FRAUDULENT GAME CALLED THE THIMBLE RIG. John Price, the landlord of the Cross Keys public house in Wentworth Street, Whitechapel, was charged at the Bow Street Otlice, on Ihe 8 h instant, by John Francis Panchard, a foreigner, wilh having, in conjunction wilh several other persons not yet apprehended, defrauded him of a ,£ 10 note, at the late races on Ascott Heath, on tile 2d instant, and or- dered lo be detained for a week for further examination unless he produced good bail. This game which is at pre- sent much resorted to is thus described:— A gang of half a dozen or half a score as it suits, set up a table at which it is a part of their scheme to appear as utter strangers to and unconnected with each other. The apparently sole proprietor has 3 thimbles, and a number of pepper corns, one of which he puts under 1,2, or all the thimbles, and then offers bets as to which thimble a corn is or not under, managing so to make it appear to the bye- standers a certainty of their winning. They bet ; the pro- prietor loses and pays freely, and the laugh'of his confe- derates is against him. When they have thus drawn the attention ot a stranger, his cupidity induces him to bet; they allow him to win until he is in high humour, when the master of the table lifts a thimble under which is a corn, at the same time turning his head aside to speak to some one, he manages for the com to roll off so as lo appear he was unconscious of it ; he then puts the thimble down as if the corn was there safe as a master of course. He now con- tinues his offers of betting that there is a corn under that particular thimble. The bye- stander having seen the corn roll off while he turned his head, with equal avarice and dishonesty to the sharper, greedily takes the bet, and loses, another corn having been dexterously conveyed under the thimble. Gentlemen of properly have been known to descend to the meanness of this apparent certainty of winning which these sharpers offer as they proceed; and the complainant was led into his loss by a contrary desire. Often when the gang have won to certain amount, in order to secure it, they raise a dispute and confusion among themselves, for a pretext to disperse with their winnings. HORSES, & c. STOLEN.
