Containing the Substance of ail Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, a id whether committed for Trial, Re- examinati< m, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Houses, with as much particularity as can be given, icith every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. MURDER, AED MALICIOUSLY SHOOTING OR STABBING The following is a description of three men, who stand charged on the Coroner's Inquest at Albrougb, Yorkshire, with the wilful murder of John Brown, viz., WILLIAM HACK- NEY, formerly a labourer, latterly an oyster- man. about twenty- six years of age, five feet six or eight inches high, about about twelve or thirteen stone, rather ruddy complexion, rather broad- set, dark eyes and hair, full faced, rather high in the cheek bones, left Hull on the morning of the 31st October, went to Boston, slept at Boston all night, and took the Perseverance coach for London at six o'clock on Friday morning the 1st November, outside, had on a dark great- coat, had two suits of clothes with him, one a new suit ot black, appeared to be much bruised about the forehead, had a bandage about his head, appeared to have much inward pain when he coughed, had a mark or scar from the corner of the right side of the mouth to the chin, was a native of Hull, and when he talks rather shows his teeth.— THOMAS WILKINSON, a nail- maker, a native of Hull, about twenty- eight or thirty years of age, about five feet eight inches high, eleven or twelve stone weight, walks quick, takes short strides, rather sallow complexion, neither stout or slender, but in a middling way, thin of flesh in face, round face, rather high cheek- bones, supposed to be in Hull or the neighbourhood.— WILLIAM THOMPSON, by trade a butcher, about thirty years of age, stout made, about five feet eleven inches high, weighs about fourteen stone, fair or ruddy complexion, generally wears a high- crowned hat, snuff- coloured coat, drab trowsers or breeches, gaiters or boots, walks very straight and upright, of rather genteel appearance, supposed to be a regular thief, and most probably well known in the ring, and amongst the thimblemen in London, supposed to be a Northamptonshire man, and probably now in London with Hackney, being his second. Information to be given to Mr. John Bowley, or Francis Smith, constables of Hull, Yorkshire. On Sunday night, the 3rd instant, about a quarter past twelve o'clock, a Police Constable of the K Division, was, without any provocation, stabbed under the right eye and left arm with a knife, whilst on duty, by a man named JOHN SULLIVAN, who has been in custody of thePolice several times: he is about five feet five inches high, stout made, twenty years of age, full face, fair complexion, dressed in a fustian jacket, straw hat, and white duck trousers. He has since left his lodgings.— Informa- tion to be given at the Police Office, Great Scotland Yard, or at the Police Station, Mile End Road. On Wednesday, the 30th ultimo, a Man and Woman, travel- lers, who are supposed to be still in the county of Kent, bar- barously assaulted, with intent to murder, Sarah Whatley ( a poor woman, sixty- four years of age, who keeps a beer- shop in Bearsted parish), with two pokers, one of which was broken and the other bent by the blows which they inflicted, chiefly on her head, so that at present there are but faint hopes of her re- covery. They robbed her of Eighteen Shillings and a bad Five- shilling- piece, which Mrs. Whatley thinks she took of them a few days previous.— The Man is nearly thirty years of age, about five feet eight inches high, of dark complexion, very dark hair and eyes, and dark pointed whiskers ; he had on a short fustian gaberdine, blue trousers, anclc- jack shoes, and a black hat. The Woman is about forty years of age, and of robust appearance ; she wore a dark straw bonnet and dirty light cot- ton gown. They had two small bundles, one of which was in a common black handkerchief: the man left a willow stick with- out the rind in the house.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the apprehension of the offenders, shall, upon their conviction, receive Fifty Pounds Reward.— Information to be addressed to T. D. Jones, constable, Maidstone. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, that on the night of Monday, the 4th of November, instant, a Rick of Straw," standing in the farm- yard of Mr. Samuel Bal- lard Pickett, at Wroughton, near Swindon, in the county of Wilts, was feloniously and maliciously set on fire by some per- son or persons unknown; and that a Barn, Stable, and other Outbuildings, together with about ninety sacks of Wheat in the i Barn, two Wheat- ricks, a Bean- rick, a llay- rick, and two ! ricks of Straw, besides other properly of less value, were there- by totally destroyed. His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in setting fire to the said property hath been pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any- one of them ( except the person who acUiallv set fire to the same) who shall discover and give evidence against his accomplice or accomplices therein, so tliat he she or they may be appre- hended and convicted thereof. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hun- j dred Pounds will be given to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the actual offender or offenders, so that he j she or they may be apprehended and convicted of the said , offence. Fifty Pounds of such Reward will be paid by the ; Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of his Majesty's Treasury, and the remaining Fifty Pounds by the said Samuel Ballard Pickett. Information to be given at the offices of Messrs. Bradford and Burt, Solicitors, Swindon, Wilts. Whitehall, October 29th, 1833. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, on the night of Tuesday, the 15th day of October instant, or early on the following morning, some evil- disposed person or persons feloniously broke open the Dwelling- house of Mr. Scott, the Bailiff of the Right Honourable Lord Montagu, at Ditton Park, Bucks, situated within the Moat, and attempted in two different places to set it on fire, by means of a quantity of gunpowder, taken from a tin box, found in one of the rooms : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the felony before mentioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person or persons who attempted to set fire to the house) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so I hat he she or they mav be apprehended and con- victed thereof. * MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hun- dred Guineas is hereby offered to any person ( except as afore- said) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he she or they may be apprehended and convicted of the said offence.— Such Reward to be paid on application to Mr. Scott. HOUSE- BREAKING. On Tuesday night, the 5th instant, between seven and twelver o'clock, the House of Mr. Dismon, No. 15, North- street, Whitechapel- road, was entered by means of skeleton keys, during the absence of the family, and the following articles were stolen therefrom, viz.— An olive- brown Great Coat lined with silk, a pair of drab Trousers, a brown silk Waistcoat, a brown cloth Cloak, a muslin Dress, five Sheets, a damask Table cloth, a sable Muff, a black lace Veil, a black silk- velvet Tippet, a slate- colour silk Dress, two lace Caps, three Pillow- cases, " three child's Bed- gowns, five child's Shirts, a piece of Cotton, four child's cambric Caps, a mahogany Tea- caddy, four diaper Napkins, a white Petticoat, a red cotton Dress, a white silk Shawl, a silk Waistcoat with velvet collar, a black velvet Keticule, and a pair of buff- colour summer Trousers. 2330 P O L I C E GAZETTE; Oi l , H U E A N D CRY. 2495 On Tuesday night, the 5th instant, the Dwelling- house of Edward Browne, '" Esq., in Ber- street, in the City of Norwich, was broken and entered, and the following articles were Stolen therefrom, viz.— Silver: one pair of old Candlesticks, a pair of modern ditto ; a pair of small taper Candlesticks, very old, with a crest; a plain square Caddy, with a silver sprig on the cover ; two Sauce- boats and one Wine- strainer, marked ' B.' in old English ; a Mustard- pot and Spoon, the spoon marked ditto ; two Snuffer- trays, same mark ; a Sugar- spoon with pearl han- dle, a Ditto with wrought silver handle, a Ditto gilt; seven Tea- spoons, marked as above; and one F'cpper- castor. Also, a pair of plated Snuffers, a pair of steel Ditto ; an inlaid satin wood Tea- chest, containing two caddies, a tin sugar- pot, and a pair of silver- gilt sugar- tongs ; one gold split Ring, with three Seals— one an agate engraved ' M. A. C.\ one a cornelian with an old English B, and the other with a Figure holding a lantern and the word ' Ilush'; a small silver Vinaigrette, with Mrs. Browne's initials; a small Box of working Instruments ; and a shall leather Case.— Whoever will give such information to the said Edward Browne, Esq., or to Mr. Day, at the Sword Room, Norwich, as may lead to conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Fifty Pounds Reward, on application to the said Edward Browne, Esq. On Monday evening, the 4th instant, between seven and eight o'clock," the House of Mr. William Paine, No. 12, Smith- street, Newington, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the following articles were stolen therefrom, viz.— An oval shaped gold Brooch set with flaxen hair, a gold Locket set with j dark hair with glass front, and two gold Breast- pins. On Monday " night, the 4th instant, the Counting- house of Messrs. Atkinson and Brown, No. 114, Goswell- street, Saint I. uke, was entered, and two old Gowns also 4s. 6d. were stolen therefrom. On Tuesday evening, the 5th instant, between six and ten ' o'clock, the House of Mr. Buttress, No. 5, James- street, Lam- , beth- walk, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the fol- lowing articles were stolen therefrom, viz.— Two or three silk Handkerchiefs, a pair of black Trousers, a blue cloth Waist- , coat with sleeves, a corduroy ditto with sleeves, and one Half- guinea. On Wednesday evening, the 6th instant, about eight o'clock, the House of Mrs. Archer, No. 11, Pontipool- place, Webber- street, Lambeth, was entered by means of skeleton keys, and the following articles were Stolen therefrom, viz.— A black silk ; Gown, two cotton ditto, a bombazin ditto, a white ditto, an I orange colour Shawl, a black Veil, several Petticoats, a wed- ding Ring and Keeper, three linen Sheets ; a sill chief, marked ' E. P.'; two muslin ditto ' E. A.'; twenty Shillings in silver. silk Handker- and about HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. A Man, who gives his name JOHN HOLLOWAY WHITE, i is delained at Witney, on suspicion of stealing a Mare. He is : about five feet four inches high, rather dark hair, red face, dark beard, rather prominent nose, and had on a smock- frock over a : dark- coloured coat, blue neckerchief with dark spots, dark cord breeches, and tanned leather leggings reaching from the middle of the thigh to the top of his high shoes ; he has a bundle con- taining the following articles, which are supposed to have been stolen, viz. a white smock- frock nearly new, a new calico man's shirt unfinished, a boy's shirt, a large dark drab jean frock coat, a dark striped waistcoat with buff ground, a woman's shawl, a ; child's white handkerchief marked"' H. H.', a pair of light drab plush gaiters, and some bread cheese and bacon. The mare is black, about fourteen hands high, white hind legs about half- way towards the hock, a small part of the near hind leg black near the hoof in front, a star m the forehead, a small square WAR OFFICE, •// List and Description of NAME. He is about forty- five years of age, but in appearance rather older, about five feet six or seven inches high, of thin visage, and has much the appearance of a hard drinker; he usually wore a fustian coat and trousers, and resembled a plumber, at which trade he occasionally worked, and is a native of Epping, where his relations principally reside. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, divers riotous and evil- disposed persons, on Thursday, the twentv- fourth day of October, at the Parish of St. Mary- le- bone, in the County of Middlesex, riotously and turaultuously assembled themselves together to disturb the public peace, and then and there unlawfully and riotously rescued divers Goods and Chattels there lawfully distrained for certain assessed taxes then due and in arrear, and at the time of such rescue. in the lawful custody of the officcr of the sheriff distraining the same: His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons engaged in the said offence, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person or persons who personally were engaged in the said rescue) who shalldiscover his accomplice or accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they may be apprehended and convicted thereof. Stolen, on Monday morning, the 4th instant, from the House of Mr. Coe, the ' Roebuck' Beer- shop, Holly Bush Hill, Hampstead, the following articles, viz.— A pair of Women's new Shoes, a pair of Men's ditto, a cotton Shift, a linen ditto, two silk Handkerchiefs, two cotton ditto, and a pair of blue mixed Trousers.— By a Man who lodged in the house the pre- vious night; he is about five feet six inches high, of fair com- plexion, middle age, a pimple on his nose, and dressed in a shooting jacket with large pockets ; he represented himself as a plumber and glazier by trade. Stolen, from an unoccupied House, No. 22, East Mount Ter- race, Stepney, the following property, viz.— A quantity of Plate, some Household Linen, and two Beds.— Some of the articlesof Plate are marked ' J. WV and ' J. M. S.'; the I. inen ' A. S.' or ' A. Strange', ' J. W.' or ' James Williamson.' Stolen, between Wednesday the 30th ultimo and Thursday the 7th instant, from the House of Mr. Gibbs, No. 11, Bedford- square, sixteen large silver Forks and two Table- spoons. Slolen, on Friday morning, the 8th instant, between ten and eleven o'clock, from the House of Mr. Cleland, No. 1, Michael's- grove, Brompton, a Silver Tea- pot, crest two Stags, each bear- ing a foot on a heart, encircled with leaves.— By a middle aged Man, rather tall, dressed in a light coat and white apron, carry- ing a basket. Stolen, between seven o'clock on Thursday evening the 7th instant and seven o'clock the following morning, from an un- finished House at Barnsbury Park, the following Carpenter's Tools, viz.— A panel Plane, maker's name ' Mossley and Raw- linson ' on the end : a trying Plane, with the handle broken, and a screw through it, ' Rawlinson ' on the end; a trying Plane, marked ' Handley' on the end; a panel Plane, " rab- bitted on the side, marked ' Handley'; a trying Plane,' Truck and one Axe with stout handle.
