P O L I C E OR, HUE GAZETTE; AND CRY ftutfjoritjn FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 1828. No. 47 Containing the Substance of all Informations received in Cases of Felonies, and Misdemeanors of an aggravated nature, and against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and every particular circumstance marking the Offence. The Names of Persons charged, who are known but not in Custody, and of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and every other mark of identity that can he described. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every other particular which may lead to their Apprehension. The Names of all Persons brought before the Magistrates, charged with any of the Offences mentioned and whether committed for Trial, Re- examination, or how otherwise disposed of. Also a Description of Property that has been Stolen, and particularly of Stolen Hones, with as much particularity as can be given, with every circumstance that may be useful for the purpose of Tracing and Recovering it. ABSON AND WILFUL BURNING. WHITEHALL, JUNE 4th, 1828. On Wednesday night, Ihe 18th instant, the dwelling- liouse of Mr. John Goodman Adkins, at Husborne- Crawley, Bedfordshire, was Burnt Down, and it is supposed that the same was maliciously set on fire.— If any person will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders, a Reward of Fifty Pounds will, on such conviction, be paid on application to Mr. Adkins; and if more than one person was concerned, and either will dis- cover his accomplice or accomplices, he shall, on the con- viction of such accomplice or accomplices, receive the same Reward, and application will be made to procure His Majesty's Pardon. CHARLOTTE LOVELL, servant to Mr. Adkins, has been committed to Bedford Gaol, on suspicion of the offence above- mentioned.— On the day after Mr. Adkins' house had been set on fire, four hqjises, into which his furniture had lieen removed, were also set on fire, it is supposed that other persons were concerned with her, as a bludgeon, loaded with lead, was found near the house of Mr. Adkins; and three suspicious looking men, who are said to be from Bow Brickhill, where the girl comes from, were seen at the fire soon after it broke out. ROBBERY FROM THE PERSON. DANIEL CARTER otherwise TAYLOR, stands charged, by Isaac Pye, constable at Cheshunt, with Highway Rob- 1 bery, at Cheshunt.— He is between thirty and forty yea'rs of age, of dark complexion, and large dark whiskers, a long nose, and has a speck on the left eye ; he dresses generally in a fustian coat, plush breeches, worsted stockings, and high shoes ; he is known about Hackney- road, Kingsland- road, and the City- road, HOUSE- BREAKING. Stolen, on Monday night, the 23d instant, from the house of Stephen Dash, of No. 23, King- street, Westminster, fruiterer, which was broken and entered, three silver table- spoons, one silver tea- spoon, and one silver salt- spoon, all marked ' S. D.'; and about one pound and a half of tea.— Ten Guineas Reward, on apprehension and conviction of the offender or offenders. On Sunday, the 22d instant, between the hours of one and five o'clock in the morning, the house of Miss Dicks, at Woodford, was broken and entered, and the following arti- cles stolen therein :— Two new silver tablespoons, plain; two ditto, marked ' B. J. S.'; six new plain tea- spoons ; six old ditto, much worn ; two silver salt- spoons ; one old des- sert- spoon, marked ' G. H.'; an old tea- spoon, marked'T. G.' one pair of sugar- tongs, aud one half- pint mug.— The thieves effected their entrance by wrenching the iron- grating from the outside, and boring a hole large enough to admit a man's arm. On Thursday night, the 19th instant, or early the follow- ing morning, the house of Mrs. Martha Merrewether, of Speenhamland, near Newbury, was broken open, and the followi Virticles stolen therefrom :— A black silk cloak, a black si ™ gown; five shifts, marked ' M. M/ with a needle; a pair of black leather shoes, new, of a large size ; two gold rings, one with a white, the other a red stone ; a bom- bazeen gown; a black silk scarf; several pocket handker- chiefs, white ; a large coloured bundle handkerchief, red and white spots ; two pair of black cotton stockings, mark- ed ' M.', one pair numbered ' 5/ the other ' 6'; several arti- cles of ladies' wr aring apparel; a black Norwich crape apron, a pair of lady's kid gloves, straw colour ; a pen- knife, with two blades and spotted handle ; and several pieces of white ribbon and lace.— A Reward of Ten Guineas will be paid on the conviction of the offender, and recovery of the property. On Monday night, the 23d instant, the house of John Richards, of No. 2, Stanhope- place, New Southwark- road, was broken and entered, and the following articles stolen: viz. six silver tea- spoons, one new. hat, ' one brown silk um- brella, and one liquor- stand with three bottles. On Sunday night, the 22d instant, of early the following morning, the house of General. Williams, of Leamington Spa, was broken open, and the following articles stolen :— One small round waiter, twenty- four large forks, twelve dessert ditlo, eleven large spoons, one gravy ditto, seven old tea- spoons, twelve new ditto, four salt ' ditto, four sauce ditto, one soup- ladle, one butter- knife, and one pickle- stand ; the above are all silver, having the crest of a Saracen's liejid, engraved thereon. Also one long oval silver tea- pot, engraved ' A. R.'; one silver mustard- pot, two pair of sugar bows, six plated spoons, the works of a French clock, four five- pound notes of the Warwick Old Bank, a clock, with white dial, together with various other articles.— Twenty Guineas Reward on conviction of the offenders, and re- covery of the property. On the afternoon of Friday, the 20th instant, the dwell- ing- house of Mr. John Dyer, of No. 4, Frederick- place, Borough- road, in the county of Surrey, was entered by one JOSEPH BELCHER, and eighteen sovereigns, one five- pound note, one shilling, and an insurance paper, were stolen from a room in the said house.— The said JOSEPH BELCHER is about five feet nine inches high, black hair, dark complexion, dark eyes, and Roman nose ; was dressed in a blue coat and waistcoat, fustian trousers, low shoes, and white stockings. HORSE AND CATTLE STEALING. Stolen, from a Field, belonging to Mr. F. Randall, in the parish of Hunston, on the night of the 21st instant:— Three fat Lambs; each Lamb was marked with red tiver across the shoulders, along the back to the tail, a tiver stroke on the off hip, with a pitch mark of ' R.' between the two tiver marks on the hip.— They are supposed to have been taken away alive, in a cart, towards Brighton; and any informa- tion is requested to be given to Mr. Pasco, of the Police, Chichester, and a Reward of Ten Pounds will be paid, on the conviction of the offender or offenders. A Black Mare, twelve hands high, with white legs, star on the forehead, white saddle marks, a streak mark on the nose, and long switch tail, was found in the New Road, on Wednesday, the 25th instant, supposed to have been stolen. • Stolen, on Wednesday morning, the 25th instant, from a Field, belonging to Mrs. Gray, of Hodnet, in the county of Salop, a Dun Bay Hack Mare, aged, about fifteen hands high, a blemish on the fleshy part of the thigh, on the off side, black mane, and tail square; pokes out her head, as if she had the pole evil.— A Reward of Ten Guineas will be paid by the Hodnet Association for the Prosecution of Felons ; and also a further Reward of Five Guineas will be paid by Mrs. Gray, on the apprehension and conviction of the offender. Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 18th instant, or the following morning, front a Field, near Kingston- upon- Thames, a Black Mare, three years old, thirteen hands and three inches high, a switch tail, both knees broken, a large white saddle mark on the near side, and a small white blaze down the forehead.— A Reward of Ten Pounds will be paid by Mr. Disney, of Elmers, near Kingston, on the conviction of the offender or offenders. Mr. Benjamin Carter, of the George Inn, Selsoe, Bed- fordshire, gave information, that during the night of Thurs- day last, a Bay Pony was stolen from his premises ; the Pony was sold on the following day, to Mr. George Wilkin- son, No. 4, Edward's- terrace, Kensington, and has been recovered; but the thief has not been apprehended. On Saturday night, the 14th inst., a brown four- year- old nag filly, fifteen hands high, with black legs, mane, and tail, and a few white hairs in the forehead, the property of Mr. Richard Foll, of Harlington, in the county of Bedford, was stolen from a close, called Great Close, in the said parish. Whoever will give information of the offender or of- • fenders, shall, on his or their conviction, receive a Reward of Five Guineas from the Treasurer of the Bedforshire Association for Prosecuting Felons, and a further Reward of Ten Cuineas from Mr. Foll. Sto^., . -, u « y night, the 9th June, from a field in Bexton, near Knutsford, an aged brown- bay hackney mare, about fourteen hands and an inch high, strong made, marked with a small star on the forehead, and the near hind leg white, several inches above the heel, the property of Mr. Thomas Ditchfield, Butcher, Knutsford.— Whoever can give such information as will lead to the recovery of the mare, and the conviction of the offender or offefiders, will be paid a reward of Ten Guineas, on application to Mr. Siddeley, Treasurer to the Association for the ProseeHtion of Felons!, Knutsford. Stolen or strayed, out of a field adjoining Mr. Salmon's farm, in the township of Huntington, in the county of Chester, late on Tuesday night the 10th, or early on Wed- nesday morning the 11th of June inst., a light bay mare, three years old, is nearly full blood, stands about fifteen hands and a half high, has four white legs, a white star in her face, and when mounted does not carry her tail well; notice is hereby given, that whoever brings the said mare back, or gives such information as may lead to her recovery, will be paid a reward of Three Pounds, if strayed; and if stolen, the person apprehending and giving such evidence as will convict the offender or offenders, shall be paid a reward of Ten Pounds, upon application ta Mr. Salmon, liquor- merchant, Foregate- street, Chester, the owner. Mr. John Lamb, ofthe Unicorn Stables, Southwark, des- patched his servant, on horseback, to deliver a message, a few days since, at Clerkenwell, instead of doing which, he sold the Horse, and never returned ; the horse has been since stopped. The servant's name is not known, lie is about twenty- four years of age, about five feet six inches high, of stout person, and was dressed, when he went away, in breeches, and ancle shoes, a green frock coat, and brown waistcoat.— He was commonly called ' YORK.' Stolen, on Wednesday night, the 4th instant, or early the following morning, from the Stable of John Gentry, at Layer- de- la- haye, in the county of Essex, a Brown Gelding Pony, about thirteen and a half hands high, with a white star on the forehead, a mark on the nose below the nostrils, from a bite, black legs, and long tail. Stolen, on Sunday night, the 1st instant, from a Field, at Catcliff, in the county of York, a Bay Mare, seven years old, one hind foot white, a small head, with large and rather wide ears, a black streak down the back, and a scar on her near quarter.— Ten Guineas Reward, on conviction and re- covery of the Mare, will be paid, on application to Francis Huntsman, the owner, of Atterclyffe, Sheffield. On Friday night, the 6th instant, or early the following morning, was Lost or Stolen, from a Field, at Sandford, in the parish of Winscomb, in the county of Somerset, a Bay Hackney Mare ; three years old, about fourteen hands high, of a strong make, and remarkably good in all her paces, with a little white on the off foot behind, and short cut tail. — If Stolen, whoever will give such information of the offender or offenders, as will lead to his or their conviction, shall receive a Rewatd of Ten Guineas, by applying to Mr. John Adams, of Sandford aforesaid.— If Strayed, a Reward of One Guinea, and all reasonable expenses will be paid to any person or persons, who will deliver the said Mare to the said Mr. John Adams. LARCENY. Stolen, on Wednesday afternoon, the 25th instant, from the dwelling- house of George Tanman, No. 69, Old Tothill- street Westminster, four silver table- spoons, five tea ditto, 190 POLICE GAZETTE; OR, HUE AND CRY. = s= and two pair of sugar- tongs.— A man, named HAWKINS, twenty- two years of age, about five feet nine inches high, stout made, and of dark complexion, is suspected of steal- ing the same. A Young Man stands charged with Felony, at Mr. Thomas Helden's, at the ' George,' Castle- street, Leicester- square, answering the following description, viz. about five feet six inches high, pale complexion, thin visage, about twenty- five years of age ; wore a blue coat, gilt buttons, drab trousers, a pair of Wellington boots, rather too long for him ; very genteel in his behaviour, and wears his hat over his eyes. NICHOLAS NOWLAND, a journeyman tailor, Stands charged with stealing, on Tuesday, the 24th instant, a blue' superfine coat, the property of David Treasurer, of No. 17, Prince's- row, Newport- market, and has absconded, and it is supposed gone to Liverpool. On Wednesday evening, the 25th instant, between the hours of five and six o'clock, WILLIAM WATSON, a ser- vant of Mr. W. G. Miles, No. 67, Parson's- street, Ratcliff- highway, Absconded from his service, after having broken open a trunk, and taking a cash- box therefrom, which con- tained three sovereigns and some silver, two seamens' notes, one for four pounds, and the other for two pounds ten shil- lings; two silver tea- spoons, and one salt ditto, marked ' T.'; some razors, and several other articles.— The said WILLIAM WATSON is about four feet six inches high, of very fair complexion, and light hair, Roman nose, and thin face, and is of consumptive appearance. A young man, calling himself CHARLES WEST HEA- LEY, and who said ho came from the . neighbourhood of Sheffield, did lately, by false pretends, gain acccss to the warehouse and sale- rooms of Messrs. Hendry and Hyde, auctioneers, Hull, and after a few days service, he Abscond- ed therefrom, taking away one gold watch, with a blue I • enamelled case, set with pearls in the border, the movement flat, jewelled, name ' Rust, Hull'; one gilt watch, name ' Bennet and Co., No. 90one gilt watch, outside case shell, name ' Sherr, Doncaster'; one gilt watch, name ' Rust, Hull'; one musical silver snuff- box; one silk shawl, and other articles.— He also obtained, by false pretences, a'new suit of clothes, comprising a dark olive coat, black waistcoat, grey mixture pantaloons, and a superfine dark f olive great coat.— The said CHARLES WEST HEALEY • is about twenty- five years old, about five feet seven inches high, rather stout made, has an aquiline nose, rather fair complexion," and of a modest address ; he wore a brown coat, a dark coloured waistcoat, drab pantaloons, and dark silk han'dkerchief. It is supposed he left Hull by the steam f boat to Barton, for London, on the 10th instant. AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANORS. A young man of dandy appearance was apprehended at Tottenham, on Monday evening, the 23d inst., on a charge of obtaining a gold, and a silver watch, of Thomas Newsome, a watchmaker in that place, under false pretences : had on a blue coat, light waistcoat, black silk stock, speckled jean trousers, and pumps. On his person the following articles were found:— a metal watch, ' No. 106,' maker's name ' George Graham, Fleet Street,' mocked jewelled, common verge, and single ease; two petitor seals, one with white cornelian, no impression, the other a red cornelian, with the impression of a head; a key, ring, and slide, of the same materiajs, suspended by a blue ribbon; a silver eye glass, with black ribbon; on<^ gold broach; one silver ring, set round with glass; one gold ring, set with pearls; one gold ditto, set with turquoise; one mock- chased hair- ring box and glass; one gold ring, set ^' ith topaz and paste; one gold ditto, set with turquoise and garnets, ( all these, except the " broach, were on his fingers ;) one broken ring, in his pocket, gold, set with amethysts; a pocket- book, with memoranda; and a silk handkerchief. A person, calling himself LIEUTENANT WILSON, , about twenty- six years of age, dressed in a blue coat, and a pair of striped trousers, of genteel address, about five feet five inches in height, lately obtained the following books, by false pretences, from J. Dewar, a bookseller, in Mile- End- road : — Pelham's World, a collection of Voyages and Travels, two volumes quarto, bound in calf; one purple morocco pocket- book ; one ditto roan ditto; GUK ditto calf ditto ; two morocco prayer- books ; and one . WILLIAM OWEN, who escaped from Carmarthen County Gaol, on the 5th instant, has been re- taken ; and JOHN WILLIAMS, who escaped at tlx! same time, is supposed to be on his way to Liverpool, with the intention of going to America. ' PROPERTY STOlEn. Stolen, on Monday, the 23d instant, in the Vauxhall- bridge- road, a brown silk umbrella, with brown cane handle and a leather string attached to it, the property of George Keeler, of Bedford- court, Covent garden, linen- draper. Stolen, on Tuesday night, the 24th instant, from the apart- ments of Catharine Sullivan, situate in Union- court, Orchard Street, four coloured gowns, one new shawl, one silk handkerchief, and one white petticoat. L.'; one pint silver pot, without a lid, marked ' S. L. A.'; and one silver table- spoon, marked ' S. L. A.' On Friday, the 20th instant, about one o'clock, some per- son cut the shop window of Henry Faires, No. 20, City- road, and stole a quantity of gold wedding- rings and other rings. Stolen, two sets of harness, with the initials ' I?. M.', from New- Inn- yard, Tottenham- court- road, tho property of Reuben Martin, of Berwick- street, Saint James, victualler. C. 7. and 6.'; a white shawl, with red border, a pair of stays, a beaver hat, a pair of black ear- drops, a small bundle of baby's linen, three shirts, three flannel waistcoats, one round hat brush, with hand strap, one seal, with the impression of a cock, a silver pen- cil- case ; a cotton sheet, marked ' E. H. P. No. 1.'; and two pillow- cases, marked ' E. H. P. No. 1.' Stolen, between the 19th and 21st instant, from No. 34, Henrietta- street, Covent- garden, a pair of boat shaped sil- ver salt- cellars, with handles, a pepper- castor, arid a pair of old fashioned silver spoons. Stolen, on Sunday, the 2? d instant, from the person of Mrs. Mary Howkins, on leaving Portland Chapel, a gold watch, maker's name ' Breqtiet, No. 6783/ and two seals, with the initials ' M. H.' and a lion engraved on them, and a gold key. Stolen, from a Gentleman's house in Great Poulney- strcet, a plain French gold watch, single case, three rows of gold chain, two plain gold seals, one white, and the other a red stone ; and an old- fashioned gold key.
