POLICE OR, HUE PUISLISTJETF GAZETTE; AND CRY. ^ ut& oritg. No. 54.] TUESDAY, JULY 22, 1828. Coti^ jing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and eHwry particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Horses, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. FORGERY. Absconded from bis employment, in the City, ROBERT BAILIE, lately residing at No. 58, Hermitage- place, Saint John- street- road, who is charged with divers Forgeries and Embezzlements. He is a thin genteel- looking man, from thirty- five to forty years of age, about live feet seven inches high, fair complexion, rather pouting lips, with a trifling lisp in his speech, hair inclining to grey, one of his front teeth broken, and very insinuating in his address. He left his hbme on the 7th of May last, about three o'clock in the afternoon, accompanied by his wife, a native of Ireland, of small stature and pregnant, and a little girl between five and six years of age. Since which, it has been ascertained, tlicy went as far as Brentford End, and there got into the Bath and Bristol coach, when Mrs. Bailie was taken in pre- mature labour, and was put to bed at the Crown and Cushion public- house at Hounslow, and there delivered of a dead child, yet notwithstanding set off the next day, and went by Home's coach to Bristol. The luggage they had with them, viz. a large leather portmanteau, or trunk, very old ; a wood trunk, partly covered with paper, very dirty, and weighs between one and two hundred pounds ; a red carpet bag, with a padlock, a small two- handle basket, and a large hand- box. BAILIE had a cloak with him, lined with scarlet, and a scarlet collar. They had also a little black and white spaniel dog with them.— Whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the said ROBERT BAILIE, shall receive a Reward of One Hundred Pounds, on application to his late employer, Mr. Williams, auctioneer, Throgmorton- street. ROBBERY. On Saturday afternoon, the 19th instant, about three o'clock, Peter Flynn, an invalid from the Bengal Artillery, took a hackney coach ( No. 628), in company with two girls, at the corner of Wentworth- street, and desired to be driven to Chamber- street, Goodman's- fields, where he lives. The coachman, however, chose instead to drive to Bromley, where they got out; and in walking towards Blackwall, he ( Flynn) was thrown, by the girls, into a ditch, much beaten, arid robbed, by them, of, seven sovereigns; they then ran away.— One of them is about twenty- six years of age, and much pitted with the small- pox ; the other is a good looking girl, about eighteen years of age. HOUSE- BREAKING. On Thursday afternoon, the 17th instant, between the hours of four and five o'clock, the shop window of Mr. T. Cosher, watch- maker, Tottenham, was cut, and the follow- ing watches stolen:— One double bottomed engine- turned watch, maker's name ' Cosher, Tottenham, No. 1465;' one silver jewelled watch, maker's name ' Cosher, Tottenham, No. 1442 ;' and one plain silver watch. On Sunday morning, the 20th instant, between the hours of one and five o'clock, the house of Walter Boyd, Esq., Plaistow Lodge, Bromley, in Kent, was broken open, and two French Clocks, mounted on green marble stands, maker's name ' Bansse, h Paris,' were stolen from the chimney- pieces tffeh*! saloons, in which all the drawers and cases were bi^ en open, and sundry articles, of no great value, were taken; viz. one cut glass ( yellow) smelling- bottle, with a lifting silver top; one small vinegar- box; one pen- knife, ivory handle, and three blades; one ditto, very small, mother- of- pearl, four blades ; one gold pencil- case, engine- turned ; two gold thimbles ; five yards of lace, ( a pattern to be seen at Bow- street) ; and six silver tea- spoons, from the housekeeper's- room.— The robbers are supposed to have been disturbed, as they did not go beyond the saloons, and left there a drawer, with a pateut lock, which they had not succeeded in forcing, having broken their crow- bar.— N. B. On one of the gold thimbles is engraved ' M. E. M. Boyd, born 25th March, 1800.'— Twenty Pounds Reward, on con- viction, and recovery of the whole or part of the property. Early on Monday morning, the 21st instant, the dwelling- house of Mr. Buttenshaw, of No. 3, Shepherton- place, New Nortli- road, was feloniously entered, and the following arti- cles stolen therefrom:— Two silver tea- spoons, marked ' G., W. A. B.'; two silver salt- spoons, marked ditto; one pair of cut glass decanters; a quantity of wine glasses; one hat, maker's name ' Gravenor, Moorfields; one um- brella ; and one pair of salt- glasses.— The thieves left be- hind them a hat and centre- bit. On Sunday morning, the 20tli instant, the dwelling- house, No. 2, Shepherd's- place, White's- row, Spitalfields, was feloniously entered, by two men, who packed up a quantity of wearing apparel, but being pursued, only took away with them two womens' caps. Late on Tuesday night, the 15th instant, or early the fol- lowing morning, the Shop of Mr. Collins, of No. 16, Little Pulteney- street,_ Saint James, was broken open, and the following articles stolen therefrom, viz.— Thirty pair of Pru- nella and Denmark satin shoes, thirty- five pair of leather shoes, one pair of mens' shoes, six pair of womens' boots, with Prunella backs and leather fronts, and about fifty pair of childrens' leather boots and shoes, of various sizes and colours. On Wednesday morning, the 16th instant, between the hours of two and three o'clock, the house of Mrs. D. Powis, of Richmond- terrace, Newington, was broken and entered, and a silver tea- pot and stand, marked ' I. M. P.,' four tea- spoons marked ' M. I. A.,' one ditto with crest ( Griffin's head), and a silver cream- jug marked ' M. K.,' were stolen there- from. Two young men were observed near the premises; and two hats ( one bound with crape), a phosphorus- box and centre- bit, two odd shoes, and a gimlet, were left behind. On the night of the 15th instant, the house of Mr. Driver, of Vassall- road, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom ; viz., a silver butter knife marked ' D.,' a pair of sugar tongs marked ' D.,' ten tea- spoons marked ' I).,' one ditto marked ' A. T. D.,' one ditto marked ' E. D.,' a silk umbrella marked ' M. Parr' on the brass, a pair of gold ear- rings, a silver thimble, and alaee cap. HORSE AND CATTX. E STEALING. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 17th instant, from a Meadow, belonging to Mr. James Twycross, of Wokingham, Berku, a valuable three years old, Black Gelding, fifteen hands high, with a star in the forehead, short tail, thin mane, and white fetlocks, and has been recently trimmed.— Twenty Guineas Reward will be given to any person who will give information, so that the offender or offenders may be con- victed.— If found Strayed, all reasonable expenses will be paid, by applying as above. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 15th instant, from the stable of John Winn, Esq., of Ashdown Forest, Sussex, two Ponies, one about fourteen hands high, aged, and blind, a small bunch on the breast, and a ring on the near shoulder; the other is brown, about fourteen hands high, aged, has a small ring on the off shoulder, and a scar near the oil'hip. Stolen, on Saturday night, the 19tli instant, from a Field, at Shenley, in Hertfordshire, a small Bay Pony, with long mane and tail, about twelve hands high, very handsome, aged, with a very particular large scar between the mane and shoulders, a small star on the forehead, and one heel behind white.— Forty Pounds will be paid by Mr. Richard Toplin, of the Shenley Association, upon conviction of the offender or offenders. Stolen or Strayed, on Sunday night, the 13th instant, from the grounds at Perdiswell, near Worcester, a fine- shaped light bay carriage Horse, about sixteen hands high, with a scar on the forehead, seven years old, remarkably deep and heavy in the neck, with four black legs; strongly made all over, and when taken had a switch tail.— Two lusty men, with dark complexions, of suspicious appearance, were noticed skulking about the neighbourhood at eleven o'clock the same night; one had a thick- set jacket o^, the other a blue ragged coat, with a large bundle, apparently containing rough coats. — Whoever will bring the above Horse, or give any intelli- gence so as he may be recovered, shall receive, on convic- tion of the offender, if Stolen, a Reward of Twenty Pounds, from Mr. Orchard, Police Officer, Worcester. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 10th instant, or early the following morning, from a Field, belonging to Mr. James Freeland, at Stoke Dabernon, near Cobham, Surrey :— A Light Bay Mare ; rising five years old, in good condition, about fifteen hands high, rather a large head, Roman nose, with a red and white scar, has a double wart on her off eye- lash, and a light swelling inside of the near hock, occasioned by a kick.— Fifteen Pounds Reward. Stolen or Strayed, on Tuesday night, the 8th instant, or early on the following morning, from a Field close to the Black Horse Inn, at Teffont Magna, Wilts, a Brown Nag Mare, rising six years old, fifteen bands two inches high, with a little white over the off fore foot and the fetlock joint behind, and a small blemish on the chine.— Also a Bright Bay Cob Horse, rising four years old, with four black legs, and very short docked.— If Stolen, a Reward of Five Guineas will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the above Horses, by applying to Mr. Richard Hart, at Lavant, near Chiches- ter, Sussex ; to Robert Paseo, Police Office, Chichester ; or to Mr. Shergold, at the Black Horse Inn, Tefi'ont afore- said.— If Strayed, any person giving such information as above as will lead to the recovery of the Horses, shall be handsomely rewarded. Stolen, from Birkenhead, on the 8th instant, about half- past two o'clock, a Black Gelding; about twelve hands high, three years old, tail not yet docked, has a few white hairs in the forehead, slouch eared, and hogged mane.— It was taken over by some man in the evening by the Sea- combe Packet; he was dressed in a blue jacket, Russia duck or canvas trousers, and had the appearance of a sea- faring man.— One Guinea Reward, on application to Mr. Miller, at the Police Office, Liverpool. On Friday, the 4th instant, a Stolen Horse, of the follow- ing description, was Sold in Smithfield Market, for seven pounds ten shillings, to a man, having the appearance of a milkman.— The Horse is of a light brown colour, about fifteen hands and a half high, aged, a white slip down his nose, about four inches long, extending towards the off side of his face, the near hind foot white, and the hind feet worn at the toes for want of shoeing, tail long and thin of hair.— Any information relating to where the Horse now is, to be given to Mr. Robert Resker, constable of Writtle, Essex. PETER M'MARRAMAN, 32 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches, a native of Ireland, but speaks with a Scotch accent, deserted on march from London to Nottingham in a groom's fustian stable dress, taking with him a valuable grey horse belonging to Lieut. Colonel Wildman ( the officer commanding his regiment, the 6th Dragoon Guards). The horse is nearly thorough bred, white snip and muzzle, four white legs, and white. spots on off side of hind quarters, fired near fore ieg, from knee to coronet; stands about 15 hands inches high. Any person giving information that will lead to the recovery of the horse, will receive a reward of 10/. The man was seen at Berkhampstead, and is supposed to have made for America. The reward may be had from Lieut. Col. Edward Wildman, 6th Dragoon Guards, Not- tingham, or Mitcham, Surrey. LARCENY. RALPH SMITH, by trade a Linen- draper, and lately a Shopman to Mr. Stubbs, No, 18, Harrow- road, stands 218 POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. 191 riiarged with divers Felonies. He is about five feet eight inches high, fair ruddy complexion, light blue eyes, very light hair, rather freckled, and robust; he lately resided at No. 20, Carburton- street, Marylebone, which he left about a week ago.— Thirty Pounds Reward is offered for the ap- prehension of the said RALPH SMITH, to be paid upon his conviction. MICHAEL RYAN, late of Dublin, has Absconded, and stands charged, upon oath, with Felony of sundrv Bank of England and Ireland Notes.— The said MICHAEL RYAN is a native of the County Dublin, is five feet seven and a half inches high, slenderly made, about thirty- seven years of age, sandy beard, light hair, blue eyes, ruddy com- plexion, rather light or sandy whiskers, pitted with the small- pox ; generally. wears a white hat, a brown coat, with black velvet collar, Russia duck trousers, a ring on his little finger, and has a swinging walk.— Whoever will apprehend the said MICHAEL RYAN, and lodge him in any of His Majesty's Gaols in Great Britain or Ireland, within three calendar months from the date hereof, will receive a Re- ward of One Hundred Pounds, by applying to Hugh and John Johnston and Co., Scot's- yard, Bush- lane, Cannon street, London ; or to Michael Roach, Esq., Marlborough- street, Dublin.— The said MICHAEL RYAN came up by the Liverpool Coach, on Tuesday, the 15th instant. Stolen, on Friday, the 18th instant, from the apartments of Eleanor Burt, in Horse- shoe- alley, two cotton gowns, one Norwich crape ditto, and one red silk shawl.— Supposed to have been stolen by a man of the name of JOHN CRANE, about twenty- two years- of age, fair hair, and tall ; dressed in dark clothes, and has been lately discharged from the House of Correction. A person, calling himself CAPTAIN KING, and who says he has just come home from the East Indies, is charged with having, on Saturday, the 19th instant, Stolen thirty- nine yards of silk, thirty- two yards of printed cotton, eight pair of cotton stockings, four pair of silk stockings, and eight. silk handkerchiefs, from Mr. Brown, a linen- draper, in Ratcliff- highway.— The said person is about thirty years of age, five feet ten inches high, full faced, has sandy coloured hair and sandy whiskers ; was dressed in a blue military frock coat, buttoned close up to the neck. FRAUDS AND AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANORS. A man calling himself JOHN SMITH, about 44 or 45 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, wearing a blue double- breasted coat, sometimes black and sometimes blue striped trowsers, a quilted waistcoat, white neckerchief, with his shirt collar high above it, generally wearing shoes, and carries a brown silk umbrella, walks very upright, very white hair, which may easily be mistaken for powder, plea- sant countenance, and genteel address, went, on Friday, the 18th inst., into the shop of Mr. John Vallance, boot and shoe maker, Lowgate, Hull, and said he wanted a pair of shoes, and desired that four pair might be sent lo his lodgings, in Quintin Place, Drypool, which were accordingly sent for him to select one pair, but he has since decamped with the whole of them. He has been committing similar frauds at Lincoln and Scarbourough. A reward of Three Guineas will be paid on conviction of the said JOHN SMITH, by applying to Mr. Vallance, or to Pearson Fox, Chief Constable of Sculcoates. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS Lost, or decoyed away, on Saturday, the 19th instant, between twelve and one o'clock in the afternoon, a Child, about three years of age, named Thomas Nelson ; he was then staying with a sister, living at No. 14, Water- lane, Fleet- street, from whence he was missed. He was dressed in a half mourning striped frock, and nankeen tippet; was without a hat, and had on shoes and worsted socks, and has light hair; he answers to the name of ' Tommy.' ESCAPED. Escaped, from his Majesty's Gaol at Reading, in the night of Sunday, the 20t'h of July instant, or early in the morning of Monday the 21st, JOHN TILEY, who, at the last Lent Assizes, was convicted of house- breaking, and sentenced to be transported for 14 years. The said JOHN TILEY is about 35 years of age, 5 feet4f high, stoiAnade, dark complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, round f<^ 7 and down look; by trade a shoemaker, walks very stooping, from an injury he received by a kick; had on when he escaped the prison dress, i. e., a party- coloured jacket and breeches ( yellow and brown), wooden shoes, no waistcoat nor stockings, and wore a red and white handkerchief about his neck ; has been in the habit of tramping the country with a woman of short stature ( supposed to be his wife), who are both well known in the environs of Reading and Workingham. Whoever will apprehended the said JOHN TILEY, and lodge him in any of his Majesty's Gaols, shall receive a reward of Five Pounds, by applying to Mr. T. W. Eaststaff, County Gaol, Reading. DESERTED. WILLIAM HITCHCOCK, corporal and clerk, aged twenty- eight, five feet eleven inches high, deserted from the 2d Life Guards, in London, on the 14th instant. He enlisted at London, on the 8th November, 1819; belonged to Tut- bury, in the county of Stafford, and is by trade a. wool- stapler.— Description: Fair complexion, brown hair, grey WAR OFFICE, NAME. The above William Hitchcock is a young man of genteel address, and particularly mild spoken; is a remarkably good penman; and is at this time in a sickly state, conse- quently pale; has a brother living at Flyer's Mills, Leices- ter ; a father at Litchfield, and a sister in Devonshire- street, London: but it is supposed he will endeavour to get on board of ship bound for America, either in the River Thames, or some other port. Stolen, on Thursday night, the 17th instant, from the per- son of Mr. Thomas Harding, ( of No. 5, Raymond- buildings, Gray's Inn), at Fulham, a small common book, which shuts up, and fastens with a pencil, claret coloured cover, contain- ing two bills of exchange, one for three hundred pounds, drawn by Orchard upon A. Harding, the oilier for thirty pounds, drawn by Mills upon Wilson; a check for fourteen pounds sixteen shillings and eightpence; two five- pound Weymouth notes; and about a dozen address cards. Stolen, on Friday, the 18th instant, from the new buildings, in Belgrave- square, Pimlico, the property of Thomas Cubitt, of Pimlico, builder, the following carpenters' tools, viz.— One plough, ten irons, one stock and twenty- two centre- bits, one half- ripper, one pannel- saw, one tennant- saw, one dovetail- saw, one sash- fillister, one sash- plane, one smooth- ing- plane, one foot trying- square, one four- inch trying- square, three rebate- planes, one new tool- basket, one hand- saw, one rule, and one bead- plane ; all marked ' B.' Stolen, on Wednesday afternoon, the 16th instant, about half- past five o'clock, from the Bed- room, No. 18, at the Bath Hotel, Piccadilly, a Carpet Travelling Bag, contain- ing a portfolio, a variety of Linen, & c. ; also a Brown Great Coat, and a Black Frock Coat.— Whoever will apprehend the offender, or give such information as may lead to the recovery of the Property, to Mrs. Bland, Bath Hotel, Piccadilly, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Pounds.
