POLICE OR, HUE IPUBLTO^ ED 6JT GAZETTE; AND CRYo ^ uttoxit^ No. 382.] WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1831. Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. As no charge is made for the insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Properly in the Police Gazette and Hue and Cry, all Letters addressed to the Editor upon that subject, are requested to be post- paid. ARSON AND WILFUL BURNING. WHITEHALL, September 6th, 1831. Whereas it hath been, humbly represented unto the King, That, between the hours of eight and nine in the evening of Thursday, the 1st day of September instant, an Oat Rick, in a Field, on the Farm of Mr. Broome Witts, of Baydon, in the county of Wilts, was feloniously and maliciously set on Fire and Destroyed, by some evil- disposed person or persons unknown : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Felony before men- tioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person who actually set Fire to the said Rick) who shall discover his Accom- plice or Accomplices therein, so that be, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hundred Pounds is be, reby offered by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, and a further Reward of Fifty Pounds by Mr. Wilts, to any per- son ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he, she, or they, may be appre- hended and convicted of the said offence. MELBOURNE. WHITEHALL, August I5tb, 1831. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, on the evening of Saturday, the 4th of June, a Fire took place on a Farm occupied by Mr. George Neate, sitnate at Monckton, in the county of Wilts, the property of Lieutenant- Gcneral Popham, which consumed Barns, Sheds, Corn, and Fanning Implements, to the value of £ 1500: And whereas it hath been further represented to the King, That, on the evening of the 1st of August, a Fire took place at a Field Barn, at the same place, and belonging to the same persons, which consumed a Barn, Sheds, and a con- siderable quantity of Corn and Straw, to the value of £ 100; and in both cases there is every reason to believe the same were wilfully and maliciously set on Fire : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Felonies before men- tioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person or persons • who actually set Fire to the same) who shall discover his I Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of Two Hundred Pounds is hereby olfered by the said Mr. George Neate, to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall dis- cover the offender or offenders concerned in the first- men- tioned Fire, and One Hundred Pounds ( with the like excep- tion) for the discovery of any persons concerned in the last- mentioned Fire ; and a further sum of One Hundred Pounds is hereby offered, in each case, to be paid by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, to any persons ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the offender or offenders concerned therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. SOUSE- BREAEINGi Between the hours of twelve o'clock at noon and twelve o'clock at night on Thursday, the 8th instant, the House of Mr, Holesgrove, No, 4, Bishop's Place, Fulham Road, Brompton, was entered ( during the absence of the family at the Coronation), by means of skeleton keys, and the follow- ing property Stolen therefrom, viz.— A brown cloth Cloak, with fur collar; one black Silk Dress, two Muslin Dresses, three Cotton ditto, three Gauze Scarfs, one brown Shawl, two lace Caps, seven white pocket Handkerchiefs, one brown Gauze Veil, one light cotton Waistcoat, one set Brooch, one Garnet ditto, two Garnet Rings, two Gold Pins, and a Coral Necklace. On Tuesday night, the 6th instant, or early the following morning, the shutter of Mr. Turnbull's window, of the Cheltenham Exchange, was cut through and the window broke, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz.— Four gold top Smelling- bottles ; one Silver Watch, engine- turned, capped and jewelled, lever ; about forty Gold Seals, fifty Gold Rings and Brooches, also several other articles.— A person, of the name of THOMAS LANE, is suspected of having committed the felony. He is about nineteen or twenty years of age, about five feet eight inches high, light hair, blue eyes, well grown, and rather inclined to be stout; generally dressed in a blue coat, drab kerseymere breeches, and sometimes wears light gaiters.— Whoever will give such information as will lead to the discovery of the parties, shall receive Twenty Pounds Reward, on appli- cation to Mr. George Russell, high constable, Cheltenham. On Thursday, the 8th instant, the House of Mrs. Saun- ders, Sutton- street, York- road, Lambeth, was broken and entered, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz.— Silver: two Table- spoons, four Tea- spoons, one Dessert- spoon, one Butter- knife, and one Fruit- knife and Fork. Also, a Pen- knife ; a Gold Toothpick, in an ivory case, in- laid with gold ; two Diamond Pins, a Turquoise ditto, a Topaz ditto, a plain Gold ditto ; one Brooch, with hair; two Pnnch- Iadles, a pair of Silver Sugar- tongs ; a Silver Scent- box, a Gold ditto; a Gold Pencil- case, a Silver ditto ; one Morocco Box, containing several Gold and Silver Coins; a pair of set Ear- rings, a pair of Ear- rings, set in gold ; one pair of Pearl Ear- drops, in a silver box ; a Gold Eye- glass, two polished Pebbles ; a Child's Coral, set in embossed sil- ver; and three Bristol- stone Clasps.— The felony is sus- pected to have been committed by some person well ac- quainted with the inmates and the house, as the dog ( which is very ferocious) was not heard to bark during the day, and was found on the outside of the premises, on the family's return. Early on Saturday morning, the 10th instant, the House of Mr. Cudderford, Martin's- place, York- street, Lambeth, was entered, by means of skeleton keys, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz.— A Rosewood Writing- desk, a Silver Hunting Watch, a Black Coat and Trousers, and several Neckerchiefs.— The House was left unprotected. On Sunday evening, the 11th instant, between the hours of six and eight o'clock, the House of Mr. Richard Tarcey, No. 11, Black- Prince- row, Walworth- road, was broken and entered ( by Union- court, leading from the main street to the back of the premises), by means of a skeleton key, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz.— One new figured Waistcoat, a black Coat nearly new, one olive Great Coat, one India Silk Handkerchief; four Shirts, nearly new, marked ' R. T.'; a Silver Table- spoon,' J. M. T.'; one ditto Tea- spoon; a black Waistcoat; two Shirts, marked ' E. T. T.'; a Silver Knife, with ivory handle; one Half- sovereign, and fifteen Shillings in silver; and a double- cased Metal Watch, marked on the hack ' D. P.'— The felony was committed during the absence of the family. Two Men, respectably dressed, were seen near the house during the evening. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. A man by the name of BEN BARNES a native of Essex, a Brazier by trade, going about to the country fairs playing the fiddle and another man with him playing the tambourine, is suspected of having stolen the poney belonging to Samuel Itaynhaui, also the Gig belonging to Mr. Wicks, and the Harness belonging to Mr, Moyes, all of Bury St. Edmunds, Stolen on Monday night the 12th instant, from out of a field atCoundon, a remarkably handsome Mottled Black Cart Horse, in excellent condition, six years old, fifteen hands one inch high, two white heels spotted, and a star in his forehead, the property of Mr. Stephen Oldham. Whoever will give information of the offender or offenders, so that he or they be convicted thereof, shall receive a reward of Ten Pounds from Mr. Oldham, and Ten Pounds from the Allesley As- sociation for the Prosecution of Felons. Stolen or Strayed, on Saturday night, the 27lh ultimo, or early the following morning, from the Spring Field, in the parish of Shipton- on- Chorwell, near Woodstock, Oxford, a Dark Bay Cart Mare ( supposed to be in foal), in good con- dition, eight years old, sixteen hands high, long tail, a little white in the face, and some white on the near hind leg; has lately been blooded, and the pin was in when missing; has large feet, and quite sound.— If Stolen, whoever will give such information as may lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, shall, on conviction, receive a Reward of Ten Guineas from the Woodstock Association for Pro- secuting Felons; and a further Reward of Five Guineas from Mr. J. Meears, Glover, Woodstock ; or Mr. Legg, 55, Friday- street.— If Strayed, any person restoring the said ^ lare will receive Five Pounds Reward. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 8lh instant, or early on the following morning, from a Field, near the Seven Stars, at Starch Green, Hammersmith, Two Horses, of the Nag kind, viz— One a Bay Gelding, rising five years old, fifteen hands and a half high, a star on the forehead, white hind legs, a switch tail, and a few white hairs on the right shoulder. The other a Dark Mouse- coloured Gelding, aged, sixteen hands high, black legs and mane, cut tail, a scar on the right shoulder, and several white saddle marks. Both Horses had been recently shod all round, and the farrier's name ' Dick- son,' on each shoe.— Whoever will give such information to Mr. Bridges, No. 3, Carpenter- street, Mount- street, Grosve- nor- square, as may lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, shall, on his or their conviction and recovery of the Horses, receive Ten Pounds Reward. Stolen, on Sunday night, the 11th instant, from a Stable, situate in the Long Brackland, in the occupation of Samuel Raynham, Butcher, Bury, Suffolk, a Bay Pony, about thir- teen hands high, four years old, white hind fetlocks, white shim down the face, a little white on the tip of the nose, and a long tail.— Whoever will give information of the offender or offenders, shall, on conviction, receive Five Pounds Re- ward, by applying to the said Samuel Raynham, of Buiy Saint Edmunds. Stolen or Strayed, on Saturday evening, the 10th instant, or early the following morning, from Portswood Farm, a Light Bay Horse, about fifteen hands high, six years old, a white star in the forehead, ewe neck, long tail, black legs, and a little white between the hoof and the fetlock joint of the hind legs.— Whoever will give such information of the offender or offenders as shall lead to their conviction, shall receive Ten Pounds Reward, on application to Mr. Curtis, Portswood Farm, Southampton. Found, on Sunday night, the 11th instant, in the Brixton Road, a Mare and Colt. The Mare is a bright Bay, with black legs, tail, and mane, and is thorough bred. The Colt is black, with a star in the forehead, and a long tail. They appear to have Strayed.— Application to be made at the Police Station, Brixton. Stolen, on Monday night the 5th instant, or early the fol- lowing morning, from a Field, in the occupation of Mr. W. Barns, at Seend, Wilts, a Hackney Mare, of a bright bay- colour, with lopped ears, switch tail, rising four years old, thick in the shoulder, white hind legs, white star in the fore- head, and a white stripe down the nose.— Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the discovery and convic- tion of the offender or offenders, shall receive Ten Guineas Reward, on application to Mr. Barns, at Seend, aforesaid; If Strayed, all reasonable Expenses will be paid onrestoring her to the said Mr. Barns. POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. ^^ w. p^—— M—^ warn^ m^^^ m Stolen, on Sunday night, the 4th instant, a Dark Bay Horse, the property of Air. W. Millns, Baker, Mansfield, out of a Field, near his Mill.— The Horse is three years old, with black marie and long tail ( if not altered), black legs, stands about fifteen hands and a half high, having a plain head with a little hollow above the eyes, a small sore spot upon the nose now nearly well, in good condition, and when he trots carries his tail a little on one side, and the mane is partly worn off by the collar and halter.— Ten Guineas Re- ward will be paid by Mr. Millns and the Mansfield Associa- tion equally, to any person or persons who will give such in- formation as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders: such Reward to be paid on conviction, and to be apportioned by the Committee, if requisite. On Saturday, the 3rd instant, a Brown Gelding, blind, supposed to be Stolen, was left for sale with Mr. White, in Sliarp's- alley. Cow- cross, Licensed Horse Slaughterer, who declined purchasing the same, until the person brought satisfactory proof that he was the owner. The Man ap- peared about twenty- five years of age, about five feet five inches in height, was of a sallow complexion, and dressed in a fustain frock coat, drab breeches and leggins, and laced boots: he stated himself to have a small Farm, near Guildford, and that his name was Smith.— Application is requested to be made to Mr. White, 18, Coldbath- square. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 31st ultimo, or early the following morning, from a Field, adjoining the Dwelling- house of the Rev. R. T. Coates, at Sopworth, Wilts, a Dark Brown Cob Horse, about fourteen hands high, aged, white feet ( the hind ones nearly white to the hocks), small white stripe on the nose, star on the forehead, short cut tail, scar near the off shoulder, a puffy swelling between the ears, cat- hammed, and a little sunk in the oil'hip.— Whoever will give such information as shall be the means of apprehend- ing and convicting the offender or offenders, shall receive Two Guineas Reward, on application to Messrs. Paul and Sons, Solicitors to the Tetbury Association; and a further Reward of Eight Guineas, on application to the Rev. R. T. Coates, at Sopworth aforesaid. Stolen, under pretence of Hiring, a valuable Mottled Grey Horse; with Brass- mounted Harness, and Handsome Stanhope Gig, nearly new.— The Horse is fourteen and a half hands high, rising six years old, with white switch tail and mane, chafed with collar and girth, marked or rubbed on the off front foot near the fetlock, is a crib- biter ; good action, and very fast.— A Brass- mounted Harness, with patent leather saddle and winkers.— A handsome Stanhope Gig, painted stone colour or light yellow, panelled back body, with half rails on ditto ; lined with bluo cloth ; leather tops to cushions; patent mail- cranked axle- tree; brass stock hoops to wheels, lancewood shafts, oval lamp sockets, brass shaft points, and top to dation- iron, and hangs low on three springs.— The above was hired on Saturday, the 20th ultimo, from Southampton to Andover, by a person, about live feet seven inches high, of fresh complexion, and about thirty- eight years of age, who gave his name as SIMMINS, with the understanding that it was to be returned the same day. He was dressed at the time in a black coat and trousers, striped waistcoat, chequered cravat, lace- up shoes, and olive- green great coat. He has been traced through Andover on the Newbury Road, and was seen to pass through Staines and Hounslow, on the London Road, on the evening of the 20th ultimo.— Any person who will give in- I formation to Mr. Puckridge, Southampton, or No. 73," Snow hill, London, shall, on recovery of the same, receive Ten Pounds Reward, and a further Reward of Ten Pounds oifC" conviction of the offender. Stolen or Strayed, on Saturday night, the 3rd instant, from Mr. Dickenson's Farm, at Wilsden, Middlesex, Three pair of Carriage Horses, viz.— One pair of dappled Greys, four years old, about fifteen hands and a half high, and well- bred ; one of them has a red patch on the side of the head, and the other has a small lump between his jaws, re- sembling the strangles. One pair of yellow Bays, four years old, sixteen hands high, has had rowels in the chest, well- bred, and very strong horses ; one of them has a white star on his forehead, and carries his tail aside. And one pair of dark Bays, five ^ ars old, upwards of sixteen hands high, without white, and very handsome. All of litem had switch tails, when stolen.— A Reward of Fifty Pounds will be given on the conviction of the offender or offenders, if Stolen; and if Strayed, a Reward of Five Pounds will be given, and all reasonable Expenses paid, to any person giving the necessary information that will lead to the reco- very of the Horses, on application to the said Mr. Dickenson. Found, in the possession of THOMAS HAYWARD alias AMOR alias DEVONSHIRE TOM, ( now in custody, on a charge of Housebreaking), a Bay Mare, about seven or eight years old, about thirteen or fourteen hands high, with a switch tail, dark brown legs, nearly black at the bottom parts from the knees, white streak down the forehead, some grey hairs about the head, thick in the quarters, and in very good condition. Stolen or Strayed ( supposed to be Stolen), from Abing- don Common, on Monday night, the 29th ultimo, a Black Gelding, about fifteen and a half hands high, nine years old, with white saddle and spur marks, a white spot on the mid- dle of the neck, switch tail, and two broken knees, not re- cently done. The property of Mr. Thomas Moss. — If Strayed, any person giving information so as to lead to the recovery of the Horse, shall be handsomely Rewarded. Stolen or Strayed, on Sunday, the 28th ultimo, from a Meadow, in the occupation of Mrs. Ventris, of Cherry- Hinton, about two miles from Cambridge, a Black Pony, about fourteen bands high, a star on the forehead, near foot behind white, and a switch tail.— Whoever will give inform ation of the said Pony, or return the same, if Strayed, to Mrs. Ventris, or to Mr. Parker, of Mildenhall, shall have all necessary Expenses paid, and be well Rewarded for their trouble. If Stolen, the same Expenses and Reward will be paid, on conviction of the offender. A person, who gave his name GEORGE JOHNSON, of Wicker, Sheffield, Hired a Horse and Gig, of Mr. Eels, in Mulberry- street, Sheffield, on Friday, the 26th ultimo, with the intention of going to Baslow and returning on the follow- ing day. He did not stay at either Baslow or Bakewell, but proceeded to Buxton, which place he left on Saturday, about three o'clock, and said he should proceed to Leek, in Staffordshire.— He is about five feet seven or eight inches high, fair complexion, and had on a blue coat and top boots. — A Cbesnut Pony, about fourteen hands high, seven years old, rather thin of flesh, a stroke of white down his face, white hind legs, light- coloured mane and tail, bis back rather galled with the saddle, which causes him to flinch when saddle or harness is put upon him ; a little hair oil' both knees, and a little rubbed off the top of his quarter, by the crupper.— A spindle- back Pony- Gig, painted yellow, not picked out with any other colour, a patent axletree and boxes, brass hoops to the wheels, the front caps chased, dation fence and body, rail- handles plated with brass, blue lining, the round part of the driving- cushion covered with black patent leather, and Eels, builder, Sheffield.— Any per- son lodging the said offender in any of His Majesty's Gaols, shall be handsomely Rewarded. Stolen, on Saturday morning, the 20th ultimo, from a Piece of Ground, at King's Heath, in the parish of King's Norton, Worcestershire, a Half- bred Brown JVJ are, five years old, fifteen hands high, with a switch tail, a little white on the hind feet, and a star in the forehead.— Any person giving such information as will lead to the apprehension and con- viction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Ten Pounds Reward from Mr. Daniel Whitehouse, of King's Heath. On Thursday, the 25th ult., CATHERINE CONNICK, ( who was convicted of Felony, at the Breconshire Summer Great Sessions, on the 21st of August 1830, and sentenced to be transported for life). Escaped from Guy's Hospital, Surrey, where she had been for the last fortnight, in conse- quence of a rupture and lits.— She is about twenty- eight years of age, five feet high, of dark complexion, and is a native of Wales. She has a husband, named John Connick, employed in Milford Dockyard.— Information to be given to R. Pople, constable, Union Hall Office. On Monday morning, the 29th ultimo, CHARLES MAPLE, of Fordwich, in the county of Kent, labourer, broke out of and made his Escape from the Cage of the town of Fordwich, in which he was confined, previous to his examination, on a charge of Felony.— He is about twenty- one years of age, five feet four or five inches high, is stout made, has blue eyes, brown hair, and a florid com- plexion: when he escaped had on only his shirt and white trousers.— Twenty Pounds Reward will be paid to any per- son who will give information so that the said offender may be retaken and convicted of the offence for which he was apprehended. GEORGE CROCKETT, a Convict, belonging to the Le viathan Hulk, at Portsmouth, effected his Escape, from the Dock- yard, at that place, on Monday, the 29lh ultimo.— He stands five feet seven inches high, brown hair, light grey- eyes, dark brown eyebrows and lashes, pug nose, small mouth, fresh complexion, oval visage, stout made, has two scars on the forehead, and one on the right wrist; by trade a printer; born at Newport, in the county of Salop.— He was convicted of Housebreaking, on the 20th March 1831 at Warwick, and sentenced to transportation for life. Also, a very remarkable pair of Scissars, as large as shears, maker's name ' Thurston Mulberry- coloured Watch, shape of a cockle- shell; an enamelled Vinegarette, with flowers, filigree gold inside ; a blue morocco Case, containing a Silver and Gold enamelled Brooch and Ear- rings, a Silver Buckle and a French Dia mond Buckle, and a French Diamond Necklace; a pair of Opera Glasses, of Ivory, in a red case; and a Gold ena- melled Buckle.— About ten o'clock, two Men were seen on the landing of the stairs where the Dressing- room is situated, by the butler's son, who heard them whisper and repeat ' Hush! Hush !' and on informing the servants below of this circumstance, not one of them took the least notice: two strange Women knocked at the door, about the same time, and inquired if Mrs. Baker lived there.— No marks of violence appear externally, nor is there any appearance of persons entering from the upper part of the house, which, with all the servant's boxes, have been searched, but nothing is traced.
