. W. H.' Stolen, on Monday evening, the 2nd instant, between five and six o'clock, from the Gosport Coach, supposed between Ham- mersmith and Kensington, a Trunk containing the following articles, the property of Mr. Smith, No. 22, New Quebec- street, Portman- square, viz.— Three muslin Gowns, one silk ditto, three cotton ditto, one dressing ditto, a black Shawl value five guineas ; three white Petticoats and five pair of cotton Stock- ings, marked ' M. S.'; two cloth Shifts, ' A. No. 7 '; a pair of Pockets, four muslin Handkerchiefs and five cambric ditto, marked ' S.'; a flannel Petticoat, a ditto Shift, eight lace Cot- lars, a quantity of lace Caps, Aprons, silk Handkerchiefs, and sundry other articles. Stopped, on Monday afternoon, the 2nd instant, about two o'clock, in the Saint Pancras Road, in possession of a Man who refuses to give his name, and who is now in custody, a Truck, supposed to have been Stolen : the body is painted light blue, the wheels chocolate, one of the front staves is broken, and the name has been rubbed out.— Application to be made at the Police Station, Phoenix- street, Somers- town, where the Truck may be seen.
