1AM MEMOIRS and CORRESPONDENCE or JAMES ACLAND. Proprietor and Editor— written by Himself. I LIKE HONESTY IN ALL PLACES."— Judge Bayley. Printer! and Published by JAMES ACLAND ( SOI. F. PROPRIETOR AND EniTonjat No. 4, All Saints'street, Bristol, VOL. Ill- No Xt. Vl. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2- 2, 183' . [ PRICE LLRF. TO TIIE INHABITANTS OF BRISTOL. FREEMEN, I address vou by this honorablp appellation because it follows not that you ate slave* by reason of the assumption of tyranny by those who claim to be your superiors. As reason- ably might it be contended, that the loading a horse with sand- bags and the feeding him on thistles, would degrade that noble animal to the level of the ass. What, if you have suffered under an Aris- tocrat Despotism for many years, are you not s'ill Freemen ? Have your love of peace, your moderation, and your patient endurance of wrong, disfranchised you of the liberty whereunto you were Lorn ? Did the consti- tutional hatmlessness of Sampson of old, militate aga'nst his possession of miraculous strength ? Are not the French Peoqle a Nation of Freemen ? Yet, they submitted for years to the iron joke of their Aristocratic Despots ! Freemen ! better times are at hand. The Gong has been struck, and the sound has gone forth throughout the land, which boasts, that it is the Cradle of Liberty. Awake to the National call. Remember the high station to which you are summoned. Forget not the bright exemplars handed down to you on the page of British History. Claim your Rights — denounce yourWrongs- know your Power, The great curse of this Country is its Aris- tocracy, of rank and wealth. These are already aware of their danger, for they are not ignorant, that your eyes are opened and your minds enlightened They have the foresight to anticipate a concussion with Public opinion, and they have the folly, even now, to prepare the means of resistance. They will fight, that is, if they fail to appal their opponents by big words and noisy pre- parations They mount manv wide. mouthed carronades of wood on their tremendous battery, and if the Aristocratic gunnersdo not see the beleaguering multitude thereat take to their heels, thev will fire their pistols or their pop. guns from the portholes ! In this City we may look in vain for any local specimen of the Hereditary Aristocrat. The most proximate curiosity of this descrip- tion to the People of Bristol, is to be found about two miles on the other side of Durd- ham Down ; to wit, Lord de Clifford; a nobleman, whose virtue is wholly hereditary But the time is near at hand, when it will be essentially necessary, that the merits and lemerits of these gentlemen, of olden claims on our attention, shall be detailed in black and white, for the instruction an 1 edification of the enslaved People. That time ap- proaches. I therefore pass by this subject for the present, and direct my attention to the Aristocrats by pretence and assumption : a class of men, who especially abound in the City of Bristol. These assume a superioritv over their fellow- citizens, on the pretence of greater wealth. They have, most of them, sprung from nothing, and seem to have been born but as an exemplification of the philo- sophical conclusion, " ex nihilo nihil Jit ;" or in plain English, ( for I write for plain people,) out of nothing, . lothing can be made. The proceedings of this batch of would- be Lordlinos, it shall be my especial care to watch ; and by exposure to circumvent. They are the enemies of the people, the de- stroyers of their rights, the contemners of their power. They would welcome Charles Capet as a brother, and denounce Lafayette as a traitor ! Their Editorial organ or instru- ment, is the Journal Newspaper— against the weak sophistry and unfounded statements of which recreant publication, it is especially necessary I should caution you, and I proceed to do so. The paper of last Saturday is befo'e me, and presents to my view a development of the dishonest shifts, to which the Aristocrats by Pretence, who abound in your City, think it expedient to resort on this their first emergency. Messrs. Gutch & Martin tell you, that your recent proceedings in approval of the 182 THE BRISTOLIAN French Revolution, " are calculated to in- flame the bad passions of the disaffected,"— that is, of those who hate the institutions of their Country— by which is meant, the laws concocted by the hereditary Alistocats in the House of Lords, and their Aristocratic Re- presentatives and obsequious agents in the House of Commons — laws for the oppression of the People, or for the beneficial interest of the Aristocracy; These are the institutions which it is sought to preserve— such, for instance, as the restric- tions on the press— the right of a rogue to imprison an honest man for telling the truth — the privilege of a rich man to rob the poor without a chance of the attainment of ju". ice, by reason of the enormous price, at which alone it can be purchased— the penal statutes in protection of the Aristocratic right to shoot a partridge— the " Poor Laws," which confound misfortune with guilt— the Corpo- rate Charters, which enable ignorant men to dispense bad laws, and to sell justice for the coin of influence— the obligation upon the poot to give the rich more for their bread than it is worth ; THESE are the Institutions which the Aristocrats would preserve from the torch of reform— these are the imposi- tions to which the People will no longer submit— for whether or not we call them institutions, these are the things which have excited the popular disgust and hatred, and to which longer submission were a national degradation ! Messrs. Gutch & Martin tell you that othet nations profess their anxiety to imitate thece Institutions. This is not true ; but it would have been perfectly correct if the reference had been to the Aristocrats of other nations. Such statement would have been especially accurate with respect to France— for the whole history of the late French revolution may be narrated in two short sentences, to wit :— 1, The French Aristocrats, headed by the French Dei- pot.; sought the adoption of the Unconstitutional Insti- tutions of Gieat Britain.— 2, The French People hi ! d lhat these institutions wt- re badges of Slavery, and therefore rejected them, and I with them, their unprincipled advocates. I have no doubt of the desire of a considerable portion of the exclusives of this City to mask their love of Despotism, and their hatred of Popular Institutions, by a seeming loyalty; a reverence for the Sovereign— not as the Brit^ h King, but as the Aristocratic Head, and ti e fountain of Aristocratic wealth, honor, and influence. Thus qualified is the loyally of the- e little great men— and in accordance with such qualification, it is announced by the editorial quidnunc of the Cauetian Journal, lhat, " A desire has beeD manifested, and is daily gaining strength, for an opportunity to be afforded of publicly declaring the attachment of the Ci- izens of Brisiol to our Constitutional Monarch, and their determina- tion to preserve, inviolate, those invaluable iiistim tions under which it is their happiness to live." Mere is proof of the accuracy of my pre- ceding obsetvation. Here is ample evidence ot the qualified loyalty of the Bristol Aristocrta*. They are attached to the Monarch;— so am I— because I believe him ihe friend of the People, and the enemy of Corruption. They pledge themselves to presetve the game laws, the poor laws, the lie laws, and all the o: ber invaluable Aristocratic institutions, inviolate. Oil I he colittary I pledge myself to use every legal means within my power, for iheir destruction — because I believe that their " inviolate preserva- tion" by Messrs. Gutch, Martin, & Co, would lend to the perpetuation of wrong, on ihe one hand, or to the subversion of , he Mona chy of Great Britain, on the other. But the Lordlings are about to be excited to an act of folly by their sapient Journalist-, — who are either spies upon their Arisiocratic supporters, or the most blundering of Privy Cou ncillors They piopose a Public Meet- ing in support of the Invaluable Institutions of the Aristocracy !— and thev bait their trap with toasied loyalty!! and they hope to catch rats from among the nt ktlliag cats of the Peoplegranary 1 1! Let them make ihe attempt, which I will not believe they seriously contemplate, and they will afford me, and you my friends, the oppoiiunity of laughing at them fot th'ir egregious folly. They may praiseouR BELOVED SOVEREIGN as much as they please— I will at least, keep pace with their lip- loyalty ; they mav pledge themselves to his support if they think it necessary, I have not the slightest objection to a similar testimony of devotion to OUR CONSTITUTIONAL KING. But, if these qualified loyalists should have the folly and the impudence to attempt to pledge the People of Bristol to the maintainance of any one of those accursed laws, which have been fiamnl by the Aristocracy, for the oppression of the Peoplc.- they will throw a firebrand among us, the effects of which it would be as impossi- ble for Aristocrats to anticipate, as it would be impracticable for them to counteract jhe political purification, which its flames wou'd inevitably induce. Hav: ng displayed his talents for mystifica- tion, the Editorial Aristocrat directs us to read two letters from Anonymous Correspon- dents, published by him in his said paper. Under such directions I have read these let- ters and think I know their authors The first, under the signature of " Ignotus," I conceive to have been written by a certain- lav improprietor of Tithes, wh", under the impulse of fear, lest people should begin to think, that he has no right to take the tenths of the poor cotter's gardenstuff. without sup- porting the parochial poor, as the tithe rakers of old did, endeavors to put the Pando- rean box of our Political ills under the cloak of Protestantism — thus turning an admirable habiliment of Freemen into the unworthy coverslut of Aristocratic absurdities! The other communication comes fiom one who professes to be an admiier of William Pitt, a name often pressed into Foreign service, and no more connected with this struggle for Constitutional Libeity than that of Billy Tavlor, the brisk young fellow. But it was well enough for an F. xciseman— especially as he refers to the tiiumphant result of the late Election, or rather, BoroughmongerinJ in this City- I have said, that the Corres- pondents of Gutch & Co. write anonymously; they are prudent— for none but brainless Aristocrats, or the well paid hirelings of the Pre s will dare proclaim themseives '. he friends of Corruption and the enslavers of the Free, JAMES ACLAND.
