THE JURIES OF MIDDLESEX. 97 7 - N° 4.- The Right Honourable Robert [' eel, Sic. Sec. See. Master's Office on the Civil side, Court of King's Bench, 31st January 1824. THE Lord Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench having informed me, that my Return as to Persons nominated to serve on Special Juries had not been received, i take the liberty of returning to you, that I have no means of furnishing the information required, as it has never been the usage of my office to preserve copies or minutes of these proceedings. AN ACCOUNT, in Alphabetical Order, of the Names and Place of Residence of every Person nominated for any Special Jury Cause, in the County of Middlesex, on the CROWN SIDE of the Court of King's Bench; stating, the number of times each such Person has been nominated for any Special Jury Cause; the number ot times each such Person's name has been struck oft"; the number of times each such Person has served on any Special Jury Cause, in each of the last Three Years. THIS RETURN is made in as close conformity to the orders of the Honourable House of Commons, as the materials in the Crown Office will admit. Jt is, however, imperfect in many respects, for the following reasons:— In many instances, after the nomination of the Jury, there has been 110 reduction, after the reduction, no trial. There are 110 means at the Crown Office of ascertaining, which of the Jury have been summoned by the Sheriff, except by their appearing to have served upon the trial. Even when a trial has taken place, it has frequently occurred that the record of the trial or postea has not been returned to the Crown Office. It is observable that, upon prosecutions of a private nature, the parties, or their attornies, frequently examine the old lists, and fixing upon one, which appears to them to contain the names of persons whom they know to be iti the habit of attending upon the trial of Special Jury Causes, they, of their own accord, and by consent, adopt such as the nominated list, instead of having a nomination made indiscriminately from the Sheriff's book. This occasions the frequent recurrence of the same names upon the nomination. Such a mode of proceeding, however, never takes place without express consent, and in no one of the instances has it occurred on the prosecution of an offence of a political nature, as upon informations or indictments for sedition or blasphemy. The whole number of Special Jury Causes upon such occasions, included within the period of this Return, is thirteen. I have the honour to be, your very obedient servant, 7'// o. Le Blanc, Master 011 the Civil Side of the Court of King's Bench. E. H. Lushinglon, July 10th, 1S2 Crown Office, Temple. M7- I! b ( continued.)
