POLICE OR, HUE | 3TIL) LI06CIR TIG GAZETTE; AND CRY. No. 377. J SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, 1831. Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves and Offenders escaped, from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Perso? is charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. As 110 charge is made for the insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Properly in the Police Gazette and Hue and Cry, all Letters addressed to the Editor upon that sabjcct, are requested to be post- paid. ARSON AN3 WltPUl BtmNZNG. WHITEHALL, August 15th, 1831. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, on the evening of Saturday, the 4lh of June, a Fire took place on a Farm occupied by Mr. George Neate, situate at Moncktcn, in the county of Wilts, the property of Lieutenant- General Popham, which consumed Barns, Sheds, Corn, and Farming Implements, to the value of £ 1500: And whereas it hath been further represented to the King, That, on the evening of the 1st of August, a Fire took place at a Field Barn, at the same place, and belonging to the same persons, which consumed a Barn, Sheds, and a con- siderable quantity of Corn and Straw, to the value of £ 100: and in both cases there is every reason to believe the same were wilfully and maliciously set on Fire : ... His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Felonies before men- tioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person or persons who actually set Fire to the same) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of Two Hundred Pounds is hereby offered by the said Mr. George Neate. to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall dis- cover the offender or offenders concerned in the first- men- tioned Fire, and One Hundred Pounds ( with the like excep- tion) for the discovery of any persons concerned in the last- mentioned Fire ; and a further sum of One Hundred Pounds is hereby offered, in each case, to be paid by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, to any persons ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the offender or offenders concerned therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. WHITEHALL, August 2nd, 1831. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, about ten o'clock on the night of Saturday, the 30th of July last, a Barn, the property of Mr. James Cowdery, of Steventon Farm, near Abingdon, containing about twenty quaiters of Oats and Barley, unthrashed, was set on Fire, by some evil- disposed person or persons unknown, which, together with a Bean Rick, a Hay Rick, and Cart Hovel, were entirely consumed : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Felony before men- tioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them ( except the person who actually set Fire to the same) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they, may be appre- hended and convicted thereof: And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of Two H undred Pounds is hereby offered to any person ( except as aforesaid) who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so^ that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted ofthe said offence.— Such Reward to be paid by the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury. MELBOURNE. WHITEHALL, August 5tli, 1831. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That some evil- disposed person or persons did. late on Sa- turday night last, the 30th ultimo, or early on Sunday morn- ing, wantonly and maliciously set Fire to some Hay Stacks upon his Farm, in the parish of Wisbech Saint Mary, which entirely destroyed a Wagon Hovel, a Wagon, a Cart, and numerous other Farming Implements, as well as a Bullock Hovel, and nearly the whole of the Hay, the produce of twenty- five acres of land ; And whereas it hath been further represented unto the King, that several threatening letters, with the signature of ' Swing.' have been sent to or found upon the premises of the Inhabitants of the said parish : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the Felonies before men- tioned, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Par- don to any one of them ( except the person who actually set fire to the said Hay Stacks, and except the author or authors or writer or % vriters of the said letters) who shall discover his Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of One Hundred and Thirty Pounds is hereby offered by the prin- cipal Inhabitants and Chargehearers of the said parish, and Twenty Pounds by the said Mr. Scrimshaw, and a further sum of One Hundred Pounds by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, to any person who shall dis- cover the offender or offenders concerned in setting Fire to the said Hay Stacks ( except as aforesaid), so that be, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted of the said offence — And a Reward of Twenty Pounds is hereby offered by the Inhabitants of the said parish, to any person ( except the author or authors or writer or writers of the letters) who shall discover the offender or offenders con- cerned in sending the threatening letters before mentioned, so that he, she, er they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. On Friday morning, the 26th instant, between two and three o'clock, Mr. William Burbidge, of the King's Arms Livery Stables, Old- street- road, was in a Public- house, in Long Alley, when several persons attacked him in the Tap- room, and knocked him down, and after overpowering him with blows, succeeded in robbing him of Three Hundred and Fifty Pounds, in Bank of England Notes. The num- bers of the Notes are known.— Information to be given to Thomas Garton, or William Attfield, at Worship street Office. HOUSE- BStBAEIim* WHITEHALL, August 11th, 1831. Whereas it hath been humbly represented unto the King, That, between the night of Saturday the 30th July last and the morning of Monday the 1st instant, the Shop of Mr. John Wright, Jeweller, in Mosely- street, Newcastle- upon- Tyne, was broken and entered, and a large quantity of Plate and Jewellery, consisting of gold and silver watches, dia- mond, pearl, and other rings, and a variety of other articles, were stolen and carried away : His Majesty, for the better apprehending and bringing to justice the persons concerned in the said Felony, is hereby pleased to promise His most gracious Pardon to any one of them who shall discover bis Accomplice or Accomplices therein, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted thereof. MELBOURNE. And, as a further encouragement, a Reward of Fifty Pounds is hereby offered by the said John Wright, to any person who shall discover the said offender or offenders, so that he, she, or they, may be apprehended and convicted of the said offence. During the night of Tuesday, the 23d inst., the Dwelling- house of Mr. Paul Mullett, of- Bull's Cross, Enfield, was broken and entered, and the following articles Stolen there- and Out- Buildings, belonging to Mr. Edward Scrimshaw,) from, viz.— One large superfine drab Box Coat, one brown water- proof Great Coat, one green Cotton Umbrella, one brown Silk ditto; one Beaver Hat, almost new, maker's name ' Hands, Cheapside'; two Silver Table- spoons, four Tea ditto, one Silver- edged Waiter, one pair of Silver Spectacles, two Silver Castor- tops, and four Silk Pocket Handkerchiefs.— Information to be given to Thomas Garton, or William Attfield, police constables, Worship- street Office. On Monday afternoon, the 22d instant, between the hours of four and seven o'clock, the Dwelling- house of Mr. Har- vey, No. 11, Union- road. Lark- Hall- lane, Clapham, was entered, by means of a skeleton key, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz— A quantity of Silver Coin, one of Henry VIII. : three pair of Russia Sheets, and several Pillow- cases, marked ' A. H '; six Silver Tea- spoons, and four ditto Table- spoons, fiddle- edged ; one pair of Silver Sugar- tongs; also, a valuable red Silk Shawl; a Silver Scent- box, with the initials ' E. H.'; and a yellow glass Necklace.— The house was broken during the absence of Mr. Harvey and his Daughter, the only persons occupy- ing the house.— Two Men ( one known to be a suspicious character) were seen by the neighbours lurking about the premises, between four and five o'clock, and are sup- posed to bo the thieves. One is a stout Man, be had on a blue apron, a fustian coat ( apparently laiely washed), and crape on his hat: the other was a tall thin Man, dressed in blue. On Tuesday night, the 23d instant, the Shop of Mr. M'Crae, No. 119, High- street, Whitechapel, was broken and entered, and about One Hundred Pounds, in Notes and Silver, Stolen therefrom — The Thieves having made their entry from the next house ( which has been unin- habited for two years), went into the Counting- house, and after breaking open two Cash- boxes, left Bills and Checques on various Bankers, to the amount of Seven Hundred Pounds, strewed about the room. It is supposed that the Felony has been committed by some person who has been frequently in the habit of coming to the Shop. A centre- bit, crow- bar, phosphorus- box, lantern, & c., were found on the premises. Stolen, on Friday morning, the 26th instant, betwr, n the hours of two and five o'clock, from the House of the Honour- able George Chapple Norton, of No. 2, Prince's Court, Westminster ( which was entered by means of I' ' e ke> s), the following articles, viz.— One Silver Tea- pot ,. - t T. le- spoons, seven Dessert- spoons, four large Forks, :._.?!! Forks, three Tea- spoons, a Salt- spoon, and a pair of Sugar- tongs ; all with Crest, a Blackamoor's Head. Also, two Snuff- boxes, and a Child's Frock.— A chisel and a small crow- bar were left behind. On Saturday morning, Ihe 20th instant, between the hours of eight and nine o'clock, the Dwelling- bouse of Flizab"' 1'. George, No. 14, Hertford- street, Fitzroy- square, was en- tered, by means of a false key, and an Eight- day Clock ( maker's name ' John Peterkin, No. 25, Cleveland- street,' on the face of it), also the sum of two Pounds sixteen Shil- lings and Sixpence, Stolen therefrom. noitss ATJI5 CATTLE STSALSBT © . Stolen, on Thursday, the 25th instant, from opposite the ' Cape' public- house. Lime- street, Leadenhall maiket, a Butcher's Horse and Cart.— The Horse is a light Chesnut Gelding, six years old, with flaxen mane and tail, about fifteen hands high, with a star on the forehead, his fore feet rather large, and one of the hind legs white. The Cart is a light spring one, painted chocolate, with the name ' William Procter, Fair- street, Horslydown,' thereon.— They were seen to be taken away by a short Man, in a white jacket, in company with a tall Man, having the appearance of a Butcher, wearing a brown coat and blue apron.— Whoever may find the said Horse and Cart, and will give such in- formation as may lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, shall, on conviction, receive Five Pounds Re- ward, on application to Mr. William Procter, Butcher, Fair- street, Horslydown. 1410 POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 3rd instant, or early on the following morning, from a Stable, at Betlow, in the parish of Tring, Herts, a stout half bred Mare, six years old, rather rusty black colour, white feet, a small star on her forehead, and a short tail. The property of Mr. Thomas Cook. — Whoever will give such information so as the offender or offenders may be convicted thereof, shall receive a Reward of Ten Pounds, of Mr. Thomas Cook, of Betlow Farm.— The said Mare was seen about twelve o'clock on the Wednesday night, going through Ivinghoc, towards Gad- desden and Hemel Hempsted. Stolen, on Monday night, the 15lh instant, or early on the following morning, out of a Close, adjoining the Harrow Inn, near Hinckley, Leicestershire, a Self- coloured Biown Nag Horse, with black legs, cut tail, five years old, fifteen hands high, able to carry fifteen stone, and in very good condition. The property of Mr. Crofts, of the Harrow Inn — Whoever will give such information as may lead to the discovery of the offender or offenders, shall, on his or their conviction, receive Twenty Guineas Reward from the said Mr Crofts. Stolen, on Monday night, the 22d instant, from a Field, near Chester Green, in the Borough of Derby, a strong Brown Hackney Horse, rising seven jears, nearly fifteen hands high, short cut tail, a star on his face, bis sheath large with a few warts upon it, and the skin rubbed off his far shoulder.— Whoever will give such information to Mr. Hodgson, Saint Mary's Gate, Derby, as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Five Guineas Reward. Stolen, on Friday morning, the 19th instant, from a Farm, in the Mareham on the Hill Allotment, in Wildmore Fen, a I Black Cart Mare, four years old, is a sort of a tanned or bad black, rather low in condition, a white star in her fore- head, high upon her poll, has a slight collar mark nearly round, about fifteen hands high, and had a switch tail when stolen. The property of Mr. Thomas Kemp and Mr. Joshua Johnson.— Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall, on such conviction, receive a Reward of Ten Guineas from the Treasurer of the Horncastle Old Association for the Prose- cution of Felons, in addition to Ten Guineas offered by Messrs. Kemp and Johnson. Stolen on Saturday night the 20tli instant, or early on the following morning, from a field near the dwelling house of Mr. John Chettle, in French Drove, Thorney Fen, a Bay Nag Mare, his property. The said Mare is five years old, low in condition, has a white star in her forehead, cut tail, a scar from a wound on the front of her off fore leg. rather to the inside and reaching nearly to the hoof, and a little white upon one hind heel. Whoever will give such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receiveFiveGuineas Reward from the said Mr. Chettle. Stolen, on Friday night, the 19th instant, or the following morning, out of a Field, at Mill Pool Hill, in the parish of King's Norton, in the county of Worcester, near Birming- ham, a Blight Chesnut Horse, aged, about fourteen hands and a half high, has the appearance of a roggil, shews a good deal of blood about the head, low on the shoulders, his two fore feet are large and rather flat, several white sad- dle- marks on the back, and a dent or hollow on the right side of the neck.— Whoever will apprehend the offender or 00' enders shall, on conviction, receive Five Pounds Reward, from Thomas Pountney, Mill Pool Hill, King's Norton. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 18th instant, or early the following morning, from a Field, near Hoo Common, aliout three miles from Rochester, Kent, a Black Gelding, three yeais old, fourteen hands and a half high, white star on the ' forehead, has a sore under the throat from the strangles, and long tail when stolen. The property of Thomas May.— Whoever will give such information as may lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Horse, shall receive Five Pounds Reward, on application to the said Thomas May, or to Thomas Cook, Rochester. Stolen, on Friday night the 12th instant, or early the fol- lowing morning, from a meadow belonging to Mr. Chapman, of Rigewell, in the county of Essex, a Hay Mare about four or five years old, and thirteen hands high, long tail, the hair is off her eyes, and she goes a little lame behind, the pro- perty of Mr. Thomas Surridge, of Rigewell. Five Pounds Reward will he paid to any person or persons by whose means the offender or offenders shall be apprehended and convicted, on application to Mr. Surridge, of Rigewell, or Mr. R. Cauey, Bury. Stolen, on Sunday night, the 14th instant, or early on the following morning, from Long Ashton, Somerset, a Bay Mare, seven years old, fourteen hands and a half high, rather low before, a white streak down the forehead, white leg on the off side behind, and has a roll mark under the bedy. Ten Pounds Reward will be paid, on the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the Mare, on application to Mr. Levy Star, Long Ashton, near Bristol.— \ lso, at the same time, a Light Bay Hackney Mare, rising four years old. about fourteen hands and a half high, small white star on her forehead, rather heavy in her head, small eyes, and switch tail. Barony Lanark cotton- spinner 24 5 Si dark " " 1 ~ 1 black POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. 1411 on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the said Mare, by applying to Mr. James Tovey, Winford, near Bristol, Somerset. Stolen or strayed on the night of the 2oth instant, from a Pasture Ground in the parish of Bradwell. Bucks, a light- coloured Grey Cart Gelding, four years old, sixteen hands high, has lately had a kick on the off fore leg above the knee, and one side of the mouth a little chafed with the bridle. The horse is supposed to have been ridden thro igh Bradwell Turnpike, towards Stony Stratford, about twelve o'clock the same night, by a man in a light coloured frock. If stolen, whoever will give such information as may lead to the ap- prehension of the person or persons who stole the said horse, so that the offender or offenders may be prosecuted, shall, on his or their conviction, be paid a Reward of Ten Pounds by Mr. Baily, of Shenley House, Bucks; if strayed, any person who will bring the said horse to Mr. Baily, shall be rewarded for their trouble, and paid all reasonable ex- penses. Detained on suspicion, a man who gives his name LAW- RENCE MORONEY, ( with Irish accent.) having in his possession ( supposed to be stolen) a very valuable Light Bay Cob Horse, fourteen hands three inches high, five years old, has a white nose, two white hind heels, and the shoes are marked W. Parker. Any person having lost the above, may see the same by applying to James Wild, or Wm. Bland, Constables, Sheffield. Lost or stolen from a field belonging to Mr. W. Turner, at Birmingham Heath, near Birmingham, in the night of Thursday, August 25th, 1811, a bright Bay Cob about nine years old, about fourteen hands high, black legs, near hind fetlock white, white strip on the face, beautiful black mane, and short tail ; tips on his feet, when in the field ; his off fetlock and left hock, above the joint, have a scar upon them, occasioned by an old bruise from a halter. Chaplin and Co., 36, Camomile- street, City.— The Horse is a dark brown colour, of the cart breed: and the Cart was covered with a black tarpauling. Stolen, on Monday night, the 15th instant, or early on the following morning, from Portishead, Somerset, a Black Gelding, about fourteen bands and a half high, rising five years old, a small star on the forehead, a small white stripe on the nose, and a switch tail.— Whoever will restore the said Gelding, will receive Five Guineas Reward, on convic- tion of the offender or offenders, by applying to Mr. John Wilmott, Portishead, near Bristol. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 3rd instant, or early the following morning, from a Meadow, near IIoo Street, four miles from Rochester, Kent, a rusty Black Mare, about five years old, fourteen hands high, the near hind foot has a bruise on the fetlock joint, the off hind foot white under the fetlock joint, with saddle marks on the nearside, and switch tail when stolen; the property of Stephen Butcher.— Who- ever will give information to George Butcher, Victualler, Chequers, Hoo, Kent, shall, on the conviction of the offender or offenders, receive Five Pounds Reward. He was at Hull, on the 16th instant, in com- pany with some sailors, where he got the Notes changed, and he then wore a blue coat, a sailor's cap, yellow striped waistcoat, brown cloth trousers, light shoes, and had a sailor's dress in a bundle; and, by his conversation, his in- tention then appeared to be to go to America from Liverpool. ISABELLA DOUGLAS stands charged with stealing, about ihe 21st of June last, the following articles, the pro- perty of Mr. Herman, of No. 9. New Broad- street, City, whose service she left at that period, viz— One carved Tor- toise- shell Fan, initials ' S. H.'; one Ivory Card case, in a green case; one carved Mother- of- pearl Paper- cutter; one carved Tortoise- shell dressing Comb, eight ditto side Combs, and ono ditto coarse and fine Comb; one plain Gold Snap; one Gold Brooch, with glass and hair in centre; eight or ten pair of Sheets, and four or five Table- cloths.— The said ISABELLA DOUGLAS is about twenty- five years of age, five feet high, and rather stout, she has dark hair and eyes, with a pale complexion, and speaks with a broad Scotch accent: she stated that she had a relative living at No. 104, Albany- street, named Carr ( a Violin- playrr at Covent Garden Theatre), which statement, upon inquiry of the Police, proves to be incorrect. She was seen last Sunday, near Moorfields, in which neighbourhood it is supposed she now is. THOMAS REEVES, about thirty years of age, five feet four inches high, of sallow complexion, very thin, dark hair and whiskers ( rather inclined to red), and dressed in shabby black,— has Absconded with about Seventy Yards of Black Satin, entrusted with him to weave. On Tuesday, the 9th instant, a Man, n. imed CURRIE, went to the Shop of Thomas Wilkinson, a Silversmith, in Piccadilly, and obtained therefrom, by false pretence.-, the following articles, viz — Four Table- spoons, eight ditto Foiks, eight Dessert ditto, eight ditto Spoons, and one Fish- knife ; all Silver, and Fiddle- handled.— The said CURRIE i about five feet eight inches high, slender made, and was dressed in a shabby blue coat, buff waistcoat, and dark trousers. His Wife is housekeeper to Mr. Smith, of Saint James's- place; he resided, two months ago, with Dr. Davies, of Hanover- square ; his Brother lives waiter at Huntley's Coffee- house, at the corner of Bear- street, Leices- ter- square ; and has another Brother a Green- grocer, living on Clerkeuweil green ; his Mother resides with Mrs. Gre- gory, at Low Layton, in the county of Essex : he frequents Blockey's, a public- house, in Jermyn- street, Saint James ; and also the sign of the Angel, on Holborn- bridge, where he desired his wife to direct his letters. E. iifa'ESOIJS I3rPOS. 3MEATIOWS On the 27th ultimo, a Girl, named Mary Connell, aged thirteen years, was enticed from her Father's residence, No. 2, Srnith's- buildings, Bishopsgate- street, by a Man named NICHOLAS MARTIN ( now. in custody), and she has not since been heard of. By some words which the Prisoner MARTIN has spoken, it is suspected she is at Cambridge.— She is a round- faced Girl, with short dark brown hair, greyish ejes, and has the mark of a leaf on her body: she had on a yellow silk frock, and black stockings, when she went away. The Prisoner is remanded till Thurs- day next. Two Men were brought to Worship- street Office, on Wed- nesday, the 24th instant, and charged before the Magistrate, with being found at a quarter before five o'clock in the morning, in Earl- street, Finsbury- square, where a grating had been removed ; and they are suspected to have been there with intent to commit felony. They had with them a regular set of joints, for screwing together as a rod, to hook property out of areas.— One called himself JOHN FISHER, lie is a dark Man, about thirty years of age, and about five feet seven inches high ; the other is named HENRY KING, about thirty- three years of age, and about five feet six inches high. They refused to give any account of them- selves, and are remanded till to- morrow, as it is strongly suspected they have committed felonies, and may be recog- nised by the officers of some of the Police Establishments. — [ See Persons Charged.] Escaped from custody, on Sunday, the 2lst instant, GEORGE LITTLE, labourer, of light complexion and hair, about five feet seven or eight inches high, and dressed in a long smock- frock and high shoes. Supposed to be in the neighbourhood of Whitechapel, having lately worked in a Distillery there. He was discharged from the Police a short time ago.— Whoever will give information to Robert Resker, constable of Writtle, near Chelmsford, that will lead to his apprehension, shall be handsomely rewarded, and all reasonable expenses paid. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 24th instant, from the neighbourhood of Well- street, East Smithfield. a piece of Timber, nineteen feet in length, by seven inches by five. The property of Mr. North, of the Commercial- road. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 24th instant, or early the following morning, from the House of Mr. Matthew Robinson, No. 1, Gloucester Terrace, near the East India Road, in the parish of Bromley, Middlesex, a pair of Silver Table- spoons, marked ' D. M. R.'; a Crape Shawl, and some Silver Money. Several other articles were packed up by the Thieves to be taken away; and a bundle of things which had been stolen from the House was found in the yard; and another bundle was found in an adjoining yard. — The felony is supposed to have been committed by per- sons connected or acquainted with the House. On Wednesday, the 24th instant, about Three Hundred Pounds, in Bank and Country Notes, and the following Coins, were Stolen from Mr. Lees, Queens, of Burton- on- Trent, viz.— One Queen Anne Guinea, one George the Second Guinea, ons Silver Indian Coin ; one Shilling, stamped ' J. Lees'; one Shilling, engraved ' E. On Thursday morning, the 25th inst., between the hours of seven and eight o'clock, the following articles were Stolen from the House of Mr. Saunders, No. 4. Acton- place, Kingslnnd- road, viz— a Violoncello ; arid a Hat, maker's name ' Wilson. Gracechurch- street.'— The felony was com- mitted during the absence of the Servant, who had left the back door open. A Boy's seal- skin cap was left behind.
