Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves antf'Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, lie- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. On Friday morning, the 1st instant, the Dwelling- house of the Rev. J. C. Lockwood, Vicar of Croydon, was broken and entered, bv some perstSn or persons unknown, and the sum of Three Pounds, Fourteen Shillings, and Sixpence, and a Steel Purse- clasp, were Stolen front a cupboard in the Kitchen.— Whoever will give such information to Mr. R. George, Constable of Croydon, as shall lead to the ap- prehension of one or more of the Thieves, shall, on their being committed for trial, receive a Reward of Five Pounds ; and a further Reward of. Fifteen Pounds on con- viction, on application to the Rev. J. C. Lockwood, Croy- don Vicarage. On Friday, the 1st inst. the bouse of Mr. John Dowsett, of Dowless street, Camberwell, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen ; viz. eleven silver tea spoon's, marked ' S. T. U.', two tabic ditto, a punch ladle, marked,' S. F.', two table spoons, marked, ' S. F.\ a cream pot, marked, ' J. D.\ eleven shirts, marked, ' Johnson,' four cravats, two damask table cloths, and one pair of silk stock- ings, all marked, ' Johnson.' On Friday evening, the 1st inst., between the hours of eight o'clock, and nine o'clock the following morning, the house of Mr. W. Green, of No. 3, Wigmore street, Ca- vendish square, auctioneer, was feloniously entered, and a small square mahogany Medicine Chest, lilted up com- plete, stolen therefrom. On Saturday evening, the 2d instant, between the hours of eight and ten o'clock, some person or persons did felo- niously enter the house of Mr. C. Watkins, situate in Saint John's Wood Terrace, Portland Town, and steal therefrom sundry articles of wearing apparel, consisting of a drab box coat, trousers, silk handkerchiefs, and some linen.— Whoever will give information, so as to lead to the convic- tion of the offender or ollenders, shall receive a Reward of Five Pounds, on application to the said Mr. C. Watkins. On Saturday, the 2d inst., the dwelling- house, No. 21, Margaret- street, Hackney- road, was feloniously broken open and entered, and the following articles stolen there- from ; viz. two silver tea- spoons, one table cloth, and one cotton shawl. On Wednesday morning, the 30th ult., the dwelling- house gf Thomas Fullwood, of No. 3, Brunswick- street, Hackney- road, was feloniously broken open and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom ; viz. one black- coat, waistcoat, and trousers, one blue coat, one pair of drill trousers, one pair of Wellington boots, marked inside, ' Messrs. Fullwood and Phillips, makers, John- street- road '; twelve shirts, marked, ' T. F.' with narrow pieces let in the back of the collars ; one bine silk gown ; one fawn Norwich crape gown ; four cotton gowns : two shawls ; two scarfs ; a quantity of silk and cotton handkerchiefs, and various articles of wearing apparel; one five pound note ; several sovereigns ; three silver table spoons, chased handles, marked, ' J. 51.'; six ditto tea spoons, marked,' T. M. F.'; one caddy spoon, ditto; one pair of sugar tongs, ditto ; two parasols; two dessert spoons, one marked, • D. S.'; two umbrellas; one silver snuff box, chased, the Freemasons' Arms on the lid ; one small box ; three gold brooches, one of them set with pearls ; one wedding ring ; two gold pins, one set with a blue stone ; one gold ring, set with garnets, and a small piece rivetted iuside; one fine- gold seal; two glass salt collars, odd ones ; one stone seal, gold mounted ; and one cut smelling bottle, marked ' F.' On Friday night, the 1st instant, the house of Thomas Newton, Esq., of Chingford, Essex, was broken open, and the following articles Stolen therefrom, viz.— One gravy- spoon, one table ditto, three dessert ditto, two salt ditto, marked ' H. N.'; one new tea- spoon, fiddle headed, four kitchen tea- spoons, and one sauce- ladle, all silver; one cut glass butter basin, dish and cover; a paper tea- tray; four glass salts; two plated knife- rests ; and a bunch of keys. Late on Tuesday night, the 29th of July, or early the fol- lowing morning, the premises and counting- house of Messrs. Wigg and Company, of North- place, Gray's- Inn- lane, were feloniously broken and entered, and the following: property stolen ; viz two ten- pound notes, two five- pound ditto, about forty pounds. in gold and silver monies, n di- vidend warrant for twenty thousand pounds Consuls, a South Sea warrant for ten thousand pounds, a Bank chcquc lor fifty- six pounds, drawn by the Accountant- General of the Court of Chancery, a promissory note for two hundred pounds, one ditto for fifty pounds, a bill of exchange, at six months, for eighty- seven pounds nineteen shillings, several bonds, a Banker's book, cheque book, and various memo- randums, a small quantity of stamps, two keys, a brown silk umbrella, with cane slick, a rent book, bound in red leather, and a long black memorandum hook, with loops for a pencil. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. On Monday night, the 28th of July, or early on Tuesday morning was stolen from Worle Hill, in the parish of Worle, in the county of Somerset, a Black Horse ( now in- clined to brown) fourteen hands two and a half inches high, strong made, with good action, short cnt tail, heels close trimmed, rising four years old. rather thick in the shoulder, two hind legs white above ihe fetlocks. There arc five black spots upon each of the hind legs just above the hand of the hoofs, the olf leg before white nearly. to the fetlock, a star in his forehead, the mane rather thick, and head lately trimmed. — The horse was offered lor sale in Bristol Market, on Thursday last; he stood previously at the New Inn, in Bedminster, and was shown at the Hot Wells in the course of the day ; is the property of John Wylde, of Worle, tallow- chandler. Any person who will give such informa- tion as will lead to the recovcrv of the horse, and conviction of the offender, shall receive Ten Guineas Reward, on ap- plication to the said John Wylde, at Worle. On Wednesday, the 30th ultimo, WILLIAM COLLIER, of Wolverhampton, ( late of Dudley), Absconded with a Mare from Wolverhampton, belonging to John Richards, of Wolverhampton.— The said Mare is a Bright Bay, about fifteen hands high, and maikcd with Ihe collar on the near shoulder; she has four black legs, and a switch tail.— The said WILLIAM COLLIER is about live feet eight inches high, lame in ihe right knee, and turns his toes out when he walks ; be had on a fustian jacket and trousers, and upon the whole had but a mean appearance.— Five Guineas Re- ward on conviction. ' Stolen or Strayed, on Thursday night, the 31st ult., or early the following morning, from Shirley Common, near Southampton, a light brown Mare, about thirteen hands high, with four black legs, slightly marked on both knees, with a switch tail, about six years old.— Five Pounds Re- ward. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 30th ultimo, or early the following morning, from a Field, at Summerhill, in the Parish of Sedgley, a Bay Gelding, aged, about fifteen hands high, a white blaze on the forehead, near fore foot white, and switch tail.— Any person giving information of the ofFender or offenders, shall, on conviction, reccive a Reward of Twenty Guineas. On Sunday, the 27th ultimo, a man calling himself Mr. Saunders, and slating that he lived at No. 37. Broad- street, Carnaby market, hired a horse and tilbury for three days, 1582 POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. at Mr. Hardiman's livery stables, Little Guildford- street> Russell- square, to go to Wrotliam, in Kent, and has not since been heard of. The horse is fifteen hands two inches high. with brown muzzle, four black legs, a star on the fore- head, is rather narrow in the loins, and a little vicious in dressing. The tilbury was yellow, picked out with black, lined with dark green, with a large green cushion, and a green driving cushion ; the wheels, mail patent; the har- ness brass, except the buckles, which are covered with leather. The man is about five feet four inches in height, rather stoat, and dark, with round face, and full dark eyes, and was dressed in black, and had a dark neckcloth on, when he left the yard. Stolen, on Saturday the 26th ultimo, or early the follow- ing morning, from the farm of Thomas Jell, of West Well, in the county of Kent, a Bay Mare, with four black legs, switch tail, a star on the forehead, and the hair grey round the shoulder. Also, a black Cart Mare, with a long tail, and a star on the forehead. The Mares were traced to Chatham, where all further trace was lost. Early on Wednesday morning, the 23d ultimo, Eleven Sheep were Stolen from Ashmore Common, in the Parish of Kempsey, in the County of Worcester, viz.— Five wethers, marked ' S. S.' on each side, one of them much eaten with maggots on the thighs ; four marked ' I. P.', viz. two rams and two wethers; one ram, marked * K.' upon the rump; and one wether, marked ' T. O.'— The said Sheep were driven through the Turnpike- gate at Bredon, early on the same morning, and some of them have been traced to Enstone, in Oxfordshire, where four of them were sold by EDWARD DRAKE, a Drover, who is supposed to have Stolen the same.— The said EDWARD DRAKE is about five feet seveo inches high, stout built, florid complexion, dark hair, Roman nose, oval face, stout legs ( rather bowed), and left handed; he has a remarkable voice, rather shrill; and is active in his walk. On Monday, the 28th. ultimo, he was dressed in a pepper and salt jean frock coat and waistcoat, laced ancle shoes, and a coarse low crowncd hat: he some- times wears a dark brown fustian frock- coat, and red waist- coat.— The said EDWARD DRAKE is well known on the road from Worcester to London, as a Driver of cattle for the London Market.— Any information respecting the above will be thankfully received by Samuel Smith, of Kempsey aforesaid ; or Mr. Orchard, Police Ofiiccr, Worcester. Stolen, late at night on the 8th ultimo, or early on the fol- lowing morning, from a Pasture Field, in the Parish of Stanton, Suffolk, a Bright Bay Riding Mare, six years old; the property of Mr. Thomas Pooley. She is about fifteen hands and a half high, with two white heels behind, up to the fetlock joint; has a remarkable hole or doke on the oil' side of her neck; and had, when Stolen, two chafed places, one on each side of her hips ; and a thin switch tail, docked very short.— Whoever will give such information as tnay lead to the conviction of the offender, shall, on application to Mr. Pooley, receive a Reward of Ten Guineas. Stolen or Strayed,( but supposed to be Stolen), on Thurs- day night, the 31st ultimo, or on the following morning, a Brown Pony ; aged, about fourteen liands high, cnt tail, puffed very much at all four fetlock joints, and a little hair off' under the saddle.— This Pony is missing out of a Field adjoining the house of Mr. Thomas Lancashire, Long Eaton Field, in the County of Derby, who hereby offers a Reward of Five Pounds for the apprehension of the person or per- sons who Stole it, on conviction.— If Strayed, all reasonable expenses will be paid for its recovery. On Sunday morning, the 3d inst., a Male Donkey was stopped by Richard Griffiths, a Bow- street Patrol, on New- ington- causeway ; it is supposed to have been Stolen, and was being driven by a suspicious character, who escaped. Stolen, on Saturday evening, the 26th of July, a Dark Bay Gelding Pony ; about twelve hands and a half high, aged, the off eye blind, a swelling under the throat inclining to the off side, a scar on the off thigh, with while hairs, and short cut tail.— Also a Cart, much worn, painted dark lead colour, iron axle- tree, with ' J. Cross, Wymondham Stage Cart,' painted on tin, and nailed on the off side of the Cart; the proporty of John Cross, of Wymondham, Norfolk, Butcher.— The above were Stolen by a Man, under thirty years of age, about five feet five inches high, dressed in a light fustian frock, light waistcoat, round hat, breeches ( supposed to be kerseymere), and leggings cut off at the ancles, white cotton stockings, and clean polished shoes. Stolen, on Sunday night, the 27th of July, or early on the following morning, from two Closes, called the Homeclose and Allcross, adjoining the Village of Cold Ashby, in the County of Northampton, two Nag Horses, five years old each. The one a bright Bay, having no white about him ; is rather wide in his quarters, and thick in his joles, with a busily tail, and some hair upon his legs ; stands about four- teen hands three inches and a half high, aud appears as much calculated for harness as riding. The other a Black, with dingy hair occasioned by the Sun, having some white on both his hinder heels, and one fore heel; a small star in the forehead, and a speck of white within side one knee; stands fifteen hands and a half high, and is as much calcu- lated for hunting as riding; the property of Mr. William Lovell, of Cold Ashby.— Whoever will give information of the person or persons who committed the above Felony, so that he or they may be prosecuted, shall, on conviction, re- ceive a Reward of Twenty Guineas of the said Mr. Lovell; and if more than one person was concerned therein, and either will impeach his accomplice or accomplices, he shall, on conviction, be entitled to the said Reward, an 1 interest will be made to procure His Majesty's Pardon. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 29th of July, or early on the following morning, from a Field, belonging to Mr. J. Wheeler, of Tndely Mill, Kent, a Light Bay Mare ; aged, about fifteen hands and a half high, white face with two red stars, very thick quarters, the off shoulder wrung with the collar, and the hair now off.— Also Stole, at the same time, from a Stable adjoining, a Bridle and Saddle — Any Person giving information, so that the offender or offenders may be brought to justice, shall, on conviction, receive a Reward of Twenty Pounds, by applying to the said Mr. J. Wheeler, Tudely Mill. Stolen or Strayed, from a Field, belonging to Bere Farm, in the Parish of Okehampton, in the County of Devon, early on Saturday morning last, the 19th July, a Brown Mare, six years old, about fifteen and a half hands high ; mark white in the off foot behind, a white snip on the nose, and some grey hairs on the off hip, a cut tail, and rather a thick mane — A handsome Reward will be paid on recovery and conviction. She is a good- looking girl, fresh colour, rather tall, and had on a black and while gown.— Thomas Handy ( who is to be found at the ' Two Bells,' in Whitechapel) could identify her. PROPERTY STOLEN. Lost or Stolen, from a Van, between Charlotte- street, Fitzroy- square, and Lincoln's- Inn Fields, a few days ago, a Deal Box, directed for ' Mr. Phillips, Brighton,' containing eight flat dishes, with gadroon edges, plated ; two square corner dishes, ditto; five oval hash dishes and covers, with handles ; and an oval soup tureen, plated, and gilt in- side. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 3! st ult., from a house situate in Centre- street, Hackney- road, belonging lo George Ball, of No. 6, Matilda- street. Hackney- road, a quantity of lead, also the lead pipes, and brass cocks. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 31st ult., a bundle con- taining two cotton shirts, three llannel ditto, two Guernsey ditto, and two pair of stockings, the properly of Peter Black, a sailor, at the ' Three Cranes,' at Mile- End. Stolen, from the person of William Smith, of No. 11, Little Prescott- street, whilst asleep in the parlour of the ' Three Compasses,' in White's- yard, Whitechapel, a gold watch, maker's name ' Richard Johnson, Dublin, No. 457.' Stolen, on Tuesday, the 29th ult., from the house of Mr. George Glover, No. 6, Grove- terrace, Ilford, Essex, two cocoa- nut shells, mounted with silver, on three feet, and silver rimmed, with the figure of a harp on the top. The shells are roughly carved in the Indian style, and are sup- posed to have been stolen by a man, who had some things to sell, during the absence of the maid. Found, on a Search Warrant, in the house of Benjamin Joseph, No. 113, Wardour- street; viz. one silver watch, capped and jewelled, maker's name ' Brown'; one ditto, makef's name ' Johnson, Liverpool, No. 418.'; one ditto, maker's name ' Thomas Smith, Liverpool, No. 164'; one ditto, No. 5832', with steel chain, two gold seals, and key ; two French gold watehes, one a repeater; three metal watches, two gold seals, six scent boxes and bottles, one negligea, one plated soup ladle, crest an armed hand with spear; and one plumber's diamond.
