OR, HUE AND CRY. No. 53 FRIDAY, JULY 18, 1828. Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can be described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every othtr particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned, and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and, particularly of Stolen Ilorsvs. with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. FORGERY. Absconded from liis employment, in the City, ROBERT BAILIE, lately residing at No. 58, Hermitage- place, Saint John- street- road, who is charged with divers Forgeries and Embezzlements. He is a thin genteel- looking; man, from thirty- five to forty years of age, about five feet seven inches high, fair complexion, rather pouting lips, with a trifling lisp in his speech, liair inclining to grey, one of bis front teeth broken, and very insinuating in his address. He left his home on the 7th of May last, about three o'clock in the afternoon, accompanied by his wife, a native of Ireland, of small stature and'pregnant, and a little girl between live and six years of age. Since which, it has been ascertained, they went as far as Brentford End, and there got into the Bath and Bristol coach, when Mrs. Bailie was taken in pre- mature labour, and was put to bed at the Crown and Cushion public- house at Hounslow, and there delivered of a dead child, yet notwithstanding set off the next day, and went by Home's coach to Bristol. The luggage they had with them, viz. a large leather portmanteau, or trunk, very old ; a wood trunk, partly covered with paper, very dirty, and weighs between one and two hundred pounds ; a red carpet bag-, with a padlock, a small two- handle basket, and a large hand- box. BAILIE had a cloak with him, lined with scarlet, and a scarlet collar. They had also a little black and white spaniel dog with them.— Whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the said ROBERT BAILIE, shall receive a Reward of One Hundred Pounds, on application to his lata employer, Mr. Williams, auctioneer, Throgmorton- str- cet. HOUSE- BREAKING. Late on Tuesday niglit, the 15th instant, or early the fol- lowing morning, the ishop of Mr. Collins, of No. 16, Little Pulteney- street, Saint James, was broken open, and the following articles stolen therefrom, viz.— Thirty pair of Pru- nella and Denmark satin shoes, thirty- live pair of leather shoes, one pair of mens' shoes, six pair of womens' boots, with Prunella backs and leather fronts, and about fifty pair of childrens' leather boots and shoes, of various sizes and colours. On Wednesday morning, the 16th instant, between the hours of two and three o'clock, the house of Mrs. D. Powis, of Richmond- terrace, Newington, was broken and entered, and a silver tea- pot and stand, marked 41. M. P.,' four tea- spoons marked ' M. I. A.,' one ditto with crest ( Griffin's head), and a silver cream- jug marked ' M. K.,' were stolen there- from. Two young men were observed near the premises; and two bats ( one bound with crape), a phosphorus- box and centre- bit, two odd shoes, and a gimlet, were left behind. On the night of the 15th instant, the house of Mr. Driver, of Vassall- road, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom; viz., a silver butter knife marked ' D.,' a pair of sugar tongs marked ' D.,' ten tea- spoons marked ' D.,' one ditto marked ' A. T. D.,' one ditto marked ' E. D.,' a silk umbrella marked ' M. Parr' ou the brass, a pair of gold ear- rings, a silver thimble, and a lace cap. OnThur\ - y morning, the 10th instant, about six o'clock, the warehouie of Mr. William Linsdell, of No. 6, Tower Royal, Watling- street, was broken and entered, and a quan- tity of Umbrella Silks, Ginghams, Parasols, and Umbrellas, stolen therefrom.— Some persons, supposed to be concerned in the Felony, were seen leaving an empty house adjoining, in a hackney coach, a few minutes before six o'clock.— Twenty Pounds Reward on conviction and recovery of the property, on application to Mr. W. Linsdell, of No. 6, Tower Royal. On Thursday night, the 10th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, the dwelling- house of Mr. Bagster, of No. 6, Southampton- street, Covent- garden, was broken and entered, and the following articles wdre stolen therein:— Aboutthirty- tive yards of superfine black cloth; about thirty- five yards of superfine olive ditto ; a superfine blue lappelled coat, with gilt buttons, and blue velvet collar ; a superfine black lappelled coat, with silk buttons; a superfine dark mixed double breasted great coat; and a second cloth dark mixed livery coat. On Thursday night, the 10th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, the dwelling- house of Sir Herbert Jenner, at Chislehurst, Kent, was burglariously broken and entered, with intent to steal. On Thursday night, the 10th { instant, between the hours of nine and ten o'clock, the dwelling- house of George Glover, No. 23, Hunt- street, Mile End, New Town, was broken open, and a quantity of velvet, cut from a loom, stolen. The dwelling- houSe of Miss Guillemead, No. 5, Southern Hill, near Reading, was broken into in the night of Wed- nesday, the 9ih instant, tind the following articles stolen therein, viz:— One pair of silver candlesticks, new pattern ; three silver dessert forks, marked ' J. A. G.'; four silver salt- spoons,, marked ' P. T. G.'; two cruet- tops ; a large green baize cover; about seven pair of sheets, some marked ' P. T. G.', and some ' J. G.'; a servant's black livery coat, one other coat, a hat with black crape round it, a pair of- black kerseymere breeches, a black velvet waist- coat, a satin ditto, a kerseymere ditto, five pair of brown cotton stockings, and eight silk handkerchiefs. On Friday night, the 11th instant, or early the following morning, the dwelling- house- of Mr. F. Barlow, Battle- place, Reading, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen therefrom:— A silver tea- pot; ditto milk- jug, marked ' W. S. W. Si'; ditto pint tankard, marked ' F. M. B.'; twelve silver tea- spoons, marked * B.'; a pair of sugar- tongs, marked ' F. M. B.'; six table Spoons, mark- fed * B.'; four salt- spoons, new; one olive brown coat, lined with silk; que brown cotton summer coat; two pair of shoes, and a wood basket.— Whoever will give information of the offender or offenders, may receivc the. Reward of Ten Pounds, by applying to the said Mr. F. Barlow, Battle- plaee aforesaid. Horse AND CATTLE stealing. Stolen or Strayed, on Sunday night, the 13th instant, from the grounds at Perdiswell, near Worcester, a fine- shaped light bay carriage Horse, about sixteen hands high, with a scar ou the forehead, seven years old, remarkably deep and heavy in the neck, with four black legs; strongly made all over, and when taken had a switch tail.— Two lusty men, with dark complexions, of suspicious appearance, were noticed skulking about the neighbourhood at eleven o'clock the same night; one had a thick- set jacket on, the other a blue ragged coat, with a large bundle, apparently containing rough coats. — Whoever will bring the above Horse, or give any intelli- gence so as he may be recovered, shall receive, on convic- tion of the offender, if Stolen, a Reward of Twenty Pounds, from Mr. Orchard, Police Officer, Worcester. Stolen, or. Thursday night, the 10th instant, or early the following morning', from a Field, belonging to Mr. James Freeland, at Stoke Dabernon, near Cobham, Surrey :— A Light Bay Mare ; rising five years old, in good condition, about fifteen hands high, rather a large head, Roman nose, with a red and white scar, has a double wart on her off eye- lash, and a light swelling inside of the near hock, occasioned by a kick.— Fifteen Pounds Reward. Stolen or Strayed, on Tuesday night, the 8th instant, or early on the following morning, from a Field close to the Black Horse Inn, at Teffont Magna, Wilts, a Brown Nag Mare, rising six years old, fifteen hands two inches high, with a little white over the off fore foot and the fetlock joint behind, and a small blemish on the chine.— Also a Bright Bay Cob Horse, rising four years old, with four black legs, and very short dockcd.— If Stolen, a Reward of Five Guineas will be paid to any person who will give such information as will lead to the recovery of the above Horses, by applying to Mr. Richard Hart, at Lavant, near Chiches- ter, Sussex ; to Robert Pasco, Police Office, Chichester ; or to Mr. Shergold, at the Black Horse Inn, Tefi'ont afore- said.— If Strayed, any person giving such information as above as will lead to the recovery of the Horses, shall be handsomely rewarded. Stolen, from Birkenhead, on the 8th instant, about half- past two o'clock, a Black Gelding; about twelve hands high, three years old, tail not yet docked, has a few white hairs in the forehead, slouch eared, and hogged mane.— It was taken over by some man in the evening by the Sea- combe Packet; he was dressed in a blue jacket, Russia duck or canvas trousers, and had the appearance of a sea- faring man.— One Guinea Reward, on application to Mr. Miller, at the Police Office, Liverpool. On Friday, the 4th instant, a Stolen Horse, of the follow- ing description, was Sold in Smithfield Market, for seven pounds ten shillings, to a man, having the appearance of a milkman.— The Horse is of a light brown colour, about fifteen hands and a half high, aged, a white slip down his nose, about four inches long, extending towards the off side of his face, the near hind foot white, and the hind feet worn at the toes for want of shoeing, tail long and thin of hair.—.- Any information relating to where the Horse now is, to be given to Mr. Robert Resker, constable of Writtle, Essex. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 8th instant, or early on the following morning, from Wormwood Scrubbs, a Dark Brown Mare, with four black legs, has a star on the fore- head, stands about fifteen hands higli, is aged, and the off hind leg is a little swelled.— Ten Pounds Reward on con- viction. Stolen, on Monday evening, the 7th instant, from a field at Ball's- pond, a Mare, the property of Edward Richards, of Green Man- lane, Islington. It was brought, the same night, about eleven o'clock, ( before it had been missed by the owner,) to • the Golden Lion Stables, in Saint John- street, and there left at livery, by a man, who said lie had that day brought it from Uxbridge : he was dressed like a groom, in a dark stuff waistcoat, with sleeves, drab breeches, white stockings, and atfclc shoes; he was about twenty years of age, about five feet four inches high, anil was slenderi * » oerson, and has not been seen since. The man brought a white leather halter about the Mare, but took it away with him again. Stolen, from the parish of Chelveston- cum- Coldecot, hear Higham Ferrers, in the county of Northampton, on the night of Friday, the 27th of June, a Brown Nag Mare, four years old, about fifteen hands high, a blaze in the face, a scar at the bottom of the off shoulder, caused by a kick, her neck very much chafed by the collar, her tail lately cut, and carries her head high when she is ridden.— Five Pounds Reward will be given to any person who may give such in- ' formation as may be the means of restoring the said Mare to William Boddington, of Higham Ferrers ; or Ten Pounds on conviction of the offender.— A Mare, answering the above description, was led by a man, through the village of Leedingworth and Old Hurst turnpike gate, near Saint Ives, Hunts., on the day after the above was stolen. LArCENY. On Tuesday afternoon, the 15th instant, William Brown- ing, of Kelvedon, Essex, had four sovereigns stolen from his waistcoat pocket, by a girl, in Wentworth- street, White- chapel.— She is a good looking girl, about five feet five inches high, of slender make, and about twenty years of age; she could be identified. 214 POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. 191 Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 15tli instant, three shillings and three halfpence, from the person of Thomas Young, in High- street, Shadwell, by a woman of the town, known by the name of LOUISA, and a Man, whose name is unknown; the man wore a white hat. Stolen, on Wednesday afternoon, the Kith instant, from the shop of Mr. Alexander, No. 33, Cannon- street- road, by a young man, who entered under pretence of selling some shells, a Time- piece, capped and jewelled, in a mahogany inlaid case, with a star in front.— The man was followed to Wentworth- street, Whitechapel, and there all trace of him was lost. He is thin made, of sallow complexion, and was dressed in black. Stolen, on Wednesday, the 16th instant, from the person of John Anderson, in Sun- court, in the parish of Saint George, one blue coat, one silk waistcoat, one sovereign, and ten shillings.— MARY BEDFORD, a girl of the town, is suspected to have committed the felony. Stolen, on Saturday morning, the 12th instant, between nine and ten o'clock, from the Bath Hotel, in Piccadilly, a silver tea- pot, oval, plain, with black handle ; a silver coffee- pot, iluted in front of the spout; a pint silver tankard, marked ' T. B. S.'; a small silver extinguisher, plain ; a sil- ver table- spoon, plain ; and a silver desSert- spoon, marked ' S. B.'— A Man, about live feet seven inches high, about thirty years of age, with dark eyes, and good looking, was seen ou the staircase of the Hotel, a short time before, and is suspected of the felony.— Five Pounds Reward will be paid on the conviction of the offender, and recovery of the property. ESCAPED. Escaped from the Town Gaol, Cambridge, on the 8th inst., CHRISTOPHER CARTER, five feet eleven and a half inches high; born at Childerley, Cambridgeshire, a chaff cutter and porter to wagons, very slender make, very light hair, and thin face, grey eyes, a slight cast in the left eye ; had on, when he escaped, a coloured waistcoat, with sleeves, a pair of worsted cord breeches, blue worsted stockings, red and yellow cotton neckerchief, a pair of ancle jack shoes, and no hat.— Whoever will give such information as will lead to the apprehension of the above- named CHRIS- TOPHER CARTER, or lodge him in any of His Majesty's Gaols, shall be handsomely rew arded for their trouble, and all reasonable expenses paid, by application to Mr. John Payne, governor of the Town Gaol, Cambridge. . WILLIAM HITCHCOCK, corporal ajid clerk, aged twenty- eight, five feet eleven inches high, deserted from the 2d Life Guards, in London, on the 14th instant. He enlisted at London, on the 8th November, 1819; belonged to Tut- bury, in the county of Stafford, and is by trade a wool- stapler.— Description: Fair complexion, brown hair, grey eyes; person, slender; head, nose, and mouth, propor- tionate ; face and neck rather long, eyebrows arched, shoulders square, hands small; arms, thighs, legs, and feet, proportionate ; and tf as dressed in plain clothes. The above William Hitchcock is a young man of genteel address, and particularly mild spoken; is a remarkably good penman ; and is at this time in a sickly state, conse- quently pale; has a brother living at Flyer's Mills, Leices- ter; a father at Litchfield, aud a sister in Devonshire- street, London: but it is supposed he will endeavour to get on board of ship bound for America, either in the River Thames, or some other port. TWENTY GUINEAS will he paid immediately on the man's being apprehended, on applica- tion to Charles Clark, Lieut, and Adjt., 2d Life Guards. Stolen, between the 5th and 9th instant, a ten- pound Bank of England Note, No. 11,423, dated 15th March, 1828. — One Guinea Reward on conviction of the offender. Stolen, on Sunday night, the Cth inst., from the Priory, near Kilburn, seven hens, and one game cock ; the cock was white, with red wings, and yellow legs ; the hens were of a light brown colour. On Monday night, the 14th inst., John Falconer, of No 54, Commercial' Chambers, Minories, was robbed, in Rose- mary- lane, of twenty- five sovereigns, in a brown Ak purse ; a watch ribbon and, gold seal, with a cornelian stone, and a gold key. Stolen, on Wednesday afternoon, the 16th instant, about half- past five o'clock, from the Bed- room, No. 18, at the Bath Hotel, Piccadilly, a Carpet Travelling Bag, contain- ing a portfolio, a variety of Linen, & c. ; also a Brown Great Coat, and a Black Frock Coat— Whoever will apprehend the offender, or give such information as may lead to the recovery of the Property, to Mrs. Bland, Bath Hotel, Piccadilly, shall receive a Reward of Twenty Pounds. On Monday night, the 14th instant, the Stables of Mr. Stone, in Warwick- street, were broken open, and the fol- lowing articles stolen therefrom, viz.— One Chaise Harness, consisting of one bridle,- with red ribbon front, two brass imitation rosettes, a demi- lion on the blinkers, and mar- tingai with Diggel's patent bit, hames with brass slips to hold the hearing rein, brass chain, and plain collar; a sad- dle- pad, with patent breeching, also a small trace to back- band on each side, two brass turrets and brass . bearing- hook, and three square top- studs on each side of the pad; a riding- pad, with jointed stirrups ; and a curb- bridle. Found, on Wednesday the 16th instant, on a boy named MATTHEW WHITE, one wet shift, a shell having six NAME. W.'; an opera- glass; an old edition of Rowe; two red morocco cases, with five hydrometers ; one pair of new steel snuffers, very handsome; two silk umbrellas ; one parasol; one new Russia leather pocket book ; and the top of a tortoise- shell snuff- box, with the figure of a man driv- ing a tandem, inlaid with gold.— Application to be made to the Public Office, Bow- street.
