GAZETTE; AND CRY. ^ utioritt)* No. 369.] SATURDAY, JULY 30, 1831. Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity us can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. POLICE OR, HUE As no charge is made for tho insertion of Articles relating to Stolen Properly in tho Police Gazette and Hue and Cry, all Letters addressed to the Editor upon that • abject, are requested to bo post- paid. ROBBERY FROM THE PERSON. On Monday niuht, tho 26th instant, about twelve o'clock, Ebenezer Radford, of Montague Terrace, Peckham Lane, Deptford, was returning from Deptford. by the Canal, to bis residence, when he was suddenly seized, by two Men, near the Halfpenny- hatch, who dragged him some distance, and told him it was useless to make any noise, as they intended taking his life; they then attempted to suffocate him, but, by groat exertions, he jumped op, and ran several yards, cry- ing ' Murder!' H » was then overtaken by the same parties, who dragged him through some water, and threw him into a ditch, whore be was discovered, senseless, about four o'clock oo the following morning. houSE- BReAKING Stolen, on Wednesday night, tho 27th instant, from the Premises of Mr. Vincent Dowling, No. 4, Norfolk- street, Strand, tho following articles, viz.— Silver: one Tea- pot, ono Cream- ewer, twelve Tea- spoons, four Salt- spoons, two Dessert- forks, two Salt- stands, one lop of Mustard- pot, six Table- spoons ; and sixteen Plated Dinner- forks, with Crest, a Hawk holding a Dagger.— The Thieves gained admission by picking a common latch lock of an empty bouse ad- joining. On Wednesday, the 27th instant, the Dwelling- bouse of Mr. Andrew Welldon, of No. 29, Worcester- street, in the parish of Saint Saviour, was entered, by means of skeleton keys, and the following property and monies Stolen there- from, viz.— One Metal Watch, maker's name ' Nelms,' with initials ' B G.' on the case ; seven rows of coral Beads, with silver snap; one Garnet Ring, one white paste ditto; one pair of Garnet Ear- rings, with drops; eighteen rows of black Garnet Beads, with black flat snap ; and twenty- one Sovereigns, in a canvas bag.— Information to be given to G. Black man, constable, Union Hull Oflice. On Wednesday night, the 20th inst., the Brewery Oflice of Messrs. Jennings, of Now Windsor, was broken and en- tered, and various Coins and other articles, of considerable value, were Stolen therefrom, viz.— A Double Sovereign, a Double Napoleon, a Quarter Guinea Piece of George III., several Spanish Dollars, and a variety of old Gold and Sil- ver English Coins, of various reigns ; four pair of antique small Silver Shoe- buckles, three Silver Stock- buckles, a set of large Silver Coal Buttons, marked ' I. C.'; a set of small Silver Waistcoat Buttons, marked with a flower; some plain Silver Buttons; a Lady's Mourning- ring, with initials ' I. I.' in pearls; a small Silver Snuff- box, marked ' I. I.'; aq old- fashioned oval horn Snuff- box; a very small Silver Box, with mother- of- pearl top, marked ' E. P.' or ' 15. C.', a man fishing raised on the lid ; and various other articles.— Whoever will give such information t> Messrs. Jennings, of the offender or offenders, as will lead to his or their convic- tion, shall, upon such conviction, receive Thirty Guineas Reward. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. On Friday night, the 8th instant, n Bay Mare, thorough bred, was missed, supposed to have been stolen, from a Field adjoining the Turnpike- gate, at Bythorn, in the county of Huntingdon. — She is about fifteen bands high, aged, has had a Foal or two, having been kept as a Breeding Mare; but not proving with Foal this year, had been lately used, and her tail cut even; has a black mane and tail, and a star on her forehead, and is particularly handsome.— Five Pounds Reward will be paid, upon the conviction of the offender or offenders, upon application to Mr. Field, at Royston. in Huntingdonshire ; or Mr. Garton, at the Public Office, Wor- ship- street. Stolen or Strayed from a Field belonging to Mr. W. Turner, at Birmingham Heath, near Birmingham, on the night of Wednesday, July 20th instant, a Bright Bay Cob, about nine years old, about fifteen hands high, black legs, near hind fetlock white, white strip on the face, beautiful black mane, and sh" rt tail; tips on his feet, when in the field ; his off fellock and left bock, above the joint, have a scar upon them, occasioned by an old bruise from a halter. Also, a Bay Colt, fifteen hands high, slouched ears, three years old, long mane and tail. And a Dark Grey Galloway, four years old, with long mane and tail.— If Stolen, whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, shall upon conviction receive Twenty Guineas Reward; if Strayed, any person restoring the horses, or giving information of them, shall be handsomely rewarded for their trouble, and all expenses paid, on application to Hammond, Turner and Sons, Snow- hill, or to Mr. Rcdfern, Public- Office, Birmingham. On Tuesday, tho 21st ultimo, two persons, named JOSEPH SIMMONS, and LAZARUS MARKS. Hired a Mare and Cart, of Thomas Shaw, of Aspley Guise, Bed- fordshire, to go to Newport Pagnel Fair, and not returning, it is supposed they have Stolen the same. — The said JOSEPH SIMMONS is about five feet six inches high, marked with the small- pox, has an impediment in his speech, and a slight cast in his eye ; he wears a dark coat, light waistcoat, and black trousers. LAZARUS MARKS is a stout man, of fair complexion, and small nose ; wears a blue coat, dark waistcoat, ami blue trousers.— The Mare is about thirteen hands high, of a dark brown colour, blind, white feet behind, short tail, and a little galled on the back from tho saddle. The Cart is painted green, with turned axletree, and the tail- board hangs in two parts. On Wednesday, the 20th instant, Mr. Clarke, or Park- place, East- street, Walworth, left a Horse and Cart in charge of a Boy, near the Pump in High- street, Norton- Falgate, and went into the Shop of Mr. Gardner: he re- mained about ten minutes, and upon coming out, found the Boy had decamped with tho Horse and Cart.— The Carl contained a light drab Box Coat with capes, a Reticule Basket, two bottles of Spirits, thirty quires of Glass Paper, and other articles.— The Boy was about fifteen or sixteen years of age, five feet three inches high, and was drcrsed in a dirty smock frock and fustian trousers. The Horse and Cart have since been found, but the great Coat has not. Stolon, on Monday night, the 18th instant, out of a Piece of Ground, belonging to Mr. William Shorthouse, at Mose- ley, an aged Bright Bay Gelding, about fifteen hands and a half high, with cut tail, white saddle mark on the near side, and black legs, also a large blemish on the fetlock joint on the near fore leg, and the hair rubbed off.— Whoever will give such information to the said Mr. W. Shorthouse. the Constable of King's Norton, or to Mr. Redfern, at the Pub- lic Oflice, Birmingham, as may lead to the apprehension of the offender or offenders, shall, upon conviction, receive Ten Guineas Reward, from Mr. P. M. James, the Treasurer of the King's Norton and Moseley Association for the Prose- cution of Felons. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 19th instant, from Blaxhall, in tho county of Suffolk, a Black Gelding, eight years old, about fifteen hands high, has good eyes, the off bind foot while, cut tail, and in good condition for work. Also, a Bright Bay Pony, four years old, thirteen hands high, has good eyes, switch tail, in good condition, and the off fore foot is a little swelled, having been recently sprained. The property of Eden Tyler.— Information to be given to James King, Constable, Saxmundham. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 20lh instant, or early the following morning, from the Village of Wisborough Green, in Sussex, a dark Chesnut Mare, with two or three small while spots on the near side, bushy mane ( inclined to fall on the near side), switch tail, about fourteen hands high, and about nine years old.— The Property of Mr. William Saunders. On Sunday, the 3rd instant, a Horse arid Chaise wore obtained, from the Stables of C. Whatman, of the White Lion, Chatham, by a respectable looking Man, to go to Cranbrook, Kent, and has not been since heard of— The Chaise was fresh painted green, lined with blue cloth, of old make, and was drawn by a light Bay Mare, with black logs, a white fetlock on the near hind leg, a star on the fore- head, blind of the near eye, about fourteen hands and a half high, six years old, and had on brass- mounted Harness with Crest.— Three Guineas Reward will be given to any person who will give such information as may lead to tbe convic- tion of the offender and recovery of the property. Informa- tion to be given to C. Pattison, Constable, Chatham. Found, on Thursday, the 14th instant, in the neighbour- hood of Devonport, in the possession of a party of Gipsies, tho following Property, supposed to have been Stolen, viz. — Twelve Horses, one Donkey, and one young Mule ; also, one Silver Watch, No. 3049, the maker's name erased with a file; thp last persons who appear *( » hHve repaired the said Watch are Samuel Tyte, Warminster ; and James Snelling, Newton Abbott. One large Silver, Ladle, with crest, a Who. atshoaf; two Silver Tea- pots, one of which has a silver handle. Besides a great quantity of miscellaneous Articles; found in a Car, marked ' Peter Hicks, Brimpton, Berks, Rat Catcher.' The three Men have given their names PETER HICKS, WILLIAM BELCHER, and THOMAS STANLEY.— Information to be given to James Day, peace officer, Town Hall, Devonport. Supposed to be Stolen, by a man named JOHN DYER, ( who has since Absconded), from Hemel Hempstead, a light coloured Chesnut Horse, with switch tail, long mane, blind of the off eye, about fourteen hands high, aged, collar marked on both shoulders, a white star on the forehead, white saddle marks, and marks of the bridle on each side of the head under the ears. Stopped, by the Constable of Laindon, near Billericay, supposed to have been Stolen, a dark Brown Mare, aged, about fifteen hands high, with black legs, both hind heels white, short cut tail, a mark from the collar on the off shoulder, a large white saddle mark on the near side, arfd a small one on the off side, also rather thick in the wind.— The Mare was in the possession of two suspicious charac- ters, one of whom decamped, the other is in custody.— Ap- plication to be made to Mr. William Curtis, Constable, of Billericay, Essex. Two Boys were stopped, at Brentford, by a Police Con- stable of the T Division, with an Ass in their possession, which they confessed to have Stolen from the neighbour- hood of Oxford. The Ass is a very fine one, and lonjj in the back.— The Boys are remanded for a week. Stolen, early on Saturday morning, the 9th instant, from a Field, at Brook Farm, near Westbury, Wilts, in the occu- pation of Anna Hooper, a Dark Brown Gelding, fourteen hands and a half high, three years old, a white stripe down the face, and switch tail lately docked. The property of Mr. Stephen Noad, of Brook Mill.— Whoever will give such information as shall lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, shall receive Five Pounds Reward, on application to » he said Mr. Noad. Stolen, on Friday night, the 8th instant, or early the fo'- lowing morning, out of a Field, belonging to Mrs. Wilde, of Hodnet, in the county of Salop, a Brown light Cart Mare aged, fifteen hands high, blaze down the forehead, near fore fellock white, grey below the knees, the near knee has been broken, white leg behind, and a switch tail.— Fifty Pounds Reward will be paid by the Hodnet Association for the Pro- secution of Felons, on the apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. 1378 POLICE GAZETTE; Oil, HUE AND CRY. 121 On Saturday morning. the 16th instant, a Horse and Chaise were obtained, under false pretences, t> y a Man, represent- ing himself to lie Mr. Grey, residing at No. 2, Devonshire- street, Portland- place.— The Stanhope i. s lined with drah, painted green and black, and has on the caps of the wheels ' E. Prince, Harcourt- street.' Furniture on the Brass Har- ness, with brass rosette on the Bridle, and a small silver horse's head in the centre. A Bay Mare, with white legs and laee, switch tail, fifteen hands one inch high. The pro- perty of Mi. Jerromes, Livery Stable Keeper, Upper Mon- taguc- strcet, Montague- square— The person had on a black surtout coat, is about five feet seven inches high, and a scar on his lip not healed. The Marc i. s very much pulled in the near front leg.— Any person giving such information as may lend to the conviction of the olleudcr, will be handsomely Rewarded. Stolen, on Monday night, the 11th instant, or early on the following morning, from a Field, in the occupation of Mr. Bryant, of Walham Green, and of Dacre- street, Westmin- ster, a red and white spotted ( low. of the Aldcrney Breed.— Information to he given at the Police Station, New- way, Westminster. On Wednesday, the 20th instant, the following Bank Notes were Stolen from No. 20, Connaught- tcrrace, Edg- ware- road, viz — One Twenty- pound Note, number known, but not the date; one Ten- pound No e. No. 618; and four Fivo- pound notes, No*. 27/ 6, 2* 78, 2770, and 2780, eacli dated 2nd June 1831. The properly of Mrs. Ann Carey.— The Notes and three Sovereigns were placed in a closet, and had some paper put on them ; and, on the same even- ing, Mrs. Carey discovered a lire in the closet, and found all the papers and ( what she supposed) the notes entirely burnt. One of the notes has since been traced to a person in the Edgware- road.— A Woman, who was a lodger in the house, of the name of CHRISTIAN A ECKARDT, a na- tive of Germany, and who was present when the notes were supposed to have been burnt, is suspected of the robbery. She left London, on the following Saturday, by the'Tele- graph ' Southampton Coach, with two Trunks— one a large black leather, with brass nails, and ' W. E.' on the top, in brass nails, and a cord tied to one pt the handles with the name written on it; the other was a square black leatherj trunk. She paid for her place in the name of ROULETTE, but represented that she had bought the place of a Lady of that name, who could not go to Winchester on that day.— She is rather stout, sallow complexion, black hair and eye- brows, and dressed in a dark green and blown chequered gown, a black shawl with Indian pattern border, and straw bonnet, lined with rose- coloured silk and rose- coloured and green ribbon. Stolen, on Sunday, the 24th instant, from the House of Mrs. Carey, No. 20, Connaught- terrace, Edgware- road, an old- fashioned Gold Watch, single case, winds up in the front, and maker's name ' Barwise and Son, London'; one Gold Ring, and four Gold Seals ( one engraved ' A. C.\ and another' W. A.'), appended by a dark blue leather: also, a pair of black kerseymere Trousers. The property of Mr. Arundell.— By SUSAN GREEN, who was hired as a Ser- vant, on Thursday, the 21st instant, and who has absconded. She is about eighteen or nineteen years of age, marked with the small- pox, very dark hair and eyes, about five feet, five inches high, and dressed in a black gown, with a white straw bonnet trimmed with black ribbon. She lately lived with Mr. Diggen, No. 17, Serle's- plaoe, Lincoln's- iun- fields, Law Stationer. On Wednesday morning, the 27tli instant, about six o'clock, William Kin*, of No. 21, Saint Anne street, West- minster, had his pocket picked of Eight Sovereigns, by his fellow Lodger, CH ARLI5S COLL1S, who is five feet four inches high, lame w ith the left leg, has rather sandy hair, grey eyes, stammers in his speech, and gets his living by sitting with a paper to induce charitable relief. — Informa- tion to be given at the Station House, New- way, Tothill- strect, Westminster. Stolen, on Tuesday afternoon, the 2Gth instant, from the Printing Office of Mr. Thomas, Red- Lion- strect, Borough, a Silver Watch, with Steel Chain, and Gold Seal; the pro- perty of J. Taylor, one of Mr. Thomas's Workmen.— The Thief's name is GEO RGB SPR1NGATTE : heisfive Icet six inches high, has a pale complexion, dark hair combed particularly straight over his forehead, and is rather bow legged ; when he left, he was dressed in a black coat and brown trousers. A Man, named JOHN MAYS, about five feet six inches high, with light hair, small light whiskers, thin face, sallow complexion, has a mark on the hack of his neck whete ho has been cupped,— is suspected of Stealing, from the per- son of Walter Swift Wallord, Ten Sovereigns, on Thursday, the28th instant— He was dressed in an olive fustian jacket, black jean w aistcoat much worn, large cord breeches, black crape on his hat; and is supposed to have gone to Harrall, near Bedford, of which place he is a native. ISLWEOIRS INFORMATIONS Detained at Rickmansworth on Saturday the " 23d instant, a Horse and Cart; the Horse is a dark brown, fifteen hands high, aged, a cut tail, hind legs white, and the near fore leg white, and a ring of white round the off fore foot about the hoof, white mark on the under lip, star in the forehead ; the cart is a dark green with a dark coloured tilt, name on the cart is James Atchison, Castigney Place, St Luke's, No. 197869, ( printed uiiderthe name oil the cart,) Middlesex, London, in white letters. Description of the men in whose possession the Horse and Cart were found: JOHN LION, live feet three inches high, light hair, light complexion, about twenty- four years of age, cord trowsers, low shoes, black coat and waistcoat, and black hat; by trade a eordwainer. JOSEPH FORRISTER, about fortv years of age, live feet nine inches high, thin face, lost the right eye, pock- marked, dark hair rather grey ; wears a long brown smock frock, striped waistcoat, kerseymere trowsers, cloth gaiters, and high shoes; says he is a Warwickshire man, but has been in London seven years: had in their possession implements for house- breaking, some ornaments for fire grates, in a bag two metal teapots, and a Japanned bread basket; says the horse and cart is hired of a man whose name is on the cart; the men have been committed to the House of Correction at Saint Alban's, for three months each. Description of a Man, who has escaped from New South Wales, and is supposed to be a convict: — It is stated, that about five days after the Ship " Royal Admiral" left Sid- ney, the said Man was found concealed in the Ship. He said his Name was WILLIAM CHURCHILL, that he was by trade a Tailor, and had carried on business in O'Conneli Street, Sidney, where his circumstances had become em- barrassed, and that he had concealed himself in the Ship to avoid his creditors. He was brought home in the Ship as a Prisoner, and on her arrival at Northfleet, on Saturday, he effected his escape. He is about twenty- six years of age, sallow complexion, has light hair, and appeared to be care- worn; be has two small blue lines below his right eye; is about five feet seven and a half inches high, and says he is a native of Morden, in Herefordshire. He had on when lie left the Ship, a blue coat with bright buttons, black waistcoat, drab mixture trousers, while shirt, black silk handkerchief, but was without a hat, shoes, or stockings. Escaped from tho Gaol of Bideford, in the county of Devon, on the morning of Monday, the 4th instant, WIL- LIAM BIRD, convicted at the Bideford Midsummer Quarter Sessions, on Monday, the 27th day of June last, of feloniously stealing a pig, and sentenced to six months' im- prisonment.— The said WILLIAM BIRD has light hair, [ See last page. He wore at the time of his escapo a light fustian jacket, cord brceches and gaiters, and a light waistcoat, and is supposed to have gone to Bristol. pROPErTY STOLEN. Stolen, on Monday, the 25lh instant, an old- fashioned Gold enamelled Watch, maker's name ' Barwise, Saint Martin's- lane,' with three Gold Seals, and one Gilt Seal. The initials ' A. C.' is engraved on one of the Gold Seals, and ' W. A.' on the Gilt Seal : they were attached to the Watch by a picce of blue leather. Stolen, on Tuesday, tlio 19th instant, from the Dwelling- houso of Thomas Howes, at Lampton, near Hounslow, the following articles, viz — One Silver Watch, the dial- plate is cracked, and a hit chipped oil'; also, one Table- spoon, with 4 R. H. H.' engraved on it.— By two Men : one of whom is about five feet six inches high, and has large dark whiskers ; the other is about fivo feet nine or ten inches high, and rather thin : they were last seen going into Milton- street, near the Yorkshire Stingo. Stoleu, on Sunday, the 2Uh instant, from the ' Three Compasses ' Public- house, in Little Marylebone- street. a largo fluted Silver doublo Snuff- box, from four to five ounces weight; it opens on the top and at the bottom. On Tuesday afternoon, the 26th instant, Mrs. Garrett, of the White Hart Public- house, Millbank- row, Westminster, while viewing a rowing match from a window, had her pocket picked of a Parse, containing Twenty Sovereigns, and Twelve Shillings in silver.— The Thief is a tall stout Man, of respectable appearance, with a fair complexion, and thick whiskers; he is about thirty years of age, and had on a light green body coat, and a fashionable hat.— In- formation to be given at the Station House, New- way, Westminster. Stolen, on Tuesday morning, the 26th instant, about ten o'clock, from the House of Mr. Gindcr, No. 12, Upper Raneleigh- street, Pimlico, a massive Silver Tea- spoon, King's pattern; and one Shilling and Fourpence.— By a Man, about five feet six inches high, thin, and of gentle- manly appearance ; he had on n black hat, black or blue frock coat, tightly buttoned ; white trousers, and hoots, and could be recognised by the Servant Girl.— Information to l> e given at the Station House, New- way, Tothill- strecti Westminster. F.'; one Silver Knife, one Brooch set in pearls; two black Silk Gowns, one new Hat: several pairs of Stock- ings, cotton anil silk, marked ' J. F.'— The peison who is suspected of the said robbery, was seen by a policeman, to come out of the back passage, about eleven o'clock, with a Bundle, which he gave to a Woman, who was standing near. The Man was about five feet live inches high," and dressed in a flannel jacket and fustian trousers. On Wednesday night, the 27ih instant, between the hours of six and ten o'clock, a Cart- house, belonging to Mr. Dixon, Butcher, No. 9, Pleasant- row, Camden- town, was broken open, and a Cart and Harness Stolen therefrom.— The Cart is a small Market Cart, painted green ( No. not known), with Mr. Dixon's name and address painted on it. Stolen, on Thursday, the 28th instant, from the person of Mr. Alves ( of No. 39, Sackville- street), in the City, n blue morocco leather Pocket book, with gilt clasp, maker's name ' Houghton, New Broad- street,' containing a Bill for Fifty Pounds, on Coutt's, not accepted ; and sundry Memoran- dums.— One Guinea reward will he paid, by the owner, on conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property. Stolen, on Friday, the 29th instant, from the Cellar of Mr. Cross, at the caledonian Arms,' Princess- street, Lis- son- grove, Marylcbone,— Sixty Gallons of Gin, and two Gallons of Rum; bis property. Stolen, on Friday morning, the 29th instant, about nine o'clock, from the House of Mr. J. H. Standen, No. 17, Great James- street, Bedford- row, one Brown surtout Coat, with Black Velvet inside the cull's: one Hat, maker's name • Knowlton, Temple bar'; and one Silver Tea- spoon, with Widow's Lozenge, on the handle.— The Thief was about five feet nine inches in height, and was respectably dressed in a green coat, black waistcoat, and a good hat. Stolen, in a House of Ill- fame, at Walworth, a small Silver Watch, maker's name ( on the dial) ' Cobbett, City- road, No. 3833.'— Information to bo given at the Police Station, No. 6, Park- place, Bast- street, Walworth. The following property wa's Stolen, on Friday afternoon, the 22d instant, by a Man, who called at the House of Mrs. Bunce, No. 10, Montpelier- square, Kensington, and repre- sented himself to bo Captain Fuller, at Major General Fraser's, No. 37, Bury- street, Saint James, viz.— Silver: two Sauce- ladles, one Mustard- spoon, one Salt- spoon, one Pepper- box, two Tea- spoons, four Table- spoons ( with crest a Lion\ one Table- spoon plain, six Dessert- spoons, two Dessert- forks, and a quantity of other Silver articles.— During the absence of Mrs. Bunce, to make the necessary inquiry, the Thief called, and obtaining access to the par- lour, effected the said robbery.— He is about twenty- three years of age, and had on a black coat and waistcoat, grey trousers, and a diamond pin in his shirt: his appcarance and manners were so favourable as to prevent suspicion. Hen- derson, Sellar, and Co.. well knowing the same to be false forged and counterfeited, with intent to cheat and defraud Mr. Moss Davis.— Committed to the County Gaol, for trial, at the next Assizes for the County of Surrey.
