E BRISTOXiIAXf. MEMOIRS and CORRESPONDENCE of JAMES ACLAND, Proprietor and Editor- written by Himself. I LIKE HONESTY IN ALL PLACES.-— Judge Qayley. Printed and Published by JAMES ACLAND ( SOLF. PROPRIETOR AND EDITOKJ at No. 4, All Saints' street, ristol. VOL. Ill— No XXXIX. SATURDAY, AUGUST 28, 1S30. [ PRICE 1 id. Broad Quay, Aug. 25, 1830. To THE EDITOR OF THE BRISTOLIAN, SIR, . The Public of this C: tv ate \ ery much indebted to vou for the exposure you have vivc". upr> r! v. uiousxjccisions, of that rank Iftpos'or, who designates himself, the cele. brarcd Dr. Solijman Esq. Physician, Surgeon, and Apothecary, & c & c. See. And 1 cannot but sincerely and seriously lament, that men in respectable life, should be found so weak headed, as to place themselves or their Chil- dren under the care and skill of such • monstrous pretenders, who seem reckless of the mischief they perpetrate upon the limbs, healths and oftentimes, lives of their victims; so that they can find individuals whom they can gull, and whose pockets they can pick, The rase of Mr. Stephens, is one amongst hundreds that might be adduced to show, that the fellow is literally a pick- pocket of as vile a degree, as the one of another description, who, when detected, takes his voyage across the seas for seven years, as the reward of his labours. The only difference between the two being, the one robs you t> er force, th o'her per stratagem. . There is however, or at le'st I think so, a renjetiy for the evil. The Quack announces by his Placards, <! no cute no pay." What I would recom- mend to those, who have suffered in consti- tution and pocket by this vile Impostor is, to treat him with a Summons from the Court of Conscicnce, for a return of the Money, out of which he has swindled them Let the Complainants take with them one of lis placards ' containing his mad^ r'ajcuigj relate the mischief done, instead of relief afforded and shew him up in his real cha- racter ; and my life for it, the Court would order him to refund, as having received money under false pretenses By these means, my good Sir. the celebrated Dr. Solijman Esq. Physician, Surgeon, and Apothecary, & e & c. & c. may be induced to take French leave, and to withdraw himsel f from being a further pest to the City. Your obedient Servant, ANTI- QUACK, MEM.— I higMy approve of the suggestion of my Correspondent, and strongly recommend the experi- ment to be tried. Let some individual, who has been the dupe of . this worse than pick- pocket, adopt the measures advised, and . Justice, though slow, will prove sure. The Doctor's flight will be the resuirj for one question decided, decides the rest, anil after that decision he might live as peaceably in the full enjoyment of all the Plagues of Egypt, as live within the walls of this City, where he has so successfully, and for so. long a period practised his impositions. J. A. Bristol, Aug. 27, 1830. To THE EDITOR OF THE BRISfOLlAN. SIR, 1 am told that you have left for London, with the view of laying the noble foundation of your intended Parliamentary SuperstruC- ture. The moment I heard of your departure. 1 threw after you three pair of old shoes, which, so long ago as the davs of my Great Grandmother, 1 was led to believe was a practice pregnant with good luck to the object of our solicitude Something however, more substantial than old shoes is necessary to cany, your point, and it is with infinite satisfaction 1 lead, that some warm and ardent friends to the cause cf liberty, humanity, and freedom, in which you have with extraoadinary nerve and ability embarked, have already come forward in your support, to the great mortification, no doubt, of the purse proud, empty headed and insolent aristocrats of this ancient and loyal City. O ! how pleasing it is to see them in the hours of their vexation ! They see that the snail has not only reached the wall, but that lie is descending on the opposite side; on that side which leads as certainly to St. Stephen's Chapel, as the Company's Coach does to London, when - ft 154 THE BRISTOL! AN leaves Bristol. They see, in their mind's eye, the doors of that Chapel open to receive your petition against bribery and corruption— they hear it ordered to be printed, and refered to a Committee of the Honorable House— they read your eloquent display of talent in your arguments in support of your and our well ground- ed complaints, and they ultimately find, ( ' O tell, it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ascalon,") that Baillie is ousted from his seat, that the Negro Master has been deprived of the opportunity he so vainly imagined was in his grasp, of exerting his power and influence to perpetuate, for his own sordid gain, the torture of the manacle and the lash ; and that the intrepid James Acland will have been de- clared to take his seat as the honorable repre- sentative of the City and County of Bristol, in the Commons House of Parliament. Such an event will, whilst it throws the imperious Hogs' Heads into a state of de- spair and wretchedness, enliven ihe heart OF every lover ot his Country, of humanity, and of jus'ice. We all rest satisfied tb. it in you, Sir,, we shall have an able and efficient representative ; anxious alone for the peace, happiness, and prosperity of your fellow subj els— for the amel'oration of oppressive laws and the eman- cipation of the slave, no matter what the color of his skin. This good work cannot however, be ac complished, without the liberal contributions of those friend*, who feel alive to so nob'c a cause, I am proud to see the ptogress that has already been made, and have no doubt, but that a short time will enable your zealous co- opeiators to collect from the liberally disposed, such a sum as will enable you to fight " the good fight," and to crown our « auae with triumphant success, I remain Sir, your Humble S : rvant and admirer, HUMAN ITU'S* Bristol, lug. 27, 1830. TO MR. JAMES ACLAND, Sir, During the lale contested Election in this City, I was most actively engaged in support of Mr. Protheroe, not because I thought hiin the most efficient of the four Candidates to be the Representative of this City, as froui having read your Address to the Electors, published in the Bristolian, I was convinced you were that man, but because knowing as I did from my experience of Bristol Elections that without a very large sum of money, there was not the remotest chance of obta'n ing the votes of a majority of the Electors of this City for any Candidate, however admired for his talents or approved for his principles, and because I considered Mr. Proth roe's claims to the support of the Citizens, to be infinitely superior to those of Mr, Ba: llie. 1, as well as many others, was mo'j anxious to see this City rt presented in Par- liament by a man who should not only be e hrm and able advocate ol rational reform, and Negro emancipation, but who would also stand foremost in the breach made in our late glorious Protestant Constitution, by the passing if what is falsely termed the Catholic eman- cipation B ll, to oppose further encroachments, and, if possible, to repair the mischief already efltvied. You, Sir, were the only man from whose avowed principles & tried integrity, all this could be expected, but despairing of success in ' he attempt to carry you, for the reasons already issigned, it was thought most adviseable to sup- port the Candidate whose principles met our views in part, and of success in whose cause we felt confident, against the man, from whom, if elected, we had nothing to hope. With these views 1 engaged in the contest with ardour and animation, but alas! all the efforts of the friends of freedom were in vain ; borne down by the unhallowed coalition of the Corporators and Merchant Monopolists, whose rescources for bribery and corruption, weie unbounded, their labours w re rendeied useless, and their highest hopes disappointed ; and great indeed was that disappointment. But by the manly and noble course you hava pursued, and are still pursuing, our prospec's are again brigh ened, and our hopes reanimated; nay, defeat is turned into victory; advantages more extensive, and results more noble, than were anticipated even from success, are presen- ted to our view, and gUden our hearts— we now look forward with a well assured confi. deuce of seeing our utmost wishes realized, in having a member in Parliament, for this City, who will ably and fairly represent the feelings, wishes, and pri< c pies of the great majority of iis inhabitants, upon subjects of the utmost im* portance to ihe in'erest of the Nation, and the happiness of mankind. Sir, the cause you are engaged in is m st glorious and will undoubtedly be trowned with success for as it appeals certain, that pecuniary means only, and that but compara- tively triffling, are wanting to secure it, I feel the strongest assurance, that the nu merous and staunch advocates of Protes tantisni, Freedom, Justice, and Humanity, residing in the City of Bristol, will not, for the sake of a few hundreds, suffer that City to be s'igmatized and degraded by the failure of so noble a cause, 1 am Sir, . Your obedient Servant, A CITIZEN OF BRISTOL. MEM.— I understand that several sums have been paid into the City Bank, by ihe Friends to Purity of Election, in addition to those already, published, and the Collectors ate, still actively, and successfully employed. The amounts collected, will be published by Mr. Acland immed alely on his return from London. J. B. MAY. MEM — Some few errors have unavoidably occured in the Poll List, which will be care- fully revised, and the Corrections published at the close of the First Day's Poll. J. B.
